The guide Manuela is incredibly knowledgeable and spoke really clearly. Our original guide was unwell and Manuela was so hospitable and incorporated our group with hers. There’s something truly special about exploring Venice with someone who calls it home. A local guide brings the city to life, weaving tales of its history, culture, and mysteries as you navigate its canals and alleyways. They’ll introduce you to hidden courtyards, recommend the best gelato spots, and even share legends that aren’t in your typical guidebook.

The Best Venice Tours

The venetian lagoon

Getty Images

Known for its canals, waterways, bridges and other historic attractions , Venice, Italy, offers travelers everything from centuries-old history to unparalleled beauty. Some of the best Venice tours take you to the quietest areas of the city – away from the crowds – to discover Venice's cuisine, wine and culture, while others showcase the city from the water by gondola or kayak. Consulting both traveler opinion and expert input, U.S. News identified the tours below as the best Venice has to offer.

Avventure Bellissime – Venice in 1 Day Tour

Price: Adults from 119 euros (about $129); kids from 104 euros (about $113) Duration: 3 hours

If you're short on time, consider this three-hour tour that hits multiple of Venice's top attractions. You'll enjoy skip-the-line access to St. Mark's Basilica , as well as a two-hour walking tour (capped at 20 participants) passing sights like Doge's Palace , St. Mark's Square , the Bridge of Sighs , the Rialto Bridge and more. The final leg of your tour is reserved for exploring Venice's world-famous waterways on a one-hour boat ride down the Grand Canal . This is a great way to see much of Venice in just one day, according to tourgoers. Travelers also say it's a great value.

Complimentary headphones are included. Tours run Monday to Saturday around 2:30 p.m. Note: Your shoulders, stomachs and knees must be covered to enter St. Mark's Basilica; large bags are prohibited inside as well. Know, too, that St. Mark's Basilica only offers skip-the-line tickets from April to October.

Though each guide takes travelers along a slightly different route, you'll likely see some of the city's top attractions, learn about its centuries-old history and see much of its incredible architecture.

Tours depart daily at 11 a.m. from Campo Santi Apostoli in front of the well and travel to the eastern part of the Cannaregio district and the western part of the Castello district. The company asks you to consider donating what you think the tour is worth at its conclusion. Additionally, you must reserve a spot online in advance (there is a booking fee of 3 euros, or about $3, per participant). The company offers a couple of other sightseeing tours throughout Venice, as well.

Kids must be at least 6 years old to tour; the company does not recommend the tour for pregnant women, or for those who have mobility problems or are claustrophobic. Trips depart in the morning only and are limited to five people. Venice Kids Tours offers other family-focused activities, such as scavenger hunts, walking tours and boat tours.

Why a guide in Venice?

A Guide in Venice means a friend in Venice. A guide in Venice means opening yourself up to lear the secrets of this ancient city from locals who live and breathe the laguna. What does the local mean to us? It means we’re in the know. As residents who live and work in the city we carry with us its complex history and rich traditions…

A Guide in Venice means a friend in Venice

  • Stories from Venice
  • Is Venice 1600 years old? The history of Venice is somehow difficult to unravel, as in its written form this was drawn up late and in a fragmentary fashion. It is interesting to notice that the archeological excavation findings do not always chronologically correspond to the written reports. In fact, the remains prove that rich hubs were already settled on various areas of the lagoon.

Venice Best Guides

Sightseeing and enjoying  Venice  with our  walks  and  tours . Come and let Venice to be yours.

Planning a tour to Italy? Then you can’t miss Venice, a major destination for your tours . Today as yesterday Venice still draws visitors from every where, all of them wishing to experience its elusive dream-like ambience: it remains a city without wheels, built on rafts on wooden piles, located in the middle of a vast lagoon and still looking as it did centuries ago. Part eastern, part western, half land, half sea, Venice fits into no convenient category of place. It is bathed in mystery and wonder through the tales of countless visitors and travellers, each one adding some of his own, trying to seize the city’s indefinable nature. The millenary history of Venice then unfolds before you through an unparalleled variety of centuries-old palaces and their great array of architecture and world class fine art collections.

But how to visit and get the best of it? First you have to fit into the particular texture of the city: join in on your own or as part of a small group or party and walk around unhurriedly through the maze of waterways and alleys. Second, let a professional guide show you around the landmarks, tell you the stories of the past and bring you into the living scenes of the present. A gondola gliding on a canal, a grocery market in full swing, a bar where you’ll sip a glass of wine and taste local food, a workshop to see how expert artisans produce their traditional handcrafts and varied works. This is what you can experience with our Venice Tours; a city bustling with the joy of unexpected sights and sounds to be experienced at a walking, human and friendly pace.

Private Guided Tours of Venice

Venice, Italy is a very unique city – a beautiful maze of scenic bridges and winding alleyways.

The capital of the region of Veneto, Venice is called the “City of Bridges” because it has over 400 bridges connecting 118 small islands. Once an independent nation and one of the most powerful ports in the ancient world for the spice trade and silk trades, Venice was home for some of the most important military events in the Middle Ages, such as the Battle of Lepanto and the Crusades.

Venice is one of our favorite places in Italy, and for good reason. It offers something for everyone. Unlike any other city in the world, Venice is a city on the sea.

The savvy traveler knows there are two sides to Venice. One is the touristy Venice, where throngs of visitors flood the streets, cafes, and restaurants until they are overflowing. Then there is the real Venice – the one that offers a look into a city from a unique and local perspective. This is where you will find the sleepy alleyways with small restaurants set in a dark, romantic corner, calling you to a great meal overlooking the reflections in the waters of the canals of Venice. We know the real Venice and our private tours will showcase many hidden gems.

When planning your trip to Italy, you must include Venice – part of The Big 3: Venice, Florence and Rome. Make sure you stay within the popular areas of the city. Rialto, St. Marks Square, or the Accademia area are all great choices for your hotel.

When arriving to Venice, be sure to budget for a private transfer by boat. There are no cars in Venice, so you must take a boat to or from the airport or the car parking area to your hotel. Navigating more than 400 bridges (with luggage) to find your hotel can be daunting, and is reason to plan ahead.

A gondola ride is also a “must do” when visiting Venice, but buyer beware! If you don’t plan your gondola ride in advance you will be bartering with the gondolier for the cost, route, and amount of time. Booking your gondola ride ahead of your arrival guarantees you a route, a set amount of time and a fixed cost. Include a gondola ride in your travel package and save even more!

What to See In Venice

Venice has many interesting things you must see. The city is a maze of beautiful squares, ornate bridges, historic buildings and romantic canals. Make sure you spend time exploring the city away from the big squares and go to enjoy some of the out of the way neighborhoods, our private tours of Venice offer just that – a view of local life in Venice that few tourists get to see.

Basilica di San Marco - Private Venice Tours

Basilica di San Marco

The church formally known as  Basilica di San Marco , is affectionately referred to as the “Golden Church,” and it is one of the top tourist destinations in Italy. Done in the Byzantine style, this church was constructed in the 11th century for the patron saint of Venice, St. Mark. The inside of the Basilica is enormous and every inch is covered in lovely mosaics.

The altar is quite the historic monument in itself; the  Pala d’Oro  is covered in over 250 panels, with almost two thousand rare gems. They call the altar the “Golden Altarpiece,” because of the amount of jewels and gold used in its construction.

The Doges Palace - Small Group Tours Venice

The Doges Palace

In the same area as the Basilica, is the  Doges Palace  and  Bridge of Sighs .  Palazzo Ducale was the home of the Doges, which were dukes that when elected, ruled for their entire lifetimes. The Doges Palace is filled with rooms full of the finest art of Venice. To get the most out of your visit to Palazzo Ducale we recommend a Doges Palace tour, with a private guide tour so you can hear the history from a local.

The Bridge of Sighs connects the prison to the Doges Palace. The bridge got its name from the fact that prisoners sighed in pain going into prison, and sighed in relief when released.

Venice’s Galleria dell’ Accademia - small group tours of Venice

Venice’s Galleria dell’ Accademia

For tourists that enjoy art museums,  Venice’s Galleria dell’ Accademia is a must-visit Italian tourist destination. This museum is quite amazing, and is filled with Venetian treasures by Bellini, Titian and Longhi. The museum also has many exhibitions that change several times each year and visits to this and other museums can be built into your own Venice small group tours.

The Peggy Guggenheim Museum - escorted tours around Venice

The Peggy Guggenheim Museum

Another famous Venice, Italy museum is  The Peggy Guggenheim Museum . It is considered one of the best modern art collections in the world. Housed in a palace of the 18th century, American, Peggy Guggenheim focuses the collections of Picasso and abstract expressionist Pollock.

guided group tours in venice

The Islands

Besides the amazing amount of things to see and do inside Venice, outside there are the islands of  Burano  and  Murano . Burano is known for glass blowing, and Murano is known for lace making. Because of the distance and boat required to reach these locations, we recommend a Venice islands tour, because it includes transportation, guide in English and is a lovely boat ride.

We went on a guided driving tour of Italy, and it was amazing! If you are a car enthusiast, ask about that. The highlights were driving a Ferrari F430 on a racetrack and driving Stelvio Pass. The other Italian must see sights were included as well as introductions to locals and off the beaten path restaurants. If you are traveling to Europe, it should start here.

  • Vanda F 1 contribution 0 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing tour Fantastic guide and boat skipper, the glass and lace factory are amazing, need more time on each island for shopping. The guide Manuela is incredibly knowledgeable and spoke really clearly. Our original guide was unwell and Manuela was so hospitable and incorporated our group with hers. The tour company initially did not know our guide was unwell and we were waiting around until someone contacted the the tour company to inform them. After that everything was sorted.
