From San Fernando Valley, California, USA, HAIM are a trio of sisters who play well-crafted pop songs with a rock edge.

The three sisters, Este Haim (guitar/bass), Danielle Haim (vocals/guitar) and Alana Haim (guitar/keyboards)are joined by drummer Dash Hutton to form the band, with their R&B influenced pop rock receiving widespread acclaim following their early releases in 2012. The band meld influences from 90s R&B acts such as Destiny's Child with the soft rock of Fleetwood Mac alongside 80s synth pop to create their fresh, original sound.

Having come from a musical family, the Haim sisters had a long history of performing and playing together and had started the beginnings of their band in 2007 but did not consider taking it seriously due to pursuing other interests. Following their regrouping in 2012, they played with bands such as Edward and the Magnetic Zeros and Kesha, before releasing their debut EP "Forever" as a limited free download. Alongside the release and a string of successful shows at SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, US, HAIM garnered the attention of the record industry, signing with Polydor Records in the UK in June 2012. Following a UK tour and growing press coverage, HAIM topped BBC's annual poll for 'Sound of 2013,' which cemented their success for the following year, being the first all female act to win this accolade.

Their debut album, "Days Are Gone" (2013) was recorded amidst a busy touring schedule, through which HAIM became renowned for their incendiary live show, which displayed a much rockier side to their music than what was displayed on their studio recordings. The album was a huge success in the UK, reaching number one in the charts, whilst reaching number six in the US.

Whilst being an all-girl band, HAIM are quick to dismiss any tag or label of them as being a 'girl-band,' instead wishing to be respected as musicians regardless of their gender.

Live reviews

SoCal sisters Haim have had a stonking couple of years. After winning last year's BBC Sound Of poll, their meteoric rise was kicked off proper, even though they'd been garnering oodles of hype with early material, and gaining comparisons to Fleetwood Mac for months.

Now, in the aftermath of Days Are Gone (“nu-folk meets 90s R&B”, some say,) the trio stampede across the globe, displaying their ditties for all to see. Returning to Glastonbury for an almost-unprecedented second year running, the band rattled through a hit-packed set – including a cover of Beyoncé's “XO” – in the perilous moments before a tremendous thunderstorm struck and halted the entire festival.

Staples of all their shows – or at least the majority – include rousing renditions of radio-friendly pop-rock like “Falling,” “The Wire," “If I Could Change Your Mind," “Don't Save Me” and “Forever." As well, the three sisters (Alana, Danielle and Este) are fond of chatting with the crowd, often with blunt results. However, these days, possibly the biggest definite of a Haim show is Este Haim's infamous bassface. A blend of horror-movie gurns, lemon sucking contortions and the silenced yowls of no-anaesthetic amputations, it's a sight to behold that's become as famous as the band.

HAIM delivered everything I expected at this show, and more! This band has so many different things going for it, that it is hard not to see them having a long successful career. As a matter of fact, in the music business of old, when there were not 10 zillion bands out there, HAIM would be playing arenas and probably making Fleetwood Mac kind of money…The Wiltern isn't the best sounding venue for sure, but HAIM overcame this and totally kicked ass, playing the tunes off of "DAYS ARE GONE" with passion and skill. As good as they all are, (and special kudos also to drummer Dash and keyboardist Tommy) it is hard not to focus on Danielle Haim and her major rock star charisma. It doesn't hurt that she rips it up on guitar and is a pretty kick ass drummer too…All in all, HAIM was amazing, and I would go back tonight if I could get a ticket...

One word: Amazing. Seriously, I didn't think the Haim sisters could do anything that would make me love them more... And then I saw them perform. From magical moments such as bringing their parents on stage or to telling us personal stories in between songs, it was a concert like no other. Haim is such an incredible group and their shows speak volumes to the amounts of talent they had. Life changing night seeing an out of this world band.

All of the buzz following them is well deserved! The album is great; but live these songs truly come to life!! It's like a old friends getting together to party. The passion in Daneille Haim's guitar play will blow you away! Este always tells pretty entertaining story or two for starters. Alana is the mad genius rounding out the rhythm section. Este is the pulse of the band!!

My heart was full after this show. They sound just as awesome live as they do in my headphones. Awesome energy and I truly enjoyed singing and dancing to their songs. 10/10 would attend again.

Also, there was an engagement and they invited the couple to the stage and offered to play at their wedding. (jealous)

Absolutely incredible, paid resale price and still got my money's worth and then some. It wasn't too crowded, and the sound was really good. Their entry and exit from the stage is definitely a breath of fresh air. Will definitely attend future shows!

Fab night! Support acts were really good and then Haim were amazing!

They even did a song at the back of the crowd which was really intimate!

One of the best gigs I've been to!

An amazing gig by Haim as always! Great atmosphere and an amazing stage presence. Can’t wait to see them again soon.

Venue was a little hot but that isn’t the bands fault!

On September 19, the festival announced its 2023 dates and venues on social media. The touring festival begins its trek in Auckland’s Albert Park on January 30, before starting its Australian run at the Brisbane Showgrounds on February 4. The festival will then make stops in Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne before finishing its run in Perth’s Wellington Square on February 12.

The festival’s 2023 edition will be its first following the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions in Australia. In early 2021, organisers announced in a statement that they would put the event on hold , citing difficulties arising from the pandemic. Though they hinted at “something special in 2021”, no major events materialised.

Similarly, early this year, the festival confirmed that Laneway would not proceed in 2022 , though organisers said they had started planning a 2023 edition, additionally expressing that “there’s an optimism and confidence that things are returning to normal quite soon”.

The last St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival took place in 2020 with a star-studded line-up which included pop heavyweights Charli XCX and The 1975 ( who pulled out of the Brisbane date due to frontman Matty Healy’s health issues) as headliners. Major international artists on the 2020 lineup included Earl Sweatshirt , J.I.D. and Omar Apollo , adding to a plethora of Australian talent including King Gizzard And The Wizard Lizard , Tones and I , The Chats and Mallrat .

Here are three names to get you started: HAIM, Joji and Phoebe Bridgers.

Laneway has been teasing its 2023 return since earlier this year , and locked in dates and venues mere days ago — but now exactly who you'll be dancing to in Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth has been announced.

Also on the bill: Finneas, Fontaines DC, Fred again..., Girl in Red, slowthai and Turnstile, as well as 100 Gecs, Chaos in the CBD, Knucks and Mallrat. Yes, the lineup goes on from there.

In Australia, the festival will kick off at Brisbane Showgrounds on Saturday, February 4, then head to Sydney Showground on Sunday, February 5 — one of Laneway's new 2023 venues. From there, it's off to Adelaide CBD's Bonython Park on Friday, February 10; Melbourne's The Park in Flemington on Saturday, February 11; and Perth's Wellington Square on Sunday, February 12.

Clearly, there's a whole heap of reasons to be excited — from HAIM's first Australian tour since 2017 (and definitely the first since Alana killed it on the big screen in Licorice Pizza ) to Bridgers' return after a huge few years, just to name a couple. Also on the list: just Laneway being back and livening up late summer in general.

Live Review: HAIM – Enmore Theatre, Sydney (20.07.17)

' src=

  • July 21, 2017
  • Live Reviews
  • Enmore Theatre
  • Splendour in the Grass

As the usual circus that is Splendour In The Grass rolls through this vast country of ours, so too does some of the best bands currently walking the earth. One of these said bands is HAIM , and I’ll tell you what, they know how to play a live show. Here at their only headline date for this tour, the Haim sisters graced the Enmore Theatre with tight pop classics, and some well worked new tracks.

After literally only catching the closing notes of opener Cam Avery (after a calamitous situation at the box office that really isn’t worth going into), I was left disappointed knowing I’d missed a guy who’s currently crushing it. Having enjoyed select cuts from his recent album Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams I can only hope he tours it once more on this album cycle.

As headliners HAIM entered the stage just prior to 930, I was thrown back to the first time I’d seen them live. It was Splendour 2013, I’d peaked a little too early in the day, and was crashing severely in the hour leading into their set. This one set was the saving grace for my weekend, and they proceeded to continued this fine form once more on their Splendour return.

Opening with “Want You Back”, they quickly moved into “If I Could You Change Your Mind”. Straight off the bat, you could tell they were more willing to play a little more loosely and adventurous on older tracks, as the appearance of a Danielle Haim solo got the Enmore’s juices flowing.

Early favourite and the first real party track of the night “Don’t Save Me” got the froth dogs down the front moving, as I was reminded why I loved these girls in the first place. Taking the time to explain to the crowd that she sees everything in the crowd (and online), Este kept the crowd hungry before moving into new single “Little Of Your Love”.

Telling the crowd to get angry, as this one’s about “a motherfucking motherfucker”, a quick apology to their parents followed as the band moved into sentimental favourite “My Song 5”. One of the stand out tracks from their sophomore album Something To Tell You , “Found It In Silence”, proceeded the anger of “My Song 5”, before Este announced that it was time to party.

Happily obliging to her request, the Sydney crowd got well into it, as the energy on stage transcended any physical barriers that were in place, as “Forever” and “The Wire” both made appearances. While it’s pretty obvious that Danielle is the lead vocalist of the group, it was great seeing both Alana and Este take their own verse on “The Wire”.

You get the feeling that Este is the loose unit of the family, as she went on a singing rant about the Disney movie Hocus Pocus before begging the crowd to once more get their dance on as they moved into an extended version of “Falling”. Convincing the band to stop mid set so that they could all have a little hoedown on stage, it was here you definitely realised that they’re all blood relatives. With near identical dance moves, I now know what it must be like watching me cut shapes on the d-floor. ‘Outstanding’ is a word that springs to mind.

Re-entering for a one-track encore in “Right Now”, it was great to see that the band has kept the percussion interlude in their set that they had back in 2013. While it wasn’t the track I’d have closed on, what they did on stage in those closing minutes of “Right Now” was bloody fantastic.

Promising to return as soon as possible, I have a feeling they’ll keep to their word. Haim is a force on stage. The Sydney crowd now know it, those that have seen them before know it, and I’m sure the Splendour crowd this weekend will too.

Laneway festival review – Haim, Phoebe Bridgers and Fred Again try out new Sydney venue, with mixed results

Haim playing Laneway festival in Brisbane.

It’s been well over a decade since Laneway festival resembled the Melbourne street party it began as back in 2005. Now a six-stop tour across Australia and New Zealand, its Sydney iteration has most recently (and consistently) been held at the beautiful but bottleneck-inducing sandstone buildings at Rozelle’s Callan Park. But this year’s move to Sydney Showgrounds in Homebush was its most jarring yet: about as far as you could get conceptually from an inner-city laneway.

Recent festivals have dealt with bigger problems, of course: from the industry decimation wrought by the pandemic , to a spate of cancellations thanks to extreme weather – a fate that befell this year’s Auckland edition of Laneway. But a question loomed above the crowd: could the barren, grey Olympics wasteland, now home of the Royal Easter Show, retain a vibe?

Could Sydney Olympic Park retain a vibe?

First impressions weren’t great: police and sniffer dogs lined the walls as the mid-afternoon crowd funnelled in, hidden until you’d already entered, pulling people aside for strip-searches. Their presence inside, thankfully, was less overbearing.

The Showgrounds might not be as cinematic as Callan Park, but it is more functional: jumping between the four stages was fast and easy, and everything, for the most part, just worked. The three stages inside dark exhibition halls weren’t exactly picturesque, but the convenience (and shade) made up for what was lost in charm. It might be the most laneway-free Laneway yet (and nary a vintage pop-up or jewellery boutique in sight!), but the lineup itself – which hits Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth this weekend – is a trademark eclectic mix of genres, including festival favourites (Haim, Fontaines DC, Julia Jacklin) and new, trendy acts (TikTok sensations Joji and Girl in Red).

The Gen Z-dominating crowd had plenty of main character energy, with every second person dressed like Portia from The White Lotus, in knitted bucket hats, three-quarter cargos, or sweater-as-shirt. Early afternoon sets were surprisingly raucous and silly: Sycco led a 3pm crowd at one of the main stages through a chant of “Slay! Slay! Slay!” for no reason, before jumping on to 2021 hit Time’s Up; New Zealand four-piece The Beths got the crowd bouncing during a time usually reserved for polite head nods; Melbourne DJ JamesJamesJames packed out the outdoor stage – which doubles as the Easter Show’s wood chopping arena – with a hyperpop mix heavy on Charli XCX, and a constantly rising BPM. It was relentless in the heat but the crowd stayed till the end, before fleeing en masse for shade.

JamesJamesJames

Fellow Melbourne producer Harvey Sutherland was joined by a live drummer to run through last year’s long-awaited debut album of self-described “neurotic funk”, Boy. It was a much gentler set, with the crowd building steadily – a nice way to enter an evening of Triple J indie-pop favourites: Australians Mallrat and Julia Jacklin, as well as Finneas (Billie Eilish’s brother and co-producer) and Norway’s Girl in Red.

Julia Jacklin playing Laneway festival.

Mallrat’s Teeth, from her 2022 debut Butterfly Blue, is excellent in a festival context: an ethereal, reverb-heavy track that lets Grace Shaw and the crowd thrash around. The set clashed with Julia Jacklin, who was thankfully just a few minutes’ walk away; much of the two crowds swapped over at some point. Joined by her band, the Blue Mountains-born, Melbourne-based singer threw herself into one of the day’s most wrenching sets, before ending with her most up-tempo track Pressure To Party: there’s nothing quite like screaming along a promise to love again soon.

It was at night that the set times got confusing, largely due to the scheduling of Fred Again. The British producer’s trio of Actual Life mixtapes, released from 2021 onwards, have catapulted him from a behind-the-scenes unknown to one of dance music’s biggest names, known for mixing house and IDM with vocal samples taken from friends. Between landing four tracks on this year’s Triple J Hottest 100, a viral Boiler Room set, and last week’s 3.4-second sell-out “secret” show in Melbourne, it was clear he was going to land the biggest and most enthusiastic crowd. He could have used a later time than 8pm; it was a hard act to follow, even for (and perhaps especially because) it was followed by Phoebe Bridgers.

The beloved singer-songwriter was one of Laneway’s biggest gets: her second album Punisher arrived in 2020 just as people needed to express the vague melancholy that had crept across the world, inspiring a feverous attachment to her songs that most artists long for. But after Fred Again, the tonal and tempo shift was too severe: so many people split off to see hyperpop-ska-punk duo 100 Gecs that the gates to that arena were closed, leaving those wanting to dance stranded.

But the diehards who stayed for Bridgers sang back loudly at her, swaying and, in more than a few cases, crying along.

Phoebe Bridgers

Irish post-punk band Fontaines DC and producer Ross From Friends headlined the remaining stages, again whipping the crowd into an energetic state that couldn’t be matched by Joji, who followed Bridgers on the main stage: an admittedly lively performer but of lo-fi R&B, which seemed to deflate the crowd.

It was up to a blast of Cher and Britney to revitalise us before headliners Haim, at 11pm. The trio of sisters danced in sync, and told charming stories between huge sing-a-longs pulled from their three 70s-inspired pop albums; they asked the room where they could party after the show, with Este Haim suggesting the Rocks (to boos), then small queer Redfern bar the Bearded Tit (mass cheers).

But the Tit, an hour’s train ride from Homebush, is definitely closed at 1am on Monday – and despite their enthusiasm, the crowd emptied out after the first few Haim songs, eager to get a head start on the trip home. Sydney Showgrounds proved it can offer Laneway the right vibe – but perhaps more thoughtful scheduling could have kept them dancing until the end.

For Fans Of: HAIM | Introducing: Sydney Pop Artist Florian

By August Billy

How do you discover new music? Here at Music Feeds, we’ve been trying to dream up a meaningful way to bring you some of the incredibly talented artists whose music fills our inboxes every day.

Enter For Fans Of : a snack-sized series introducing you to the freshest new music popping up across the digital sphere.  Check out today’s feature artist below.

Feature artist: Florian

For Fans Of : HAIM, MS MR, Isabella Manfredi

Hometown : Sydney

Genre : Pop, indie-pop, soft rock

The 411 : Florian is a half-Fijian Australian pop musician based in Sydney, who first made waves with the single ‘Ultramachine’ in 2019. Triple j’s Declan Byrne heaped praise on the track, saying it put a “massive smile on [his] face.”

Already in 2021, Florian has released the singles ‘Patrick Swayze’ and ‘Yours & Mine’, both of which won favour with various triple j presenters. Good Nights host Bridget Hustwaite praised ‘Yours & Mine’ for its “big Tina Arena ’90s pop energy”.

Hustwaite’s review highlights Florian’s penchant for the classic sounds of pop music’s past. She names everyone from Fleetwood Mac, Madonna and Bon Jovi as influences, as well as Prince, Earth Wind & Fire and Daddy Cool.

Review: Florian’s latest single, the shiny, soft rock-adjacent, ‘Seventeen’, draws on influences as classic and varied as Fleetwood Mac and Prince. Although Florian looks back for inspiration, the song fights against nostalgia. The lyrics are an ode to the singer’s younger self, but infused with the sort of self-aware observations that come with growing up.

Haim Is Ready for Prime Time in an Exultant Hollywood Bowl Homecoming Show: Concert Review

haim concert review live

Haim ‘s homecoming show Sunday at the Hollywood Bowl felt a little bit like a block party first, and a big rock ‘n’ roll coronation secondarily. “We are Valley girls through and through!” declared Alana Haim, one of the three sisters who make up the core group, explaining why “there’s gonna be a lot of emotion tonight.” When they’d headlined the Greek Theatre across the hills in 2017, that might’ve seemed like the prime hail-the-conquering-heroes moment of their lives, but, of course, there were bigger nearby ravines to conquer.

Haim is nothing if not a group that fosters a “one of us” quality of egalitarianism between the impudent, casually funny performers and their audience. Which is why there can be a danger of selling their chops a little bit short, if you think of them too much as still Those Canter’s Girls. After all, nobody wants to be the equivalent of the guitar-store guy in the lyrics of the song “Man From the Magazine” who hands Danielle a starter guitar and says, “Hey girl, why don’t you play a few bars?” (Her response to that at the Bowl was a little more profane than it was in the slightly more chaste recorded version.) They played a few bars, all right, as talented multi-instrumentalists, with Danielle being the most mobile member of the three, moving back and forth with regularity between lead guitar duties and a position at the drums, where she gave off some serious early-Karen-Carpenter vibes, doubling as primary lead singer. Alana and Este were a little more anchored to their guitar and bass spots, but everyone got a chance to prove they’d also been working out on kettle drums or the like. If they ever started their own Guitar Center for Women chain to inspire “women in music” more than they already have, they might just save the world.

As good as the hour-and-40-minute concert got, it never got any better than its sixth number, “Want You Back,” which obviously invokes the Jackson 5 with its title but really feels in spirit more like a great, lost Hall and Oates song. It’s got a little off-kilter soul to it that’s hard to define, but what is definable is the rush of emotions that are felt in the writing — the sense that screwups have happened, mistakes were made, and pride must be swallowed to reclaim a love that was taken for granted. No one these days is really doing a better job than Haim of writing about what it’s like to be 30-ish and navigating relationships that come apart and back together again, charting between love, lust, ambivalence and commitment. There’s an underlying seriousness there about how to get on with life that isn’t negated by how impudent and even silly they can allow themselves to be in the presentation of the stuff. “I Know Alone” couldn’t be more lyrically stark in getting across how it feels to deal with abject solitude… so of course that’s the one that earns the dance routine.

Very occasionally, amid all this slyness, they get a little more folky and wear their hearts right out on their sleeve, as in the highly personal sisterhood anthems “Leaning on You” and “Hallelujah,” which got a little campfire-hootenanny segment in the middle of the show. The heartfeltness inevitably continued with some of the commentary about what it was like to be playing the Bowl, with Este offering a long aside about how she and Danielle used to go past the Highland exit every day in their carpool on the way to their downtown arts high school and dream of just attending a show there. (She also revealed that a friend who worked there eventually taught her how to sneak in, which must have set off heart palpitations among the listening Bowl staff.) But tongue-in-cheekiness was never too far away, either — as in an extended sketch that Este did with a flirty, phone-calling dude she’d supposedly met at the Oakland show the night before that finally ended up setting up their great, straight-R&B booty-call anthem “3 a.m.” (i.e., the time it would take to drive from the Bay area to L.A. to hook up). Este proved in that skit she’s got her own pretty solid comedic acting chops — filmmakers, make a mental note.

Having established that the set never got any better than “Want You Back,” it did get as good, at least. Sitting down again at the drums, Danielle started in with a shuffle beat that the faithful audience immediately recognized as the loose, lazy, sexy opening of “Gasoline,” of which she said, “We’ve gotten to my favorite song on the album (“Women in Music Pt. 3,” that is). What can we say? Danielle Haim has pretty good taste in Haim songs. And in a just world, that would have been the slow-burning banger of 2020. For many of us, it was, regardless.

It felt like a just world, anyhow, for 100 minutes at the Bowl Sunday, as the evening turned into a celebration of both Haim and Los Angeles. Angelenos don’t even mind just how ambivalent the seemingly celebratory song “Los Angeles” is; it got huge cheers, even if the tune openly deals with how problematic L.A. is. (It’d be interesting to hear how it goes over in a few weeks when Haim plays Madison Square Garden and calls New York “clearly the greatest city in the world” before concluding, “but it was not my home.”) It was another one of those shows — and belated album-release parties — that was worth waiting through a pandemic for, just to experience the irony of 17,000 people coming together as one for “I Know Alone.”

And to finally properly invoke “Licorice Pizza,” L.A. as a city, too, knows what it’s like to have a kind of musical crush on the Haims. That come to fruition in an explosion of mutual affection that was more cathartic than anything P.T. Anderson could come up with for a last act. For one adventurous, cocky, sentimental night, at least, we were all Cooper Hoffman.
