Should I take a Kauai Helicopter or Airplane Flightseeing Tour?

You’ve decided to take an air tour on your Kauai vacation. So, how do you choose between seeing the island in a helicopter or in an airplane? Honestly, you can’t go wrong, because any tour of Kauai from the air is going to be amazing — but you’re probably wondering: ‘what are the differences between a helicopter tour and an airplane tour?’ In this post we’ll help you understand some of the key differences you can use to choose the type of aircraft that’s right for you: helicopter tour vs airplane tour.

Helicopter Pros and Cons

Kauai Helicopter Tours

Advantages of a helicopter tour:

  • Airspeed: Rotorcraft can fly very slowly, and even hover in place — in between points-of-interest they can fly very quickly (around 150mph).
  • Proximity to the landscape: Helicopters can get close to Kauai’s waterfalls and cliffs and maneuver in narrow valleys.
  • Exhilaration: The sensation of flight in a helicopter is pretty dramatic. It’s hard to explain the feeling when the aircraft lifts off the tarmac and backs away from the loading zone — it’s not like any other airplane you might have been on.

The down-side to a helicopter tour:

  • Tours are expensive: Maintenance costs, fuel, and the base-cost of the aircraft (plus marketing, staff, etc.) make helicopter tours the most expensive visitor activity in Hawaii.
  • Fuel consumption: Helicopters will use almost 40 gallons of fuel per hour. This high rate of consumption isn’t great for the environment, and also contributes the high cost of operations.
  • Seating configuration: There’s a decent chance you’re going to be seated between other passengers. You’ll still be able to see ‘everything’ because helicopters have large panoramic windows, but if you’re hoping to get some great photos this seating arrangement isn’t optimal. Some companies offer to guarantee a window seat for an additional fee.
  • Tour duration: Because of the high cost, helicopter tours are often 10-15 minutes shorter than an airplane tour.
  • Passenger weight limits: Weight distribution is an important factor on any aircraft, and especially on helicopters, and for that reason, most tour companies have a 250lb limit.
  • Infant passengers: For safety reasons, infants cannot ride on a parent’s lap and must pay for a dedicated seat.
  • Motion sickness: A hovering helicopter will often pitch and yaw in Kauai’s tradewinds and that sensation can be unsettling for some passengers. Motion sickness medication (taken well before your flight time) can be effective.

Airplane Pros and Cons

Kauai Helicopter Tours

Advantages of an airplane tour:

  • Unbeatable prices: The lower cost of operations allows airplane tours to be priced much lower than a helicopter tour. Less money, plus a longer tour, adds up to a great value.
  • Less fuel = better for the environment: A GA-8 Airvan uses only 16 gallons of fuel per hour which is less than half that of a helicopter.
  • Everyone gets a window seat: Almost without exception, the planes used in Kauai air tours have one row of seats on each side of the plane — so every passenger has a window seat.
  • A longer tour: Airplanes often offer 65 to 70-minute tours, where a typical helicopter tour is 45-50 minutes.
  • No passenger weight limits: Because airplanes have a higher lift to power ratio, they can easily accommodate passengers weighing up to 300 lbs. — with no extra fees.
  • Infants fly for free: Like on a traditional airline, the FAA allows ‘lap-infants’ on airplane tours. A big savings if you’re traveling with an infant.
  • A more stable platform: While anyone can be susceptible to air sickness on any aircraft, an airplanes’ consistent speed and forward motion are well-tolerated by most passengers.

The down-side to an airplane tour:

  • Flight characteristics: Airplanes obviously cannot hover or fly backwards like a helicopter. Airplane tours make up for this by flying slowly, and circling points-of-interest — giving all passengers a chance to view and photograph all that Kauai has to offer.
  • Proximity to landmarks: You won’t get to hover right next to a waterfall or negotiate a narrow valley in an airplane. This is a fairly small thing, especially as it relates to photography, since Kauai is an island of ‘grand vistas’ and you have to ‘back up a bit’ to fit the whole scene into your frame. An airplane positions you perfectly to see the entire island below you.

Choosing a Helicopter Tour vs Airplane Tour on Kauai Island

If you plan on visiting Hawaii anytime soon, Kauai should be at the top of your list. It is truly a magical place that feels like something out of this world. The Garden Island can check off boxes for every nature lover. There are dozens of waterfalls, hiking trails, a canyon, and so much more.

Only a visit to Kauai is enough to do it justice. And there are essentially three modes of exploring this hidden paradise: foot, sea, and air. Your trip will be impacted by how you choose to get around, so do your research and choose wisely.

If you’re reading this, we can guess you’re thinking about an aerial tour of Kauai. So, let’s dive right in and explain the difference between helicopter and airplane tours.

Why Choose an Aerial Tour of Kauai?

So, why should you even consider touring Kauai by air? Well, there are a couple of reasons. First, over half of the island is inaccessible by foot, and a boat can only take you around the island or through the canals. So, your exploration is limited by mode of travel.

When taking an air tour of Kauai, those limits are tossed to the wind. You will be able to see down into valleys, forests, waterfalls, and cliffs that you cannot see otherwise.

Secondly, taking a helicopter or airplane tour means skipping traffic. You won’t have to battle other tourists or locals to see the majestic beauty you came to Kauai to experience.

Helicopter Tour

Ah, what can be said of a helicopter. Taking a helicopter tour is the most popular and exciting option of them all. The entire experience feels cinematic- like you’re playing out a scene in a movie.

There is something serene and thrilling about flying hundreds of feet in the air, taking in the landscape while shifting up, down, and sideways in altitude. You feel weightless.

With a helicopter, you can get super close to the waterfalls and cliffs. It can go places an airplane cannot because of its mechanical design and ability to hover in place. Helicopter tours also have "doors off" options which make for an even more amazing experience.

Airplane Tour

Sometimes referred to as a fixed wing, small airplane tours are another excellent option for viewing Kauai by air. One reason why many people opt for small plane tours is the cost. This type of aerial tour is considerably cheaper than helicopters. However, you do lose the "wow" factor and adrenaline that comes with the experience.

With that said, visibility of the surrounding environment is still excellent. And airplanes are usually more suitable for children as well. You cannot choose a “doors off” option, but most planes have efficient viewing windows.

Final Verdict

Ultimately, getting up in the air is what matters most. The great Kauai helicopter vs airplane tour verdict is really up to your personal preference and what you want to spend. Both are safe to enjoy, and they both provide impeccable views. If price is a concern, opt for an airplane tour. But if you want to make the most of your adventure, a helicopter tour is the way to go.

Are You Ready

To have a blast.

  • Flying over Kauai: why choose a plane over a helicopter?

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

Did you know that it was possible to fly over Kauai in a small plane? Before digging into the matter, we thought that the helicopter was the only way to fly over Kauai. Indeed, the helicopter companies have big means and make a monstrous advertising as soon as you leave the airport in the small booklets full of ads available on all counters, as well as on the big billboards above the carpets where you will wait for your luggage.

Effective. So effective that everyone swears by helicopter companies without knowing that traditional small aircraft companies also offer these activities (we were one of them).

So when we decided to discover Kauai from the sky, we took the time to do a lot of research on the subject. To tell you the truth, we had never been keen to do this flight over Kauai that we call "tourist trap" before we did it (but that was before!). So we waited for our third visit to the island during the preparation of our guide, to finally test the activity and tell you about it.  And it is a plane company that we finally selected: Wings Over Kauai.

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

In order to understand the reasons for our choice, I propose to start by listing the advantages and disadvantages of the airplane and the helicopter, and then from there, explain why we think it is better to choose the airplane over the helicopter to discover Kauai from the sky. Finally, I will tell you more about our experience with Wings Over Kauai.

1 The pros and cons of the aircraft

2 the pros and cons of the helicopter, 3 why we chose the plane, 4 our feedback with wings over kauai, 5 book with wings over kauai.

Let's start by listing the advantages and disadvantages of the aircraft, knowing that the models used for flights in Kauai are small aircraft that can carry 2 to 6 passengers.

  • Reasonable fuel consumption
  • No central seats (all seats have direct access to a window)
  • Flat and sometimes openable windows (to avoid reflections on photos)
  • Good stability during flight (little chance of getting sick)
  • Comfort on board ( icebox), air conditioning...)
  • Possibility to take young children and babies on board
  • Personalized welcome (few rotations)
  • Attractive price
  • Impossibility to get as close as possible to certain places (cliffs, creeks and waterfalls).
  • No " wow " effect of the helicopter

Now let's talk about the helicopter, knowing that the models used at Kauai can carry 2 to 6 passengers (most of them having a configuration with 4 seats in the back).

  • Possibility to get as close as possible to certain places (cliffs, creeks, waterfalls)
  • Panoramic view from the cabin
  • Possibility of landing at Manawaiopuna Falls, the Jurassic Park Falls (only one helicopter company is allowed to land there, the site being on private property)
  • Possibility to have a helicopter without door on some models (to avoid reflections on photos)
  • Doing your first flight in a helicopter
  • Very high fuel consumption (negative ecological impact)
  • High probability of sitting between two people (on average 1 chance out of 2, unless you pay extra)
  • More likely to get sick (it shakes more than the plane)
  • Some parts of the island are off-limits to helicopters
  • Impossible to take a young child with you

Now here are the reasons that tipped the balance in favour of the airplane.

Environmental impact

We believe it is important that the ecological impact of our activities be taken into account in the choices we make. At a time when CO2 emissions are at the heart of our concerns, the best ecological choice here is clearly the airplane with a fuel consumption of about 60L/h or 15.8 gallons per hour (model Gippsland GA-8 Airvan), far ahead of the helicopter with 145L/h or 38.3 gallons per hour (model Airbus AS350).

Both models have the same transport capacity (7 seats), so we can deduce that the helicopter is 2.5 times more polluting than the airplane!

The assurance of having access to a window

I still had in head the bad memory of a helicopter flight over Manhattan in 2013 where I found myself in a central place in the back of the chopper. Unfortunately, I could only take pictures from a distance, with a zoom lens, stuck between two people. Considering the price paid, the disappointment was immense! We did not want to repeat this disappointment.

The advantage of the aircraft is that 4 of the 6 seats are located on the right side of the aircraft, in a row, the 2 others being on the left side of the aircraft. Moreover the window is wide and flat which allows you to take pictures without too many reflections (I let you judge by yourself on the pictures of this article).

But you'll tell me that it's possible to have two-seat helicopters or to pay a supplement to have a window. Yes, it is! But in these conditions the prices are soaring, unless you are ready to break the piggy bank to take advantage of it.

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

The possibility of bringing your baby

It was a real relief when we learned that Lena could be brought on board the plane! We knew that only one of us would be able to try the adventure by helicopter, as Lena could not yet be left alone waiting patiently for us. So the solution of the airplane delighted everyone!

And above all the price!

To finish driving the nail in, the price! As a comparison, an AirVan flight is $159/person, compared to $349 on average for a same duration helicopter tour, that is... half the price!

This is because helicopters are much more expensive to maintain and consume much more fuel than airplanes.

The other advantage is that you can easily afford a private flight! For the price of a seat in a 6-seater helicopter, you can afford a private flight for 2 in a Cessna Skyhawk 170, which also has windows that can be opened for photos! Price: 358$ for a 65 minutes flight for two people.

What about the downside?

The main disadvantage of the plane is its inability to get close to the ridges and waterfalls, so we asked ourselves the following question: "Isn't it a handicap not to fly as close as possible to the ridges of the Nā Pali Coast or not to be able to go deep into the heart of the island in the circus of waterfalls?"

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

Well, eventually, after you make the flight, the answer's no. Simply because flying close to these natural wonders is indeed very impressive, but it doesn't make sense because you have to step back to measure their size, even if the "wow" effect can be visually impressive.

So we were able to take pictures all along the flight without needing a wide angle and with the necessary distance that the plane offered us. Finally, as the helicopter is closer to the relief, its path is longer, which forces it to fly faster (we saw several times helicopters passing us to have time to sink in the middle of a ridge, when we already thought that the flight was going fast!).

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

To make our flight, we then selected Wings Over Kauai (link to book at the end of the article) following their excellent reviews on the internet: they are 1st on Tripadvisor  all activities combined in Lihue! The feedbacks being ultra positive, we quickly contacted them and they immediately accepted that we came to test their flight over Kauai, all 3 of them with Lena!

Arrival and pick-up at the airfield

We have an appointment at 10:30 a.m. the next day at Lihue airfield where we were warmly welcomed. We are first weighed with our personal belongings (weight distribution in the plane) and then we are given a short briefing on the usual safety information. Finally, we are explained with the help of a relief map, the route that we are going to take by plane (I welcome this approach which allows us to realize the places that we are going to fly over in advance).

We are then given our life jackets (the always so reassuring thing in a plane ^^) and go to the tarmac where our pilot is waiting for us.

The time to take a break for a small souvenir photo (the concept is great and the two photos taken are sent for free by email at the end of the flight), here we are to take a seat in the small plane. We will finally be only the 3 of us to embark with the pilot, the 2 other people who had to join us having had a last minute impediment not allowing them to come with us (we met them at the airfield).

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

Flo is sitting next to the pilot at the front of the plane, as for me, I sit two seats behind him, to have the best view to take the pictures. I take Lena on my knees and fasten my seatbelt. We are then brought a cooler filled with bottles of water and sodas with wet towels. They also put a small pocket fan in the pocket at the front of our chair. In the end, with the air conditioning we will not have been hot during the flight, but I imagine that it is sometimes necessary.

We put on our headsets and test them with the pilot who takes the opportunity to introduce himself, then it's time to take off.

Flying over Kauai

The takeoff is very smooth, then the dream begins! The beautiful background music played in our headsets immediatly plunges us into another universe. The first views of the sky enchant us and our pilot regularly gives us anecdotes about the places overflown. We can ask him questions, which we do not hesitate to do throughout the flight as soon as something intrigues us. He speaks to us slowly and clearly about what we really appreciate.

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

With each new type of landscape, our pilot, who also plays the role of DJ, changes music to fit perfectly to the places overflown, taking care to lower them neatly so that the sequence is perfect. The choice of music is just impeccable, all perfectly in harmony with the scenery, it's a great show!

The flight is very stable and we discover an incredible number of small waterfalls that the pilot indicates to us via our headsets. Unfortunately for us, the famous Manawaiopuna Falls, or Jurassic Falls is in the fog, but we will catch up later with the magnificent views of the Nā Pali coast and Mount Waialeale.

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

Our pilot doesn't hesitate to make loops so that we can make the most of it. The turns are perfectly executed so that we can see the beaches and reefs very well when the aircraft is tilted over the sea.

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

The ride goes on and we don't miss a bit of the show. We shoot these sublime landscapes with our cameras to try to capture beautiful memories. Despite the fact that the glass has some marks (small scratches), I manage to stick my lens well to take pictures without reflection. I was a bit afraid of the marks but in the end you can't see them or hardly see them on the pictures. I let you judge the result on the pictures of this article which were all taken during the flight.

Landing and assessment of our flight

After exactly 65 minutes of flight we return to the ground with a soft landing. We would like to thank our pilot who was at the top of his game!

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

At the exit of the camera, we are surprised to receive a CD with Hawaiian music, the all illustrated with the photo that was taken 1 hour earlier in front of the camera. A really charming little attention!

You will have understood how much we appreciated this performance! As much for the visual side during the flight as for the impeccable welcoming. We are really far from the tourist factory that we felt around the helicopter companies.  Here we have a sense of welcome and everything is made to ensure that we have a pleasant time from start to finish and all this for a really affordable price.

If you are interested in flying with Wings Over Kauai, you can choose between 2 options.

  • The standard "AirVan" flight for  6 passengers, the one we tested. It is the ideal solution with a very affordable price of 159$/person .
  • The private flight "Cessna" 2 or 3 passengers  (the maximum weight of all passengers must not exceed 226 kg). This small plane has windows that open (great for pictures)! It is the ideal solution for a private flight for a couple or 3 people , for example on a honeymoon, or with a child . The price is very attractive at $179/person for an intimate flight!
  • The private flight "Air Van" for up to 6 passengers. If you are a family of 4 or more , or if you are traveling in a group , this is the perfect solution! The flight is charged $676 for all passengers , so it's really interesting if you are 4 and you want to be alone in the plane and if you are more than 4 it's even more economical! On the other hand, you will have to make a reservation by calling (+1 808 635 0815) because the fare is not offered via the reservation form. To check availability, go to the booking form and find an AirVan flight where there are still 6 seats available.

Remember to book as soon as possible, especially if you choose the private "Cessna" flight as there are only a few slots and they are quickly booked! Also note that if the weather is bad, they will suggest you to postpone the flight. So try not to plan it on the last day of your stay, it would be a shame not to be able to postpone it.

To make a reservation, it is here: Wings Over Kauai booking form

Do not hesitate to book directly via the link above, this is the official booking form of Wings Over Kauai with whom we have set up a partnership following our very positive experience. The price is the same for you and this allows us to earn a small commission which helps us to live today :-)

How to choose a helicopter tour in Kaua‘i

Mar 25, 2022 • 5 min read

Seeing Kauaʻi from the air is a thrilling and singular experience that may just define your trip to the Garden Island.

While expensive, it’s the only way to see much of the island, the majority of which is privately owned. Helicopter tours are by far the most popular option: while planes can fly no lower than 1000–1500ft, helicopters are allowed to fly as low as 500ft and can hover, too. The tours are popular with honeymooners – and with everyone who loves the romance of nature.

Here’s our guide to the best plane tours and helicopter tours in Kauaʻi.

How much is a helicopter tour?

The most popular way to see Kauaʻi from the air is to take a helicopter ride. Most helicopter tour companies depart from the airport in Lihuʻe ; trips generally last 60 to 90 minutes, and start at around $229. Tip: make reservations online ahead of time to save a bit of money.

The rugged coast of Kauai as seen from a helicopter above

How to choose a helicopter tour

It’s worth doing some careful research before choosing an operator. You’ll have to decide what kind of aircraft and tour you want (some land in neat places), and whether you want the doors on or off (some passengers like the visibility, others don’t like the exposure to wind and possibly rain).

Doors-off helicopters are the way to go if you are an avid photographer (and don't suffer from vertigo). But expect conditions that are noisy and windy – and maybe just a little bit scary. Keep in mind that on a six-seater helicopter, two people may be stuck in the middle. While you can request a window seat, it’s the captain has discretion to move people around for weight balance.

You also get to choose from big-window, little-window and bubble helicopters (the last like the ones seen on M*A*S*H ). The big differences will always be visibility and noise. More-modern helicopters are quieter and generally have big windows. You always wear headphones so you can talk with fellow passengers with a lower din, but even a slight reduction in sound can make your trip more pleasant. Then again, some of the older, louder helicopters have a sweet, retro,  Magnum P.I. –esque vibe that makes for a thrilling ride.

Make sure to check your operator’s weather policy before booking. Rain delays do happen, and tour routes will vary depending on rain and winds. Cancellations or postponements by operators may happen on short notice. Consider booking early during your stay, so you can reschedule for later if need be.

To check any tour company’s comprehensive safety record, consult the National Transportation Safety Board accident database .

Safety and apparel recommendations

Ideally, strap everything down (hats, phones, cameras, etc.). It can get a little cold, so bring a jacket and long pants, plus decent shoes in case your tour includes a landing.

Always approach a helicopter from the front (never the back). The captain will generally indicate which side you should board. Put your head down, and hold onto your hat, just like they do in the movies – then relax and look outward as you listen to ongoing narration from the knowledgeable pilots. You can feel free to tip them afterward, but it’s not required.

An aerial shot of cliffs plunging to the lush Nualolo Valley in Kauaʻi

Where do helicopter tours go?

From Lihuʻe, expect to see the Nawiliwili Harbor and the Menehune Fishpond, Kipu Kai and the Tunnel of Trees, Manawaiopuna Falls in Hanapepe Valley, Olokele Canyon, Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali Coast , North Shore beaches like Keʻe and Hanalei , and Mt Waiʻaleʻale. While the rips up impossibly steep canyons are an adrenaline junkie’s dream, it’s really the close proximity to waterfalls – many of which can only be seen from the air – that makes these trips amazing.

The tours generally follow pretty standardized routes, but you can talk with your pilot to customize your tour experience, especially if it’s just you and your family or sweetheart taking the flight. This means getting closer to (or further away from) the ground, making more acrobatic banking turns or going with a more easy-breezy approach – however way you wish to fly.

For a really unique trip, consider a tour with Niʻihau Helicopters ($465 per person), which flies over much of Niʻihau island (avoiding the population center of Puʻuwai), then ends with snorkeling off one of the island’s beaches. Lunch, snacks and drinks are included (with a five-person minimum required).

Best helicopter operators in Kaua‘i

  • Island Helicopters offers a landing on top of Manawaiopuna Falls, more commonly known as Jurassic Falls.
  • Mauna Loa Helicopters is noteworthy for the chance to fly with no doors...freaky but fun.
  • Jack Harter Helicopters lets you take a flight with one of the pioneers of flight tourism on the island.
  • Blue Hawaiian Helicopters flies high-end choppers that are said to be less noisy.
  • Safari Helicopters offers an ecotour with a 40-minute stop at a wildlife refuge.

A woman laughs as she flies in a biplane over Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i

Fixed-wing scenic flights

When you can take a helicopter right to the cone of Mt Waiʻaleʻale and hover there to your heart’s content, there seems to be little point in choosing a fixed-wing aircraft to tour Kauaʻi. There is one exception, however: a tour in an open-cockpit biplane, which flies so slowly it may as well be hovering.

The combination of the romance of early aviation, the sensation of the wind and roaring engine, and the emerald tropical island sliding below – not to mention sitting so close to your cabin-mate you may as well be in an embrace – makes this many a honeymooner’s first choice.

In fact, if it were up to passengers, biplanes would probably be as popular as helicopters on Kauaʻi, but there’s currently only one company that offers these scenic flights: AirVentures Hawaii , based in Lihuʻe. The tour leaves from Lihuʻe Airport and takes you north past the Wailua River and Kilauea Lighthouse . From there, you travel up the lush Hanalei Valley, continuing over the ridge to see cascading waterfalls and 4000ft cliffs. The flight then continues north past Hanalei to the Na Pali Coast, soaring past waterfalls and canyon drops through Waimea Canyon, and back to the South Shore, where you might just spot your hotel. The company even lets you keep the cool throwback hat and goggles as a souvenir of your only-in-Kauaʻi adventure.

Both are optimal for private tours as every seat is a window seat, unlike with many other helicopter tours. The helicopter tours have age and weight restrictions for safety, but the airplane tours are open to all ages, plus children under 2 are free!

On the helicopter tours you can expect to see the Napali Coastline, Waimea Canyon, Wai’ale’ale Crater, Hanalei Valley, Alakai Swamp, Hanalei Bay, Kauai Coffee Plantation, Ke’e Beach, Lumahai Beach, Manawaiopuna Falls, and Olokele Canyon.

The airplane tours are a great option for parties of up to 5 or any parties with young children who still want to experience an air tour. You can choose to tour just Kauai, with many of the same sights as the helicopter tour, or Kauai and Niihau. Niihau is a privately owned island within the chain of Hawaiian islands and is essentially untouched by the modern outside world. It was purchased in 1864 and is invite only. There are fewer than 200 residents, no paved roads, commercial buildings, hospitals, or other modern amenities we are accustomed to. Ali’i Air tours says,

According to legend– Niihau’s modern-day owners are currently upholding a promise made to a Hawaiian king to protect the island from outsiders, preserving the history, natural beauty, and tradition of the area.

Editor Picks: The Best Kauai Helicopter and Plane Tours

The best way to appreciate the raw natural beauty of Kauai in its entirety is from the sky. Here are five top helicopter and plane tours that help you experience the Hawaiian island.

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

(Photo: Getyourguide.com)

With its volcanic origins and lush vegetation, owing to the tropical climate, it’s no surprise that many of the filming locations for Jurassic Park were located on Kauai. This is the stuff of prehistoric legend and you can experience it all from the air on one of the island’s many plane and helicopter rides. The range of tour options is dizzying so we have compiled a broad list of the best, taking into account important factors such as the value for money, duration, itinerary and regions of the island you’ll get to see from the sky.

Kauai Sightseeing Flight over Na Pali Coast

An excellent-value way to see Kauai from the sky is on this stunning hour-long plane ride. You will soar over the Na Pali coastline and witness parts of the island that are completely inaccessible by land transport. You’ll fly over red earth, plunging waterfalls, sheer, green cliffs and turquoise ocean along the way. Free shuttle transfers for cruise ship passengers are provided as part of the fee. This tour runs from Mon-Sat, and you can select from five daily departure times between 10am and 4:30pm. From $145 per person.

25-Minute Scenic Helicopter Tour

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

For more of a Jurassic Park vibe, a helicopter is the way to go and Maverick Helicopters Hawaii run excellent flights over western Kauai. You will fly over the dappled red and green earth of Waimea Canyon, the agrarian Hanapepe Valley, and past Manawaipuna Falls, the very waterfall made famous in the revered movie Jurassic Park. This 25-minute helicopter ride operates once a day at 11am, five days a week. Operation days may vary, but are usually Thu-Mon for much of the year. From $199 per person.

Kauai Shore Helicopter Excursion

This 50-minute helicopter adventure offers up magnificent views of some of Kauai’s visual gems, including Manawaiopuna Falls (aka Jurassic Park Falls), Bali Hai and the Waimae Canyon, which is also regarded as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. The flight sets off from Lihue, with transfers to the airfield included for those who have arrived in port by cruise ship. The precise route is dependent on the weather and it is worth bearing in mind that Kauai is home to one of the wettest places on the planet. There are various departure times available. From $320 per person.

Vintage Biplane Tour of Kauai

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

(Photo: Viator.com)

If a normal light aircraft or helicopter just doesn’t quite hit that high note for you, then how about hopping into a bright yellow, vintage biplane? The cockpit, located behind that of your pilot, fits up to two people. After takeoff you’ll soar over the beautiful Kauai countryside for an hour-long flight. What’s more, the pilot provides narration about the natural wonders of the island, adding context to the visual splendor. Flights depart Mon-Sat from Lihue Airport. Morning flights are priced slightly lower than those around midday or afternoon. From $560 per group.

Kauai Eco Adventure Helicopter Tour

Exploring and comprehending the magnificent natural beauty of Kauai is the main aim of this helicopter tour. From rainy Mt. Waialeale to Waiapuna Waterfalls you can experience the island from a unique perspective from the comfort of a business class seat. Watch the Na Pali Coast unfurl below you and, weather permitting, head into the crater of Mt. Waialeale to experience the 3000-foot waterfalls there. Please note that this helicopter tour doesn’t always operate on Sundays. Flights last approximately 50 minutes. From $335 per person.

Seems like you already have made your choice from reading your post.

WOK when I flew with them, flew in what we call slow fight, so you travel at a much lower speed than normal cruise . Guaranteed a window seat, and when we flew them, all of the passengers were seated on the right hand side so that you all saw the same thing as Bruce narrated....did not miss a thing.

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

Rotary wing is a more thrilling ride especially with the doors off. The helicopter also can slip into the Wai ele'ele' crater where nothing but rock walls, lichens, moss, waterfalls and mist surround you. Otherwise the views are the same. Many swear the helicopter tour was the thrill of their lives. For me, a rotary wing was an Army way to get from A to B, so for me not so much.

Bottom line is that you will see the same things. Whether the thrill of a helicopter ride is worth twice the price is up to you. Sounds like it isn't. Bruce Gamble, the WOK owner/pilot gives a fantastic tour.

If you can definitely take the tour. The views are fantastic.

Ditto Rockytop. Both are wonderful, have done both, WOK and their pilot are top notch, but the helicopter and getting practically right up to a waterfall is pretty darn thrilling. If you want to save $$$ then WOK is fabulous. Will you get airsick? Maybe!

There are many older threads on this one. Stick "wings over Kauai' into the search box and you'll see for yourself.

i uploaded a small (90 seconds) video portion, my wife filmed of the flight . (not exactly hi-def, but...)

That said though DS 17 gets to make the choice for our Kauai trip and wants to go with Wing over Kauai instead of helpicopter as he has done a little flying on his own in the very same model plane that they are doing and loves those planes. I'm perfectly happy with his choice given the excellent reivews and as it works better for the budget.

The helo does get up closer and can hover. Theyʻll go down into whatʻs called the crater, hover, and do a 360. And thereʻs nothing like swooping over the ridges and through the canyon.

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

Personally, if it were a one time thing, we would spend the few extra dollars for a helo tour. The other posters are right on. If you return another time to Kauai , and feel like another circle island tour, fly with Wings Over Kauai, or Air ventures.

Our thinking about going on vacations, we are going to experience what is important to us. No telling when or if we will be back. In the grand scheme of things, a few extra dollars spent on a particular activity, is really worth it. especially when that activity is something very special. Also, we do not want to be sitting around the kitchen at a later time, back on the mainland, saying " You know, we should have done such and such. "

Of course all of this is up to the individual. All we can do is to relate what we have done, and our own personal feelings and atitudes.

It is up to others to make their choices.

Thanks everyone for the words of wisdom. I like the idea of saving $$$ especially since I'm sure I will be bleeding cash when on vacation. None the less we have decided to go for the helicopter tour and spend the extra bucks, to hell with the inheritance for the kids :). PZP you got me with the swooping over the cliffs and going down in the crater. Dennyj I like your way of thinking don't want regrets when I get home and remembering my trip when I'm freezing my butt off on a cold and snowy day in Chicago.

We are thinking Blue Hawaiian Helicopters. Price is $216 for about a hours if you book 5 days out on the web looks like they do the pretty standard tour of all the sites. Anybody done Blue Hawaiian helicopter does price sound fair? Are the back seats ok to see from? Any tips on getting the front 2 seats?

We did Jack Harter helicopter tour two weeks ago. It was AMAZING! Paid $259 but it was worth every penny.

helicopter vs plane tour kauai

I've been impressed with the quality of Blue Hawaiian's Helo tours on the 4 major islands.

Pilots showed stunning aerial views & were very knowledgeable ~ shared interesting facts & the history of each island.

When you call to book, ask their advice regarding day & morning / afternoon, since they keep a pulse on weather conditions.

If possible, take your helo tour on the 1st or 2nd day to get a better orientation of the island.

On the Blue Hawaiian Kaua`i tour, the pilot dipped down close to the waterfall where he had flown the aerial photographers of Jurassic Park, & to the extinct Mount Waialeale volcano, which is the wettest place on earth and features 3,000' waterfalls. Priceless experience.

You can get the best views of the NaPali Coast from the Right side, although Pilots usually circle until all passengers have the photos they want.

Price is good. Seating is configured upon arrival by weight / balance. I figure it never hurts to chat-em-up & ask for a prime seat. They'll either say Yes or No.

Good Luck!!!

All the helo companies do basically the same route. They all go to Wai`ale`ale, into the crater and close to the waterfalls. Safari will let you pay for a front seat, which is well worth it. I also like Jack Harter.

2nd the Jack Harter doors off. What an experience swooping into an extinct volcano and flying over the Napali coast.

Mauna Loa Helicopters, no bad seats, they are two behind the pilot. Doors off for better pictures.

View Bali Hai, also known as the Makana Mountain, which starts at the beginning of the Na Pali Coast on the north shore of Kauai. Soar over Manawaiopuna Falls, one of the Garden Isle’s most famous waterfalls . Best known from the opening of the 1993 blockbuster film, Jurassic Park. Watch from above as the water rushes over a 380-foot tall cliff surrounded by walls of deep green lush flora. Located within Hanapēpē Valley on the west side of the island, it is a site few can say they have seen while on Kauai.

Continue on over to Hanalei Bay which covers nearly two miles of beach and is backed by 4000ft tall emerald mountains: Hihimanu is on the east, Namolokama is in the middle with its square top, and the triangular shaped Mamalahoa is to the west. Often cloaked with a mist of clouds the Mt. Waialeale ridge home to dozens of cascading waterfalls.

The name Waialeale, meaning “rippling water or overflowing” receives over 400 inches of rain per year and is known to be one of the wettest spots on earth. You’re surrounded by enchanting waterfalls and lush green walls of fauna. Waialeale Crater aka Blue Hole & The Weeping Wall. From above you will see it all and find yourself lost in the beauty and mystery of Kauai’s enchanting lure.

Other sites like the Wailua Falls and Waimea Canyon are also famous aerial sites on the Doors-Off Adventure Tour.

Short answer is “yes”. However, rest assured, prior to every flight our pilots and ground crew review the weather to make sure it is not only safe, but also conducive to a quality tour for you. We understand that this is a big expenditure, and we want to make sure you get your money’s worth. We will cancel your tour and make sure you get a full refund if there is poor visibility, or if the pilot determines the winds are unsafe.

We give a 100% refund for cancellations made 48 hours before the tour date. If there is inclement weather or unscheduled maintenance, we will either reschedule your tour or issue a 100% refund. Keep in mind that if the tour is booked with a third party, their cancellation and refund policy may differ from ours.

All guests must provide their own transportation. We recommend Taxi, Uber, or Lyft. We ask guests to allow an extra 15 minutes of travel time due to unforeseen traffic, to arrive early or on time for their check in.

The doors-off helicopter tour is extremely windy. We recommend comfortable athletic wear, no loose shirts, or dresses, or skirts. Closed-toe shoes or sandals with a heel strap. Hair should be secured in a bun or tightly braided, no loose ponytails or braids. Temperatures are 10-15 degrees cooler and we recommend a windbreaker or a jacket to protect against the wind chill.

All of the tour times we offer are great times to view the island. Time is personal preference whether you like to be an early bird and do activities first thing in the morning, or take your time and do a later tour midday or afternoon.

You may reschedule or cancel your tour for a full refund if done 48 hours prior to the tour date and time. It should be noted that it does rain almost every day in Hawaii. Most of the time it is in very small areas at a time, which does not affect our tours. So we do not recommend cancelling or rescheduling based on a forecast of rain.

Front Seat upgrades are the two seats in the front with the pilot. Selecting these seats guarantees the seating assignment if the two passengers’ body weights combined do not exceed the 345 pounds weight limit. The front seats are sold only as a pair together, whether it is for one or two people. The open seating is any seat in the helicopter. Open class seating is assigned by body weights. For solo passengers, we try our best to accommodate a seat next to the open door. For couples, we seat you two together in the same row. For a party of three, we either seat two passengers in the front and the third passenger in the rear seat, or vice versa depending on the weights. For a party of four passengers, we will seat accordingly by each body weight, typically the two body weights that are the lightest combined at, or under, 345 pounds will be seated in the front. For any seating, you may add a request upon booking. We do not guarantee seating nor assign seating until the day of the tour. Premium Plus seatings are for any guests that weigh 240lbs/109kg or more. An additional seat is blocked and reserved to ensure the combined passenger weight does not exceed the aircraft limitation of 745lbs/339kg.

Because this is a doors-off helicopter tour operation we must take extra steps — in accordance with FAA regulations — to make sure nothing flies out of the helicopter in flight. A phone flying out the door could hurt someone on the ground, or even damage the helicopter if it hits the spinning rotors. Requiring a tether for your phone allows you to enjoy the tour without having to worry about it slipping out of your hands and being lost forever. If you do not have a phone tether, one will be available for your use.

The minimum age requirement is 10 years old. A responsible adult must be seated next to any child. No lap children are allowed, and each person is required to wear a seat belt.

808-651-0619 or use our Contact Form

Weight Restrictions: Front Seats are sold as a pair only, with a maximum combined weight limit of 340lbs/154kg. Guests weighing more than 240lbs./109kg and parties of two (2) with a combined weight of more than 400lbs./182kg, must reserve (1) one additional seat at the regular price. Private Tour 4 guest maximum weight limit is 745lbs/338kg.

Age Restrictions: Minimum age 10 years.

Is a Helicopter Ride in Kauai Worth It? Your Top Questions Answered

A re you thinking about booking a  kauai  helicopter tour but still have a lot of questions keep scrolling to find out whether or not it’s worth booking a helicopter ride in kauai..

Guest post by Dani of Diapers in Paradise

If you have ever considered splurging on a helicopter tour, you are not going to find a better place in the world to do it than  Kauai .

Kauai is known for the lush, verdant jungle that covers most of the island, but it is largely inaccessible to vehicles.

In fact, some of the most iconic landmarks of the Garden Island are only visible from the water… or the air.

There are many helicopter tour companies set up on the island, ready to show you around the side of Kauai that you will not be able to experience any other way.

If you are wondering whether a Kauai helicopter tour is a worthwhile part of your trip, read on to learn more and to hear about my experience with it.

What is it like to take a helicopter tour of Kauai?

Do you remember that iconic moment in the original  Jurassic Park  movie  when they are approaching the island in a helicopter, and the dramatic theme music plays as they fly along the prehistoric-looking coast?

That’s exactly what it feels like during helicopter tours of Kauai.

Because that is exactly what you are doing!

That scene from Jurassic Park was actually filmed on the approach to the Na Pali coast, on Kauai’s North Shore, which is one of the two main reasons to take Kauai helicopter tours.

Na Pali is only viewable  by boat  or by Kauai helicopter rides, and if you want the most epic view of the landscape, a helicopter is the way to go.

The other reason to take a helicopter tour? Waimea Canyon. The “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”

It is possible to see parts of Waimea Canyon by a combination of driving and hiking, but you will only get a hint of the wonder of this ten-mile-long canyon.

But flying through the canyon, past countless waterfalls, and seeing the jungle sprawled out below you – that is how you truly come to appreciate the sheer size and grandeur of Waimea Canyon.

Taking a tour of Kauai by air is an experience that you will not forget.

What is the process for taking a Kauai helicopter tour?

First, you will want to book it ahead of time for your Kauai vacation.

Yes, there are plenty of tour operators that you can find around the cruise ship terminal in Lihue that are happy to take same-day bookings.

But you will really want to do your research ahead of time and choose a reputable operator.

We went with  Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours  for their vast experience and impeccable safety record and because they are one of the very best helicopter tours for private tours.

When you arrive, you’ll go through a safety briefing, and then you’ll head out to meet your pilot at the airfield.

They will get you all buckled up, go over any last-minute safety reminders, and then you’re off! The vertical take-off is thrilling and nerve-wracking, but within minutes you are out over the jungles of the island.

Most Mauna Loa helicopter tours are in the 45-60 minute range, although you can find longer ones.

While some of the sites that they visit may vary, you can bet that every tour is going to show you Waimea Canyon, the rugged Na Pali Coast, and  Manawaiopuna Falls .

There are even tours available that stop midway through for a picnic and photo op!

What are the types of Kauai helicopter tours available?

When you are looking to book a helicopter tour, you will have a few options. You’ll first need to choose if you want to share the helicopter with other people or book a private tour.

Shared tours usually have 6 passengers. And while this doesn’t seem like much, it is possible that you will have your view impaired by another passenger.

If you are hoping to get good photographs of this for your Kauai vacation, this is particularly worrisome.

Some of the best Kauai helicopter tours are better than others for visibility, so read about the particular helicopter for any flight you are considering booking.

You also might not get seated next to your travel partner. They balance the helicopter for weight, so you will not have any say in where you sit.

The next thing you’ll need to choose is whether or not you want doors on your helicopter.

Opting for a Kauai doors-off helicopter tour gives you the advantage of having a better view and not getting any glare on your photos. It’s windier and sometimes a bit wet!

But Kauai doors off helicopter tours give you an unparalleled view of the scenery and make you feel much closer to the landscape.

If having the doors off seems inherently scarier, remember – it is not the doors that are keeping you safe. It is your seat harness and the skills of your pilot.

It will be imperative that you do not have any loose items on you when you fly. Cameras will need to be strapped to your body.

We opted for the private, doors-off tour.

While this was a splurge for us, we figured it was probably the only time we would ever do a helicopter tour, and we wanted to do it the best way we could.

We have not regretted this decision once! The best Kauai helicopter tours are pricey either way. May as well make the most of it on this stunning Hawaiian island!

Can you bring kids on a Kauai helicopter tour?

Yes, although the age requirements will vary by the tour operator.

Some operators have a minimum age of around 7, while others will allow children of any age, including lap infants (under 2), for free. Lap infants will not have a seat belt, however.

If you are traveling with young children, you will really want to think about if they will be able to handle sitting buckled into an adult-sized harness for an hour, especially considering they might not even be able to see past other passengers.

You also might not get seated next to your child, depending on the weight distribution, although most operators will try to seat families together when possible.

When we visited, we were  traveling with a baby  and a toddler. We ended up using a  local babysitter agency  and turned it into a wonderfully memorable half-day date.

  Are Kauai helicopter tours safe?

This is undoubtedly a question that has crossed your mind if you are considering helicopter rides in Kauai.

And given a few high-profile helicopter crashes in the last few years – including one on Kauai – it is only natural to be nervous.

Of course, there is always risk in something like a helicopter flight. They are statistically more dangerous than a commercial airplane flight, although they are less dangerous than flying in a private plane.

Tour-operated helicopters are significantly safer than private helicopters, as well.

Helicopter flight has become much less risky over the past few decades, but there are occasional incidents.

Of the Hawaiian islands, Kauai has seen the highest number of helicopter crashes, although they are still incredibly rare.

Ensure that you choose a reputable tour operator that adheres to the highest level of safety standards. Expect that if there is adverse weather, your tour will be canceled.

For this reason, it is a good idea to book your helicopter flight early in your trip so that you can reschedule if needed!

We never felt unsafe during our helicopter tour. The flight was smooth, and we were impressed with our pilot’s level of experience.

Is a Kauai helicopter tour worth the money?

Without a doubt, yes!

The breathtaking scenery of the NaPali Coast and Waimea Canyon are best viewed from the air, especially a bird’s eye view!

There is no better way to experience the natural wonder of the Garden Isle than by flying above the jungle in a Kauai island helicopter.

It is a once-in-a-lifetime type of experience that you will treasure, along with incredible photos, especially if you choose a doors-off tour.

If you are coming to Kauai, I highly recommend taking a few hours out to see the beauty that this island has to offer!

An island sculpted by nature

Aerial tours of Kauai’s most astonishing natural wonders

Kauai is a natural masterpiece. For over six million years, the powers of nature have been sculpting and reshaping Kauai, creating some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Appropriately named the “Garden Isle,” the island of Kauai is draped in lush green valleys, towering sea cliffs, thick jungle vegetation, winding rivers and gorgeous cascading waterfalls.

Without a road encircling the island, many of Kauai’s most stunning sights are inaccessible by land. Among these remote scenic attractions is the famous Na Pali coast, spanning 17 miles along Kauai’s North Shore and boasting 3000 ft. sea cliffs and valleys. Then to the Southwest is the Waimea Canyon, coined the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” With so much to explore, a Kauai helicopter tour is truly the only way to experience all of Kauai’s most epic scenery.

  2. Helicopter Tour vs. Airplane Tour

Tour duration: Because of the high cost, helicopter tours are often 10-15 minutes shorter than an airplane tour. Infant passengers: For safety reasons, infants cannot ...

  3. Choosing a Helicopter Tour vs Airplane Tour on Kauai Island

Airplane Tour.

  4. Flying over Kauai: why choose a plane over a helicopter?

As a comparison, an AirVan flight is $159/person, compared to $349 on average for a same duration helicopter tour, that is... half the price! This is because helicopters are much more expensive to maintain and consume much more fuel than airplanes. The other advantage is that you can easily afford a private flight!
