Classic Walks of Scotland

The classic Walks of Scotland was my husband’s and my first experience with a group trip, We felt that everything went well, from the booking of the trip with Tourradar to the rest of the trip, hikes and bookings though Intrepid. The Intrepid group we hiked with was great and our guide, Kate, was very professional, attentive and fun. Thanks to Carmen and Phil from Guisachan Guest house for the comfortable and homey accommodations.

Overall, a very interesting trip, that enabled us to enjoy most of what the Orkneys had to offer. The evening meals were good and the local sandwich shop proved very useful for lunchtimes.

HIKING TOURS IN SCOTLAND

The scottish highlands remain a mysterious frontier even after thousands of years of human settlement. somehow the sweeping moors, deep forests, mountain valleys, and deep lochs remain as interminable and intriguing as they were when the scottish so heartily rebuked both the romans and the english..

Explore the best of Scotland with Ryder-Walker’s Guided Scotland: Highlands and Islands and the Self-Guided Rob Roy Way . Immerse yourself in the captivating Highlands and Islands trek, featuring our favorite hikes around the charming market town of Callander before traveling to the iconic Isle of Skye. Alternately, embark on the historic Rob Roy Way, tracing the life of the legendary robber-outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor.

You can imagine the old legends of knights and faeries coming to life as you hike through the ancient Scottish woods beneath the summits of the highest peaks in Scotland, the Munros (mountains over 3,000 ft). The Munros are featured in both the Highlands and Islands and the Rob Roy Way itineraries. Meanwhile, the Isle of Skye is a legendary location for good reason – the landscape here is truly austere with jagged peaks, remote villages, and medieval castles all adding to the brooding atmosphere of the landscape. Whether you are starting out your hiking day with a sturdy Scottish breakfast or arriving at a village just in time to catch a sheepdog exhibition, the eternal charm of the Scottish Highlands is sure to inspire you to explore the hidden mysteries of Scotland.

As a cultural excursion, our tours in Scotland are some of Ryder-Walker’s richest hikes, full of historic locations, local lore, and vibrant living culture. It’s hard not to fall in love with the Scottish sense of life. At night cheery traditional Scottish music fills the pubs with the sounds of fiddles, guitars, pipes, flutes, and drums. Scottish food is also an unsung hero, with the local pies, pub fare, and farm-to-table restaurants far exceeding the United Kingdom’s dim reputation for cuisine. You might even get a chance to try the infamous haggis, a pudding of spiced sheep’s pluck. Overall, you won’t find more warmth and cheer than in the chilly reaches of the Scottish Highlands and Isle of Skye.

Our Highlands and Islands tour focuses on what we think is the absolute best hiking across Scotland. The section that travels through the Scottish Highlands explores the Trossachs National Park – the same national park that the Rob Roy Way traverses. Here you will hike some of the highest peaks in Scotland and wander through the beech forests that inspired the nature poems of legendary Scottish poet Alexander Campbell. On the Isle of Skye, the trek takes a turn for the more dramatic, as the landscape of the far northern island reveals its true majesty. Notably, the Torridan mountains are a low-lying, and surprisingly dramatic chain of mountains known for their twisted rock formations. Other features of note in Skye are the island’s massive vistas, roaming sheep flocks, and windswept coastline.

The Rob Roy Way follows the life of a real-life Robin Hood; a tale of clan politics and resisting the changing world from the insular world of the remote highlands. Rob Roy MacGregor himself gained notoriety as a cattle thief and would end his life as a hero to all of Scotland. Along the Rob Roy Way, we visit locations where Rob Roy did battle with Spanish pirates, hid, and escaped from the law. We visit the historic home of the MacGregor clan, and the site of his eventual burial. Along the route, the Rob Roy Way explores remote stretches of the Southern Scottish Highlands, across moorland, and along the shores of Loch Tay. The Rob Roy Way is the perfect hike for someone who is looking for an adventure without any grueling challenge. While the Scottish wilderness is impressive and often austere, the hiking maintains a certain levity, and the Scottish Munros are never so huge that the hiking becomes truly difficult for any reason other than distance.

Choose your adventure and discover the beauty, history, and allure of Scotland with Ryder-Walker. Whether you’re drawn to the mystique of the Highlands and Islands trek or the historical charm of the Rob Roy Way journey, both hikes promise an unforgettable exploration of Scotland’s hidden mysteries and lore.

Inverness to the Orkney Isles

  • Activity Overview: Ferry ride to Burray
  • Activity Level: Easy

We meet in Inverness, gateway to the Highlands, before traveling to the north coast to catch the ferry to Orkney. The Orkney Isles, about ten miles off the northern coast of Scotland, comprise an archipelago of about 70 islands. They boast some of Europe?s oldest and best-preserved Neolithic sites.

During our one-hour ferry crossing, we may spot a pod of dolphins riding the bow wave. Our destination is the island of Burray, just off the coast of Orkney?s main island, appropriately known by the locals simply as ?Mainland.? We settle in at our lovely hotel, built in 1860 as a fish store before it was renovated and transformed into a hotel in 1997. We enjoy a welcome dinner this evening.

Accommodations

Sands Hotel

Sands Hotel Burray, Scotland

Set in a 19th century building, the charming Sands Hotel is along the shore of Scapa Flow in the small fishing village of Burray. The modern and tastefully decorated rooms offer beautiful sea views overlooking Burray Harbor and Watersound Bay. The restaurant’s menu features the freshest local ingredients transformed into authentic Scottish specialties.

Coastal Hike & Skara Brae Stone Age Village

  • Activity Overview: Hiking
  • Activity Level: Easy to moderate
  • Activity Length: 2 hours (about 2.5 miles) elevation gain up to 650’

We begin our exploration with a spectacular hike along the dramatic coast from Brough Head to Marwick Head. Have your binoculars ready, as this is home to one of the largest seabird colonies in Scotland, including Herring gulls, Lesser-backed gulls and Long-billed curlew. After our walk, we visit Skara Brae, a Stone Age village which thrived for 600 years, between 3200 and 2200 BC. It remained buried under coastal sands for millennia until 1850, when a winter storm battered Orkney and stripped away the grass and sediment that had hidden it for so long. Its structures remained incredibly preserved under the sand.

We end our day at the Scapa whisky distillery, witnessing what goes into making Scotland?s prized spirit and sampling a wee dram for ourselves.

The Old Man of Hoy

  • Activity Level: Moderate
  • Activity Length: 4 hours (about 6 miles); elevation gain up to 720’

A short morning drive takes us past Scapa Flow. Sheltered by five of the Orkney Isles, it is one of the world?s great natural harbors, having hosted naval fleets from the Viking era to the time of World War II. But with its shallow, sandy bottom, it has also been witness to many shipwrecks. Upon arrival in Houton, we embark on a ferry to Hoy, the archipelago?s second largest island.

Our hike today traces the island?s dramatic coast, with sweeping views of some of Britain?s highest and most spectacular cliffs. The day?s highlight is the sea stack known affectionately as the Old Man of Hoy, a 449-foot tower of basalt soaring from a rocky point at the foot of the sea. It was first climbed in 1966, in a daring ascent led by mountaineers Sir Charles Bonington and Dougal Haston, and televised by the BBC. We?ll have amazing views of the Old Man from nearby cliffs, and might even spot some climbers clinging to its vertical walls. We return via the picturesque Rackwick Bay, with its crescent beach.

Orkney to the West Highlands

  • Activity Length: 1 hour (about 1.5 miles); elevation gain up to 165’

We ferry back to mainland Scotland today, then enjoy a scenic and leisurely four-hour transfer through the West Highlands to the picture-perfect village of Plockton. Along the way, we pause for photo opportunities and for a short hike into a cascading waterfall, where we might catch sight of salmon jumping against the torrent to get upriver.

In Plockton, there will be time to explore the waterfront lined with palm trees, perhaps meeting one of the artists who gather here to capture the area?s coastal charms on canvas. We close our day at the Plockton Inn, a cozy seaside spot boasting award-winning seafood and a friendly pub. If we a?re lucky, there wi?ll be local musicians playing traditional folk songs here.

Plockton Inn

Plockton Inn Plockton, Scotland

Set in the heart of the beautiful village of Plockton, in the West Highlands, the Plockton Inn is well known for its exceptional hospitality, award-winning seafood restaurant, and breathtaking sea views. Sample a local malt or ale in the lively pub while listening to traditional Scottish music of local musicians.

Isle of Skye

  • Activity Length: 3 hours (about 4.3 miles); elevation gain up to 400’

Today we take our cue from the beloved folk tune, The Skye Boat Song, and speed 'over the sea to Skye' to the tiny settlement of Elgol. Here, we board a boat to the remote bay of Loch Scavaig, just as Queen Victoria herself once did. This beautiful body of water is surrounded by the Black Cuillin Mountains, which serve as the backdrop for our gently sloping hike along their base. The trail skirts the shores of Loch Coruisk, whose wild beauty and rugged mountains inspired Sir Walter Scott and Lord Tennyson to capture the gorgeous landscape in verse.

*If joining our August 2023 departure, this day will be devoted to attending the Isle of Skye Highland Games. This open-air event dates to 1877 and takes place on a scenic headland with views of the harbour. Locals and visitors alike flock to the 'Games Field' to watch an array of athletic and cultural competitions including Highland Dancing in full tartan regalia, bagpipping, and the 'Heavy Events,' in which athletes compete in areas such as hammer throw, weight over bar, caber toss, and tug of war, all while wearing a kilt! We are free to watch the spectacle at the field and meander the craft and food stalls.

Plockton to Loch Ness

  • Activity Length: 3-4 hours, 6 miles, 1,000' elevation gain

Our day begins with a trail hike from our hotel in the village of Plockton. A steady and moderate ascent along even terrain rewards us at the summit with excellent views of Isle of Skye and the fishing village of Applecross. From here, we may peek at the village of Plockton a bit beyond the cairn. Our descent takes us through forested land and along the shore of a loch. We may be able to glimpse over the water to see a crannog — the remains of an ancient island dwelling.

A short drive after our hike delivers us to the Eilean Donan Castle. A Scottish icon set amidst magnificent vistas, it is easy to see why this is one of the country's most photographed spots. After a visit, we transfer to our lovely hotel in Fort Augustus — set at the southwest tip of the mysterious Loch Ness!

The Lovat

The Lovat Fort Augustus, Scotland

The Lovat is a landmark Victorian Loch Ness hotel overlooking the loch-side village of Fort Augustus. It is surrounded by stunning scenery, sitting at the southern tip of the mysterious deep waters of Loch Ness. This exceptional eco-friendly Highland hotel offers rooms of modern comfort combined with traditional aspects of Highland life, and views of the Highland mountains, Caledonian Canal or world-famous Loch Ness.

Glen Affric

  • Activity Length: 4-7 hours (up to 10 miles); elevation gain up to 1300’

Today is one of our most scenic days as we hike the trails of Glen Affric, widely regarded as one of Scotland's most beautiful valleys. Blanketed by Scots pines, the glen's slopes reach up to resplendent peaks that overlook the pristine waters of Loch Affric. There are countless options for great hikes in this glen, so we're spoiled for choice. Our guide will decide on the best hike which will ensure magnificent views of this unique wilderness of pinewoods and moorland. If you're up for it, we may hike to a summit for an elevated panorama across the numerous peaks of the Highlands.

Loch Ness to Inverness

  • Activity Overview: Scenic drive to Inverness and departures

After breakfast, we return to Inverness. But we can?t visit Loch Ness without pausing to look for the elusive monster in its waters. After stopping for a search, we continue to the lakeside ruins of Urquhart Castle, once a stronghold of Robert the Bruce, and one of Scotland?'s largest medieval castles. A final scenic drive returns us to Inverness and our journey?'s end.

Please note that this is a typical itinerary, and actual activities may vary due to weather conditions, local events, and to allow serendipity to play a hand in your experience. Accommodations are as outlined in the itinerary, although we reserve the right to change these or the order visited should the need arise.

What To Expect

Physical activity.

Boundless Journeys' trips are designed for energetic and flexible individuals who like to be active and have a spirit of adventure and a positive attitude. Scotland: Highlands & Islands Hiking is rated 3, moderate, on a scale of 1-5 (with 5 being the most strenuous). The hikes will be conducted at a leisurely pace, but average 4-7 hours per day on a full day of hiking. They are a mixture of hikes along coastal and loch paths, and through barren mountains and heather fields. Some days are planned as half-day hikes, and these are a bit easier.

The terrain in the Highlands is mountainous and rugged, and there are typically daily ascents and descents of up to 1,500 feet. Scotland has excellent walking paths, but not all trails have level footing. You may encounter roots, rocks, mud, and loose gravel. It is important that you are in generally fit aerobic shape. Our guides will select hikes that they feel will be enjoyable and appropriate for the ability level of the group. There are a wide variety of hikes available in each location, making it easy for our guides to pick the perfect outing each day.

Meeting Point

Inverness, Scotland

Departure Point

Traveling to and from.

Most Convenient Airport: Inverness, Scotland (airport code INV); or Edinburgh, Scotland (airport code EDI). Inverness is the most convenient as this is where the trip begins. Edinburgh may provide better flight options and will allow for exploration of this fascinating city before or after your trip.

Meeting Time and Place: Inverness, Scotland train station; 12:00 p.m. Your Boundless Journeys guide will meet you at the Inverness train station on Day 1 of our trip.

Departure Time and Place: Inverness, Scotland train station; 1:00 p.m.

Scotland's weather conditions can vary greatly, even in the course of a single afternoon. It is not uncommon to have deep blue skies followed by "soft" weather (the local term for a bit of rain). Then the cycle begins again. Therefore, it is essential to be prepared for a variety of conditions -- including dressing in layers and wearing quick-drying clothing. Waterproof hiking boots are not a bad idea either, as you may encounter water or mud along the trails. You can expect the average daytime temperatures to range from the low 60s to mid seventies (Fahrenheit), although it may feel colder on the hikes, especially if it is windy.

You may obtain more detailed weather information by visiting www.weatherbase.com.

High: 60 Low: 49

High: 63 Low: 52

Scotland enjoys a milder climate than you might expect, and spring comes quite early. We feel that spring and summer are ideal times to visit Scotland, as the temperatures are comfortable for walking.

Scottish cuisine has come a long way in the past decades, from a time when fish and chips, haggis, and meat pies where the only items to be found on the menu. Modern Scottish cuisine has grown from these traditional dishes and uses fresh local ingredients (seafood, lamb, and root vegetables) in culinary creations that are sure to delight. Vegetarians can be accommodated with advance notice, though choices tend to be more limited.

We love the wide-screen scale of the Scottish Highlands. Great heather-covered moors roll into a broad, blue horizon. Ruined castles stand watch over silvery lochs. There’s a wonderful wildness to it all. But for all of that sweep and solitude, it’s the close-ups of local life that we remember best. You’ll meet the shepherd whose choreographed collies steer a flock with fluid grace. We walk with a naturalist along a windswept North Sea estuary famous for its salmon runs. And we’ll also introduce you to fascinating folks like the cashmere weavers of Elgin…the whisky aficionados at an artisanal distillery…and the groundskeepers who manicure a 600-year-old golf course to within a micron of perfection. Throughout, you’ll spend your nights in lovely country house hotels, and enjoy a wide range of walks from canal towpaths to Edinburgh’s lively High Street. We suspect you’ll join our honorary clan of travelers who count the Scottish Highlands as one of their favorite destinations ever.

• Enjoy an 'Only with Classic Journeys' afternoon as you savor traditional tea before ascending to the ancient Edinburgh Castle with your expert local guide for an up-close tour

• Spend a fascinating morning with a shepherd and his amazing team of collies in the quiet Highlands countryside.

• Cruise across infamous Loch Ness to Urquhart Castle and a scenic walk in a Caledonian forest

• Strike out on foot to explore historic Culloden Moor before meeting up with the craftsmen at a cashmere mill

• Join a naturalist to go Puffin watching on the coastal footpaths along the shores of Isle of May

• Accept an invitation to St. Andrews, the legendary home of golf, for a guided walk on the 600-year-old Old Course

• Visit Falkland Palace, the country residence of Mary, Queen of Scots, before a whisky tasting at an artisanal distillery

So we find the most well-connected local guides who share their relationships and knowledge with us. And with them, we handcraft walking tours in cinematic settings that allow you to see the world on foot and at eye level.

It’s why Travel + Leisure magazine has named Classic Journeys as the #1 World’s Best Tour Operator multiple times, and the editors of T+L say, "Classic Journeys provides unbeatable access to experiences around the globe." Here’s what that access means for you every time you travel with us.

  • Experience the world on foot and at eye level. Each day, join your guide on the most cinematic footpaths in the region.

An average of fewer than 10 guests per departure means we can offer you special access to sites like Stonehenge so you experience the stone circle when it’s closed to the general public, a guided visit to Zion Narrows that other companies cannot arrange because of larger group sizes, and vineyard walks with a count and countess in Tuscany.
  • Award-winning hotels are waiting for you at the end of every day. Luxuriate in the finest and most distinctive accommodations in the region you’re exploring, including rainforest lodges, 16th century villas, and award-winning properties that show up on World’s Best and Gold lists.
  • Eat like (and with) the locals. Food is a foolproof way into the hearts, homes and history of the places you visit with us. From gourmet picnics to coveted local restaurants, our meals offer you opportunities to explore native food traditions and fine dining.
  • Handcrafted itineraries with all activities included. With our long-term friendships, we know our walking tour regions more personally than anyone else. So you get thoughtfully curated itineraries that combine explorations of the villages, organic farms, archeological sites and the people who know them best.
  • Sustainable travel that supports the places you’re visiting. We put our local currency into the pockets of the people who live where we travel. It’s your guarantee that you’ll have authentic, up-close experiences on your trip. Best of all, our person-to-person approach helps sustain their ways of life.

In Scotland's realm of mist-shrouded crags and heathered moors, we've crafted a hiking trip from the legendary Isle of Skye to the wild seascapes of the Outer Hebrides, a haven of Scottish Gaelic culture on the outer edge of Europe. Our trails bring us to the glistening lochs of Glen Affric, the sandy beaches of Harris, and among the pinnacles of the Quiraing, a geological wonder and an icon of Scotland. Between hikes, we'll be welcomed into the culture as we meet a tweed weaver, listen to a seanchaidh (storyteller), sample fresh scallops, sip fine single-malt whisky, and hear tales of the Campbell and MacDonald clans.

Trip Levels

With more than 200 different adventures to choose from, we want to help you find the trip that’s right for you. Our Trip Level system ranks each trip in two ways: a number rating from 1 to 6 according to the activity, and general travel rigors. 1 is the easiest and 6+ the most difficult—see descriptions below for explanations of each number. A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Day 1 - Welcome to Scotland

Arrive in Edinburgh! You are free to explore Edinburgh on your own. We’ll meet up as a group at 7pm for orientation and a Welcome Dinner.

Edinburgh has been the capital of Scotland since the 15th Century. Gaining UNESCO World Heritage Status in 1995, Old Town and New Town are preserved architectural windows to a world dating back to 1130 AD. Step back nearly 900 years and stroll the historic streets of Old Town. This area of Edinburgh has preserved much of the medieval street layout and buildings. After you’ve explored all of the narrow alleys and cobblestone walkways, make your way through Princes Street Gardens for an iconic view of Edinburgh Castle. Marvel in New Town where you’ll witness Neo-Classical Architecture from the 18th Century.

Accommodation : Centrally located Edinburgh Hotel Meals : D

Day 2 - Waterfall hike in the North-West Highlands

After breakfast in Edinburgh, we’ll hop on the train and travel 3.5 hours through the Scottish countryside and Cairngorms National Park to Inverness. We’ll then head off into the North-West Highlands in our Explorer Chick Transport Van. This area remains an unspoiled and rarely visited area of Scotland. During our time hiking in the Scottish Highlands, we’ll explore landscapes that hardly see much human traffic.

We won’t the entire day on our bums! Upon arrival, we’ll stretch our legs on our first hike in Scotland by walking along a beautiful loch with views of the Torridon Mountains and ending next to a rushing waterfall.

Elevation Gain : 575′ Distance : 4.5 miles Time : 3 hours hiking

Transfer : 3.5 hours train, 1+ hour Van Accommodation : Inn, Torridon Meals : B-L-D

Day 3 - Hiking in the Torridons

After fueling up with a rib-sticking Scottish-style breakfast, our hiking journey today is the Corbett peak of Meall a’Ghiubhais (Corbett = peak between 2,500-3,000’).

We begin with a heart-pounding ascent from the breathtaking shores of Loch Maree, renowned as the crown jewel among Scotland’s lochs. Following the well-marked and rocky Beinn Eighe Mountain Trail we will push our boundaries as we venture off the trail to continue our hike and scramble toward the summit. Every step of our hike today is a buns-burning celebration of the untamed beauty that Scotland has to offer.

After a well-deserved trail lunch perched on the summit, surrounded with views of the tiny wooded islands dotting Loch Maree below, we’ll take in the full beauty of the Northwest Highlands from the oldest Nature Reserve in Scotland.

Meall a’Ghiubhais Peak Elevation: 2,901’ Elevation Gain: 3,011’ Distance: 5.8 miles Time: 7-8 hours

Accommodation : Inn, Torridon Meals : B-L-D

Day 4 - Scramble to the Rocky Summit of Cul Mor

After breakfast, we’ll pack up and depart our cozy Torridon Inn. We’ll transfer further north to the sparsely populated area of Assynt. Assynt is known for its distinctive mountains which seem to rise straight out from the landscape. This area is home to the iconic “cnoc and lochan” scenery.

We’ll hike and scramble our way up the classic peak of Cul Mor to catch views of the nearby mountains and lochs. We’ll hike our way towards the dramatic outline of Cul Mor while hiking through some boggy sections of the trail and a short boulder field. Near the summit, you’ll have the option of taking the shortest path and scrambling your way to the summit. If scrambling isn’t your cup of tea, you can easily opt to traverse around the wide, Sron Gharbh ridge line. Once we all reach the summit, we’ll have views of multiple lochs in the distance, dramatic mountain outlines, and nothing but Mother Nature’s beauty for as far as our eyes can see.

Still looking for more? Hike up the satellite peak, Creag nan Calman, from the saddle between the two mountains and bag two peaks in one day!

Cul Mor Peak Elevation : 2,650′ Elevation Gain : 1,900′ Distance : 8.5 miles Time : 4-5.5 hours hiking

Accommodation : Inn, Ullapool Meals : B-L-D

Day 5 - Hiking the Coastline Cliffs

We’ll give our hiking legs a little break today as explore the rugged coastline that is so typical of the North-West Scottish Highlands. Our coastal hike explores this wild landscape and leads us to a clifftop viewpoint to see an imposing 200 ft rocky tower called the Old Man of Stoer. We’ll look for rock climbers ascending the vertical tower as the ocean crashes below. Because views are much better with food, we’ll enjoy savory pies for lunch made in a local village along the coastline with unobstructed views of the Atlantic. Nearby, we’ll visit the Stoer Head Lighthouse, built in 1870, as one of 45 crucial lighthouses in Scotland to protect shipping.

Afterwards, we’ll begin our slow journey to the nearby villages where traffic jams are the equivalent of sheep crossings. You’ll have the opportunity to tour and shop at a local pottery studio with an international reputation for innovation and quality.

Back in Ullapool, we have built in 1-2 hours of free time for you to explore the seaside town and shop locally made goods/souvenirs. Wander the quaint streets, check out the marina, savor a drink from a local pub, or simply relax by the water.

Elevation Gain : Minimal Distance : 4.5 miles Time : 2.5-3.5 hours hiking

Day 6 - The Triple Summit of Quinag

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll head north into the rugged landscape of the Assynt region of the Scottish Islands. Our goal today is to summit a stunning trio of peaks on Quinag. It’s a predominately uphill hike as we ascend the first of 3 Corbetts (Scottish mountain between 2,500ft and 3,000ft). We’ll hike up boulder fields, along ridge lines and scramble our way to the first summit! We’ll be rewarded with views of thousands of tiny scattered lochs in the distant horizon. From the first summit, we’ll take a gradual down and uphill hike to the remaining 2 summits.

On the way back to our Inn, we stop to see the ruins of Ardvreck Castle dating back to the 16th century.

Elevation Gain : 1,950′ Distance : 8.5-9 miles Time : 7.5-8.5 hours hiking

Accommodation : Inn, Ullapool Meals : B, L, D

Day 7 -15th Century Castle

We’ll trade our cozy Inn for a 15th century castle hotel tonight! Along the drive to our castle hotel, we’ll stretch our legs on a relaxed hike to the summit of Ben Bhraggie. Here, we’ll be able to see the east and west coasts of Scotland from one place! The controversial, 100′ tall Duke of Sutherland Monument marks the summit of Ben Bhraggie.

Upon arrival to our castle hotel, you’ll be able to explore the nearby beach or step back in time to the 15th century. Inside, explore the labyrinth of historical rooms and passageways. Walk through the gardens to the on-site distillery specializing in whisky and gin. In the evening, we’ll feast like queens in our castle restaurant featuring traditional meals made of locally sourced ingredients.

Elevation Gain : 1,312′ Distance : 6 miles Time : 3.5-4.5 hours hiking

Accommodation : 15th Century Castle Hotel Meals : B, L, D

Day 8 - Goodbye Scottish Countryside

After breakfast in our castle digs, we’ll load up and head to the Inverness Train Station. We’ll hop on the train back to Edinburgh and say goodbye to the Scottish countryside. You will be with your Explorer Chick group up until our arrival at Waverly Station in Edinburgh. Upon arrival in Edinburgh, you can easily catch the tram taking you to the airport or to city centre if are staying another night in Edinburgh.

You can plan to fly out of Edinburgh anytime after 6pm or arrange for a Edinburgh hotel stay on your own.

More from Scotland

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 EC Guide Savannah just returned with 7 beautiful souls from 8 days of badassery in bonnie Scotland.  "These ladies were so inspiring!  They did not flinch at the rough terrain or rainy weather and laughter was the ongoing theme.  We talked poop, we talked travel, and we talked family.  They laughed at every dad joke, shared personal stories and struggles, and always had each other`s backs.  🥾 We hiked over some of the oldest rock in the world!  The 3 billion-year-old lewisian gneiss that is the foundation of the rugged northwest highlands and the heather topped torridonian sandstone did not disappoint.  ☀ We had sunshine and we had rain💧, a wee bit of each.  We had whiskey on mountain tops and haggis, fresh seafood and fresh veg for dinner.  The adorable cozy inns that we stayed in were sooooo cozy!  Altogether, this was an amazing trip!" 👑 Are you a hiking QUEEN!? Hiking in Scotland

Everything you need to know about walking in Scotland.

Scotland has some of the very best walking opportunities in the world. Here we take a look at some of the best walking in Scotland opportunities and how they can fit in with your wider itineraries. From gigantic Munros to low level strolls, it’s incredibly easy to escape to nature wherever you are in the country. So take a hike…

Scotland, created for walking !

Go on, we know you want to! Walking in Scotland means mighty mountains to conquer, plenty of forest paths or coastal walks to meander along, charming villages to discover, and exciting city routes to explore.

Whether you’d like to enjoy a walking holiday, or simply an afternoon’s amble, you’re definitely in the right place. What are you waiting for? It’s time to explore one of Scotland’s best assets – the great outdoors!

Scotland’s amazingly diverse landscape, including majestic mountains, rolling hills, glorious glens, sparkling lochs and a dramatic coastline dotted with beautiful islands, oers a wealth of walking for all. So easy to reach from across the world and with a fantastic network of transport routes once you’re here, it’s no wonder that Scotland is so popular with visitors.

Add to this a huge range of breathtaking landscapes with walking routes, that range from easy-going strolls to multiday adventures, and you have many reasons to rejoice that you have chosen our small, neatly packaged country for your active holiday.

Where will you go walking first ?

12 mainland regions, and 2 National Parks.

The seven cities of Scotland – Edinburgh (the capital), Glasgow (the largest), Aberdeen, Dundee, Inverness, Stirling and Perth – and a wealth of picturesque and historic towns, provide a great base for exploring 12 mainland regions and two National Parks. In this guide, we showcase all the regions of Scotland, each with their unique landscapes, paths and trails, and all of them oering a warm Scottish welcome.

In southern Scotland, which includes the Scottish Borders and Dumfries & Galloway, the undulating countryside and peaceful beaches are home to many easier walks, which are ideal for a family outing or a leisurely stroll. This area also boasts some wilder moorlands and high peaks for further walking challenges.

Heading northwards, the landscape changes from lowlands to the magnificent Highlands. The Highland Fault Line, the geological feature that crosses Scotland from the Isle of Arran and Helensburgh in the south west to Stonehaven in the north east, creates a striking change in the landscape.

The beautiful waters of Loch Lomond are situated on this fault line and walkers to Loch Lomond, The Trossachs, Stirling & Forth Valley are truly spoilt for choice. Perhaps you’ll choose an easy walk along a lochside or hike to the summit of one of many hills or mountains in this region.

Further north, the landscape rises ever more dramatically as you reach the regions of Perthshire and the Highlands. A popular challenge is to seek out a Corbett or Munro for a lofty hike.

The increasingly popular pursuit of Munro and Corbett bagging sees walkers ticking off hill lists, including the 282 Munros with a summit of more than 3,000 ft (914 m) and the 222 Corbetts with a peak height of between 2,500 ft (762 m) and 3,000 ft (914 m). While many of the summits require experience and high levels of energy, others are perfectly suited to walking newcomers. These regions are not just for experienced hikers, however. In valleys, glens and forests, and along sandy shorelines or close to rivers and lochs, many easier trail gems can be explored on foot. On so many occasions, walkers are treated to fabulous views and wildlife spotting opportunities.

Perthshire is also famed as Scotland’s ‘Big Tree Country’ and boasts many natural treats, such as the world’s tallest hedge and one of the world’s oldest trees. The woodlands and forests are home to so many trails and paths that you will never run out of walking options.

Scotland’s coast is a big draw for visitors. The Kingdom of Fife is famed for its string of pretty fishing villages dotted along a long shoreline, as well as atmospheric forests and gentler hills.

Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, further north, combines city entertainment and an outstanding urban beach with very scenic countryside and a superb coast, all dotted with numerous walking routes.

From adventurous outings to romantic excursions, the islands of Scotland oer a wonderful get-away-from-it-all atmosphere. In the northerly, yet still highly accessible, islands that make up Orkney and Shetland, there are many walks that link natural, historical and archaeological treasures in one route.

Other islands, such as those in the Outer Hebrides, promise a wide variety of walking all in one chain, from hills and coast, to lochans and spectacular beaches. Those stunning remoste islands are very impressive and will make feel away from it all! There are over 790 islands in Scotland so there is plenty to explore!

hiking tour in scotland

The two National Parks, Cairngorms and Loch Lomond & The Trossachs, oer vast areas of natural beauty that are specially managed and conserved to showcase the very best of Scotland’s natural jewels. Walks range from short and sweet to memorably epic.

Scotland is also famed for a long list of waymarked long-distance trails, that offer day after day of wonderful walking, or the option to enjoy a shorter section over a half or a full day.

The original long-distance trail is the West Highland Way, running from north of Glasgow to Fort William. In the south, you’ll find the Southern Upland Way, and the John Buchan Way, among others.

Further north, there’s the Great Glen Way, the East Highland Way and the Loch Ness Trail.

The life of John Muir, the ‘Father of National Parks’ is celebrated with a route from the west to the east coast, called the John Muir Way.

When to hike in Scotland ?

Scotland is a place where walking can be enjoyed in all seasons, although you should be prepared for changeable weather. In autumn, the fabulous colours of foliage will delight you, while in spring you’ll enjoy fresh air and fantastic wild flowers. Summer oers warmer days and lush scenery, yet equally in winter, the views can be as impressive thanks to the drama of the moody sky and snowcovered mountains.

What equipment ?

There are some gear and equipment that every hiker will find necessary, and these include  a waterproof jacket, walking trousers, gaiters, a water bottle and trekking poles.

It’s essential to be properly prepared for hiking in Scotland. As we’ve said the weather can be unpredictable and the trail can be rough. You should be properly clothed with warm layers underneath and waterproof layers on top – both waterproof jacket and trousers if it is raining. Good footwear is crucial and things like sneakers or trainers really aren’t suitable. At the very least you need walking shoes with a good tread, but proper waterproof walking boots are best.

For day hikes you’ll need a small rucksack to carry your spare clothes, lunch plus snacks and anything extra such as a camera. Walking poles are a popular choice and hats and gloves should always be in your bag except when it’s forecast to be warm and nice all day.

What kind of Landscapes ?

Where in Scotland should you visit? The Highlands and Islands are home to most of Scotland’s mountains, and hence are where most people like to hike. But there is tremendous variation from area to area so one place is very different from another. We break it down into the following regions: The West Highlands, the North West Highlands, the Cairngorms and Central Highlands, the Inner Hebrides, the Outer Hebrides, Shetland and Orkney.

Seeking ideas for waling/hiking tours which offer shorter distances (up to 10-12 km/day or 6-8 miles/day)?

It seems that many tours, even the "easy" ones, have longer hiking days of up to 22 km/day. With some physical challenges, I worry that's a bit much for me.

Planning to travel in mid Sept. Prefer better quality lodging.

Looking for planned tours but willing to plan our own if necessary.....but not sure how the bag transfer would work in that case!

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

have you any particular area in mind? Once you get into Rural highlands the problem you will encounter is that there are many areas without anything at all 6-8 miles apart, have you considered basing yourselves in one place (grantown comes to mind) and explore "there and back" walk options, or perhaps shorter walks involving a taxi or public transport to the start or finish?

One guided holiday option might be https://www.hfholidays.co.uk/holidays-and-tours/7-night-scottish-highlands-guided-walking-holiday

If you are thinking long distance trails then the West Highland Way done over longer than usual might be an option for example https://www.macsadventure.com/holiday-11/west-highland-way/

I have walked with HF at their house in the western highlands. Each day they offer walks at 2-4 different levels, depending on season and how full the house is. Generally the easiest walk level is no more than 6-8 miles, and they sometimes offer easier and/or slower walks than that. They also do a limited number of walks that combine walking and sightseeing.

Road Scholar also does trips to Scotland but am not sure if any are strictly walking.

Sorry, the American company Backroads is I believe based in Berkeley, CA.

You could check out Macs Adventures also(no connection with myself!):

https://www.macsadventure.com

You could have a look at Inntravel holidays. I have gone on several of their walking holidays abroad and really enjoyed them. They have different levels of walking effort from gentle to challenging.

Their description of their gentlest grade is:

"You don’t need to be a seasoned walker or fit enough to walk for miles and miles over rugged terrain to enjoy an Inntravel walking holiday – our holidays are all about seeing a region up close, not bagging peaks. We encourage you to pause at every opportunity, be it a monument, a viewpoint or a craftsman’s workshop. There’s no luggage to weigh you down, and, with no group, it’s you who sets the pace.

You can rely on us to select accommodation of character and to provide trustworthy route notes to guide you there, so relax and enjoy… "

The hotels I stayed in were nice and characterful with very good food. More details at https://www.inntravel.co.uk/walking-holidays/uk/scotland
