Travel by Ferry

Ferry Graphic

Two ferry lines - Hy-Line Cruises and the Steamship Authority - provide convenient, year-round service from Hyannis to Nantucket. Both run high-speed passenger catamarans with a travel time of approximately one hour.

The Steamship Authority also runs a traditional car-and-passenger ferry, with a 2 ¼ hour cruise time. Secure, on-site and off-site parking is available at both terminals in Hyannis for a nominal fee. There are accessible parking spaces available at both terminal parking areas.

Freedom Cruise Line in Harwich Port and Seastreak in New Bedford, New York City and Highland, NJ, provides seasonal high-speed ferry service to the island. A seasonal inter-island ferry operated by Hy-Line Cruises runs between Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard from late May to early October.

Steamship Authority

The Hyannis and Nantucket terminal buildings are completely wheelchair accessible with accessible rest rooms.

High-Speed M/V Iyanough

The main passenger deck of the Steamship Authority’s high-speed ferry, the M/V Iyanough is fully accessible (including rest rooms and the food and beverage service area). Access to the M/V Iyanough’s main passenger deck is by the transfer bridge that is used to board all passengers onto the ferry. Please inform an attendant upon arrival if you need any special assistance with boarding.

Passenger/Vehicle Ferries

M/V Eagle, M/V Nantucket & M/V Woods Hole

Each ferry is equipped with elevators that transport passengers between the vehicle deck and all passenger decks (including the food and beverage service area). Access to the elevator is via the transfer bridge that is used to load vehicles onto the ferry. Passengers wishing to use the elevator should arrive at the ferry terminal thirty (30) minutes prior to their scheduled departure time. Upon arriving, they should notify a terminal agent (or the terminal employee checking them in) that they require access to the elevator for boarding. This applies to all passengers who wish to use the elevator whether or not they are traveling with their vehicles. Accessible rest rooms are also available on all of our large passenger/vehicle ferries.

First time to travel to Martha's Vineyard. Traveling on the Hy-Line was the perfect start. Great service. A special shout out to Michelle. She answered questions, took photos and is a great representative for your company. Oct 2 / party of 5

This location of Hy-Line Cruises is located in Hyannis, MA on the mainland. It was the starting point for us, on our trip to see the two neighborhood islands of Martha's Vineyard (MV) and Nantucket on the same day. By using Hy-Line and paying a higher price than the competitors, one can cut the journey time in half (basically the one-way trip is about an hour). One can buy tickets and parking on-line. Parking your car at Hyannis can be difficult, would recommend to prepay for a remote lot spot ($17) and take the complementary shuttle to the pier...the spots will sell out/be full during the busy summer. We needed to catch the 6:10 AM ferry to Nantucket ($48 each person), and they make it very clear that it would be safest to be checked in 30 minutes before departure. We got to the remote parking lot (we parked at lot 8) at 5:05, and most of the spots were already taken (probably for folks staying overnight at Nantucket or MV). It got full later in the day, but for our early slot, we found a spot. A shuttle was already headed towards the pier, and it stopped to see if we needed a ride. We had already prepaid (and put the printed receipt on the dash), so we were good to go. It's about 1.5 miles from the pier, so got there by 5:20. The office opened at 5:25, and provides air conditioned waiting areas if you don't want to wait outside. There were a lot of people already waiting, mostly workers who needed to get to the island to start their day. There is plenty of security milling around the area. Everybody started to get into the main lline around 5:40 and they let us on at 5:50, with an ontime departure of 6:10am. We sat in the lower deck, which had the snack bar (hot breakfast, beverages, alcohol). Most of the seats were facing forward, 3 in a group at the sides with the center having tables facing each other (would be great to play cards with friends, which is what some folks were doing) It's a big ship, and most of the seats were full (day workers). I would guess that this is probably the most crowded one of the day. If you sit inside, there isn't much sway, and I didn't see anybody look uncomfortable from motion sickness. The ship can really move, and we got into Nantucket around 7:15am. People with luggage had placed them in carts before boarding the boat. These same carts were made available when disembarking, to pick up your bags. As we disembarked, the folks wanting to do the opposite trek were already in line, ready to board. And the cycle began again....

Appreciate the heads up about the cancelation at 8 pm when we had somewhere to be in the morning, causing us to have to find alternate travel and missing half of a concert. Update: was able to get in stand by an hour later. Staff friendly.

Fun ride. Comfortable seating. Good views. Suggest eating or beverage consuming beforehand. There is only 1 counterperson for entire boat and she is swamped. Very long line. Then after a long wait u pay $3.25 for a soda which is 4 sips and an entire cup of ice. I don't mind paying extra in a resort but give me what i pay for please. Good stuff : I don't think we could've had a more pleasant boat ride up and down the Hudson in the Catskills. Many things to see. Sweeping vistas all around and the boat is set up in such a manner that you can see everything. We will definitely do this again. Next time we get to the Catskills.

Very easy to schedule online and get access to. It was very confusing that if you pre-pay the parking there's no one their to direct you on getting a printed pass so I left our printed itinerary on the dashboard. Convenient shuttle from the lot to the dock. They also are up charging $3/ person if you change as a fuel surcharge which I didn't agree with since I had paid ahead and just was moving to an earlier boat upon the return.

This was my first time taking this ferry to Martha's Vineyard. It is not easy traveling with a toddler, but the company was so accommodating. We arrived at the parking lot and I noticed we just missed a shuttle to the boat. The dispatcher lady was on it, she called all the shuttle's and let them know we had to get to the shuttle asap to not miss our boat. We had to move so fast but between the shuttle, and the ticket we made it. It was a comfortable and beautiful ride.

First time taking the ferry from Hyannis to Nantucket. Purchase of tickets easy; boarding process smooth. Sat on outdoor upper deck for a beautiful journey to Nantucket for the day. Ran pretty much ontime (about 10 minutes late each way but no big deal.). We looked to change our return trip to an earlier ferry and we went to the ferry desk in Nantucket and were assisted easily and accommodated with no change fee. When getting off the ferry in Nantucket it's breathtaking! Checked it off my bucket list! Highly recommend.

Since they pretty much have a monopoly of passenger ferry services between Cape Cod & Nantucket, there really isn't much to "not like". Easy to book online, easy to board. They saw us with strollers and kids and always invited us for priority boarding. Has restrooms (some with changjng tables), snack bars, 3 floors with plenty of windows and some open deck areas. Even puke bags scattered around for anyone who needs them, although the boat is fast and large enough that even my sensitive MIL didn't feel any motion sicknesses. We spent the extra money to upgrade to "captain's view" for bigger spaces and comfortable seats but was probably not necessary as the boat seemed huge with lots of room to occupy. Main issue was that it was COLD. I guess its the luxury of high blast A/C when its hot outside...

Exceptional Service - A Class Act On our return trip from Nantucket to Cape Cod (July 6 on the 7:05 PM departure) my wife had a medical episode waiting to board, I called out to the crew and they summoned the paramedics. Before the paramedics cleared my wife to travel all the other passengers had boarded. The Captain told us not to worry, he would wait until the paramedics cleared my wife and boarded. To me, that went well above and beyond. Once on board the First Officer found us seats together. When we were about to deboard the First Office unexpectedly showed up and took us out a side exit so my wife would not have to wait in line to deboard. Hy-Line Cruises is defintely a class act

I took the hy-line from Hyannis to Nantucket for a weekend visit. It left on time and arrived exactly when it was suppose to. I changed my return trip twice and never had a problem doing it. The ferry was clean. There was a snack bar in back where I could get a cup of coffee for the trip.

Hy-Line Cruises and the Steamship Authority: Nantucket’s Lifeline to the Main Land

Nantucket Living

One of our favorite ways to get to and from Nantucket is by way of a ferry. Ease into island time and take in breathtaking ocean views as you make your way across Nantucket Sound and into the heart of Nantucket. When planning your trip, you will find that two main ferry companies offer service to and from the island; the Steamship Authority and Hy-Line Cruises . Both companies offer hour-long fast ferry options from Hyannis, while the Steamship Authority additionally offers a traditional car ferry with a crossing time of just over two hours.

getting to nantucket

Hy-Line Cruises

Hy-Line Cruises operates two boats on their Hyannis to Nantucket route, the Grey Lady and Grey Lady IV . The Grey Lady has operated as a year-round ferry since 2003 and features two levels of seating, including an outdoor area on the top level for taking in ocean views as you cross the water. Hy-Line Cruises’ newest ferry acquisition, Grey Lady IV , is a 150’ 3-level boat with two areas of outdoor seating and the new “Captain’s View” – an exclusive seating section inside on the second level. Each ferry has a layout that mixes rows of individual seats with group seating and options with tables. Also equipped with free Wi-Fi, TVs for entertainment, full-service snack bars, and restrooms, a trip on either ferry offers plenty of amenities for your traveling comfort.

Nantucket Ferries Steamship Authority

Steamship Authority

The Steamship Authority provides ferry passage to Nantucket for everything from travelers to vehicles carrying supplies that keep the busy island moving. The ferry that is often used when bringing your vehicle to Nantucket, the M/V Eagle, is commonly referred to as the “car ferry” or the “slow boat.” The lower level of the M/V Eagle is reserved for vehicles that load on one end and depart on the other, while the upper-level features seating for 768 people, including passengers and crew. Rounding out the passenger level are a full-service snack bar, free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, as well as restrooms. For those looking for “fast ferry” service to the island, the M/V Iyanough is the Steamship Authority’s passenger-only option. The 154’ boat carries up to 400 people and has three levels, an outdoor seating area, free Wi-Fi access, and flat-screen TVs throughout the interior. Other amenities on the M/V Iyanough include a snack bar featuring beer, wine, and mixed drinks, as well as a variety of hot and cold menu items to choose from.

hy line cruises hyannis schedule

The Nantucket ferry schedules change with the seasons. Your best bet for accurate schedules is to check the individual company websites or nantucketferries.com , which is updated with the most current ferry schedule for both the Hy-Line and Steamship.

captiains View hyline nantucket ferry

On the newer Hy-Line ferry, Grey Lady IV, passengers are given the option to upgrade to Captain’s View seating. The Captain’s View upgrade is limited to 32 passengers and allows you to pre-board the ferry and enjoy a designated seating section with the only forward-facing view off the front of the boat.

The Steamship Authority offers eFerry ticketing granting you a way to book your tickets conveniently through your phone.

Regardless of which ferry you choose for your journey to and from Nantucket, be sure to toss a penny overboard as you depart. Local legend has it that if you toss a penny into the harbor as you round iconic Brant Point, you assure a future return to Nantucket.

Hy-Line Cruises

Hy-Line Cruises is a family-run operator based in Massachusetts, USA, boasting the second largest ferry and cruise passenger service from Nantucket to Hyannis and Cape Cod to the nearby island of Martha’s Vineyard.

The company began in 1962 under the name Hyannis Harbor Tours, and was operated by brothers Richard and Robert Scudder, with sightseeing trips as their primary focus. Although the business still offers tours, Hy-Line Cruises now operates a top-quality ferry service and has been voted the ‘number one boat line’ for the last twelve years by Nantucket’s local newspaper. From its humble beginnings, operating just one boat with three employees, Hy-Line Cruises is now staffed by over three hundred and fifty people, including a hundred year-round workers.

Free Wi-Fi is available on board their large, high-speed catamarans, so a comfortable and enjoyable journey is guaranteed every time. It’s also worth noting that, due to laws held by the local ferry authority, all of Hy-Line Cruise’s vessels are passenger only.

Hyannis… there’s no place like home! Hyannis has been our Hy-Line home since 1962 when we first started as a sightseeing boat operating Hyannis Harbor Tours, out past The Kennedy Compound in Hyannisport. Being in Hyannis feels like you’re in the spotlight on the Cape, so much is happening here!

Where is Hyannis?

Hyannis proves to be a great home-base while visiting Cape Cod, not only for our convenient ferry service to both islands, but also because it is centrally located to so many of the Cape’s best things to do. Located in the center of the “arm” of Cape Cod, Hyannis is the largest of the 7 villages of Barnstable. With beautiful beaches, outdoor recreation areas, an abundance of transportation options, plenty of national and local business, and great food, Hyannis is bustling!

Within 45 minutes, you can get just about anywhere on Cape Cod, whether that be the old-school historic feel of Falmouth and Sandwich, or the naturally breathtaking beauty of the upper cape and the National Seashore. You can also take our Nantucket Ferry or Martha’s Vineyard Ferry and get to either island in an hour! There is so much to see, and Hyannis is the perfect central location for your Cape Cod vacation.

What to do in Hyannis

Don’t think you have to leave town to have a great time! Hyannis boasts a classic main street with shops of all kinds, has live music almost every night during the summer, museums, family fun, a plethora of opportunities to get out on the water, amazing food and local events almost every week! With its picture-perfect Main Street, beautiful harbor, and attractions to please every age – think 2 breweries, 3 arcades, a potato chip factory, local artist shanties, 4 public beaches, live music venue, and a train – it’s no wonder why Hyannis is considered the hub of Cape Cod! Hyannis has so much to offer any visitor, of any age, whether staying for a while or just visiting for the day. Aren’t you tired just thinking about all the fun you could have? Check out our idea of a perfect day trip to Hyannis here !

My husband and I recently ventured to Nantucket for the day to enjoy its beauty. We climbed upon the early morning Hy-Line Fast Ferry to Nantucket and arrived from Hyannis Harbor in just about an hours ride. The Hy-Line Cruise to Nantucket comes highly recommended for many reasons...the friendly service, many amenities (breakfast bar in the morning and a bar outdoors on our ride home), the option of staying inside the ship in the air conditioning with TV's to watch to help pass the time or you can ride outdoors on the deck and enjoy the scenery. Although we didn't bring along any luggage, we saw the speed of the staff to unload the ship of its passenger's belongings, bike's and suitcases were lined up on the pier in a matter of minute's, quite impressive to watch! Overall a wonderful experience!

It was the best "experience" we had on our vacation - the hi speed ferry to Martha's Vineyard.... amazing sightseeing, fantastic hour...

Young Cape Cod students learn what it takes to be sea captains aboard Hy-Line Cruise ferry

The engines revved and the boat surged forward as seven students crowded at the windows squealing with delight and watching the scenery go by.

On the first Friday of every month, the students at the Cape Cod Christian Academy get together for an out of school “Fun Day” activity.

Last Friday, the activity was a tour of the Vineyard Lady, one of the boats operated by Hy-Line Cruises in Hyannis , so students could learn what it takes to become a sea captain.

And as a special treat, Captain Mike Lambias took the students out for a short cruise.

The “Fun Day” outings are designed to be a time to connect with members of the school community, something to do together, said Dr. Tracy L. Waters, founder and head of the school.

It is a way to provide the students with some hands-on experiential learning while also establishing and building partnerships with and among parents, Waters said.

Sometimes the “Fun Day” outing might be as simple as packing up picnic lunches and going to the park for a few hours.

At other times, the school has gone to museums, such as the Air and Space Museum, where students were able to see an actual flight simulator.

Students have also gone to Taylor Bray Farm , the Museum of Natural History in Brewster , the Cape Cod Museum of Art and Plimouth Patuxet Museums .

Often the outings are designed to address specific student interests.

For example, one student dreamed of becoming an airline pilot, so Waters' husband Buster Waters — also co-founder of the school — took several students to the Chatham airport to show them what it is like to fly a plane. Buster Waters contacted his friend, Murray Scudder, business manager at Hy-Line Cruises, to arrange this most recent trip.

During the tour, Lambias explained that the Vineyard Lady is a catamaran with two keels and two separate diesel-powered engines.

One of the students noted that the anchors are used to stabilize the boat, whereupon Lambias told of a time that he went out in sunny, calm weather that turned into a violent storm and that he needed the anchors just for that purpose.

In the pilot house, he explained that it took him about five years to become a boat captain and that he started out as a captain’s mate and then captained sight-seeing boats before piloting the Vineyard Lady to and from Martha’s Vineyard five times a day.

He also showed the students the instruments he uses to navigate the boat and pointed out the GPS system.

“It works just like in a car,” he said. “I set it to my destination and then just follow the route. It’s just like a car, but on water.”

He showed the students the radar system and two of the boys immediately started asking questions and were quickly able to identify other boats and places along the shore.

“You can see other boats. And if I see these trails I can tell if the boat is moving,” Lambias explained.

He showed them the emergency radio system and explained why that was important when going out to sea.

Finally, the part all the students were wondering about came when Lambias announced he was taking the Vineyard Lady out.

Two best friends Dominic Delosantos and Alex Thonus crammed together at one window and were fascinated by watching people walking along the beaches on shore.

Dominic said he liked it when the boat went fast, but he also liked it when it slowed down so he could see the sights.

Alex said he really liked being in the pilot house.

At one point another boat passed going the opposite direction.

All of the students, and their parents too, ran from one side of the boat to the other to get a look.

At another point everyone went to the stern of the boat and watched the wake of the waves that the two propellers made.

Quinn Cavicchi, like most of the students, said his favorite part of the trip was going fast.

Marcela Ramos agreed, but added that she liked learning about the GPS.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

hy line cruises hyannis schedule

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

hy line cruises hyannis schedule

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

hy line cruises hyannis schedule

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

hy line cruises hyannis schedule

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

hy line cruises hyannis schedule

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

hy line cruises hyannis schedule

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

hy line cruises hyannis schedule

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
