Following our check-out from the hotel, we gather on our bikes to embark on the 4,200 km Sturgis & Buffalo Bill Mountain Tour. As Denver fades into the background, we set out on a unique adventure brimming with history, excitement, and enjoyment. Initially, we navigate through city streets and interstate stretches before venturing onto designated back roads, surrounded by spectacular landscapes. We ease into the journey, ensuring everyone acclimates to traffic and driving conditions.

Our adventure truly begins on thrilling motorcycle roads, making a stop in Fairplay to explore the “ghost town” South Park City, now operating as a museum showcasing the old Wild West. After immersing ourselves in the Wild West influence, we continue to Gunnison, where we unwind, sharing experiences from the first leg of this enchanting journey.

Day 3: Gunnison - Durango

(Driving day 2: 372 km/231  miles)

Today marks the beginning of our journey on the finest back roads the USA has to offer. Departing from Gunnison, we navigate the captivating Silverthread Scenic Byway, winding through picturesque landscapes with curves that demand your camera’s attention. Prepare for a ride filled with visual wonders!

Our route takes us to Lake City, where we pause to soak in the relaxed atmosphere. Afterward, we continue to South Fork for a delightful lunch before pressing on to the awe-inspiring Wolf Creek Pass.

The day’s destination is Durango, an old mining town once flooded by treasure hunters seeking gold and silver worth hundreds of millions from the mineral-rich mountains. The prosperity brought by these noble metals has shielded Durango from economic downturns. Residents, unswayed by the typical stresses of modern life, exude hospitality and friendliness. Brace yourself for a charming evening in the historic district of this remarkable city.

Day 4: Durango - Moab

(Driving day 3: 355 km/220  miles)

Welcome to one of the tour’s pinnacle moments—today is a day brimming with extraordinary driving experiences on enchanting backroads, navigating sharp curves, relishing spectacular mountain scenery, encountering waterfalls, and exploring old Pioneer cities.

As we depart Durango, our first pause is at roadside hot springs, adding a touch of relaxation to our journey. Continuing north on breathtaking mountain roads, we reach Silverton, home to the world’s “highest” Harley Davidson dealer in terms of elevation. Following this, we embark on the renowned “Million Dollar Highway” (also known as the San Juan Skyway), ranked as the No. 4 among America’s best motorcycle roads. This drive is nothing short of extraordinary—a journey that becomes a lifelong memory. The road earns its famous name, “San Juan Skyway,” as we traverse mountain passes at an elevation of 3,353 meters (11,000 feet) above sea level, providing breathtaking views that seem to touch the skies. Several stops along the way allow us to fully absorb this unique experience. Upon reaching the road’s end in Ouray, known as the “Switzerland of America,” we enjoy lunch, attempting to digest the plethora of impressions.

Our fairy tale day continues on captivating backroads through the mountains, leading us toward Moab, situated at the entrance of the Arches National Park. As the sun sets, we immerse ourselves in the spectacular surroundings, capping off an unforgettable day.

Day 5: Moab - Park City

(Driving day 4: 370 km/230 miles)

After immersing ourselves in the wonders of Arches National Park, today’s journey will serve as a transitional drive en route to the incredible Wild West Run and Yellowstone National Park. Our route takes us northward towards Salt Lake City, ultimately concluding the day in the charming destination of Park City.

Day 6: Park City - Jackson

(Driving day 5: 470 km/292 miles)

Today’s journey takes us towards the enchanting Yellowstone National Park, embarking on the “Wild West Run.” We travel north, passing by the scenic Bear Lake, and make a stop at Montpelier to explore the historic site of Butch Cassidy’s bank robbery. Continuing our adventure, we reach Jackson, nestled in the picturesque Jackson Hole valley—a favored destination for affluent Californians. The evening is spent at the iconic Million Dollar Cowboy Bar.

Day 7: Jackson - Cody

(Driving day 6: 330 km/205 miles)

Get ready for another tour highlight! Today promises a long day filled with unique and rare experiences as we enter the stunning Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Park. Our journey starts on one of the US’s most popular motorcycle routes, the Wild West Run from Jackson to Yellowstone Lake. Passing through Moran and along Jackson Lake, we make our way to the iconic Old Faithful Geyser, known for its predictable eruptions every 35 to 120 minutes.

Continuing our ride through the spectacular Yellowstone, we venture onto Grand Loop Rd, with a stop at the breathtaking Artist Point. Prepare for close encounters with live buffalo herds, but exercise caution for the diverse wildlife that inhabits the park, including bears, wolves, elk, and buffalos. As we conclude the day, we ride into Buffalo Bill’s (William F. Cody) hometown, Cody, where we rest at Buffalo Bill’s motel and enjoy dinner at the historic Irma Hotel.

Day 8: Chief Joseph Scenic Byway & Beartooth Hwy

(Driving day 7: 264 km/164 miles)

Get ready for one of the tour highlights as we embark on the world-famous “Beartooth Highway,” ranked as the number one motorcycle route in the US. The Beartooth Highway has earned its iconic status among bikers worldwide for good reason, offering unique winding mountain roads with hairpin turns and spectacular views. This will also be the tour’s most demanding driving leg, so we’ll maintain a comfortable and safe pace to ensure everyone’s safety while providing ample time to enjoy the ride and scenery. Have your camera ready, as you’ll be riding on one of the world’s best motorcycle roads.

En route to Beartooth Pass, we’ll traverse the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway, adding another lifetime experience to our journey. After our return to Cody, you’ll have the opportunity to visit the spectacular Buffalo Bill’s Center of the West.

Day 9: Cody - Gillette

(Driving day 8: 396 km/246 miles)

Get ready for another exhilarating day of driving on spectacular, curvy, and fun mountain roads. Our route takes us into Big Horn Canyon and National Forest, offering breathtaking scenery that’s sure to keep a smile glued to your face. We’ll make a lunch stop and have the opportunity for some “cowboy shopping” in Sheridan. Continuing our journey, we’ll pass by the “Spotted Horse” bar on our way to Gillette. Enjoy the ride!

Day 10: Gillette - Sturgis

(Driving day 9: 242 km/151 miles)

Today, we embark on our thrilling adventures in the Black Hills, the legendary location of the Sturgis Bike Rally, the mother of all bike rallies. Get ready for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Our journey begins with a visit to the iconic Devil’s Tower, renowned for its appearance in the sci-fi movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Take in the spectacular rock formations and enjoy the surroundings. Next, we head to Sundance, the hometown of the Sundance Kid. Our route continues through the breathtaking Spearfish Canyon, a natural masterpiece that seems to be painted by the hands of nature.

As we drive through Deadwood, we make a stop at the historic No. 10 Saloon, where Wild Bill Hickok was famously shot while playing poker. (The combination of cards he held is now known as the “Deadman’s Hand.”) Deadwood, situated within an Indian reservation, holds full gambling rights. It’s also the place where the renowned sharpshooter Calamity Jane first met Wild Bill.

Day 11: Sturgis Bike Rally & Black Hills Run (optional)

(Driving day 10: 275 km/171 miles)

Today is dedicated to the famous and beloved Black Hills Run, where we’ll explore the incredible attractions around Sturgis and immerse ourselves in the world-renowned Sturgis Bike Rally.

Our journey begins with the exhilarating Black Hills Run, leading us to the colossal Crazy Horse monument, the world’s largest rock-carved monument. From there, we proceed to Custer and Custer State Park, an area that captured General George A. Custer’s admiration for its stunning beauty. Along the Wildlife Loop, we may encounter live buffalo. Lunch is enjoyed outdoors in Custer State Park, followed by a visit to the iconic Mt. Rushmore, featuring the heads of three U.S. presidents carved into the mountainside. The adventure continues with a drive on the famous Iron Mountain Road, promising a truly unique experience.

Having soaked in the beauty of the Black Hills, we make our way to Sturgis, a quaint town at the heart of the Sturgis Bike Rally, America’s oldest and legendary motorcycle rally. After parking our bikes, we venture to the world-famous Knuckle Saloon, setting the stage for a lively biker party!

Day 12: Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

(Fun and explorer day)

Enjoy Sturgis Motorcycle Rally! Use the day as you wish for the “Mother of all motorcycle rallies”.

Sturgis, with its modest population of 6,400, undergoes a remarkable transformation each August. What is typically a quiet “ghost town” becomes the vibrant epicenter for over 500,000 bikers hailing from more than 40 countries. Established in 1938, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has evolved into America’s oldest and most renowned biker rally, achieving legendary status among motorcycle enthusiasts worldwide. Throughout the entire week, Sturgis buzzes with action, camaraderie, and entertainment. Our accommodations are conveniently situated in the heart of the city center, allowing us to immerse ourselves fully in the rally’s festivities.

Day 13: Sturgis - Scottsbluff

(Driving day 11: 472 km/295 miles)

We bid farewell to Sturgis and begin our journey southward. Our first destination is the breathtaking Badlands National Park. Renowned for its rugged beauty, the Badlands feature striking geological formations and house one of the most significant fossil collections globally, including ancient mammals like rhinoceros, horses, and saber-toothed tigers. The park’s vast expanse encompasses mixed-grass prairies inhabited by bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and Blackfoot-ferrets.

During our scenic drive through the Badlands, we pause at “Wounded Knee,” the site of the tragic “Massacre at Wounded Knee,” where more than 150 Native Americans lost their lives and 50 were wounded by the US 7th Cavalry Regiment. Subsequently, we proceed to the small town of Alliance, where we’ll spend our final night on the road.

Day 14: Scottsbluff - Denver

(Driving day 12: 384 km/239 miles)

The conclusion of our thrilling adventure on the best backroads of the US and the Buffalo Bill Mountain Tour is upon us. Today marks our final leg of the journey. We travel southward through Sterling and Fort Morgan before returning to Denver.

Upon our arrival in Denver, we return the bikes, exchange our boots for more casual attire, and spend the afternoon near the hotel. We gather for a farewell dinner, cherishing the memories of our remarkable journey, and prepare for our journeys back home.

Day 15: Departure - Home Travel

Farewell to the majestic Rocky Mountains, the scenic US Best Back Roads, and the vibrant city of Denver. As we embark on our journey home, the group travels by shuttle to the airport. 20 riders for 20 days in 2024

When: Late July to early August

We are limiting this tour to a small group of just 20 riders. We've found this to be the magic number... small enough to ensure you get to know your group well and form some life long friends along the way, yet large enough to make a real impact while we ride!

Read on to see why this tour is one you don't want to miss…

Night one marks our welcome dinner and briefing/information night,  where you'll get the opportunity to relax and get to know your fellow riders who will be accompanying you on the tour.

After picking up the Harley-Davidson of your choice in Las Vegas, we’ll take a ride out to the very impressive Hoover Dam. After an hour there it’s off to the Hackberry Store on famous Route 66 to purchase some memorabilia to take back home to our friends. On our way back we’ll visit the Las Vegas Harley-Davidson Dealership to buy something special.

20 action packed days. America's greatest riding roads. The Sturgis Rally. Bonneville Speed Week, and much, much more.

On our first day out of Las Vegas, Nevada, we’ll be starting our adventure by visiting Virgin River Canyon (Arizona), Springdale (Utah), Zion National Park (my goodness this road is spectacular, the landscape is spectacular, it is simply put, spectacular), then on to Mt Carmel Junction and Bryce for our first night on the road.

Next morning there’s an optional ride up Bryce Canyon National Park, to Sunrise Point, for the early risers (you’ll be mad if you miss this). Upon our return we’ll pick up the ‘heavy sleepers’ and be on our way to the impressive Grand Canyon North Rim Visitors Centre. This view is world famous. Be sure to take plenty of photos to show your mates when you get back home. From here it gets even better… Jacob Lake, Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, Marble Canyon, Colorado River, Bitter Springs and on to Lake Powell in Arizona for our second night.

By day 3 on the road, we’ll be getting into the rhythm of things, and eager to see what the new day has to offer. Day 3 is what we've pegged as one of the best days of all. Monument Valley, plus the Indian Reservation Visitors Centre. What a landscape, with a history befitting its grandeur. You’ll likely want to stay in this amazing place longer than the day allows.

Dragging ourselves away, we’ll head to ‘Forrest Gump Point’ for yet another photo op, then on to Mexican Hat, Bluff, and Four Corners Monument where you can stand (with open arms and legs) in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona all at the same time. Next, Mesa Verde National Park awaits. Here we can split up for the rest of the day, so you can take your time in this historic location if you so choose to do it your way. Later at dinner in the one and only Durango, we’ll reminisce on our best day on the road so far.

In the morning we’re of to Taos, New Mexico and Pueblo, Colorado. American Indian locations that are very ‘artsy’ with handmade turquoise and silver jewellery, posters, hand made garments and all sorts of great stuff that you’ll no doubt be tempted to get hold of. A great day of riding through the landscape and the towns of Fort Garland, Walsenburg, Apache City and Colorado City. We’ll arrive in Pueblo ready for some pre-dinner drinks and settle in to a nice hearty meal at the end of the day.

Departing Pueblo in the early morning we’ll go through Colorado Springs, Castle Rock, Granby and Grand Lake for an 'interesting' lunch break. After lunch we’re off to Loveland (nice name, don’t you think?), then Cheyenne in Wyoming and our accommodation for the night. Everyday we’re getting closer to Sturgis… I promise.

Today we’ll visit Fort Laramie (Wyoming), an old fort from the ‘wild west’ days. We'll head through Lusk and arrive in Custer (we’re now in South Dakota) for lunch. Custer is a very popular town for us motorcycle riders, here the roads and the towns around the area will be filled with bikes. This will be just a small taste of what's to come in Sturgis. We’ll visit the H-D Dealership, then after lunch you might want to take some 'individual leave’ if you like. Or roll out early with the group so you can stay at our next 2 stops, Crazy Horse and Mount Rushmore National Memorial a little longer than others.

The ride into Rapid City won’t be difficult to find from here… just follow the many hundreds of bikes. We'll book in at the hotel and settle in to what will be your accommodation for the next 5 nights. Phew, I’m sure we’ll all be over packing our luggage each day by now.

The Sturgis Rally!

Now that we’re in Rapid City/Sturgis and it’s surrounds, this will be our playground for the next 4 days. There are so many local rides here that make it onto the US ‘Top 10 Best Rides’ list, you won’t know which ones to choose. So we’ve done it for you. Needles Highway, Vanocker Canyon Ride, Spearfish Canyon, Devils Tower... These are all morning rides that you can join if you so choose, so you can get to the Rally in Sturgis by lunchtime each day. We’ll visit the Badlands Harley-Davidson Dealership… you won’t believe how many bikes they sell in Sturgis week.

However, nothing is compulsory while in Sturgis, the idea is that you can come and go and ride wherever and whenever you like… day or night. What we at Steel Horse Moto will do over these days, is simply facilitate, ensuring you have the best possible time you can while at the Rally.

You can book events in Sturgis or play it by ear… you’ll soon work out where you’ve met the nicest people, the best places to celebrate and where you’re having the best time. Sturgis will live up to everything you’ve heard. Bikes, bikes and more bikes. Everywhere. Riders come in all shapes and sizes and with different levels of experience. Expect to see things you’ve never seen before… have your camera ready for that quick pic at all times.

After 4 full days of Sturgis you’ll be ‘rallied out’ and be happy to get back on the road, for a rest.

Our first day out of Sturgis/Rapid City is another good one. Cheyenne Crossing, Four Corners and arriving in Sundance for our morning break. After the break it’s the Devils Tower ride. This is one of the most popular rides in the Black Hills. You might recognise Devils Tower from the movie ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’. The ride itself is a great way to ease back into the saddle after 4 hectic days at Sturgis. From there we travel through Buffalo and Ten Sleep to Worland, our accommodation for the night.

We’re now on day 15 of our USA tour and boy have we done a lot so far. But hold your breath, it’s another great day ahead on the road for us. First we’ll visit Cody for our first break. Then another highlight… Yellowstone National Park. It'll be busy in the Park, so we'll stay for the better part of the day to ensure we get to see all that we want. Old Faithful Geyser is an obvious one. Heading out late, there will be a few miles yet to go today. Through Jackson Hole and on to our accommodation at Idaho Falls… hopefully before it gets dark.

Or drop us a quick note with any questions and we'll get back to you asap., get the full itinerary with route map and price, salt lake city and bonneville salt flats.

After yesterday’s long ride, today is just a short 278 miles into Salt Lake City. Here you can rest for the afternoon, or get out and about and discover this interesting city. 63% of the population are Mormons here, and the influence is everywhere. A fascinating place to see.

The next morning we wake to another interesting day. We’re off to the Bonneville Salt Flats to check out the cars and bikes and ‘rocket vehicles’ trying for a new land speed record. This place is truly amazing. The first time we ever went here, we thought it wasn’t for us. But were we wrong. It's amazing out there on the salt flats watching and chatting to the participants. A most interesting 4 hours will be spent here. Bring your sunnies whatever you do…it’s seriously bright! The next stop for the night is in Ely, 130 miles away… we have to get a little distance away from Bonneville to find any accommodation around these parts.

From Ely, on our last day on the bikes, it’s a simple ride through Crystal Springs for our morning break, then on to Coyote Springs before heading back into Las Vegas to return our ‘steel horses’ in the early afternoon. We can all rest easy now… we’ve done it. We travelled into 7 states (some more than once) and rode close to 3,875 miles, give or take a couple of hundred, depending on how much you rode around Sturgis. What a journey. You’ll remember this one and the new friends you've made so fondly, that you'll likely want to do it all again next year.

Some of us will be heading to the airport and back home today. Others might want to go on to Harley-Davidson HQ for a factory tour, or visit the H-D Museum in Milwaukee. Whatever your next move is, simply let us know and Steel Horse Moto will facilitate it for you.

We’ll start at an easy pace, allowing everyone to acclimate to the traffic and driving conditions as we ease into our adventure.

Our first stop takes us to Fairplay, where we’ll explore the charming “ghost town” of South Park City, now preserved as a museum showcasing the rugged spirit of the Old Wild West. After immersing ourselves in the frontier ambiance, we continue our journey to Gunnison, where a comfortable motel awaits, providing the perfect setting to unwind and share stories from the enchanting first leg of our fairytale adventure.

Our final destination for the day is Durango, a historic mining town steeped in tales of prosperity and fortune. Once a hub for treasure hunters seeking precious metals, Durango remains untouched by the ebb and flow of economic tides, exuding a timeless charm and warmth. Prepare for an evening of relaxation and exploration as we delve into the city’s historic district, where the echoes of its rich past resonate amidst welcoming streets and friendly faces.

Day 4: Durango - Moab

"The Greatest Trip of my life!"

Hello Wil and Erin. Just a short note to thank you for the ‘BEST VACATION EVER’. Both Brian and Andy were exceptionally professional and it is fair to say that that trip would not have been as good without the professional and friendly banter between the group and the guides. They were well able to cater for the differences in the group and this aided the holiday. The locations, lodgings and roads traveled matched and, sometimes, exceeded our expectations. On at least two occasions the accommodations were part of our dreams. ( Log cabin on a lake ) Read More

Unlike some of the other tour companies, WE DON'T CAMP. We stay in quality hotel accommodation all the way, including for our time at the Sturgis Bike Event. We choose to stay in Deadwood, an amazing and historic town that has over 900 buildings listed on the National Historic Register. This is by far the best location to stay when visiting Sturgis Bike Week. Deadwood is a short, and stunning, 13 mile ride from downtown Sturgis, and is not as crazy busy or noisy, yet it has plenty of bikes lining the main street, and is filled with fantastic restaurants, bars and casinos. It is a little elevated so the weather is cooler, and it is well located to take in all the "Sturgis" events that take place within a 50 mile radius, not to mention being closer to Mount Rushmore, and other amazing attractions, that we take in on our optional day rides while in the area.

Here’s why Tour de Staten Island bike event is important for this dedicated 48-year-old rider

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The 12th iteration of the Tour de Staten Island -- a bike event intended to showcase the borough while raising money for and awareness of the work Transportation Alternatives does to support safer streets -- is set for Sunday, with riders departing from Stapleton in the morning.

Justin Wood, 48, came to New York City in 1999. Since then, he’s gotten around primarily via bike, something he grew up doing during his childhood in rural Maine, he recalled. This year will be the second time Wood has participated in the tour since moving to the borough.

The self-described “relatively new” Staten Islander moved to St. George just about four years ago for what he said he hopes is his final move and permanent home.

If you ask Wood, he will say that cycling is his favorite thing in the world.

He said he appreciates it for practical reasons, for the exercise he gets, and also for the sense of meditation he feels behind the handlebars.

While he rides much of the Tour de Staten Island route in his daily life, he holds one stretch in particular regard. He explained that Freshkills Park, once the site of the landfill, is the highlight of the ride for him.

A DESTINATION FOR BIKING, HIKING AND MORE

“That just embodied everything about the Tour de Staten Island for me. It was people discovering this new place that had previously been off limits as an environmental hazard, and we were able to ride our bikes through these magnificent hills now covered in grasslands on this road,” said Wood. “I think as that park opens to the public, that’s a prime example. Staten Island could be a destination for mountain biking for hiking, for birding, for road biking.”

Wood said he sees magic on the day of the tour, but not because of the beautiful scenery. Bike riders are out in numbers, providing each other with a certain amount of safety they wouldn’t get if attempting the same ride on their own.

He said the park is not accessible, especially with public transit. In his view, there is no safe way for someone who doesn’t drive to get to a public resource like Freshkills.

Since moving to one of the most car-dependent parts of New York City, Wood said he has been able to use a combination of walking, cycling and public transit — mainly ferries — to get where he has to go.

To that end, he said he’s working to advocate for expanding fast ferry service to better connect Staten Island with the rest of the city.

“We’ve really seen the lack of interconnection between Staten Island and the other boroughs. The Staten Island Ferry is fantastic. It’s the largest ferry service by passenger volume in the United States. But it needs to be supplemented, this is just common sense,” Wood said. “I mean, Brooklyn is right there. You can practically swim from South Brooklyn to the North Shore of Staten Island, and we need an affordable and sustainable way to connect those boroughs, and a ferry connection makes all the sense.”

4,000 SIGNATURES

After the well-received launch of the NYC Ferry’s St. George route, Wood and Transportation Alternatives gathered 4,000 signatures to extend service to one of the South Brooklyn stops, like Bay Ridge.

Wood recalled the support of then-Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams at the time. And he said he is getting ready for a renewed push to remind Adams and the New York City Economic Development Corporation, which oversees the NYC Ferry, of the widespread popularity of ferry expansion.

Along with ferry service, Wood said he wants to see investments to make it easier for bikers and pedestrians to get around Staten Island. He explained he sees potential for community growth and safe, sustainable transportation as long as the infrastructure can keep up.

He added he hopes to see that happen through his work with Transportation Alternatives and the Tour de Staten Island.

“It’s a great chance for Staten Islanders to come out and enjoy our own borough, but of course it’s a huge opportunity for people from across the New York City metro area to come see how beautiful this place is,” said Wood. “So hopefully it’ll be a great day, and thousands of people will come enjoy it, and we’ll also be able to continue broadening the support for some better transportation infrastructure through events such as this.”

ABOUT THE EVENT

Open to riders of all ages, the Tour de Staten Island will offer both a 35- and 50-mile route.

Participants riding the 50-mile route on Sunday should check-in by 8 a.m, and 35-mile riders should check-in by 9 a.m. All riders will depart from URBY, in Stapleton. Those on the 50-mile route will head out at 8:30 a.m., and 35-mile riders will begin at 9:30 a.m.

After the riders are done, Transportation Alternatives is hosting a “finish festival,” offering food, drinks and activities at URBY from noon to 4 p.m.

There will be no road closures during the ride, but there will be markings and ride marshals along each route to guide cyclists.
