Iceland Day Tours: Explore the Wonders of Reykjavik and Beyond

Are you ready for an unforgettable adventure in Iceland? Look no further than our selection of Iceland day tours! From the famous Golden Circle to the breathtaking South Coast, we offer a range of guided tours that will take you to the most iconic sights and natural wonders in and around Reykjavik. With our state-of-the-art amenities, including in-bus audio guides and USB chargers, we ensure that your journey is not only informative but also convenient and comfortable.

The Golden Circle: A Journey Through Iceland's Natural Marvels

The Golden Circle is a must-visit destination for every traveler in Iceland. This 300-kilometer route takes you to three incredible attractions: the Geysir geothermal area, the Gullfoss waterfall, and the Þingvellir National Park.

Geysir Geothermal Area: Witness Nature's Fury

At the Geysir geothermal area, you'll have the opportunity to see the Strokkur hot spring in action. This impressive natural wonder erupts every few minutes, shooting boiling water high up into the air. The sight of this powerful display of nature's forces is truly awe-inspiring.

Gullfoss Waterfall: The Roaring Queen of Icelandic Waterfalls

Prepare to be amazed by the sheer power and beauty of the Gullfoss waterfall. As one of Iceland's most iconic landmarks, it cascades down in two stages, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Stand next to the edge of the waterfall and feel the mist on your face as you admire its majestic grandeur.

Þingvellir National Park: Where History and Nature Converge

Step into the footsteps of the Vikings as you explore Þingvellir National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is not only a place of historical significance but also a natural wonder. Marvel at the dramatic landscapes, walk through the Almannagjá fissure, and learn about the historic events that took place here.

The South Coast: A Scenic Journey of Black Beaches, Volcanoes, and Glaciers

If you're craving for more natural beauty, our South Coast day tours will take you on a breathtaking journey. From black sand beaches to towering volcanoes and rugged glaciers, this region is a paradise for nature lovers.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall: Walk Behind the Cascades

Prepare to get up close and personal with nature at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall. Unlike many other waterfalls, you can actually walk behind the cascades and experience the thundering water from a unique perspective. Don't forget to bring your raincoat, as you might get wet from the mist!

Skógar Waterfall: A Picture-Perfect Setting

Another majestic waterfall awaits you at Skógar. With its 60-meter drop and stunning surroundings, it's no wonder that this waterfall is a favorite among photographers. Capture the beauty of the cascades and the lush greenery that surrounds it.

Sólheimajökull Glacier: Step onto the Ice

For the ultimate adventure, strap on crampons and join our expert guides as you step onto the glacier ice of Sólheimajökull. Learn about the fascinating formations and features of glaciers while marveling at the icy landscapes. This is an experience like no other.

Iceland including the Blue Lagoon (Summer, 6 Days)

The Trafalgar tour of Iceland and the Blue Lagoon was great. This was our first organized tour and we were a little nervous what to expect. It was a smallish group (around 20 people) which made for a more personal trip, and also more room on the coach. The tour itinerary included a number of Icelandic cultural experiences that we would likely have missed if we had organized our own plans. These made for a much richer trip, and we were glad they were included. Kudos go to the tour guides when a day's schedule had to be reworked at an hour's notice due to 100mph wind gusts that made driving unsafe. The "plan-B" turned out to be a rewarding experience in its own right, bravo Xavier & Amy! The highlight of the trip was seeing the Northern Lights on a nighttime boat ride outside Rekjavik harbor. (this cannot be guaranteed, but we were lucky). A low light was the Blue Lagoon, which was rather run-down. We had independently been to Sky Lagoon before the trip started, and that was a much better experience.

What people love about Reykjavik Tours

Our time with Arctic Adventures was great. We learned a lot and saw such beautiful landscapes. There was some stress related to not knowing where we were going to stay prior to our departure… it wasn’t until we had landed in Reykjavik that we knew which hotel to go to. I wish airport transfers were included as it would have been less to worry about. All in all, it was a memorable trip.

Or stroll along and visit the shop and boutiques. You can even start your Reykjavik city tour itinerary here and save the Blue Lagoon for evening time.

Be on the lookout for street art as it is all over the city, and a great free way to learn about the culture. Next, head to the park and square to have a picnic or just watch people. You can visit the Reykjavik Cathedral or the Parliament as you spend a leisurely day exploring downtown Iceland on foot.

Visits start at $50, but we suggest splurging for the 7-step ritual! Start with the relaxing geothermal lagoon, followed by glacier cold pool, saunas, cold mist, scrub, steam, and end with a shower.

Now it is time to explore the National Park. We think one of the coolest things to do in Thingvellir National Park is to walk between the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasian that meet here! Snap a photo of yourself straddling the divide. Or for the adventurous traveler and scuba certified you can snorkel or scuba diving the Silfra Fissure .

Finally, visit the first waterfall on our Rekjavik itinerary! The Oxarafoss waterfall is really easy to get to from one of the car parks in the park. Best restaurants for your Reykjavik itinerary

There is no shortage of amazing places to eat in Reykjavik to eat. It is worth noting the capital city is more expensive than you will find once you explore the Ring Road or Golden Circle Route. We have curated a list of the best places for breakfast , and great restaurants you must try on your Reykjavik Itinerary.

Noodle Station

One of our favorites is Noodle Station! The restaurant (while not cheap) is on the inexpensive side as far as Iceland goes.

Noddle Station is frequented by locals and visitors alike who all seek out the delicious chicken, beef, or vegetable noodle soup. Mixed into the broth are secret ingredients that come straight from a family recipe passed down from the owner’s grandmother.

You can expect noodle soup full of delightful flavors, and you’ll wish the ingredients weren’t such a well-guarded secret. With solid portion sizes and quick service, Noodle Station is the perfect stop to thaw out and warm up before continuing to explore the stops on your Reykjavik itinerary.

Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur

You may think, why go to Iceland to eat hot dogs at an unassuming hot dog stand? The answer is that Bæjarins Betztu Pylsur serves uniquely Icelandic hot dogs and has become almost as much a tourist attraction as it is a destination for excellent Reykjavik street food. Plus, it is one of the most inexpensive places you will eat.

The little red stand has been serving up hot dogs near the Reykjavik harbor since 1937. Delighting many a local with its lamb hot dogs topped with fried onions, raw onions, ketchup, Icelandic sweet mustard, and remoulade.

Visit the one at Tryggvagata 1 in downtown Reykjavik.

Sea Baron (or Sægreifinn) is located on Reykjavik’s harbor. If you’re looking for fresh, Icelandic seafood done right, this is one of the best places to eat!

Known for their famous, mouthwatering lobster soup, Sea Baron also offers delicious fish skewers featuring all kinds of fresh fish grilled on a spear. The bonus is the delicious restaurant won’t break the bank!

Pair your meal with a beer or a free cup of coffee and you’ll have all the fuel you need to keep exploring this beautiful country.

Reykjavik Fish

The best fish and chips in Reykjavik is served at Reykjavik Fish. After a busy first day of exploring, the large portions of delicious battered cod paired with one of five different sauces will hit the spot. Cod is the only option for the fish and chips, but it’s unbelievably fresh and distinctly Icelandic!

Also served are other traditional Icelandic dishes such as arctic char, Icelandic plokkari (gratinated fish and potatoes), and fish soup. Finish your meal with a taste of one of the local beers in Iceland.

All About the City of Reykjavik

Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland and the northernmost capital in the world. It’s a lively city full of museums and restaurants and nurtures innovative art and music scenes. What Reykjavik lacks in a population (just over 120,000 people) it more than makes up for in personality and charm. This is your complete guide to Reykjavik.

Where is Reykjavik?

Reykjavík is located on Faxafói Bay in southwest Iceland. The city was settled in 874 AD by Ingólfur Arnarson and his family. Reykjavík, or smoky bay in Icelandic, is so named for the “smoke” or steam the first settlers saw rising from the many geothermal springs in the area.

How do you say Reykjavík?

While it can seem like a mouthful to the non-Scandinavian language speaker, it’s easy enough once you know some basic rules of Icelandic. “Ey” is pronounced like the long “a” in rake. The letter “j” has yuh sound, and “í” is said like “ee” in English. Put all that together, and you get rake-yuh-veek. Reykjavík.

When to Visit Reykjavik

All-year-round. Iceland doesn’t have very drastic seasonal changes, but daylight hours do vary in the extreme depending on the time of year. At the height of mid-winter, Iceland only gets about 4 hours of daylight while in midsummer, it is bathed in 24 hours of daylight (depending on cloud cover). Although it never gets really hot in the summer, it can get relatively warm. Temperatures average 13.3ºC (55.9ºF) in July and −3.0ºC (26.6ºF) in January. Icelandic weather is notoriously unpredictable, so it is possible to experience these extremes at any time of year.

What to Do in Reykjavik

Walk on down to Reykjavík's City Hall and buy a City Card . This card gets you free access or a discount, to many museums and restaurants and free admission to Reykjavík's swimming pools and on city buses.

With this card in hand, you can: Visit the dozens of museums , go for a swim in one of the local pools, and eat and drink at the local restaurants and bars. It’s also lovely to walk around downtown Reykjavik and visit with the local cats, pop into a bookstore, café, or one of the many small art galleries located around the city.

Where to Visit

Perlan - Gives visitors a bird’s eye view of the city with its 360º observation deck, a museum that features exhibitions of Iceland’s natural wonders, including an ice cave and a northern lights planetarium show.

Harpa - Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre is an ode to the Icelandic landscape on the harbor, mimicking the shape of columnar basalt and the colors of the northern lights. This venue is also home to the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and The Icelandic Opera.

Höfði - Visit this historic site that played host to the 1986 summit between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev.

Hallgrímskirkja - This iconic church on a hill is hard to miss. Head to the top of the tower for an amazing view of downtown.

Old Harbour - With views of the harbor and Mount Esja, this area is home to a number of shops, cafés, museums, and bike rental shops, and is the base for whale and puffin watching tours.

Reykjavik-harbor-harpa

What to Wear

Layers. Rule number one for dressing in Iceland is to wear layers and always be ready for rain. In Reykjavik, you can experience all the seasons in one day. A good rule of thumb is always to wear three layers— whatever it is you want to wear plus:

●    Sweater/Jumper

●    Water-resistant outer layer

Those more susceptible to cold may want to add wool leggings and a thermal undershirt in the winter. Warm socks, fairly water-resistant shoes (or hiking boots for outdoor activities), gloves, and a hat are also a must even in summer.

Why does the hot water smell?

Reykjavik’s hot water comes from both deep boreholes, which naturally contain varying concentrations of sulfur (the first source of the smell), and geothermal plants. To remove oxygen from the water, a small amount of hydrogen sulfide (the second source of the smell) is added. Removing oxygen from the water helps prevent corrosion of the city’s water pipes.

The best-known is Reynisfjara , which TripAdvisor and National Geographic both name as one of the best beaches in the world! You’ll see this beautiful beach on our South Coast and Ring Road tours. If you pick our Westfjords tours, you’ll also see white, golden, and even red sand beaches!

Lava Formations

Explore Iceland’s astonishing lava formations on our tours

On our tours of Iceland, you’ll see an ever-changing country packed with breathtaking geological marvels, including beautiful basalt columns, jagged pinnacles, and jet-black lava flows. Home to some of the fiercest volcanoes ever known, more than a third of the world’s recorded lava since the Middle Ages has poured across Iceland! On our Ring Road and South Coast tours , you’ll see how lava has shaped the country into what it is today, where more than 30 active volcano systems have created astonishing sights like Stuðlagil Canyon , the Eldhraun lava field, and the black sand beach at Reynisfjara .

See the “Arch with a Hole” summer home to Puffins

Offering some of the best views on the South Coast, Dyrhólaey (Door Hill Island) is a spectacular promontory rising more than a hundred meters high above the Atlantic. Close to the most southerly point in Iceland, fierce waves pound the shores below. You’ll enjoy phenomenal panoramic views of towering stone arches, gleaming glaciers, brooding volcanoes, and Iceland’s famous black sand beach, Reynisfjara . If you look closely, you’ll see the Reynisdrangar too!  In the summer, thousands of puffins and other seabirds flock here, so it’s an excellent spot for bird watching!

Blue Lagoon

Take a dip at Iceland’s famous Geothermal SPA

Experience a spa day like no other with a trip to Iceland’s iconic Blue Lagoon . This geothermal paradise guarantees relaxation and rejuvenation after a day of exploring. Some of our Golden Circle & Ring Road tours include an option to visit here, where you can lie back in the warming waters, admire the astonishing views of the jet-black lava fields, exfoliate, and enjoy a drink at the swim-up bar. Close to the airport and the city, the Blue Lagoon is the perfect place to sample the best of Iceland’s famous hot pots, where the mineral-rich healing waters will send you to heaven!

Whale Watching

Enjoy an unforgettable whale watching tour in Iceland!

With more than twenty types of whales visiting Iceland every year, it’s one of the best places in the world to take a whale watching tour. When we visit Akureyri in North Iceland on our Ring Road tours , get ready to spot humpbacks, minke whales, orcas, dolphins, and porpoise s . If you’re lucky, you might see a Blue whale, the most enormous creature ever known! Whales and other cetaceans come to Iceland to feed in the nutrient-rich waters, and some stay all year round now. Imagine the joy of seeing whales and dolphins in the wild – you can do that when you visit Iceland!

Explore the land of ten thousand waterfalls on our tours!

Iceland is covered by glaciers and snow-capped mountains, so that means there’s a lot of crystal-clear meltwater tumbling over cliffs and rushing to the sea. Some say there are over 10,000 waterfalls in Iceland, and you’ll see some of the most famous falls on our Golden Circle , South Coast , and Ring Road tours . There are hidden waterfalls, multi-tiered falls, widescreen cascades where rainbows dance on sunny days, and even waterfalls where you can walk behind the waters! We’ll show you some of the best fosses in Iceland – and they’re all easy to reach too!

Volcanic Craters

See Iceland’s spectacular volcanic craters on our tours!

Iceland is less than 20 million years old, created by underwater volcanoes rising up along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge with a pipeline of molten magma straight from the Earth’s burning core. Dozens of volcanoes dot the country, and many are still active, which means you can explore fascinating volcanic formations at different geological stages! On our Golden Circle tours, you’ll see the multicolored crater at Kerið. Grábrok Craters are included in itineraries for our Westfjords Tours . There are countless more craters to be seen on our Ring Road and Silver Circle tours!

Seal Watching

Go seal spotting while you’re on tour in Iceland!

Iceland is a haven for several seal species, with little colonies of these captivating creatures dotted around the country. On our South Coast & Glacier Lagoon and Ring Road tours , you’ll have a chance to spot them at Jökulsárlón, where seals are often seen basking on the floating icebergs. Iceland’s coastline features golden sandy beaches where Harbor and Gray seals make their home, including Ytri-Tunga , a stop on our  Snaefellsnes tour in West Iceland.

Notably the highest chances to see them is when taking one of Westfjords Tours . It’s your best chance to see these gorgeous creatures in their natural habitat!

River Rafting

Take a ride on a thrilling river rafting tour experience!

Iceland’s fast-flowing glacial rivers offer you a fantastic adventure experience when you join one of our adrenaline-pumping river rafting tours. Jump on sturdy rafts not far from Gullfoss waterfall on the Golden Circle , and paddle through the twisting turns of the Brúarhlöð volcanic rock canyon on the White River! Soak up the stunning scenery as you float downstream, safe in the hands of expert guides, with all the equipment you’ll need provided. It’s one of the most exciting adventure activities you can take in Iceland!

Northern Lights

Want to see the Northern Lights? Then book an Multi-Day Tour during winter time!

Seeing a display of the magical Northern Lights is an unforgettable experience, and Iceland is one of the most beautiful places in the world to witness this colorful cosmic spectacle. Clear, dark skies are needed to see the Northern Lights at their best, far away from streetlights. So when you book a winter multi-day tour , you’ll have the best chance to see the Northern Lights when you stay overnight in the remote Icelandic countryside. The darker the nights get, the brighter the lights can be seen. Choose one of our winter tours for an experience you’ll never forget!

Explore Iceland’s unique ice caves on our exciting tours!

More than a tenth of Iceland is covered by glaciers, making it the perfect place to get a close look at these astonishing frozen wonders. On our South Coast tours , you can opt for an unforgettable Ice Cave experience at Vatnajökull . Iceland’s glaciers are constantly changing, so your ice cave trip will be unique – nobody else will see the same sight again! Strap on some crampons and discover fascinating ice formations, including stalagmites, stalactites, and spectacular blue ice caves, safe in the hands of our experienced glacier guides. Tours operate between late October to April.

Lava Caving

Iceland is a hotbed of volcanic activity formed by superheated lava and molten rock from countless eruptions over millions of years. When the lava stops flowing, the top crust cools more quickly, leaving hollow caves and tunnels behind. You can explore these incredible underground spaces when our Silver Circle tours visit The Cave at Víðgelmir in West Iceland. Enjoy a 90-minute expedition on well-lit walkways with expert guides and learn about stalagmites and stalactites in colorful caverns. Viking outlaws used these places as hideouts – now you can explore here too!

Golden Circle

See Iceland’s most famous sights

Tour the Golden Circle to see the glittering jewels in Iceland’s crown. In one convenient day trip from the capital, you’ll see the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, the geothermal wonders of Geysir , and the spectacular rift valley at Þingvellir National Park . The Golden Circle offers you the best of Iceland’s natural beauty and history, where you can walk in Viking footsteps between two continents! Stand back as a geyser erupts at Haukadalur Geothermal Area every few minutes and admire the view at Gullfoss, a tremendous two-tiered waterfall fed by glacial meltwater.

Hot Spring Bathing

Take a dip in Iceland’s famous geothermal spas on our tours

Enjoying a dip in a geothermal hot spring spa or pool is a daily ritual for Icelanders, like going to a coffee shop or a bar. There are dozens of natural hot spring spas, swimming pools, and outdoor hot pots all over the country, waiting for you to jump in and relax! Our Golden Circle tours include options to visit the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon near Reykjavík, while our Silver Circle tours include an authentic stone-walled hot pot in a remote canyon! Our Ring Road tours also feature several geothermal swimming pools around the country, where the locals love to relax too.

Take our tours of Iceland to admire its gorgeous glaciers

Close to the Arctic Circle and just 300 miles wide, Iceland is the perfect place to explore glaciers and ice caps. These frozen blue wonders can be seen easily as you explore Iceland on our Ring Road tours . That’s because outlet glaciers and glacier tongues reach down from  Sólheimajökull on the South Coast and from Vatnajökull in the East right down to the coast, making it easy to get up close to these majestic sights. Centuries of snow and ice have created these incredible glaciers, but they are retreating now due to climate change. Don’t miss your chance to see these marvels while you can!

Glacier Hike

Experience an adventure like no other on a Glacier Hike tour

Did you know that a tenth of Iceland is covered in glaciers and that 269 of them have been named? Iceland is the ideal place to come if you want to explore these natural wonders at close quarters. That’s because our South Coast tours visit Sólheimajökull in South Iceland, where you can strap on crampons and take an unforgettable stroll across this ever-changing environment. Gaze at incredible ice formations, crossing crevasses, and exploring ice caves, all in the hands of knowledgeable expert guides. Note : Our Glacier Hike tours operate between April and October.

Iceland is a country filled with incredible water features, including hot springs, waterfalls, and glacial rivers. But did you know that the word “geyser” comes from here? On our Golden Circle tours , you’ll see the “OG” of geysers everywhere at the Haukadalur Geothermal area. While Geysir has fallen silent recently, nearby Strokkur erupts in steam explosions and spray every few minutes, sending superheated water flying high into the sky. Geysir means “gush” in Icelandic, and that’s where the name comes from! If you book a package with stay in Hveragerði you can also admire smaller cousin of Strokkur that erupts every 15-20 minutes.

Geothermal Areas

Discover Iceland’s active geothermal areas on our tours

Iceland’s fiery volcanic origins mean it’s a hothouse of geothermal activity with several colorful geothermal areas you can explore on our tours. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous, close to the airport, and you can visit the Haukadalur Geothermal Area on our Golden Circle tours . On our Silver Circle tours , you can see the most powerful hot spring in Europe at Deildartunguhver . And if you choose one of our Ring Road tours , you’ll see the almost alien landscapes at Hverir , where fumaroles fizz and hot pools bubble and boil! Feel the ground tremble and smell the sulfur!

Iceland is a “country in the making” formed by volcanoes and earthquakes and sculpted by gigantic glaciers.

That offers you a variety of breathtaking and unique landscapes, such as Stuðlagil and Fjaðrárgljúfur , two of the most stunning places in Iceland! At Stuðlagil, you’ll see twisting basalt columns line a gorgeous glacial river canyon, a magnificent location that has only recently been discovered. Fjaðrárgljúfur (Feather River Canyon) is a surreal sight – a marvelous sheer-walled river canyon covered in blankets of velvet-green moss.

Our tours will take you straight to the most spectacular sights in Iceland, but there are ways of getting even closer if you want to! At the Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón), you can jump into an amphibious vehicle for an unforgettable tour around the lagoon, sailing amongst the glittering giants.

Imagine the thrill of seeing these gigantic chunks of multi-coloured ice from just a few feet away! Where else will you get a chance to cruise between towering icebergs as they sway around the spectacular lagoon? Don’t miss this magical experience! Note: Boat tours are available from May to October.

Bird Watching

Everyone wants to see Iceland’s famous puffins when they visit in the summer months (late May until mid-August) . Iceland is also home to countless more species of birds, some of which stay all year round.

On our South Coast and Ring Road tours, you’ll also have a chance to see Arctic terns, kittiwakes, guillemots, and razorbills. Lake Mývatn in North Iceland attracts thousands of ducks each summer, making it a bird watcher’s paradise! Look out for the Barrow’s Goldeneye, Harlequin ducks, gyrfalcons, gannets, and ptarmigans! Our Westfjords and Snæfellsnes tours also include visits to bird-filled cliffs along the route.

Visit the “original” Geyser on our Golden Circle tours

Iceland’s fierce volcanic activity fuels gushing geysers all around the country, and the most famous hot spring is Geysir , one of the highlights of our Golden Circle tours . Geysir was the first erupting hot spring discovered by Europeans, and its name is the Icelandic word for “gush”, giving its name to all hot springs worldwide. Geysir is quiet these days, but Strokkur sends hot water and vapor high into the sky every few minutes! You won’t have to wait long to see it blow sky-high. So get your camera ready – this will be one of the best photo opportunities you’ll have in Iceland!

Gullfoss Waterfall

Discover the glorious Gullfoss on our Golden Circle tours

One of the highlights of the famous Golden Circle route , Gullfoss is a thundering two-tier waterfall fueled by Langjökull , the “Long Glacier”, which you’ll see far inland if it’s a clear day. Tumbling more than thirty meters into a dramatic rock canyon, Gullfoss is one of the most thrilling waterfalls in the country, and you can see the falls from several viewing platforms. Watch out for rainbows on sunny days, and wear waterproofs – millions of gallons of water crashing over the cascade creates lots of spray!

Traditional Architecture

See the famous turf-roofed buildings!

Traditional Icelandic architecture is characterized by its simplicity, functionality, and integration with the natural environment. During our tours you will be able to see couple of its examples.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the North

Akureyri is the unofficial “second city” of Iceland, located in the far north about six hours from Reykjavik, nestling at the end of the longest fjord in the country.

Sólheimajökull Glacier & Lagoon

See the slowly disappearing glacier and a glacial lake forming in front!

Sólheimajökull is a magnificent glacier located on the South Coast of Iceland. It is an outlet glacier that descends from the larger Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. Sólheimajökull is famous for its breathtaking ice formations, including deep crevasses, ice caves, and dramatic ice ridges.

The glacial environment of Sólheimajökull provides a unique opportunity to witness the effects of climate change, as the glacier has been receding in recent years. This caused new Glacial Lagoon to appear on the map of Iceland, where huge chunks of ice slowly float on its surface.

Húsafell Canyon Baths

Bathe like Icelanders did in the old days!

This place offers a unique and natural relaxation experience, nestled within a stunning canyon surrounded by lush greenery. This is a spellbinding place that has to be seen to be believed, with three geothermally-heated pools of varying temperatures (30-41°C or 86-105°F), a cold-water pot and a cooling waterfall, all designed to blend seamlessly into the natural environment.

These are traditional and authentic Icelandic bathing pools , inspired by the age-old ways used by the locals in this area for a thousand years. Sustainably built in the traditional stone-bath style in an off-grid location, it’s a unique combination.

Rauðisandur Red Beach

Find yourself on the Westernmost Beach in Europe!

Rauðisandur is a stunning golden sandy beach located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Its name translates to “Red Sand,” but the beach is actually a unique blend of golden, beige, and reddish hues . The vast expanse of Rauðisandur stretches for nearly 10 kilometers and is backed by stunning cliffs and mountains. The beach is known for its tranquil beauty and peaceful atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for solitude and relaxation.

Bolafjall Sky Walk

Take a walk on top of one of the most beautiful summits in Iceland!

Bolafjall is a prominent mountain located in the Westfjords region of Iceland. Rising up to an elevation of 638 meters , it offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding fjords and coastal landscape.

In the recent year, on the summit of Bolafjall impressing viewing platform with sky walk was constructed, just right next to old American radar station. It allows you to witness the beauty of the rugged terrain and the vast ocean beyond. The road leading to the top is very steep and narrow, but no worries! You will be taken there by our experienced drivers.

See the most powerful waterfall in the whole of Europe!

Dettifoss is a mighty and powerful waterfall located in Northeast Iceland. It is known for being the most powerful waterfall in Europe , with a massive volume of water cascading over its rocky edge.

The sheer force and thundering sound of Dettifoss are awe-inspiring, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for visitors. The waterfall is situated in the Vatnajökull National Park, surrounded by rugged landscapes and dramatic cliffs.

Discover the hidden gem of the South Coast with us!

Gljúfrabúi is a hidden gem located in Iceland, near the popular tourist attraction, Seljalandsfoss waterfall.

It is often referred to as the “Secret Waterfall” or “Cave Watefall” due to its concealed location and the fact, that is very often missed by many !

Diamond Beach

Take a walk among the “Diamonds”!

The beach gets its name from the sparkling icebergs that wash up on the black sand , resembling diamonds on the shore. The contrast between the glistening ice and the dark volcanic sand creates a breathtaking sight. Diamond Beach is a photographer’s paradise, offering stunning opportunities to capture the beauty of nature.

Walk on a lava arch and see many stunning sights!

Arnastapi is a small village located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. The village offers a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers. One of the main attractions in Arnarstapi is the famous Gatklettur, a natural arch rock formation that stands tall against the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. There, you can also take a walk on the Lava Bridge and pose for a unique picture.

Enjoy an evening and overnight stay in the capital of the West

Borgarnes bubbles with life, packed into a picturesque promontory overlooking the broad waters of Borgarfjörður, the “City Fjord”.

Enjoy an afternoon and overnight stay in the charming, geothermal village

Hveragerði catches your attention with steam vents billowing vapor into the air everywhere you look. You’ll be amazed by the endless rows of geothermally-heated greenhouses, where bananas and other fruits are grown all year round!

Hraunfossar Lava Waterfalls

See a unique waterfall when you book a Silver Circle tour

Iceland is filled with unique sights, and one of the most mesmerizing is the “Lava Waterfalls” at Hraunfossar . Part of the Silver Circle tour route, glacial meltwater gently cascades down a series of steps from the middle of moss-covered lava cliffs, with the falls stretching for hundreds of meters. The waters seep through the Hallmundarhraun lava field until reaching the White River before tumbling gracefully below. You can enjoy the Lava Waterfall from different perspectives at several viewing platforms. It’s an extraordinary sight!

Explore Iceland’s wildest region

If you want to see Iceland at its wildest, the Westfjords await you! Lonely Planet picked the Westfjords as its No.1 place to go – here’s your chance to see it!

Vik í Myrdal

Charming, southernmost village in Iceland

The picturesque village of Vik í Myrdal is perfect for a photo stop on our South Coast and Ring Road tours. Atlantic waves roll in with full force at the most southerly point on Iceland’s mainland, pounding the black sand beaches. Vík is the warmest coastal town in the country, and the summer air is filled with migrating birds. Walk its pretty streets and admire the gorgeous hilltop church atop the town’s highest point! Enjoy another view of the Reynisdrangar from there!

Þingvellir National Park

Where two continents split apart

A place of outstanding natural beauty, Þingvellir National Park offers you a unique opportunity to walk in Viking footsteps between two continents. The tectonic plates of North America and Europe are pulling apart along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge here, increasing Iceland’s size every day! The early Viking settlers held their parliaments (the Alþingi) here for a thousand years, and Iceland declared its independence from this stunning location in 1944, so this is a sacred place for all Icelanders! It’s now a UNESCO World Heritage Site , making it a must-see stop on our Golden Circle tours .

South Coast

See the best of Iceland’s stunning South Coast

Explore the treasures of the South Coast on our tours, discovering stunning landscapes lined with thundering waterfalls, immense glaciers, towering volcanoes, and dramatic black sand beaches! Easily reached from the city, the South Coast is an unforgettable dreamland of astonishing natural wonders. Hike across a glacier at Sólheimajökull , or maybe discover a hidden waterfall? Walk on an endless black sand beach at Reynisfjara or enjoy a thrilling walk behind a waterfall at Seljalandsfoss ? These are just some of the magical experiences you can enjoy on a tour of the sensational South Coast!

Snæfellsnes

See the “Iceland in Miniature”

Close to the capital and easily reached, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is an ideal tour to discover all of Iceland’s best features in just one day! The “Snow Mountain Peninsula” is often called “ Iceland in Miniature ” because you can find photogenic mountains (including Kirkjufell ), beautiful beaches, plunging waterfalls, seal colonies, ancient lava fields, and a towering stratovolcano in one place! Some say the peninsula has mystical qualities as one of the planet’s many “chakra” centers. It also inspired Jules Verne when he wrote “ Journey to the Center of the Earth ”!

Soothe yourself after a day on tour with a dip at Sky Lagoon

One of Iceland’s newest and most impressive geothermal spa experiences, Sky Lagoon offers you a memorable experience with astonishing views of the Atlantic. Relax in the perfectly regulated waters surrounded by volcanic rocks and a turf-roofed visitor center. Enjoy the 75-meter infinity pool, and order a drink at the swim-up bar! You can opt for an authentic Icelandic bathing experience with the Seven-Step Ritual , including saunas, cold mist showers, and exfoliating scrubs. It’s one of the most spectacular geothermal spa experiences in the world!

Seljalandsfoss

Take a walk behind a waterfall on our South Coast tours

Seljalandsfoss is a graceful waterfall that tumbles over 60 meters from Eyjafjallajökull , a volcano on Iceland’s stunning South Coast . It has a special feature that makes it even more exciting – there’s a path you can take all the way around the cascade! It can be slippery, but the views are unforgettable if you don’t mind getting wet! The chute is fueled by glacial meltwater from the volcano that stopped air traffic in 2010, putting Iceland on the map! A “secret” waterfall called Gljúfrabúi is nearby, hidden in a little green rock canyon – we’ll show you where to find it!

Reynisfjara Black Beach

See one of the most famous beaches in the world

If National Geographic and TripAdvisor both say Reynisfjara is one of the best beaches in the world, then you have to add it to your list of “must-see” places to visit when you’re in Iceland. With miles of jet-black volcanic sands stretching into the distance and fierce Atlantic waves pounding the shoreline, it’s one of the most dramatic coastlines you’ll ever see! Lined with beautiful basalt columns, the Reynisdrangar completes the cinematic scene, towering sea stacks looming offshore! Some say these were trolls trying to catch a ship, frozen in time when the sun rose!

Jökulsárlon Glacier Lagoon

Explore Iceland’s spectacular Glacier Lagoon on our tours

Where else can you get up close to immense icebergs in a glacial meltwater lagoon? On our South Coast Multi-Day and Ring Road tours , you can visit the astonishing Glacier Lagoon at Jökulsárlón , where you’ll see gigantic icebergs floating serenely around a spectacular lake, which only formed about 80 years ago. As the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier retreats, giant pieces break off the edge and sail out to sea. The Glacier Lagoon is the “waiting room” on the journey! Come and see these multicolored icy marvels for yourself at this bucket-list location, and look out for seals basking on the bergs too!

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Walk into the cave hidden behind the falls!

Hveragerði has several fine restaurants and cafés, and some offer unique dishes that use the underground heat! For example, Ölverk Pizza & Brewery specialize in wood-fired pizzas while using geothermal heat to brew their high-quality craft ales. You can also have a snack inside the greenhouse at Rósa Kaffi . Nearby, The Greenhouse Hotel is also home to a food hall with several options, including tacos, burgers, fried chicken and Asian cuisine. More options are available here, so you’re guaranteed a great meal, whatever you’re in the mood for.

The Golden Circle Day Trip from Reykjavik is a quintessential Icelandic excursion, offering an unforgettable journey through some of Iceland’s most spectacular landscapes.

This popular day trip covers three of Iceland’s most iconic natural landmarks: Thingvellir National Park (Þingvellir National Park), the Geysir Geothermal Area, and Gullfoss Waterfall, each site boasting its unique geological and historical importance.

Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site , is not only a place of stunning natural beauty but also a cornerstone of Icelandic history, being the original site of the world’s oldest parliament established in 930 AD.

The park is situated in a rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, offering a remarkable display of geological wonders.

The Geysir Geothermal Area is next, where visitors witness the awe-inspiring Strokkur geyser, which erupts every few minutes, shooting water up to 30 meters into the air.

This geothermal wonderland is a vivid demonstration of the Earth’s natural power.

Lastly, the tour visits Gullfoss, or the ‘Golden Waterfall’, an iconic waterfall that plunges into a deep gorge, creating a spectacular sight, especially on sunny days when rainbows often appear in the mist.

Golden Circle Tours typically last about 7 to 9 hours, making them an ideal full day trip from Reykjavik. These tours are available year-round, providing different but equally stunning experiences in each season.

One of the absolute coolest day trips to try in Iceland is snorkelling in between tectonic places! Silfra Fissure in Thingvellir National Park is a geological wonder that mesmerizes visitors with its crystalline waters and otherworldly beauty.

Carved by the shifting tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia, this underwater chasm offers a unique opportunity for snorkelers and divers to traverse the gap between continents.

Its exceptionally clear, glacial-fed waters provide visibility of up to 100 meters, unveiling a unique underwater landscape with intricate rock formations.

Day tours to Silfra Fissure depart from Reykjavik so you can explore this underwater world with an experienced adventure guide.

Snorkelling between tectonic plates at Silfra Fissure is another one of those adventures that should not be attempted on your own without a guided tour! You need the right gear and the knowledge of a local to ensure you stay safe.

On this Silfra Fissure snorkelling tour , you are provided with hefty dry suits, snorkel gear, and a PADI-certified dive guide so you can stay dry and warm while you swim in glacial waters. This small-group activity is one of the best day trips from Reykjavik for adventurers!

Another one of the best day trips around Reykjavik is horseback riding through the lava fields of Hafnarfjörður. If you’re looking for a fun adventure that’s a bit tamer than hiking a glacier or snorkeling between tectonic plates, a leisurely horse ride around the idyllic landscapes of Iceland is a great tour to choose.

This tour with Íshestar Stables provides visitors with an authentic Icelandic horse riding experience through the dramatic lava fields and beautiful green hillsides.

The tour guides provide warm overalls, rain gear, riding boots, and helmets that will keep you safe and dry as you explore the outdoors by horseback.

This is one of the best ways to connect with nature, escape the city, and marvel at the pristine natural beauty around Iceland. And it’s right outside Reykjavik, making it one of the easiest and closest day trips to town!

  • Distance from Reykjavik: Locations vary
  • Driving time: Most northern lights tours are around 3-4 hours

When venturing anywhere in the Earth’s far north, seeing the northern lights is a must (also called Aurora Borealis). Admiring the mystical northern lights is a bucket-list experience for many, and Iceland is one of the best places to watch this marvelous natural phenomenon.

You might not see the northern lights in Reykjavik, as there is a good amount of light pollution from the city. To see the northern lights while visiting Reykjavik, your best bet is to book guided day trips out into the remote wilderness of Iceland.

You can always look for the northern lights on your own if you have a rental car, but going with a local guide gives you a much better chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

The locals always know the best places to go at the right times, so it’s worth booking group tours for a once-in-a-lifetime experience like this.

Some of the top-rated Northern Lights tours are with Northern Lights Bus , Gray Line Iceland , or Rvk Sightseeing . The best chance of seeing the northern lights on your tour is during winter, and most tours offer a free return tour if you don’t see anything. Because we can never truly predict Mother Nature!

  • Distance from Reykjavik: 308km
  • Driving time: 5 hours

Landmannalaugar, nestled in the heart of Iceland’s Highlands, is a geological marvel and a haven for outdoor enthusiasts seeking unparalleled natural beauty.

Renowned for its colorful rhyolite mountains, bubbling hot springs, and vast lava fields, this remote wilderness in Fjallabak Nature Reserve is another one of the best day trips to try from Reykjavik!

Here, hiking trails wind through the terrain, offering panoramic vistas of volcanic peaks, moss-covered valleys, and geothermal vents.

The lava fields and the rhyolite mountains were formed by ancient volcanic activity. In this area, you can admire lots of black obsidian volcanic rock which is known for its unique and smooth appearance.

The natural hot springs are another draw of Landmannalaugar, as is Sigöldugljúfur which is a dramatic canyon known as The Valley of Tears.

There are lots of incredible things to see and do, but the terrain is very rugged so the best option for travelers is booking a 4WD tour or a guided trek. Glaciers and Waterfalls ehf and Try Iceland Tours both offer action-packed, full-day tours of the area that include the best waterfalls, mountains, hot springs, lava fields, and more.

The Reykjanes Peninsula, situated on the southwestern coast of Iceland, is a geological marvel teeming with dramatic landscapes and unique natural phenomena.

Renowned for its rugged volcanic terrain, Reykjanes is characterized by steaming hot springs, bubbling mud pots, and expansive lava fields, making it a captivating day trip from Reykjavik.

A highlight of the peninsula is the Seltún Geothermal Area, a space filled with vivid hues of red, yellow, and green, steaming fumaroles, and hot springs.

Geldingadalir Valley is another hotspot here with cool walks and hiking trails. The valley gained worldwide attention in 2021 with the eruption of the Fagradalsfjall Volcano.

Visitors can also check out the Reykjanes Lighthouse and the Bridge Between Continents, the latter of which spans the narrow fissure where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge.

Explore the Reykjanes Peninsula by either renting a car and doing a road trip around the area, or joining a guided tour !

  • Distance from Reykjavik: 379km
  • Driving time: 4.5 hours

Another one of the coolest day trips from the city is Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon on the southeastern coast of Iceland.

Fed by the Vatnajökull Glacier, Europe’s largest ice cap, this otherworldly lagoon showcases a mesmerizing array of icebergs, sculpted by the relentless forces of nature.

A bit further along the coast from this stunning glacier is Diamond Beach, and most day trips combine the two natural attractions into one tour.

Named for the glistening icebergs that wash ashore from the nearby lagoon, Diamond Beach is covered in countless crystalline fragments, resembling diamonds strewn upon black volcanic sands.

Another fun day trip to try when you visit Reykjavik is whale watching! Anyone interested in animals and marine life should definitely book a whale watching cruise that takes you around the icy waters and gives you the chance to spot these majestic giants frolicking in the ocean.

April to late September or early October is the best time for whale watching tours from Reykjavik, with June, July and August being the absolute best months.

There is nothing quite as spectacular as touring the North Atlantic Ocean and admiring the humpback whales, minke whales, porpoises, and dolphins in their natural habitat.

Combine your whale watching tour with a visit to the Whales of Iceland Exhibition located in Reykjavik Harbour. This is a super cool place to learn more about whales in Iceland!

There are lots of fun things to do in Reykjavik. It wasn't easy to narrow it down, but we've put together this list of the best things to do, places to visit, and must-see tourist attractions in Reykjavik for you to enjoy during your stay.

12. Visit Reykjavik's Geothermal Swimming Pools

Laugardalslaug is the largest pool in Reykjavik and popular

From the mighty glaciers to the rolling waves of the Atlantic Ocean to the steaming geothermal pots, Iceland is a land that, in many ways, is defined by water. So, it makes sense that one of the top things to do in Reykjavik involves water.

What better way to connect to Icelandic culture than emulating the locals and visiting some of the  best swimming pools in Reykjavik ?

Thanks to Iceland's renewable energy policies, the use of water in large capacities (i.e., for swimming pools and saunas) is very affordable, making it a favorite pastime among Icelanders. It's also one of the best things to do in Reykjavik in winter, as many have heated water, making them accessible year-round.

There are 18 swimming pools located in the greater Reykjavik area alone. Check out the map below to find your nearest swimming pool.

Some of these locations have indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, and at least one hot tub (some even have as many as seven or eight). Think of Icelandic swimming pools as more like a luxury spa than your everyday communal pool at home.

For the entry price of only around 9-10 USD, this might be the cheapest spa you've ever come across.

If you're looking for something even more natural, there's the geothermally-heated water by Reykjavik's beach, Nautholsvik , and a small foot bath by the  Grotta  nature reserve called Kvika. These small pools are great examples of free things to do in Reykjavik.

If your Iceland accommodation is centrally located, the obvious choice would be to attend Sundholl Reykjavikur, Iceland's oldest public bath, situated only a few hundred meters behind the mighty Hallgrimskirkja  church.

Sundholl Reykjavikur is the popular popular pool in Iceland's capital.

This swimming pool is housed in a building that dates to 1937 and was renovated in 2017. Previously, it only had an indoor pool and two outdoor hot tubs, but now it has an indoor and outdoor pool, two saunas, three hot tubs, one children's pool, and a cold tub.

Another popular pool in central Reykjavik is Vesturbaejarlaug , a swimming pool in the city's western area. Vesturbaejarlaug is an outdoor pool with a few hot tubs and a couple of saunas and is a popular hangout spot for locals and travelers alike.

The largest pool in Reykjavik is the Laugardalslaug pool . This pool sits within Reykjavik's recreational center, Laugardalur , where you can also find all of the following:

Laugardalsholl Sports Center

Reykjavik Botanical Garden

Reykjavik Family Park and Zoo

Asmundarsafn Sculpture Museum

A World Class Gym

The Laugar Spa

Skautahollin Ice Skating Rink

Given the range of attractions offered here, Laugardalslaug is the perfect place to bring the whole family.

  • Read more about  What to Do With Young Kids in the Reykjavik Area

The Reykjavik Botanical Garden is lovely in the summertime

The Reykjavik Botanical Garden is close to the Laugardalslaug swimming pool.

Something to be aware of is that you'll be required to get naked before entering the pools. This is not some peculiar ritual but is strictly hygiene-related. Showers are separated by sex, but as the chlorine levels in the swimming pools are very low, everyone must wash thoroughly before taking a dip. If you try to avoid it, you'll likely be reprimanded by a local or one of the bathing guards.

Perhaps the best thing about Reykjavik's swimming pools is that you can enjoy them year-round and in every type of weather. You can easily relax with a soak in an outdoor hot tub, even if it's 23 F (-5 C) outside and snowing. This is one of the fun things to do in Reykjavik for visitors of all ages.

FlyOver Iceland is a fascinating experience that combines cinema, storytelling and technology.

One of the newer attractions in Reykjavik that should be on your list of Reykjavik things to do, especially during bad weather, is booking a ticket to FlyOver Iceland . In this immersive experience, visitors get a chance to take a flight over Iceland without needing to hop on a plane.

Located in the Grandi area in central Reykjavik, FlyOver Iceland combines storytelling, technology, and cinema to give visitors an exhilarating experience. When you arrive, you'll see two pre-shows before taking the flight.

The viking longhouse at FlyOver Iceland

The first is called the Longhouse, where you'll see a house reminiscent of the early settler's dwellings here in Iceland. This settlement exhibition is a truly unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the history of Iceland.

You'll then move into a multi-projection experience that transports you from the formation of this island right through to today.

Then, it's time to take flight. You sit in front of a 65-foot (20-meter) spherical screen in a comfortable seat. The high-definition film visuals, mixed with the movements of your seat, will give you the sensation of soaring above the land of fire and ice. It's a beautiful way to see Icelandic nature and perfect for those who don't have much time to explore the countryside.

The Sky Lagoon is especially beautiful for watching the sunset or for enjoying the midnight sun. If you're lucky during a winter visit, you may even spot the northern lights as they make sure to keep lighting dim during the darker months.

Towering over the center of Reykjavik is Hallgrimskirkja church, which is visible from almost every angle of the city, making it very easy to find. Of the many places to visit, this is one of the most famous landmarks in Iceland .

At the top of this 244-foot (75-meter) tall expressionist-style building is a viewing platform boasting 360-degree views of the entire city. Along with the view from Perlan on Oskjuhlid hill , this is probably the best view you'll get of the city.

The tower is open daily, except when there are mass services and events. Entry to the top is approximately 10 USD for adults but less than 2 USD for children aged 7-16. Traveling to the top is free for younger children.

Visiting Hallgrimskirkja church is one of the top things to do in Reykjavik

The largest in Iceland, this church is named after minister and poet Hallgrímur Pétursson (1614-1674), the author of the famed Passion Hymns or "Passíusálmarnir," as they're known in Icelandic.

The building was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, one of Iceland's most well-known architects. Work on the projects started in 1945, and the church wasn't fully ready until 1986 when it was opened to the public.

Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík

The beautiful basalt columns at Svartifoss  waterfall on the South Coast of Iceland inspired the church's architecture. It also houses the largest concert organ in Iceland at 50 feet (15 meters) tall with 5,275 pipes and a weight of 25 tons.

Also, take note of the beautiful entrance door and glass art designed by artist Leifur Breiðfjörð.

In front of the church is a statue of Icelandic voyager Leifur Eiríksson, the first European to set foot in North America, more than 500 years before Christopher Columbus.

Top Culture Tours

Hallgrimskirkja church is near many Reykjavik attractions

To truly soak up the culture, you'll want to make sure to visit the main shopping streets, Laugavegur , Bankastraeti, Austurstraeti , Laekjargata , and Skolavordustigur . These are all easily accessible in the central area of the city and are home to some great Iceland hotels .

We heartily recommend the many outdoor clothing chains selling extreme wear and outdoor gear if shopping is your thing. You can find iconic companies such as 66° North in this area. You'll also find many small boutiques selling goods with fashionable Icelandic designs.

Laugavegur is the main shopping street in Reykjavik

There, you can find the "Neighborhood of the Gods," where the names of the streets derive from the Old Norse religion. You can find Odin's Street (Odinsgata), Thor's Street (Thorsgata), Loki's Path (Lokastigur), Freya's Street (Freyjugata), and several others.

You'll also find colorful houses, beautiful gardens, and plenty of street art, and you will most likely bump into one of the resident cats, as they're very common pets in central Reykjavik. You can even do a special  cat walking tour in Reykjavik to spot some of the city's most famous feline residents!

Cats are very common in Reykjavik

The lovely cat Ófelía is a common sight in Reykjavik stores.

Reykjavik's city lake (Reykjavikurtjorn, or Tjornin for short) is popular with travelers, especially bird enthusiasts. The area is home to a bevy of swans and a raft of ducks.

In winter, the lake sometimes freezes, allowing people to cross on foot, ice skate, or even make a slippery football field. The lake is framed by beautiful old houses, behind which lies Holavallakirkjugardur, the oldest cemetery in Reykjavik.

Make sure to visit Tjornin in Reykjavik

The Nordic House was designed by an internationally famous architect, Finnish-born Alvar Aalto. You'll often find exhibitions and live music at The Nordic House, as well as a cozy restaurant with views of the nearby lake.

Further south, you'll reach the sea, where you can walk along Aegissida street and enjoy the stunning views of the ocean with Bessastadir , the presidential residence, seen from across the bay. Sunsets are particularly spectacular from here.

Traveling east, you'll pass the Reykjavik Domestic Airport, the starting point of most helicopter tours . Continuing this way, you'll head towards Nautholsvik  beach and the forested Oskjuhlid hill. From here, there's an excellent vantage point of the city from the top of the Perlan Museum viewing platform. You can access it when visiting  the Wonders of Iceland exhibition , one of the best places to visit in Reykjavik.

Alternatively, you could head further west towards the Grotta nature reserve. This area boasts a lighthouse, beach, and scenic foot bath called Kvika.

The Perlan Museum houses an interesting nature exhibition, an ice cave, and aurora show!

When people are upset about political events, they also come to Austurvollur Square to protest the Icelandic parliament, located just by the square.

Cafes and shops line one side of the square, and just behind the parliament building is Reykjavik's oldest church, Domkirkjan .

The Althingi building stands at Austurvollur square

If you're staying in Reykjavik over a weekend, you could also visit the city's flea market, Kolaportid . This is an eclectic marketplace where you can buy an authentic Icelandic lopapeysa , a hand-knitted wool sweater that makes for a great souvenir.

The flea market is located by Reykjavik harbor and has many interesting items for sale, including several local delicacies. The atmosphere is lively, and you can find good bargains between 11 AM and 5 PM on Saturdays and Sundays.

A little further along in the Old Harbor, you can find Grandi , Reykjavik's fish-packing district. Old fishing factories and boat repair shacks have been turned into trendy shops, cafes, start-up companies, museums, restaurants, and breweries.

Grandi is an example of the city's ever-changing face. While here, stop at Valdis for one of the best ice creams in town or have a locally brewed beer at Bryggjan Brewery.

If exploring by foot isn't for you, take a scenic helicopter ride over the city where you make a sightseeing stop on top of one of its surrounding mountains, Mt. Esjan , for unparalleled views.

Other popular tours in and around the city include whale watching and puffin tours or horseback riding tours . The most commonly sighted whales in the Faxafloi Bay next to Reykjavik are minke whales, humpbacks, porpoises, and dolphins.

Another option is to visit Videy , the most famous island off the Reykjavik shore. Videy is home to the Yoko Ono Imagine Peace Tower , a memorial to John Lennon.

Various seabirds also frequent the shore and the islands, such as gannets, gulls, cormorants, the arctic tern, and of course, the puffins (though only in summertime). There's no shortage of things to do around Reykjavik!

Try fresh seafood in Iceland

Reykjavik has some genuinely outstanding local and international cuisine. Why not make one of your activities in Reykjavik exploring some of the best restaurants in Reykjavik ?

Icelandic food culture focuses heavily on seafood and lamb. You can never go wrong by ordering the fish of the day in one of Reykjavik's restaurants.

You can find some fantastic  seafood restaurants  or steakhouses that celebrate using local ingredients. Besides Icelandic cuisine, there are also plenty of excellent Italian restaurants , along with Thai, Indian, Mexican, and Japanese places to be found within the city.

To taste the best of Icelandic cuisine, go on a Reykjavik food walk  and savor some of the country's most delicious delicacies.

Icelandic food is unusual but creative.

If you're into trying unusual foods, why not check out some traditional Icelandic cuisines such as sour ram's testicles or sheep's head?

The most notorious food in Iceland is probably the fermented shark. You'll want to wash the shark down with a shot of Brennivin, Iceland's "black death" schnapps. This combination is often seen as a rite of passage or proof of strength and is a popular dare for Icelanders with foreign visitors.

You can find some fermented shark meat in the flea market Kolaportid, which is open every weekend.

Traditional Icelandic food can be quite off-putting to foreigners, but you still have to try it!

Most people you'll meet on your travels in Reykjavik will recommend having an Icelandic hot dog.

The hot dog stand Baejarins Beztu ("The Town's Best"), near Reykjavik harbor, has a reputation for selling the most delicious hot dogs in Iceland.

There's usually a long line there, particularly in the afternoon and on weekends, but most foreign visitors claim these sausages to be the best in the world. Just ask President Bill Clinton or Kim Kardashian, two of the stand's best-known guests.

The classic option is to get "eina med ollu" or "one with everything." This order includes a remoulade (a mayonnaise-based sauce), sweet mustard, ketchup, and a mix of crunchy and raw onions.

Whatever your preferences, this is the place to go if you like a good hot dog, and it won't break the bank.

Harpa Concert Hall in the city center is one of the must-visit places in Reykjavik

Harpa Concert and Conference Hall is an impressive glass building near the old harbor of Reykjavik.

It's worth visiting this iconic building for its architecture alone, as you'll be able to admire it both from the outside and inside and get some great pictures.

By the harbor is the Harpa Concert Hall, another of the great things to do in Reykjavik, Iceland

Several multicultural celebrations occur in the building, and at night, it's lit up with moving LED artwork by Ólafur Elíasson.

The lights on the facade of the building are sometimes used interactively. At different times, people have been able to control the lights by playing a light organ, splashing the color of their choice on the hall through their phone, or playing the computer game Pong using the building as a monitor.

Sólfarið, or the Sun Voyager, is a sculpture by Reykjavík's coastline

It's not just in Harpa and the local live performances that you can find Reykjavik's art scene. Take your pick of museums, galleries, outdoor sculptures, and street art, which are all widely available.

The sculpture, Sun Voyager (pictured above), is a popular attraction nestled along the seaside. It's close to Harpa Concert Hall and has a fantastic view of Mt Esja.

If you keep your eyes peeled, you'll likely be able to spot several other sculptures around town.

The two largest sculpture museums are the Einar Jonsson Museum , next to Hallgrimskirkja Church, and the Asmundarsafn Museum in the Laugardalur recreational area.

You can even find an artificial thermal foot bath, Kvika, among the rocks by the seashore, making this the perfect spot to keep your feet warm while watching the northern lights.

If you want to submerge yourself in water inside the city limits but still maintain a view of the ocean, head towards Nautholsvik beach.

There's a warm wading pool by the sand and a warm tub by the sea. If you're brave enough, you can go for a swim in the ocean. The heat at Nautholsvik beach comes from Iceland's hot springs, the most famous of which is at the Geyser geothermal area on the  Golden Circle  route. Changing facilities and a cafe serving light snacks and drinks are on-site.

Next to Nautholsvik is Oskjuhlid hill, where you can walk among the remains of old World War Two bunkers found between two forest trails.

Then there's  Ellidaardalur , in the middle of the city, where you can fish or have a picnic by a small waterfall. Ellidaardalur is popular with locals who go jogging or cycling through this inner-city paradise.

Northern Lights tourism in Iceland: You can seek, but you may not find

iceland tours from reykjavik

Amelia Nierenberg

ICELAND – From the outside, it may seem like the Northern Lights dance across Iceland’s skies each night. On Icelandair ads, planes fly across shimmering curtains in the sky. On social media, travellers gaze at the green bands above them. The lights are even on some recycling bins in Reykjavík, the capital: “Keep Iceland Clean”.

In the past decade or so, an aurora borealis industrial complex has boomed in Iceland. Many rent a car and go out on their own, but there are Northern Lights big bus tours and Northern Lights minibus tours and Northern Lights Super Jeep tours. There are private guides and boat cruises. There is an observatory base camp. There is even a museum.

But the lights can be elusive.

“Tourists sometimes expect, like, ‘At what time do you turn them on?’” says Mr Bjorn Saevar Einarsson, a forecaster at the country’s meteorological office, chuckling. “Like we have a switch in the back room.”

In 2024, the letdowns have been especially intense.

The Northern Lights, which are also called the aurora borealis, are most visible when there are solar flares, which are big eruptions on the sun that send charged particles towards earth. This year, the sun is approaching the peak of its 11-year cycle of activity, which some assume means that the displays could peak too.

But the enhanced solar activity does not necessarily mean the northern lights will be brighter or more frequent, scientists wearily explain. Instead, they mostly mean that the lights can be seen farther south than usual. In recent months, they have been visible in Arizona and Missouri in the United States, and southern England.

That does not mean much for Iceland.

In fact, Icelanders and scientists said, this winter is nothing special. Sometimes, the lights are there. Sometimes, they are not. Just like always.

Hunting the lights

iceland tours from reykjavik

But nothing special, with the Northern Lights, is still very special. And so tourists keep coming.

In February, I joined the fray. For four nights, I looked for telltale sky shimmers in and around Reykjavík.

I booked my tickets riding high – this was the best year yet, right?

But as I learnt more, and as my flight neared, my hopes ebbed. Scientists and tour leaders gently told me that the skies were cloudy and the solar activity seemed quiet.

“Just to let you know the forecast doesn’t look too good,” Ms Inga Dis Richter, chief commercial officer at Icelandia, a tourism agency, wrote in an e-mail two days before I planned to take a minibus trip with Reykjavik Excursions, one of its tour operators.

“But,” she added, “this can change.”

To find the lights, guides and travellers often rely on aurora forecasts, which overlay cloud cover and solar activity. They check them constantly, like a bride with an outdoor wedding in mid-April.

Some of the forecasts are free, like the aurora forecast run by Iceland’s meteorological office or Iceland at Night, which includes space weather. Some are not – Aurora Forecast, which costs US$12.99 (S$18) a year, sends alerts. Many people also turn to Facebook pages, where enthusiasts hungrily swop sightings.

Luck, though, is everything.

“There’s only one thing less predictable with the Northern Lights, and that’s the Arctic weather,” said Mr John Mason, a global expert on the lights. “An aurora forecast is barely worth the paper that it’s written on.”

The guides work hard to explain the science, and set expectations. Most companies offer a free rebooking option if the lights do not show up.

On my first night of aurora stalking, despite Ms Richter’s warnings, I joined an expectant group on the Reykjavík Excursions minibus. For US$88, I got a seat on the 19-person bus, which left the city’s central bus station at 9.30pm.

Over the next three to four hours, we would drive through the Icelandic night together. I would either see something astonishing with these strangers – the sky, banded with light – or shiver with them shoulder to shoulder, awkward in the cold.

As we pulled onto the road, Mr Gudjon Gunnarsson, the guide, set the mood early. “We are going hunting for the lights,” he said, emphasising the word “hunting”. “It’s similar to going out fishing in a lake.”

He drove for about 45 minutes, letting Reykjavík’s glow fade behind us. The city has about 140,000 people, and no real skyscrapers, so there is limited light pollution. Although the Northern Lights can appear over the city, it is best to see them in total darkness.

Then he paused and consulted with another guide.

“It is too cloudy here,” he told his flock. “So we will keep driving.”

But as we kept driving, clouds turned to a dense fog, so thick that the moon all but disappeared.

Mr Gunnarsson turned off the main highway about an hour after we left Reykjavík. He parked in a parking lot. Or maybe it was a side street? The darkness was so deep that I could make out only the moonlight on the ocean, and only then after my eyes adjusted.

We disembarked and stood dutifully beside him, staring up at the sky. Then, one woman pointed towards Reykjavík. Were those the lights? No. That was light pollution.

Mr Christof Reinhard, 65, who owns a medical laser company and was visiting with his family from Paris, mused that our search was a little bit like a safari. Sure, the desert is amazing, but it is much better with lions. Or, maybe, was this more like a whale watch?

“Instead of a boat,” he said, “you have a bus.”

iceland tours from reykjavik

Mr Gunnarsson watched the group stomp their feet and bend into the wind. Fifteen minutes. Then, half an hour. The clouds hung thick above. “There’s nothing happening here, as you can see,” he finally said to relieved chuckles. “It’s one of those nights where you just have to give up.”

Tourists can get mad, Mr Gunnarsson and other guides said. It is rare, but it does happen.

“It’s the trip that has our worst reviews,” said Mr Eric Larimer, digital marketing manager for Gray Line Iceland, a day tour and airport transport company.

A wake-up call for the aurora

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hotel Rangá (@hotelranga)

For some, the joy is in the search, even if there is no find. A few focus on astronomy, often opting to stay at Hotel Ranga, which is just off the main ring road (Route 1) near Iceland’s south coast.

The hotel looks unassuming – low-slung and wooden – but it’s one of the most famous in Iceland. A standard room costs more than US$300, depending on the season.

But Hotel Ranga does not just cater to celebrities. It also draws astronomy buffs, enticed by its “aurora wake-up call” service and its observatory, which has state-of-the-art telescopes.

“One thing is to sell them,” said Mr Fridrik Palsson, the hotel’s owner, speaking of the Northern Lights. “Another thing is to deliver them.”

About 20 years ago, before the Northern Lights industry took off, he delegated the night security guard to monitor the sky. The guard pokes his head out every few minutes to look for the telltale flicker. If he sees the lights, he alerts the guests.

The service aims to address one of the main issues with hunting for the lights: They are usually visible only on winter nights, when it is very cold, very windy and very late.

“To be a good Northern Lights observer, you need the constitution of an insomniac polar bear,” Mr Mason said.

My room phone, alas, stayed silent. But I did dream about the lights – great Wonka colours swirling, strangely, behind the Chrysler Building.

Mr Palsson built the observatory, too. Even if the lights did not show up, he figured, the stars are still magnificent – and, for city dwellers, also rare.

The hotel contracts astronomers to work the telescopes and explain the stars to guests. On my second night in Iceland, as twilight slipped below happy-hour skies, I crunched across the snow to the observatory with Mr Saevar Helgi Bragason, an Icelandic science communicator who leads the astronomy programme.

He bent into a toddler-sized telescope, focusing it on the moon’s craters. They looked clearer than the hotel, just a short walk away. It was too early for the lights, he said. And that evening seemed too cloudy (on earth) and too quiet (on the sun).

Bragason joked that the lights can get in his way. They create a mist over the stars he really wants to see. But tourists often come specifically to see them. And sometimes, he said, as they wait impatiently, they can miss the real wonder.

“You’re left with these beautiful skies above you,” he said. “Basically, literally, another universe opens up.”

Creating a lights season

Hotel Ranga was a pioneer in Iceland’s Northern Lights tourism industry. About two decades ago, people came to Iceland for the long summer days, and left as daylight slipped farther south.

“I found it rather stupid in the beginning,” admitted Mr Palsson, speaking of Northern Lights tourism.

But spreading tourism throughout the year made sense. Partly, that was an environmental concern. The tourists would crowd the country’s extraordinary natural sites over just a few months. It was also economic. When the visitors left Iceland, tourism jobs would ebb with the sunlight.

So the Northern Lights, which are reliably visible from September to March, became the backbone of the country’s winter branding, said Mr Sveinn Birkir Bjornsson, marketing and communications director at Business Iceland, which promotes the country.

“To be able to sell this product of cold and darkness, you have to have something to offer,” he said.

iceland tours from reykjavik

Now, even though June, July and August are the busiest months, tourism has evened out over the seasons. In 2023, there were about 1.1 million international visitors to Iceland during the aurora months, based on departures from Keflavík Airport, according to data from Iceland’s tourist board. From April to August, there were about 1.1 million too.

About a decade earlier, when overall tourism to Iceland was lower, there were about 336,000 departures from the main airport in the colder months, and about 446,000 in the spring and summer.

The winter travellers are drawn by the lights – and the hot springs, glaciers and icy waterfalls. It is also cheaper than the summer season.

Some try to visit volcanoes, but the country recently warned tourists to avoid the lava flows – Iceland is living in an unusually active period of seismic activity. In January, lava flowed into a small town, and last week, a volcano erupted with just 40 minutes’ notice near the Blue Lagoon thermal springs, one of the country’s biggest attractions.

The final attempts

iceland tours from reykjavik

Near midnight on my last night, a Sunday, I drove to the Grotta Lighthouse, a popular spot on the outskirts of Reykjavík.

A few die-hard experts had warned me – many tourists go there because it is darker than most of Reykjavík, but then do not think to turn off their headlights. It was also raining, greatly diminishing my chances of seeing the lights.

But I only had three hours before I had to leave to make my predawn flight. I felt a little desperate, a little dazed. I parked and approached two people who were sitting in the rain on a wet wall, looking at the water in the darkness. I climbed over seaweed, and introduced myself. What would it mean to them, I asked, if the lights suddenly appeared?

“It’d be a little bit like the cherry on top,” said Ms Catherine Norburn, 29, who was visiting from England.

She and her husband were set to fly out the next morning. They had not yet seen the lights.

“We don’t have high hopes,” said her husband, Mr Reece Norburn, 29, “but it’s now or never.”

We did not see the lights. And I did not see them later, even after pulling off the highway halfway between Reykjavík and the airport at 3.30am, half convinced by a shimmery cloud.

But I did spend more time looking up at the sky. And it is a marvel.

In New York City, where I live, the night sky blooms orange-mauve. In Iceland, the nighttime darkness is just that – darkness. Clouds roll, breaking the deep blue. Stars actually shine. Northern Lights or no Northern Lights, it was still cosmically beautiful. NYTIMES

FAQs about our multi-day trips

How does an iceland multi-day trip work.

Throughout your multi-day trip with Iceland Tours, you’ll be based in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavík or Akureyri the capital of the North. From here, you can join guided tours into the surrounding countryside to soak up the mind-blowing scenery. Your package will include at least one day trip, and depending on the length of your tour package you can opt to add more.

It’s worth bearing in mind that you won’t have the same guide throughout your trip. In fact, on each escorted group day trip from Reykjavík or Akureyri, you’ll get to meet a new guide and new fellow travelers.

What’s more, spending each night in the same accommodation means you don’t need to worry about unpacking and repacking during your trip. It also gives you the chance to experience more of the city’s restaurants, food halls, and bars. And you’ll have time to browse the local shops and visiting the city’s attractions.

How many people will there be on a multi-day trip?

When you opt for a multi-day package, you won’t be traveling with the same guide and group throughout your trip. This means that number of fellow travelers you meet on your guided excursions will vary depending on the activity.

For instance, if you’re going on an ice cave tour, your group could include a just a handful people. Meanwhile, a tour of the Golden Circle by bus will often be a larger group as you’ll likely be traveling by coach. And you’ll find evening Northern Lights tours are usually by coach too, although you have the option to upgrade to a small group, super jeep, or boat tour.

What are the buses like on a multi-day trip?

Depending on the excursion, your bus could be either a minibus or coach. Most buses will have free onboard Wi-Fi and charging points for your phone. Larger buses also have overhead compartments for stowing your bag and jacket.

It’s good to know that although there’s no restroom on the bus, your guide will make sure to include regular breaks throughout the journey.

Do multi-day trips include airport transfers to Reykjavík?

Yes, all of these multi-day trips include airport transfers by bus from Keflavík International Airport to Reykjavík on arrival and departure.

What meals are included in a multi-day trip package?

On each morning of your trip, you’ll get a tasty continental breakfast at your accommodation. In most places, this is served buffet-style in a communal dining room.

With most packages, lunch and dinner are not included so you’re free to choose from all of the options available. In Reykjavík and Akureyri, you’ll be spoiled for choice when deciding where to eat.

Some festive packages include special meals. Check the ‘What’s included?’ section for the individual package to find out exactly what you’ll get.

If your package features longer day tours, you’ll find that the guide will factor in lunch and restroom stops. But it’s still good to come prepared by packing a few snacks and plenty of water. And if you prefer, you could bring a picnic lunch rather than eat out.

Can I customize my multi-day trip?

Absolutely! You can customize your package by:

  • Picking your level of accommodation (Budget, Comfort, or Quality)
  • Extending your stay with extra nights in Reykjavík at the start or end of your trip
  • Adding optional activities, such as a food tour or glacier hike

Believe it or not, you can enjoy a foodie trip to Iceland – how Reykjavik became a culinary destination

If you thought icelandic dining meant fermented shark and dried fish, think again – kate ng find’s that cuisine in the capital is full of fresh flavours, interesting ingredients and the odd michelin star, article bookmarked.

Chef Gunnar Karl Gíslason cooking at TIDES in Reykjavik

W hat comes to mind when you hear ‘ Iceland ’? Glaciers. Volcanoes. The Blue Lagoon. A craggy, rugged landscape lit up by Northern Lights , punctuated by waterfalls and steaming pools. The island’s natural beauty is renowned the world over.

But Nordic food, on the other hand, doesn’t have the best reputation. If you’ve watched any travel show that visits Iceland , you’re likely to have seen the host grimacing over hákarl, the national dish of fermented Greenland shark. So notorious is this delicacy that the late Anthony Bourdain declared it to be one of the most disgusting things he had ever tasted; more recently, Jessica Hynes described it as a “jelly cube of ammonia” while Richard Ayoade spat his portion of hákarl out after a few chews in a 2016 episode of Travel Man.

Aside from the cured shark meat, other Icelandic dishes tourists tend to curl their toes at include svið, half a sheep’s head cross-sectioned, boiled and served with mashed potatoes; and harðfiskur, fish that is so dried out it appears almost mummified. Preservation is an important part of the country’s flavours, which means many traditional foods are smoked, salted, cured, dried, and fermented.

Modern day Iceland , however, is very different. Located only a few degrees south of the Arctic Circle, the harsh climate previously meant that locals depended heavily on subsistence farming. Now, with imports, migration, tourism, and ever-improving agricultural technologies, the capital’s food scene is full of excitement, fresh flavours and techniques, and a burgeoning sense of pride.

The culinary talent in Reykjavik started seeing exponential growth some 20 years ago, which was around the time that accomplished chef Siggi Hall first launched the Food and Fun Festival. This week-long festival sees chefs from all over the world take over restaurants and create dishes that take inspiration from their own cultures and experiences through Icelandic produce.

In the succeeding years, Iceland ’s restaurant scene has exploded, particularly in the fine dining arena. In 2017 the country gained its very first Michelin star in DILL under chef Gunnar Karl Gíslason’s stewardship, and has since been credited for paving the way for the rebranding of Icelandic cuisine. Since then, the country has collected three Michelin stars and has four more restaurants recommended in the Michelin Guide, including Gíslason’s newest gig at TIDES restaurant, housed in the stylish five-star Reykjavik EDITION Hotel.

When visiting Reykjavik during the festival, I was initially unsure what to expect. Would the emphasis be on more traditional elements of Icelandic food? Would hákarl make an appearance on any of the menus? Would I be offered something controversial like whale or puffin meat? You can find these highly contentious foods at a handful of restaurants in Reykjavik, such as at Grillmarkaðurinn or 3 Frakkar.

But there was no hákarl, whale or puffin meat during the festival, with chefs keen to distance themselves from awkward conversations and difficult ingredients. Instead, they made use of the abundant lamb and fish available to Iceland, as well as lesser-known ingredients like Icelandic moss and crowberries. At TIDES, which was taken over by Michelin-starred chef Osman Sezener, of Turkey’s celebrated OD Urla, I feasted on an open fire-cooked Arctic char with a south Turkish citrus sauce and an Aegean-style octopus with a perfectly crisp tentacle tip that gave way to a pleasant chewiness.

I also had the pleasure of dining at Brut, a powerhouse when it comes to award-winning seafood dishes. Headed by another former Dill chef, Ragnar Eiríksson, and sommelier Ólafur Örn Ólafsson, Brut’s relaxed atmosphere and open kitchen is inviting and friendly, with staff who are keen to have a little chat with customers. Contrasting textures and flavours ruled my night at Brut, with silky, buttery cod and delicate leeks juxtaposed with meaty, powerful monkfish served alongside fermented garlic and braised cabbage.

Dining in Reyjkjavik is a very laid-back affair, with people swanning in late for reservations and hardly anyone batting an eyelid. This was the case everywhere I went and singled me out as a tourist, as I was frequently one of just a handful of diners who turned up on time for their tables.

Following dinner, there is no shortage of excellent drinking spots peppered throughout the city. Röntgen Bar serves a mean Reykjavik Mule using the country’s signature alcohol, Brennivin; Vínstúkan Tíu Sopar is a basement wine bar with good vibes and excellent wine recommendations; and Kaffibarinn is nice and cosy with a great selection of beers.

Although Reykjavik is not an inexpensive city, it is possible to find cheap eats. You’ll spot the signature red-and-white hut of the Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur hotdog stands across the city, often with lines snaking out of them – you can score a hotdog and a soft drink for about £6. Reykjavik is also famed for its bakeries where you can grab sandwiches and pastries that are more wallet-friendly. The cinnamon rolls at at Brauð & Co are legendary (and enormous). For vegan food, head to Mama Reykjavik where you’ll find flavour-filled stews and wraps served in a cosy setting.

The city has undoubtedly found its feet as a food destination. My advice would be to make your reservations early – even if you don’t really have to turn up on time for them.

Best restaurants in Reykjavik

Headed by Michelin-starred chef Gunnar Karl Gíslason, TIDES prides itself on showcasing the best of Iceland’s produce. As part of the Reykjavik EDITION, it’s the first introduction to Icelandic cuisine for many tourists – and what a fantastic introduction it is.

Seafood plays an important role in Nordic cuisine and Brut is one of the best places in Reykjavik to enjoy it. It’s won a number of awards for good reason – it’s a wonderful, elegant space to spend an afternoon or evening of feasting.

This Michelin-recommended restaurant is bringing Mediterranean flavours to the Nordic island with style. It was recently featured in the latest series of Somebody Feed Phil, with host Phil Rosenthal singing its praises.

Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur

Get in line for the world-famous Icelandic hot dogs, which are unusual because they incorporate lamb meat in the sausage instead of the usual pork or beef. Order a ‘one with everything’ to get all the toppings, including raw onions, crispy fried onions, apple-based ketchup, mustard and remoulade.

Bernhoftsbakari

Iceland’s oldest bakery is well worth a visit, especially if you’re curious about traditional baked goods like Icelandic cheesecake, which is made with skyr, and Hjónabandssæla, a rhubarb jam-filled cake known as ‘Marriage Cake’.

Kebabs continue to make their mark around the world as a traveller’s favourite, and Mandi is no exception, especially with its budget-friendly prices. Grab freshly grilled mixed plates and wraps here, either to eat in or to go.

Couple Who Survived Serious Car Accident Gets Engaged in Hospital ICU: 'Love Wins'

Elliot Griffiths and Zak Nelson of Norwich, England, were involved in a head-on collision just hours after they arrived in Iceland for a vacation

Erin Clack is a Staff Editor for PEOPLE. She has been writing about fashion, parenting and pop culture for more than 15 years.

Zak Nelson TikTok

One British couple turned a harrowing ordeal into something to celebrate — an engagement!

Elliot Griffiths and Zak Nelson of Norwich, England, had just arrived in Reykjavik, Iceland, on April 19 when they were involved in a head-on collision in their rental car, as Nelson explained in a video he posted on TikTok.

"I'm in Iceland on what was meant to be the last day of a holiday. A nice trip, Elliot and I renting a car, driving around the entire country seeing all sorts of things," a visibly emotional Nelson recounted, explaining that they landed and spent a few hours exploring before calling it a day.

"About 4:15 p.m. driving towards our accommodation for the night, some twonk decided that they were going to pull out and overtake a van whilst we were driving towards them," he continued. "They appeared out of nowhere and smashed into us head on, and I was doing about 55 miles per hour at the time."

"We are lucky to be alive, when you see the picture of the car," Nelson later told BBC Radio Norfolk .

Nelson explained in his video that Griffiths had to undergo emergency surgery due to "internal bleeding" while he himself was left with bad bruising, which he showed in a follow-up video on TikTok. He said he was discharged from the hospital two days after the accident, while Griffiths continued to recover.

In a third TikTok video , which featured the hashtag "Love Wins" in the caption, Nelson shared the happy news that the couple had gotten engaged at the hospital. As he sat by a smiling Griffiths' bed, he first gave an update on his new fiancé's health.

"See Elliot is here, he's doing well. He's off the tubes and things," he said. "And we thought we'd share some happy news."

He then recounted how the spontaneous proposal unfolded. "When we were in the ICU on Friday, we didn't know about each [other's condition]," he said.

"And then the nurses pushed us together for the brief period of time we were in ICU together. And you asked me a question, didn't you? What did you ask me?" Nelson continued, turning to look at Griffiths.

As they both smiled and laughed, Nelson recalled, "He asked me to marry him and I said yes, there in ICU, and all the nurses clapped."

Nelson said they shared the engagement because they wanted to show that "there's some good news to come out of our trip after all."

He also revealed that he did a little shopping while Griffiths remains in the hospital. "I've now gone and bought him a ring from Iceland," Nelson said, panning the camera to give a close-up look at the silver band etched with a "dragon pattern" on Griffiths' finger.

"So he's officially mine," Nelson declared as he concluded the video by thanking people for their prayers and messages of support following the accident and vowing that the couple would return to Iceland for a vacation do-over some time in the future.

These results are from a survey Prósent conducted April 23 to 28 for Morgunblaðið .

Agenda: 30 Years of EEA Cooperation- 8 May 2024 at Grand Hotel and in Kolaportið

Banner EEA 30 Iceland 2024

On the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the EEA Agreement,  Rannís, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Ministry for Higher Education, Science and Innovation, and the EU Delegation to Iceland will host a day of celebratory events on 8 May.

Seminar- 30 Years of EEA Cooperation - Past achievements and future prospects

Where: grand hotel reykjavík - háteigur | when: 10:00 - 12:15, registration is required | more information about the event | webstream |.

The 1994 entry into force of the Agreement on the European Economic Area was a watershed moment for Iceland. For 30 years, the EEA Agreement has ensured free movement of goods, services, persons, and capital throughout the 30 EEA States, benefiting citizens and businesses alike. Around 60% of Iceland´s goods and services are exported to the internal market and this seamless access has significantly contributed to growth and prosperity in Iceland. Moreover, the EEA cooperation has allowed for Iceland´s active participation in different EU programmes and the EEA Grants, boosting scientific research, innovation, education, youth, culture, and creative cooperation. It is hard to imagine Iceland´s advancement in the last 30 years without the unique EEA partnership.

The 30 years anniversary of the EEA provides an opportunity to highlight the achievements but also to look ahead and review prospects and possible challenges.

The seminar will be in English .

Sigríður Valgeirsdóttir, Director General and Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, will open the event.

Ávörp og erindi:

Þórdís Kolbrún Reykfjörð Gylfadóttir, Minister for Foreign Affairs

Áslaug Arna Sigurbjörnsdóttir, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation (video address)

Iliana Ivanova, EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth (video address)

Lucie Samcová-Hall Allen , Ambassador of the European Union to Iceland

Borgar Þór Einarsson, Deputy Managing Director of the EEA & Norway Grants

Ágúst Hjörtur Ingþórsson, Director General of Rannís

Panel discussions:  EU Programmes - opportunities and challenges

After the keynote speeches there will be panel discussions about the EEA cooperation and Iceland's participation in EU programmes.

Since the start of the EEA cooperation in 1994, Iceland has actively participated in different EU programmes, currently twelve in total. These focus primarily on research and innovation, youth, education, and culture, as well as on climate and digitalization, health, and social issues. During this time, Iceland has successfully competed for funds, and program participation has created valuable knowledge and experience. In 2014 to 2020 more than twenty-six thousand people studied in and visited Iceland as part of the cooperation and in the same period, more than fourteen thousand Icelanders studied in EU countries. Today, participation in EU programmes contributes to Iceland´s vibrant society, economy, and culture.

Members of the panels will discuss the benefits of EU program participation and look ahead to opportunities and possible challenges.

Moderator: Björn Malmquist, Journalist, RÚV - Brussel's Correspondent

Ambassador of the European Union Hosts a Europe Day Reception

Hvar: grand hótel reykjavík - háteigur | hvenær: 12:30 - 14:00, registration is required | more information about the event.

After the EEA 30 seminar, the Ambassador of the European Union to Iceland, H.E. Ms Lucie Samcová-Hall Allen , invites all seminar guests to a Europe Day reception at the same venue. The EU Delegation will offer light refreshments and drinks as two jazz musicians will play some nice tunes.

Harvest Festival - 30 Years of EEA Cooperation

Where: kolaportið | when: 14:00 - 18:00, free entry - public festival - more information on official website.

Mr. Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, President of Iceland, will open the festival

At the main hall of Kolaportið, some 50 booths will showcase examples of the many success stories of the EU - Icelandic cooperation. EU programmes have contributed funding to a wide range of projects in Iceland in sectors such as education, creative industries, youth, research, innovation, civil protection, civil society, and much more.

Festival guests will have a chance to discuss with representatives from these interesting projects in Iceland as well as representatives of Embassies of EU Member States and learn more about the benefits of European cooperation.

Artists and musicians will entertain guests with songs and music on a main stage at the event, and festival guests will be offered a celebratory cake, coffee and pastries - as expected in any good celebration!

The festival is a public event and free of charge - join us at Kolaportið for an entertaining and informative celebration of 30 years of European cooperation between Iceland and the European Union!
