Jack Whitehall: Settle Down
Review of the comic's first stand-up tour in four years
Just before the interval of his first tour in four years, Jack Whitehall confesses to always seeking any distraction to avoid having a serious conversation.
That realisation raises the possibility that in the second half the comic will challenge himself to start probing deeper subjects, especially given that the set-up of Settle Down is how, at 34, he is growing up and discarding trivial things as he prepares for fatherhood.
However, save for a couple of fleeting and notable exceptions, deeper self-analysis is thin on the ground. There’s far more about his ‘fur baby’ dog, and how the toy poodle is emasculating (how very on-brand for this perennial beta-male), than the higher responsibility of being a parent.
Whitehall remains the archetypal banter merchant – proving the same great company that’s such an asset to panel shows and talk shows – as his riffs, self-effacingly about his privilege and his feeble masculinity. It’s sprinkled with a few good gags, but it feels like we’ve been here before. His comedy isn’t maturing as his life is.
After the obligatory references to his father, he harks back to his school days at Marldborough, as he calls it – as if that errant extra letter will keep the lawyers at bay – in the shadow of much more successful alumni such as Emma Watson and Robert Pattison. (And the Princess of Wales, who he fails to mention, maybe she’s an echelon of poshness too far). But he has a nice line in exaggerated indignation at the one time the Daily Mail did name him as an old boy, in a far-from-flattering story about the school.
There’s no faulting his performance skills – he’s excellent at both feigning spontaneity and putting in a few genuine ad-libs, and effective at acting out exaggerated scenarios. His burgeoning demand in Hollywood – where he spent at least one of the years since his last tour – is not a total surprise.
It means he can hold the audience. In the brief moment he talks about his partner Roxy Horner’s miscarriage, he has the audience’s full attention and sympathy. But it’s not long before that compulsion to head for the trivial kicks in again and we’re imagining God designing zebras, inspired by a safari he took where he found himself among Americans who were – guess what? – loud and stupid.
Fans already know most of his life’s landmarks from the media, such as how diabetic Roxy collapsed at the Brit Awards – related here with something of a glib punchline. But sometimes the elevated circles he moves in are exploited well. The relatable fears of how you measure up to a partner’s ex become a whole different prospect when that man is Leonardo DiCaprio.
Much is about he’s a victim of relentless ill-fortune – presumably considered more accessible than his rarefied upbringing and A-list lifestyle. A recurring theme is about he’s a ‘massive melt’, a coward unable to defend Roxy’s honour when a bouncer disrespects her. Meanwhile, a routine about the humiliation of dining alone in a restaurant gives reign to those act-outs, though there’s not too much substance behind it. And of course there’s an anecdote about drunken high jinks.
Plenty of topics are stand-up staples that could be – and have been – told by anyone: mocking right-wing fundamentalists for getting vexxed about ‘woke’ Disney movies; how Americans would whoop and cheer at news of him becoming a parent but Brits are cynically subdued; wondering what songs will be golden oldies when the current youngsters are in their dotage… He closes with a stirring speech about what he loves about Britain – Greggs, pub gardens and surly service staff – as stirring music plays. It seems cynical and manipulative.
In a rare philosophical moment, Whitehall reflects that he spent his youth chasing pleasure, while now he’s achieving happiness. If only he could find similar maturity in his comedy, which offers plenty of enjoyable snacks, but little that’s more satisfying.

The 34-year-old actor, comic and writer is promising that this will be his ‘most personal’ tour to date.
In it, the Manchester University alumni will talk about growing up and ‘hurtling towards middle age’.
Jack recently announced that he is expecting his first child with Roxy Horner, his long-term partner.
Upon announcing his tour, Jack Whitehall said: “This is my most personal show yet, with plenty of material about the big changes that have happened in my life. It’s about my struggle to settle down gracefully.
“I’ve got a long-term partner, a ridiculous dog and am now hurtling towards middle aged without a clue. It’s about a foppish man-child’s cack handed attempt at adulting!”

What time will Jack Whitehall be on stage in Manchester?
According to the AO Arena, doors will open to the event at 6pm, with the event starting at 7.30pm.
As always with the venue, allow plenty of time to pass through security and find your seats.
Are there still tickets for Jack Whitehall in Manchester?
Jack Whitehall’s return to the stand-up circuit has prompted massive demand – unsurprising when you remember he’s already had three sell-out arena tours before this one,
So as you might expect, tickets are already quite hard to come by.
There are a few single seats dotted around the AO Arena on both dates with tickets starting at £25.
If you’re after a couple of tickets, you’ll be looking at the Platinum seating, priced between £76.55 and £92.35 each.
What to expect
Here’s a little taste of what’s to come this week…

Local MMA star Tom Aspinall has come out to criticise the start times for UFC 304 here in Manchester, calling it ‘unfair’ for fans here in the UK.
In case you missed that rather big announcement, the UFC is returning to Manchester after nearly a decade and will be the very first sporting event held at the brand-new Co-op Live Arena, which is finally set to open this week following multiple delays (touch wood).
However, in an effort to keep broadcasters and the UFC ‘s massive audience back in the US, the fight card will be starting until around 3am – and that’s at the very earliest.
Responding to the decision the Atherton -born and Salford -based fighter posted a video on his socials saying, “As a fan who wants to watch it live, I think it is absolutely terrible”.
@tomaspinallofficial My thoughts on UFC Manchester fight times for you UK fans 🤛 #ufc #manchester #foryoupage #viralvideo #fans #tomaspinall ♬ No Loss – Instrumental Version – Canon
He goes on to say that “it’s just not fair on the fans – the UK fans obviously. It’s predominantly an American audience so I understand that, they want to sell to them, but why can’t they sell to them in the afternoon which is our evening time?
While he admitted it “doesn’t make that much difference” to him as a fighter, the 31-year-old went on to ask, “Why can’t the American watch it in the afternoon and Manchester , the UK and European fans can all fly to the event and sell out this new arena?”
“I mean, it’s going to sell out regardless, mate”, Aspinall reiterated, adding that “we’re very lucky to have a pay-per-view event in Manchester” but that forcing the British audience and Mancs to watch something just down the road at a US-convenient time just doesn’t seem right.
There’s been plenty of backlash amongst MMA fans online too, with many stating that it simply goes to show that the UFC as an organisation “don’t care” about overseas supporters as much as they claim to.

Are you all complaining about the start time? I was at Bisping v Henderson in Manchester with a 3am start time and it was fucking wild!! Stop been a massive set of wet lettuces and embrace the opportunity 😝🥳 Sadly ticket prices will be ridiculous, so I’ll probably miss it. https://t.co/kVDZfwS0Ua — 𝗣𝗛𝗜𝗟🪿 (@TheGooseMMA) April 24, 2024

As the current interim heavyweight champion, Aspinall will be right up at the top of the billing for UFC 304, which is the first time the event has been in the UK full stop since 2016.
The promotion’s last British fight was here in Manchester too, on a night when local legend and adopted Manc Michael Bisping retained his middleweight championship belt against Dan Henderson.
We can only hope for similarly victorious scenes for the North West this July.
As for the shiny new venue, Co-op Live , after a fair few teething problems it looks like they are now on course to open just a week or so after the initial launch date. Not so bad.

Beloved British comic Paddy McGuinness is heading back out on his first live stand-up tour in eight years this year and has announced a new run of work-in-progress shows in preparation, including one right here in Greater Manchester.
McGuinness hasn’t been out on the live comedy circuit for the best part of a decade but announced his long-awaited return late last year, with the 50-year-old heading out on the road this October.
However, as he looks to get stage sharp shape ahead of his ‘Nearly There’ tour, Paddy has picked a pair of local North West venues for the WIP sets, with a trio of shows at The Met in Bury , as well as half a dozen over in Darwen, Lancashire.
Just like the tour itself, these are sure to go quickly.

The Phoenix Nights and Max and Paddy star is playing nearly half a century of shows across the UK and Ireland from this fall onwards before closing out his tour in Dublin by April 2025.
His last tour, ‘Daddy McGuinness’ ran from 2015-16 and got pretty decent reviews across the board, with the focus largely revolving around his journey into parenthood, but his latest material is set to be quite the shift in tone.
Speaking ahead of the tour, the former Take Me Out and Top Gear host said: “It’s been eight years since my last tour and there’s lots of things to laugh about! I’m looking forward to getting back in front of a live audience, along with running the gauntlet of cancel culture, clickbait and fake news!”
Paddy also made a bit of a stir around these parts recently after he declared Bolton as still being part of Lancashire. No likey, no lighty on that one – sorry Paddy.

But never mind all that, we’re glad to see him getting back to his roots. The Farnworth -born funny man was also recently given a permanent role on BBC Radio 2 after becoming a firm favourite amongst the listenership. He will now run the 11am-1pm slot on Sundays.
As for his tour, after his warm-up shows in Bury and Darwen, the household name will be heading to The Lowry in Salford in March next year, with other nearby shows in the likes of Blackburn and Blackpool.
Tickets for Paddy McGuinness’ work-in-progress dates go on sale Friday, 3 May at 10am.
