Poyton’s Party in the Park is back for 2024 and has an announced legendary disco act as their biggest headliner ever.

Marking the 20th anniversary of the cult favourite event, the old Cheshire town which neighbours the likes of Stockport and Macclesfield is hosting its biggest party to date at Poynton Park this summer in partnership with the local Rotary Club, promising a jam-packed day of live music and more.

Confirming classic New York disco group and vocal trio Odyssey and the main event, with millions of records sold worldwide and some of the most iconic tracks of the 1970s and 80s to their name, this little one-day festival is set for a massive year.

Better still, as a fundamentally not-for-profit event raising money for local charities and community groups, you can party all day and all night whilst doing your bit for a good cause.

Alongside Odyssey , the lineup for Poynton’s Party in the Park 2024 includes critically acclaimed cover bands like The Soul Providers and Soulvation Band, performing some of the greatest soul, funk, Motown and disco hits of the 1960s.

There’s plenty of local talent from around the North West on show too, such as Manchester singer-songwriter Imogen Paige , Liverpool-based indie band The Garnetts and, returning due to popular demand, Party in the Park favourites and Poynton’s very own Monkey Harris Band.

Great name and an even greater stage presence.

They’re the stuff of legend around the local area, regularly playing the likes of the Poynton Beer Festival and this is by no means their first turn around the park.

This year’s Party in the Park is being put on by local festival organiser and Hale Barns Carnival creator, Max Eden, working alongside Poynton Rotary – who founded the event two decades ago – to deliver what they’re calling a “refreshed and updated event for all the family to enjoy”.

The one-day festival also promises to feature lots of new and exciting additions for 2024 including traditional funfair rides for all ages, alongside an extended showcase of the amazing local food and drink, as well as a new VIP area offering premium seats, table service and exclusive meet and greets.

Local station Happy Radio UK will also be covering the event as the official radio partner, broadcasting in Greater Manchester, Cheshire and across various other parts of the North West , with well-known presenters like Steve Penk, Darren Proctor and Chelsea Norris all set to be involved.

Speaking ahead of the fundraising festival, Odyssey lead singer Steven Collazo said: “We’re so excited to be headlining Poynton Party in the Park this June. We’ve heard you guys know how to party and we can’t wait to get our groove on with y’all!”

  • Why Leeds is the best city to visit this summer for live music, gigs and festivals
  • A brand-new all-British music festival is coming to Cheshire and the lineup is a pure throwback

As for organiser Max Eden, he added: “I’m thrilled to be working with Poynton Rotary this year to stage the biggest Poynton Party in the Park to date.

“We have an incredible headliner alongside outstanding local musicians and performers, amazing family attractions and the best food and drink from the local area – it’s the perfect lineup for a really good party!

“We hope to raise vital funds for Poynton Rotary to enable them to continue the incredible work they do locally in supporting charities and community groups in our area.”

Party in the Park starts at 1pm on Saturday, 8 June with tickets starting from £28.50 for adults and just £15 for 5-16s – not to mention kids four and under going completely free. You can grab your general admission, or VIP passes if you’re feeling a bit posh, right HERE .

Peter Kay statement after Co-op Live gigs cancelled for the second time

Peter Kay has issued a statement after his two gigs at Co-op Live were rescheduled – again.

The Bolton -born comedian was supposed to officially open the huge new Manchester venue last week, but ‘power supply issues’ forced it to be rescheduled.

He was then supposed to perform on Monday and Tuesday of next week instead, but these two shows have been pushed back even further.

Co-op Live has also postponed The Black Keys , who were set to perform on Saturday.

Peter Kay has now issued a statement addressing the postponement, saying it’s ‘very disappointing’.

He also said: “I know, I can’t believe it either.”

He’s even amended his own tour poster to add the disclaimer: “(If they actually open the place).”

The star joked that he was now the ‘ninth artist in the world’ to play there.

jack whitehall tour manchester

The legendary comic wrote: “To everybody with tickets, my apologies once again but unfortunately the Co-op Live still isn’t ready and so, as yet, remains untested for a large-scale audience.

“Consequently, they are having to reschedule my two shows yet again (I know I can’t believe it either).

“The first available dates the shows can reschedule to are as follows: Mon 29th April to Thurs 23rd May, Tues 30th April to Frid 24th May.

“Tickets will be transferred, or refunds given if the new dates aren’t suitable.

“It’s very disappointing but your safety is important, and I won’t compromise that.”

Co-op Live said in a statement: “Since making the difficult decision to postpone the live shows at Co-op Live due to take place this week, we have been undertaking an extensive protocol of testing critical procedures to ensure all areas are ready for fans.”

They’ve also made the rather bold decision to once again assure fans that the next raft of shows now set to be their opening gigs – big dates from Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Olivia Rodrigo – are still set to go ahead as scheduled.

Touch wood.

Today's announcement comes with reassurance that we welcome fans to Co-op Live from Boogie Wit Da Hoodie on 1 May and into Olivia Rodrigo from 3 May 2024. — Co-op Live (@TheCoopLive) April 26, 2024

“To ensure that we can run all shows safely, regretfully we have now had to take the decision to reschedule the planned The Black Keys and Peter Kay shows.

“Both The Black Keys and Peter Kay have graciously agreed to reschedule their shows. The Black Keys will now perform on 15 May 2024, and Peter Kay will now perform on 23 and 24 May 2024.

“All tickets remain valid and ticket holders will be contacted by their point of purchase. Refunds will be available for those who can no longer attend.

“We deeply appreciate the impact this will have on excited fans, and sincerely apologise for the inconvenience that this change will undoubtedly cause. Rescheduling Peter Kay and The Black Keys will give us the extra time we need to continue testing enhanced emergency communications thoroughly.

“This is vital to satisfy the rigorous set of guidelines and protocols that are necessary for a venue of this size to ensure that our fans, artists and staff have the safest experience possible.”

ITV Granada's Entertainment Correspondent Caroline Whitmore caught up with Jack Whitehall in Manchester

He's the self-confessed posh comedian who has not only won the hearts of the UK but America has gone crazy for him too!

Jack Whitehall is back on tour, and will perform in both Manchester and Liverpool as part of his new show, entitled 'Settle Down'.

It's an appropriate title, given the news the 34-year-old shared last week. He's set to become a father for the first time, after confirming that his partner Roxy Horner is pregnant.

The London-born comedian is the star of his own travel show on Netflix along with his father, Michael. He's also starring a new film, Robots, which is out today.

Summing up the plot behind the new feature film, he said: "It's a Sci-Fi rom-com but not like a Richard Curtis rom com- it's written by the people who brought you Borat."

"There is lots of my flesh involved- in fact don't watch it at the cinema watch it on your phone because my bottom is very unforgiving on the big screen."

Despite now basking in the warmth of being a worldwide star, it's here in the North West where the journey started.

He moved to Manchester to study a degree in History & Art at the University of Manchester, but soon quit to pursue a career in standup.

He said: "I started my career working the circuits in Manchester."

While the star is happy to reminisce about the earlier years, one of the city's football teams is currently a sore point.

The comedian is a match-going Arsenal fan, and has seen his team leapfrogged by Manchester City at the top of the league.

"I'm drinking water.. it's not vodka. It should be vodka.. in fact it's my tears I'm drinking!"

"Arsenal will never win the league - City always wins everything- I even planned my tour around the Arsenal fixtures.

"I took the Monday off after the last game of the season in case there was an open top bus tour. But city ruined that !"

'Settle Down' comes to Manchester's AO Arena on 21 and 24 June and Liverpool's M&S Bank Arena on 25 June.

Jack says: "Get a ticket... unless you're a City fan... then you're not welcome!"

About this show.

Jack’s always wanted to be a real man, like the ones in the audience at Top Gear, but unfortunately he likes Smirnoff Ice and looks wrong with his shirt off. Jack has firmly established himself as one of the country’s most exciting and successful comedy talents, a status cemented by his People’s Choice Award for the King of Comedy at the 2012, 2013 & 2014 British Comedy Awards. He cut his teeth at the Edinburgh Fringe, taking up four sell out shows over three consecutive years and earning an Edinburgh Comedy Award nomination in the process with his debut show. Jack has since gone on to host Live At The Apollo and the Royal Variety Performance, as well as perform stand-up at the internationally prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Canada.

Jack Whitehall on his love affair with Manchester - from mooning on the Manchester Eye, having his front door stolen in Fallowfield and being ‘chased out’ of Oldham biker pub

The comedian started his comedy career right here in the city

When Jack Whitehall had his front door stolen in Fallowfield, he did what any self-respecting student would do. He taped a bin bag to the door frame and carried on as normal. Similarly, when a lightbulb went, he and his housemates just resigned themselves to that room being ‘just for the daytime’.

One of the UK’s most well-known stand-up comedians has much more in common with his character JP, the feckless posh boy from Fresh Meat - the Channel 4 student sitcom penned by Succession creator Jesse Armstrong - than you might think.

He says that when his landlord came to get the keys back from them as they were about to move out, he actually ‘started welling up’ on seeing what they’d done to the place. “It was disrespectful,” he admits.

A couple of weeks later, one of his housemates would get a call from the aforementioned landlord, asking why there was rope, bloodstains and what looked like a crime scene in the basement.

“We’d had a murder mystery party,” he says. “He asked ‘is there anything you want to tell me? Has anything gone on in the house?’ which was pretty cool. His first instinct wasn’t to just rat us out to the police.”

Whitehall, who these days appears in Hollywood movies with The Rock and Emily Blunt, spent many years living in Manchester. Last week, he was back in town for a warm-up show, trying out his new tour material in Blackburn.

We meet at Indian street food institution Bundobust, off Piccadilly Gardens, but shoot a few pictures on Back Piccadilly, the slightly dicey alleyway behind. “I can do urban and gritty,” he jokes, having spent the bulk of his career sending up his own inescapable poshness.

jack whitehall tour manchester

He first arrived in the city after making a mess of his interview for Cambridge University. He found he’d made the right choice not long after when he was invited to spend a weekend with a friend who had made it to the famous college.

He’d been promised a ‘good night out’ but found himself at a dormitory port and cheese party where there was lots of ‘talk of literature’. He might have had a bin bag for a door, but Manchester was where he’d spend the best years of his life.

He only lasted two terms of his Art History degree after he realised that lectures on tapestries weren’t really going to help advance his comedy career. He started his own comedy night, with the on-the-nose title Comedy Sluts at the now-closed venue Sub Space, off Oxford Road, and booked some impressive emerging talent.

He compered before the likes of Matt Horne, Russell Kane and James Corden, as well as locals like Jason Cook, Steve Shanyaski and Dan Nightingale. He recalls booking John Bishop, then a well-respected local jobbing comedian but miles from the household name he is now.

There had been ‘an accounting error’, Whitehall says, meaning that they didn’t have enough money to pay him. So they gave him what they had, and made up the rest in laughing gas balloons. “He went off to do some late night radio interview on BBC Radio Manchester, and was spinning out.”

“I picked Manchester because I thought that I’d come here, coast through it, and quit as soon as I could convince my parents that stand-up was a viable career choice,” he says. “I wasn’t expecting to come here and completely fall in love with it and have the best time of my life.

“Instead, I couldn’t quit it. After I started getting paid, I continued to live in a student house in Fallowfield on Egerton Road for two years. It was like the Fresh Meat house, but about 10 times worse.

“I remember one of the first times I ever got paid properly for a set, me and my friend got over excited and went into the Northern Quarter with my pay cheque, and came back with a crossbow,” he goes on. “I don’t know why. We set up a firing range with a mattress in the garden, then realised not long after that having a crossbow in the house was not a good idea.”

jack whitehall tour manchester

It was during his two years running the club that he found his ‘schtick’, the persona that has seen him headline stadium shows around the UK. Without that time, he perhaps wouldn’t be where he is now.

“I thought ‘I’m going to own that I’m this posh fop and send that up, take the p**s out of it rather than shy away from it’. Over the space of that couple of years, I arrived at that place, and I created that persona that people now recognise as me on stage. And I had far more success as a comic the minute I unlocked that.”

He recalls returning to Manchester to play the then-MEN Arena on one occasion, and later the same evening finding himself in an unexpected lock-in at infamous Fallowfield off licence and newsagent Gaff’s. “It was the most surreal experience, playing the MEN and then back to a lock-in at a newsagents, but it was great.” The nostalgia is real.

One place he doesn’t miss is the old Comedy Store. “Jim Jeffries got punched while he was on stage,” he recalls. “A heckler came up and punched him in the face. So he downed the rest of his pint and carried on with his set. Very Jim Jeffries.

“That was a hard room. It was because it was a night out. People were there to get tanked up on Deansgate Locks, then you’d better be funny. Get it on the wrong night, and it was a bear pit.”

But it was at a biker pub in Oldham some time in the early 2000s that he had one of his most cringeworthy moments. “I remember very few specifics,” he says. “But it wasn’t great. It was a biker bar, and there was a load of biker memorabilia on the walls. Every comic got warned not to mention it. Except me. I made a load of jokes about it, and it turned out that the landlady’s husband had had a bike accident, or something like that, but no one had said.

“There might have even been a whole motorbike hanging up on the wall, so it would have been weird not to mention it. It was tumbleweed. Chased out of town. Not my finest moment. Basically never turn up to gigs late, and always do a bit of digging around. I learned that.”

When he came back to Manchester in 2010 to start filming Fresh Meat, in a mocked up student house in Whalley Range, something he’d do every summer for four years, he recalls being here for a few momentous occasions. “I remember the riots,” he says.

jack whitehall tour manchester

“I remember seeing some people looting a Lidl, and thinking ‘maybe the one advantage of looting is that you pick wherever you want’. I was here when Rangers had that European cup final and the whole city became a war zone. I was in Piccadilly, stuck in this ground zero of absolute carnage.”

He ‘fell in love with the city all over again’, he says, spending days and nights on end at King’s Arms in Salford, where a chunk of the series’ pub scenes were filmed. “It would switch back into being a pub as soon as we’d finish, so it was quite dangerous.”

“I’ve done drag on Canal Street with Belinda Scandal. I stayed at her house and she taught me how to do drag,” he says. “It was a great experience."

“I always used to open with a load of jokes about the Manchester Eye,” he says. “I was on it once with a friend. We thought it would be funny to moon the people in the Arndale Centre as we went down, failing to realise that it had about 20 rotations and then realising we’d committed far too early.

“We did it on the second rotation, so we had to go past the same people another 18 times on the Arndale viewing platform. Their look of disgust. Maybe that’s why they got rid of it. Complaints were made about a very pasty set of buttocks pressed against the window.”

So the city will always hold a special place in his heart, wherever he is. Which, increasingly often, is the US, or up until 2021 travelling the world with his father, acting agent Michael Whitehall on their hit Netflix series Travels With My Father.

Oh, and just in case you were wondering, The Rock is very nice. Whitehall appeared with him in the 2021 Disney movie Jungle Cruise, along with Emily Blunt, as sidekick foppish MacGregor Houghton (a sequel is reportedly in the offing).

“He’s great. Very nice man, very generous,” he says. “He did me over though on that film though. For the wrap present, he gave his stunt double the keys to a new truck. The guy started crying and everyone applauded. I bought my stunt double a candle.

“Dwayne didn’t give us the heads up to do our presents first. So I had to follow a truck with a single wick candle.”
