Commonly referred to as the ‘Pink City, thanks to its signature tericotta architecture, Jaipur is one of the most visited cities in India. Packed to bursting with architectural gems, from enchanting palaces to ancient forts, it’s easy to see why.  Exploring Jaipur felt like a scene straight from the movies, and if you are even remotely interested in Indian history it’s an essential addition to your India itinerary .

At the same time, If I were to be truly honest, I would say that we had a bit of a love/hate relationship with Jaipur. On the one hand, Jaipur is everything we dislike about big cities – loud, dirty, and horrendously busy. On the other, we were fascinated by the organised chaos, which makes Jaipur, well, Jaipur .

Anyhow, there is a lot to cover for spending 2 days in Jaipur, so let’s get to it!

Continuing your travels in Rajasthan? See our Rajasthan Itinerary , as well as articles on The Golden Triangle Route , Udaipur , Pushkar, and Jaisalmer to help plan your trip.

2 Days in Jaipur Itinerary

2 Day Jaipur Itinerary

A myriad of world heritage sights, bustling bazaars, extraordinary temples, and hidden gems make up the top places to visit in Jaipur in 2 days. Here is our suggested 2-day itinerary for Jaipur that ensures you’ll cover all of the city highlights.

Jaipur Itinerary – Day 1

From the cities most popular landmarks to a secret sunset spot, here is some inspiration for your first-day sightseeing in Jaipur.

Discover Jaipur on an Organised Tour

For a hassle-free experience where you need to do nothing but make a booking, the Jaipur Heritage Tour is the best-rated tour on the market. On this tour, you’ll visit the cities most famous landmarks, including Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal, and the Jaipur City Palace. There will be air-conditioned transportation provided to make your journey as comfortable as possible. And an English speaking guide will join you throughout the day. For more information and to make a booking, check out the link below.

Patrika Gate

Patrika Gate is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Jaipur. Located 30-minutes outside of the city centre, the gate serves as an entrance to the peaceful Jawahar Circle Gardens. At the same time, it is considered to be one of the most instagrammable places in India .

While Patrika Gate is just one of the many architectural marvels in Jaipur, the grandeur design is truly sensational. We were left mesmerised by the vibrant and intricate walkways, that serves as a true reflection of Rajasthani culture.

Keen photographers will be in their element sho0ting at the Patrika Gate. However, if you want to avoid the crowds, we suggest getting there pre-8am.

Afterwards, you can enjoy a relaxing stroll in the gardens.   Featuring a jogging track and workout machines, it’s a popular work out spot among locals. Other facilities include a park area and picnic spots, so it’s a nice place to visit if you have little ones.

For more information regarding this spot, you can check out our complete guide to Patrika Gate here .

PATRIKA GATE JAIPUR

Jaipur City Palace

When planning a trip to Jaipur, every guidebook, travel blog, and tour guide will tell you to visit the City Palace. And while we agree it is one of the most important places to see in Jaipur in 2 days, we wanted to share our honest opinion of the City Palace. Hopefully, this will help you decide if you’re going to pay the hefty entrance fee to visit.

First of all, there is no denying the sheer magnificence of the Palace Complex. A Unesco World Heritage Site and residence to the Royal Family, naturally there are no holds barred in its extravagance. On the other hand, we couldn’t help but feel it was a bit of a tourist trap.

After paying a hefty entrance fee compared to other city palaces in India (10 us$), we felt stung but hoped the price would be warranted. Unfortunately, this ticket only granted us basic access to the palace, and to upgrade would have been an extra 15 us$. It wasn’t a huge deal, but we were limited to certain areas of the palace grounds.

Anyhow, if you’re interested in the history of Jaipur or enjoy photography, you may want to consider adding the City Palace to your itinerary. But for backpackers on a budget, I recommend putting the entrance fee towards other tourist attractions in Jaipur. You can read our honest review of Jaipur City Palace here.

Entrance Fee: The entrance fee for foreigners to access the premises is 700 Indian Rupee – equivalent to around £8; however, if you want to access the unique museums and secret rooms, the price is 2000 IDR/£22.70.

JAIPUR CITY PALACE

The Jaipur Stepwell

Historically, stepwells were constructed to collect water for in times of drought in India. However, they do not only bear historical significance. The symmetrical design of the stepwells is another example of unique architecture that prevails throughout the country .

When we visited Jaipur Stepwell, we were thrilled to be the only ones there. After seeing some incredible posts on Instagram, we were surprised to learn that it is strictly prohibited to step foot inside the stepwell. Of course, like most things in India, a bribe to the guard would have soon eradicated this problem. But, we decided against it on this occasion.

Entrance Fee:  Free – That is, unless you want to bribe the guard to allow you on the steps.

Amber Palace

If you have to choose between the Jaipur City Palace and the Amber Palace, we recommend putting your money towards the latter. The Amber Palace was once residence to the Royal Family before they relocated to the City Palace. However, in our opinion, Amber Palace is the most impressive.

The grandeur structure, constructed from red sandstone and marble is easily one of the most beautiful places to visit in Jaipur in 2-days. Inside the palace grounds, you will find a series of pristine gardens, intricate courtyards, and spectacular photo opportunities, including a stunning mirrored room.

While we suggest making Amber Palace a priority on your Jaipur Itinerary, we have to ask that you don’t participate in elephant rides. Many tourists opt for elephant rides up to the palace entrance, without knowing the horrors behind animal tourism.  For more information, check out our guide to Amber Palace here .

Day Entry Fee  into Amber Palace is Rs. 500 for foreigners and Rs. 100 for nationals.

Night Entry Fee  into Amber Palace is Rs. 100 rupees for both foreigners and nationals.

*Budget Tip  – If you plan on visiting other attractions in Jaipur, you may want to consider purchasing a Tourist Composite Ticket. This allows you access to 10 attractions in Jaipur at a discounted rate.  Tickets can be purchased online .

*Travellers Tip – The Amber Palace is considered one of the best places to visit in Jaipur at night when dazzling light displays adorn the grounds. Alternatively, you can check out the light and sound show which focuses on the history of Jaipur. Tickets are available to buy online.

2 Days in Jaipur - Amber Palace

Amer Fort View Point

Hidden gems can be hard to come by in ever-popular Jaipur; however, the Amer Fort viewpoint offers a peaceful retreat from the congested city. Located across the lake from Amber Palace, several watchtowers boast a spectacular view of the fortress and city below. If you have the energy, you can also walk the perimeter of the fort in search of different vantage points.

I think we owe thanks for the viewpoints solitude, to the rather challenging stairs to reach it. It isn’t necessarily a long hike, but it’s strenuous enough to get the heart rate soaring. If you’re in good shape, you’ll reach the top within 15-20 minutes max. As well as being a place of serenity, the Amer Fort viewpoint is an underrated sunset spot in Jaipur.

Entrance Fee:  Free.

Jaipur Itinerary – Day 2

From temples teeming with monkeys, to a spectacular fort for sunset, let’s plan day 2 of your Jaipur Itinerary.

Jaipur Instagram Tour

Accompanied by an English speaking guide, this tour is perfect for travellers who may need assistance taking photos at busy Instagram locations in Jaipur. Bearing in mind that tripods are not allowed in most tourist attractions in Jaipur, this is a worth-while tour indeed. For more information and to make a booking, check out the link below.

Galta Ji (Monkey) Temple

Galta Ji Temple is probably one of the most intriguing temples we visited throughout our time in India.   While the official name is Galta Ji, most refer to it as Monkey Temple, due to the thousands of monkeys that occupy the grounds. As well as being a tourist hotspot, the temple complex is a sacred pilgrimage site for Hindu devotees.

Although the monkeys are a key attraction at this temple, what we loved most was the location. Built amidst a mountain pass, natural springs from the mountain replenish the temples 7 holy baths.  In these ‘kunds’ as they are known to locals, you will find pilgrims bathing in the sacred water, believed to cleanse away sins and revitalise the body.

It is recommended to visit the temple early If you want to avoid the crowds; however, we actually enjoyed watching all the spiritual ceremonies unfold.   I suggest heading up to the higher levels of the complex where you can observe from above and take it all in.  If you need more info, you can check out our guide to Jaipur’s monkey temple here .

Entrance Fee:  Free to enter, 50 Rupees camera charge

Explore the Pink City by Foot

Our favourite way to go Sightseeing in Jaipur was to travel on foot. Not only will you cover some of the best places to visit in Jaipur in 2 days, but you’ll get to immerse in the culture.  Jaipur is a fascinating city, and you’re in a land of extraordinary characters.  We loved interacting with the locals, sharing some stories over a chai before moving on to the next stop on our itinerary.

The only advice I do have is to be mindful when taking photos.  Too often we see tourists pushing their cameras into peoples faces without having communicated with them first.  The key is to be respectful and try to suss out the situation.  More often than not, the locals are only too happy to let you take a photo.  And you might find you take a lot more from the interaction than just a picture.

JAIPUR STREETS

Hawa Mahal, or the Palace of Winds, is the crown jewel of Jaipur.  Historically, the palace was built in the late 1800s, for female members of the Royal Family to observe the city without being seen.

The remarkable architecture of the complex includes 953 small windows, carved with intricate latticework and resembling the pattern of honeycomb. We for one were taken aback by its majestic appearance, and would, therefore, consider it to be one of the best places to visit in Jaipur in 2 days.

While many pay an entrance fee to explore inside the Hawa Mahal, we decided it was enough to admire from the outside. We would often head to one of the rooftop cafes across the road, where we could enjoy a drink and snap some clean photos.

*Travellers Tip  – For an underated sunset spot in Jaipur, head to Tattoo Cafe across the road!  The Hawa Mahal is also one of the best places to visit in Jaipur at night when the entire building is lit up.

Entrance Fee:  Tickets inside Hawa Mahal are 50 Rupees per person for Indians and 200 rupees per person for Foreigners.

Places to visit in Jaipur in 2 Days - Hawa Mahal

Brave the Bazaars

Experiencing the delirium of the city bazaars is one of the most exciting things to do in Jaipur.   The tantalising aroma of street food & chai. The burst of colour of traditional clothing and spices. The energy of the locals wheeling and dealing.  In short, walking among them is a show-stopping delight .

If you plan to buy at the bazaars, you will need to master the art of bargaining.   Haggling with the charismatic vendors can be great fun, and you will bag yourself some bargains; however, be sure to haggle sensibly and pay what you think is fair for the item.

If you want to take home some souvenirs, saris, gemstones, rugs, and puppets are all traditional items of Jaipur.  Be warned, it’s easy to get carried away! You can find some of the best markets in Jaipur located around the Hawa Mahal area.

Places to visit in Jaipur in 2 Days

Nahargarh AKA Tiger Fort

Nahargarh Fort is a tourist hotspot Jaipur. Located high in the Aravali mountains, the breathtaking fortress provides an unrivalled view over the bustling city below. The fort is famed for being an architectural wonder, as well as being one of the best sunset spots in Jaipur.

Historically, along with Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort, Nahargarh helped form a defence wall around the old Royal City. The name ‘Nahargarh’ translates to Tiger Fort in English, so I can only assume wild tigers once roamed the same mountains. As you sit atop the walls of the old fort, it’s easy to picture the scene. After all, Jaipur was once a barren desert city.

It has to be said, the only advantage of the pollution in Jaipur is that it makes for an epic sunset. The sun appeared hazy and ethereal as the sky set on fire in pink and orange hues. By this time, people were clambering atop the walls of the fort to get a photo. Security guards patrol the area asking people to come down; however, it doesn’t prevent people from getting a picture at one of the most  Insta-worthy locations in Jaipur .

If you visit during the opening hours of 10 am and 6 pm, you can access the attractions inside the fort.  These include a palace, sculpture gallery, and wax museum.  Otherwise, you can explore the perimeter of the fort for sunrise or sunset. See our guide to Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur for more info.

Entrance Fee:  200 Rupees for foreigners, 50 rupees for Indians, discounted rates for students.

Other Places to Visit in Jaipur in 2 Days

While the above itinerary should keep you busy over your 2 Days in Jaipur, you may have some spare time or wish to make some adjustments. With this in mind, here are some other exciting things to do in the city.

Albert Hall Museum

Another hidden gem in Jaipur is the Albert Hall Museum.  Many are unaware that this museum even exists, but if you are a history buff it’s worth adding to your Jaipur itinerary.  The museum houses a collection of historical artifacts, and in true Jaipur style, the architecture is sensational!

Gatore Ki Chatriyan Cenotaphs

Just a short journey outside the center of Jaipur, you’ll find a collection of royal tombs where Jaipur’s maharajas are laid to rest.  While it may be lesser-heard-of site in Jaipur, this serene and peaceful spot is truly worth a visit. The name Gatore comes from the Hindi phrase “Gaye ka Thor” which means “resting place of the departed souls”.

World Trade Park

The World Trade Park shopping centre could not be any further from the traditional architecture of Jaipur; however, you will no doubt be just as impressed by its futuristic design.   As well as an abundance of high-end shops, the centre incorporates a cinema and an innovative indoor food street.  If you are spending more than 2 Days in Jaipur, we highly recommend you check it out.

Celebrate Diwali

One of the most significant and magical festivals to be celebrated in India, Diwali is known as the Hindu festival of light.  Held annually during the months of October or November, Jaipur is one of the best cities in the country to celebrate.

We were fortunate enough to be in Jaipur for Diwali and it was an unforgettable experience.  The city comes alive with the festivitie.  Houses, shops, and streets are illuminated in bright lights.  This is to signify ‘light over darkness’ or ‘good over evil’.  Think Christmas, but in India, so it’s a lot more wild!

Best Places to Eat in Jaipur

With so many places to visit in Jaipur in 2 days, you can expect to leave your hotel before sunrise and return after sunset.  To avoid burning out, it pays to eat well and keep hydrated! At the same time, food is a huge part of the Jaipur experience, so check out our favourite restaurants for some of the best food in the city!

Best For Lunch: Tapri the Teahouse $$

For a classy lunch without breaking the bank, we highly recommend this trendy rooftop establishment.  The extensive menu includes a fusion of cuisines, and we couldn’t help but get food envy everytime a new dish came out of the kitchen. Not only that, but the atmosphere and service were second to none.

Best For Sunset: Tattoo Cafe $

Located across the way from Hawa Mahal, this cafe is the perfect spot to escape the bustling streets of Jaipur. While we would enjoy coming here at any time of day, we particularly loved coming here for sunset.  Watching the sun disappear behind one of the most iconic buildings in India was a surreal experience.  And if you hang around until it’s dark, you’ll get to experience the palace illuminated. Oh, and the food and drinks are pretty good too!

Best For Dinner: 25 Degrees East $$

We enjoyed some of the best food of our India trip  here, and while it is a little on the pricy side, you won’t regret the momentary splurge.

Best For Street Food: Anywhere $

Many visitors are anxious about trying street food in India;  however, it’s a huge part of the experience and you should try your best to get on board.  Concerns about getting sick are valid; however, there are steps you can take to avoid the dreaded Delhi belly!  You can find street food stalls all over Jaipur, and it’s the cheapest way to indulge in the delicious cuisuine.

Tips & Advice for Travelling Jaipur

Jaipur is a vibrant, wild, and exciting place to travel. At the same time, it can be overwhelming, confusing, and even sometimes scary. So here are some travel tips and advice that we accumulated during our time in Jaipur. Hopefully, it will help ensure a fun, safe, and stress-free trip of a lifetime.

Best Time to Visit Jaipur

The best time to visit Jaipur is during the Indian Winter, which runs from October to February. During this time you can expect perfect weather for sightseeing – Ie. The temperatures are cooler, and there is very little rain. It’s also the period where many festivals take place in India such as Diwali. If you are sensitive to the heat, you may wish to keep mornings and late afternoons free outdoor activities, as the lunchtime hours get incredibly hot all year round. It’s advisable to avoid Rajasthan altogether during the months of Summer or Monsoon.

Getting Around in Jaipur

If you’ve got just  2 days in Jaipur, the easiest and cheapest way to get around is by scooter.   The cost is around Rs. 500 for 24hrs; however, the roads of Jaipur can be intimidating for even the most experienced driver.

Another option is to get around on tuk-tuks.   This can be cost-effective if you are in a group, but be sure to haggle as the drivers are opportunists when it comes to tourists.

There is also a reliable public bus network in place in Jaipur. You can check the city of Jaipur website for more information on  bus routes in Jaipur .

Our favourite way to get around Jaipur is by using the Ola Taxi app. Similar to Uber, taxis are ordered directly through the app. Not only can you book single trips, but it’s an affordable way to hire a driver for the entire day!

Tourist Composite Tickets

If you plan on getting around all of the best places to visit in Jaipur in 2 Days, you may want to consider purchasing a tourist composite ticket. For a discounted rate, the tourist composite tickets allows you access to 10 attractions in Jaipur, including Hawa Mahal, Amber Palace, and Nahargarh Fort.  Tickets can be purchased online  here.

Wherever you go in India, it is important that you dress appropriately.  It is recommended that female travellers respect the local tradition of covering shoulders and legs from the knee upwards.  Not only is it respectful, but it will help to avoid unwanted attention.

The dress code for men is a little more relaxed; however, it is recommended to avoid revealing vests or tank top.

Safety in Jaipur

The topic regarding safety in Jaipur and India, in general, is as complex as the country itself. Every individual has a different experience, and while there are many horror stories, we can honestly say we encountered nothing overly negative ourselves. By that, I mean we were not the victims of crime, theft, physical/verbal abuse and the like.

Having said that, there were times when we felt uncomfortable and scared. Sometimes it was warranted, other times, it was not. You see, the biggest issue for us travelling India as a lesbian couple wasn’t even our sexuality, it was our gender. Being a foreign woman in India arouses a lot of attention. And like I said earlier, what we recognise as socially acceptable behaviour is not necessarily the same in Indian culture. For example, staring, taking photos without asking, or invasion of personal space can come across as intimidating, even when it’s not.

So girls, be prepared to carry yourself confidently and don’t be afraid to say something should anybody cross the line. Unfortunately, there are many reports of women being groped by local men. If you find yourself in this position, it’s best to call him out, as other locals will step in to help you and probably give him a slap while they’re at it.

Otherwise, the biggest threat to tourists is petty theft crimes such as pickpocketing and bag snatching. We suggest keeping your belongings close to you at all times and use a small padlock or compartmental bag to keep your valuables safe. When travelling at night, avoid being alone in parks or dark areas.

Finally, It pays to make yourself aware of the  common scams in India , so in turn, you can avoid them.

Travel Insurance

With that, don’t even think about going to Jaipur without travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. If the unlikely event that something goes wrong, you’ll want the best cover money can buy.

For this reason, we always recommend Heymondo for travel insurance. They are affordable, offer a variety of packages and get 5% discount using our link! (discount applicable for non-American citizens)

If you need further convincing, read our article on  why you need travel insurance .

Most tourist attractions in India forbid the use of tripods within the grounds.  Expect to be reprimanded by security guards if you attempt to use one.

Alcohol, Drugs, & Parties in Jaipur

If you’re looking to party, Jaipur isn’t the place. You’ll want to get yourself to the likes of  Goa , Manali, or  Hampi . But if you enjoy a few drinks of an evening time, alcohol is easy to find at many bars and restaurants. Just check in advance so that you’re not disappointed when you go to order.

The local drug of choice is, of course, Bhang. For those of you who don’t know what Bhang is, it is an edible form of cannabis. You’ll find Bhang shops all over Rajasthan, selling Bhang Lassis – a tasty beverage mixed with milk, sugar, and fruits. Or alternatively bhang cakes or cookies. Bhang forms a big part of ancient Hindu tradition, and they believe it cures many ailments. It produces a similar effect as smoking cannabis; however, it can last longer and also take a lot longer to kick in. If it is your  first time experimenting with Bhang , it is worth educating yourself on the effects before partaking.

TOP THINGS TO DO JAISALMER BHANG COOKIES

Social Etiquette in Jaipur

Jaipur is one of the holiest and most socially conservative cities in all of India. It’s important to keep in mind that what might be socially acceptable in your home country, is likely to be viewed entirely different here. Thankfully, most Indians are forgiving toward foreigners to a certain extent; however, to avoid unwanted attention and embarrassment, it’s good to know the dos and don’ts. In which case, I recommend this article regarding  social etiquette in India , which includes dress codes, table manners, temple etiquette etc.

At the same time, you’ll likely be surprised by some of the aspects of Indian culture. And in all honestly, you’ll probably be offended from time to time. But again, it’s important to remember that the culture is entirely different from the western world, and embracing the unique Indian culture is all part and parcel of the experience.

Stay Connected in Jaipur

If, like us, you rely on the internet when you travel (let’s face it, who doesn’t anymore), we have the perfect solution. After coming home to too many hefty phone bills and buying countless international sim cards, we were desperate for an affordable solution.

That’s when we discovered TravelWifi.  TravelWifi’s portable pocket wifi  allows us to quickly and securely connect when we need it the most. Click the link for more information on coverage, packages, and the latest offers.

Otherwise, you can pick up a local sim card at most major airports. We used Vodaphone and it was reliable throughout our stay. You will need your passport and visa to register for a sim card and it can take up to 48 hours to activate.

A love hate relationship for sure! It’s a place that stressed me out a lot while I was there (and I’ve been to 75 countries), but it’s still intriguing and I wanted to keep exploring. I would definitely recommend someone travel other places in Asia first, but definitely dive into India when you’re ready, and this is a great write up to help guide the way!

City Palace Jaipur

About City Palace Jaipur

The City Palace Jaipur is one of the most famous tourist attractions situated in the old part of Jaipur. It was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II from 1729 to 1732. The Palace has different parts like courtyards, buildings and gardens including the Chandra Mahal and the Mubarak Mahal. Other parts of the Palace include Mukut Mahal, Maharani’s Palace, Shri Govind Dev Temple, Diwan-i-Am and Diwan-i-Khas. There’s also a museum called Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Which displays special handcrafted items and holds a collection of royal items from the past raja-maharajas.

The front of the City Palace is carefully designed with a mix of Mughal, Rajput and European styles. The outer wall was built by Jai Singh II as the palace has gone through changes over time, some even from the early 20th century. The red and pink sandstone make the palace even more beautiful. There are three gates, out of which two gates i.e. Virendra Pol and Udai pol are open to the public, while the Tripolia Gate is only for the royal family.

City Palace of Jaipur used to be the house of the royal family but it got split into two parts. One Part has museums and a courtyard for people to visit and the other part is where the royal family still lives.

History & Architecture Of City Palace Jaipur

The City Palace Jaipur was commissioned by Sawai Jai Singh II, who led the Kachwaha Rajput Clan and is also the founder of Jaipur. He ruled over the areas of Jaipur and Amer for centuries. He established Jaipur City and City Palace of Jaipur after he decided to shift his capital from Amer to Jaipur in the 17th century. The main reason behind shifting of capital was increasing population and water shortage problem in Amer.

Sawai Jai Singh II began building the outer wall of City Palace from 1729 to 1732 which ran over several acres of area throughout the city. Over the decades, various other structures were built by his successors which added charm to the palace. Therefore, different buildings and courtyards were added to the palace at different timestamps. The last ruler who held the throne in this Palace was Raja Man Singh II.

The architectural style of City Place is a perfect blend of Rajput and Mughal style and The City Palace was built using red and pink sandstone. The palace has vast courtyards surrounded by several arched smaller palaces. The architect of this beautiful palace is Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, who designed the Palace according to the Vastushastra. The City Palace has three gates, ‘Tripolia Gate’, ‘Udai Pol’ & ‘Virendra Pol’. The entrances of the Palace are intricately decorated with the finest handiwork. The Murals, mosaics, meticulous stonework and honeycomb windows make a perfect blend of design, art, color and culture in the Palace.

The City Palace Jaipur is open for tourists and they can explore it on their own or with a guided tour. This well-maintained and beautifully designed Palace is among the top attractions in the city. Additionally, it also serves as the residence for the royal family of Jaipur.

Things To See Inside City Palace Jaipur

  • Diwan-e-Aam: Diwan-e-Aam also known as Sabha Niwas, is a hall of the public audience. It was used as the hall for holding public meetings with Maharajas of Jaipur. The hall of the Diwan-e-Aam has many arched openings held up by marble columns and a well painted plaster ceiling. There is Jaali on one side of the hall which royal women might have used to see the things going in the hall. This allowed them to be part of the outside world while still following the purdah tradition.
  • Diwan-e-Khas:  Diwan-e-Khas, also known as Sarvato Bhadra, was used as the private audience hall of the Royal King. The ceiling of the hall is painted in red and gold and has large crystal chandeliers. The hall also has two huge silver vessels or Gangajalis with a capacity of 4000 litres. It is believed that Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II used to carry the holy water of the Ganga on his trips to England. The hall also has a stall for buying local handicrafts or traditional Rajasthani dresses, Handwritten manuscripts of Hindu Sculptures, ancient texts, rugs and the Royal throne ‘Takht-e-Rawal’. The best places to visit in Jaipur showcase the royalty of Rajasthan — and you don't have to walk far to see many of the top attractions. Start by touring City Palace , a nearly 300-year-old palace with special courtyards, structures, gardens, and temples.

Just next door is Jantar Mantar, a centuries-old attraction with giant astronomical instruments commissioned by the founder of the city. A 10-minute walk from here brings you to Hawa Mahal , a red-and-pink sandstone structure. Its distinctive lattice design allowed royal women to get a peek at public life while remaining unseen in the 19th century.

City Palace in Jaipur

City Palace has stood at the heart of the Old City of Jaipur for nearly three centuries, shortly after Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II decided to relocate his court from the city of Amber. Protected by huge guard walls, the fairy-tale-like structure is still the home of the city's modern-day royal family and endures as one of the top places to visit in Jaipur.

City Palace is more than a sand-colored regal abode — it's a sprawling complex of buildings built around a series of landscaped garden courtyards overlooking Jaipur and Lake Palace. The entire property is a stunning display of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture.

The current occupants reside in the most eye-catching building, the Chandra Mahal , an elegant structure with curved eaves and domed rooftops. Each of its seven stories features an entirely different style. The ground floor is included in the price of admission, but you'll need to book a private tour to go upstairs.

Other noteworthy places for sightseeing at City Palace include the Mubarak Mahal (Welcome Palace), which contains displays of dazzling costumes and textiles; the Armoury, a museum-like space dedicated to preserving finely crafted daggers and swords; Pritam Niwas Chowk (Peacock Courtyard), which has mesmerizing doorways painted to look like the feathers of its namesake bird; and Diwan-i-Am (Hall of Public Audience), which showcases the palace's exquisite collection of miniature paintings.

After exploring the palace, check out the Friends of the Museum Bazaar . It has some of Jaipur's highest quality souvenirs (with equally high prices).

Address: Tulsi Marg, Gangori Bazaar, J.D.A. Market, Pink City, Jaipur

Jantar Mantar

At first glance, Jantar Mantar may look to be nothing more than a bunch of larger-than-life abstract sculptures. But this is not an art gallery — this attraction contains a special collection of astronomical tools started by Rajput ruler Jai Singh II to measure the heavens nearly 300 years ago.

Each of the 20 or so structures at this UNESCO World Heritage Site serves a distinctive purpose. The observatory's massive sundial, known as Samrat Yantra , is particularly striking. At 27 meters tall, it casts a huge shadow that accurately measures time down to two seconds.

The elaborate Jai Prakash also tracks the passing of time, using the shadow of a metal plate suspended above a sunken bowl-like structure. The ingenious Rama Yantra, a circular walled structure, can locate the precise positions of celestial objects. Other tools at the observatory can track stars and even predict eclipses.

Hot tip: It's worth hiring a private guide at Jantar Mantar if you want to learn how each of the structures works.

Address: Gangori Bazaar, J.D.A. Market, Pink City, Jaipur

Hawa Mahal

If you had any preconceived notions about how the buildings in Jaipur look, they probably came from Hawa Mahal (Palace of Breeze). A top place to visit in Jaipur, this structure has all of the distinctive architectural features that appear in postcards of the city, from the salmon-pink, honeycombed facade, built to resemble the crown of the Hindu god Krishna, to the geometric accents and rows of tiny windows.

The landmark was built in 1799 to allow royal ladies to watch festivals on the street without being seen by the public. Its 953 windows allow plenty of breezes to pass through, making it an ideal summer palace (and the perfect spot to get relief from Rajasthan's oppressive heat today).

Tourists can learn about the history of the sandstone structure at the palace's small museum — the ceremonial armor collection is particularly interesting. You can also wander the narrow hallways that run throughout the palace. Don't miss the colorful glasswork in windows and doorways, which cast an otherworldly glow on chambers throughout Hawal Mahal.

Address: Hawa Mahal Rd., Badi Choupad, J.D.A. Market, Pink City, Jaipur

Amber Fort

Jaipur is home to one of India's most-visited forts: Amber Fort. Built in the year 1592, the sandstone and marble monolith stands atop a small hill roughly 20 minute's driving distance northeast of the center of Jaipur. This attraction is best known for being a pristine example of Rajasthani architecture.

Getting to Amber Fort typically involves a short uphill hike that's well worth the effort. It's decked out with intricate patterns of inlaid marble in nearly every color of the rainbow. The fort is laid out into four separate sections, each of which has a spectacular garden courtyard outside. While you'd never know it from above, you can actually explore the fort's underground tunnels , some of which have been restored.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site has a fascinating history of legends, betrayals, and romance — but the best way for tourists to hear these stories is to hire a private guide at the Amber Fort.

Address: Devisinghpura, Amer, Jaipur

Albert Hall Museum

When English writer Rudyard Kipling visited the Albert Hall Museum in Jaipur, he wrote that it was a "rebuke to all other museums in India from Calcutta downwards." That's high praise coming from the son of a curator, and fitting for this renowned institution.

The oldest museum in Rajasthan, the Albert Hall Museum boasts an extensive collection of art and historically significant artifacts. Come for the Egyptian mummy ; stay to see antique coins from different periods in India's history, charming permanent exhibits of miniature paintings, 18th-century costumes worn by members of different castes, and a peculiar collection of 19th-century clay figures demonstrating all the yoga poses.

Hot tip: Visit the museum at night, when multicolored lights brighten the exterior of the alluring building.

Address: Museum Road, Ram Niwas Garden, Kailash Puri, Adarsh Nagar, Jaipur

Birla Mandir

In a city that seems to be dipped from top to bottom in pink, the stark white marble Birla Mandir stands out — big time. The Hindu temple pays tribute to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and purity, and Vishnu, one of the religion's main deities. It's one of the best places to visit in Jaipur for tourists and Hindu devotees alike.

The marvelous structure exudes a quiet, peaceful vibe, offering just the right atmosphere to appreciate fine marble carvings, shrines to gods, and gorgeous sunset views. While you don't need more than 30 minutes to get a sense of the space, the experience will prove to be a restorative break from a day of sightseeing.

Address: Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg, Tilak Nagar, Jaipur

Nahargarh Fort

When it comes to sightseeing around Jaipur, the views don't get better than what you'll find at Nahargarh Fort. Also known as Tiger Fort , this nearly 300-year-old attraction overlooks the entire city from atop the Aravalli Hills — a prime location for the structure to defend the city against enemies many years ago.

More than just a formidable barrier though, this fort also contains Madhavendra Bhawan , a summer destination for royalty. The sumptuous Rajasthani building features a dozen identical boudoirs for the queens, which all connect to the king's suite through mural-filled corridors.

Tourists can also explore the fort's wax museum and sculpture park. And if you're feeling hungry, swing by one of the fort's many restaurants to tuck into traditional Indian cuisine.

Address: Krishna Nagar, Brahampuri, Jaipur

Galta Ji

Sources of water can be few and far between in the desert state of Rajasthan. So it's no wonder that when people discovered a natural spring in a mountain pass in the Aravalli Hills , they honored it by building the Hindu temple Galta Ji.

Nestled between cliffs, the temple features a few sacred water tanks, some with modest fountains, as well as frescoes that tell tales about the Hindu god Krishna.

Galta Ji is also one of the best places to visit in Jaipur if you want to see monkeys . It's home to hundreds of macaques and langurs (hence its nickname, "The Monkey Temple"). Daring tourists might opt to buy a handful of peanuts at the gate to tempt the monkeys, but you're better off just watching the rambunctious creatures from a distance.

Indian bracelets with diamonds and jewels

When the founders of the beloved Indian jewelry brand Amrapali Jewels started collecting antique jewelry in the late 1970s, they realized that some of these one-of-a-kind treasures deserved to be preserved and displayed. And so the Amrapali Museum was born, instantly becoming one of the top places to visit in Jaipur.

The jewelry museum in Jaipur features two full floors of glistening jewels and objects from its 4,000-piece collection, showcasing the vast range of Indian craftsmanship.

The displays show just how seriously Rajasthani people take their gold, silver, and precious gems. Among the jewels, you'll see silver bands for horses' legs, a chariot fully covered in silver, embellished shoe covers, and a glorious crown for a groom from Himachal Pradesh.

While these pieces are for display only, there's an extensive range of necklaces, bracelets, and other wearables available for purchase at the Museum Shop.

Address: Ground Floor, K, 14/B, Ashok Marg, Panch Batti, C Scheme, Ashok Nagar, Jaipur

For much of history, Rajasthan's most important handicrafts and works of art lived in private collections that were unavailable for viewing by the majority of the public. That all changed when the Government of Rajasthan opened the Museum of Legacies in 2017.

Housed in a two-centuries-old mansion, this tourist attraction showcases an assortment of Indian embroidery, giant Rajasthani puppets, Pichwai paintings, and much more.

Don't miss the magnificent marble latticework. The amount of swirling detail the artisans were able to carve from such a strong, hard stone is hypnotic.

Address: Kishanpole Bazar Road, Modikhana, Jaipur

Jal Mahal on Man Sagar Lake

One look at the Jal Mahal, and you might think you're seeing a mirage. The graceful palace seems to float atop the twinkling Man Sagar Lake — a calm sight compared to the rest of the frenzied city.

While it appears to have just one story, the Water Palace has four other levels submerged beneath a reservoir. The government no longer allows tourists to visit the site, but you can stroll a pathway around the lake to catch gorgeous views of the attraction. At night, it's lit up in all its glory, casting a golden, glowing reflection on the water.

Rajasthani puppets for sale in Jaipur

Jaipur is a mecca for souvenirs. Markets in the Pink City brim with everything from costume jewelry and precious gemstones to embroidered textiles, cobalt blue pottery, and Rajasthani puppets.

For a no-hassle shopping experience, head to the Rajasthali Handicrafts Emporium across from Ajmeri Gate. The government-run shop sells high-quality traditional handicrafts, like blue pottery decorated with yellow flowers, sets of wooden carvings depicting Rajasthani characters, and hand-printed saris. The prices you see on these items are fixed, so while you won't be able to negotiate a discount, you can also avoid the headache of bargaining.

Johari Bazar is a jewelry lover's paradise. The market glitters from top to bottom with dozens of shops selling everything from costume jewelry to fine silver and gold. No matter your budget, you'll find something beautiful to take home from here.

Finally, don't leave Jaipur without a quick shopping trip to Bapu Bazar. Located just a few blocks southwest of Johari Bazaar, the tourist-favorite market is chock full of handcrafted trinkets, locally made textiles, bedazzled slippers, and souvenirs galore.

Jaigarh Fort

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Amber Fort, Jaigarh Fort is one of the best places to visit in Jaipur if you want a remarkable view and up-close access to historical artifacts. It's best known for housing the Jaivana Cannon, which was considered to be the world's largest cannon on wheels when it was built in the early 18th century.

Visiting the attraction gives tourists an appreciation for the fort's role in keeping Jaipur and the surrounding area safe from invaders. Spread over a range of three kilometers, the fort features thick sandstone walls and a series of subterranean passages. It's thought to be the strongest of Jaipur's forts.

Beyond fortified, though, the fort was also an opulent place when it was in use. You can still see its majestic palace complex and intricate architecture on tours today.

Panna Meena ka Kund

Another one of the popular things to do in Amer after visiting the Amber Fort is taking a 10-minute walk south to visit Panna Meena ka Kund, a stepwell that dates back to the 16th century.

Locals used to come to this spot to fill their pots with water for rituals and household chores. It was also the go-to place to cool off from the intense desert heat.

Today, the attraction's primary purpose is as a backdrop for tourist photos — and for good reason. Its golden yellow hue and labyrinthine steps, which look like they were plucked from one of M.C. Escher's artworks, make for postcard-worthy images . But as tempting as it might be to enter the beautiful attraction for a selfie, Panna Meena ka Kund does not allow visitors to go inside, so keep your photo shoot to the exterior only.

Akshardham Temple in Jaipur at night

Akshardham Temple might look like an ancient site, but don't be fooled — this attraction was built in the 21st century as part of a series of 10 temples dedicated to the Hindu god Narayana (a form of Lord Vishnu).

Still, the 23-acre religious complex is an impressive place to spend the afternoon. The white marble and pink sandstone temple showcases the intricacy of Hindu architecture with its stone carvings of Hindu deities, animals, and scenery. Step inside to see massive pure-gold statues and pristine paintings. There's also a peaceful garden courtyard brimming with lush plants and a musical fountain just outside.

Address: Vidyut Nagar, Vaishali Nagar, Chitrakoot, Jaipur

Elephant Festival in Jaipur

Attending an annual festival is one of the top things to do in Jaipur, and the city's calendar is chock full of events.

In January, you can watch colorful creations fly through the sky during the International Kite Festival and get books signed by famous authors at the Jaipur Literature Festival.

The city hosts its Elephant Festival, during which the tusked animals are painted with Indian motifs and dressed in extravagant costumes, in February or March (depending on the moon cycle). And the two-day Teej Festival, a celebration that honors the union of Shiva and the goddess Parvati, occurs in July or August.

Swargasuli Tower, also called Isar Lat, is one of the tallest buildings in Jaipur. It stands 42 meters (140 feet) above ground and was built in 1749 as a victory memorial. It is possible to climb to the top of the octagonal structure for spectacular views of the Pink City, or you can admire the architecture from the ground.

ALBERT HALL MUSEUM – Time & Entrance Ticket

Albert Hall Museum

Albert Hall Museum, one of the oldest and most prestigious museums in Jaipur, is a wonderful place to visit. It was named in honor of King Albert Edward VII of England, since he inaugurated it. It set beyond the original walled city. It was constructed by Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob and inaugurated sometime in the late 19th century.

Maharaja Ram Singh wanted the building to serve as a town hall, but the next king- Maharaja Madho Singh II- decided to keep it as a museum. In this museum, Jaipur's cultural heritage is preserved. A few of the most impressive exhibits include the artifacts and oil paintings, water color portraits and landscapes, items made of ivory and stone, as well as mesmerizing crystal sculptures.

Moreover, the fusion of Indo-Saracenic culture makes this museum in itself a very significant monument to view.

Jaipur Attraction Composite Admission Ticket

Consider buying a composite ticket, which gives you entry to  Amber Fort, Albert Hall Museum, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, Isarlat and Narhargarh Fort  and is valid for two days from the time of purchase.

A separate composite ticket (Indian/foreigner ₹190/500 ; two days) includes entry to  the City Palace, Royal Gaitor, Cenotaphs of the Maharanis, and Jaigarh ; for foreigners, this ticket is included with entry to the City Palace.

Jaipur Itinerary — 1 or 2 Days in the Pink City

By: Author Emily

Posted on Last updated: November 27, 2023

Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and the state’s most populous city. It’s nicknamed the Pink City after the color of its buildings, though today most appear to be more rusty red in color. The city’s interesting architecture and mountainside forts has earned Jaipur its place on the Golden Triangle — a popular tourist circuit that also includes Delhi and Agra. This Jaipur Itinerary will help you see the best of Jaipur in just a day or two.

In this post

Here’s what we’re covering in this post. We’ll start with some general Jaipur travel planning information and then get into the itinerary itself.

What is Jaipur like?

Plan your visit to jaipur, getting around jaipur.

  • About this itinerary

Day 1 — Mountain Forts & Palaces

  • Day 2 — Jaipur City

More things to do in Jaipur

I had prepared myself for Delhi to be the assault on my senses, but it was really Jaipur that hit me hard in that way. It was loud and fast and bright. Jaipur was exactly like how I pictured India to be before I ever stepped foot in the country.

jaipur tourist ticket

The streets were filled with a mess of colorfully decorated rickshaws, and all the sounds and smells that go with that. There were street vendors all over, offering up hot brewed chai or piles of fresh produce. Brightly colored fabrics and florals hung from every shop window and the twisty look of Hindi script made even the most basic signs look beautiful.

Jaipur actually reminded us a lot of Hanoi. It was a combination of the hectic-yet-fluid traffic, the hole-in-the-wall shops grouped by category, and the sidewalks that were as much for walking as they were for parking motorbikes.

jaipur tourist ticket

Jaipur is the name of the city, but also the district that includes other small towns nearby. Some of Jaipur’s incredible forts and palaces are located in Amer, which is a hillside town in the district of Jaipur. (FYI – In this post, I’ll use the term Jaipur to refer to the entire district.)

Jaipur City proper is separated into two parts. The Walled City of Jaipur (or the old city) is the historical center of Jaipur. It’s surrounded by city walls that were built in the 1700s to protect the city and still stand today. This area of the city was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019 and is where major sites like the City Palace and Hawa Mahal are located. Everything outside of the city is considered to be new Jaipur (or just Jaipur).

jaipur tourist ticket

Jaipur is the 10th largest city India with over 4 million people. It’s a large city, but not a metropolitan one. Sure, there’s a McDonald’s, but there aren’t many chain restaurants or stores and the people of Jaipur tend to be quite conservative. Even without skyscrapers and high rise apartments, it has a population density somewhere between that of Chicago and Paris.

Overall, Jaipur is a bustling city that still captures the charm of its historical roots.

In this section, we’ll get into some of the practical information for planning a trip to Jaipur. Some of this information, like the visa requirements and weather, is very similar to the corresponding sections in our Delhi Itinerary .

jaipur tourist ticket

India Visa requirements

To get to Jaipur, you’ll first need to get into India, which requires a Tourist e-Visa. The Tourist e-Visa is required for visitors from almost every country and has three available durations (30 days, 1 year, 5 years).

You can apply for an Indian Tourist e-Visa online. You will need a valid passport, passport photo, and credit card to pay the application fee. The application fee varies based on your nationality, but most will pay $10 or $25 USD for a 30-day visa.

In most cases, this is a quick and easy process, but don’t put it off to the last minute. It can take longer if complications come up.

Recommended vaccines

India does not have any vaccine mandates (unless you’re traveling from a Yellow Fever country), but you might want to get a few before traveling there. In the United States, the CDC recommends the following vaccines for travelers going to India. Other countries may have different guidelines.

( Disclaimer : We are not doctors and this is not medical advice. Consult your physician or a travel clinic for professional recommendations.)

  • Hepatitis A
  • Yellow Fever
  • Cholera (not prominent in Jaipur)
  • Malaria (not prominent in Jaipur)
  • Japanese Encephalitis (not prominent in Jaipur)

We were already up to date with most of these vaccines including: Covid, Hep A, Hep B and measles. We also already received Yellow Fever vaccines before traveling to Colombia a few years ago. (I wouldn’t have gotten it just for this trip.) Based on our travel plans (Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur, Agra), we weren’t at high risk for cholera, malaria or Japanese Encephalitis. That left us with Rabies and Typhoid to consider.

If it was just us adults, we probably would have skipped both. But we are responsible parents traveling with our 2-year-old, so we had a travel consultation with our pediatrician. She actually didn’t strongly recommend any additional vaccines other than Hep A, which we were due for anyway.

We decided to skip the rabies vaccine. There are some stray dogs in Jaipur (not nearly as many as Delhi), but we assumed we would be able to stay pretty clear of them. Typhoid spreads through contaminated water, though, and that seemed like a risk that would be harder to avoid completely. We decided to get the Typhoid vaccine for all of us.

The Typhoid vaccine is expensive. It costs around $150 and most insurance doesn’t cover it. (Our insurance covered children but not adults.) It’s also really hard to find. In many cases you have to go to a travel clinic to get it, which can sometimes cost another few hundred dollars. Some CVS locations carry it, especially in major cities, so be sure to check there.

How to get to Jaipur

If you’re going to Jaipur from either Delhi or Agra as part of the Gold Triangle, you will have the choice of train or car. Jaipur does have an airport, but once you consider the amount of time it takes to get through security at Indian airports (particularly Delhi) and the amount of time it takes to get from the airport into the actual city, it’s not usually worth it.

In our experience, the trains in India were efficient and mostly ran on time. If you’re booking a train, we suggest using the third-party service 12Go Asia . We used them to get around all of Southeast Asia, and again relied on them to get us around India. They make booking easy and their customer service is incredible.

jaipur tourist ticket

Indian trains are famously crowded. In our experience, this was accurate, but it was limited to certain travel classes. Be sure to book one of the following fare classes to avoid overcrowded cabins and ensure you have a reserved seat and AC. We recommend booking the highest class available within these options.

  • CC, AC Chair Class (open cabin)
  • 3A, AC 3-tier Sleeper (open cabin)
  • 2A, AC 2-tier Sleeper (open cabin)
  • 1A, First Class Sleeper (closed berth)

There are a few different trains that go to Jaipur from both Delhi and Agra. The fastest train from Delhi to Jaipur takes about 4.5 hours and costs $12 – $22 USD. The fastest train from Agra to Jaipur takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes and costs about $10 USD.

jaipur tourist ticket

Alternatively, you can hire a driver to take you to Jaipur. The drive is roughly the same amount of time as the train, but the obvious advantage is that you have control over the timing. A car will also get you point-to-point, and you won’t have to worry about any additional transit time or expenses to go between the trains stations and your hotels.

We hired a driver from Delhi to Jaipur through Bagga India Tour and it cost $141 USD. Drivers from Agra to Jaipur typically start around 3,000 rupees ($35 USD). You can save some money if you hire a driver for the entire Golden Triangle versus just one let, but we were taking a detour to Udaipur so that wasn’t going to work for us.

Where to stay in Jaipur

There are two main locations for hotels in Jaipur. You can either stay in Jaipur City proper in the area around the old city or up by Amer Fort in the town of Amer.

Jaipur City Palace is the center of the old city. There are a variety of hotel options along the main street that runs from City Palace up to Jal Mahal (the water palace) and then more options south/southwest of City Palace. There’s a good chance you’re going to need a car or tuk tuk to get around to most places, so pick your hotel more so by quality than by the specific location within Jaipur City.

We personally stayed at Jai Mahal Palace , which is pretty far from the old city but near the train station. It’s a really nice hotel built inside an old palace. We didn’t love the service here (or all the pigeon poo by the pool), but all things considered it was a very nice hotel.

jaipur tourist ticket

Alternatively, you can stay in Amer. This town at the base of Amer Fort seemed very walkable and had many hotels, restaurants and shops. It’s a hike from the rest of Jaipur, but it looked like it had a fun backpacker energy to it.

How long to stay in Jaipur

You probably don’t need a ton of time in Jaipur. It’s a big city that has some interesting things to see and do, but you can definitely fit it into a short stay. Honestly, I’d say that one full day is enough to see most of Jaipur at a fast pace and two days is good if you want to do it slowly.

We personally spent two days and three nights in Jaipur. However, after one full day of sightseeing, we spent the entire second day relaxing at our hotel. (For what it’s worth, we were here with a toddler and had just spent three full days in Delhi and kind of just needed a break.)

jaipur tourist ticket

When to go to Jaipur

Jaipur is located just southwest of Delhi. The weather in the two cities is very similar, but Jaipur tends to be a bit warmer. In this area of India, the weather changes drastically by season. More than many other destinations, its really important to plan a trip to Jaipur at the right time of year.

Here’s a look at Jaipur weather by season. All temperatures are in °F.

  • Summer in Jaipur (April – June): Summer is extremely hot with temperatures regularly hitting 100°F or higher.
  • Monsoon Season in Jaipur (July – September): The monsoon season starts in late June and brings with it heavy rains and humidity. Highs tend to be in the 90s with lows in the 80s.
  • Fall and winter in Jaipur (October – January) : The rainy season gives way to a milder fall and winter. High temps steadily drop down to the 70s and lows into the 50s. Even in the winter months, temps rarely fall below the upper 40s.
  • Spring in Jaipur (February – March): Temperatures shoot up quickly in the spring and can vary greatly by the day. Highs will hit the 80s and 90s and lows will move up to the 60s and 70s.

The best time to visit Jaipur is in the late winter or early spring (January through March). You definitely want to avoid the summer’s crippling heat and monsoon season.

Other than weather, you may also want to plan around holidays and festivals. Jaipur hosts a popular Kite Festival and Literature Festival every January. It’s also a popular city for celebrating Diwali, Holi and other Hindu holidays.

What to wear in Jaipur

As we drove from Delhi to Jaipur, I saw a sharp change in what people were wearing — particularly women. In Delhi, there was a lot more western and modern dress mixed in with more traditional saris and kurtas (a long tonic worn over pants). By the time we arrived in Jaipur, I found that nearly all of the women were dressed in saris. Specifically, the women in Jaipur wore their sari with the pallu (or loose end of the sari) covering their head.

For that reason, I’d suggest erring on the conservative side with your clothing choices in Jaipur. You certainly don’t need to wear a sari yourself, but I would try to keep your shoulders and knees covered. A maxi dress or a long skirt with a t-shirt is a great option for women in Jaipur. You’ll keep cool and won’t stand out too much. I would avoid shorts, short skirts, and tank tops.

jaipur tourist ticket

Most men were wearing jeans and t shirts or polos, so I would recommend men wear something along those lines.

The tourist attractions in Jaipur are pretty spread out. There is a cluster of things in the old city, walkable from the City Palace, but then everything else is a bit of a hike.

Jaipur does have a Metro, but there are only two lines. If your hotel happens to be along the Metro, it is a convenient way to get to the old city. However, it doesn’t to connect to much else, including the Amer Fort.

jaipur tourist ticket

To get around Jaipur, you’ll want some wheels. The cheapest way to get around Jaipur is by tuk tuk (or auto rickshaw). They can be hailed all over the city and can always be found near tourist attractions. You can hire a tuk tuk for each individual trip or you can hire a driver for the entire day. The later is often cheaper and will cost somewhere around Rs. 500-700 ($6-9 USD) for the day.

Tuk tuks are a great way to ride like a local. However, if you’re traveling with kids who need a carseat or just aren’t keen on riding without seatbelts or doors, you may want to hire a car with a driver instead. We booked a car through our hotel and it cost about Rs 10,000 ($120 USD).

jaipur tourist ticket

Jaipur has another unique mode of transportation: elephants. This is most commonly seen at Amer Fort, where people ride elephants up the steep hill to the fort’s entrance, but you’ll see them around the town, too. We do not recommend riding elephants.

When we visited an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai , we learned that elephant’s backs and spines are not designed to be weight bearing. Riding elephants can result in permanent injury. The elephants here are also not treated that well. We do not want to perpetuate the abuse, so we’d encourage you to skip the elephant rides.

About this Jaipur itinerary

In this itinerary, we’ll explore explore Jaipur over one or two days. If you only have one day, follow the day 1 schedule. If you have more time, tap into the activities on day 2.

You will need to hire either a car or a tuk tuk to get you around to the different attractions. We personally hired a car through our hotel, because our little one needed a car seat. Hiring a tuk tuk for the day would have been cheaper.

Many of the sites listed here have signs posted in English and Hindi, but if you want to learn more about the history you might want to hire a guide. In Rajasthan, guides are regulated by the government. They have to have credentials and charge a set rate. For each site below, we’ll note if guides are available and how much they cost.

Lastly, this itinerary is targeted toward first-time visitors. It’s packed with the city’s most popular attractions and doesn’t explore many of the hidden gems or secondary attractions that would likely fill subsequent visits.

All set? Let’s explore Jaipur!

jaipur tourist ticket

You can pack a lot into one full day in Jaipur, and we’re going to do just that. We’ll start our day up in the Aravalli Hills, exploring hilltop forts and palaces, taking in some epic views and enjoying some of the most delicious local foods. Then we’ll go back into the old city to see a couple more iconic Jaipur sites.

Start your day early — we recommend around 8 AM. This schedule should keep you busy until about 5 PM.

Panna Meena ka Kund (Step-well)

  • Location: Here — The entrance is on the southwest corner along Sagar Road. There is space on the road nearby for vehicles to park and/or wait.
  • How to get there: Unless you’re staying in Amer (then you can walk), you will need a car or tuk tuk to take you here.
  • Hours: 7 AM to 6 PM, everyday
  • Price: Free
  • Tickets: No tickets required
  • Guide info: We did not notice any guides for hire here.
  • How long does it take: 15 minutes

On the way to Amer Fort, make a quick stop here first. You can also do it after, but the way the one-way traffic works in the hills around the fort, it’s out of the way to come back to it later.

Panna Meena ka Kund is a large step-well with a beautiful cross pattern of stairs along all four sides. This type of well, which has steps leading down to a water source, is common in India because it allowed people to reach the water at a variety of depths based on the season. Most step-wells, including Panna Meena ka Kund, are no longer in use today.

You cannot go down the steps at Panna Meena ka Kund, but you can walk the parameter. The step-well itself is quite beautiful and worthy of a quick visit. It’s also right across the street from Bihari Ji Temple, which you may also what to take a quick look at.

jaipur tourist ticket

  • Location: Here — The entrance to the fort is near Chand Pol gate on the north end of the complex. If you’re arriving by car, the parking lot and drop-off area is just north of here.
  • How to get there: Take a car or tuk tuk to the entrance. Jeeps are also available for hire from the base for Rs. 500 roundtrip. The entrance is at the top of the hill and only accessible via a windy road. Even if it looks walkable on a map, it is not.
  • Hours: 8 AM – 5:30 PM, everyday (NOTE: Some websites say the fort opens at 9 AM. I can confirm that the fort was well open by our arrival at 8:30 AM.)
  • Price: Rs. 500
  • Tickets: You can buy tickets online in advance here or there is a ticket window near the entrance
  • Guide info: Guides are available for hire all around the Amber fort, including at the base, along the drive up the hill, and near the entrance. Guides cost Rs. 400 for 1 person, Rs. 600 for 5 – 15 or Rs. 1000 for 15-35.
  • How long does it take: 2 hours

This specific site goes by a handful of different names. Amer Fort, Amer Palace, Amber Fort and Amber Palace are all different names for the same place. It is both a palace and a fort. The palace was built in the late 1500s as a residence for the royals (Rajput Maharajas and their families). Located high on a hill and fortified by walls and other protective elements, it’s also considered a fort.

jaipur tourist ticket

The entrance opens up to a large square, where military parades used to be held. Today, this is where you will find the ticket booth, snack stand and lots of people selling souvenirs. To the right is a large stairway leading up to the palace itself.

Once you enter, you’re free to explore most of the large palace. It’s primarily broken up into four main courtyards, but there are lots of small hallways and hidden stairways that could keep you busy (and a little lost) for a while.

jaipur tourist ticket

The entire complex is beautiful. There are intricately carved pillars, beautifully painted gates, and stunning arc-framed views over Amer and Jaipur City. Some of the most beautiful and popular spots are Ganesh Pol (the first main gate you see when you enter), Sheesh Mahal (also called the Hall of Mirrors because of it’s mosaic of mirrors) and Jas Mandir (located above the courtyard near Hall of Mirrors).

Amer Fort is a popular photo spot. There were lots of photographers shooting engagement photos and influencers getting their shot. Pair that with every other tourist trying to get a picture and it is a lot. For the best photos and lowest crowds, plan to arrive by 8 AM. (We got there at 8:40 and it felt too late.)

If you want Hall of Mirrors photos, go there first, because it’s the most popular. I honestly liked the first gate the best, though.

jaipur tourist ticket

Jaigarh Fort

  • Location: Here — not far from Amer Fort
  • How to get there: One option is to walk. There is an open-air passageway that connects Amer Fort to Jaigarh Fort that is just about 1 mile long. Alternatively, you can take a car/tuk tuk between the two, but driving the five miles along winding roads through the hills will take you about 20 minutes.
  • Hours: 9 AM – 6:30 PM, everyday
  • Price: Rs. 100
  • Tickets: There is a ticket booth located near the entrance. Tickets are not sold online.
  • Guide info: There are no guides advertised, however there are people who will show you around inside (whether you ask for it or not) that you’ll need to tip.
  • How long does it take: 1 hour

While the royals lived in Amer Fort, nearby Jaigarh Fort was built as the primary military and defense fort. The structure itself is utilitarian in nature and not nearly has beautiful as Amer Fort. For that reason, Jaigarh Fort tends to be much less popular and is often skipped or overlooked. This is exactly why it should definitely be on your itinerary. You can enjoy some of the best views in town and have it largely all to yourself.

jaipur tourist ticket

The fort is wide and pretty spread out. After the entrance, the the route splits in two. You can turn right and follow signs to the world’s largest cannon on wheels. The cannon is fine, but the views overlooking Jaipur City from here are are more impressive. Or you can carry on straight to explore the bulk of the fort.

Most of the fort has small museum style exhibits with model scenes, old weaponry, artwork and more. You can explore the passageways, courtyards and rooms all around the fort.

jaipur tourist ticket

This is all fine, but the best part of this fort is the views overlooking Amer Fort and the surrounding Aravalli Hills. To get to the viewpoint, follow signs toward Laxmi Vilas and then to Sagar Chatri. This is where you’re likely to be picked up by guide who will show you around and explain everything to you. We ended up tipping Rs. 500 ($6 USD) which was very generous.

Sagar Chatri is the garden with the most stunning views. (Watch out for monkeys, though! They will definitely take your stuff.)

jaipur tourist ticket

If you’re already hungry and don’t want to drive back into Amer, grab lunch at the cafe here. Otherwise…

Thali Lunch at Zeeman Restaurant

  • Location: Here — it’s back toward Amer, so it’s a little out of the way, but still worth it.
  • How to get there: Hire a car or tuk tuk
  • Hours: 9 AM – 10 PM, everyday
  • Price: Rs. 250 – 400 per person (USD $3 – 5)

Thali is a traditional way of serving food in India. The word translates to “large plate,” on top of which are many small bowls containing several different dishes. It’s a really great way to try a variety of foods just like the locals do.

Zeeman Restaurant is really popular and highly rated. They have a large menu with a variety of (vegetarian) items, but Thali is their specialty. While there are several different variations, I’d recommend getting the Rajasthani Special Thali. This one features a traditional variety of local foods eaten in the region.

jaipur tourist ticket

Ask your server to explain how to eat the foods together. For example, you’re supposed to eat the round bread with the dal and the powdered stuff is dessert. You might not like everything, but it’s fun to try it all.

jaipur tourist ticket

  • Location: Here — in the middle of Man Sagar Lake
  • How to get there: Take a car or tuk tuk to the viewing area along Amer Road. You will pass it on the way back from Amer to Jaipur City.
  • Hours: Visible at any time
  • Tickets: NA
  • Guide info: NA

Jal Mahal is called the water palace, but it was never intended to be a palace or to be surrounded by water. It was originally built as a five-story hunting lodge. It was flooded when they built a dam to create the surrounding lake in response to a severe drought.

jaipur tourist ticket

Today, you can only see the top floor of the lodge/palace above the water line. You can’t go inside, but you can see the palace from the shore.

When you hop out to see the palace, you’ll have to cross through a small street market. We saw booths selling everything from shoes and sunglass to toys and tattoos. (Real tattoos!) There was also little vehicles for kids to ride on (for a fee of course) and lots of food vendors. It’s fun for a stroll if you have time, but not a must-do.

jaipur tourist ticket

  • Location: Here — facing Hawa Mahal Road
  • How to get there: If you’re coming from Jal Mahal, take a car or tuk tuk. You can also walk here from just about anywhere in the old city
  • Hours: 9 AM – 4:30 PM, everyday (exterior is visible at anytime)
  • Price: Rs. 200 to enter (exterior is free to view)
  • Tickets: You can buy tickets online in advance here or there is a ticket window near the entrance.
  • Guide info: Signs are posted in both English and Hindi.

Amer Fort is the most popular attraction in Jaipur, but Hawa Mahal is the symbol of the city. The stunning exterior is made of pink and red sandstone, which plays into the city’s nickname of the Pink City. It was built for royal ladies to watch events and parades on the streets below.

jaipur tourist ticket

The most impressive thing about Hawa Mahal is its facade. You can see the building up close along Hawa Mahal Road or you can head to Wind View Cafe on the third floor across the street for a view from above.

Most people only see Hawa Mahal from the outside, but there is a small museum inside. You can learn about the history and walk through the building to see what the royal ladies once saw.

Jantar Mantar*

* If you have two days in Jaipur, head to Jantar Mantar next. However, if you only have one day, you might want to skip this one and do the City Palace or Bapu Bazar instead.

  • Location: Here — the main entrance is just south of the City Palace
  • How to get there: You can walk to Jantar Mantar from Hawa Mahal or the City Palace. If you’re coming from somewhere else, a car or tuk tuk can drop you off near the entrance.
  • Hours: 9 AM – 4:30 PM, everyday
  • Price: Rs. 200
  • Tickets: You can buy tickets online in advance here or there is a ticket window near the entrance. (Tip: At the ticket booth, there is a separate queue for foreigners which is usually shorter.)
  • Guide info: Guides are available for hire for Rs 200 – 500 depending on your group size.

Jantar Mantar is an observatory with several historical astronomical instruments. Built in the early 1700s, the large, stone structures take different measurements, tell time, track stars, etc.

jaipur tourist ticket

There are a few signs throughout the observatory in both Hindi and English that explain what the devices were used for. If you really want to understand, though, you should probably hire a guide. If not, think of it as more of an outdoor art gallery. The large, geometric structures are impressive and beautiful even if you don’t know what they do.

It gets pretty hot at Juntar Mantar in the afternoon, and there isn’t much shade. There is a cafe that sells cold bottled beverages and some snacks that has shaded seating.

After Juntar Mantar, it will probably be close to dinner time. If you have another day in Jaipur, we’d suggest heading back to your hotel for dinner and drinks before going into another busy day. If this is your only day, you might want to squeeze in more of the activities from day 2 below.

jaipur tourist ticket

Day 2 — Old City & Bazar

On our second day in Jaipur, we’ll stay in Jaipur City. Once you get to the City Palace, you can walk around the bazar and old city on foot. If you want to visit the last place on this list, you’ll need a car or tuk tuk.

We suggest starting early and getting to the City Palace when they open around 9:30 AM to beat the heat and the crowds.

We personally only spent one full day exploring Jaipur. Our specific itinerary was everything listed above in day 1, plus Bapu Bazar. We had this second day planned, but didn’t end up getting to do it because we all just needed a break. Even though we didn’t do all of these things, we wanted to include them so you could pack them in if you want.

Jaipur City Palace

  • Location: Here — in the middle of the old city
  • How to get there: Depending on where you’re coming from you can take a car/tuk tuk, walk, or even take the Metro to Badi Chaupar station.
  • Hours: 9:30 AM – 7 PM, everyday (museum is only open 10 AM – 6 PM and the ticket window closes at 5 PM)
  • Price: Rs. 300 for basic entry. A royal tour through all the rooms is more expensive. There is no official price and it can vary.
  • Tickets: It’s best to buy tickets at the ticket booth near the entrance. You can also buy tickets online here , but only the more expensive composite ticket.
  • Guide info: Guides are available for hire at the site for Rs. 400 – 600, depending on your group size. Audio guides are also available and signs are posted in English and Hindi.

Jaipur City Palace was built in the 1700s when the capital was moved to Jaipur. The Jaipur royal family still resides in the palace today, so much of the palace is closed off to the public.

Visitors to the City Palace can enter some of the courtyards, but the main tourist attraction is the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum. The museum explores Jaipur’s history through textiles, weaponry and art. You cannot enter many of the palace rooms without paying for a royal private tour, which is a few thousand rupees.

jaipur tourist ticket

Since we didn’t personally explore this palace, I’ll defer you to Common Wanderer for a beautiful photo tour of the palace.

For what it’s worth, I’ve heard mixed reviews about the City Palace. Some people claim it’s wonderful and beautiful, but most seem to say it’s fine to skip.

  • Location: Here — Bapu Bazar street between Chaura Rasta Road and Sanganeri Gate
  • How to get there: You can walk here from most anywhere in the old city. Otherwise have a car or tuk tuk drop you at either end of the market.
  • Hours: 11 AM – 8 or 10 PM, everyday (some stores close earlier)

We love a street market and this is a fun one. We didn’t get to spend much time walking around Delhi, so we went out of our way to explore more of Jaipur on foot. If you exit the City Palace area from Tripolia Gate, you can walk straight south to the bazar. This route isn’t overly touristy, so it’s fun to see the stores and restaurants that the locals go to.

Bapu Bazar is kind of really touristy, but also kind of not. If you walk through as a tourist, everyone will ask you to come into their shop. There are souvenirs like t shirts and magnets, but it’s mostly textiles. Most of the shops sell pashminas, shoes and traditional clothing. It felt like most of the people actually shopping at the bazar were locals and/or Indian tourists.

jaipur tourist ticket

The bazar was really beautiful to walk through. If you stop to shop it can take about an hour. Otherwise, you can move through it pretty quickly. If you’re walking west to east, you’ll end at Johari Bazar Road, which is another shopping street. Walking back north to City Palace is another fun route, or you can walk south to Albert Hall.

Albert Hall

  • Location: Here — south of Jaipur old city
  • How to get there: You can walk from the old city or take a short tuk tuk ride
  • Hours: 9 AM – 5 PM, everyday
  • Price: Rs. 150

Albert Hall is an art museum in Jaipur. It’s the oldest museum in Jaipur and was first opened in 1887. The museum highlights a collection of Indian works ranging from pantings and sculptures to carpets and weapons.

While the museum itself is well regarded, many people say the exterior alone is worth a visit. The building is beautiful from the outside, day or night. It’s free to enter the courtyard to see the exterior.

We personally got a little turned around after Bapu Bazar and unfortunately missed Albert Hall. I would have really liked to see this one!

Patrika Gate

  • Location: Here — far south side of Jaipur
  • How to get there: You will need to take a car or tuk tuk here
  • Hours: Open all the time
  • How long does it take: 30 minutes, but it takes a while to get there

This gate is pretty new, and was only built in 2016. It sits in the center of a traffic circle, far away from almost every other tourist attraction in Jaipur. But if you are willing to make the trip down to Patrika Gate, beauty awaits.

Patrika Gate was basically built for Instagram. From the outside, it mirrors the architecture and pink color synonymous with Jaipur. On the inside, a series of symmetrical archways are painted with a rainbow of colors that create the most stunning frames.

It’s a popular spot for photo shoots, whether you’re a newlywed or an influencer. In fact, photos are pretty much the only thing to do there. But if that’s your thing, it’s totally worth it.

And that actually wraps up our second day in Jaipur! Depending on what you went inside and what you just walked past, this schedule might take you to lunch time or well past dinner time. If you need more to do, though, keep reading!

In the above itinerary, we’ve covered the best and most popular things to do in Jaipur. However, if you’re looking to try something different or if you have more time to fill, here’s a few more ideas.

  • Nahargarh Fort: This fort is up in the hills past Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort, so it’s best to do them all at the same time. This one is the highest of the three forts and has the best views.
  • Gaitore Ki Chhatriyan: This is a crematorium for the royals with several stone and marble domed memorials. It’s very beautiful and not very crowded, so it’s a good place to explore outside of the standard tourist route.
  • Isarlat: For more great views over Jaipur City, head to the top of this 7-story minaret. Jaipur was the first “planned city” with a grid system in India, and there’s no better way to see it than from the top of this pillar.
  • Sisodia Rani ka Bagh: If you need to escape the noise of the city, head to this lovely garden. The fountains and painted gates make for a great photo op, too.
  • Birla Mandir Jaipur: This Hindu temple was built in the late 1980s. It’s famous for it’s marble carvings and sculptures as well as its stained glass windows.

Closing thoughts on Jaipur

We liked Jaipur but didn’t love it. The highlight of our visit was definitely watching the chaotic traffic zip by in the old city. The Amer Fort was also great and we did really enjoy Bapu Bazar.

I think Jaipur was just built up a lot for us. We had low expectations for Delhi and high expectations for Jaipur, and our experience in both were flipped. We loved Delhi more than we thought and Jaipur less than we thought.

jaipur tourist ticket

What’s tough is that I think you actually only need one full day in Jaipur, but that ends up taking three because you need a day to get there and another day to get to your next city. That is a lot of time if you’re also visiting Delhi and Agra, or any other cities.

If you have time for a full Golden Triangle trip (at least 8-10 days), of course you should visit Jaipur. But if you were short on time, I would honestly say it’s not worth the three days it takes to get here.

Best Time to Visit Jaipur

Best Time

Being a semi-desert area and filled with numerable places to visit, Jaipur attracts millions of visitors every year. However, the Pink City has certain favorable times to visit.

According to Jaipur travel guides, the best time to pay a visit to Jaipur is from October to March. During these months, the heat level remains moderate, followed by pleasant weather. Thus, moving around the city becomes easier and more convenient.

Winters in Jaipur are normally an affair of mist and magic. While pleasant climate and a bright sun are persistent during the daytime, the atmosphere starts to change during the evening. Nights are accompanied with mist and temperature can fall down to 5 degrees, which makes them quite chilly and the weather remains foggy till the morning.

City Palace

City Palace

Among all the palaces included in Jaipur Travel Guide, the City Palace has served the most important role in Rajasthan’s history. Since Maharaja Sawai Man Singh moved into this palace, City Palace is serving as the residence to the royal families of Jaipur. Over the last few centuries, it has seen many majestic celebrations, which include royal marriages and festivals of the royal family.

Built during 1729-1732, City Palace is a remarkable example of the combination of Mughal and Rajasthani architecture. Remnants of European architecture can also be found.  Mubarak Mahal and the Chandra Mahal comprise the main palace complex. Mukut Mahal, Maharani’s Palace, Shri Govind Dev Temple and the City Palace Museum also lie within the premises of this palace. Entry to city palace is quite affordable and remarkable as well.

The Pitam Niwas Chowk, also known as ‘Peacock Gate’ is the gateway to Chandra Mahal. It is a finely decorated place with motifs of peacock, which represents autumn. Several other paintings and artefacts are engraved on this gate. Some of them depict the replicas of Hindu Gods and all the four seasons in India.

Diwan-i-Khas and Diwan-i-Aam, which served as the royal and public meeting venues for the kings are ornamented with crystal chandeliers. Marble floors and minutely painted designs and shapes on the ceiling of both these chambers offer the most captivating view. Diwan-i-Khas possesses two massive urns, crafted out of pure silver. These urns were used by the Maharaja to carry holy water of the Ganges, while he was on his trip to England.

Entrance of Diwan-i-Aam is fringed by two replicas of elephants, which were carved out of a single piece of marble.  This extremely decorated chamber has been converted to a museum, displaying miniature paintings of the Mughal and Rajput eras, and handwritten scriptures of Bhagavad Gita. ‘Takth-e-Rawal’ or the ‘Golden Throne’ has been installed in this gallery.

Jantar Mantar, the astronomical observatory is a part of the City Palace complex. City Palace is a not-to-be-missed palace in the Jaipur Travel Guide and a major landmark of Jaipur with a rich historical heritage.

Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal is also one of the important palaces in the Jaipur Travel Guide. Built in 1798 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, it has a five-storey building, whose windows are decorated with intricate latticework.

Hawa Mahal has a total of 953 windows, designed in a unique honeycomb shape. These windows resembles to the shape of Lord Krishna’s crown. The latticework on the windows allows a passage to the royal ladies to observe life outside the palace, restricting outsiders to have a glimpse of them. Situated in the heart of the city, it is a part of the City Palace.

The palace is built in red and pink sandstone and it is a fine example of the lively fusion of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles. The overhanging covering and pillars in this palace are ornamented and carved with floral designs that symbolise Rajputana style. On the other hand, the arched stone works of this palace reflect Mughal art and culture.

Hawa Mahal served as one of the favourite palaces of Maharaja Jai Singh, who oftenly visited this palace to beat the scorching desert summers. The windows in this palace are designed in a unique way: they always allows cool breeze into the main courtyard and the rooms within the palace. Fountains in front of the palace were constructed to enhance this cooling effect.

Jaleb Chowk is the first and the main among all the four courtyards. This East facing courtyard was meant for royal parades after carving victory in the battles.

Jal Mahal or the Water Palace is another astonishing palace in Jaipur and is surely a must-visit place in the Jaipur Travel Guide. Away from the bustling life of Jaipur, Jal Mahal is located in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, which offers a tranquil and serene ambience around the palace. Maharaja Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber, built Jal Mahal.

While the evergreen Aravali Hills provides an enticing background, the water body of 300 acres around the lake boosts up the grandeur of this palace. Out of five storeys of the palace, four storeys remain underwater when the lake is completely filled with water.

Due to water logging problems in the recent past, Jal Mahal had to undergo a series of severe threats. However, the government started renovation work to conserve and uplift the magnificence of this historical palace. Dams and water bodies around this palace have been significantly restored.

The lake, which was once a hotspot for various species of migratory birds, is regaining its old fame. Traditional boats, crafted in Rajputana style are available on the banks of the lake, which takes the visitors to the palace. Nights offer the most panoramic view of Jal Mahal, as the entire palace is illuminated and the lake water reflects the beauty of this glowing palace in an alluring way.

Jaigarh Fort

Jaigarh Fort

Built in the year 1726 by Jai Singh II, the Jaigarh Fort of Jaipur is also known as the ‘Fort of Victory’. It is located on a rocky plain of the Aravalli range. Huge impounding walls and watchtowers guards Jaigarh Fort. Walls of this fort were built with red sandstone and their thickness helped them to counter enemy attacks.

The architectural layout of this fort is quite similar to Amber Fort and it was constructed to tighten the security of the royal families. Granaries, water reservoirs and storage system of Jaigarh Fort are very remarkable.

They were constructed in such a way that people living within the fort can have sufficient supply of food and fresh water for quite a longer period.  Due to this reason, architectural experts of modern times call this fort as one of the best and most self-sufficient forts in Jaipur.

This fort has also served as one of the major cannon foundries to the Rajput and the Mughal kings. Availability of iron ore around this fort made it a major destination to produce arms and ammunition.

This fort now houses a museum, which highlights some of the primary cannons and other weapons used by the kings. Jaivana Cannon, the world’s largest cannon on wheels was manufactured in the foundries of this fort. The cannon is now on display in the museum.

During the olden days, Laal Maas was considered to be a dish only for the royals. The royal cooks even kept the recipe of Laal Maas secret from the commoners as well as from the royal women. However, Laal Maas can now be found all across Jaipur and its surrounding places.

While wallets, belts, bags and lampshades are some of the best things to buy in Bapu Bazar, the legacy of this bazar lies in making 'Mojri' shoes. These shoes are the traditional footwear of Jaipur and are known for their elegant designs and durability. Beautiful embroidery work makes these shoes truly appealing.

Johri Bazar

Johri Bazar

Anokhi

Jaipur handicrafts are known all over the world. Whether the leather products, precious gems and jewels or textile products, Jaipur has an unmatched standard. Talking about the textile products, especially the handicrafts, not many places in the world have been able to match Jaipur, which is the reason Jaipur's products are much more desirable than any of the other places.

Anokhi is one of the highly visited textile boutiques in Jaipur. Its quality and block printing textiles are very unique in their own way and they are the sole reason for Anokhi’s fame across the world.

Most of Anokhi's products are handcrafted and are accomplished by very skilled craftspersons. Beadwork, patchwork, embroidery and appliqué are some of the specialised fields of Anokhi.

To keep the traditional trend of Jaipur alive amidst the modern trend of dressing, Anokhi has set up a museum near Amber Fort called 'Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing'. This museum displays a wide range of block printed clothes and demonstrates how to preserve the traditional art.

Hawa Mahal

Resembling Krishna’s crown, Hawa Mahal is an elaborate monument in Jaipur. Standing right in the middle of the old market of Jaipur, the structure made of red and pink sandstone keeps the name of the Pink City very proudly. Explore Hawa Mahal on Jaipur travel packages for historical elegance. The palace was built for the ladies of the royal household to observe everyday life and festivals without being seen from the outside.Today, it stands as a timeless symbol of Jaipur's architectural, cultural, and historical splendour. It features a unique honeycomb design on its facade with 953 intricately carved windows called "Jharokhas". The delicate lattice design on the windows allows cool breezes to flow through and keep the palace cool, thereby giving the palace its name. The majestic facade of Hawa Mahal which is visible from the street is not its main front, it’s the back. The monument’s delicate stone-carved screens, small casements, and arched roofs make it a captivating tourist spot, preserving the rich heritage of Rajasthan. From its top floors, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the bustling streets and grand all-pink architecture of Jaipur city. Hawa Mahal's exquisite craftsmanship and historical significance make it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and architecture lovers alike.History of Hawa Mahal Jaipur - Hawa Mahal was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh who was the grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh. The story of the birth of the palace started when Pratap visited Jhunjhunu and saw Khetri Mahal.Maharaj was impressed by the unique design of the Khetri Mahal, and that was when he decided to create a better version of it. Lal Chand Ustad designed this palace and ended up making one of the best monuments history has ever created. The primary purpose for creating this palace was to give royal women a separate place. From Hawa Mahal, they could enjoy the everyday lives and celebrations of the festival through the windows without being seen as they weren’t allowed to go out in public without a veil. The Hawa Mahal was a part of the main City Palace, and the royal family used to come here to escape the scorching heat as this palace was always cold and breezy due to the windows it has. From then on, it has been preserved to keep the glory and grace alive for the generations to come.Architecture of Hawa Mahal Jaipur - Hawa Mahal is an excellent example of Hindu Rajput architecture finely blended with Islamic Mughal architecture giving it the face it is famous for. It is made with red and pink sandstone along with white marble inside the palace. The look of the palace observed from the street looks extremely beautiful, and people mistake it with the entrance of the palace. Actually, it is the backside of the palace as it is an extended part of the main City Palace. It has five floors adorned with 953 jharokhas and latticework. The technology of Venturi effect is utilised well to make the air coming inside the palace cool. This effect always helped the Hawa Mahal stay serene and pleasant, so royal women never had a problem staying here in hot temperatures. At several times, the entire royal family used to get together here and escape the summers together. This honeycomb-like monument is a proud heritage left by the bygone era, which is an integral part of the history as well as architecture.

We purchased a composite ticket, which covered the entry fees for the following attractions:

Isarlate (Sargasooli ) Tower in centre of city - bit of a climb to top but worth it

Janter Manter (Observatory) in the centre of the city

Hawa Mahal - in the City

Albert Hall Museum - about 20 minutes walk from city, or take tuk tuk

Nahargrah Fort - visited on day 2 needs transport

Amber Fort - visited on day 2 needs transport - entry fee 500 for foreigners without ticket.

Sisodia Rani Bagh - Gardens 10 Kilometers outside of the city on Agra to Jaipur highway

Vidhiyadhar Bagh - Gardens locate in the centre of the City

These tickets can be purchased from the ticket office of the participating attractions and is valid for 2 days only. It is not valid for night time tourism. The cost of the ticket is 1,000 per person about £12, for foreigners and 300 Rupees for Indians. The tickets do not cover the city palace.

The City Palace is 500 Rupees to enter, there was a composite ticket for 500 Rupees (about £6) this entitled access to the Palace Courts, Galleries, Jaigarth and Royal Cenotaphs. There was a charge of 2,500 Rupees each ( about £30) to visit the Private Rooms in the Chandni Mahal, this included a guide. Indian visitors paid considerably less, needless to say we did not bother.

We did not visit the 2 gardens available on the ticket.

One day 1, we did the attractions in the city, on foot combined with tuk tuk rides

Day 2 we hired a cab for 6 hours (Ola Rental) this cost us 1,000 (about £12). Would not advise taking a tuk tuk to visit the Forts.

We also visited Jaigarth Fort was not included in the composite ticket so we paid 100 Rupees each 50 Rupees for the driver and another 100 Rupees to take the car into the fort. Good idea to take a car into the Fort it is a bit of a walk to get there from the road.

Think the Composite Ticket is a good idea, saves some money and time queueing at ticket offices.

We thought that the ticket was good value, and avoided have to queue for tickets at every attraction.

All of the places visited will be reviewed on TripAdvisor.

Ultimate Jaipur Itinerary For 2 Days – Budget Solo Trip In 5,000 INR

8 famous places to visit in ajmer on a minimal budget, top 5 ajmer famous food options you should not miss out.

jaipur itinerary for 2 days

Jaipur is undoubtedly my favorite Rajasthan city.

Not because it’s the capital, but it has a lot of things that still amaze me. I visited the Pink City of Rajasthan in 2020, just before the Covid-19 pandemic, and was lucky enough to explore every part of the city.

Be it’s food, people, monuments, heritage, or city structure, I found it pretty charming. It has everything that a true solo traveler wants: calmness, chaos, breathtaking views, city vibes, colors, and snacks.

More importantly, visiting a new place requires a lot of planning and research. And if you’re a solo budget traveler like me, you have to plan it much better to avoid denting your pockets. When making my itinerary of Jaipur, I made it in such a way that I could cover maximum places at minimum cost. As a result, I was able to cover my whole trip in just under 5,000 INR (60-70 USD).

Hence, to save your time and effort, I have shared my exact Jaipur Itinerary that will suit you if you plan to visit this beautiful city for 2-3 days. So, without any further ado, let’s dive in:

How To Reach Jaipur?

To reach Jaipur, you’ve plenty of options. It’s well connected with almost every Indian state and has regular trains, flights, and Volvo buses.

Reaching By Air:  Jaipur International Airport (JAI) has regular flights from major Indian cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, etc. You can pre-book your flights in advance to get a steal deal and to avoid the last-day price surge.

Reaching By Train:  Jaipur Railway Station (JP) also has trains from all parts of India. It’s one of the cheapest ways to reach Jaipur from your starting city. Boarding an overnight train is recommended to start your journey fresh from Day 1.

Reaching By Bus:  If you missed the train tickets and didn’t have the flight budget, you can prefer to come to Jaipur by the Volvo bus. Multiple buses run from New Delhi at night, taking 6-8 hours of your total journey time.

Jaipur 2 Days Itinerary – A Detailed Guide

As Jaipur has too many places to cover, it’s a great idea to start with the farthest locations first. I follow this strategy when I am low on time and have to visit all the historic spots without missing them. However, you always have the option to reverse the itinerary as per your comfort and schedule.

The below Pink City itinerary will not only help you plan your Jaipur trip comfortably but will also help you save a lot of money while traveling. I planned my budget Jaipur trip to ensure I cover almost all the historical places with plenty of time to spend at each location.

Jaipur Itinerary – Day 01

If you’re arriving in Jaipur early in the morning, head straight to your hotel, check-in, and take a bath to clean yourself. Then, relax for a few hours and pack your backpack for the rest of the day ahead.

Nahargarh Fort

nahargarh fort - original roaming jack

On Day 1, I started my Jaipur solo trip by visiting Nahargarh Fort. The best time to visit this place is early in the morning, to avoid sunlight in the noon hours. However, you can also customize your trip as the fort looks more beautiful at night.

You can take a private round cab to reach this fort, as no local buses or rickshaws go to this hilltop. However, cabs get too expensive and can hit your budget for the rest of the day, so make sure to negotiate the prices. Since I was traveling solo, I booked an OLA bike for myself because it was 70-80% cheaper than the private cabs.

Best Thing Happened: When I discussed my plan with the OLA bike driver, he said he would help me cover all Jaipur’s forts at the cost of 700 INR only (10-12 USD). So, I readily accepted his offer; as if you’ll check out the cab prices for the whole forts tour in Jaipur, it’s over 3,000 (40-50 USD) for the entire day. That was a steal deal for me, and what more can you want on your first day!!!

It took me around 1 hour to reach this place by bike, and I entered the fort around 10:30 AM. Nahargarh fort offers the best breathtaking views of the whole city of Jaipur, so without any crowds, I was able to capture stunning pictures.

How To Reach: Private Cab, OLA bike

Jaigarh Fort

jaigarh fort-jaipur-roamingjack

The next place on your trip can be the majestic Jaigarh Fort, located just 6KM from the Nahargarh Fort. Again, I took the same OLA bike, and it took me 20 minutes to reach Jaigarh Fort.

Jaigarh Fort is known for its robust structure and rigors, and you should visit this place to learn about Rajasthan’s war history. The fort is famous for its giant Cannon, which is a treat to watch.

However, please beware of the monkeys everywhere around this fort. High chances are they might snatch your phones or belongings, and it will be super hard to get them back.

How To Reach:  Private Cab, OLA bike

Amber Palace/Amer Fort

amer fort-jaipur-roamingjack

Undoubtedly the most charming and beautiful fort in Rajasthan is Amer Fort. It is located just 8 KMs away from the Jaigarh Fort, so you can easily cover this on Day 1 itself. I reached Amer fort around 2 PM at noon, and even in the scorching heat, this place was full of people.

Amer fort and palace museum are famous for their beauty, artifacts, mirrors, ornaments, and history. You can easily dedicate 3-4 hours to this location by exploring its authentic architecture and shopping near the fort bazaar.

Personally, I loved this fort the most amongst the three because of the history related to it. King Man Singh originally built the fort, and it was later modified by Sawai Jai Singh.

After visiting all the major forts of the Pink City, I headed straight to the center of the city to have some food. I paid the discussed amount to the Bike driver and gave him a few bucks as a tip for being so patient on my journey.

Rawat Mishthan Bhandar

Pyaz Kachori at Rawat Misthan Bhandar-roaming-jack

It was almost evening, and I went to Jaipur’s most famous sweet shop, Rawat Mishthan Bhandar. They are widely renowned for their pyaz kachoris and sweets.

Whenever you get the time, on Day 1 or Day 2, I recommend you to visit this sweet shop, as you will love their Kachoris. They have a huge demand, and sometimes it even takes 30-40 minutes to serve your order.

Not only will you love the snacks at this place, but you’ll also become a fan of Jaipur’s local food.

After covering all the above places, you might get tired and think about landing at your hotel for the night. However, you have many choices to enjoy your night in Jaipur. You can visit clubs, cafes, and restaurants for a fine dinner for yourself. However, I had some different plans and wanted to visit the famous Chokhi Dhani Resort.

Must Haves:  Pyaaz Kachori, Samosa, Lassi, Ghevar

Cost for two:  INR 100-300 or USD 3-5 (approx.)

When:  06:00 AM to 10:30 PM

Chokhi Dhani Ethnic Village Resort

chokhi dhani-jaipur-roamingjack

Jaipur’s trip is incomplete without visiting the Chokhi Dhani resort. And, trust me, you will love this place’s experience.

The good news is, everyone can enjoy this place, be it solo, couples or families. And the bad news is that the site only opens in the evening late at night. Hence, you cannot visit this place in the morning.

It’s very far from the central city, and you can visit this place by auto rickshaw or private cabs. When I asked about the prices of the cabs, many said 2,500 INR (30 USD), which is way more than the ticket of the Chokhi Dhani itself. So, again, I booked an OLA bike which cost me around 200 INR (5 USD) for one side.

When you visit Chokhi Dhani, you have to buy a ticket for yourself, which will include the price of all the events and unlimited vegetarian Rajasthani food. This resort has tons of things to do, and it will be one of the best solo nights you can ever have.

The resort showcases the rural lifestyle of Rajasthani people, their cooking style, dressings, and you’ll feel very grounded in this place. There’ll be many magic shows, cultural dances, puppet shows, and elephant rides, and you can spend 4-5 hours at this place.

Again a must-visit place if you’re on a Jaipur trip.

Jaipur Itinerary – Day 02

After a tiring Day 1 in Pink City, you can have the leverage to start slow on Day 2. On this day, you’ll cover most of the tourist spots near the central city without any rush to reach farther locations.

places to visit in jaipur roaming jack for solo travelers

Well, Hawa Mahal needs no introduction. The most iconic monument of Pink City is located at the heart of the city center and is reachable by almost every public transport.

Hawa Mahal gets open in the morning, and you can time your visit accordingly as per your schedule. I visited this place around 10 AM when there was a minimal crowd and that was what I wanted to click the pictures.

The place truly lived up to its hype, and I really liked this monument’s structural design and architecture. There are four floors, and each floor has something unique of its own.

I didn’t opt for a tour guide for this place; however, if you want to know the in-depth history of the monument, you’ll find many tour guides offering their services at the entry gate of Hawa Mahal.

Time To Spend:  2-3 hr on average

Jantar Mantar

Jantar mantar-jaipur-roamingjack

Jantar Mantar is within walking distance of just 10 minutes from the Hawa Mahal, so you can visit this place next. It also opens early in the morning, and you can cover both these places in 2-3 hours.

Jantar Mantar is famous for its stone-built astronomical instruments, which were used to locate planets and seek time in ancient times. Many things will amaze you about this place, like how the mechanisms used to work and how everything depended on sun rays, and you’ll love the concept.

It’s advisable to hire a tour guide for this place, as the instructions written on the astronomical instruments are usually not apparent. Guides are always available at the entrance of this place, and you can hire them at a minimal price.

How To Reach:  Any Public Transport

City Palace

city palace-jaipur-roamingjack

After knowing the astronomical history at Jantar Mantar, you can next visit the City Palace, which is located at a 5 min walkable distance.

City Palace is well-known for its luxurious interior, stays, and royal residence. This tourist spot is perfect for someone who wants to relive the royal lifestyle of Rajasthani kings and emperors.

The palace has a heritage look, surrounded by lush green gardens and trees. There is a market, museum, and many things inside this palace that will keep you engaged throughout your time of visit.

However, I skipped this place because of its high ticket price. The ticket price was around 400 INR back then, and you also need a tour guide to understand all the crafts inside which will cost 200 INR, a total of 600-700 INR (10-12 USD). I just visited the outside of this palace, admired its beauty, clicked pictures, and went to my next location.

Albert Hall Museum

Albert Hall Museum-jaipur-roamingjack

The famous Albert Hall Museum is the next thing you can include in your 2-day Jaipur Itinerary. It is just 2kms from the Jantar Mantar, and you can take a tuk-tuk or an autorickshaw to reach its entrance.

I highly recommend you visit this place on your Jaipur trip because you’ll love this museum. The museum has preserved tons of ancient artifacts and war tools. You’ll find arrows, swords, currencies, sculptures, maps, mummies, and many more things that are hundreds of years old.

The museum is divided into 2-3 floors, and each floor has a different set of artifacts. You can spend 2-3 hours in this place and will still feel it needs more time to explore everything.

Shopping At Jaipur Bazaars

Go Shopping Spree In The Popular Jaipur Markets

Now that you’ve covered all the major historical places of Jaipur, you can visit its famous markets or bazaars. Jaipur has beautiful shopping hubs, and you can take many things to your home.

Popular Shopping Bazaars In Jaipur:

  • Johari Bazaar (famous for gemstones, jewelry, necklaces)
  • Tripolia Bazaar (famous for jewelry, paintings, carpets)
  • Chandpol Bazaar (famous for marbles, enamel ornaments)
  • Kishanpol Bazaar (famous for wooden sculptures)
  • Bapu Bazaar (famous for leather products and shoes/jutis)

Make sure to negotiate well enough before you buy an expensive item from the streets of Pink City. Sometimes, you can find the same deal at a much lower price after looking out the prices on 3-4 shops.

You can end the day in Jaipur by visiting the markets and having dinner at the popular cafes and restaurants of Jaipur.

I had the bus back to Delhi in the evening on Day 2 itself, so I spent the rest of the day shopping and roaming the streets.

That’s it in the 2 Day Itinerary of Jaipur, which I covered under 5,000 INR. You can customize the itinerary, add or subtract the tourist spots, or even reverse Day 1 or Day 2, as per your comforts and schedule. In the end, you must enjoy every hour in this beautiful city of India.

Budget Breakdown Of Jaipur Trip For 2 Days

Here is the budget breakdown of my Jaipur solo trip for two days:

  • Volvo Bus from New Delhi (Both Ways) –  1,200 INR (15-20 USD)
  • Hostel Stay (1 Day) –  300 INR (5-7 USD)
  • Transportation In The City (2 Days) –  1,100 INR (15-20 USD)
  • Sightseeing Charges (including Chokhi Dhani) –  1,200 (15-20 USD)
  • Foods/Meals (2 Days) –  1,200 (15-20 USD)
  • Shopping – Miscellaneous

You can always modify your budgets according to your spending habits and traveling style. I usually don’t prefer eating in luxurious restaurants and pick street food most of the time.

Best Time To Visit Jaipur

When planning your trip to Jaipur, the weather should be the first thing you must consider before visiting this beautiful city. The summers in Jaipur get scorching hot, with temperatures as high as 45°C/113°F. The pollution, dust, and humidity make it more worse in the peak summer times.

Although you can plan your Jaipur trip at any time of the year, the best time to visit Jaipur is from September to March, when the weather stays on a bit cooler side. Also, winters are the peak tourist season in Jaipur; hence, it’s advisable to pre-book your accommodations to plan a perfect budget trip for yourself.

You can also avoid the monsoon months of India (July-August), as you don’t want to visit the monuments dripping in rain showers.

How To Get Around In Jaipur?

The Pink City has a lot of public and private transportation options for the general public and tourists. If you’re visiting Jaipur for the first time, you’ll find plenty of transport options to tour the city without any issues.

You can take local buses, government mini busses, private cabs, tuk-tuks, rickshaws, metro, OLA, UBER, and cycles as per your comfort. All the public transports are available from early morning till late at night.

The cheapest mode of transportation in Jaipur is local buses and tuk-tuks compared to private cabs. If you’re on a budget trip, you can travel the whole city by public transport to save your money.

Common Frequently Asked Questions

Below are the common queries of people who visit Jaipur for the first time:

Are 2 Days Enough In Jaipur?

Jaipur is not a big city that will require a week to cover. At most, 3-4 days are enough to explore the Pink City if you’re taking too much time at a place. No matter how many days you stay in Jaipur, I urge you to keep at least two days in Pink City to explore its authentic charm.

How Much Budget Is Required For Jaipur Trip?

I covered my solo 2D/3N Jaipur trip in 5,000 INR (60-70 USD). If you’re visiting Jaipur with your family or planning a luxurious trip, you can expect your journey to be somewhere around 8,000 – 12,000 INR (100-150 USD). Again, it depends on your style of traveling and your negotiation skills.

Is Jaipur Safe For Solo Woman Travelers?

Definitely Yes. Jaipur is the capital city of Rajasthan and has many security cameras and security at the popular tourist spots. If you’re a woman solo traveler, Pink City will welcome you with love with no possible risks. However, you should ensure to dress in suitable clothes and avoid roaming around at late night hours.

What Are The Common Scams In Jaipur?

Jaipur is a clean and authentic city, and I didn’t encounter any scams or mishaps on my solo trip. However, you should be aware of the pickpockets in public transport and crowdy places. Also, you should avoid overpaying at tourist spots.

Which Language Is Widely Spoken In Jaipur?

The people of Jaipur widely used Hindi as their native language. If you don’t know Hindi, you will also find plenty of people communicating in English at all the tourist places. If you’re a non-English speaker, it’s a great idea to use Google Translator or hire a guide for yourself to communicate in the city.

I hope this article will help you plan your Jaipur trip in a budgeted way and make your journey more memorable. Let me know in the comments section how you’re planning for your Jaipur trip or if you’ve any queries or doubts about visiting the Pink City.

Places to visit in Jaipur in one day by private car

In our same day Jaipur local sightseeing trip you and your family will be visiting the following sites of interest :

1. City Palace, Jaipur

1 Day Jaipur Local Sightseeing Tour by Car City Palace

The glorious City Palace of Jaipur is one of the most frequented tourist attractions of Jaipur and the first place to visit with our one day private trip. This famous palace was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh between the years 1729 to 1732.

The outer wall of the palace was built by Jai Singh II, but the palace itself has undergone several renovations and changes over the years, with some of them having been done as recently as in the 20th century.

The vast complex of the palace occupies one seventh of the walled city. The City Palace used to be the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur for all his courtly affairs. The palace is intricately planned with a special focus on division of the complex into a series of courtyards, buildings and gardens.

The architectural style of the City Palace is an amalgamation of the Shilpa Shastra along with Rajput, Mughal and European styles. The palace was built using red and pink sandstone and has three gates named ‘Tripolia Gate’, ‘Udai Pol’ and ‘Virendra Pol’.

The gorgeous courtyards, manicured lush green gardens, splendid edifices and meticulous stonework make City Palace a perfect blend of design, art, colour and culture.

Must see \ Things to do: Pay special attention the the three gates and the carvings on them.

2. The Hawa Mahal, Jaipur

1 Day Jaipur Local Sightseeing Tour by Car The Hawa Mahal

Hawa Mahal is a world famous architectural marvel that stands at the intersection of the main road of Badi Chaupad and in the busy market, having a private cab allows you to reach here easily. It has emerged as the signature landmark of this city and was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in the year 1799.

Hawa Mahal derives its name from its unique structure, which is a mesh of small windows that brings cool winds into the palace and keeps the palace cool and comfortable during the harsh heat of the hot summer months. Hawa Mahal is built in the Rajput architectural style and has been constructed out of red and pink sandstone.

The Palace’s pyramidal structure resembles a crown, and is embellished with a myriad of tiny, intricately designed windows. The Hawa Mahal palace is a five floor storey building and each floor houses uniquely decorated chambers.

A beautifully crafted fountain welcomes you inside the main palace, which leads to the upper level floors via the ramp. There are no stairs in this building. The top floor of the palace offers a brilliant view of the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Sireh Deori Bazaar.

There is also a small museum in the campus which holds some rich relics and miniature paintings. You can buy some gorgeous souvenirs from the small shops near the Hawa Mahal.

Must see \ Things to do: You can enjoy a few quiet, peaceful moments here, enjoying the view and the cool breeze.

3. Jantar Mantar, Jaipur

1 Day Jaipur Local Sightseeing Tour by Car Jantar Mantar

Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is our next stop in this Jaipur one day local sightseeing tour, it is the largest stone astronomical observatory in the world. This ancient marvel is home to nineteen incredible instruments built out of stone and brass. This observatory took five years to be constructed and was built by Raja Sawai Jai Singh between 1727 and 1733.

This astonishingly accurate construction and placement of instruments allows a well-read observer to note the position of heavenly bodies with his naked eye alone. The main reason why this vast observatory was built was to study and gather information about space and time as was known back then.

The instruments here pertain to Egypt’s Ptolemaic astronomy and follow three classical celestial coordinates – horizon-zenith local system, the equatorial system and the ecliptic system – to track the positions of heavenly bodies.

This observatory is also the proud owner of the world’s largest sundial. These instruments still work as well and accurately as before and have seen no damage through the centuries.

Jantar Mantar is the perfect monument to witness the marvel of mathematical, scientific and engineering precision. Jaipur’s Jantar Mantar is also the largest one as compared to its other counterparts in the North of India. It is a must visit in this one day trip, especially for architecture and astronomy enthusiasts!

Must see \ Things to do: The symmetrical and asymmetrical structures offer a unique opportunity for photographers!

4. Birla Temple, Jaipur

1 Day Jaipur Local Sightseeing Tour by Car Birla Temple

Next up on our one day Jaipur sightseeing package, you will find Jaipur’s Birla Temple on the Moti Dungri Hill. This temple was built in the year 1988 by the Birlas. A structural wonder made out of white marble, the complex of the Birla Temple reflects ancient Hindu architectural styles and modern design.

The walls of the temple portray intricate carvings of Hindu gods and goddesses and texts from the Puranas and Upanishads. The pictures of historical achievers, legends, philosophers and spiritual saints like Socrates, Christ, Buddha, Confucius have also been put up in the temple.

The primary deity of worship, Laxmi Narayan is carved out from a single piece of stone. Birla Temple draws a large number of devotees during Janmashtami. It is a surreal experience, both for pilgrims and travellers as the temple transports you to a different world and age altogether.

Must see \ Things to do: The idol of Ganesha is a must see as it appears almost transparent.

5. Albert Museum Hall, Jaipur

1 Day Jaipur Local Sightseeing Tour by Car Albert Museum Hall

Albert Museum Hall is famed as the oldest museum of Rajasthan. This beautiful museum borrows its name from the Prince of Wales, Albert Edward. The building is better known for its nighttime view when the entire building is lit up with bright yellow lights that glow in the evening and magnify the regal aura of the monument.

The galleries of the museum have a splendid collection of precious antiques and artefacts that include ancient coins, marble art, pottery and carpets. For all art and history lovers, this place is nothing less than heaven!

Must see \ Things to do: Look up and you’ll see its Indo – Saracenic inspired domes and intricately carved arches that have been constructed from sandstone.

6. Jal Mahal, Jaipur

1 Day Jaipur Local Sightseeing Tour by Car Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal is a slightly lesser known monument of Jaipur and it is located some 7 KM from the city center in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake so reaching here can be expensive unless you have a private rental cab. This low rise symmetrical Palace used to be the shooting lodge for the Maharajas.

Today it draws a significant number of photography enthusiasts and tourists who just want to relax by the banks of the lake. The palace is a blend of the Mughal and Rajput style of architecture. Entry inside the fort is prohibited, but you can appreciate the architecture of the fort from outside too.

Must see \ Things to do: In the evenings, the area is lit up and the palace lights are reflected in the lake, making it a magical and romantic view.

7. Amber Fort, Jaipur

1 Day Jaipur Local Sightseeing Tour by Car Amber Fort, Jaipur

Amber Fort looms over the city of Jaipur and is located on top of the Aravali Hill, across the Maotha Lake. A living relic of the grand Mewari the past, the fort pulls in over five thousand tourists daily. Amber Fort is constructed in pink and yellow sandstone and is a part of an extensive complex, built by Maharaja Man Singh in the 16th century.

Amer is a small town of as little as four square kilometres, but it once served as the capital city of Rajasthan. Tourists opt to take an elephant ride back to the fort or you can also walk all the way up.

Amber Fort is divided into four sections and each one of them is adorned with its separate entrance and courtyard that encloses several palaces in its complex.

Must see \ Things to do: A fifty minute long light and sound show that is held every evening at the Amber Fort – it is an excellent way to know more about the fort’s history.

8. Sunset at Surya Mandir

1 Day Jaipur Local Sightseeing Tour by Car Sunset at Surya Mandir

Surya Mandir of Jaipur is a part of the larger temple of Galta Ji. This temple is located in western region of the city. This temple was founded in the 18th century and served as the private temple for a courtier of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.

The temple’s greatest attraction is its elevation of 200 meters above the city, which brings with itself wonderful panoramic views, that are best viewed at sunset. The temple’s calm ambience, serene views and the pleasant short hike up the hill is an excellent way to get away from the hustle-bustle of the city for some spirituality and me-time.

Must see \ Things to do: Don’t forget to click a stunning photograph of the temple against the vividly painted sky at sunset.
