K-pop star Jay of ENHYPEN talks about WA roots, Fate Plus world tour

Jay Park doesn’t remember much about his childhood in Washington.

As a member of one of the world’s biggest Korean pop groups, ENHYPEN, he’s had much more on his mind — international tours, a Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade performance, being a Prada global ambassador — than the nine years he spent growing up near Seattle.

Since debuting with ENHYPEN in 2020, the 22-year-old multihyphenate singer-rapper-musician-dancer has experienced a whirlwind of stardom, amassing fans across the globe. Despite the sold-out tours and chart-topping albums, Park has been holding onto one particular dream for years: to perform in his hometown. He is finally making that a reality, with ENHYPEN’s April 28 concert at the Tacoma Dome. 

Known by fans simply as Jay, the mononymous musician spent the early years of his life in Federal Way, where his parents settled after they attended college in the Pacific Northwest. When Park was 9, his family relocated to Korea for his dad’s work at a travel agency. Despite this, the entertainer still has fond memories of the street he grew up on, the rainy weather and Seattle’s culinary specialties.

“I really love the food in Seattle,” Park said in an interview over Zoom in early April. “Clam chowder is still one of my favorite foods. I try to eat it all over the world.”

Park has only been back to Seattle once, just a few years after the move. 

After adjusting to his new home in a new country, quickly learning Korean and attending school, Park developed a love for all things music, including playing guitar, singing and dancing, and gravitated toward a career in the ever-growing, multibillion-dollar K-pop music industry. 

“Being a K-pop idol was the best solution to do all the things I wanted in music,” he said. “I wanted to be a multi-entertainer.”

While searching for a way to break into the industry, Jay says that he got a bit of help from another Seattle-area born star: Jay Park , formerly of K-pop group 2PM. Not only did the two share the same name and hometown, but their fathers were also friends. The former 2PM performer’s decade of experience in the industry came in handy for 22-year-old Park.

“I was able to talk to [Park’s] manager about what I should do to become a singer and what it would be like when I debuted,” the ENHYPEN idol said. 

Park eventually found his start training under label Big Hit Entertainment, now HYBE, developing his singing and dancing skills for almost three years before landing a spot on Korean music competition show “I-LAND” in 2020. 

He and 22 other trainees participated in the show, spending almost four months refining their star power and talents in hopes of winning the grand prize: being placed in a new boy band. The new group’s album would be produced by Big Hit Music founder Bang Si-Hyuk, best known as the producer who helped create BTS, a legendary K-pop group.

While Park was confident he would debut as a K-pop idol, he knew that it would likely be his “last chance to achieve this dream.” If he didn’t make it through in “I-LAND,” he would continue to learn about and make music, and likely return back to the U.S. to attend university.

“I didn’t think about it that far,” Park said. “But I probably would’ve wanted to go home to Seattle.”

But over the course of the show, Park proved his talents and his dream did come true, landing him in second place on “I-LAND” and selected for brand-new music group ENHYPEN.

Despite debuting in November 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the seven-member boy band quickly shot to fame. The key to ENHYPEN’s success: its musical versatility across genres and lyrical themes, the growing fan base who followed the group from “I-LAND” and backing from one of Korea’s most successful music labels. 

Today, ENHYPEN has more than 9 million monthly listeners on Spotify, five Billboard 200-charting albums and a world tour under its belt. The group’s Fate Plus Tour includes its first Seattle-area performance, which marks Park’s first Washington visit in almost a decade. The tour date also marks another special homecoming: one for Park’s mom, who attended college in Tacoma and will join him at the concert. 

“I’m really excited to look around my hometown, and with my fellow [ENHYPEN] members, too,” Park says.

ENHYPEN’s fans, known as ENGENEs, are just as excited for the group’s upcoming visit to the Seattle area. Several attending the Tacoma Dome show said they are planning projects to make Park feel especially appreciated. 

Sam Romanik, a 25-year-old fan from Burien, is printing 4,000 banners emblazoned with “Welcome home Jay” and ENHYPEN song lyrics to pass out at the concert. When Park looks out into the crowd, Romanik hopes he’ll see the banners and “feel comfortable and welcome home.”

For many Seattle-based fans, knowing they grew up in the same place as Park makes them feel even more connected to the group, and wanting to show up for their hometown hero. 

“Seattle will always welcome him home, and [we] want him to know that he has a place here,” said Rachel Ramirez, an ENHYPEN fan from Kent. “We want to be that supportive and safe place for them.”

Even though it’s been years since Park has been back to his hometown, he still carries pieces of Seattle with him everywhere, particularly his strong affinity for the Mariners. 

For as long as Park can remember, his family were “really crazy fans” of the Seattle baseball team, and that love has “kind of become part of [his] identity.” Aside from the Mariners Moose plushie in his bedroom, Park shows his Mariners pride onstage with his in-ear monitors, which are emblazoned with the team’s blue-and-green compass logo. 

But his strongest tie to the Seattle MLB team is actually his name: Park’s dad says part of the inspiration for it was beloved Mariners right fielder Jay Buhner. His dad’s constant references to Buhner “gave me the thought that he was almost like my second father,” laughs Jay.

It’s only fitting that following their almost sold-out Tacoma Dome concert, ENHYPEN will throw out the first pitch at the April 29 Mariners-Atlanta Braves game. Park admitted he is “a bit nervous,” but excited to be attending the game with his bandmates. He and fellow ENHYPEN members Ni-ki and Heeseung are practicing their pitch.

“I went there a lot as a child, but I don’t remember a lot of specific Mariners memories,” says Park. “It’s really exciting for this to be my first time there as an ENHYPEN member so I can create a new ‘first’ memory.”

The amazing ENHYPHEN are a South Korean boy band, consisting of seven multinational members: Jungwon, Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, and Ni-Ki. It was certified KMCA: Million, and Gold, and was later rereleased in January 2022, hitting No.1 again in South Korea and Japan, as well as in the US World chart. It was later certified Gold and triple-platinum. Their second studio album (and first Japanese studio album), Sadame, came out in October 2022 and went to No. 1 in Japan and was later certified platinum.

Update: ENHYPEN's Heeseung, Jake, And Jay To Halt Activities After Being Diagnosed With COVID-19

Heeseung is the third member of ENHYPEN to be diagnosed with COVID-19 this week.

On July 22, ENHYPEN’s agency BELIFT LAB announced that Heeseung had tested positive for COVID-19 following Jake and Jay ’s diagnoses.

Hello. This is BELIFT LAB. We would like to provide you with some information on ENHYPEN member Heeseung’s COVID-19 confirmation and adjustments in his activities. Heeseung tested positive from a rapid antigen test on July 22 (Friday). He is currently showing symptoms like a mild cold and is being treated at home away from the other members. In this regard, Heeseung will not be able to participate in ENHYPEN’s engagements for the time being. We will continue to provide an update on the artist’s plans on resuming his activities. AIl ENHYPEN members have been staying separately at a single-person residence, away from one another since July 21 (Thursday). Jungwon, Sunoo, and Ni-ki preemptively took self-tests on the morning and afternoon of July 22 (Friday) and the results came back as negative. Sunghoon took a rapid antigen test before the ‘Music Bank’ schedule and the result came back as negative. The company places the artists’ health as our top priority, and we will do everything we can to aid Heeseung in his speedy recovery and to ensure that he can resume his activities in full health. We will also diligently cooperate with the requests and guidelines of the healthcare authorities. Thank you.

ENHYPEN has already cancelled their music show appearances this week after two members were diagnosed with COVID-19.

On July 21, ENHYPEN’s agency BELIFT LAB announced that Jay tested positive for the virus and is currently receiving treatment in self-isolation. Therefore, he will not be promoting with his members for the time being.

Jay used a self-testing kit and tested positive on the morning of July 21 (Thursday). He promptly took a PCR test, which also came back positive. He is currently showing symptoms like mild sore throat and body aches and is being treated at home away from the other members. All the other ENHYPEN members also preemptively used self-testing kits on July 21, which came back negative for everyone. As such, Jay will not be able to participate in ENHYPEN’s schedule for the time being. We will continue to provide an update on when he will resume activities. Our company will place the artists’ health as our top priority, and we will do everything we can to aid Jay in his speedy recovery. We will also diligently cooperate with the requests and guidelines of healthcare authorities. Thank you.

ENHYPEN’s Jay Revealed How He’s Using BTS’ Advice Towards His “RAS” Moment

Weverse Magazine caught up with ENHYPEN ‘s Jay for an interview that released on December 24. Since ENHYPEN debuted not too long ago, many of the questions centered around their debut and how he felt about it.

One unexpected question Jay received focused on his iconic “R.A.S” (Resentment. Angry. Shame) moments.

The interview took a turn in the direction of his iconic moments after the interviewer asked Jay about his parents:

When I saw your parents on the show, they looked like cheery people.”

I have an easy-going, friendly relationship with my parents. And the way my mom talked on the show was extremely blunt. My parents and I are very honest and straightforward—like, no matter what everyone might think of me, I’ll say what they need to hear and whatever I want to them. We’re all like that. Even on  I-LAND , it wasn’t that different from when I was a trainee. I only thought about wanting to put on a good show every week, and that way, I think, I showed my honest side. — Jay

This topic lead the interviewer to segway into Jay’s “RAS” moments.

And that’s when you had your “RAS” moment. What did you think when you saw that scene?

Whoa … Someone’s having a hard time! I can’t really remember that well anymore, but I must’ve had a really hard time. I think I was way too honest. — Jay

You’re taking BTS’s advice: “Enjoy your embarrassing moments.” 

Exactly. I don’t care about it at all anymore. I ignore it; I think, it is what it is, and there’s no way to take it back. Even after I die, it’ll still be floating around the Internet, like my ghost. So I just kind of gave up on that. — Jay

One of the reasons you had that “RAS” moment on  I-LAND  was because you couldn’t get the part you really wanted. Do you like the parts you have now?

Yes. I really like them and, for the hook in the chorus, Sunghoon’s part and mine are pretty much identical which are repeated. It was actually my dance move for Sunghoon’s part and his move for my part at first, but it was decided later it would fit the mood better if the choreography was changed, so they ended up switched. The first way wasn’t bad either, but I think the changed version suited both of us much better. — Jay

Eric Nam Gets ENHYPEN’s Jay and Jake to Open Up on “The Daebak Show”

Behind the scenes with jay and jake: from personal passions to group dynamics.

The Daebak Show , hosted by the multifaceted artist Eric Nam , bridges fans and the K-pop scene. It offers people a deep dive into the lives of their idols through casual yet insightful conversations. In a recent episode, ENHYPEN members Jay and Jake opened up about their personal and shared experiences.

Jay candidly shared his initial apprehensions about his English proficiency. Having spent more time in Korea than in Seattle, he felt out of touch with the language. He was nervous that he would find it hard to express himself on The Daebak Show because Eric is fluent in English. But his concerns proved to be unfounded. When the interview started, Jay surprised himself by communicating his thoughts in clear, perfectly accented English. His time living oceans away from his birthplace hadn’t dulled his linguistic skills.

Still on the topic of languages, Jay revealed his attempt to learn French. Using books and YouTube as his primary resources, he did his best to learn the language on his own, without a tutor to guide him. While he’s made commendable progress, he’s considering formal lessons in the future.

Interestingly, Jay ‘s journey into K-pop wasn’t driven by a lifelong dream. He was street-casted by a company, which ignited his interest in dancing. This led him to HYBE and, later, to the first season of I-LAND . Today, Jay stands as a testament to the power of fate, echoing sentiments shared by Eric and his fellow ENHYPEN member Jake .

Speaking of Jake , his first impression of Jay was beyond amusing. He recalled Jay ‘s penchant for man buns, headbands, and oversized glasses. He also humorously pointed out the other boy’s unique walk, which always made him look like he was in a rush.

The interview took a musical turn when Jay reminisced about his audition. He remembered singing “ Fall ” by Crush in an attempt to showcase his versatility as an artist. Jake , on the other hand, is a massive fan of Post Malone . He’s been listening to the American rapper’s latest album often lately. He credits BTS as the catalyst for his interest in performing .

Jake ‘s journey into the world of dancing and singing felt natural to him. He expressed gratitude toward his parents for their unwavering support. As he tells it, their encouragement was a pillar of strength, especially during challenging times. 

Jake confessed to Eric that he’s the type of guy who usually breaks down when things go south, but his parents’ sage advice on coping with problems has helped him so much over the last few years.

An engaging “Daebak Show” episode 

Group dynamics play a pivotal role in ENHYPEN ‘s success. Jake highlighted their practice of holding regular meetings. These sessions, which took place often in the past, facilitated open communication among members. But as all seven grew closer to each other, they found that they didn’t need to talk like that to work things out.

A rather eerie revelation was the location of the I-LAND building. Situated next to a cemetery, it was rife with ghostly encounters. Jay humorously recounted his determination to debut, even if it meant cohabiting with spirits.

In a lighter segment, they talked about who they’d want to travel with if they had time. Given their similar fashion tastes, Jake expressed his desire to go on vacay with Ni-ki to shopping destinations like Paris. Jungwon was Jay ’s first choice, but he also said he’d like to travel with Ni-ki . They said Sunghoon would make a relaxing vacation buddy because he can be quiet whenever he wants.

The Daebak Show provided a rare yet welcome glimpse into the boys’ lives. Their candid revelations and light-hearted moments made for a truly engaging episode, further endearing them to their fans. – K-Pop News Writer

ENHYPEN Talk ‘Orange Blood’ Era and What They’re Taking Into 2024

We can all see a little bit into the future. Take, for example, a fan of boy group ENHYPEN . In November 2020, just after the band’s debut, that fan could have foreseen (and hoped) that the group would still be releasing music together in 2023. It’s a modest vision, a safe bet.

So safe, in fact, that the reality of what ENHYPEN accomplished in 2023 reads like a fever dream in comparison. In September, for example, the group headlined two dates at the Tokyo Dome, Japan’s largest music venue, where they performed for nearly three-hours each night and danced with half a dozen five-foot-tall Pikachus .

Ahead of the band’s second Tokyo Dome concert, courtyards surrounding the venue hummed with the fizzling anticipation of thousands of Japanese teens. Most were still in their school uniforms, having traveled to the Dome with friends as soon as class ended. When Teen Vogue asked a dozen of them, “What do you like so much about ENHYPEN?” all twelve gave the same answer. “What I like about ENHYPEN,” they said, “is that they inspire me to work harder.”

The seven members of ENHYPEN — Jungwon, Heeseung, Sunghoon, Jay, Jake, Sunoo, and Ni-Ki — are excellent role models for anyone willing to put in the work. The group booked the Tokyo Dome shows less than three years after their November 2020 debut (and almost exactly three years after the Sep. 18, 2020 finale of the reality show that formed them, I-LAND ), the fastest for any K-pop boy band. Four of their albums have cracked the top 20 of the Billboard 200. This year, they were appointed as ambassadors to Italian fashion house Prada and were the second artist tapped to join the Pokémon Company’s new “Music Collective” (hence the dancing Pikachus). After the two Tokyo Dome shows, the group toured the states with stops in Los Angeles, Glendale, Houston, Dallas, Newark, and Chicago. And, because the grind never stops, ENHYPEN released their newest album, Orange Blood , on Nov, 17.

With so much behind them, and so much ahead, what are Jungwon, Heeseung, Sunghoon, Jay, Jake, Sunoo, and Ni-Ki looking forward to in 2024? We invited them to the Teen Vogue offices and let them run wild with magazines, glue, and a Polaroid camera. Over sodas and Korean BBQ-flavored Cheetos, the seven members cut and pasted their personal visions for 2024 and discussed the new dreams they hope to make a reality.

The overall message of my board is that I will continue doing what I like in 2024: singing, traveling, all the things I like. The overall message is that I'm just going to keep doing my thing.

Teen Vogue: You’ve added stickers of tomatoes and carrots, do you like those?

Sunoo: Ah, I don’t like them, but they’re good for me. And I balance them out with doughnuts.

Jay: It’s like he has one plus and one minus, and they even out.

TV: Is there anything you want to change in 2024 or get better at?

Sunoo: I'm a pretty spontaneous person so I don't have a fixed plan for 2024. But I guess I'll probably be into something, like learning new things or something that I like. I’ll just be free and be myself.

TV: Are there other members of the group who are also spontaneous? Why do you describe yourself that way?

Sunoo: I guess I am the spontaneous one and everyone else is more of a planner, in a sense. I think I'm quick in finding something that I like. And once I find something that I like, I'm right into it. So I don't plan out in advance and, in that sense, I'm kind of spontaneous.

TV: Is there something you recently dove into like that?

Sunoo: I’m super into [the K-drama] Moving. I don’t have large chunks of time to binge watch shows but I watch it whenever I have time.

TV: Is there anything you want to leave behind in 2024?

Sunoo: [Pauses to think] Ah! I did a lot of shopping for clothes recently. So I might leave behind some of my clothes, like reshape my wardrobe.

TV: Did your style change?

Sunoo: Sort of. I bought a lot of funky, hipster style stuff. It's kind of different from my “cute” image, these clothes are more edgy. So it was a challenge for me. For example, I got a beanie recently. I never usually wear it that much. But I think it's kind of hip to wear. It’s a new style for me.

TV: Jake, tell us about your board.

Jake: It looks like a kindergartener’s artwork [Jungwon and Sunghoon laugh] . There's a little number one, because we want to be number one. And on the left… I want to be able to travel more, because we never got to really go on a proper vacay and I kind of want to go feel the nature a little bit. I just put these smiley faces, I don’t know why [laughs]. And this side is sort of like the musical side. I like hip-hop. I want to be able to try and explore different types of music in 2024. And because we have a song called “Blossom” I have a flower. I added the phases of the moon because that’s the image on our tour shirt and I want to end the tour well before we go into 2024.

TV: What’s one thing you want to leave in 2023?

Jake: Being able to stop worrying about stuff, you know? I want to get rid of that thing I have, because I always worry too much about everything. In 2024, I just want to be able to just enjoy it and not worry about things so much, just chill.

TV: What's something you worry about the most?

Jake: I feel like as an artist or celebrity that goes on onstage I think everyone sort of worries a little bit about how they look and how they appear. But I feel like I learned through experience that just being happy, like just being yourself, is what makes you most attractive. The fans like that the most. Whenever I go up on stage there's a little bit of myself that kind of worries about how I look and [if] my fans are going to like that. But just getting rid of that thought I feel is going to help me grow more.

TV: What's your plan to do that? Do you have something you tell yourself before you go on stage?

Jake: Right now, because we’re on tour, before I go on stage I always tell myself to just have fun. Because me having fun on stage is going to show to the crowd. If I have fun, they’re going to have fun. I try to make the time as enjoyable as possible.

TV: Jungwon, can you tell us about your vision board?

Jake: He’s gonna do it in English.

Jungwon: [In English] English? OK. I wrote “the perfect ENHYPEN.” “Friends” is for our members. “Love” is for our ENGENE.

Jake: What’s that? [Points to muscular man]

Jungwon: I realized I have to… [switches fully to Korean]

Jake: [Laughs] He tried!

Jungwon: We've been on tour and I think the biggest takeaway from this tour was that I really need to do some more cardio just to be able to maintain that energy for the shows to make our performance better for fans.

TV: I once saw a video of two members of TXT running on a treadmill and singing . Are you going to do that?

Jungwon: I saw it, too! And no [Laughs] . [To continue], for the “love,” in 2024 and even after, I just want to continue getting more love from our fans but also paying it back to our fans. And for “friends” I thought of our members, like all of us as friends. There's a line in our song “Blessed-Cursed” that goes “we're jumping in together.” So this person and the dog are diving together and I thought of like, “We're jumping into this experience together. We're in this together.”

TV: You drew yourself in black. Is that like an alter ego?

Jungwon: Ah, no. I added it just for fun.

TV: What do you want to be better at in 2024?

Jungwon: My answer is gonna be very similar to Jake's. I just want to be less conscious of what other people think of me. It's not about how I look on stage but more in daily life. I'm not leaving it completely behind, but I want to be less conscious of how other people will think of me and things like that. I just want to be in that moment and really enjoy it.

Like what Jake just said, I think the mindset is, “Our fans are here because they love us already.” So we're just gonna have fun and it's gonna come through in our performance, so let's have fun together.

Ni-Ki: First, I have the Prada logo because I want to be at their show again next year and be in their outfits and, you know, maybe show different sides to our fans in general by trying different things. I have a flower there because I just want to be beautiful in the eyes of our fans. Also, we also have a song, “Blossom,” that's been on my mind recently. I've been thinking a lot about that performance, so that's also why I have the flower there. In the middle I put ENHYPEN and Engene because, obviously, we’re together.

Jake: Always together.

TV: What do you want to leave behind in 2024?

Ni-Ki: Whenever I make very minor mistakes on stage it affects me a lot, like mentally. It has an impact on me afterwards. So I want to leave that behind. Next year, I just want to be more confident. I just want to be a little more optimistic. I need to remember, “It's all just the process of learning from your mistakes.”

Jake: He’s really harsh on himself, so he’ll get caught up in a little, minor mistake and won't be able to fully enjoy the rest of the concert. He’ll think about that too much. Which I understand because I used to do that.

TV: Why don't you anymore?

Jake: A couple months ago I had the same problem. And it's sort of going back to what I said earlier but people don't really look at the mistakes as that big.

TV: Right, I don’t think anyone notices.

Ni-Ki: [Laughs and nods]

Jake: I told myself that. And rather than being caught up on mistakes it’s better to just move on and do a better performance the next time.

Heeseung: My board is a map of the U.S. Obviously, we're on a U.S. tour. And this [person] is me.

TV: What are you drinking?

Heeseung: I don’t know. The overall message here is that I need to grow up more to be in the top three.

TV: Top three of what?

Heeseung: This industry. The whole music scene. We have to — as ENHYPEN — we have to grow. And I have to grow personally, too. I have to try more and more. I added a dollar sign because I have to earn my money. Oh, and I want to be sexy [laughs].

These lines connect all these components and then the lines go out of the frame and into the world.

TV: What's up there on the corner, “To Ask?”

Heeseung: It’s almost like this board is my mind right now. And you are asking the questions. So I have this “to ask” because I'm kind of asking these questions to myself.

TV: What are some things you want to leave in the past in 2024?

Heeseung: I think I want to get rid of everything that makes me doubt myself. I think I've been managing to get rid of a lot of them already but I want to continue doing that so that I can be really self confident and keep on going.

TV: So what are some of the things that you've gotten rid of?

Heeseung: It's nothing special. Maybe a lot of self-deprecation, negative self talk. I think I got rid of my habit of checking on people’s reactions. Whenever I did something, I used to check on how people react, but I have gotten rid of that.

Jay: My board looks a little funny.

Jungwon: [Points at where Jay has cut out his own head and placed it on muscular bodies] You’re copying me! [All laugh]

Jay: I just focused on my personal goals for next year. I'm a person that has too many goals and I can’t handle it, [I get overwhelmed]. So I just made three goals. First, I’ve realized that health is very important. On this tour, I had some physical issues because of my weak body.

TV: You said that so bluntly.

Jay: [Laughs] It’s sad but it’s true. So I added “recover faster, go further.” I want to build a more healthy and strong body, try some new workouts next year.

TV: You and Jungwon can go to the gym together.

Jay: Yeah! [Jungwon gives a thumbs up]

I’m really into guitar these days so I just want to keep going with that. I didn't add any words on [over the black and white photo] but it means, like, “Let's stop looking at bad things and only look at good things.” That’s my mental goal for next year.

TV: How have you taught yourself to focus on the good things? What are the benefits of focusing on good things and ignoring the bad?

Jay: I believe it all depends on the mindset. I've found that I can conquer obstacles more effectively when I adopt a positive rather than a negative perspective. The outcome might not always be fully dependent on the mindset, but I just think that maintaining a positive mindset is what enables me to stay healthy, in terms of both inner and physical strength.

TV: What are some other things you want to leave in the past next year?

Jay: I’m always giving it my all, but there's always room for more growth. I aim to leave behind my less experienced self in the past, and start the new year fully embracing all the valuable experiences I’ve gained in 2023.

TV: Is there something else that you want to change about yourself in 2024?

Jay: Singing and dancing is always the focus for me when it comes to growth. Additionally, I aspire to improve my guitar skills, as I hope to share yet another fun stage with ENGENEs. Over the past year, I learned a lot about my shortcomings and areas I need to improve on both on and off the stage. Hopefully, I’ll be able to close out next year as a better artist and person, feeling a greater sense of satisfaction about how much I’ve grown.

In the interest of physical well-being, I'm considering incorporating meditation into my daily routine. Also, once I become more skillful in playing the guitar, I aspire to delve into learning new musical instruments like the bass, harmonica, or saxophone. I think these instruments would be a great addition to our performances on stage. Learning a new language is also on my radar, if the time allows! I'm eager to explore a language beyond Korean, English, or Japanese, [so] I’d be able to communicate even more closely with the ENGENEs.

Sunghoon: I think I messed up. [All laugh] .

Jay: It looks like something out of a horror movie.

Sunghoon: “Just do it” is my motto. I'm not sure if I'm practicing it that much. But I want to practice it more next year so I just want to be in that mindset just you know, just push through. So that's the key point here.

Jake: What’s the dollar sign for?

Sunghoon: I want to make some money of course. [All laugh] I added some vitamins and the image of a [healthy] body because I’ve caught a cold many times, so I just want to take care of myself more in terms of my health. “Love” symbolizes my love for Engene. And the whole board is supposed to be on fire, which is why I have all the red.

Jay: It’s like the poster of the movie It.

TV: What are some things you want to leave behind in 2024?

Sunghoon: I believe every aspect of my life has played a role in shaping the person I am today, so there’s nothing I’d specifically like to leave behind. I just want to continue adding more layers to it. Maybe something might come up down the road but, as of now, I don’t think there is anything in particular. If I absolutely had to choose one, perhaps it would be my youth. Not that I want to leave behind my youth entirely, but I wish to be a more mature version of myself in 2024.

TV: Is there anything you want to change about yourself in 2024?

Sunghoon: I wouldn’t exactly call this a “change,” per se, but I do see a lot of room for improvement in many areas. So my goal is to be a more refined version of myself. I’m determined to work even harder and present a more professional and versatile version of myself. There’s always room for progress.

Singing and dancing is always a given, and in addition, I want to pick up the drums in the coming year because it’s something that’s piqued my interest lately. Beyond that, skiing is a winter hobby I enjoy, so I’ll try to hit the slopes whenever I can.

Seattle Mariners welcome ENHYPEN’s Jay, Heeseung, Ni-ki for ceremonial first pitch

The Seattle Mariners welcomed K-pop boy band ENHYPEN members Jay, Heeseung and Ni-ki at the T-Mobile Park for the ceremonial first pitch on April 29. 

During the Mariners batting practice, the members were able to go out on the field to take in the sights, play catch, and meet former Mariners player, Ichiro Suzuki. 

They then got ready to take the pitcher’s mound where Seattle native and lifelong Mariners fan Jay was surprised by a special video message on the scoreboard from former Mariners player, Jay Buhner, who he was named after.

The members then each lined up and took turns throwing out the first pitch in front of 2,000 ENGENEs (ENHYPEN fans).

Their appearance at the Mariners game comes in the midst of the US leg of ENHYPEN World Tour “Fate Plus,” which saw them perform at the Honda Center in Anaheim, and Oakland Arena in Oakland in California, and Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington. 

Additional shows will follow at Allstate Arena in Chicago on May 1 and UBS Arena in Belmont Park, New York on May 3.

The Tacoma Dome in particular marked a special hometown show for Jay who returned to the Seattle area for the first time in eight years.

During the concert, he said, “I’m standing with my six brothers and beloved ENGENEs… I never expected this would happen eight years ago. So, I truly want to say, please trust yourself and never give up. Your dreams also can come true.”

“Fate Plus” comes on the heels of the ENHYPEN World Tour “Fate”  which saw the group enchant over 327,000 ENGENEs across 13 cities and 21 shows. 

ENHYPEN made their momentous US stadium debut at Los Angeles’ Dignity Health Sports Park during the tour, while also setting the record for being the fastest K-pop boy group to host a solo concert at Tokyo Dome.

They will release a “Dark Moon” special album memorabilia on May 13.

Enhypen’s Jay, Heeseung, Ni-ki hit home run with ceremonial first pitch at Seattle Mariners’ game

F or avid fans of K-pop boy group Enhypen, it is no secret that Seattle-born Korean idol Jay was named after former Mariners player Jay Buhner.

During their visit to a Seattle Mariners game, Jay himself, a long-time fan, received a special video message on the scoreboard from another Jay—the baseball legend he shares his name with.

In a social media post by Major League Baseball (MLB), they shared a photo of Jay holding a ball with a caption, “Enhypen’s Jay is not only a Seattle native and lifelong Mariners fan…He was named after Mariners legend Jay Buhner.”

But that’s not all, as Enhypen’s Jay, Heeseung and Ni-ki hit a home run with their ceremonial first pitch at T-Mobile Park on Monday.

The trio of the seven-member group, amid their bustling US leg of the “Fate Plus” World Tour, took a break from captivating ENGENE (their fans) with their hard-hitting performances to enjoy some baseball.

Prior to their pitch, they soaked in the atmosphere, mingled with fans and even had the honor of meeting legendary Mariners player Ichiro Suzuki during the team’s batting practice, with more than a thousand or two fans cheering them on.

Their appearance at T-Mobile Park added another highlight to their world tour, which has seen them mesmerize audiences at venues across the US, including the Honda Center in Anaheim, the Oakland Arena in California and the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington.

For the Korean American member, returning to the Seattle area after eight years held particular significance, adding an extra layer of nostalgia to his idol journey.

The “Fate Plus” World Tour follows the resounding success of their previous “Fate” tour, where they toured across 13 cities with 21 shows.

Making history along the way, Heeseung, Jay, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, Jungwon and Ni-ki made their US stadium debut at Los Angeles’ Dignity Health Sports Park.

Enhypen gears up for another milestone with the release of their “Dark Moon” special album memorabilia on May 13, promising yet another wave of excitement for their fans.

ENHYPEN members have been making appearances at various brand events back-to-back. 

Recently, Ni Ki, Jungwon, and Jake were present at the Gentle Monster’s store opening in Tokyo followed by Ni Ki and Jungwon graced the Bulgari event , all happening within a week.

On March 18, Heeseung and Jay attended the Pomellato event in Seoul, dressed in a well-tailored suit. They sported some of the iconic pieces of jewelry from Pomellato, and pulled them off effortlessly.

Additionally, Jay and Heeseung were revealed as the fresh faces of the brand and are gearing up to kick off their collaboration in promotional endeavors soon.

They posed with the brand’s CEO Sabina Belli at the event. Besides all, Choi Ji Woo, Lee Bo Young, and Krystal attended the event.

ENHYPEN’s Jay threw the first pitch for the Seattle Mariners’ game on April 29. He was accompanied by bandmates Heesung and Niki. During the crowded match, a special moment caught the netizens’ attention, when Jay received a heartfelt video message from the legendary baseball player Jay Buhner.

On April 30, a video was shared on social media featuring Seattle Mariners’ Jay Buhner, who congratulated the ENHYPEN member on a successful ceremonial pitch at the game on April 29. Jay seemed to be touched by the legendary American baseball player’s words, whom he also admired a lot. After his successful first pitch, a surprising revelation piqued the K-pop fans’ interest.

According to a post made by MLB’s social media handles, Jay was in fact named after the Mariners’ legend and he is also a lifelong fan of the Baseball team.

Notably, the K-pop idol was also born and grew up for the most part of his life in Washington’s Seattle.

Earlier on August 20, 2022, Jake and Jay took turns throwing the first pitch at Dodger Stadium, celebrating Korean Heritage Month. Just like two years ago, on this day, the crowd went wild at their graceful sight, congratulation the band members.

ENHYPEN is a popular boy band created by HYBE’s subsidiary BELIFT LAB. All the members participated in Mnet’s music survival show I-LAND’s first season, which premiered in 2020.
