The best carry on luggage to buy in 2024
By Lauren Burvill and Charley Ward
It’s a rookie error that many of us have been guilty of – carry on luggage that’s too large, too heavy, or too uncomfortable to carry. I’m ashamed to admit that, despite having worked in travel for more than 10 years, I recently, and accidentally, overpacked my hand luggage on a flight from Australia to London. Much to the frustration of my fellow Qatar Airlines passengers, I had to do the embarrassing scramble of throwing what I could grab into our check-in suitcases. All that time spent organising was destroyed in a moment of panic.
If like me, you’ve been caught out at check-in, you’ll know that the wrong carry-on luggage can ruin a trip before it even begins. This is why thought and research are required when choosing the right cabin bag for your flight – even more so than for a check-in suitcase. To save you the admin, we’ve found the best luggage to stash in the plane’s overhead bins.
Which is the best carry-on luggage at-a-glance?

- Best light suitcase: July Carry On Light, 54X36X19cm, 1.8kg, £195
- Best budget price: Aerolite cabin luggage 50x40x20cm, 2.1kg, £59.99
- Best underseat cabin bag : Cabin Max Manhattan travel bag, 40X20X25, 0.5kg, £29.95
- Best travel backpack: Bellroy Transit Backpack, 53X36X19cm, 1.1kg, £239
Our favourite carry-on luggage picks for 2024
How we tested the best carry-on luggage
Every case on this list has been has been independently tested and reviewed by our editors Charley Ward and Lauren Burvill . We run each piece of carry-on luggage through a test in office, and then pass the cases on to members of the wider team to take with them on a flight for further testing. When testing, we look for overall quality, spinner wheels, TSA-approved locks, design features such as exterior pockets, charging ports or laptop compartments, and value for money. We also assess the weight and size, overall function and visual appeal.
The best hard shell carry-on luggage
Pros: Durable, easy to manoeuvre, compression pad and straps, comes with a laundry bag, multiple colour options.
Cons: Colours sell out quickly, light colours are prone to scuffs and scratches, 0.1cm over the height allowance of some airlines, including Ryanair.
Size: 55.1x34.8x22.9cm
Weight: 3.2kg
Away's recognisable original carry-on case is one of the best on the market – beloved by many of our editors and numerous celebrities, including Margot Robbie and Meghan Markle. As one of the first luggage brands to rethink suitcases through a millennial lens, Away has been cleverly perfecting its cases to combine equal parts style and function. The real highlight of this carry-on case is the quality, particularly the wheels. Inside, both mesh compartments can be firmly secured – one with a zip, the other with a compression system with straps – so there is plenty of packing space and your case will remain neatly organised.
Editor review: “I travel with this Away carry-on case all the time, particularly back and forth from London to Lisbon where I've been living for the last year. No matter how much I pack in this case, it's always so smooth and easy to navigate through busy airports thanks to its spinner wheels and sturdy frame,” Abigail Malbon , acting audience growth manager.
Pros: Lightweight suitcase, great value price, large range of colour options, multiple compartments inside, luggage sets available.
Cons: Only one of the internal compartments can be fully zipped up, lighter colours are prone to scuffs and scratches.
Size: 55x40x20cm
Weight: 2.8kg
If you're a frequent flyer looking for a zippy hard-shell suitcase, Antler's Clifton cabin bag is a winner. The durable yet lightweight polycarbonate case features a twist-grip telescopic handle, making it very easy to wheel it around the airport at speed. Not only is this case a great size and quality, but they also look smart too, with seven subdued shades to choose from.
Editor review: “I have this case in the mineral colour as part of the full travel set . This case is the one I use the most and it's just a dream to travel with. I really love the two zip-up pouches inside. If you don't travel with packing cubes, these can do a similar job and are ideal for storing delicates and toiletries,” Lauren Burvill , commerce editor.
Pros: Very light, impressively quiet, smooth action, scratch-resistant shell
Cons: Relatively small side, no laptop sleeve or additional pockets
Size: H54 x W36 x D19cm
Weight: 1.8kg
July asserts that this is the world’s lightest double-wheel suitcase, and while we can’t verify this claim, it’s certainly the lightest one we’ve ever used. As such, we’re crowning it our best lightweight luggage pick. This was much appreciated when manhandling it in and out of the overhead compartments, as was its whisper-quiet action, even while trundling over a notoriously bumpy pavement. This was something that truly impressed me. There are nine colours to choose from, and all July carry-ons and checked bags can be personalised.
Editor review: “I travelled with this recently on a weekend trip to Palma and managed to squeeze in four dresses, my washbag , straighteners and two pairs of shoes. Next time I’ll use some compression packing cubes to maximise capacity further. Overall it feels expensive, with a sturdy handle and strong polycarbonate shell that withstood several knocks on its first outing.” Charley Ward , commerce writer
Pros: Lightweight, 100-day trial policy, unlikely to scuff.
Cons: Colours appear brighter in real life, expandable handle is a little sticky.
Size: 50X33X23cm
The Canadian brand famed worldwide for its sleek backpacks recently launched its heritage hardshell luggage collection, including both checked luggage and a carry-on style. The compact and lightweight suitcases are made from a 100% polycarbonate EcoSystem™ Hardshell, with 70% of each suitcase made from recycled road barricade material. Inside the carry-on, the case has one large mesh zip compartment with an additional smaller pocket and compression straps on the other. We love the simplicity of it all, but be warned: the colours appear much brighter in real life compared to online – the pastel yellow shade, in reality, is closer to a neon tennis ball.
Editor review: “This carry-on suitcase is on the smaller side, but it's perfect for me as I do a lot of short trips. It means I never have to worry about which airline I'm flying with and what dimensions they allow. I've taken this with me on multiple trips, and it's very durable, showing virtually no signs of wear and tear to date. I also personally love the cheerful bright colour,” Sarah James , deputy digital editor.
Pros: Classic look, garment bag hook.
Cons: Not the most lightweight carry-on, being the heaviest on our list.
Size: 55x38x20cm
Weight: 4.6kg
Leave it to Bric's to create the most beautiful and functional hand luggage on the market. The heritage brand has been crafting travel bags and leather goods out of the Lake Como region since the 1950s. Their cabin case is a smaller version of their Bellagio suitcase, with a shell made from lightweight Makrolon® polycarbonate along with vegetable-tanned leather trimmings that not only look smart but also help to prevent scuffing. Inside the lined case features organisation pockets, a padded laptop sleeve and a garment bag hook and space for three hangers. As with all Brics luggage, the Bellagio suitcase comes with a five-year warranty.
Pros: Organisational pockets, zip-up divider, leather luggage tag, stylish design and interior.
Cons: Lighter colours are prone to scuffs and scratches, doesn't fit within Air France, Ryanair and Emirates cabin bag allowance.
Size: 56X45X25cm
The leather handles with contrast stitching, the little round logo – the little details that made us notice The Portable Porter's carry-on case. Inside there's even more to discover, the biggest surprise being the bespoke monogrammed lining (in the yellow case, it's a cheery multicoloured geometric print) made from recycled plastic bottles. On one side of the case are three pockets, including a full zip divider, and two smaller pockets – one with a water-resistant laundry inside, the other storing a round leather luggage tag. A compression pad and straps are on the other side of the case.
Pros: Smooth, sturdy spinner wheels and a textured finish add to its overall durability
Cons: No charger, could use a few additional pockets
Weight: 3.7kg
Dimensions: 55 x 35 x 23cm
As with the Aviator Grand, Paravel's carry-on is beloved for more than just its retro Wes Anderson - style designs. It's made using eco-friendly materials, like recycled zippers and a lining crafted out of upcycled plastic water bottles, and comes in beautiful shades like Scout Tan and Safari Green. Inside, one half zips fully closed and has an additional zip pocket of its own, while the other is covered by a compression board. It's a favourite of US Traveller senior editor Megan Spurrell, who has brought it on trips to Mexico City, Lisbon, Los Angeles, and more.
Pros: Comfortable handle, fairly easy to clean
Cons: Although the beige colour is incredibly pretty, it gets dirty very quickly; I would recommend a darker colour
Weight: 3.8kg
Dimensions: 58 x 40 x 25cm
Béis is a favourite luggage brand for our team over in the US, who’ve tried a number of its softside cases and weekender bags, before getting their hands on its carry-on. Unsurprisingly, it was a hit. “I would recommend this for a traveller who is an exclusive team carry-on member,” US commerce producer Paris Wilson says. She managed to fit at least 14 outfits, plus four pairs of shoes and two purses, inside on a recent trip to the Florida Keys. It’s lightweight and easy to manoeuvre: – “I was able to bring it down from the overhead bin myself as well as move it in and out of the trunk of the rental car easily” – and easy on the eyes as well: “I got so many compliments on how pretty the carry-on was while in the airport and on holiday. The colour is beautiful, it’s an ideal size, and the ribbing on the exterior adds some really cool dimensions.”
Pros: Smooth glide, TSA-approved combination lock, the expansion capabilities
Cons: Mistaken identity – given their popularity, get a unique colour or add your favourite sticker to the outer hard shell to help identify yours if you wind up checking it
Weight: 3.6kg
Dimensions: 56 x 36 x 23cm
We’ve tried several Away suitcases and the Flex is our pick for overpackers and times you need a little more space. It gives travellers an additional 2.25" of packing space when expanded, bringing the capacity up from just under 40L to 46.7L. Used by US Traveler journalist Lara Kramer for trips including a one-week trip to London, it earned points for rolling smoothly across almost any surface, thanks to its 360° spinner wheels.
Pros: Lightweight, durable, and easy to move around and lift
Cons: Only available in a few standard colours and there really isn’t anything that stands out about it to help you know it’s yours.
Weight: 2.9kg
Dimensions: 54 x 38 x 23cm
On the other end of the price spectrum, there is this hard side carry-on from Amazon. Thanks to its affordable price, roomy size, spinner wheels, and built-in TSA lock, it has racked up tons of positive reviews on Amazon. Our US associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny agrees with those reviews, calling it “an overpacker's dream suitcase.”
Pros: Compression straps and pad, easy to close, really good-looking
Cons: Not quite capacious enough
Weight: 3.9kg
Dimensions: 56 x 35 x 23cm
This particular designer carry-on may ring a bell for Succession fans – Carl Friedrik pieces were featured more than once during the show's run. It's also US editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs' go-to, who has brought it to Mérida in the Yucatan, his parents’ house in Connecticut for Christmas and Easter, to the North Fork of Long Island, and to Chicago. Outside, “This case is gorgeous – beautiful contrasts between the grey of the polycarbonate shell and the delicious slivers of warm leather.” Inside, he says, “There are two very useful sets of compression straps and one (removable, also useful) compression pad which one might as I did mistake for a laptop case at first glance.” And perhaps the highest praise: “After nearly a year of use, it still looks brand new.”
Pros: Stylish, removable hanging wash bag, luggage tag and jewellery pouch included, vibrant patterned inner
Cons: Only two wheels, relatively small
Size: 47 x 32 x 18cm
Weight: 3.5kg
With their vintage effect, striking leather straps and shiny gold locks, Steamline cases are head-turners. You'll certainly stand out among the boring black cabin bag cohort in the airport – and there are plenty of matching pieces to complete your set. This little carry-on case is lightweight and spacious enough to pack for two nights comfortably, with lots of little pockets to keep your jewellery and travel-sized toiletries easily in hand. We also appreciated the hanging washbag, which was a nice touch and one not seen in many cabin cases on this list. This suitcase handles fine with two wheels, but those used to a four-wheel spinner may balk a little to begin with at the lack of additional function.
The best carry-on luggage with external pockets
Pros: Four colour options, multiple internal pockets, outer pocket expands, great value price, one of the best lightweight suitcases we’ve tried.
Cons: 1cm over the height allowance of some airlines, including Ryanair.
Size: 56X35X23cm
Weight: 3.3kg
The zippy and lightweight Clifton cabin case is one of Antler's best sellers. The rolling polycarbonate suitcase has all that you could need for everyday travel – twist-grip handle, double lock, waterproof and mesh pockets inside – but what makes this stand out from other classic hard cases is the external pocket. The full zip pocket features multiple compartments as well as a padded slip pocket that can fit a tablet of 15.6-inch laptop, allowing easy-to-reach storage for all of your on-the-go items.
Pros: Won’t scuff or scratch, external zip-up pocket with padded laptop sleeve, internal compression pad, smart colour options.
Cons: Minimal internal pockets and zip-up compartments; can be difficult to align the closure and clasp it shut when the case is full.
Size: 55X38X25cm
Weight : 4.3kg
For a case that looks and feels like it means business, Carl Friedrik has you covered. Their carry-on case is all slick and shiny, from the studs lining the opening to the tan Italian leather handles and detailing. The snap-shut locks make this hard shell case stand out from the rest. Instead of fiddly zips, the case is secured with a unique aluminium lock frame – for extra security, you can use the combination lock feature. There is a zip on the external pocket, allowing for easy access and storage of your laptop and documents in the padded sleeve and additional compartments.
Editor review: “My favourite feature is the hard shell outer-casing which contains a convenient and safe pocket for a laptop. The lockable feature means all of your belongings are super safe. The only downside is that if you fill this case to the brim you'll struggle to shut it without fabric getting caught in the clasp,” Sophie Knight , visuals editor.
Pros: Lockable external zip-up pocket with multiple compartments, expandable zip system, compression. straps, large wheels, USB port charger.
Cons: No compression pad, prone to fingerprint marks, slightly cumbersome to reach the hidden USB port, power bank not included.
Size: 55X40X20cm
Makers of the Swiss Army Knife, Victorinox, have applied the same Swiss precision and innovative design to their luggage range. Their expandable global carry-on is one of their best sellers. It is full of secret compartments and features, from the lockable external pocket with four separate storage compartments to the USB port hidden behind a compartment that folds out to reveal a tiny ballpoint pen, luggage ID tag, and SIM card pin. While some cases sacrifice less main compartment room for the external pocket, this makes up for it with the expandable zip system, offering 20% additional space. Even though the weight is on par with the other cases on the list, this feels like a heavy-duty case thanks to the larger wheels, making it a suitable solution for navigating bumpy cobblestone streets.
Pros: Range of colours and finishes, zip-up mesh screens on both sides.
Cons: No compression pad, outer pocket does not expand.
Weight: 3.4kg
Engineered in Germany, Horizn Studios specialises in luggage with a lifetime warranty, made from all-vegan materials, and sent to you using neutral shipping. There's a lot to choose from – their Circle One range is made from a plant-based hard shell – but in terms of quality, price and function, our pick is the M5 cabin bag, a partly recycled hardshell case with a front laptop pocket, recycled polyester lining and enough space to last a five-day trip. The cabin bag comes with a luggage tag, and dust protector as standard, with the option to personalise the case or even upgrade to the smart version that comes with a removable charger and compression pad
Pros: External pockets, lightweight, great value price tag, next-day delivery with Prime.
Cons: Basic design, not the most durable suitcase on our list.
Size: 50x40x20cm
Weight: 2.1kg
When it comes to size, weight, price, design and quick delivery, Aerolite's cabin suitcase (available on Amazon ) ticks all the boxes. The dimensions of the case fit within most airline allowances including British Airways and easyJet, while the weight of the case comes in at a very light 2.3kg. Of all the features, it's the two outer pockets that make this one a winner, plus it has a great value price.
Editor review: “I've travelled with this case a couple of times on short city breaks. For the price, it does a good job, and the external pockets are handy for easy access. If you load up the case too much, especially the top, when it's standing upright, the case can often topple over. But otherwise, it's a great budget option,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.
Pros: External zip-up pocket, removable compression pad, laundry and shoe bags.
Cons: Scuffs but comes with a sponge for rectifying, front pocket zipper can be difficult to manage.
Size: 55x35x22cm
Weight : 3.5kg
Born out of Vancouver, Monos approached luggage with a less is more design philosophy, as seen in their sleek carry-on pro case. The hardshell style has three interior pockets and three zippered pouches, all accessed from the front pocket, making it incredibly easy to travel with your laptop and providing a safe place for documents, passports and chargers. I greatly appreciated this feature as it saved me the embarrassment of rummaging through my suitcase on the airport floor. The interior of the carry-on has a removable compression pad and a zippered pocket for flat items. My favourite features were the silver ion-coated laundry bag and the two shoe bags. I recently took the case on a weekend break and loved how the compartments let me separate my different clothing items and create an easy-to-manage laundry bag once I arrived home. Amber Port
Editor review: “I've taken this chic yet practical hardside suitcase with me to Crete, Paris and Chichester (we love a staycation!), and my favourite part has to be the front pocket. It gives me easy access to essential items like my passport, wallet and chargers while keeping them organised and, most importantly, safe,” Amber Port , Audience Growth Manager.
Pros: Lightweight, adjustable external straps, zip-up dividers, range of colours.
Cons: None that we can see.
Size: 51x32.5x23cm
Weight: 2.42kg
If you're just needing a suitcase to take on weekend breaks, look for durable and roomy styles with trolley wheels that can handle pesky cobblestone streets. This Eastpak cabin case has clever adjustable straps on the outside so you can ensure your luggage will fit within the allocated size allowance.
Pros: Front pocket, a rarity for hard-shell bags, plus more internal compartments; comes with a removable charger
Cons: Not expandable, so less forgiving for overpackers
Dimensions: 58 x 38 x 25cm
Arlo Skye isn’t an especially well-known suitcase brand in the UK, but it’s a favourite of some of our US team – especially senior editor Megan Spurrell, who has taken it on both weekend trips and week-long adventures. “This bag has never let me down,” she says, crediting its surprisingly roomy inner and sturdy shell: “This suitcase looks sleek, but is totally durable. I’ve checked it on a few occasions, and it always survives being chucked onto the baggage carousel with little to no evidence of the journey.”
Pros: Lightweight, range of colours, front pocket, handles smoothly
Cons: Expensive, handle takes up quite a bit of internal space
Size: 55 x 39.5 x 23cm
This cabin case has been carefully designed to make light work of whizzing through security. The front pocket opens out completely flat, and three internal pockets are within for your liquids, passport, electricals and a 16” laptop sleeve. As befitting a brand focusing on outdoor pursuits, this is a tough case built to withstand bumps and knocks. A custom-built telescopic handle and ultra-quiet Japanese Hinomoto wheels add to the luxe factor – it’s a very quiet suitcase on the move, and we like the unusual green tone that makes it easy to spot on the carousel.
Editor review: “While The Ramverk Carry-on isn’t the most lightweight carry-on case I’ve travelled with, the consequential sturdiness quashes any hesitance – should it need to go in the hold, it would certainly put up a fight against rougher bag handlers. The telescopic trolley handle comes up to a perfect height, the 16-inch laptop pocket makes it ideal for business travel, and four wheels allow me to keep it alongside me the entire time. My favourite feature is the ability to open the compartment at the front without having both sides open on the floor.” Connor Sturges, digital assistant
The best underseat cabin bag
Pros: Custom sizes to suit specific airline allowances, laptop sleeve, bottle pouch, multiple colour options.
Cons: Colour options are only in regards to details, suede details aren't ideal for wet weather.
Sizes: Ryanair Size: 40x20 x25cm, Wizz Air Size: 40x 30x20cm, easyJet Size: 40x36x20cm
Weight: under 0.8kg
Cabin Max truly understands the plight of bargain-hunting travellers, having created a line where each backpack meets the exact maximum carry-on size measurements for the specific airline that you’re flying. In addition, their bags feature multiple pockets (including one for a laptop and bottle), adjustable ‘packaway’ straps and air mesh padding. There’s a 3-year warranty too.
The only downside is that if you opt for a larger bag – say the easyJet size – it probably won’t fit in the baggage sizer for either Ryanair or Wizz Air. However, you could always opt for a Ryanair-sized bag to make sure you’re sorted for all options in the future. Chelsea Dickenson , founder of Cheap Holiday Expert
The best carry-on backpack
Pros: Comfortable, multiple storage pockets, laptop sleeve, great as carry on luggage or a day bag, water-resistant fabric.
Size: 53x36x19cm
Weight: 1.1kg
Australian brand Bellroy is a favourite for organised travellers – once you try their popular tech kit you’ll never want to travel without it. Their transit backpack offers up the same clever organisation tricks – compression straps to keep items in place, an external pocket that can hold a water bottle and even a lined pocket to safely store sunglasses. Many of the features are well suited to business travellers, from the laptop sleeve to the thin top compartment ideal for storing a business shirt that’s folded flat.
Editor review: “I recently travelled with Bellroy’s 28L Transit Backpack for a four-day-stay in Venice. By using the roll method I was able to fit two pairs of trousers (including jeans), a pair of slip-on shoes, two tops, a shirt, a dress, and pyjamas in the main compartment, and then my delicates in the zip-up pouch. For easy access, I popped my carry-on washbag in the external pocket. Overall, it was really easy to pack everything I needed while still feeling streamlined and comfortable to carry,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.
Stubble & Co's clever bag that allows you to ditch your suitcase entirely – it's sized perfectly to fit in the airline overhead locker while maximising on internal space. A clamshell pocket makes packing and unpacking faff-free, with no need to dig about at the bottom of the bag. There are plenty of pockets for tech and essentials, and a 16” laptop compartment for those travelling on business. You can also read our full review of this bag.
Editor review: “The Adventure Bag from British B Corp-certified bag specialists Stubble & Co has none of the drawbacks of previous bags I’ve used. It’s big enough for a long weekend, but not too big for daily use, and packed with features: the secret pocket, the padded laptop compartment, the clamshell design, and a special pocket for my frequently dirty trainers (big tick). Using it on a recent trip to Comporta, as well as on my regular overnighters in London, it never felt over-engineered or fussy, and I loved the top compartments for books and gadgets,” Toby Skinner, features director.
Pros: Separate waterproof shoe pocket, trolley sleeve, rain cover for use during wet weather hikes
Cons: A little heavier than average
Size: 55x38x24 cm
Weight: 1.7kg
This bag looks and feels like it means business. With a 45L capacity, it’s one of the largest travel backpacks we’ve tried, while still fitting within airline carry-on bag requirements. It can be worn as a backpack or a duffle thanks to the removable strap. There’s also a trolley sleeve for times it’s accompanying you and an additional suitcase. We’ve found that you can happily fit a week’s worth of clothes in this bag, and there are compression straps that help keep everything in place. The brand also has some matching packing cubes, sized specifically for this bag, that makes it easier to keep things tidy inside. Finally, a chest strap helps support you if you’re taking this bag on a hike.
Editor review: “I took this bag for a weekend away recently and was impressed by how much I could fit inside – it was considerably more than I could squeeze into my regular suitcase carry-on. For one-bag travel, it’s a really good bet – it’s going to be my new go-to for festival season and on long weekends away, where I need to account for multiple outfit changes in a day. One caveat: I did get caught in some heavy rain at one point and sadly the water seeped inside the bag. It makes me hesitant to pack it during winter travel – keep it for your summer holidays or invest in a waterproof rain cover, just in case,” Charley Ward, commerce writer.
Pros: Very large while still within most carrier’s carry-on size limits
Cons: Not completely watertight in heavy downpours after a certain period of time
Size: 28x18x43cm
Weight: 1kg
The best carry on tote bag
Pros: Two handle options, multiple organisational pockets, detachable drink bottle holder, laptop sleeve, luggage handle sleeve.
Cons: Main compartment has no zip.
Size: 41X30X16.5cm
It’s easy to see why this travel tote bag is a best seller and often sold out. Firstly the size – the large tote has room for 22 litres, plenty of space for packing a whole weekend’s worth of items. When testing it, I managed to comfortably fit four different packing cubes of clothes inside, as well as a wash bag. Then there’s the organisation options – a dedicated laptop sleeve, a drink bottle holder, a pocket for a phone and wallet, as well as a zip-up pocket ideal for storing a passport. There are two external pockets, one that’s hidden and secured with a magnet, as well as a sleeve to slip over a luggage handle, so it can easily sit safely on top of a suitcase. The bag is made from a light machine-washable cotton canvas and comes in natural, navy and black, as well as a small size option.
Editor's review: “I've travelled with this tote a couple of times, using it as my under-seat bag on easyJet flights. As a mum of a two-year-old it's perfect for storing all of the things you need easy access to – there's plenty of room and dedicated pockets for toys, snacks, a tablet, a water bottle. It's also large enough that it can fit a travel potty. When I'm travelling by myself, I can fit multiple outfits and a pair of shoes in very easily by using packing cubes. I have the natural colour and really love how stylish it looks too,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.
There are several Beis totes we love in its roster – the Large Work Tote is another great carry-on option – but its East To West bag is our top pick. It’s made from recycled plastic, has a removable cross-body strap, and is one of the brand’s larger offerings. The top zips up so nothing will spill out, which is handy regardless of whether you’re stowing it under your seat or in the overhead compartment. It comes in four colours to match your Beis suitcase, and a trolley sleeve to attach it to your case in the airport.
Pros: Laptop sleeve, mobile phone pocket, key leash, water bottle holder
Cons: Doesn’t come in as many colours as some of the other Beis totes
The best carry-on luggage for kids
Pros: Range of designs, doubles as a ride, easy to clean.
Cons: Slightly awkward to carry or pull when in a rush.
Size: 46X20X31cm
For tiny flyers, Trunki’s ride-on-luggage is one of the most popular children’s suitcases on the market. Lightweight yet built to last, the case has a storage capacity of 18 litres, allowing plenty of space for toys and books. The real highlight is the saddle design, along with horn grips for stability and a tow strap, so children can ride the case and be pulled along – a great way to kill time in the airport.
Editor's review: “We travelled with this suitcase as my two-year-old son's carry-on bag when we flew to the Maldives . He absolutely loved being pulled around the airport while riding it, which helped speed up the journey from check-in to the gate. The shape of the bag means it won't fit all large hard cover books, so stick to small or soft cover books, and I recommend storing any toys in packing cubes inside, otherwise they can fall out everywhere when the case is opened,” Lauren Burvill, commerce editor.
What size should my carry-on suitcase be?
Tediously, every airline has different size restrictions for carry-on luggage. The good news is that they’re all similar, so unless you have an especially large carry-on, your suitcase should fit in the majority of airlines’ overhead lockers. On average, look for a cabin case around 55 x 35 x 25 cm for maximum peace of mind. We’ve outlined the size restrictions for key British airlines below.
Every airline also allows passengers to bring a smaller underseat bag . These are great for keeping documents to hand, along with your water bottle and any entertainment you want to use in-flight. Utilising this bag properly can also help to keep the weight down in your carry-on, helping you avoid any additional airport fees.
With really clever packing, this underseat bag can even replace your carry-on case on shorter trips. Our commerce editor Lauren Burvill can attest to using just Antler’s Chelsea holdall on weekends away. You can also see our full guide to the best underseat flight bags .

What is the weight limit for carry-on luggage?
Again, it varies between airlines, but most carry-on weight limits are within seven to 15kg, with the majority sitting around 8kg. EasyJet has the heaviest carry-on luggage limit, at a hefty 15kg. If you tend to overpack, investing in a luggage scale can help you avoid any excess fees at check-in. Skyscanner has put together a useful matrix of weight limits for each airline here but, if you’re unsure, it’s best to check the airline’s website directly before flying.
How much should I spend on carry-on luggage?
Ultimately, this is going to come down to your own personal budget and tastes. But the majority of our best carry-on suitcases tend to sit around the £200 to £250 mark. Designer luggage, such as from the likes of Rimowa and Louis Vuitton, will cost much more. But while you can find cheaper suitcases on Amazon , our best luggage picks boast extras such as lifetime guarantees, long warranties and free repairs – as well as superior build quality and good looks. It means spending a little more at the outset is often worth it in the long run, especially for regular travellers.

Holiday luggage: the best carry-on bags to take on board
Tales of turmoil at airports make hand baggage the route to choose – but be aware of cabin allowances
F irst it was the extra charges applied by some airlines that made travelling light appear attractive. Now, reports of horrifically long bag drop queues, lost luggage and baggage mountains have provided extra reasons to squeeze your holiday gear into a carry-on bag.
Your chance of getting to your destination with everything you need will be greatly enhanced by keeping your hands on it at all times and, depending on the airline, it will possibly save you considerable sums.
However, there are restrictions on what and how much you are allowed to bring on board the plane – and if you get it wrong, you could have a nasty shock at the airport if you find you have to check it in after all.
Buying a suitcase specifically designed as carry-on luggage, and which can be put into the overhead lockers, will help take the stress out of packing and avoid any unexpected surcharges at the airport.
The best cabin bags this summer
The consumer body Which? recently published a list of the top luggage retailers selling bags specifically designed to fit in the overhead locker on a plane.
Its survey of shoppers ranked Eastpak bags as the best, followed by John Lewis, Antler, IT Luggage, Samsonite, Cabin Max and Marks & Spencer.
Customers were asked to rate their purchases on their durability, packing space and value for money.
Guy Hobbs, the acting editor of Which? Travel, says: “There’s no need to pay over the odds for your cabin luggage this summer. Our research based on the experiences of thousands of holidaymakers found there are bargain bags that closely match their pricier rivals for quality.”
We’ve rounded up some of the best-value options from the highest-rated firms, and worked out which airlines will accept them as carry-on luggage.
The John Lewis Girona four-wheel cabin case has 55 x 35 x 20cm dimensions, making it suitable for Jet2, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic flights.
You would also be able to take it on board if you paid extra with Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet .
This week it was priced at £45 and, when we looked, was sold out online but in stock in some stores.
Eastpak’s Morepack bag measures 50 x 32 x 17cm, weighs 720g and can carry 35 litres.
Its £90 price tag makes it one of the more expensive options but it can be taken on most flights.
Passengers who have paid for Ryanair or Wizz Air priority boarding or easyJet carry-on luggage will be able to use this bag on board the plane.
It also fits within BA, Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic’s free carry-on luggage requirements.
The £50 Cabin Max Anode 30 litre underseat cabin case is designed to avoid having to pay extra for baggage on easyJet flights.
It is a compact size at 45 x 36 x 20cm – matching the exact maximum dimensions allowed on board easyJet flights for free.
It also fits the requirements set by BA, Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic to take on board for free.
It is slightly too big to take on a Ryanair or Wizz Air flight free of charge, but would be acceptable if you paid for priority.
The £40 Cabin Max Lyon cabin trolley backpack comes in at 55 x 40 x 20cm, including wheels, and weighs 1.7kg.
It matches Ryanair’s maximum carry-on allowance for priority customers, and would also be allowed if you paid extra with easyJet and Wizz Air.
There would be no charge for taking it on a BA, Jet2 or Virgin Atlantic flight.
Marks & Spencer’s £45 Porto cabin suitcase is 54 x 20 x 37cm, and has a 41-litre capacity.
Again, priority customers of the three budget airlines would be able to use this bag on board, and it meets BA, Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic requirements.
IT Luggage is an online-only retailer selling a wide range of bags suitable for cabin luggage. The World’s Lightest unicorn and stars print case is the cheapest on its website at £40. Its dimensions are 55 x 40 x 20cm, it weighs 1.8kg and carries 37 litres.
Its dimensions exactly match the allowance for Ryanair priority customers, meaning it is also suitable for all of the other airlines featured.
The Resonating cabin bag is more expensive at £70 but it also gives you more packing space, with 48 litres.
With dimensions of 54 x 36 x 25cm, it would fit on all the same flights as the cheaper model, and weighs 3kg.
Antler’s Clifton vanity case is the smallest pick of the bunch at 16 x 34 x 27cm, so would fit on Ryanair and easyJet flights for free.
The bag is also fairly expensive at £79, although the brand was highly rated by Which? customers.
It is quite tiny, with just enough space for a change of clothes and some toiletries, meaning it is probably only suitable for short trips.
Alternatively, you could take it as your smaller piece of hand luggage on BA, Jet2 and Virgin Atlantic flights, or if you pay to upgrade on easyJet, Ryanair or Wizz Air.
Cabin baggage allowances
Airlines have different definitions of what counts as carry-on luggage. Ryanair customers can take on one small personal bag with the dimensions 40 x 20 x 25cm free of charge.
If you want to take a bigger bag on board, you’ll have to pay between £8 and £32 extra for priority, which allows you to travel with a 10kg wheelie suitcase up to 55 x 40 x 20cm.
Meanwhile, easyJet passengers can take a bag up to a maximum size of 45 x 36 x 20cm, including any handles or wheels, free of charge. It must fit under the seat in front of them – and can weigh up to 15kg.
Customers who want to bring a large cabin bag – up to 56 x 45 x 25cm – have to pay extra for an upfront or extra-legroom seat, or book the add-on when they buy their ticket, with prices starting at £5.99.
British Airways allows travellers to bring a handbag or laptop bag with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 15cm for free.
Passengers are also allowed to bring a cabin bag up to 56 x 45 x 25cm, with a maximum weight of 23kg, for no extra charge.
Customers booking with Virgin Atlantic can take a 23 x 36 x 56cm cabin bag, weighing a maximum of 10kg, for free.
Jet2 passengers can take one piece of hand luggage on board free of charge, as long as it weighs no more than 10kg and is no larger than 56 x 45 x 25cm, including any wheels and handles.
They can also bring a small personal item on board – such as a handbag, laptop bag or airport purchase – as long as it will fit under the seat in front.
Wizz Air allows passengers to bring a 40 x 30 x 20cm bag on board for free but customers who upgrade to priority – for an extra charge starting at about £4 – can take a 55 x 40 x 23cm case. Wheels aren’t included in the dimensions but they must not add more than 5cm on to the size of the bag.

18 best weekender bags for women that are both chic and practical
Heading off for the weekend? Our pick of the best weekender bags are the ultimate – and most stylish – travel companion
The problem that often comes when packing for a weekend trip is that you need something bigger than a rucksack or tote bag , but a suitcase is too large for a few nights' stay. American Tourister suitcase
- 13:02, 19 Dec 2023
- Updated 13:19, 19 Dec 2023
Finding the perfect suitcase can be a challenge, but a few years ago I happened upon a humble hard side that I now can't help but recommend to anyone who asks.
Back in 2019, I was looking for a case that would have to endure several flight transfers, numerous hotel bellboys and the constant bumps and knocks of repeated car hire. Without wanting to spend a fortune, I snapped up the medium-sized American Tourister suitcase from John Lewis , and it turned out to be the best investment in luggage I've ever made.
My particular model may have been discontinued now but the the Starvibe , Aerostep and Summer Hit ranges offer even more strength, durability and designer good looks on a budget. With the John Lewis Boxing Day sale almost upon us, savvy travellers could pick up their own American Tourister for less.
READ MORE: The French designer travel bags that cost less than High Street stores
From Chicago to Nashville and on to Tupelo, Memphis, Somerville, Jackson and finally New Orleans, that £75 suitcase more than held its own. A true American Tourister by name, it easily stood up to the rigours of independent travel across three states and more than 900 miles, and further adventures in Spain and France, a school exchange trip, the occasional staycation and two house moves.
Made with a resistant polypropylene outer shell that can handle the rigours of regular adventures, the spacious interior has elasticated straps and a zippered compartment. A recessed TSA lock lets customs officers open the bag without having to break into it, and the smooth rolling wheels keep the case quietly by my side.
Delighted with the success of my £75 purchase, I cannot help but extol the virtues of this affordable luggage brand that offers a practical, cost-effective alternative to more expensive ranges from Antler , Samsonite, or Delsey .
Buy American Tourister in the John Lewis Boxing Day Sale

It’s official – we’re stuffing more into our suitcases than ever before, and the right packing cube can make this process significantly easier, which is why we’ve tracked down the ones worthy of a spot in your luggage .
Let’s face it – nobody likes packing, and, in an age when airlines are imposing increasingly strict restrictions relating to baggage, we’re all for anything that can make the process a little less daunting. This is where the best packing cubes come in.
These zippered cubes are used to segregate different items, putting you on the fast track to packing perfection. Their growing popularity has pushed manufacturers to produce versions designed with a range of requirements in mind.
Looking for a cube in which to store your favourite shirt? Consider one with an internal pocket in which you can place the jewellery you’ll wear with it. Travelling through several countries (and climates) that require everything from hiking gear to smarter outfits? Opt for cubes that have generous areas of transparent mesh, which makes accessing different items quick and easy.
If you’re a packing cube obsessive like us, you can’t go wrong with colour-coordinated sets of multiple cubes. Another factor is sustainability, as a growing number of brands are using recycled materials or ones that have Bluesign certification – a global seal of approval for environment, health and production safety.

How we tested the best packing cubes.
As keen travellers, we put a variety of travel cubes through their paces. We considered all aspects, whether it was the construction (we’re particularly keen on double and compression-style zips), rigidity (useful when it comes to more delicate items), and internal features, such as inner pockets. Only the best of the best made the cut, thanks to a review process that focused firmly on travellers’ wants and needs.
The best packing cubes for 2024 are:

Thule compression cube set
- Best : Packing cubes overall
- Size : Small 25cm x 18cm x 3cm; medium 34cm x 23cm x 3cm (compressed)
- Classy design
- Incredibly practical
We’re not going to lie – we’re huge fans of Thule, a brand famous for roof boxes but which also does so much more. This packing cube double act didn’t disappoint – the material feels incredibly tough, and we loved the monochrome look, featuring a cream-coloured nylon with a black zip. The smaller cube was perfect for items such as socks, while the larger one is designed for items such as T-shirts, but both have a Tardis-like quantity, thanks to compression zips.
The best bit? The two zips are clearly distinguishable – the main zips are black, while the compression ones are white, which means no more fiddling around with the wrong ones. We were amazed by how much we could cram into both cubes, while added extras worth flagging include the abundance of hanging hooks and the Bluesign accreditation, which is awarded to items that embrace sustainable production techniques.
Go Travel packing cubes twin set
- Best : Budget packing cube
- Size : 40cm x 28cm x 5cm
- Large handle comes in useful
- Not the toughest material
This cheap and cheerful packing cube does exactly what it says on the tin. The use of a semi-transparent mesh on one side meant it was easy to check the contents, and the large handle at the top made it easy to wrangle the cube out of our (overpacked) suitcase. It also meant we could sling it over hooks in our hotel room. The zip is one of the longest we’ve come across – it covers three sides (and a little bit more) of the cube, making it ridiculously easy to extract the contents. The sky-blue nylon added a welcome burst of colour to our largely monochrome luggage accessories, too.
Patagonia black hole cube, medium
- Best : Packing cube for toughness
- Size : 27.9cm x 10.9cm x 17.8cm
- Great internal design
While mesh packing cubes make it easy for you to see their contents, they could pose leak-related problems when housing toiletries.
That’s where Patagonia’s black hole cube comes in. Available in three sizes (we opted for the 6l version), it’s extremely tough, made with 100 per cent recycled ripstop polyester fabric, while a recycled TPU-film laminate means it’s a great option for leak-prone items.
The exterior zip wraps around three sides of the cube, which has one of the largest carry handles we’ve seen. The interior is also one of our favourites of any travel cube – it’s clamshell-style, with two large compartments, each covered with a zippered mesh panel.
Lakeland packing cubes trio
- Best : Packing cubes for value
- Size : Large 41cm x 32cm x 13cm; medium 32cm x 21cm x 13cm; small 20cm x 16cm x 13cm
There aren’t any mesh panels on these packing cubes, but their boxy design, rugged construction and stylish appearance (the material has the look of denim) more than make up for the lack of transparency. After all, as huge fans of these cubes, we’re firm believers in having a range of styles in our arsenal.
The set contains three packing cubes – small, medium and large. The material, a waterproofed polyester, is incredibly thick, and the zips cover three sides of each cube, making access a breeze. Another aspect we loved is how the two smaller cubes are designed to fit inside the larger one – although they also perform just as well when used independently.
Gomatic compression packing cube, medium
- Best : Compression-style cube
- Size : 29cm x 19cm x 12cm
- Thoughtful design
Multiple (generously sized) hanging hooks and zips with extra-long grips meant it was love at first sight when it came to this packing cube, which has a zip covering three sides – perfect for easy access. It’s a compression-style cube, so there was plenty of space, although, it would have been great to see the zips in different colours, to make it easier to distinguish between the two sets.
Everything about this cube felt reassuringly tough, though – from the extra-thick material to the rubber seals over the zip pulls, which minimise the risk of fraying. A large area of mesh panelling on one side of the cube made it easy to see the contents, too.
Peak Design shoe pouch
- Best : Packing cube for shoes
- Size : Maximum 32cm x 17cm x 17cm
- Rugged material
- Material isn’t transparent
The world’s your oyster when it comes to Peak Design’s packing cubes – choose from a small or medium cube, a shoe pouch or a set of three, six or eight cubes. We opted for the shoe pouch, and found the size to be spot-on – it was large enough to take a pair of size nine running shoes, and had enough give to allow us to squeeze in a couple of pairs of socks, too.
The material felt ultra-tough, although, we’d love to see areas of transparent material – jet-setters who travel with multiple pairs of shoes would no doubt agree. We’re adding extra points for the multiple hanging hooks (four in total) and the leather tag bearing the brand’s name, which offered an upgrade in the style stakes.
Snugpak pakbox packing cube
- Best : Tardis-like packing cube
- Size : 27cm x 28cm x 8cm
- There’s a carry handle
Why don’t more packing cubes look (and feel) like this one? The Tardis-like pakbox (we tried the 4l version) has the features we value most – generous areas of transparent mesh make it easy to get to specific garments, while reinforced areas not only ramp up the rigidity (we used it to store a stack of delicate dresses) but offer a certain toughness.
It’s also got the holy grail – a zip that wraps around three sides of the cube. We love the addition of a carry handle, too.
Vango mesh bag set
- Best : Mesh bags
- Size : 43l, 10l and 3l
- Squishy and malleable
Now for something completely different – albeit a concept we’re pretty impressed by. These aren’t so much cubes as mesh bags, but they offer a brilliant option for anyone keen to make the most of suitcase space. The bags’ squishiness means they can be squeezed into corners and fitted around other items, and a full mesh exterior means we were still able to quickly see (and access) the contents.
They’re also incredibly versatile – we’ve lost count of the times we’ve misplaced items of clothing after using communal washing machines in homestays and hostels. Sound familiar? Avoid the trauma of laundry loss by simply placing items in one of these quick-drying bags before putting the entire shebang in the washing machine.
Osprey ultra light packing cube, large
- Best : Packing cube for bright colours
- Size : 32cm x 20cm x 7cm
- Bright colourway
- Incorporates recycled fabrics
- Helpful handles
Colours don’t add anything to quality, but there’s something wonderful about the brightness of this packing cube, which made the whole packing process somehow more enjoyable. Colour aside, we also loved this one for its toughness, its sustainability (courtesy of Bluesign-approved fabrics) and the extra-large fabric handle.
La Pochette shoe carry
- Best : Packing cube for easy access
- Size : 25cm x 29cm x 12cm
- More malleable than other options
- There’s an interior pocket
Don’t get too bogged down by the “shoe carry” moniker – although we ended up using it to store our trainers and prevent dirt rubbing onto clothing in our suitcase, we also used it for other items.
This cube has less rigidity than some other options in this round-up, but we found this to be a huge bonus – its squishiness came in incredibly useful when squashing in extra items of clothing (we’re notorious over-packers).
We were also smitten with the interior pocket, which we found useful for storing everything from items of jewellery to paperwork.
Peak Design packing cube medium
- Best : Packing cube for organised travellers
- Size : 32cm x 32cm x 8cm
- Internal dividers
- There’s a compression zip
- Could have done with more mesh
Yes, we’d love to see more areas of mesh on this packing cube, but other features more than made up for it (call us fickle, but there’s something wonderfully stylish about its sleek, textured grey exterior).
Internal dividers proved invaluable during a longer-than-average holiday, which left us needing to separate our dirty laundry. Plus, the compression-style zip was a lifesaver when it came to cramming unexpected extras (read: holiday shopping) into our suitcase.
Exped clear cube, extra large
- Best : Packing cube for simplicity
- Size : 36cm x 24cm x 10cm
- Almost entirely transparent
- Easy to clean
- Not as robust as other options
If seeing the contents of your cube is a priority, you’ll love this offering from Exped – the only opaque bit is the zipper. It doesn’t feel as tough as cubes with larger areas of mesh or opaque material, but there are definite bonuses to using transparent plastic rather than mesh.
For starters, it meant this cube was the lightest we’ve come across, and it was also incredibly low maintenance – we could simply wipe-clean the plastic, while, with other cubes, an accidental spill (in our case, a leaking bottle of sun lotion) would have required a spin in the washing machine. Meanwhile, the bright colours will be appreciated by those with an obsession with organisation.
Briggs & Riley large travel packing cubes
- Best : Packing cube for style
- Size : Medium 21.5cm x 33cm x 7.6cm; medium double-sided 21.5cm x 33cm x 10cm; large 33cm x 43cm x 7.6 cm
- Double zips
- Super accessible
You’ll be hard-pushed to find more stylish luggage than the items produced by Briggs & Riley, and this packing cube set didn’t disappoint. But don’t assume it’s a case of style over substance – these cubes are great examples of ones packed with features that are often skipped.
The exterior’s combo of mesh sides and (surprisingly rigid) opaque areas strike the perfect balance between practicality and accessibility. We also appreciated the presence of the double zips and the fact the cubes could be unzipped on three sides, which cranked up the accessibility even more.
Packing cubes FAQs
How do packing cubes work.
Many packing cubes are simply fabric holdalls with a zip to help compartmentalise your things, while compression packing cubes work by compressing the air around your clothes to help save even more space. Exactly how they do this will depend on the cube.
For some packing cubes, you may need to remove the air manually with a vacuum cleaner. Then there are cubes that don’t require a vacuum cleaner and can instead be compressed with a very strong zip, or by rolling them out, which in turn expells the air inside.
Packing tips
It may seem like overkill, but knowing exactly what you’re taking before you start can help you stay organised. Make a list of everything you really need, too, so you’re less likely to forget something important.
To save on space, only bring full outfits for each day or activity, so you won’t bring anything you won’t actually wear. You may also find that rolling your clothes up instead of folding them saves even more space. That said, try to avoid rolling up any stiff or delicate pieces of clothing – anything made of cotton or linen would be a prime example of clothes that should be folded instead.
You may want to avoid bringing anything that will get wrinkled easily unless you’re bringing a portable iron or garment steamer. Speaking of which, your suitcase should be full enough that the contents can’t fall around and crease inside. Make sure to fill every empty space if you can.
How to organise your suitcase
Start by deciding how you would like to categorise each packing cube – will you have a different cube for tops and trousers, say, or for each day or member of the family? You may find smaller cubes more useful for weekend trips, while fewer, larger packing cubes may be better suited to longer excursions.
The heaviest and widest packing cubes ought to be at the bottom of the suitcase, leaving room for smaller cubes to be arranged around and on top. This will make the suitcase more stable and you won’t need to remove the biggest cube to reach items at the bottom.
Finally, make sure you set aside valuable and fragile items, which will be best kept in their own packing cube. Pop this at the top of your suitcase too, to prevent it from being damaged.
The verdict: Packing cubes
Thule’s compression cube set is stylish, practical and (almost) fits everything but the kitchen sink – we loved the stylish look, too. Meanwhile, Lowe Alpine’s packing cube is a masterclass in sleek simplicity – it’s a product with the rugged practicality for which the brand’s backpacks are famous. Then there’s Patagonia’s black hole cube , which is both rugged and stylish. Put it this way, if there was ever a packing cube that could double as a tote bag, it’s this one.

The best wash bags for men who groom on the go
By Heidi Quill , Jessie Atkinson and Faye Fearon
All the grooming gear but no idea where to keep it all? From The North Face to Louis Vuitton, GQ’s edit of the best wash bags for men will carry your toiletries in style
Take your grooming seriously? Then a plastic security bag just won’t cut it. To schlep your best toiletries, moisturiser , aftershave and the like in style you’ll need wash bags of repute. Or at least one that’s on a par with the effort you put into scouting an exfoliator worth its salt.
That’s why we’ve done our research to find the best wash bags for men to ensure you’re carrying your skin and haircare solutions in a gentlemanly fashion. From Reiss to Prada, these picks will marry with a suitcase , gym kit , duffle or backpack , or simply as a stylish tool to store any bathroom counter overspill. And once you have your wash bag sorted, be sure to keep it well stocked with our weekly pick of new grooming items .
What are GQ 's best wash bags for men?
You'll find all the wash bags worth your consideration in the gallery below, but first, here's what our editors are travelling with this season:
- Best classic wash bag: Bennett Winch, £425, bennettwinch.com
- Best value wash bag: Rains, £39, rains.com
- Best designer wash bag: Bottega Veneta, £1,350, mytheresa.com
- Best colourful wash bag: The North Face, £30, thenorthface.co.uk
What is the best fabric for a wash bag?
We tend to fill our wash bags with a variety of oils, creams and ointments that, when the victim of a pressurised air cabin or particularly bumpy car ride, can result in quite the sticky mess within your wash bag. It's for that reason that you'll most commonly find wash bags in a range of leathers or synthetic nylon, both being especially durable, tear-resistant and able to be simply wiped clean.
How do you clean a wash bag?
Whilst some wash bags will be able to go in the washing machine (the lapel should let you know), a spot of soap and hot water will never go amiss, and hand washing is generally a pretty safe bet. When it comes to leather wash bags, we recommend cleaning the inside with a damp cloth while gently wiping the outside panels with either a mild soap or an upholstery-specific wipe.

- Fabrication: Leather
- Colours: Black
Tom Ford knows how to serve timeless designs infused with just the right dose of glamour, and this extends to his selection of grooming accessories. Assembled from glossy, croc-effect leather, this stark black design is shaped with a solid rectangular structure and features practical zipped compartments across the front and inner. Decadently contrasted with gold-toned hardware, it's a must for serious fashion lovers.
- Fabrication: Polyester
- Colours: Yellow, black, beige, khaki (+4 more)
Masters of the raincoat and outerwear of all types, Rains has turned its practised eye to the wash bag. Utilising its same waterproof design and coated details, Rains' lime green option goes hard on durability, but style certainly isn't far behind.
- Fabrication: Polyamide
Looking to introduce a pop of colour to your bathroom shelf? Paul Smith is at hand to provide it. Centred by the designer's multicoloured striped webbing motif, this wash bag is as playful as it is practical: designed from a durable textured mesh, fitted with a small strap and complete with a pocket inside. If you ask us, it's an easy win – especially when partnered with the designer's range of similarly-striped accessory kits.
Marks & Spencer
- Fabrication: Recycled polyester
Hats off to Marks & Spencer for offering a wash bag which is environmentally-conscious and won’t break the bank. With sustainability in mind, this simple black style is made from a recycled Pro-Tect polyester fabric to promise serious durability and resistance against scuffs. Fitted with a water-resistant lining and two zipped compartments, rest assured that it will last for the long run.
Alpine Trek
- Fabrication: Polyester blend
- Colours: Black, navy, green (+1 more)
The small red fox that took over outdoor accessories has now moved into travel storage. Fjällräven's Kånken wash bag is by no means an exception to the label's practical approach to stylish storage, made from a durable, quick-drying fabric derived from recycled polyester and organic cotton. Put simply, it's ready for anything.
The North Face
- Fabrication: Recycled polyester blend
- Colours: Green, black, yellow
It’s an undeniable truth that smaller versions of large things are simply, and irrefutably, adorable. This wash bag from The North Face is a scaled-down iteration of the Base Camp Duffel bag, storing 5.7 litres in a durable, water-repellent construction. Finished in a laurel wreath green, this wash bag makes the ideal travel partner.
- Fabrication: Canvas
- Colours: Brown
Few brand motifs are as iconic as Gucci's recurring GG logo, making it an eternally stylish addition to your bathroom shelf. Dating back to the 1930s, the heritage rhombi print clads this supreme canvas wash bag – the middle of which is streamlined with the Italian house's equally iconic Web stripe and gold-toned hardware. Best of all, its brown leather trim is made through a chrome-free tanning process to reduce its environmental footprint. Just excellent.

Horizn Studios
- Fabrication: PVC blend
Since most wash bags are covered in canvas, it's easy to throw too many belongings inside and run the risk of overflowing them with clutter. Fortunately, with this design by Horizn Studios, you won't make that mistake, as its silhouette is entirely (and stylishly) transparent. Swapping plastics for animal-friendly materials in its creation, it's finished with a branded logo patch at the front and also complies with airport size regulations – meaning you can use it at home or abroad.
The primary purpose of a wash bag may be practicality, but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice good style in the process. Immediately ticking the boxes for both, this leather-crafted design by Loewe is the ultimate example of quiet luxury – inspired by the art form of origami through its panelling across the front. This format can also be packed down for space-saving, but if you prefer to keep it standing straight its full lining ensures the greatest shape.
Affordable accessories with strong cultural credit? Sign us up. These are served by none other than Fred Perry, whose simple but effective style status is evidenced by this staple wash bag. Coated in a shiny black shade, its rounded frame is fitted with a top handle for convenience on the go, and the bottom corner is stamped with the brand's acclaimed Laurel Wreath logo. Fuss-free and budget-friendly, what's not to love?
Aspinal of London
- Colours: Tobacco, Navy, Black
It’s not entirely clear why Aspinal of London has called its leather wash bag the “Reporter”. Perhaps it’s because you’ll want to report your new purchase to absolutely everyone on the same flight as you. Pebbled in tobacco (the most gentlemanly of browns), it comes with rubber base points and a loop, so as to keep your new toy out of the suspicious-looking water in the aeroplane bathroom.
If your interest in grooming has led to what some would call an unnerving (but you would call necessary) amount of moisturisers and beard oils , you’ll need something a little more capacious. Allow Lululemon to step in: the athleisure brand hears your plight and provides a 5-litre capacity bag with endless storage options as a solution.
- Fabrication: Recycled woven fabric
- Colours: Bronze, navy, grey (+1 more)
Encouraging exploration with style, Bellroy supports movement in all forms. Given a burnt orange hue, this Bellroy toiletry kit is as big on storage and organisation as it is on aesthetics, keeping your essentials in their place no matter your final destination.
Crafted from a water-resistant coated canvas and fully lined in black, Métier’s staple wash bag is one for those who like to keep things elegant in the bathroom. Featuring the London-based brand’s art-deco-like monogram across the silhouette, it fastens with a two-way leather zip pull and features a curved leather handle at the side.
- Fabrication: Polyurethane
Assembled from sturdy faux leather and structured to a rectangular silhouette, this black washbag by Ted Baker demonstrated the brand’s flair for quality at an affordable price. Featuring checked panels down the centre of the body, it’s fitted with an internal net pocket and handle on top. Currently on sale via Selfridges, be sure to add it to your basket before it’s too late.
If you’re looking to invest in a truly luxury washbag, Berluti is the brand to turn to. Having excelled in quality design since 1895, this Formula 1003 washbag is a prime example of its craftsmanship: assembled from the house’s unique Venezia leather and embossed with a signature calligraphic “ scritto” motif. A real beauty.
- Fabrication: Recycled polyamide
- Colours: Black, stone
If you’re less inclined to drop half of your pay cheque on something very few people are going to see, we wouldn’t blame you one bit. Head to Arket, we say. There, you’ll find a sub-£20 model that’s both generously sized and appealing to behold.
Bottega Veneta
Sometimes just one kind of construction says it all. Keeping things simple (and yet, oh-so-stylish) through the brand's signature Intrecciato-leather weaving style, Bottega Veneta’s classic wash bag is detailed with a side strap and zipped pocket inside. Guaranteed to keep you in good standing amongst the fashion crowd, it's an instant ‘yes’ from us.
Brunello Cucinelli
- Colours: Tan, black
With a price tag that’s not for the faint of heart, this Brunello Cucinelli wash bag is true to the ethos of the label that made it: if your new purchase isn’t an heirloom, why buy it? The very best makeup bags to store your growing stash and keep everything organised
By Louise Whitbread , Elle Turner and Georgia Trodd
Organisation makes life so much easier – especially when it comes to your makeup . One of the best makeup bags could be the difference between your box-fresh eyeliner pencil staying neat and sharp, or it rolling around in fluff at the bottom of your drawer. It could also be the difference between quickly tracking down your concealer pre- Christmas party , or you digging around for it under your bed .
While clear Muji drawers and Ikea trolleys are all well and good for makeup storage , the benefit of having your most-used beauty items in one portable makeup bag means you can pick it up and take it away with you at any time. Handy for when your getting ready with friends, so you can all de-camp to the lounge.
By Louise Whitbread , Elle Turner and Lottie Winter
Whether you're looking for a chic makeup case to store your makeup brushes , something with plenty of compartments so you can categorise, a clear makeup bag for travelling with, or a flat lay makeup bag you so can spread everything out in front of you, we've found every style and size to help you track down the best cosmetic bag for you.
If you're a professional makeup artist looking for a new travel-friendly kit, we love the Anya Hindmarch vanity kit leather-trimmed cosmetics case that has loads of compartments and sections to help you stay organised when working on clients. But if you're after something lightweight and compact to bring with you on your next staycation , the Stackers Hanging Wash Bag doubles up as a makeup bag and is an all-round no-brainer.
Elsewhere, The Flat Lay Co.'s drawstring makeup bags are selling like hot cakes on ASOS . They make life so much easier, since you can roll them out and have all your products ready in front of you - without leaving a dreaded foundation stain on the carpet. They store a tonne of makeup, have handy brush holders and a zipped compartment. Plus, they make for the perfect aesthetic to feature in your next Instagram post. There's a blush pink makeup bag , a pink velvet bag , a floral print version and a leopard print design . Plus so. Many. More.
