John Oates | Lobero Theatre | 4/13/23

Article contributed by l. paul mann | published on wednesday, april 19, 2023.

john oates tour 2023 setlist

The historic Lobero Theatre continued its 150th-anniversary celebration on April 13th with an exceptional intimate performance by the masterful singer-songwriter John Oates . The evening began with an opening set by veteran sessions singer/songwriter/guitarist/composer and producer Steve Postell . The guitarist played the Lobero recently as part of the Immediate Family band, a group of talented sessions musicians and songwriters. Postell performed with his longtime keyboard collaborator and his daughter, singing backing vocals. The trio played songs from Postell’s newest record, including contributions from David Crosby, Jennifer Warnes, Robben Ford, Eric Johnson, Dave Koz, Paul Barrere, and, fittingly, John Oates as well.

Steve Postell | Lobero Theatre

After a short intermission, John Oates took the stage with an acoustic guitar joined by a percussionist. Oates is a musical marvel, a triple threat of immense talent, including singing, songwriting, and exquisite guitar mastery. Best known as the hit-making duo Hall and Oates, the musician met his musical partner Daryl Hall in 1967. The duo released their debut album in 1972, and by 1984 Hall And Oates had earned 19 gold and platinum awards, surpassing the Everly Brothers as the most successful duo in rock history. Oates released his first solo album, Phunk Shui , in 2002. Mississippi Mile , his latest solo album, was released in April of this year.

John Oates | Lobero Theatre

Oates endeared himself to the intimate gathering early on with a mix of powerful storytelling and good humor. In the first half of the evening, he featured songs from his solo albums mixed with songs from Hall and Oates's final album and a few stunning covers. Each piece was referenced with an explanation of how it evolved. At the same time, Oates toyed with a member of the audience, anticipating hearing some of the Hall and Oates classics. “We will get there eventually, maybe," he quipped repeatedly. The mercurial musician has been an academic observer of American pop music history. He has been fascinated with the roots of music and the songs that inspired him to become a musician when growing up in Philadelphia.

John Oates | Lobero Theatre

The set included covers of some classic African American blues songs that Oates has brought new life into with an incredible three-octave singing voice and some of the most amazing guitar-picking skills of any guitarist in pop music. The set ended with some of Hall and Oates's biggest pop hits, but there was a twist even then. Ending with perhaps the duo's biggest hit, “Maneater,” Oates first told the story of observing a young New York model that inspired the song. Then he explained how he first envisioned the song as a reggae-influenced tune and recently recorded it in Jamaica the way he originally envisioned it. Finally, he ended with the upbeat Reggae version, much to the audience's delight. After a standing ovation, Oates returned for a final encore ending a memorable night of musical history.

JOHN OATES IN CONCERT: One half of legendary rock and soul duo Hall & Oates, John Oates has graced airwaves and stages around the world with his inspired singing and guitar playing. As a solo artist Oates turns in captivating performances that focus on his gifts for songwriting and his effortless showmanship to form a genuine connection with his audience. This troubadour knows how to give fans what they want, tearing through powerful solo material as well as perennial Hall & Oates favorites like “Maneater”, “Kiss on My List”, and “You Make My Dreams”. With his 2013 album Good Road to Follow still fresh in ticket buyers’ minds, Oates will hit the road in 2015 for a string of solo dates as well a highly anticipated tour with his musical soulmate Daryl Hall. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: Born in New York City in 1948, John Oates was a professional backing player in folk and soul bands before he even graduated high school. In addition to his work as a backing musician, he cut his first solo single “I Need Your Love” in 1966 before enrolling at Temple University in Philadelphia. While in school he met senior classmate and fellow professional musician Daryl Hall. The two hit it off and began writing and performing together, leading to a string of records in the early ‘70s. Hall & Oates’ first hit came in 1976 with “Sara Smile” and was followed by six No. 1 hits including “Rich Girl”, “Private Eyes”, and “I Can’t Go for That (No Can Do)”. Despite the duo’s massive global success and Oates’ own skills as a producer, he didn’t release his solo debut until 2002’s well-received Phunk Shui. Since then he has released four studio and three live albums while continuing to record and tour as a member of Hall & Oates.

Oates @ Buckhead Theatre

My wife has been a Hall & Oates fan since she was in high school but is more of an Oates fan. The show was excellent as he played more of his music than H&O tunes for about 2 hours. Not to say the H&O tunes weren’t great to hear but especially with some new styles to the songs! Great dialogue with the audience and was willing to joke a little about the current Daryl Hall issue without being hateful. But all in all very nice show and the audience seemed to enjoy it as well!

John Oates not Hall and Oates

Still sounds amazing. Super talented singer songwriter. As a kid of the 70s and 80s really wanted to hear more of his music I knew. To his credit, first thing he said on stage was “If you’re here for a Hall & Oates greatest hits, you came to the wrong show.” Played a lot of deep covers, and finished with 3-4 known H&O songs. Very intimate small show. Spoke with audience members, even though a few probably should have been removed for interjecting too much. Half empty theatre.

Unfortunatel

Some people need to know when to stop. More of a show and tell show , than concert. 🙁

Soul soothing and sooo fulfilling

John Oates and his acoustic band were on fire. It was soulful, groovey, and perfect in the amazing paramount venue. Johns voice has never sounded better.

Disappointing

We missed a bit the energy. Mudic was ok. We hoped to have more than 3 hall & oates songs. And he was not there to take pictures or give signatures.

Want the "OLDIES"

Although John Oates is super talented, I was disappointed that,[for whatever reason] he only sang two of the Hall and Oates songs. That's why we went to his concert. His new songs didn't do it for me!

Outstanding

Concert was outstanding. Very Professional musicians. Enjoyed the show❤️ Unexpected songs were played but very good. Changed it up a bit with new songs. Will be going again to see him in Cornelius , NC.

Dissapointed

Saw him in Boone, NC. He started off with his new material which is alright as of course you don't expect him to go right into the old hits. However as the concert progressed he continued to play songs that most of us didn't come to hear. So I say to myself I'm sure he'll get there soon enough. Well fast forward towards the end of the concert and come to find out he only played 3 songs from Hall and Oates. Not only that but one of the songs was a "reggae version"so I wouldn't consider that a part of the classics. So out of the 15 or so songs that he played, less than 20% of them did anybody in the audience even know. He could have easily filled the majority of the concert with countless Hall and Oates hits but apparently decided not to for whatever reason. Also, he requested that there be no photos/videos during the performance which I found pretty odd. I have never been to a concert in my life where they had such rules. Pretty frustrating and disappointing experience.

I thought Oates was a sidekick in Hall and Oates, I was wrong. Oates is a phenom all on his own-full stop. I am so glad I got the chance to experience him. I am now a huge fan.

Pretty good

The Uptown is a great venue for small concerts. The show itself was pretty good but I’ve seen better (Graham Nash who really involved the audience).

How on earth could John Oates cope without his musical counter part Daryl Hall? Apparently pretty well! Oates definitely showcases a humble amount of talent when he performs tonight to a packed out audience of patrons, who are most likely here because they are the biggest Hall & Oates fans in the world but none the less, own at least a couple of his solo albums. Oates despite appearing as though he is rather quiet and softly spoken, commands this crowd fantastically tearing through some of the biggest tracks of his solos stuff, slipping in a couple of the songs that he penned for Hall & Oates, keeping this gathering happy. He is a fantastic guitarist with a great tone and style of playing. It’s fantastic to hear some of his recent albums coming to life on stage with a band, he focuses mainly on material from his two most recent albums, “The Bluesville Sessions” and “Good Road To Follow”

Hi John, Eileen here. I was so excited to be a part of tonights concert at the Hydro in Glasgow. I was there with my husband. Son and daughter. You guys are amazing, although there was definate tension on stage tonight. Daryl seamed a bit off, which affected the whole performance. I have listened to your music non stop for months since booking my tickets. I was so looking forward to seeing you guys (once in a lifetime, on my bucket list) I'm disappointed (NOT IN YOU JOHN) you are fantastic. Daryl let the whole group down tonight. Sorry to be negative, I'll just keep watching your Dublin concert. AMAZING. Keep safe lots of love Eileen Paton. Xx

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!
