The 10 best Journey songs

Let's face it, AOR just wouldn't have been the same without them – here are Journey's ten best tracks

Journey walking through a park

For many, Journey are the band who define AOR better than anyone else. Their catalogue glitters with unforgettable anthems, which not only contain massive choruses, but also the sort of musicianship you might expect from a band who began life as jazz rock instrumentalists before embracing the melodic rock style for which they’re renowned. We've gone through the band's back catalogue and hand-picked their 10 finest moments.

10. Girl Can’t Help It (1986)

After taking a break from the band to work on his solo album Street Talk , vocalist Steve Perry was persuaded to return to the fold for 1986's Raised On Radio album. While the production shows a clear-cut influence of the times, Perry’s vocals shine as brightly as ever, while Jonathan Cain’s smooth keyboards complement Neal Schon ’s edgy guitar stride.

9. Faithfully (1983)

This is the way Journey explained the problems of trying to carry on a relationship while out on the road touring. One of the stand-out tracks from 1983's Frontiers , Faithfully has a soft lilt that exposes an emptiness. However, this is augmented by the lush rhythm and the way that Steve Perry croons his way through without ever wallowing in over emotional hyperbole. A power ballad in the best Journey tradition.

8. Lovin, Touchin’, Squeezin’ (1979)

Anyone who thinks that Journey aren’t capable of anything other than slushy ballads really should check out Lovin, Touchin’, Squeezin’ from 1979's Evolution album. It has a funk groove, and while the tempo is very much of the balladic kind, Neal Schon stabs through with some electrifying moments. What’s more, Steve Perry’s vocals soar impressively to ensure maximum dramatic impact. One of the highlights on Evolution .

7. Lights (1978)

The opening song from 1978's Infinity record – the album that introduced Steve Perry to the world, and also put the band’s new-found melodic style on display for the very first time. It’s easy to tell why American radio fell in love with Journey at this point in time. The music is filled with commercial astuteness, the harmonies are sublime and the whole timbre of Lights is evocative and stylish. This oozes the sort of class that would become the norm for Journey in the coming years.

6. Who’s Cryin’ Now (1981)

Who’s Cryin’ Now begins with an unvarnished piano piece from Jonathan Cain, on which Steve Perry builds his rich tone. And Ross Vallory provides some tasteful bass lines, to underline the whole feel of the song. This is the type of track that accentuates Perry’s love for great soul singers, while it also showcases the way in which Journey stood apart from all the huge selling AOR masters, and why Escape is regarded as the classic Journey album.

5. Stone In Love (1981)

The fact this song opens up with shards of Neal Schon's guitar riffing proves that Journey were always prepared to give full weight to the heavier side of their talent. And Steve Perry also comes across with a lot more power than you might expect. This is a song where Journey never forget about the melody, but also give free rein to a rocky vibe. It also accentuates that Escape was always far more than just a collection of power ballads.

4. Any Way You Want It (1980)

It may seem odd, but this song was actually inspired by Thin Lizzy , with whom Journey had toured a couple of years before recording the Departure album in 1980. But when you dig down and analyse the way in which the vocals are constructed, and the interchange between the instruments, then the influence becomes a lot clearer. There’s a gliding feel to the guitar parts that does feel like it is Thin Lizzy influenced, and Steve Perry adopts a storytelling style that is close to the Phil Lynott approach – and the whole feel suits Journey superbly.

3. Wheel In The Sky (1978)

Wheel In The Sky was co-written by Robert Fleischman, the band’s original choice of vocalist when they moved into a more commercial direction. However, when Fleischman didn’t work out and was replaced by Steve Perry, the song was thankfully retained. It starts with a flashing guitar groove, through which Perry cuts with a vibrant performance. In some ways, this is a basic live performance from the band, bringing a heavier dynamic to bear, but this fitted right into the whole feel of Infinity , and showed Journey could pound with the best.

2. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) (1983)

After the enormous success of the Escape album, how did the band choose to open up their next album Frontiers ? With a powerhouse rocker than fitted right into an era where AOR was beginning to become a little less reliant on studio technology and celebrated talent. Of course, the rich production is evident here, but what makes the song work superbly is that way Jonathan Cain, Steve Perry and Neal Schon intertwine. There’s a buoyancy in Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) that tells of a band who are really playing off of each other’s strengths. The result is undeniably passionate.

1. Don’t Stop Believin’ (1981)

Is there anyone on the planet who does not know this song? It has got to be one of the most exposed tracks over the past two decades or so. And, because it’s so well known, it’s very easy to lose sight of just why this is so popular. Because Don’t Stop Believin’ is a peerless example of musical genius. Everything about it is simply perfect – the musicality, the vocals, the simple structure, the insistent melody… hell, this is not just Journey’s best song, it’s one of the truly landmark moments of the 80s.

The Best Song From Every Journey Album

The history of Journey is typically told through the prism of three principal eras, each relating to their frontmen .

Gregg Rolie was the co-founding first singer, featured on a trio of early albums including their self-titled 1975 debut, 1976's Look into the Future and 1977's Next . Journey's most popular period featured successor Steve Perry , who helmed blockbusters like 1981's Escape and 1983's Frontiers . Then, there's modern-day singer Arnel Pineda , who helped Journey back to platinum status on 2008's Revelation .

As you'll see on this ranking of the Best Song From Every Journey Album, however, there's more to the story. Robert Fleischman played a small, but important role in the band's transition from fusion rock toward more pop-friendly sounds. Perry and Rolie shared the mic for three albums – 1978's Infinity , 1979's Evolution and 1980's Departure – as Journey found their commercial footing. And the band also had a too-often-forgotten era with Steve Augeri, who sang on 2001's Arrival and 2005's Generations .

Those albums didn't meet sales expectations, and Augeri soon exited – but not before making some important contributions. Pineda, meanwhile, kept things going with 2011's Eclipse , which marked the band's second-straight Top 20 hit – and their eighth total, including a run of five in a row between 1980 and 1996 where no album finished lower than No. 8.

Let's go inside these best-selling studio projects in search of the most memorable moments from every time period. Singers may come, and singers most certainly may go, but some things remain. Namely, the Best Song From Every Journey Album ...

Best songs about life’s journey, best songs about life’s changes, best songs about life and death, modern pop songs about life, r&b and hip-hop songs about life, country songs about life, songs about life's struggles, songs about life's lessons, songs about living life fully, songs about life for a funeral or memorial service.

Example of a song about life's journey over an image of a person playing the guitar

Below are a few artists singing about the reflections and revelations made after taking journeys of the mind. Through their experiences, you’ll glean how these experiences lead to either affirmations or resolutions.

1. “One” by U2

While the meaning of the song is ambiguous, it’s nonetheless about relationships, whether they are political, social, or familial. The singer reveals that what is vital in life revolves around us all supporting one another and living life to the fullest .

2. “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay” by Otis Redding

Posthumously released in 1967, Redding’s song was the first of its kind to top the charts at number one. For six weeks after vocal cord surgery, he was forced to sit outside his temporary home—a boathouse in Sausalito—recovering and reflecting on the life that brought him there.

3. “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young

The full moon has been significant for Young’s decision-making, meaning that he would often decide to join projects guided by its presence. His long career now includes numerous environmental advocacy roles.

4. “Yesterday” by The Beatles

One man’s journey comes to a standstill in “Yesterday” as the subject of the song chooses to live in the past rather than move on after a breakup. He needs time to mourn a significant loss.

5. “Husavik” by Molly Sandén and Will Ferrel

This Icelandic-English song is about a partner who realizes that her journey no longer includes following her love interest—it’s at home. No longer will she give up her heart to follow the dreams of another, but she needs him to see that it’s his home, too.

Experiences and dreams mandate one’s path in life. No matter what happens, hope is the underlying vehicle for change.

6. “Náttúra” by Björk

“Náttúra” has two meanings. The first is about environmental preservation, while the second is about convincing others to adopt the same mindset. This change in behavior is what Icelandic artist Björk hopes to achieve through protesting pollution while promoting Icelandic heritage.

7. “Redemption Song” by Bob Marley & The Wailers

Bob Marley dedicated his life to the Rastafari movement, relief for the socially deprived, and living a life that was true to himself and his beliefs. For these reasons, Marley is an icon in the African diaspora fighting for rights and truth. That makes this one of the top albums to listen to before you die .

8. “Season of Wither” by Aerosmith

You’ll come to this song at different times in your life, and with a different take on its meaning each time. But, because it’s almost so foreboding by nature, you won’t be able to help but choose the worst parts of your life on which to reflect.

9. “Sweet Sixteen” by Billy Idol

When love turns to obsession, there’s no other song that competes. Idol’s interpretation of one man’s lifelong plight to retrieve a lost love highlights how passion turns into addiction. That compulsion is now the famous Coral Castle located in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

10. “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke

Civil rights, the search for equality, and desegregation are fluid thoughts within this song. Although Cooke may not have been alive to see the changes, his song resonates with communities on the paths toward better tomorrows. It’s truly an inspirational song .

Example of a song about life and death over an image of a person playing the drums

Both in fictional and non-fictional references, songs about life and death take hold. Below you’ll discover ones that match truth and circumstance against the backdrop of stories told with creative license.

11. “Who Wants to Live Forever” by Queen

Queen was commissioned to write and perform this beautiful song for the original Highlander film starring Christopher Lambert. In it, Lambert’s character must say goodbye to his true love, knowing he’ll outlive any lover now or in the future.

12. “Buffalo Soldier” by Bob Marley & The Wailers

The Buffalo Soldiers were African Americans fighting against Native Americans during the Indian Wars from 1866 to the 1890s. Marley’s song reveals the protest and subjugation of people being forced to kill and create a subjugated people.

13. “Lithium” by Nirvana

Lithium is a drug used by doctors to help prevent the risk of suicide. The song is about a man who finds god amid suicidal thoughts. Tragically, Nirvana’s lead singer committed suicide not many years later.

14. “November Rain” by Guns-n-Roses

The prolific “November Rain” may be about contemplation or shadows. Nonetheless, as the song and interpretations go, the rain can only last so long.

15. “Ebony Eyes” by The Everly Brothers

In the fictional song, “Ebony Eyes,” the story unfolds with a marriage prevented by a plane crash, flight 1203. While the song was banned from the UK radio for being too upsetting, it reached 8 th in the pop charts here in the US.

Because life is categorized by individual experiences, songs that can resonate with your personal experiences will be diverse. Considering that, each of the artists below has a unique way of conveying life with meaning.

16. “Yellow” by Coldplay

Commitment and sacrifice are inherent in the lyrics. That devotion has less to do with love and more to do with humanity as a whole.

17. “Good Times” by All Time Low

Creative exploration of one’s life isn’t without the “bare-knuckle” recognition of a recent past. It’s also an appreciation of how one’s past helps them find the nerve to move forward into a life unknown.

18. “I Lived” by OneRepublic

Gut-tethered, honest lyrics pay homage to a fan with cystic fibrosis. The words conjure an ambition to live past one’s limitations and create a life worth living.

19. “Float On” by Modest Mouse

The song reflects on the idea that no matter how much pain or strife comes at you, there’s an absolute truth to living. No matter how heavy the events seem right now, things will eventually get better.

20. “Running with the Wolves” by Courtney Jenaé and Adrian Grahn

This super short tune on the “Eurovision” soundtrack has a distinct theme of wolves and pack running. The underlying theme rests on finding a space where you belong among people that accept you for who you are.

Example of a hip-hop song about life over an image of a concert

The few songs below are about resolution and strength. Sometimes in the journey of the mind that brings you there.

21. “Good as Hell” by Lizzo

This “self-loving anthem” by Lizzo is about finding your true self above the pain. Although relationships end, there are no reasons to get down on the fabulous person that you are.

22. “7 Years” by Lukas Graham

This piano-led song leads the listener down a path of remembrance. In it, you’ll discover that achieving great things requires that you bring your whole self along the way.

23. “Just Fine” by Mary J. Blige

Blige sings that no matter what is happening in life, or how wild it seems, as long as you’re positive and doing everything you want to do, everything will be just fine.

24. “Soldier of Love” by Sade

A trumpet and snare drum engage the listener from the onset. Then the lyrics invite you into a world where the singer is an expert on love. She knows her journey is to remain steadfast in the goal of achieving all things related to life with respect.

25. “Not Afraid” by Eminem

If you’re looking for a king of life anthem, take a listen to Eminem’s “Not Afraid.” You’ll come to realize that it’s less about life’s little transgressions and more about being bigger than them.

The country songs below speak to the reflective journey. Everything you experience makes you who you are today.

26. “Life Changes” by Thomas Rhett

Rhett makes a case for being open to the circumstances as they come. That thinking has led him to find a wife, have three daughters, and enjoy a budding career. All of this has been the result of being open to love as it became available.

27. “The House That Built Me” by Miranda Lambert

Lambert’s song recognizes that returning home can help you remember who you are and also help with the healing process on this short road of life.

28. “Letter to Me” by Brad Paisley

Paisley's song reflects on the idea of writing a letter to your younger self. He also understands that fatherhood can give you a second chance to make things right.

29. “Fifteen” by Taylor Swift

First loves are going to happen with or without a happy ending. Swift's song doesn't just come from that angle, though. She also begins with the idea that you can't take everything so seriously in life.

30. “Springsteen” by Eric Church

Some people merely exist in our lives fleetingly or because their presence was triggered by a circumstance. That said, they still have value, because without them, you wouldn’t be the person you are today.

This selection of songs about life's struggles includes success, home life, relationships, and becoming who you're meant to be.

31. "On Top of the World" by Imagine Dragons

"On Top of the World" is a personal, reflective song for the Imagine Dragons members due to the many years it took to find success. Some of the members even struggled through difficulties like divorce and depression, which only add to the depth of the song.

32. "Fighter" by Christina Aguilera

Aguilera wrote "Fighter" in response to a chaotic childhood as a means for catharsis. Rather than dwell on the journey, she instead found transcendence out of the pain, making her stronger.

33. "Go the Distance" by Roger Bart

"Go the Distance" was written for the Walt Disney animation Hercules. Sung by Roger Bart, it's the overview of the hero's journey to restore his godhood.

34. "Titanium" by Sia, David Guetta

Words, "bullets," a haunted love, sticks, and stones are no match for Sia as she reminds the unnamed person that he can't and won't get to her no matter what he tries.

Sia is known for her electro and indie-pop style, with this song being no exception.

35. "(I Keep on) Rising Up" by Mike Doughty

Attraction to the wrong person is undoubtedly a struggle for many. In this song, Mike Doughty reminds his ex he’ll keep getting back up no matter what she throws at him to keep him down.

36. "Reason to Believe" by Karen Dalton

This 1966 acoustic song from Karen Dalton is about the doubt one partner can cause in the other. The constant gaslighting and lying do something to them, but it's never healthy or good.

This one has the rawest, most bluesy vibe of the songs listed here.

We’ve chosen songs about life’s lessons, calling to relationships, climbing toward success, and overcoming adversity.

37. "Survivor" Destiny's Child

Beyoncé, from the iconic Destiny's Child, wrote "Survivor" in response to the critics giving terrible press to the group after it went through multiple members in under a year.

She embraces the criticism as a tool to create what would be the group's defining moment.

38. "I Am Moana (Song of the Ancestors)" by Auli'I Cravalho and Rachel House

Written for the eponymous movie, “Moana,” the song heralds the ancestry of a young girl on a mission.

She discovers that her internal strength stems from generations of great people who are her ancestors.

39. "Firework" by Katy Perry

Katy Perry based the inspiration for “Firework” on a Jack Kerouac book and her husband at the time, but it’s become a kind of epitaph for how she’d like to go out.

Overall, it’s an anthem for living, for being far from anything commonplace. Instead, it’s about being so amazing that people are in awe of you.

40. "What Doesn’t Kill you (Stronger)" by Kelly Clarkson

“Stronger” is about empowerment and overcoming adversity in relationships and life. Clarkson mentioned she wanted the music to be inspirational instead of telling a sad story.

41. "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus

In "The Climb," you may find resonance if you feel like life has been a series of mountain climbing moments, and you’ve constantly had to overcome struggles just to keep moving.

Notably, the lyrics remind the listener that there will always be another even after they reach one mountaintop.

42. "Perfect Strangers" by Jonas Blue ft. JP Cooper

Here’s an exciting song from British performers Jonas Blue and JP Cooper about not overthinking love. It’s about going with the flow, being open to the possibilities, and enjoying a shared space with someone while you have it.

Check out the section below for songs about embracing and living life fully.

43. "Hall of Fame" by The Script, Will.i.am

In short, the theme of “Hall of Fame” is to follow your heart and leave the drama of fame behind. That includes money.

More than that, it’s about being present in your life — no matter what occupation, dream, or desire.

44. "Closer to Fine" by The Indigo Girls

“Closer to Fine” has some great advice about being okay in life’s disarray. One can walk in the unknown, live in constant seeking, and not find the definitive answer in any one specific location.

Sometimes the journey of finding and looking for answers is sufficient for life and living. At least you know you’re trying to get there — wherever “there” is.

45. "Wake Up" by Arcade Fire

“Wake Up,” like most songs from Arcade Fire, is full of typical abstract ideas, metaphors, and more significant meanings.

Ultimately, the song travels from innocence to acknowledging mortality.

46. "We Are Young" by Fun.

Everyone has a moment in time they relive over and over again with their friends. “Do you remember that one time…”

It happens when you’re young, carefree (or too carefree), but you live in that moment like it’s the most vital moment — until the next one comes along.

47. "The Nights" by Avicii

Avicii wrote “The Nights” in honor of his dad, who said, "One day you'll leave this world behind. So, live a life you will remember." He encouraged his son to travel, experience life, and find adventures away from home and far-off places.

In retrospect, the advice was bittersweet, given the singer died before his time.

Note the gentleness of the lyrics in each of the songs below where, except for one piece, the music is mellow.

48. "Float On" by Modest Mouse

In contrast to this band's more somber music, Modest Mouse’s “Float On” is a song about reassurance.

Bad things happen, as they always do, but things will always get better. It’s not always easy to find this perspective, but it’s generally a reasonable condition of bad events to eventually find oneself on the other side.

49. "Blackbird" by The Beatles

Paul McCartney wrote “Blackbird” in response to the race riots of the 60s in the US. His ambition was to give people hope in a dark time of fighting for civil rights.

Still, the singing works for a funeral because it’s about leaving, flying away into the night, and arising into a specific moment or space in time. The music is uncomplicated, too. It’s simply McCartney’s voice accompanied by an acoustic guitar.

50. "Good Old Days" by Macklemore, Kesha

You’ve probably heard some people say how even the tough days are the days you look back on.

They’re the ones that are incredibly difficult to get through while they’re happening, but time and memory heal the wounds, leaving you with something better than the pain.

51. "Do You Realize" by The Flaming Lips

The truth is that everyone will die, and that’s what the songwriter wants you to know. But more than that, he wants to live.

To live for today, tell people you love them, and just be present in everything you do — know the time you have on Earth is finite, but you can do nothing except be grateful for the time you have.

52. "Sing a Song for You" by Tim Buckley

Tim Buckley’s song is devotional at its core. Layered atop is a longing for someone, but, more so, it’s about being so utterly enamored with a love that encompasses everything you are.

They’re your breath, your life, and your reason for living.

Celebrating Remarkable Journeys

It’s not easy to find fitting songs to celebrate someone because of all the complex histories and journeys they’ve lived throughout life. But hopefully, you’ve found several here that you.

The Harris-Walz campaign’s love affair with pop music continued in full force on the second night (Aug. 20) of the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

Charli XCX, Kamala Harris, Megan Thee Stallion, Chappell Roan and Beyoncé

What Can Kamala Harris’ Presidential Campaign Tell Us About the Current State of Pop Fandom?

The real magic, however, came during the roll call. During each convention, each U.S. state and territory casts their votes for the party’s presidential nominee; last night’s roll call was a symbolic, in-person version of an August online meeting, in which Vice President Kamala Harris became the Democratic party’s official nominee. DJ Cassidy served as the roll call’s master of ceremonies, using his beloved “Pass the Mic” template to rattle off each state and territory represented in the venue.

For this year’s roll call, the delegates reached across decades of music to illustrate a rich sonic collage of American music history. From country and reggaeton to rock and hip-hop, the breadth of America’s rich blend of cultures and traditions illuminated the United Center arena. To top it all off, Lil Jon made a surprise appearance on the floor of the convention to help his home state of Georgia cast its votes for Harris. As if his mere presence wasn’t enough, he also treated the fired-up crown to a bombastic rendition of his DJ Snake -assisted “Turn Down For What,” which he flipped into a musical tribute to Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Georgia wasn’t the only state to make the most of their moment, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Harris’ home state of California all played multiple songs while they casted their votes.

Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Freedom’ hits #1 after Harris boost

B eyoncé’s powerful anthem “ Freedom ,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, has officially claimed the top spot on Billboard’s R&B Singles Sales chart. This is thanks to a significant boost from an unexpected source. The track originally resonated with themes of empowerment and resilience. However, it found new life after being featured in a campaign video for Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris recently accepted the Democratic Party nomination for president.

The Song’s Journey to the Top

“Freedom” was originally released as part of Beyoncé’s critically acclaimed Lemonade album in 2016. The song is a fiery collaboration with Kendrick Lamar. As a result, it quickly became a standout track. The song is praised for its raw energy and powerful message. Over the years, “Freedom” has been embraced as an anthem of liberation and resistance. Thus, it’s often used in social justice movements and protests.

Its recent resurgence can be attributed to its prominent use in Kamala Harris’ campaign materials. The song’s defiant lyrics and bold sound provided the perfect backdrop for Harris’ message of breaking barriers and championing equality. As the campaign video gained traction across social media and news outlets, so too did the popularity of “Freedom.” Thus, this wound up propelling it to the top of the R&B Singles Sales chart.

Historical Significance: The Enduring Power of ‘Freedom’

“Freedom” is more than just a chart-topping collaboration between two of the biggest names in music. Also, it’s a song deeply rooted in the tradition of protest music. As a result, it has long played a vital role in shaping social and political movements. Historically, music has been a powerful tool for marginalized communities to express resistance, hope, and the demand for change.

When Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar released “Freedom” in 2016, it quickly became an anthem for the Black Lives Matter movement and other social justice causes. The song’s powerful lyrics—combined with its intense, gospel-infused production—captured the struggles and aspirations of those fighting for racial equality and justice. Kendrick Lamar’s verse, in particular, stands out. In addition, the verse stands out for its raw, unapologetic depiction of the African American experience. Thus, echoing the voices of past generations who have fought for freedom and civil rights.

In the years since its release, “Freedom” has been used in countless protests, rallies, and public demonstrations. Thus, solidifying its place as a modern protest anthem. Its resurgence during Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign underscores its continued relevance and the ongoing fight for justice and equality in America.

Why Protest Music Matters

Protest music , like “Freedom,” serves as both a rallying cry and a unifying force. It brings people together, providing a shared language and a sense of solidarity in the face of oppression. For decades, artists have used their platforms to speak out against injustice, and songs like “Freedom” continue this tradition. Thus, reminding us that the struggle for equality is far from over.

For readers who are interested in exploring more protest music, both past and present, there are numerous resources available that delve into the history of this powerful genre. From classic anthems like Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” to modern tracks like Childish Gambino’s “This Is America,” protest music remains a vital part of the cultural and political landscape.

A Perfect Match: Music and Message

The choice to use “Freedom” in Kamala Harris’ campaign was more than just a nod to popular culture. Also, it was a strategic alignment of values. Both the song and Harris’ campaign speak to themes of empowerment, justice, and the ongoing fight for equality. In many ways, the track encapsulates the spirit of Harris’ political message. Thus, making it a natural fit for her campaign.

The collaboration between the song and the campaign has struck a chord with listeners. Many of these listeners have revisited “Freedom” and its powerful lyrics in light of the current political climate. The track’s rise to the top of the R&B chart is a testament to its enduring relevance and the impact of its message.

Fan Reactions: Celebrating a Powerful Anthem

Fans of both Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar have taken to social media to celebrate the song’s return to prominence. Many have praised the song for its continued relevance. Thus, noting how its themes of resilience and resistance remain as potent today as when it was first released. The song’s chart-topping success has been seen as a victory for music that speaks truth to power. Also, it’s a reminder of the role that art can play in social and political movements.

What This Means for the 2024 Election

The use of “Freedom” in Kamala Harris’ campaign is just one example of how music and culture can intersect with politics. As the 2024 presidential race heats up, it’s likely that other candidates will also turn to powerful songs to help convey their messages. For Harris, the use of “Freedom” not only underscores her commitment to justice and equality but also aligns her with a broader cultural movement that values these ideals.

As the song continues to climb the charts, it serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that music can have—not just in the realm of entertainment, but in shaping the discourse around important social and political issues.

A Timely Triumph for ‘Freedom’

Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar’s “Freedom” reaching number one on Billboard’s R&B Singles Sales chart is a momentous occasion. Thus, underscoring the track’s enduring influence. With its recent resurgence tied to Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, the song’s message of liberation and justice resonates now more than ever. As the election season progresses, “Freedom” stands as a powerful symbol of the ongoing fight for equality, both in the political arena and beyond.

What to Know About Every Song and Artist Featured in the DNC’s Dance Party Roll Call

Rapper Lil Jon performs with the Georgia delegation during the Ceremonial Roll Call of States on the second day of the Democratic National Convention at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, on August 20, 2024.

T he roll call vote at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday felt more like a huge dance party.

While Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz had already been confirmed as the party’s presidential and vice presidential nominees through an earlier virtual vote, the DNC decided to retain the tradition of a convention floor roll call that this year turned into more of a ceremonial celebration.

And they certainly had a lot of fun doing it. Curated by DJ Cassidy, who was dressed in a shiny blue suit, each delegation was backed by a specific soundtrack associated with their state or territory.

The moment proved a hit among viewers at home, with many social media users commenting on the energetic atmosphere and some contrasting it with the more staid Republican roll call last month.

I'm gonna just go ahead and call this moment with DJ Cassidy calling the roll call the greatest moment of the DNC. pic.twitter.com/VDxrtAcYIG — Amee Vanderpool (@girlsreallyrule) August 21, 2024
I never teared up during a Democratic Convention Roll Call before! That was FANTASTIC! The joy, the exuberance, the energy and excitement! I went back to see how the roll call at the RNC compared! Hahahaha! It was like a wake! SAD. — bettemidler (@BetteMidler) August 21, 2024
I’m sorry but this #DNC2024 roll call with DJ Cassidy, themed state music and party/club atmosphere is blowing the RNC’s roll call out of the water. It looks like a giant party and celebration and everyone in that room looks like they’re having a blast. — Meghan McCain (@MeghanMcCain) August 21, 2024

Here are all the songs that were played and why they may have been chosen to represent each delegation, in order of appearance:

“ Higher Love ,” as covered by Whitney Houston and Kygo.

Houston’s 1990 cover of the Steve Winwood song was remixed by Norwegian DJ Kygo in 2019. The electronic dance track was played in 2020 after President Joe Biden’s victory speech, and it was hailed at the time by music critics as a choice that spoke to diverse audiences with the unifying message of love. It was also played Monday night in Chicago after Biden’s speech at the DNC .

“ Sweet Home Alabama ” by rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, which has long been embraced as an unofficial state anthem and symbol of Southern pride.

“ Feel It Still ” by Portugal. The Man, an indie rock band from Wasilla—the Alaskan city where Republican Sarah Palin once served as mayor before becoming governor. The band is known for embracing its Alaskan roots, with songs and music videos paying tribute to growing up in Alaska and the Alaskan wilderness. Its founding members are also strong advocates of Native Alaskan communities.

American Samoa

“ The Edge of Glory ” by Lady Gaga, who had previously performed a private concert for DNC delegates in 2016 and sang the national anthem at Biden’s inauguration in 2021.

“ Edge of Seventeen ” from the debut album of rock and roll icon Stevie Nicks, whose hometown is Phoenix. Nicks dedicated a piano version of her song “Show Them the Way” to Biden and Harris in 2020, and in 2022 she urged people to head to the polls for the 2022 midterm elections with poem-turned-song “Get It Back.”

“ Don’t Stop ” by rock band Fleetwood Mac, of which Nicks was a member. The song has become closely associated with former President and Arkansas governor Bill Clinton, who used it as the theme song of his 1992 presidential campaign. The band, which broke up in 1987, even reunited for a performance of “Don’t Stop” at Clinton’s 1993 Inaugural Gala.

“ September ” by Earth, Wind & Fire. One of the band’s lead singers, Philip Bailey, was from Denver. In 2016, the band protested the use of “September” at the Republican National Convention without their consent.

Connecticut

“ Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours) ” by Stevie Wonder, who performed the song live at the 2008 DNC. Former President Barack Obama, who spoke at the DNC on Tuesday, once hailed Wonder as his “musical hero” and he and former First Lady Michelle have enjoyed a long friendship with the singer, who has appeared at Obama’s rallies and performed for them numerous times both in public and in private.

Democrats Abroad

“ Love Train ” by The O'Jays. The song’s opening line is perhaps the most fitting for Democrats abroad: “People all over the world, join hands.” The band also performed the song for the virtual 2020 DNC, modifying the lyrics of the song to: “Get on the Biden and the Harris Train.”

Washington, D.C.

“ Let Me Clear My Throat ” by D.C.-born rapper DJ Kool.

“ I Won’t Back Down ” by Florida-formed rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The song was notably used by former Republican President George W. Bush during his 2000 presidential campaign until Petty sent a cease and desist letter, arguing that the song implied an endorsement. Petty would go on to sing the song at Al Gore’s home after the Democratic candidate conceded the presidency to Bush.

In 2020, Petty’s family, after the singer died in 2017, similarly sent Donald Trump a cease and desist letter for playing “I Won’t Back Down” at his rally, while the family said they were “ touched ” that Biden used the song during his post-election celebrations in 2020 and offered their congratulations.

“ Turn Down for What ” by DJ Snake and Lil Jon. In perhaps the most viral moment of the roll call, the song was performed live by Lil Jon, who rapped his way down the steps of the Chicago United Center while leading the crowd to chant: “We’re not going back”—one of the Harris campaign’s central messages.

The Atlanta-born and -based artist had previously participated in a “Turn Out for What” celebrity-studded music video for a Rock the Vote campaign in 2014.

“ Espresso ” by Sabrina Carpenter. (It’s unclear what the song’s connection to Guam is, though it’s a song of the summer .)

“ 24K Magic ” by Bruno Mars, who was born and raised in Honolulu.

“ Private Idaho ” by the B-52s, though the Georgia-based band has said the song isn’t really about the state of Idaho.

“ Sirius ” by British rock band the Alan Parsons Project. The instrumental song has become closely associated with the Chicago Bulls NBA team and its former star Michael Jordan.

“ Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough ” by Michael Jackson, the Indiana-born King of Pop.

“ Celebration ” by Kool & the Gang. (It’s unclear what the song’s connection to Iowa is, though it’s a timeless bop.)

“ Carry on Wayward Son ” by Kansas, the rock band founded in the state’s capital Topeka.

“ First Class ” by Jack Harlow, who was born in Louisville. Harlow performed last year at a rally by Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who was among Harris’ shortlist of contenders for running mate.

“ All I Do Is Win ” by DJ Khaled, who was born in New Orleans and has fundraised for Democrats and supported Hillary Clinton in 2016, including by performing at a campaign rally, and he participated in a Grammys sketch in 2018 mocking Trump..

“ Shut Up and Dance ” by Walk the Moon, a pop band that doesn’t have any apparent connection to the state of Maine but whose members have said their fear and shock after Trump’s 2016 election victory inspired their music.

“ Respect ” by the late great Aretha Franklin, a staunch Democrat who performed at multiple conventions over the years, including the 1968 DNC that was also held in Chicago.

Massachusetts

“ I’m Shipping up to Boston ” by Dropkick Murphys, with lyrics by American folk singer Woody Guthrie. The Celtic punk band was formed in Quincy, Mass., and the song—which was made famous after its use in the 2006 Boston-based film The Departed —is widely used to represent Boston at sporting events. It also served as the entrance music for Biden during his visit to Ireland last year. Dropkick Murphys singer Ken Casey has spoken out in the past against Trump and in support of Democratic candidates.

“ Lose Yourself ” by Eminem, who famously grew up in Detroit. The rapper, who has made no secret of his opposition to Trump, endorsed the Biden-Harris campaign in 2020 and agreed to let “Lose Yourself” be used in a campaign ad; in 2023, he sent Vivek Ramaswamy a cease and desist letter to stop using his songs during the Republican’s short-lived presidential campaign. In 2016, Obama said he listened to “Lose Yourself” to pump himself up before his DNC speech.

Mississippi

“ Twistin’ the Night Away ” by soul singer Sam Cooke, who was born in Clarksdale, Miss. (Another song by Cooke, “A Change Is Gonna Come,” has a long history of use in Democratic politics.)

“ Good Luck, Babe! ” by Chappell Roan. The breakout pop singer from Willard, Mo., has already been referenced by the meme-embracing Harris campaign, which sold camo trucker hats similar to the singer’s “Midwest Princess” merch, prompting an “ is this real? ” reaction from Roan. Earlier this year, the singer turned down an invitation from the White House to perform for a Pride event, saying: “We want liberty, justice and freedom for all. When you do that, that’s when I’ll come.”

“ American Woman ” by Lenny Kravitz. The New York-born singer congratulated Biden and Harris when they won the presidential election in 2020, and he performed at the 2016 DNC as well as at a Biden fundraiser last December.

“ Firework ” by Katy Perry. The 2010 song was blasted at the 2016 DNC, after Hillary Clinton accepted her nomination. Perry, whose song “Roar” was used in a Clinton campaign ad, also performed at the DNC that year. After Harris kicked off her presidential campaign in July, Perry showed her support for the Vice President by sharing a video set to the tune of her new song “Woman’s World.”

“ Mr. Brightside ” by rock band The Killers, which was formed in Las Vegas. The band led by Mormon frontman Brandon Flowers said in 2012 during the presidential election contest between Mitt Romney and Obama that they were “neutral,” but the band became more politically outspoken over time, releasing an anti-Trump anthem in 2019 called “Land of the Free” and saying they felt “ less anxious ” after Biden was elected in 2020. This week, the Killers are playing a private concert for DNC guests in Chicago.

New Hampshire

“ Don’t Stop Believin’ ” by San Francisco-formed band Journey. Journey guitarist Neal Schon served bandmate Jonathan Cain with a cease and desist letter after Cain played the song for Trump at Mar-a-Lago. “Journey is not, and should not, be political,” the letter said at the time. It’s unclear if the DNC got approval to play the song on Tuesday.

“ Born in the USA ” by Bruce Springsteen, a proud native of New Jersey and outspoken Democrat .

“ Confident ” by Demi Lovato. The Albuquerque-born singer, a prominent critic of Trump, previously performed the song at the 2016 DNC and has endorsed Harris for the presidency.

“ Empire State of Mind ” by Jay Z and Alicia Keys. The song, written as an homage to New York City has been embraced as one of the city’s most popular anthems. Its singers, Jay Z and Keys, are also known for their support of Democratic campaigns and have performed at past DNCs. Jay Z has appeared at rallies for Obama and Clinton, while Keys joined Harris on the campaign trail in 2020.

North Carolina

“ Raise Up ” by North Carolina-born rapper Petey Pablo.

North Dakota

“ Girl on Fire ” by Alicia Keys. (The song’s connection to the state is unclear.)

Northern Mariana Islands

“ Ain’t No Mountain High Enough ” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. While the artists have no apparent connection to the territory, the Mariana Islands —of which the U.S. commonwealth is a part of—are the highest slopes of a massive undersea mountain range.

“ Green Light ” by Ohio-born singer John Legend, who has a history of supporting Democratic candidates and has said that his daughter looks up to Harris. Legend is also set to perform at the 2024 DNC.

“ Ain’t Going Down (Till the Sun Comes Up) ” by Tulsa native Garth Brooks. Brooks, who has identified as Republican, has performed at the inaugurations of Presidents from both parties, including Biden’s in 2021—though he said at the time his appearance was “not a political statement” but “a statement of unity.”

“ Float On ” by Portland-based rock band Modest Mouse. The band members’ political leanings are unclear, though frontman Isaac Brock once said that “Float On” was written as a response to the “bad news” of that era, including George W. Bush’s presidency.

Pennsylvania

“ Motownphilly ” by Philadelphia’s Boyz II Men, who previously performed at the 2016 DNC, and “ Black and Yellow” by Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa, who has praised President Biden’s approach to marijuana criminalization reform.

Puerto Rico

“ Despacito ” by Puerto Rican singers Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. The 2017 hit song was credited for boosting the U.S. territory’s tourism. In 2020, Fonsi rallied Latino voters to support Biden for the presidency, while Daddy Yankee controversially supported Republican presidential nominee John McCain in 2008 and performed at that year’s RNC.

Rhode Island

“ Shake It Off ” by Taylor Swift, who owns a multimillion-dollar mansion in Rhode Island. The TIME Person of the Year previously slammed Trump and backed the Biden-Harris campaign in 2020. Swift has not yet endorsed a candidate for the November election, but rumors are swirling that she may endorse Harris closer to the election date.

South Carolina

“ Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine ” by singer James Brown, who was born in Barnwell, S.C..

South Dakota

“ What I Like About You ” by the Romantics. (The reason for the song choice is unclear.)

“ 9 to 5 ” by Nashville-based country singer Dolly Parton, who has famously stayed away from revealing her personal politics.

“ Texas Hold ’Em ” by Beyoncé. Like her husband Jay Z, the Houston-born singer has been a prominent supporter of Democratic candidates. She sang the national anthem during Obama’s inauguration in 2013, performed at a concert for Clinton in 2016, and endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket in 2020.

While she has not officially endorsed Harris, Beyoncé has apparently allowed the Vice President to use her song “Freedom” throughout the presidential campaign.

“ Animal ” by Utah rock band Neon Trees. The band has not commented publicly on their political leanings, but they performed a Rock the Vote show ahead of a televised debate between Obama and Romney in 2012.

“ Stick Season ” by Vermont native Noah Kahan, who has said the song is “very clearly about Vermont.” Kahan has mostly refrained from commenting on politics but posted in 2020, after Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders suspended his presidential primary campaign, that he “would have loved to be a citizen in Bernie’s America.” ( Sanders spoke at the DNC on Tuesday in support of Harris.)

U.S. Virgin Islands

“ VI to the Bone ,” rapper Mic Love’s ode to his native Virgin Islands.

“ The Way I Are ” by Timbaland. In 2020, the producer and rapper born in Norfolk, Va., was among the public figures who called on then presidential candidate Biden to select a Black woman as his running mate.

“ Can’t Hold Us ” by Seattle hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Macklemore has long been a vocal critic of Trump, and in May he slammed Biden in a pro-Palestinian protest song condemning Israel’s war in Gaza.

West Virginia

“ Take Me Home, Country Roads ” by late country singer John Denver, who was a prominent Democrat. The song—which mentions the state, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and Shenandoah River—has become synonymous with West Virginia, though its writers had never been to the state when they penned the lyrics.

“ Jump Around ” by hip-hop trio House of Pain. The 1992 hit song has been linked to the state’s college football fans, who have made jumping around to it a tradition. House of Pain’s frontman Everlast threatened to send Trump a cease-and-desist letter in 2016 for using “Jump Around” at his campaign events.

“ I Gotta Feeling ” by the Black Eyed Peas, whose connection to the state of Wyoming is unclear, though the group and its members—including will.i.am and Fergie —have been critical of Trump and supportive of Democrats.

“ Kiss ” and “ 1999 ” by Prince, who was born in Minneapolis. The late singer performed alongside Stevie Wonder at the White House for the Obamas and their friends in 2015.

A mash-up of tracks from some of the most prominent West Coast rappers: “ The Next Episode ” by Dr. Dre ft. Snoop Dogg, the latter of whom performed at a party for Democratic donors in 2017 and authorized his song “Drop It Like It’s Hot” to be used in a 2020 Democratic ad encouraging voting; two tracks by Compton native Kendrick Lamar, “ Alright ” and “ Not Like Us ”; and “ California Love ” by 2Pac and Dr. Dre, which closed out the roll call, in keeping with tradition for the presidential nominee’s home state to go last.
