• Practice! Running through your songs once or twice before karaoke day comes can help you figure out any trouble spots in your chosen tracks. You may even realize that you made some bad choices and decide to change the songs altogether. It’s better to know now than when you’re on stage!
• Sing songs you’re comfortable with. This goes along with the tip above. If a song just doesn’t work for you, don’t sing it! You may have to try something new to fit your skill level and vocal range. That’s okay, though—that just makes karaoke more fun and interesting!
• Interact with the audience. You can’t do this until your performing, but if you have the confidence, interact with your audience as much as you can! Even a single act of eye contact can make you appear more confident and connected. You can sing in a mirror during your practice runs if you feel like you need to prepare to interact with the public.
• Breathe! Proper breathing while singing is so important—for your performance, but also your well-being. Pro Golf Champ’s Journey Karaoke Video Goes Viral – See Reactions

A pro golfer has found himself in the rough following his post-tournament karaoke attempt at Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry found themselves atop the leaderboard at the conclusion of the Zurich Classic at TPC Louisiana in Avondale on Sunday. To celebrate, they hit the stage at a nearby entertainment tent.

Once on stage, Lowry worked on his Bud Light while McIlroy joined a karaoke band to belt out his take on the Journey hit.

The result was about what you’d expect from a pro golfer a few beers deep into celebrating a tournament win following his final put of the day.

The Northern Irish golfer was met with cheers from the crowd inside the tent. Some of those watching online had a much different opinion of the performance.

Louder Sound called it “not very good.”

The PGA shared a clip of McIlroy singing on its social media. Most of the song in the video is tough to make out due to poor sound quality.

“Was it that tragic they had to mic up the crowd to takeover the audio?” asked one of the commenters on the PGA Instagram.

The band accompanying the McIlroy and Lowry are the The Molly Ringwalds, a New Orleans-based cover band that performs as retro personalities including Devo, Dee Snider and Pee Wee Herman.

They were understandably excited to share the stage with golf pros regardless of their singing ability.

“Let’s jam again soon!” the band said to McIlroy in a post on Instagram.

In case you were wondering if this is normal behavior on the PGA Tour, NBC Sports says golfers celebrating at this level post-tournament is fairly rare.

“Typically, winners go through their post-win obligations and then take off home – or the next Tour stop,” the outlet reported.

Karaoke Songs People Need To Stop Singing Immediately

Karaoke: it’s a timeless art that’s popular for a reason. Singing your favorite songs after a few drinks is a lot of fun! Yet some song selections are beyond overplayed.

These choices should be avoided at all costs because, well, people tend to screw them up in historic fashion! That’s why I’m calling on everyone to stop performing these ten songs at karaoke.

1. “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion

In the late 90s, most people were subject to hearing this song on the radio endlessly, thanks to it being featured in the smash-hit film  Titanic . However, nearly 30 years later, people still haven’t heard it enough and have decided to torture an entire room by attempting to perform it for karaoke! Some songs are annoying to hear, some are impossible to sing in tune, and some are both: A complex song that grates the ears of everyone who’s listening. Please, everyone, stop singing this song.

2. “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin'” by The Righteous Brothers

Some songs are tailor-made to be belted as loud as you can after enjoying a handful of adult beverages. However, thanks to one blockbuster Hollywood movie, even a classic song can spell disaster for karaoke bars!

3. “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journey

I may be biased, but I maintain that this Journey song is the most overrated track in music history. I don’t want to hear it for the 5,000th time on the radio, at a concert, and especially during karaoke. Journey is a landmark band that rightfully gained millions of fans, but for some reason, “Don’t Stop Believin'” always rubbed me the wrong way. The band has plenty of other worthy songs to sing; can we all agree to retire this particular song for good?

Also, just because Journey can live without Steve Perry doesn’t mean you can successfully sing this classic.

4. “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston

This timeless love ballad is arguably Whitney Houston’s greatest song. However, it has a reputation for being extremely difficult to perform, and many men and women confess the average person shouldn’t attempt to sing it. I’m an avid karaoke fan, and I’ve never heard someone successfully sing “I Will Always Love You.” It seems impossible!

5. “We Didn’t Start the Fire” by Billy Joel

One phrase that comes to mind when witnessing someone attempt to sing this song during a karaoke session: word salad. While wildly popular, the song is so lyrically complex that the singer often struggles to stay ahead of the words. It results in a drunken slurring of nearly all words, and when a song relies so much on its lyrics, it ruins the performance every time. Besides, no one can compete with Billy Joel anyway. Performing this song should be avoided unless you’re a fan of public ridicule.

6. “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin

Choosing the correct karaoke song to win over a skeptical crowd is tricky but not impossible. However, it’s astounding how many singers choose a song like “Kashmir” with multiple minutes-long breaks and no signing parts! The goal of singing karaoke should be to entertain, not bore, the crowd.

7. “At a Medium Pace” by Adam Sandler

This little-known track is my go-to karaoke song, but my girlfriend thinks I should retire it immediately. It’s arguably Adam Sandler’s most filthy song, and it generally delights and disgusts unsuspecting crowds when I perform it. It happens to be a song I can sing perfectly, but the questionable subject matter causes my girlfriend to be embarrassed beyond all belief whenever I belt it out! She has a point: I think it’s time I find a new “perfect” karaoke song.

8. “Livin On a Prayer” by Bon Jovi

Karaoke lovers should stay away from songs with massive key changes midway through. This Bon Jovi chart-topper has one very challenging key change that not even the man himself will attempt in 2023! Fans of this song should attempt to sing it publicly at their own risk.

9. “American Pie” by Don McLean

Many classic songs are deceptive. Songs like “American Pie” have verses many people aren’t aware of until it’s too late, leading to a potentially embarrassing situation on stage! There are whole verses to “American Pie” that people don’t realize they don’t know until it’s scrolling across a screen in front of them and a crowd is watching.

10. “Dream On” by Aerosmith

Many of us dream of having the vocal stylings of Steven Tyler, but none of us have the pipes to come close to belting out a song like “Dream On.” Steven Tyler made a career out of hitting impossibly high notes; odds are you can’t come close to his singing skills, so don’t even attempt it.

Karaoke: a word that strikes joy and terror equally in people's hearts. It can wake the rock star within, make loved ones cringe, and cause people to hide under the table for fear of getting dragged up onstage.

But picking the right song is just as important as being able to sing it. "A great karaoke song must have three components," said David Jacobson, founder and CEO of live entertainment provider TrivWorks .

"One, the entire audience — not just the performer — must know it," he said. "Two, it must be a fun or interesting song — upbeat is great, but it doesn't have to be. And three, it must resonate emotionally with those in the room — preferably by evoking joy, laughter or what takes us nostalgically back to our youth."

And so, to hopefully get you grabbing the mic in no time, here are five ideal karaoke tunes that should fit any room, courtesy of the experts. Don't stop believin'!

"Hugely popular, everyone knows it, ideal for full-room singing," said Jacobson. "Also nostalgic, emotive and just a blast to sing!"

"I Love You Always Forever," Donna Lewis

"It's the perfect combination of a good, once-omnipresent hit song that people have kind of forgotten about," says Brad Nelson, producer of Queens, New York club QED' s "Every Now and Then I Fall Apart," a reading series that features karaoke. "I personally can't hit any of the notes in the bridge, but everyone sings along so it doesn't matter."

"It's upbeat, fast-paced, most people know and like it, everyone can sing the chorus but not everyone can sing the rest," says Jacobson. "If you've got somebody who's memorized the lyrics, like me, it can make it a truly fun and unique experience for the whole room."

Finally, a few general words of advice: Look for a big chorus with harmonies, and a call-and-response from the audience. And avoid torch ballads, sad country tunes and rap, which rarely work, advises Monson.

"And let someone else sing 'Summer of '69' and 'Total Eclipse of the Heart,'" he adds. "You're better than that."

OK, so Rory McIlroy singing karaoke inside a concert tent at TPC Louisiana on Sunday night following he and Shane Lowry ’s win at the Zurich Classic won’t be confused for some of the most iconic rock shows of all-time. But McIlroy’s rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” while Lowry downed a beer onstage was still quite the scene when it comes to celebrations on the PGA Tour.

Typically, winners go through their post-win obligations and then take off for home – or the next Tour stop. McIlroy, however, decided he wouldn't leave New Orleans without grabbing a mic and belting out one of the most popular anthems in history.

Judah and the Lion talk Nashville roots and new, psych-centered album 'The Process'

It's a coincidence that bandmates Judah Akers and Brian Macdonald of Judah and the Lion were both raised by therapist mothers. But now, for their fifth studio album, they're leaning into their roots and bringing psychology and music together.

"The Process," due out May 10, captures the five stages of grief in song.

Judah and the Lion, a Nashville-based folk-alternative band, is best known for songs "Take It All Back 2.0" and "Suit and a Jacket." "The Process" follows their 2022 album "Revival" and 2019's "Pep Talks."

Macdonald and Akers sat down with The Tennessean in Akers' East Nashville home, reminiscing about the band's origins over the kitchen table and sharing about the process of crafting "The Process."

Akers, the lead vocalist, and Macdonald, a mandolinist, first met at Belmont University in Nashville in December 2011. After playing some songs together at the Belmont Bell Tower with drummer Nate Zuercher — who exited the band in 2021 — the rest was history.

Akers, 33, and Macdonald, 31, seemed like brothers as they described their origin story as starving artists, hungry to make it as professional musicians.

"We were splitting a room, sharing rent and a bed, and making peanut butter Nutella tortillas for lunch," Macdonald said.

"Ramen," Akers chimed in.

"I remember you used to make egg mayonnaise sandwiches," Macdonald laughed.

In 2013, touring picked up. The band was opening for Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors and dropped their debut album, "Kids These Days," in 2014.

Since then, they've made appearances at Bonnaroo, Firefly and Music Midtown; opened for Twenty One Pilots, Incubus and Jimmy Eat World; and released five albums and dropped tracks with Kacey Musgraves and Jon Bellion.

Judah and the Lion has become one of Nashville's indie-alt staples.

Working through trauma

"So this kind of started last May," Akers said about crafting the new album. "I was going through the biggest lows of my life with a divorce and a couple of tragic deaths in my family. Just the pandemic, being in the middle of that was already just such a stressful time."

Akers said he wasn't ready to write music about the lows he was experiencing, but he remembered an idea he had while writing their record "Revival." He wanted to attempt to capture the five stages of grief in song.

Akers thought that instead of writing deeply personal songs about painful times, he could write about working through those times instead. So Macdonald and Akers set out to write a psychologically informed album about working through trauma.

Their plan was to write a few songs per each stage of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

"It was so fun to write it that way because now, you know, two or three years past the peak of that hard time, (I) was writing it from a little bit healthier spot," Akers added.

"(I was able) to write it from this space of forgiveness and empathy versus just anger and raw sadness. It's been such a fun process, no pun intended, to write 'The Process.'"

Macdonald said his approach to the writing process was different.

"I think for this story, I was the friend that was trying to be supportive and walking through that journey with Judah," he said.

He had watched the grief process from a different perspective and was able to factor that into the writing. In fact, Macdonald even wrote a full song from the perspective of a friend who is watching their friend grieve.

The song will be released on the deluxe edition, featuring Macdonald on lead vocals for the first time in the band's history.

'The Process' consulted psychology experts

The five stages of grief is a patient-focused, death-adjustment pattern that Swiss-American psychologist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross coined in 1969. While Macdonald and Akers aren't psychology academics, it turns out they had a couple of tricks up their sleeve to make sure their music was as accurate to the science as possible.

Akers' aunt is a professor at Tennessee Tech in the psychology department, he said.

"I would send her songs and be like, 'Does this feel more like depression or bargaining? To me, it was like depression.' And she would come back and be like, 'No, this, this is clearly you bargaining.'"

Akers would bounce ideas off of his own therapist as well. Akers and Macdonald, too, would consult their therapist mothers in the writing process. In total, the band consulted at least four psychology professionals in the crafting of the album.

"We definitely feel more acquainted with the process of grief and what the science is behind it," Macdonald said. "But also, this is just our experience, and we're not experts. It's just our interpretation of it."

The album is structured so that each stage of grief gets its own shortened song, sometimes instrumental or overlaid with commentary. In between each stage are a handful of songs in each category.

Runaways from the album include "Son of a Gun," featuring K. Flay, a pulsing track with heavy percussive elements and appropriately angry lyrics — yes, it appears in the anger stage of grief.

The lyrics go: "Misfit songs in a beat up truck / I got 24 ways of not giving a single / Just got to take it and run / The bad guys win and the good die young / I got 24 ways of making my own luck."

"Self-Inflicted Wounds" from the depression stage is one of the album's most vulnerable tracks. With a palpable sorrow, Akers sings: "And it was easy for me to blame it all on you / Never looking in the mirror cause I couldn't take the truth / If hurt people hurt people I didn't mean to."

"Leave It Better than You Found It," featuring Nashville artist Ruston Kelly, comes in the acceptance stage. The song dropped as a single in December.

They sing: "And I guess that I hope, when it's my time to go / That they say I was alive, and I tried to be kind / And at times at bars with karaoke, I fully ascend / That I left this place better, than I found it."

The 19-track album brings listeners through a personal, yet universal, metamorphosis.

"I pray that it can be healing for people, too, that are walking through life with unprocessed grief," Akers said.

The sound features synths, catchy mandolin licks and powerful vocals that act as a vector for "The Process," a through-between that elevates it beyond a typical indie-alternative pop album.

'American Idol' Top 10 finalist Kayko credits South Florida musical roots for newfound stardom

Sam "Kayko" Kelly-Cohen’s journey t o the Top 10 on “American Idol” didn’t just begin on that fateful day in the audition room when the judges asked him to sing on a whim.

It dates much further back to his South Florida childhood. Before the age of 10, he began sowing the musical seeds that are blossoming into a fruitful career. 

Kelly-Cohen grew up performing in venues from West Palm Beach to Miami. He was very involved in Florida Children’s Theatre and North Broward Preparatory School productions in Davie and Coconut Creek, respectively. 

After graduating from high school, he left Florida at 18 to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he studied songwriting for three years. The Fort Lauderdale native couldn’t handle frigid Boston winters and left without graduating to enroll in the “school of hard knocks” in Nashville, where he currently lives. 

“I wanted to make my own mistakes and now I’m paying my bills songwriting and producing,” he said. “I’m currently up to 494 songs. I had a mentor tell me one time that 500 is the number of songs that you need to get to in order to really be a songwriter.” 

However, Kelly-Cohen's dad calls Delray Beach home, so you just might see him on Atlantic Avenue when he visits his Pops. The singer has a running joke, however, that “Idol” host Ryan Seacrest is his father. 

“You give the internet an inch and they will just run with it. I think I look a little bit like Ryan Seacrest, so I said on one post one time that, ‘Oh, Ryan, you’re my dad,’” he explained. “People commented that they thought that was funny, so I kept upping the ante. It got the attention of Ryan himself because for the Top 14, he said, ‘Son, you’re in the Top 14.’ It was cool to be in the Top 14, but to be Ryan’s son is cooler for sure.”

Kelly-Cohen's mother died in 2019 and he said music was therapy as he grieved. On his  Instagram page , he shared a video of his mother, saying, "Two years ago, my mom passed away. My grieving process is ongoing. But writing this song has helped heal me so much, and all I can hope is that if you’re missing someone that’s no longer in your life, this song can hopefully help you too."

Performing his original pieces on 'American Idol' has made Kayko unique

Until last week’s “Idol” episodes, Kelly-Cohen only performed original pieces while playing piano or guitar. For these final rounds of competition, the show has assigned a different theme each episode and all contestants must sing covers that fit the theme.  

“One of my main goals when I signed up to actually be a part of the show was I never wanted to compromise my artistry,” he explained. “I never wanted to just sing a karaoke song, so for every cover that I’m doing on this show, I’m trying to be really intentional to make the arrangement very specific to my sound.” 

While living in Boston, Kelly-Cohen worked at the dueling piano bar Howl At the Moon, which is expected to open a new location in Fort Lauderdale in October. This experience equipped him with a large arsenal of songs. He’s like a human jukebox, which will likely serve him well moving forward on “Idol.” 

Last Sunday, Kelly-Cohen did his own rendition of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Radiohead’s “High and Dry” and was the final singer to be saved from elimination. 

“I was pooping my pants. I was like, ‘My time is up. All these cool arrangements that I have for weeks in advance I will never get to do,’” he recalled. “Jordan [Anthony] and Nya are incredible. They’re probably better vocalists than me, but America voted me on, so I’ll try to do them proud and keep all the good times rolling.” 

The following night, he ditched the guitar and jammed out with an energetic performance of Gotye's Billboard No. 1 hit "Somebody That I Used To Know.” “I kind of just jumped around and had a mosh pit party with Katy [Perry], Lionel [Richie], and Luke [Bryan], so I wouldn’t mind doing that again,” he said. 

Before the end of the season, he hopes to showcase his drum and bass skills on the show.

Kayko promises his Sunday 'American Idol' song will be fun

Born in Plantation, in 2000, Kelly-Cohen will sing a song that was released in his birth year on Sunday's “Idol” episode. Shania Twain will mentor the contestants and eight will move on. He isn’t permitted to reveal the songs he’ll sing this week, but he did drop some hints. 

“The Sunday song I chose because it’s fun. I feel like I had so much fun with my ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ performance, I really wanted to hit replay,” he said. “I want to jump around and be crazy again.” 

Hit songs that made Billboard’s Top 100 chart in 2000 that fit that description are Destiny’s Child’s “Jumpin’ Jumpin’” and N*SYNC’s “Bye, Bye, Bye” and “It’s Gonna Be Me.” The episode airs live Sunday, only two days before the annual Justin Timberlake “It’s Gonna Be May” memes are plastered all over social media. Other high-energy songs from 2000 are Sisqo’s “Thong Song” and Eiffel 65’s “Blue (Da Ba Dee).” 

On Monday’s episode, each contestant will be given three songs to select from — each song was handpicked by one of the three celebrity judges. The songs were specially selected with each contestant’s voice, style, and personality in mind. The contestant won’t know ahead of time which judge picked which song for them. But, the judge whose selections get sung by the most contestants will get to save one singer, so seven will move forward to next week. 

“I chose the Monday song because I used to sing it a lot in high school, and it takes me back to that time where I was super in the theater world and remembering that golden age of senior year of high school,” the 2018 North Broward Prep graduate said.

Kayko's vocal tone gives off Ben Platt vibes

Kelly-Cohen’s vocal tone and ability to tell stories about his personal experiences through lyrics gives off Ben Platt vibes. Platt played the lead role in “Dear Evan Hansen” on Broadway and in the film adaptation. The musical revolves around a shy, depressed, and anxious high schooler who feels invisible at school and embarks on a journey of self-discovery through a series of letters he writes.  

“I have actually gotten that comment more than anybody else in the world. Maybe I gotta do one of his songs on the show,” he hinted. 

Perhaps Monday will be the night this will happen. Kelly-Cohen’s original song “What If?” about the imposter syndrome he felt following his audition and becoming the “accidental” idol is reminiscent of “Dear Evan Hansen”’s track “You Will Be Found.” 

Following “Idol,” Kelly-Cohen isn’t opposed to returning to his theater roots. He would be far from the first “Idol” finalist to do so. He’d follow in the footsteps of the likes of Jennifer Hudson, Justin Guarini, Fantasia Barrino, Clay Aiken, Jordin Sparks, Constantine Maroulis, and Nick Fradiani, to name a few. 

“I would love to do Broadway. That would be a crazy full circle [moment] from my little kid days making my friends and family do little productions of my favorite shows,” he said. “That would be crazy if I could actually use this to launch into Broadway.”

If Kelly-Cohen goes on to win “Idol,” he has his best friend Abby Blake to thank. He originally went to the show’s Nashville audition as Blake’s pianist. After she sang, the judges prompted him to sing and gave them both golden tickets to Hollywood. Blake has since been eliminated, but continues to cheer her bestie on from home. 

“She’s tuning in every week. She’s supportive,” he said. “She’s the only reason that I’m here. Obviously, I owe it all to her.”

What to watch on 'Idol' Top 10 performances this weekend

Clocking in at three minutes, the breezy vignette sees Gosling cruising around what appears to be a movie backlot alongside badass stunt professionals Logan Holladay (recent breaker of a world record ), Ben Jenkin, and Troy Brown. Of course, they're all sporting matching Fall Guy jackets and the same type of scruffy beard Gosling showcases in the film.

What is The Fall Guy About?

Loosely adapted from the TV series of the same name that ran from 1981 to 1986, The Fall Guy centers around veteran stuntman Colt Seavers (Gosling), who decides to get out of the Hollywood rat race after an on-set accident nearly ends his career. He's brought back into the filmmaking fold by his ex-girlfriend, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), a director trying to keep her latest multi-million dollar production together when her leading man, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), mysteriously vanishes. Colt agrees to find the missing A-lister, totally unaware that accepting the job means wading into a dangerous criminal conspiracy.

Winston Duke (stunt coordinator Dan Tucker), Hannah Waddingham (producer Gail Meyer), and Stephanie Hsu (Tom Ryder's assistant, Alma Milan) round out the main cast. Lee Majors, who played Seavers on the small screen, is confirmed to make a cameo appearance, though we don't have any specific intel on his character at the moment.

Drew Pearce — who previously worked with director David Leitch on  Fast & Furious Presents:  Hobbs & Shaw  — wrote the screenplay and is an executive producer with Geoff Shaevitz and the late Glen A. Larson (creator of the original show). Leitch and his wife, Kelly McCormick, produced the film under their 87North banner. Gosling and Guymon Casady are also producers.
