However, these older companies that have used clubs that are for sale can still be a good fit for your game.

As we have mentioned, it is important to remember that this was a value brand that you mostly saw sold at Walmart and Kmart.

Although Walmart will sometimes carry better name brand choices of golf clubs and golf accessories, these stores are where people look for the lower-priced golf equipment.

With the internet becoming the preferred place to shop for golf equipment, perhaps Knight Golf did not have a strong enough presence for golfers.

Knight Golf went out of business many years ago, and the brand and all of its manufacturing stopped.

Sometimes when a golf brand goes out of business, there are parts of it that stay active on the market.

Unfortunately, with Knight, there were just not enough sales to keep it open.

Of course, some people did feel this impact as they truly enjoyed their Knight golf clubs.

However, for the most part, the beginners who started with Knight and enjoyed the game moved on to a better golf club manufacturer for their next set.

Typically speaking, a beginner set will last for two or three years, and then players will be ready to upgrade to something a bit better.

The Knight’s tour problem

Backtracking is an algorithmic paradigm that tries different solutions until finds a solution that “works”. Problems that are typically solved using the backtracking technique have the following property in common. These problems can only be solved by trying every possible configuration and each configuration is tried only once. A Naive solution for these problems is to try all configurations and output a configuration that follows given problem constraints. Backtracking works incrementally and is an optimization over the Naive solution where all possible configurations are generated and tried. For example, consider the following Knight’s Tour problem. 

Problem Statement: Given a N*N board with the Knight placed on the first block of an empty board. Moving according to the rules of chess knight must visit each square exactly once. Print the order of each cell in which they are visited.

The path followed by Knight to cover all the cells Following is a chessboard with 8 x 8 cells. Numbers in cells indicate the move number of Knight.

Let us first discuss the Naive algorithm for this problem and then the Backtracking algorithm.

Naive Algorithm for Knight’s tour   The Naive Algorithm is to generate all tours one by one and check if the generated tour satisfies the constraints. 

Backtracking works in an incremental way to attack problems. Typically, we start from an empty solution vector and one by one add items (Meaning of item varies from problem to problem. In the context of Knight’s tour problem, an item is a Knight’s move). When we add an item, we check if adding the current item violates the problem constraint, if it does then we remove the item and try other alternatives. If none of the alternatives works out then we go to the previous stage and remove the item added in the previous stage. If we reach the initial stage back then we say that no solution exists. If adding an item doesn’t violate constraints then we recursively add items one by one. If the solution vector becomes complete then we print the solution.

Backtracking Algorithm for Knight’s tour  

Following is the Backtracking algorithm for Knight’s tour problem. 

Following are implementations for Knight’s tour problem. It prints one of the possible solutions in 2D matrix form. Basically, the output is a 2D 8*8 matrix with numbers from 0 to 63 and these numbers show steps made by Knight.   

Time Complexity :  There are N 2 Cells and for each, we have a maximum of 8 possible moves to choose from, so the worst running time is O(8 N^2 ).

Auxiliary Space: O(N 2 )

Important Note: No order of the xMove, yMove is wrong, but they will affect the running time of the algorithm drastically. For example, think of the case where the 8th choice of the move is the correct one, and before that our code ran 7 different wrong paths. It’s always a good idea a have a heuristic than to try backtracking randomly. Like, in this case, we know the next step would probably be in the south or east direction, then checking the paths which lead their first is a better strategy.

A knight's tour is a sequence of moves of a knight on a chessboard such that the knight visits every square only once. If the knight ends on a square that is one knight's move from the beginning square (so that it could tour the board again immediately, following the same path), the tour is closed , otherwise it is open .

Variations of the knight's tour problem involve chessboards of different sizes than the usual 8 x 8, as well as irregular (non-rectangular) boards.

For example, the first line can be read from left to right or by moving from the first square to second line, third syllable (2.3) and then to 1.5 to 2.7 to 4.8 to 3.6 to 4.4 to 3.2.

One of the first mathematicians to investigate the knight's tour was Leonhard Euler. The first procedure for completing the Knight's Tour was Warnsdorf's rule, first described in 1823 by H. C. von Warnsdorf.

In the 20th century, the Oulipo group of writers used it among many others. The most notable example is the 10 x 10 Knight's Tour which sets the order of the chapters in Georges Perec's novel Life: A User's Manual . The sixth game of the 2010 World Chess Championship between Viswanathan Anand and Veselin Topalov saw Anand making 13 consecutive knight moves (albeit using both knights); online commentors jested that Anand was trying to solve the Knight's Tour problem during the game.

Schwenk proved that for any m x n board with m ≤ n , a closed knight's tour is always possible unless one or more of these three conditions are met:

  • m and n are both odd
  • m = 1, 2, or 4
  • m = 3 and n = 4, 6, or 8.

Cull et al. and Conrad et al. proved that on any rectangular board whose smaller dimension is at least 5, there is a (possibly open) knight's tour.

Number of tours

On an 8 x 8 board, there are exactly 26,534,728,821,064 directed closed tours (i.e. two tours along the same path that travel in opposite directions are counted separately, as are rotations and reflections). The number of undirected closed tours is half this number, since every tour can be traced in reverse. There are 9,862 undirected closed tours on a 6 x 6 board.

Finding tours with computers

There are quite a number of ways to find a knight's tour on a given board with a computer. Some of these methods are algorithms while others are heuristics.

Brute force algorithms

A brute-force search for a knight's tour is impractical on all but the smallest boards; for example, on an 8x8 board there are approximately 4x10 51 possible move sequences, and it is well beyond the capacity of modern computers (or networks of computers) to perform operations on such a large set. However the size of this number gives a misleading impression of the difficulty of the problem, which can be solved "by using human insight and ingenuity ... without much difficulty."

Divide and conquer algorithms

By dividing the board into smaller pieces, constructing tours on each piece, and patching the pieces together, one can construct tours on most rectangular boards in polynomial time.

The Knight's Tour problem also lends itself to being solved by a neural network implementation. The network is set up such that every legal knight's move is represented by a neuron, and each neuron is initialized randomly to be either "active" or "inactive" (output of 1 or 0), with 1 implying that the neuron is part of the final solution. Each neuron also has a state function (described below) which is initialized to 0.

When the network is allowed to run, each neuron can change its state and output based on the states and outputs of its neighbors (those exactly one knight's move away) according to the following transition rules:

Warnsdorff's rule is a heuristic for finding a knight's tour. We move the knight so that we always proceed to the square from which the knight will have the fewest onward moves. When calculating the number of onward moves for each candidate square, we do not count moves that revisit any square already visited. It is, of course, possible to have two or more choices for which the number of onward moves is equal; there are various methods for breaking such ties, including one devised by Pohl and another by Squirrel and Cull.

This rule may also more generally be applied to any graph. In graph-theoretic terms, each move is made to the adjacent vertex with the least degree. Although the Hamiltonian path problem is NP-hard in general, on many graphs that occur in practice this heuristic is able to successfully locate a solution in linear time. The knight's tour is a special case.

The heuristic was first described in "Des Rösselsprungs einfachste und allgemeinste Lösung" by H. C. von Warnsdorff in 1823. A computer program that finds a Knight's Tour for any starting position using Warnsdorff's rule can be found in the book 'Century/Acorn User Book of Computer Puzzles' edited by Simon Dally (ISBN 071260541X).

In the original series' history, K.I.T.T. was conceived and designed by the late Wilton Knight , a brilliant but eccentric billionaire and the founder of the " Foundation for Law and Government ", (commonly shortened to "FLAG") and its parent Knight Industries .

K.I.T.T.'s main cybernetic processor was first installed in a mainframe computer used by the United States government in Washington D.C. However, Wilton saw better use for "him" in the Foundation's crime-fighting crusade and eventually the system was installed in the vehicle. K.I.T.T. was in fact the second vehicle built by Knight Industries with an artificial intelligence. His predecessor was K.A.R.R. , the Knight Automated Roving Robot . K.A.R.R. was programmed for self-preservation, but this proved to be dangerous to the Foundation's interests. K.A.R.R. was later deactivated and placed in storage while K.I.T.T. was given to his new operator Michael Knight (the new identity of Michael Long).

Unlike K.A.R.R., K.I.T.T. is programmed primarily to protect Michael and all human life at all costs. This is made clear in the pilot episode when Michael asks Devon Miles if K.I.T.T. will protect anyone driving it. Devon's answer is that K.I.T.T.'s primary function is the preservation of human life, and Michael's in particular.

After Michael left FLAG [ ]

K.I.T.T.'s main CPU unit had apparently been housed inside Sky One without anyone's knowledge, most likely placed there by Michael or Devon. He then began posing as a mysterious man named Shadow trying to help the Team Knight Rider. K.I.T.T. (as Shadow) calls for a secret meeting with Team Knight Rider in an abandoned office building. Although they are suspicious, Kyle and Jenny go to meet Shadow while the rest of the team waits outside. Shadow tells Kyle and Jenny everything that Mobius has done to them has been related and Mobius has been trying to get to him. As Shadow is about to reveal Mobius' next target, the building starts to explode. Kyle and Jenny narrowly escape, leaving Shadow trapped behind. Later On Sky One, Mobius activates a working mind control device and rolls unnoticed past Gil the mechanic. He enters the situation room, where Shadow is waiting for him. Shadow tells Mobius that it was only a matter a time before Mobius figured out who he was. Mobius says that he's taking Shadow with him. A sphere-shaped electronic casing labeled "K.I.T.T." rises from the center console and Mobius removes it. As soon as he does, the holographic image of Shadow disappears. Mobius leaves just as the team arrives. They discover a message: longitude and latitude coordinates.

The team goes to the location and finds a tombstone marked "Michael Knight R.I.P. One man who made a difference". A man appears and tells them "I'm Michael Knight. Or at least I was."

By the time of the events of Knight Rider 2000 , K.I.T.T.'s AI is back in the hands of FLAG but the Knight 2000 has been dismantled and parts sold off to medical research companies. His AI system was recovered by Michael and was installed in the dashboard of his 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air. K.I.T.T.'s AI was later transferred by Michael into the Knight 4000 and promptly served FLAG as the K.I.T.T.'s replacement.

Friends [ ]

KITT is the only car to date who has shown human emotion. His friends are Michael Knight , Bonnie Barstow , Devon Miles , April Curtis & RC3 . His loyalties to Michael are strong, he would rather be with Michael than the Foundation, given the choice, and will do anything to keep Michael alive, like risking his own.

K.I.T.T.'s Features [ ]

K.I.T.T. is loaded with special features, most of which could be activated by buttons on panels to either side of the steering wheel or on a console on the ceiling of the interior. The button function layout was not consistent; some features were used once and never seen again.

Some of KITT's features include the following:

  • He could provide music, video and video games via an in-dash entertainment system.
  • Molecular Bonded Shell - K.I.T.T. is armored with " Tri-Helical Plasteel 1000 MBS ", or  Molecular Bonded Shell  plating which protects him from almost all forms of conventional firearms and explosive devices. They can only be harmed by heavy artillery and rockets, and even then the blast usually leaves most of the car's shell intact and only damages internal components. The shell protects every part of the car including the tires. As a result, K.I.T.T. could act as a shield for explosives by driving over bombs and suppressing the blast. A laser is also capable of damaging the alloy, however the shell can only withstand a maximum of 2 shots before being neutralized. The shell also protects against fire and electricity; it is vulnerable to some potent acids and at least one formula was made to completely neutralize the shell. Long exposure to seawater can weaken the shell.

The shell provides a frame tolerance of 220,462 lb (100 tons) and a front and rear axle suspension load of 55,116 lb (25 tons).

The shell is actually a combination of three secret substances referred together as the " Knight Compound ". It was developed by Wilton who entrusted parts of the formula to three separate people. Each individual knows only two pieces of the formula, ensuring that any two of them could make more of the Knight Compound in an emergency situation and that no one person would be able to make it.

  • Pyroclastic Lamination - K.I.T.T. is protected by thermal-resistant coating that can withstand sustained temperatures of up to 800 degrees Fahrenheit. First used in Episode 32, "Ring of Fire".
  • Power System - K.I.T.T. is powered by the Knight Industries turbojet with modified afterburners and a computer-controlled 8-speed turbodrive transmission. Specifications: 0–60 mph in 2 seconds, standing to quarter mile 4.4 seconds. Electromagnetic hyper-vacuum disc brakes: 12 foot braking distance 60–0 mph.
  • It could be used to provide power for pushing or pulling heavy objects when necessary.
  • When used in combination with the Trajectory Guidance System and a pair of front-mounted rocket motors, the car could "jump" 40 feet into the air to avoid obstacles.
  • Voice Synthesizer - K.I.T.T.'s Voice synthesizer allows K.I.T.T. as well as other similar vehichles logic modules to speak and communicate. Other sounds, such as a police raid to fool criminals or a wild animal's growl, could also be simulated. The Voice Synthesizer "speaks" through the Voice Modulator in the interior of the vehicle. K.I.T.T.'s primary spoken language was English, however by accessing his language module, he could speak fluently in Spanish and French. The module could also be adjusted to give K.I.T.T. different accents; for example, in Episode 413: Out of the Woods, K.I.T.T. uses a "New York City" accent and calls Michael, "Micky".
  • Electronic Jamming System - K.I.T.T. has an  Electronic Jamming System  which consists of three main components: the Electromagnetic Field Generator, Electronic Field Disrupter and the Microwave Ignition Sensor. The system can take control of electronic machines, allowing such diverse activites as cheating at slot machines, breaking electronic locks, scrambling security cameras, and withdrawing money from ATMs. The system was used most frequently to disable the engine and activate the brakes on a fleeing vehicle. In some episodes, K.I.T.T. used the system to magnetize and manipulate non-electronic objects such as a mechanical combination lock, and to create "poltergeist" activity, moving random objects to frighten people.
  • Anamorphic Equalizer - The equalizer device is a fiber-optic array of electronic "eyes". The scanner could see in all visual wavelengths as well as x-ray and infrared. When K.I.T.T.'s surveillance mode was active the bar would light up and make an ominous swooping sound as it panned left and right. Occasionally the bar pulsed in different patterns and swept either rapidly or very slowly. It is possible to disable K.I.T.T.'s electronics by penetrating the equalizer with a laser making this one of his few vulnerabilities.
  • Etymotic Equalizer - This system allowed K.I.T.T. to hear sounds. An array of audio sensors were threaded throughout his interior and exterior.
  • Olfactory Sensor - K.I.T.T. could "smell" via an atmospheric sampling device mounted in his front bumper.
  • Microscanners - Microscanners are tiny audio and visual sensors embedded into the grooves of K.I.T.T.'s body. They allow for visual tracking and display of anything around the car.
  • Normal Cruise - On "Normal", Michael had control of the car. In an emergency, K.I.T.T. could still take over and activate Auto Cruise mode. In order to prevent this, one has to use the Manual Override. In the show's fourth season, the word "Cruise" was dropped and indicated simply by the word "Normal".
  • Auto Cruise - In "Auto", K.I.T.T. could drive himself utilizing an advanced Auto Collision Avoidance System.
  • Pursuit - "Pursuit" is used during high-speed driving and is a combination of manual and computer assisted operation. K.I.T.T. could respond to road conditions faster than Michael's reflexes could; however, Michael was technically in control of the vehicle and K.I.T.T. helped guide certain maneuvers.
  • Computer Override - K.I.T.T. has a hidden switch and setting dial under the dash that either completely shuts down his AI module or deactivates certain systems should the need arise. First used in Episode 17, "Chariot of Gold".
  • Manual Override - K.I.T.T. has a function which can be activated in order to completely lock the AI from all the vehicle controls. Unlike the Computer Override, Manual Override simply keeps K.I.T.T. from activating Auto Cruise or preventing anyone inside the car from doing something that would probably hurt them. K.I.T.T.'s AI is still able to protest such actions vocally. First used in Episode 8, "Trust Doesn't Rust".
  • Police Lights , Sirens - K.I.T.T.'s headlights can flash red and blue as police lights and he has a siren. First used in Episode 38, "Race for Life".
  • Silent Mode - K.I.T.T. could run silently. The feature dampened his engine noise and allow him to sneak around. First used in Episode 37, "White-Line Warriors".
  • Grappling Hook , Winch - K.I.T.T. has a hidden winch and grappling hook system, one mounted under his front bumper and another in a compartment behind his taillights. Most often the hook is connected by a strong cable, but a metal arm has also been seen. The grappling hook is first used in Episode 6, "Not a Drop to Drink"; the winch is first used in Episode 13, "Forget Me Not".
  • Parachute - K.I.T.T. is equipped with a parachute. First used in Episode 23, "Goliath Returns (Pt. 1)".
  • Oil Slick , Smoke Release - K.I.T.T. could spray an oil slick and a plume of smoke from under his rear bumper. First used in Episode 1, "Knight of the Phoenix".
  • Flame Thrower - K.I.T.T. has flamethrowers mounted under his bumpers. First used in Episode 2, "Deadly Maneuvers".
  • Tear Gas - K.I.T.T. can dispense a cloud of tear gas along with his smokescreen. First used in Episode 13, "Hearts of Stone".
  • Rocket Fire - K.I.T.T. can launch magnesium flares which can also be used to divert heat-seeking missiles fired at him. First used in Episode 26, "Merchants of Death".
  • High Traction Drop-Downs - When activated, the HTDD system hydraulically raises K.I.T.T.'s chassis for better traction when driving off-road. First used in Episode 39, "Speed Demons".
  • Traction Spikes - When activated K.I.T.T.'s tires would have spikes coming out in order for K.I.T.T. to drive up steep off-road hills. First used in Episode 86, "Hills of Fire".
  • Telephone Comlink - Michael could contact home base and communicate with Devon and others using K.I.T.T.'s video display.
  • K.I.T.T. could detect people and vehicles and track their movements and discern their proximity.
  • K.I.T.T. could gather structural schematics of buildings, vehicles or other devices and help Michael avoid potential danger when he was snooping around.
  • K.I.T.T. could also monitor radio transmissions and telephone communications within a location and trace those calls.
  • K.I.T.T. could tap into computer systems to monitor or upload and download information as long as he could break the access codes.
  • Infrared Tracking Scope - K.I.T.T. could monitor the position of specific vehicles in the area within 10 miles. For instance, if Michael wanted to know the location of every police vehicle within 5 miles, K.I.T.T. could display a schematic on his monitors of all police vehicles relative to his position.
  • Laser - K.I.T.T. can fire a high-powered ultra-frequency modulated laser capable of burning through steel plating. Like most of K.I.T.T.'s components, the schematics for the laser device are classified. First used in Episode 24, "Goliath (Pt. 2)".
  • Bomb Sniffer - K.I.T.T. is equipped with a bomb sniffer module that can detect explosives within a few yards of the vehicle. First used in Episode 25, "Brother's Keeper".
  • Medical Scanner - K.I.T.T. has a medical scanner that includes an electrocardiograph (ECG). The medical scanner can monitor the vital signs of individuals and display them on his monitors. It could indicate such conditions as if they were injured, poisoned, undergoing stress or other emotional behavior. K.I.T.T. could even monitor Michael's physical activity through sensors inside the driver seat. First used in Episode 1, "Knight of the Phoenix (Pt. 2)".
  • Deflatable Tires - K.I.T.T. could deflate and reinflate his tires. First used in Episode 4, "Slammin' Sammy's Stunt Show Spectacular".
  • Fuel Processor - K.I.T.T. was powered by a turbine engine primarily fueled by hydrogen gas. However, his complex fuel processor allows him to run on any combustible liquid, even regular gasoline. K.I.T.T.'s actual fuel requirements and efficiency ratings were classified, however in one episode, K.I.T.T. mentioned his fuel economy was at least 100 miles per gallon. However, when operating on fuels other than liquid hydrogen K.I.T.T.'s fuel efficiency and power output may be lowered.
  • Self-Tinting Windows - K.I.T.T.'s windows could darken to opacity for various situations. First used in Episode 14, "Give Me Liberty... or Give Me Death".
  • Voice Stress Analyzer - K.I.T.T. can process spoken voices and determine if someone may be lying. First used in Episode 26, "Merchants of Death".
  • Auto Doors , Sunroof , Trunk Lid - K.I.T.T. could automatically open and close his doors and T-tops. He could also lock his doors to prevent unauthorized entry into his driver compartment. He could also open his hood automatically.
  • Lic Plates - K.I.T.T. can rotate his "KNIGHT" license plate to reveal a fictitious one reading "KNI 667". Michael used this to evade police when an APB was placed on him. First used in Episode 25, "Brother's Keeper".
  • Seat Ejection System - K.I.T.T. had two front ejection seats, mostly used when Michael needed a boost to fire escapes or building roof tops. First used in Episode 1, "Knight of the Phoenix (Pt. 1)".
  • Passive Laser Restraint System - Added to K.I.T.T. in later seasons, the restraint system helped protect Michael and any passengers from the shock of sudden impacts and hard stopping, especially after Super Pursuit Mode. It is speculated that this is a primitive form of an inertial damping device. First used in Episode 47, "Knight of the Drones".
  • Video Display Monitors - K.I.T.T. had two Cathode ray tube video display monitors on his dash for various readouts. They are controlled by two systems, the Graphic Translator (which sketches likenesses from verbal input) and the Anamorphic Equalizer (which gathered visual information from K.I.T.T.'s front scan bar) and microscanners. K.I.T.T. only had one when his dash was redesigned for the show's third season.
  • Computer Printer - K.I.T.T. could print hard copies of data on a dashboard-mounted printer. First used in Episode 15, "The Topaz Connection".
  • Chemical Analyzer - K.I.T.T. has a retractable tray with anelectron scanner that could analyze the chemical properties of various materials. It could even scan fingerprints and read ballistic information off bullets and compare these with a police database. Aside from the scanning tray, the system could also analyze chemical information gathered from K.I.T.T.'s exterior sensors. First used in Episode 17, "Chariot of Gold".
  • CO2 - K.I.T.T. could put out small fires from a CO 2 sprayer in his bumpers.
  • Oxygen Vent - K.I.T.T. could release oxygen into his driver compartment and provide air to passengers if he was ever submerged in water or buried in earth. This is also used to overcome the effects of certain drugs. First used in Episode 4, "Slammin' Sammy's Stunt Show Spectacular".
  • Ski Mode - The Ski Mode setting allowed K.I.T.T. to "ski" (driving up on two wheels). First used in Episode 1, "Knight of the Phoenix".
  • Third Stage Aquatic Synthesizer - With this system, K.I.T.T. can hydroplane, effectively "driving" on water, using his wheels and turbo system for propulsion. First used in Episode 28, "Return to Cadiz".
  • Sub Zero - K.I.T.T. could release cryogenic gases and "flash freeze" the driver compartment. This was used once when a baby tiger managed to get inside to gnaw on his steering wheel and K.I.T.T. wanted him out. First used in Episode 66, "Knight in Retreat".
  • Sleep Gas - K.I.T.T. could spray a gas into the driver compartment that could render an unwanted occupant unconscious.
  • Air Vac - K.I.T.T. could expel all breathable air from the driver compartment, however, only K.A.R.R. ever threatened to use it to harm someone. K.I.T.T. used this to rid the compartment of smoke after bombs were detonated in his trunk.
  • Trajectory Guidance System - Allowed K.I.T.T. to calculate the perfect trajectory so that the car could Turbo Boost out in a stationary position or if it was trapped under something.
  • Super Pursuit Mode - K.I.T.T.'s SPM was added at the start of the fourth season. It was the result of a redesign of the car to integrate new concepts consisting of improved rocket boosters, retractable spoilers for aerodynamic stability and movable air inlets for increased cooling. Super Pursuit Mode provided a 40% boost in speed beyond the car's original top speed of 300 MPH. First used in Episode 70, "Knight of the Juggernaut".
  • Emergency Braking System - The EBS slowed K.I.T.T. down from Super Pursuit speeds. It consisted of a forward breaking booster and air panels that popped out to create air friction. First used in Episode 70, "Knight of the Juggernaut".
  • Convertible Roof - Added in the fourth season, by pressing the "C" button on K.I.T.T.'s dash Michael could bring the top down and K.I.T.T. became a convertible. First used in Episode #70, "Knight of the Juggernaut".

An unknown number of these systems were designed at Stanford University ( Episode 105: Just My Bill ). K.I.T.T.'s total production cost was estimated at $12,000,000 in 1982. (This was K.I.T.T.'s total construction cost as he was first built in 1982. This equals $25,440,000 in 2006 dollars. However, due to inflation and material costs $52,915,200 would be needed in 2006 to purchase the material used in 1982). The cost of subsequent equipment improvements and the installation of additional features since his activation have not been factored.

Other equipment [ ]

  • Comlink - K.I.T.T. is in constant contact with Michael via a two-way communication wristwatch (a modified '80s LCD AM radio watch) Michael wore. The watch also had a micro camera and scanner that K.I.T.T. could access to gather information.
  • Homing Device - In dire emergency, Michael can activate a secret homing beacon hidden inside a gold pendant he wears around his neck. The beacon sends a priority signal that can remotely activate K.I.T.T. and override his programming so that he rushes to Michael's aid. Only used in Episode 42, "A Good Knight's Work".
  • FLAG Mobile Unit (The Semi): K.I.T.T.'s moblie garage.

Appearance [ ]

K.I.T.T. was a black Trans Am with some custom body parts for the entirety to the series; however, he did undergo some cosmetic changes during the series. The nose of the car was different for the pilot episode and the remainder of the series. In season 4, K.I.T.T. could now engage his Super Pursuit Mode, Emergency Braking System and his Convertible Mode, all which altered his exterior appearance in some way. For the pilot episode and season one and two, K.I.T.T. had one dashboard style. When K.I.T.T. was rebuilt in the season three premier, and for the remainder of the series, K.I.T.T. was given an updated dashboard. In the year 2000 K.I.T.T.'s AI was put by Michael into his Blue 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air and later into the Knight 4000 a red 1991 Pontiac Banshee and so served FLAG as the new field unit.

Trivia/Notes [ ]

  • When asked about K.I.T.T.'s whereabouts, David Hasselhoff indicates that, like Roy Rogers' horse trigger K.I.T.T. is now stuffed and mounted in Hasselhoff's living room. In actual fact, one of the cars used became Hasselhoff's personal property at the end of production and was sold into a private collection in 1992. It can now be seen at the Cars of the Stars Motor Museum in Keswick, Cumbria, England. [1]
  • K.I.T.T. was designed by customizer Michael Scheffe. The convertible and super pursuit K.I.T.T. were designed and built by George Barris.
  • Hasselhoff and "K.I.T.T." appeared in an episode of Diff'rent Strokes , but Daniels did not provide the voice.
  • K.I.T.T. accompanied David Hasselhoff when he performed onstage, singing one of his songs at Disneyland back in 1985, with various Disney characters behind him as his band.
  • K.I.T.T. appeared in an AT&T television commercial with other robotic entertainment stars as Robby the Robot, WOPR and Rosie the Robot Maid.
  • K.I.T.T.'s scanner is similar to that of the Cylons from the science fiction series Battlestar Galactica . Glen A. Larson , the creator of both Knight Rider and Battlestar Galactica has stated that the two shows have nothing else in common and to remove any fan speculation, he stated in the Season One Knight Rider DVD audio-comments, that he simply reused the scanning light for K.I.T.T. because he liked the effect. Ironically, in an episode of the original incarnation of Battlestar Galactica , the character Starbuck pilots a new type of Viper that has an AI installed into it named CORA which was able to pilot the craft and verbally interact with a human pilot.
  • K.I.T.T. appeared on stage and sang a duet with Nick Lachey during the one hour special, The Nick and Jessica Variety Hour.
  • K.I.T.T. was reunited with David Hasselhoff in a season 1 episode of the variety show/talent show America's Got Talent , on which Hasselhoff was a judge. A performer brought a replica of K.I.T.T. onto center stage as scenery during her burlesque act. The following evening, Hasselhoff incorporated the K.I.T.T. replica into his musical performance of "Jump In My Car" on stage.
  • David Hasselhoff drives the only right hand drive K.I.T.T. replica built in his music video "Jump in My Car" because the video was shot in Sydney, Australia and the car came from Victoria, Australia. [1]
  • According to an appearance on MTV Cribs , Joey Fatone owns one of the actual K.I.T.T. cars used on the series.
  • In the Futurama episode "The Honking", the werecar Project Satan is said to be made of the parts of the most evil cars in the world, including K.I.T.T.'s windshield wipers.
  • Also in The Simpsons , K.I.T.T. was animated in the episode "The Wizard of Evergreen Terrace".
  • On April 4th, 2007, one of the four K.I.T.T. cars used in production of the television series was put up for sale for $149,995 by Johnny Verhoek of Kassabian Motors, Dublin, California. [2] [3]
  • David Hasselhoff appeared in an episode of the claymation series Celebrity Deathmatch , fighting on a Baywatch style ring. After David was heavily injured by John Tesh, K.I.T.T. jumped on Tesh, crushing him. K.I.T.T.'s body was a Dune Buggy.
  • K.I.T.T. also appeared as a cameo in the Disney movie 'Herbie: Fully Loaded'.
  • K.I.T.T Scanner and A.I appears in Ready Player One , both the movie and the book. K.I.T.T Scanner and A.I was used on Parzival's DeLorean Time Machine from Back To The Future .

Knight's tour

Task

Problem : you have a standard 8x8 chessboard, empty but for a single knight on some square. Your task is to emit a series of legal knight moves that result in the knight visiting every square on the chessboard exactly once. Note that it is not a requirement that the tour be "closed"; that is, the knight need not end within a single move of its start position.

Input and output may be textual or graphical, according to the conventions of the programming environment. If textual, squares should be indicated in algebraic notation . The output should indicate the order in which the knight visits the squares, starting with the initial position. The form of the output may be a diagram of the board with the squares numbered according to visitation sequence, or a textual list of algebraic coordinates in order, or even an actual animation of the knight moving around the chessboard.

First, we specify a naive implementation the package Knights_Tour with naive backtracking. It is a bit more general than required for this task, by providing a mechanism not to visit certain coordinates. This mechanism is actually useful for the task Solve a Holy Knight's tour#Ada , which also uses the package Knights_Tour.

For larger sizes we'll use Warnsdorff's heuristic (without any thoughtful tie breaking). We enhance the specification adding a function Warnsdorff_Get_Tour. This enhancement of the package Knights_Tour will also be used for the task Solve a Holy Knight's tour#Ada . The specification of Warnsdorff_Get_Tour is the following.

ANSI BASIC does not allow function parameters to be passed by reference, so X and Y were made global variables.

The following draws on console the progress of the horsie. Specify board size on commandline, or use default 8.

Uses Warnsdorff's rule and (iterative) backtracking if that fails.

  • Common Lisp

This interactive program will ask for a starting case in algebraic notation and, also, whether a closed tour is desired. Each next move is selected according to Warnsdorff's rule; ties are broken at random.

The closed tour algorithm is quite crude: just find tours over and over until one happens to be closed by chance.

This code is quite verbose: I tried to make it easy for myself and for others to follow and understand. I'm not a Lisp expert, so I probably missed some idiomatic shortcuts I could have used to make it shorter.

For some reason, the interactive part does not work with SBCL, but it works fine with CLISP.

Using warnsdorff's rule

This algorithm finds 100,000 distinct solutions to the 8x8 problem in about 30 seconds. It precomputes knight moves up front, so it turns into a pure graph traversal problem. The program uses iteration and backtracking to find solutions.

Brute force method. Takes a long time for most solutions, so some optimization should be used. However, it has nice graphics.

The algorithm uses iterative backtracking and Warnsdorff's heuristic. It can output closed or non-closed tours.

64 shades of gray. We plot the move sequence in shades of gray, from black to white. The starting square is red. The ending square is green. One can observe that the squares near the border are played first (dark squares).

Fōrmulæ programs are not textual, visualization/edition of programs is done showing/manipulating structures but not text. Moreover, there can be multiple visual representations of the same program. Even though it is possible to have textual representation —i.e. XML, JSON— they are intended for storage and transfer purposes more than visualization and edition.

Programs in Fōrmulæ are created/edited online in its website .

In this page you can see and run the program(s) related to this task and their results. You can also change either the programs or the parameters they are called with, for experimentation, but remember that these programs were created with the main purpose of showing a clear solution of the task, and they generally lack any kind of validation.

Warnsdorf's rule

This implements Warnsdorff's algorithm using unordered sets.

  • The board must be square (it has only been tested on 8x8 and 7x7). Currently the maximum size board (due to square notation) is 26x26.
  • Tie breaking is selectable with 3 variants supplied (first in list, random, and Roth's distance heuristic).
  • A debug log can be generated showing the moves and choices considered for tie breaking.

The algorithm doesn't always generate a complete tour.

The following can be used when debugging to validate the board structure and to image the available moves on the board.

Warnsdorff’s rule, with random tie-breaks. The program keeps trying until it finds a solution. Running time can vary a lot.

Beware the program writes to a file ‘__random_number__’ in the working directory. (This can be avoided in GNU m4 by using ‘esyscmd’ instead of ‘syscmd’. I do not know how to avoid it in general.)

Mathematica / Wolfram Language

vertexLabels replaces the default vertex (i.e. square) names of the chessboard with the standard algebraic names "a1", "a2",...,"h8".

knightsGraph creates a graph of the solution space.

Find a Hamiltonian cycle (a path that visits each square exactly one time.)

Find the end square:

Find shortest path from the start square to the end square.

While a little slower than using Warnsdorff this solution is interesting:

1. It shows that Hidato and Knights Tour are essentially the same problem.

2. It is possible to specify which square is used for any Knights Move.

This is a translation of the C++ and D versions with some changes, the most important being the addition of a check to detect that there is no solution. Without this check, the program crashes with an IndexError as Nim in debug and in release modes generates code to insure that indexes are valid.

We have added a case to test the absence of solution. Note that, in this case, there is a lot of backtracking which considerably slows down the execution.

This is pretty fast (<<1s) up to size 48, before some sizes start to take quite some time to complete. It will even solve a 200x200 in 0.67s

You probably shouldn't send this to a printer. Solution using Warnsdorffs algorithm.

The 200x200 example warmed my study in its computation but did return a tour.

P.S. There is a slight deviation to a strict interpretation of Warnsdorff's algorithm in that as a convenience, tuples of the length of the knight moves followed by the position are minimized so knights moves with the same length will try and break the ties based on their minimum x,y position. In practice, it seems to give comparable results to the original algorithm.
