Koningsdam Sets Sail on 35-Night Cruise to Hawaii and South Pacific

  • February 18, 2023

Koningsdam

Holland America Line’s Koningsdam is in San Diego today to kick off a 35-night cruise to Hawaii, Tahiti and the Marquesas.

Sailing roundtrip from the California port, the unique cruise features visits to a total of ten destinations across the Pacific Ocean.

The first leg of the itinerary includes five days at sea, as well as calls to four ports in Hawaii: Kailua Kona, Lahaina, Nawiliwili and Honolulu – where the Koninsgdam is set to spend two days docked.

Continuing on its way to the South Pacific, the 2016-built cruise ship visits Fanning Islands before arriving in the French Polynesia.

The voyage includes an entire week of exploration in the archipelago, with overnight visits to Raiatea, Papeete and Moorea.

Before starting its return to North America, the Koningsdam will also visit two additional destinations in the region, Fakavara and Nuku Hiva.

On its way back to San Diego, the 2,650-guest ship is set to spend nine days at sea, arriving again at its homeport on March 25.

Also taking place onboard the Koningsdam, the 35-night voyage to Hawaii, Tahiti and the Marquesas is set to be repeated in February 2024.

The first vessel in Holland America’s Pinnacle class, the Koningsdam entered service in 2016, debuting a new design approach for the company and several new features.

According to the premium brand, the 99,500-ton ship was conceived to blend a fresh, contemporary styling with classic elegance.

One of the spaces that went through a transformation is the Queen’s Lounge, which, on the ship, became a theater and entertainment venue that spans two floors.

The Koningsdam also debuted new dining and eatery concepts, including the Grand Dutch Café, a nod to Holland America Line’s heritage, and a place to grab Dutch-themed snacks and beverages.

Returning favorites onboard the ship include several of the company’s signature venues, such as the Crow’s Nest lounge, the Ocean Bar and the Pinnacle Grill steakhouse.

Anyone lucky enough to be going to Honolulu doesn't have to give a reason for going. They can just say, "We're going to Honolulu," and imagination will take care of the rest. Moreover, Honolulu can probably live up to and even surpass whatever we imagine. World-famous beaches and tropical weather set the scene for an amazing mix of Pacific cultures in this Hawaiian capital. There is a reason why Hawaii is consistently rated as one of the nation's top travel destinations; in fact, there are several of them. Waikiki Beach is the center of activity for Hawaii's biggest industry: tourism. This is one of the world's greatest resort playgrounds, featuring some of the most beautiful beaches and hotels in the world. Visitors from all over the world flock here to enjoy the sun, the sand and the incredible nightlife. Besides the beaches, visitors to Honolulu can take tours of the countryside surrounding the downtown area. These tours are amazing, bringing visitors to some of the most beautiful rainforests and volcanoes in the world. Animal and plant life are abundant, and the scenery is unsurpassed. A five-minute car ride from Honolulu brings visitors into some of Nature's most beautiful and awe-inspiring sights. Several museums, including the Bishop Museum, combine exhibits on Hawaiian natural history with lessons about history and culture of its many diverse peoples. The Waikiki Aquarium is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States, and it features many of Hawaii's most interesting sea animals. The Honolulu Zoo also features some of the unique mammals, birds, and reptiles that inhabit the forests just outside of the city. The history of Hawaii is very rich, as the islands have always attracted many different people. Visitors can tour the Iolani Palace, the residence of the last of the Hawaiian monarchs. They can also visit Honolulu's Chinatown, which is more authentic than many of its mainland counterparts. They can also visit the Arizona Memorial, commemorating the destruction of the battleship Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that brought America into World War II. Honolulu exhibits the best of Hawaii in every way. From its famous beaches to its incredible natural preserves, this town has attracted millions of people from around the world. Many of those visitors stayed, helping to make Hawaii one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse places to visit in the United States. Anyone lucky enough to be going to Hawaii knows that he won't be disappointed.

Nawiliwili is located on the southeastern coast of the island of Kauai between Lihue and Nawiliwili Bay along Highway 51 near Ninini Point and the Huleia Stream.Kaua'i is divided into five major districts, or moku 'aina. Nawiliwili Bay is located in the moku 'aina of Puna on the southeastern coast. One meaning of puna is spring, and Puna has an abundance of springs and streams caused by its location on the windward side of the island. Around 1000 A.D., settlers from the Marquesas arrived, led by Punanuikaia'aina. He succeeded in creating a chiefdom independent of Kona in Puna.

Kailua-Kona

Kailua-Kona is a town on the west coast of Hawaii Island (the Big Island). Hulihee Palace is a former royal vacation home dating from 1838. Mokuaikaua Church, from the 1800s, is Hawaii’s oldest Christian church. On Kailua Bay, reconstructed thatched houses at Kamakahonu National Historic Landmark mark King Kamehameha I’s residence. Colorful coral lies off Kamakahonu Beach. Kailua Pier has boat moorings.

koningsdam cruise to hawaii

The Polynesians arrived in the Hilo area about 1100 A.C. They eventually inhabited the shores of Hilo Bay, farmed their crops, fished and traded their goods along the Wailuku River.  In the late 1700’s, the days of King Kamehameha’s rule, Hilo was the center of political activity and social growth. It was the prime place for the King to build his army of ships designed for conquering the Hawaiian Islands. By 1791 native Hawaiians had traveled as far as the United States and China. The King befriended many of the foreigners who traveled to the islands. With such considerable traveling, the Hawaiian way of life soon became influenced by products ranging from iron to livestock to non-native seeds.    Hilo became a stopping place for explorers, whaling ships, traders and those curious about active volcanoes. By the 1900’s, Hilo had grown into a commercial center. The sugar industry was booming, a number of wharves had been constructed, the breakwater was begun and a new railroad connected Hilo with other parts of the island. Then in 1946 – and again in 1960 – two destructive tsunamis swept Hilo’s Bayfront causing the relocation of Hilo’s government and commercial life. When the town was rebuilt, a large park and roadway were situated between the buildings and the shoreline to absorb future tidal waves.   Besides being a rare surviving example of an Hawaiian plantation town, cultural diversity is one of Hilo’s special charms. The local term, “mixed plate”, describes well the impact made by Polynesians, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Koreans, other Pacific Islanders and Europeans on Hilo’s mixed-race culture of today. All these ethnic groups blend in the faces of the people who give Hilo its charm. Its diverse shopping opportunities, its small scale and its friendliness makes Hilo the perfect town in which to linger just a little longer.

Cool Cruiser

Highlights: This was an experiment of how-many-sea-days we like, and it turns out we loved the extra sea days. We had an inside cabin and cabana, which worked well ~4 or so of the sea days were very “Vancouvery”, but that didn’t stop us.  We bundled up and read until we got too cold to do so, then escaped to the Crow’s nest for coffee.

This was as close to a perfect cruise as we could hope for. We kept busy, were up later than we should have been, and made many new friends. We also saw a bunch of Hawaii!

The port:  The YVR port was good for us, but not for everyone. Embarking was slowish for a few reasons: this was only the 2nd ship of the season and systems were down in the AM. Despite this, we were on board in about an hour after arriving at the port (so by 1:30PM).

Disembarking was super fast, but it helped that we knew Canada Place pretty well. Tip: exit out of the port on the far right and skip the taxi/bus lines if you can, took us less than 15 minutes to be on the road (transit or uber a few blocks away).

The ship: It was a full, but not too full cruise (2560 pax I think). There were very few kids and the demographic skewed older (making us younger!). Lines were only bad for MDR for early seating on dressy days (tip: eat later when the crowd skews older)

We didn’t wait for anything, but we also planned around known busy times.

Entertainment: We found many more entertainment options, and many quality improvements as well. There was a new jazz band in ocean bar (also played with the comedians).

There was a new main stage act: the Major 4th singers, 2 new shows.

There were 3 different comedians (2 had musical acts), that hit all age groups pretty well.

There were many more EXC talks, quite varied as well.

BB’s, Rolling Stones, and the duelling pianos were all excellent, the highlight of our trip.

There was easily 2x more entertainment compared to November or August of ‘22.

We missed a bunch of the entertainment, but speciality art classes were back, the art auction, and the regular game shows, trivia, and such.

This was Holland America’s 150th, and there was much celebration. They even had a HA Gin and Beer (the Gin was fabulous). There was an Orange party, and a dressy night on King’s day.

Food: There were food improvements across the board, and we didn’t have a bad meal or dish. I am an accomplished cook, and quite good at eating too. The MDR was elevated from our last two trips, the Lido was more consistent and varied, speciality restaurants were strong, and the quick eateries were improved.

We ate dinners at either the MDR or Lido, about 50%/50% depending how busy we were. We did each specialty restaurant once. Lunches were mostly quick service or the Lido (when on ship). We did High Tea once.

We had no bad food, and mostly had excellent food. Service was improved generally, and we still heard too much complaining. We did not wait anywhere for long, but this wasn’t true for early diners in the MDR on a few select nights.

Ports and excursions: All port days were excellent, and where we tendered it was fine (tip: remember that tendering can be pretty slow, so plan extra time in your schedule). The highlight for us was the beauty, nature, and stories of the peoples of Hawaii. Fresh poke was a close second.

We had one bad tour (a bad guide, poor itinerary), but that’s on us. The other tours were great to fantastic, including the crater national park and wine tour. Our self-directed days were all great, and we found interesting things to do with very little stress, thanks especially to the EXC talks (Betty Ann is a rockstar!).

Victoria was a surprise highlight, and walking from the terminal to downtown was perfect during the blossom season. We both grew up visiting Victoria regularly, but hadn’t walked that part of the city in many years.

Ship improvements:  We were on the Koningsdam in August (and NS in November), and we found the ship in, well, ship shape.

The library was not complete yet, but they did have books out in the Crows nest, in addition to a nice selection of games and puzzles. The Crows nest changes were nice (more seating, new seating), and the coffee shop wasn’t moved.

Starlink was fantastic, as good as 4/5G in most urban areas. You could stream Instagram and Facebook stories. If you had the streaming package you could stream pretty much anything (we saw a lot of sports on laptops and iPads).

There were some minimal changes in the cabanas (some new cabana coverings), but no new hot tub.

Things we've learned: There is a flow to a particular ship, itinerary, and passengers. Figure it out!

We tended to eat lunch late, so quick service waits were super low. We observed the MDR busy times and avoided it, and didn’t wait there. Bar service is about timing and getting to know the staff.

Entertainment flow is similar, learn to avoid rushes, and grab a seat early if you really want to see something. Hit up the later shows if possible.

Fun facts: The duelling pianos on the Koningsdam are fake (cases around electric pianos) due to a snag during construction of the ship. They’re real on the NS, and we all laughed when George opened up his piano to show an empty box. They sounded great, despite that.

Canadian ports have really weird rules for bar service (we’re Canadian, so it’s a fun fact for us). Only 1 bar can operate per floor for “safety” reasons. This makes service in Canadian ports way more work for ship staff.

There was some sort of power issue on the ship one night where people got together to sing. That practice continued after hours in a number of venues! We loved seeing guests have so much fun together.

What’s next for us? We have more cruises booked! We booked another on this trip, a bucket list cruise to the Antarctic. We love how booking onboard, especially further out, gets you such fantastic deals.

Iberian coast (NS) - September 2023 Eclipse tour; Mexican Riviera (Zaandam) - April 2024 Voyage of the Vikings (Zuiderdam) - August 2024 Antarctica (Oosterdam) - January 2025

We’re really enjoying the music, education, and port intense nature of HAL, The great staff and food are a bonus!

Fantastic review and your postings are always appreciated by me. Glad you had another positive experience on HAL. It does make me regret a bit however that i am booked for Alaska on the Nieuw Amsterdam instead of the Koningsdam in terms of the internet service.

Thanks so much for your review, it mirrored our experiences in Feb/March on Koningsdam to Hawaii and the South Pacific. We loved it so much that we booked an extra week on Koningsdam in the Fall in Alaska and a Med cruise on Nieuw Statendam! We had expected to dislike the Pinnacle ships, but we were very happy to change our opinion!

What a fabulous group of cruises you have coming up, on all the different sizes of ship! I know you will enjoy them all, with such a positive attitude, and please report back, to balance out all the negative reports we have been seeing lately!

I haven’t been thrilled with my last couple cruises on the koningsdam but I always thought the food was really good and hot as well.  Happy to hear the internet is quite good.  It sucked in November.  I wish hal would get it going on the other ships sooner than later.  Thanks for the review.
