NBC Sports is bringing its traveling studio soccer show, “ Premier League Mornings Live ,” to Southern California for the first time next month as part of a two-day fan festival outside the Coliseum.

The event, scheduled for Oct. 23-24, will include a live broadcast of the Premier League studio show — hosted by Rebecca Lowe and featuring analysts Robbie Earle, Robbie Mustoe and Tim Howard — as well as action from nine EPL games on the NBC and Telemundo family of networks.

The fan festival is the sixth production of “Premier League Mornings Live” that NBC Sports has done on location and the first since the December 2019 event in Miami Beach. Last season’s event, scheduled for Philadelphia, was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to Miami, previous fan festivals were held in New York, Washington, Boston and Austin, Texas.

Travel Distances 2023/24 – English Premier League

la travel premier league

Here at TSZ we have put together a list of all the travel distances for the 2023/24 English Premier League season.

The distances have been determined by using the shortest route by road on Google Maps at the time of writing. The mileage shown is for one-way journeys from a team's home stadium to the opponent's home stadium for all away games in the league campaign. The results DO NOT factor in the return journey, and as this is strictly a 'by road' analysis, other means of transport (e.g. train) are not considered.

TOTAL DISTANCES

la travel premier league

  • Unsurprisingly, Newcastle fans will have the furthest to travel in the 2023/24 Premier League season. Their average away day commute is over 230 miles, and their total distance is over a thousand miles more than Bournemouth, who are second on the list.
  • Premier League newcomers Luton Town have the shortest distance to travel for away games in the Premier League this season, averaging 107.1 miles.

WHAT IS THE LONGEST AWAY TRIP IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE?

la travel premier league

  • The match-up between Bournemouth and Newcastle represents the longest single away trip in the 2023/24 Premier League season (347 miles).
  • In fact, the visit to Newcastle is the longest away day for over half of the teams competing in the 2023/24 Premier League season.

WHAT IS THE SHORTEST AWAY TRIP IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE?

la travel premier league

  • The closest match-up in the Premier League this season will be the Merseyside Derby between Liverpool and Everton, with Anfield and Goodison Park being just a stone's throw away from each other.
  • Even Newcastle's shortest trip (Burnley) will see local fans have to travel over 100 miles.

English Premier League: Travel Guide for a Soccer Game in England

Things to Know When Going to a Game in the World's Best Soccer League

la travel premier league

Interest in soccer has increased in the United States due to recent World Cup success and more games being shown on a variety of cable networks. NBC's deal with the English Premier League (known also as the Barclays Premier League or EPL) and Fox's deal with the Champions League have specifically brought Americans in touch with the most talented players of the world's most global sport. As fans now tune in to see their favorite teams and players on TV, they're also becoming more interested in seeing games live. Going to a soccer game overseas is the equivalent of going to a college football game in America. Fans show more passion during games than you can possibly imagine with each team having a series of chants that can be throughout the game. Given the ease of getting to England and our familiarity with the language, more Americans are finding themselves attached to the EPL. Here's what you need to know when planning to see your favorite English Premier League team in person.

Getting to England

First, you'll need to get to England, which is easy in the larger scheme of things, but obviously not cheap. Many airlines fly to London from the major cities in the United States.‎ The cheapest times of year to fly to London is between November and March, so that jives well with the EPL season. The best time to look for pricing to fly at those times is the end of August or the beginning of November. Traveling on Tuesdays and Wednesdays is historically the cheapest days to travel. The easiest way to look for flight is with travel aggregator Kayak unless you specifically know what airline you want to travel on.

Getting Around England

Once you're in England, you'll need to get to wherever you're watching your EPL game. ‎Six teams (as of 2019-20) are in London and taking the Underground (the English version of America's subway, not to be confused with an English subway, which is their version of an underpass) is extremely easy. Every EPL team in London is located near an underground station. The longest distance you’ll need to travel from Central London to see an EPL team is the hour it takes to visit Crystal Palace.

Getting around the country to other cities is just as easy. England's train system works very well and is quicker than driving. Every EPL city is within three and a half hours of London with Newcastle being the furthest away. Tickets for the train aren’t cheap (as is the same with trains in America) with prices starting at approximately 60 pounds each way and schedules are available at the National Rail website . You can obviously also rent a car and drive around the English countryside as you check out a game in the process.

Getting tickets for Barclays Premier League games is the hardest part of your adventure. Most good teams have large season ticket holder bases, which prevents many tickets from hitting the open market. The reason teams have large bases is because games aren't televised in England during the main 3 p.m. local time slot on Saturdays. (This is done to encourage fans to see lower level league games, providing revenue to keep them in business. The perception is that fans would rather watch their favorite EPL team on TV instead of seeing their local lower division team play.)

The best way to ensure getting tickets is by signing up for a team's membership. The costs are reasonable with the big Clubs (£30 – Everton, £43 – Tottenham, £28 - Chelsea & Manchester City, £27 - Liverpool, £35 - Manchester United, £34 – Arsenal) and there are two key perks for being members. The first is that members get a chance to buy available tickets after season ticket holders, but before the general public. You may never use the other features of the membership, but your goal here is to acquire tickets or else you wouldn't be reading this piece. Each membership gets access to only one ticket per membership during the initial membership sale, so you'll need multiple memberships for multiple tickets.

Tickets (cont.)

The second benefit is that some clubs have secondary markets that allow members have access to. Currently Viagogo services Aston Villa, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Newcastle, and Queens Park Rangers. Arsenal and Liverpool run their own ticket exchange in-house. Tottenham has a deal with Stubhub , but a few other teams have tickets that end up there as well. Generally, the supply on the secondary market isn’t as much as you’d see for American sports.

Some slightly less talented teams allow ticket purchasing access to those who purchase tickets for a previous game in the season before those who haven't. It's a somewhat silly policy if there are people who want to go when Manchester United is in town get priority to buy tickets because they bought tickets for a Stoke City game earlier in the year. Then the home team loses out on concessions and merchandise sales when the fan most likely doesn't show for the Stoke City game. (On the contrary, the argument could be made that the Stoke City tickets would never have been sold anyway and this just adds extra revenue to the home team.)

Where to Stay

Hotel availability will vary based on what game you're attending, but generally, the home team's fans live in the city‎ where the game is taking place and the away team's fans go back to their city after the game since taking the train from city to city is so easy. You might want to do the same if you’re seeing a game at a smaller team outside of London and can get back with ease. Hotels in London will generally be more expensive, but you’ll be able to see and do more things in England. Those seeing games in London shouldn’t worry too much about staying near the stadium of the game they’re seeing. As mentioned above, getting to the stadiums are easy, so you might as well stay in a more enjoyable neighborhood. Wherever you stay, you use Kayak again to help with your hotels.

Pregame Festivities

As you'd expect, fans love to have a few pints before the game (and possibly a few after). ‎Bars around the stadiums are always packed before the game, so get there a couple hours before to bask in some local "football" conversation. Fans will start filling the grounds at least an hour and a half before kickoff to put up their flags on the facade of the stands (an English football tradition), sing the local Club's songs, and watch warmups. To tune up your voice, check out some of the lyrics before you go so that you can sing along in style.

Real Madrid clinch LaLiga title after Girona beat Barcelona

Real Madrid ease past Cadiz 3-0 to ensure they will win LaLiga if Barcelona fail to beat Girona. (2:11)

  • Alex Kirkland
  • Rodrigo Faez

Real Madrid won the LaLiga title on Saturday, beating Cádiz before rivals Barcelona lost at Girona and gave Madrid an insurmountable lead at the top.

Madrid's comfortable 3-0 win over Cádiz at the Bernabéu means they've taken 87 points from 34 games. Girona beat Barça 4-2 at Montilivi on Saturday to move into second place, 13 points behind Madrid with just four games to play.

- Stream on ESPN+: LaLiga, Bundesliga, more (U.S.)

The Spanish giants could still make it a LaLiga and Champions League double this season, as they prepare to face Bayern Munich in their Champions League semifinal second leg on Wednesday. The sides tied 2-2 in the first leg.

Speaking after the title had been confirmed by Barça's loss, Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti said his team would celebrate in due course but wished to focus on that semifinal.

"We are very happy. All our fans are very happy. We deserved this title and we would like to celebrate with our fans," Ancelotti said.

"But I think the fans can understand that we have a big challenge on Wednesday and we have to prepare for it, to give more joy to the fans. We will celebrate the LaLiga title next weekend.

"Tomorrow we train, there's nothing organised tonight, everyone can do what they want. We have to focus on Wednesday's game."

While the upcoming semifinal postponed any official celebrations, scores of Madrid fans gathered near the Bernabéu after the Barça result to greet the players as they left the ground, including Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo Goes .

The 2023-24 league title is Madrid's 36th, extending their record for the most of any LaLiga team. It comes despite a season marred by long-term injuries to key players.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defenders Éder Militão and David Alaba all suffered ACL tears, with Courtois and Militão returning to action only this month.

Defender Nacho Fernández was the only starter from the first leg against Bayern to begin against Cadiz and he celebrated his 25th title with the club.

"It is a dream come true, winning a league at Real Madrid is something magnificent, and as captain, it is even better. It gives me goosebumps to think about going to Cibeles and be the one who puts the scarf during the celebration," Nacho said after Madrid secured the title.

Madrid have led LaLiga for much of the campaign, with their closest challengers being surprise contenders Girona rather than eternal rivals Barcelona.

Their title charge has been powered by goals from England midfielder Bellingham -- who has scored 18 times so far in his debut LaLiga season -- and Brazil international Vinícius Júnior , with 13 goals.

🙌 WE ARE THE LALIGA 2023/24 CHAMPIONS! 🙌 pic.twitter.com/Yo5QFw3SUO — Real Madrid C.F. 🇬🇧🇺🇸 (@realmadriden) May 4, 2024

It has also been built on defensive solidity, personified by centre-back Antonio Rüdiger , with the team conceding just 22 league goals.

Madrid made a flying start to the season, winning their first five league games, before suffering their only league defeat so far, a 3-1 loss to Atlético Madrid in the derby on Sept. 24.

Bellingham's impact was greatest in the first half of the season, scoring a record 13 goals in his first 13 Madrid appearances -- more than club legends Cristiano Ronaldo and Alfredo Di Stéfano -- after signing from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

He played a crucial role in two Clásico victories over Barcelona.

Bellingham scored twice in a 2-1 comeback win for Madrid at Montjuïc on Oct. 28 and then grabbed an added-time winner in a 3-2 victory at the Bernabéu on April 21, which ended any prospect of a late Barça title bid.

Before that, Girona's title challenge ended in a 4-0 thrashing at the Bernabéu on Feb. 10, with Bellingham scoring twice.

The league title is Madrid's second since Ancelotti returned to the club as coach in 2021. Ancelotti has now lifted six league titles in five countries: Italy, England, France, Germany and Spain.

It also means veterans Luka Modric and Nacho have won 25 trophies with Madrid, equalling the club record held by Karim Benzema and Marcelo .

Which clubs will be promoted to the Premier League this season?

T he race for promotion to the Premier League has been wild this season, as Leicester City and Ipswich Town have confirmed their promotion with Leicester winning the title on 97 points and Ipswich finished just one point behind them to return to the top-flight for the first time in 22 years after back-to-back promotions.

The playoffs weren't decided until very late in the 46-game Championship gauntlet, with the bracket set .

[ MORE: How to watch Premier League in USA ]

Leeds finished third after a poor finish to the season as they were six points off automatic promotion, while Southampton were comfortably fourth and won at Leeds on the final day to take some momentum in the playoffs. Familiar names, West Brom and Norwich, are fifth and sixth respectively to start the playoffs.

[ MORE: Championship playoff bracket, schedule in full ]

Here we'll go through the candidates to earn promotion this year.

Premier League promotion prognosis, 2023-24: The final tally

*only the top two teams go up automatically to the Premier League

Leicester City (1st place, 97 points, +48 goal difference) — PROMOTED, CHAMPIONS

Last season in Premier League: 2022-23

Enzo Maresca's side have led the way for most of the season and even after an almighty wobble they have sealed promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking and have won the title. They have a possession-based style under Maresca and three double-digit goal scorers in league play: Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Stephy Mavididi, and a guy named Jamie Vardy. Remember him? The Foxes also have some questions about Profit and Sustainability Rules to answer too. But for now they can celebrate being back in the Premier League,

Ipswich Town (2nd place, 96 points, +35 goal difference)— PROMOTED

Last season in Premier League: 2001-02

The Tractor Boys have had an amazing season under Kieran McKenna and have earned promotion after beating Huddersfield Town on the final day . They stumbled at a bad time as the nerves of getting back to the Premier League for the first time in over two decades appeared to be impacting them, but they recovered masterfully from that and a similar spell a few months ago. Ipswich have been promoted again a year after coming up from League One. Who would have predicted that? Nobody. What a story.

Leeds United (3rd place, 90 points, +38 goal difference) — PLAYOFF SEED NO. 1

Leeds skidded down the stretch but are loaded with talent heading into the playoffs. Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter are Premier League talents doing it big in the second tier and although Leeds have so many attacking talents Daniel Farke's men ran out of steam at the wrong time. Can they recover?

Southampton (4th place, 87 points, +24 goal difference) — PLAYOFF SEED NO. 2

After an incredible 25-game unbeaten run came to an end, Saints slumped, recovered and then slumped again as their automatic hopes were dashed and they have officially locked up fourth spot, meaning they will play whoever finishes fifth in the table in the playoff semifinals. Forward Adam Armstrong leads the way with finishes while the likes of Che Adams and loan signing David Brooks are chipping in with big goals too. Jan Bednarek and Flynn Downes have been key to the season as Russell Martin's Saints average the division's best possession by some margin with their free-flowing possession-based style which usually ends in chaotic high-scoring games. At the moment defensively they are all over the place and big injuries have arrived late in the season with Gavin Bazunu and Stuart Armstrong out of the playoffs.

West Bromwich Albion (5th place, 75 points, +23 goal difference) — PLAYOFF SEED NO. 3

Last season in Premier League: 2020-21

One of the Championship's best defensive units, the Baggies have Marcelo Bielsa's former assistant Carlos Corberan as their manager and he worked wonders taking Huddersfield to the playoffs a few seasons ago. West Brom are a robust side but they have run out of steam in recent weeks with just one win from their last seven and had three defeats in a row heading into the final weekend's win.

Norwich City (6th place, 73 points, +15 goal difference) - — PLAYOFF SEED NO. 4

Last season in Premier League: 2021-22

Goalkeeper Angus Gunn has been very good, and both USMNT star Josh Sargent and Jonathan Rowe have been free-scoring when healthy and/or in-form this season. Borja Sainz has scored some bangers recently, while Sargent has been in red-hot form in recent weeks as the Canaries are pushing hard to get back in the big time. Head coach, former USMNT player David Wagner, knows all about getting a team out of the Championship and they are surging. Perhaps Norwich are the team you don't want to play in the playoffs?

Leicester City have returned to the top flight after a season that flitted between collapse and catharsis.

A Premier League return is the only certainty in Leicester’s cloudy future

Enzo Maresca’s side kept their heads to secure promotion but financial worries loom large as club prepare for the top flight

A campaign that began with Enzo Maresca insisting his Leicester players sleep overnight at their sprawling, 185-acre Seagrave training base for the first week of pre-season in the name of team building has ended with their primary mission accomplished: promotion boxed off, the Championship crown likely to follow.

Leicester’s most memorable and marvellous moment came when they confounded expectations; this time, it was a case of simply meeting them by getting back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise that surely the most expensively assembled squad in the division – their wage bill was the biggest outside the Premier League top six 12 months ago – has sealed that return after Leeds lost at QPR on Friday night, but it turned into a slog after they ceded a 17-point lead. In the past couple of months, their campaign has flitted between a sense of collapse and catharsis. “It has been a very long season,” Maresca said with a wry smile this week.

Those days last July allowed Maresca – a disciple of Pep Guardiola in terms of style of play and seemingly tailoring (few can pull off a cream pullover) – to hammer home his possession-hungry mantra, one that has split opinion among supporters despite Leicester being on course to record a century of points, a tally only Burnley, last season, have managed since Leicester won promotion under Nigel Pearson a decade ago.

Then, few would have envisaged the extraordinary run that followed – the 5,000-1 title , Champions League trips, a first FA Cup – but, rather than dreaming of a repeat of those heady days, pragmatism will surely strangle their return to the top division.

Beyond the golden relief, the scent of champagne, the confetti and the wild celebrations – Maresca jived with Abdul Fatawu in the dressing room after the forward’s hat-trick in the midweek rout of Southampton rendered promotion all but a formality – there is an unsettling hue of grey.

Now, finally, we know which division Leicester will play in next season but look past that and there is a jarring current of unknowns. Most of which stem from Leicester’s ultimate failure to keep up with the Premier League’s elite in the years since Claudio Ranieri did the unthinkable.

Will the Premier League release the transfer embargo the English Football League imposed on the club for breaching profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) in March? If not, what happens to Jamie Vardy, Wilfred Ndidi and Jannik Vestergaard, among the regulars out of contract at the end of June? Will Leicester be powerless to rubber-stamp the £14.5m deal they agreed with Sporting to sign Fatawu in the event of promotion? “In this moment, it is complicated,” Maresca said on Tuesday.

Jamie Vardy wears the captain’s armband.

Under the embargo, Leicester cannot re-sign players or register new ones without EFL approval. Leicester will formally become a Premier League club again at the annual general meeting in Harrogate at the end of June. The league may well have a few questions for them.

Then there is the small matter of a potential double whammy of points deductions. Will they materialise and, if so, when? Leicester issued legal action after being charged by the Premier League for allegedly breaking PSR rules for the period ending 2022‑23. It seems unlikely Leicester will start next season on minus points, with their case likely to prove protracted because it falls outside the framework introduced last year to accelerate decisions.

after newsletter promotion

The club are expected to exceed the permitted financial losses for the three-year cycle ending 2023-24, unless they are able to generate significant funds before the accounting period ends on 30 June. It seems inevitable that Leicester will consider, if not seek, offers for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, comfortably their most valuable asset. They have not denied being at risk of breaching the EFL’s threshold limit for 2023-24 and when releasing their most recent accounts announcing a £90m loss this month, conceded they “may be found not in compliance with the applicable P&S rules for the three-year reporting period ending 2022-23”.

The driver of Leicester’s financial headaches is heavy spending but this season they have not got a lot wrong in terms of recruitment. Mads Hermansen, a goalkeeper as comfortable with the ball at his feet as in his gloves, was arguably the most important piece of the puzzle. Fatawu, who was flagged to Maresca by the head of recruitment, Martyn Glover, and Stephy Mavididi have been revelations on the wings and Harry Winks has been tidy and consistent in midfield.

The defenders Conor Coady and Callum Doyle, the latter signed on loan from Manchester City, have not played as much as expected owing to the form of Vestergaard, whose transformation is arguably the story of Leicester’s season given he spent much of the last one training in isolation. That Vestergaard, a 6ft 6in centre-back, has had 4,290 touches this season – more than any other player in the division – illustrates how central he has been to their success and his role in fuelling back-to-front attacks. Leicester have scored a league-high 86 goals, with Dewsbury-Hall contributing 14 assists.

Given their wobble – and it was a sizeable one given they lost six of their 10 matches before beating West Brom last Sarurday – Leicester deserve credit for getting over the line. Vardy, naturally, has played his part. The 37-year-old has averaged at least one goal every other game in all competitions this season and he initiated the players’ meeting that prompted the much-needed turnaround after a shock defeat at struggling Plymouth .

“There was a lot of honesty,” said Marc Albrighton, one of those whose contract is expiring. “We felt sometimes over the course of especially the second half of the season, the lads seemed to not want to take certain risks.”

Leicester may pay the price for one or two on their return to the top table.

NBC to continue push for Premier League games in U.S., says leading exec

Jon Miller, a leading executive at NBC Sports and an instrumental figure in negotiating the network’s multi-billion dollar media rights deal with the Premier League, says he will “continue to push for” the first English top-flight games to be played in the United States.

NBC have held the exclusive rights to broadcast the Premier League in the United States since 2013, overseeing dramatic growth in the audience and popularity of English football’s top-flight. NBC’s latest six-year contract began in 2022 and is worth $450million-per-season to the Premier League, which represents more than five times the first deal signed with NBC when they began broadcasting the Premier League in 2013. As such, NBC are among the Premier League’s most significant partners and they contribute hugely to the spending power and earning potential of top-flight clubs.

Behind the scenes at NBC: 'We want to be the network of the Premier League'

Miller spoke to The Athletic as part of an in-depth, behind-the-scenes report into the relationship between the Premier League and NBC Sports, revealing the inner workings of a broadcaster that has delivered the six most-viewed Premier League games in US history over the past sixteen months, with the recent draw between Manchester City and Arsenal drawing a record 2.6m viewers across their English and Spanish language channels. Nearly 40 million people have watched the Premier League each season since NBC acquired the rights in 2013 and a study by Nielsen revealed that 48 per cent of all football fans in the US now describe a Premier League side as their favourite. As such, the interest and demand is clear.

The possibility of taking one-off domestic league fixtures abroad increased this month when world governing body FIFA were dropped from a landmark lawsuit by the U.S. events promoter Relevent, who in 2018 were thwarted in their attempts to take a La Liga fixture between Girona and Barcelona to Miami in the United States. A five-year court battle has seen Relevent, founded by Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, accuse FIFA of acting as a monopoly and preventing fair competition. FIFA’s directive, issued in 2018, said that domestic games ought to be played in their home territory, but FIFA and Relevent settled on their case, with FIFA seemingly prepared to revisit its policies on this issue.

FIFA dropped from lawsuit seeking to allow domestic games in foreign countries

The case was settled without prejudice, meaning Relevent reserve the right to reopen their litigation should FIFA not come up with a satisfactory reconsideration of their position. This has left many people within the football industry to believe that FIFA is stepping back from this struggle and leaving it to individual leagues, federations and confederations to tussle over the matter of whether domestic games can be played outside of a home territory.

In 2008, the Premier League previously tried and failed to introduce a 39th round of fixtures, which would have been played across the world, only to drop the plans in the face of a backlash from supporters and media. Last week, the Premier League’s chief executive Richard Masters acknowledged the door is “ajar” but said it is not currently in the Premier League’s plans.

In an interview with The Athletic , Miller, NBC Sports’ president of acquisitions and partnerships, was asked if he would be supportive of matches heading to the US to further connect English football with its American audience. He said: “Very much so. And this is a point that we’ve had conversations with the Premier League and they’ve been very open and receptive to listening to me. We did the Premier League Summer Series (in pre-season) last year where we had six teams come over; Fulham, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Chelsea, Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford. We had nine games in seven days in five cities around America (and 265,000 fans were in attendance). It was great.

la travel premier league

“All the teams that came over did really well, had a great experience, and really were able to interact with the fan base. And the Premier League saw that it was very successful. At some point in the future, I would love to see a couple of Premier League games open the season here in big stadiums on our opening weekend. And I know that’s something that we’ll continue to push for because I think that there’s an American audience here that would like to see regular season games but in the meantime, we’ll continue to work with the Premier League to do everything we can to make the games available to as many people as possible.”

Miller, a formidable part of the team that negotiated the most recent contract with the Premier League, also revealed that in an ideal world, he would like to bring the viewer greater audio access and offer deeper insight into how coaches communicate with their players.

He said: “There are two things that really bring the viewer and the fan closer to the action: access and audio. So whenever you can increase your access and build your stars up, that’s great. And people love to hear what Jurgen Klopp is saying to his team or what he’s saying on the sidelines. We realise there’s got to be some protection against that. But we think that those are the kind of things that we’re continuing to push the envelope on. And the Premier League is responsive. They’re really good when we come to them with ideas. Far be it for me to try to tell the Premier League what makes a good product. Their product is spectacular. But much like we do with the NFL, and golf, we constantly have conversations with our partners and brainstorm on things that we can do to make the games better and more appealing to try to grow our audience.”

Miller also insisted that the current wave of investigations and points deductions impacting the Premier League’s clubs does not, in his eyes, alter the value of the Premier League to a broadcaster. Both Everton and Nottingham Forest have received points deductions this season due to financial breaches, while champions Manchester City have been charged by the Premier League with 115 alleged breaches.

“It doesn’t question the value at all,” Miller insists. “What it says to me is that the people who are leading the Premier League are hands-on and going to enforce their rules. It’s important that the league has has gotten their hands around this, and they’re not afraid to impose discipline where they think it’s needed. I actually applaud them for the stance that they’re taking, even if it might move a team into a relegation zone or out of a Champions League or Europa League place. I would rather make sure that the league is run on a fair basis, that everybody plays by the same rules.”

Which teams are in Champions League, getting relegated, promoted? UCL-bound Girona seal Real Madrid's title

Ipswich town and leicester city are going up to the epl.

ucl-2.jpg

We are into the home stretch of the season across the major soccer leagues in Europe and all of the leagues except for the Premier League now have champions after Real Madrid secured their 36th La Liga crown . Girona did Los Blancos a solid while punching their historic UEFA Champions League ticket on a busy Saturday for developments. Elsewhere, Ipswich Town earned promotion back to the Premier League behind champions Leicester City and sealed a return to the topflight for the first time since their 2002 relegation. It came on the same day that Tom Brady's Birmingham City dropped into League One despite beating playoff-bound Norwich City on a thrilling final day.

Serie A and the Bundesliga are celebrating extra UEFA Champions League spots via the coefficient system while other UCL, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League berths are still being distributed. Some of the teams occupying the UEL and UECL spots are expected to upgrade to the UCL by the end of this campaign, so with just under one month until the Champions League final at Wembley Stadium closes the domestic club term, we look at who has secured what across the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga and Ligue 1.

  • EPL:  Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool.
  • La Liga:  Real Madrid (champions), Girona and Barcelona.
  • Serie A: Inter (champions) and Milan.
  • Bundesliga: Leverkusen (champions), Bayern, Stuttgart, Leipzig and Dortmund (via league and extra coefficient spot).
  • Ligue 1: PSG (champions) and Monaco (at least UCL qualifiers).

First and foremost, there are UCL positions being sewn up already with Italian champions Inter taking the first of Serie A's five Champions League places after an additional one was earned via the UEFA coefficient. Bayer Leverkusen have already been crowned German champions and Xabi Alonso's men could yet triumph in their Europa League semifinals too which also sees Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in the UCL. BVB's semifinal first-leg win over French champions Paris Saint-Germain secured VfB Stuttgart, RB Leipzig and themselves a Champions League spot for next year regardless of what happens next in Paris. Bayern's opponents Real Madrid were the only Spanish side to be guaranteed their Champions League place before they even knew how this year's semifinals and final would work out but their have since secured the La Liga title with four games to spare. Girona's win over Barca not only leapfrogged their Catalan rivals but secured a historic first-ever European outing for Girona in the UCL.

Europa League

  • EPL: Aston Villa (at least UEL).
  • La Liga: Athletic Club (at least UEL).
  • Serie A: Juventus (at least UEL).
  • Ligue 1:  Stade Brestois 29 (at least UEL).

The competition with the most places assigned so far is the Europa League with most teams currently occupying spots likely to upgrade to the Champions League by the end of the season. The EPL has two clubs currently in there with Liverpool and Aston Villa while La Liga already has Girona and Athletic Club who recently won the Copa del Rey. The Catalans fell away and out of contention for the title in La Liga but could yet secure a UCL berth and right now have a 13-point cushion on Athletic Bilbao who have already secured Europa League soccer despite sitting in the first UEL spot in the table. In Italy, Milan are sure to have at least a UEL berth along with Juventus but both will fancy themselves to snag a UCL upgrade while the Bundesliga currently has VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig although both could end up -- along with Dortmund -- getting into the Champions League should Germany earn the second additional berth.

Europa Conference League

  • La Liga: Atletico Madrid (at least UECL).
  • Serie A:  Bologna (at least UECL).
  • Ligue 1:  Lille OSC (at least UECL).

For now, one team apiece from most of the major leagues has at least Europa Conference League participation secured although current semifinalists Villa have now upgraded to the Europa League while battling Tottenham Hotspur for a Champions League spot in the Premier League. Bologna are currently Serie A's UECL lock but their form is such that it could be at least a UEL place if not UCL given their pace while Lille have a European spot wrapped up which could yet end up as a Champions League spot and possibly even as PSG's runners-up.

  • EPL: Sheffield United.
  • La Liga: Almeria.
  • Serie A: Salernitana.
  • Bundesliga: Darmstadt 98.

We now have our first relegations from the European topflights with Sheffield United, Almeria, Salernitana and Darmstadt dropping down into their respective second tiers. Although more will join them in the coming days and weeks, it could take until the final round of games for all of these places to be confirmed.

  • EPL:  Leicester (automatically as Championship winners) and Ipswich (also automatic) while Leeds United, Southampton, West Bromwich Albion and Norwich will contest the playoffs.
  • Serie A:  Parma (automatic), Como, Venezia, Cremonese and Catanzaro (all at least Serie B playoffs).
  • Bundesliga: FC St. Pauli (at least promotion playoffs).
  • Ligue 1:  Auxerre, Saint-Etienne and Angers (at least Ligue 1 promotion playoffs).

Teams across the five major leagues have started to be relegated and Leicester City are now 100% certain of promotion back to the Premier League as champions as well as Ipswich who end a 22-year wait to return to the EPL in second place. In Italy, Serie B's Parma are not yet champions but nobody else in the second tiers is confirmed to go up just yet. A handful of clubs aare sure of at least a playoff spot including Como, Venezia, Cremonese and Catanzaro as well as AJ Auxerre, Saint-Etienne and Angers of Ligue 2, so expect more names to join these ones in the coming days and weeks.

la travel premier league

This is the second consecutive year that the LPL, which is growing in strength and popularity, is conducting a ‘player auction.’ During the initial three editions, the players were picked by a ‘player draft.’

Every team has the option of having a maximum of 24 and a minimum of 20 players in a squad while each squad should consist of six overseas players.

It will be mandatory to play an Under-23 player (Sri Lanka) in the playing XI. The LPL will be conducted from July 1 to 21, in Kandy, Dambulla and Colombo.

The premier league continues its american sports law education.

On the heels of the European Court of Justice’s December 2023 decision concerning the proposed “European Super League,” the Premier Premier League’s possible 2025-2026 salary cap and a recent opinion concerning FIFA’s rules on player movement demonstrate that Europe is continuing to learn from decades of legal developments in American sports.

The Premier League Salary Cap

According to an article from Sportico , the English Premier League has approved a proposal to impose a salary cap on player spending starting with the 2025-26 season. The proposal is to be voted on at the league’s meeting in June.

The reported cap is to be equal to five times the amount that the lowest earning club received in television revenue. Last season, the cap would have thus been equal to $653 million. Notably, the cap would include not just player wages but also transfer fees and fees paid to players’ agents.

The league’s proposal follows years of growing player wages that have outpaced gains in revenue. Indeed, the U.K. government is considering a proposal to introduce a government body to regulate the sport as part of a stabilization effort.

The American Comparison

In 1984, the NBA was the first major American sports league to introduce a salary cap. The NFL and NHL followed with their own caps in subsequent decades. While MLB does not have a salary cap per se , it does have a punitive luxury tax scheme which serves much the same purpose – to restrain player salaries.

Imessage s lock on america is this really the beginning of the end, arrowhead tells helldivers 2 players to change reviews to negative over psn linking.

The absence of a salary cap in MLB speaks to a fundamental legal point with which the Premier League will also have to contend. In America, the National Labor Relations Act requires employers and unionized employees (like those in professional sports) to negotiate in good faith concerning the wages, hours, and terms and conditions of employment. The end results of those negotiations are collective bargaining agreements which comprehensively govern the league’s operations, including items such as player salaries, benefits, schedules, drafts, free agency, and much more. Thus, the absence of a salary cap in MLB is the result of the resistance to it by the MLB Players Association.

U.K. labor law , specifically the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 , provides for substantially the same process between British employers and trade unions. Not surprisingly then, the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA), the trade union for soccer players in England, says it must be consulted about the proposed salary cap.

The Premier League did not respond to a request for comment concerning whether it believes it needs to negotiate the proposed salary cap with the PFA.

The Super League Decision

The uncertain legal footing of the Premier League’s proposed salary cap is the latest example of European soccer’s belated – or perhaps failed – effort to learn from decades of developments on the intersection of law and sports in America.

In December 2023, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) issued a ruling concerning the proposed “European Super League” which also reflected that Europe would do well to look across the pond.

The well-known background is that FIFA and UEFA iShares MSCI EAFE ETF , FIFA’s European member, want to prevent the launch of a Super League which sees the best teams participate in an American-style closed system of competition, i.e. , no promotion and relegation. When the plans for such a league were announced, FIFA and UEFA, supported by outraged fans, threatened to suspend any teams or players that participated in the Super League.

The relevant legal background concerns what American lawyers call “antitrust law” and European lawyers call “competition law.” European Union (EU) competition law substantially tracks the U.S. Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. Section 1 of the Sherman Act prohibits two or more parties from conspiring to unreasonably restrain trade in a market. Article 101 of the Treaty on the Functioning of Europe (TFEU) (1958) does the same thing. Section 2 of the Sherman Act prohibits a party from abusing a monopoly position. Article 102 of the TFEU does the same.

The crux of the CJEU’s decision was that EU sports organizations are subject to competition law and that their practices and rules must include “substantive criteria and detailed procedural rules for ensuring that they are transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate.” This determination is substantially similar to the rule of reason test in American antitrust jurisprudence, which weighs the anticompetitive effects and procompetitive benefits of restraints on trade. Whether FIFA and UEFA practices and rules meet the outlined test is something to be decided by a Spanish court on remand.

At the same time, the CJEU acknowledged that the unique nature of sports requires competitors to come together to agree on some rules to produce matches. Nevertheless, it ruled that Article 165 of the TFEU, which recognizes the EU’s interests in “developing the European dimension in sport,” does not protect FIFA and UEFA from competition scrutiny.

Lassana Diarra Case

Another relevant case is a legal challenge by Lassana Diarra, a French player. Diarra alleges that FIFA rules which require a player’s club to be financially responsible for payments to the player’s prior club where the player terminated his contract early are violations of EU competition law. In an April 30, 2024 advisory opinion , Advocate General Maciej Szpunar agreed with Diarra’s position. Szpunar recognized that such rules restrain players’ ability to move between clubs.

Look To America

The issues identified in both the CJEU’s decision and the Diarra case are well-trod for American sports lawyers. First, in the 1950s, in cases involving boxing and the NFL, the Supreme Court held that other sports leagues were not entitled to the anomalous antitrust exemption MLB had received decades earlier. Then, in the 1970s, the leagues persuaded courts that their unique nature meant that their restrictive rules prohibiting or limiting free agency should be viewed under the rule of reason, rather than considered per se illegal, i.e. , illegal on their face. The leagues nevertheless had difficulty convincing the courts that these rules were reasonable.

Consequently, the leagues turned to negotiating with their players to have such restrictions protected by the non-statutory labor exemption. The non-statutory labor exemption is a policy crafted by the Supreme Court which grants antitrust immunity to employers who agree on rules that restrain the labor market so long as those rules are negotiated with the employees’ union. The EU too recognizes a non-statutory labor exemption .

For decades now, the non-statutory labor exemption has underpinned labor relations in America sports. In exchange for salary caps, player drafts, and limits on free agency, the players receive a guaranteed portion of league income (which is largely from television broadcast rights). After years of litigation concerning the bounds of the exemption in the 1980s and 90s, labor relations in American sports has been quite peaceful in recent years. It seems that European sports leagues could have saved themselves a lot of trouble by learning from these cases earlier.
