Calculator Use

Calculate speed, distance or time using the formula d = st, distance equals speed times time. The Speed Distance Time Calculator can solve for the unknown sdt value given two known values.

Time can be entered or solved for in units of secondes (s), minutes (min), hours (hr), or hours and minutes and seconds (hh:mm:ss). See shortcuts for time formats below.

To solve for distance use the formula for distance d = st, or distance equals speed times time.

distance = speed x time

Rate and speed are similar since they both represent some distance per unit time like miles per hour or kilometers per hour. If rate r is the same as speed s , r = s = d/t. You can use the equivalent formula d = rt which means distance equals rate times time.

distance = rate x time

To solve for speed or rate use the formula for speed, s = d/t which means speed equals distance divided by time.

speed = distance/time

To solve for time use the formula for time, t = d/s which means time equals distance divided by speed.

time = distance/speed

Time Entry Formats hh:mm:ss

You can use a dash (-), period (.) or colon (:) as separators and must always use 2 separators. For example, 15-06-22, 15.06.22 and 15:06:22 are all interpreted as 15 hours 6 minutes 22 seconds or 15:06:22.

Entry limits allowed:

  • hours 0 to 999
  • minutes 0 to 59
  • seconds 0 to 59

A car can go from rest to 45 km/hr in 5 seconds. What is its acceleration?

Guys how much time will a cyclist take to cover 132 METRES With a speed of 8 km/ph

@Mike Depends on how fast that actually is. For every 10 mph above 60, but below 120, you save 5 seconds a mile. But between the 30-60 area, every ten saves 10 seconds a mile (if I am remembering correctly), and every 10 between 15-30 is 20 seconds. Realistically, it isn't likely isn't worth it, unless it is a relatively straight drive with no stops, in which case you will likely go up a gear for the drive and thus improve gas efficiency for the trip. Only really saves time if it is over long trips 300+ miles (in which case, assuming you were on the interstate) that 5 seconds a mile would save you 25 minutes from the drive, making it go from 4h35m to 4h10m. For me, I have family across the U.S., so family visits are usually 900-1400 miles. Even only driving 5 above usually saves me 90-150 minutes or so (since I often have stretches where I drive on US highways which have 55 mph speed limits)

I would like to know if driving fast is worth it for short trips. If I drive 10 MPH over the speed limit for 10 miles, how much time do i save ? Is there an equation for that ?

it helps me in lot of stuff

awesome, helped me notice how long my taiga (electric seedoo) is going to last.

    Average Speed formula

The average speed calculation is simple: given the distance travelled and the time it took to cover that distance, you can calculate your speed using this formula:

Speed = Distance / Time

The metric unit of the result will depend on the units you put in. For example, if you measured distance in meters and time in seconds, your output from the average speed calculator would be ft/s. If distance was measured in miles and time in hours, then output will be in miles per hour (mph, mi/h), and so on for km/h, m/s, etc. - all supported by our tool.

How to calculate the average speed of a car?

Let us say that you travelled a certain distance with your car and want to calculate its average speed. The easiest way to do that would be by using the speed calculator above, but if you prefer, you can also do the math yourself. Either way, one needs to know the distance. If you have noted the distance on your odometer then you can use that number. Other options are to use a map (e.g. Google Maps) and measure the distance travelled based on your actual path (not via a straight line, unless you travelled by air in which case that would be a good approximation), or to use a GPS reading if you used navigation during the whole trip. Then you need to know the travel time. Make sure to subtract any rests or stops made from the total trip duration.

As you can see, to work out your speed in km/h or mph just apply the speed formula with the relevant units for distance and time. This is how to calculate average speed of a car, bike, boat, or any other vehicle or object.

    Finding average speed examples

Example 1: Using the equation above, find the speed of a train which travelled 120 miles in 2 hours and 10 minutes while making four stops, each lasting approximately 2.5 minutes. First, subtract the time spent at the train stops: 2.5 x 4 = 10 minutes. 2:10 minus 10 minutes leaves 2 hours of travel time. Then, apply the avg speed formula to get 120 miles / 2 hours = 60 mph (miles per hour).

Example 2: A cyclist travels to and from work, covering 10 km each way. It took him 25 minutes on the way to work and 35 minutes on the way back. What is the cyclist's average speed? First, add up the time to get 1 hour total. Also add up the distance: 5 + 5 = 10 kilometers. Finally, replace in the formula to get 10 / 1 = 10 km/h (kilometers per hour) on average in total.

    Average speed vs Average velocity

Average speed (what this calculator computes) and average velocity are not necessarily the same thing though they may coincide in certain scenarios. This is basic physics, but a lot of people find it confusing. Here are the differences in short.

Speed is a scalar value whereas velocity is the magnitude of a vector. Speed does not indicate direction whereas velocity does. The two coincide only when the journey from the start point to the end point happens on a straight line, such as in a drag race. If the movement path is not a straight line then the average velocity will be smaller than the mean speed.

In the world of marathon running, achieving a 5 hour marathon pace is a common goal for many runners. It represents a significant milestone in endurance and performance. This article will delve into the intricacies of mastering the 5 Hour Marathon Pace, providing you with a comprehensive chart, training plan, and success tips. Whether you are a seasoned marathon runner or a beginner looking to take on this challenge, this guide will equip you with the knowledge and strategies to conquer the 5-hour mark. So, let’s lace up our shoes and get started!

How Hard is a 5-Hour Marathon? Overcoming the Challenges of Endurance Running

Completing a 5-hour marathon is a commendable feat that requires dedication, preparation, and mental fortitude. While it may not demand the blistering speed of elite runners, it presents challenges that should not be underestimated.

1. The Shift in Focus: Endurance and Stamina

Unlike shorter races, such as 5Ks or 10Ks, where speed and pace are critical, a marathon is a true test of endurance and stamina. Running for 26.2 miles demands physical strength and mental resilience to overcome the inevitable hurdles along the way.

Training for a 5-hour marathon means gradually building up your body’s capacity to withstand prolonged physical stress. Long runs become a cornerstone of your training regimen to condition your muscles, cardiovascular system, and joints to sustain the demanding distance. Endurance training involves gradually increasing your weekly mileage and incorporating progressively longer runs to prepare your body for the marathon’s demands.

2. Physical and Mental Fatigue: Pushing Past the Wall

As the miles add up, physical and mental fatigue sets in, and this is where the infamous “wall” comes into play. The wall refers to a point in the race, typically around miles 18 to 20, where energy levels deplete, and running becomes exceedingly challenging. Extreme exhaustion, heavy legs, and mental exhaustion often characterize this experience.

Pushing past the wall is an arduous task that requires mental toughness. Many runners experience doubts during this phase, questioning their ability to finish the race. However, with adequate training and mental preparation, you can develop coping mechanisms to stay focused and determined to continue despite the difficulties.

3. Hydration and Nutrition: Balancing Intake

Proper hydration and nutrition are vital components of marathon training and racing. Maintaining an appropriate balance between water intake and electrolyte replenishment is crucial to prevent dehydration and muscle cramps.

During a 5-hour marathon, runners need to balance staying hydrated without overdrinking, which can lead to hyponatremia (low sodium levels). Adequate nutrition during the race is also essential to keep energy levels stable. Many runners consume energy gels, sports drinks, or other easily digestible snacks to replenish carbohydrates and maintain performance.

4. Preparation and Mindset: The Keys to Success

Mastering a 5-hour marathon involves diligent preparation and a positive mindset. Following a structured training plan, consistently sticking to your workouts, and gradually increasing your mileage will contribute to your success on race day.

In addition to physical training, cultivating mental strength is equally important. Visualization techniques, positive self-talk, and setting achievable goals can help you stay focused and confident throughout the marathon. Remind yourself of the hours you’ve spent training and your progress, knowing that you have what it takes to conquer the distance.

What is a 5-Hour Marathon Pace? Mastering the Art of Smart Pacing

The 5-hour marathon pace is the average speed a runner needs to maintain to finish the entire 26.2-mile race within the 5-hour time frame. Achieving this pace requires a careful balance of speed and endurance, with strategic pacing playing a critical role in accomplishing this milestone.

1. The Numbers: 11 Minutes and 27 Seconds per Mile

To complete a marathon in 5 hours, you’ll need to run at an average pace of approximately 11 minutes and 27 seconds per mile. This pace allows for consistent progress without overexerting yourself early in the race. While the pace may appear moderate, the cumulative effect of maintaining it for 26.2 miles requires substantial endurance.

2. Non-Uniform Pacing: Saving Energy for the Long Haul

Understanding that pacing is not uniform throughout the race is essential for success. In the early miles, getting caught up in the excitement and adrenaline of the start is tempting. However, pushing too hard initially can lead to premature fatigue and hinder your ability to maintain the 5-hour pace in the later stages.

The Importance of Smart Pacing:

A. Establishing a Strong Foundation: Start the marathon at a controlled and comfortable pace. Avoid the urge to go faster than your target pace in the initial miles. Establishing a solid foundation by pacing yourself conservatively will pay off later in the race.

B. Conserving Energy for the Second Half: The back half of the marathon is often more challenging than the first, and this is where smart pacing comes into play. By managing your energy reserves and not overextending yourself in the early stages, you’ll have more in the tank to tackle the latter part of the race.

C. Preventing the “Wall”: Going out too fast can contribute to hitting the dreaded “wall,” a point where energy stores are depleted, and the body struggles to maintain pace. Consistent and smart pacing helps delay the onset of fatigue and minimizes the risk of hitting the wall.

D. Focusing on Negative Splits: Negative splits occur when the second half of the marathon is completed faster than the first half. This pacing strategy is often associated with better overall race performance. To achieve negative splits, start conservatively and gradually increase your pace as the race progresses.

E. Mental Confidence: Maintaining a consistent and achievable pace throughout the race builds confidence. Knowing you are on track to meet your time goal can boost motivation and provide a sense of accomplishment.

Understanding the 5 Hour Marathon Pace

The 5 hour marathon pace refers to the average time it takes for a runner to complete a marathon race in 5 hours. It requires maintaining a consistent pace of approximately 11 minutes and 27 seconds per mile (or 7 minutes and 7 seconds per kilometer). This pace demands a combination of endurance, speed, and mental fortitude. It is important to note that the 5 hour marathon pace is achievable for most individuals with proper training and preparation.

Importance of Proper Training

Training plays a pivotal role in preparing your body and mind for the 5 hour marathon pace. It helps build endurance, improves cardiovascular fitness, strengthens muscles, and enhances overall performance. A structured training plan tailored to your fitness level and goals is essential for success. Let’s explore the critical components of an effective marathon training regimen.

Building a Base

Before embarking on marathon-specific training, it is crucial to establish a solid aerobic base. This phase involves gradually increasing your weekly mileage while focusing on easy-paced runs. It helps condition your body for the demands of longer distances.

Long runs form the backbone of marathon training. These runs are typically performed slower than your goal marathon pace, allowing your body to adapt to the rigors of running for an extended duration. Gradually increase your long run distance weekly, but remember to listen to your body and avoid overexertion.

Speed and Interval Training

Incorporating speed and interval training sessions into your training plan can help improve your overall speed and efficiency. These workouts involve shorter bursts of high-intensity effort alternated with recovery periods. They enhance cardiovascular capacity, increase the lactate threshold, and boost the running economy.

Cross-Training

Cross-training activities like cycling, swimming, or strength training can complement your running regimen. They provide low-impact workouts, prevent injury, and enhance muscular balance and strength.

Training for a 5-Hour Marathon: A Step-by-Step Guide to Success

Preparing for a 5-hour marathon requires careful planning, commitment, and a structured training program. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or new to the world of marathons, a well-designed training regimen is essential to build the necessary endurance and stamina for the 26.2-mile journey. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you train effectively for your 5-hour marathon goal.

Step 1: Assess Your Current Fitness Level

Before diving into a training plan, assessing your current fitness level is crucial. Take note of your running experience, recent race times, and the mileage you’re comfortably running each week. This self-evaluation will help you determine a starting point and set realistic goals for your training.

Step 2: Choose an Appropriate Training Plan

With numerous training plans available, selecting the right one can be overwhelming. Consider your experience, running background, and the time available for training. Look for plans specifically tailored to beginners or those targeting a 5-hour marathon finish. Most training plans span 12 to 20 weeks and include running, cross-training, and rest days to prevent overtraining and reduce the risk of injury.

Step 3: Gradually Increase Mileage

Building endurance is a central focus of marathon training. Gradually increase your weekly mileage, ensuring you don’t add too much distance too quickly. Aim to increase your total weekly mileage by no more than 10% each week. Long runs play a vital role in preparing your body for the marathon distance. Include a weekly long run extending to distances beyond the half-marathon mark.

Step 4: Incorporate Speed and Tempo Workouts

While completing the marathon is the primary goal, incorporating speed and tempo workouts can enhance your overall running performance. Once or twice a week, include intervals, hill repeats, or tempo runs to improve your running economy and pace.

Step 5: Cross-Training and Rest

Incorporate cross-training activities like cycling, swimming, or strength training to complement your running workouts. Cross-training helps improve overall fitness, strengthens muscles, and prevents overuse injuries. Additionally, prioritize rest and recovery days to allow your body time to repair and adapt to the training stimulus.

Step 6: Practice Race-Day Nutrition and Hydration

During long training runs, practice your race-day nutrition and hydration strategies. Experiment with different energy gels, sports drinks, or snacks to find what works best. Staying properly fueled and hydrated throughout the marathon is essential for maintaining energy levels and preventing dehydration.

Step 7: Mental Preparation

Endurance running is as much a mental challenge as a physical one. Prepare yourself mentally for the ups and downs of marathon training and racing. Visualize yourself crossing the finish line, imagine a sense of accomplishment, and focus on staying positive during challenging moments.

  • Start at a comfortable pace and avoid going out too fast.
  • Break the race into segments and focus on one mile at a time.
  • Utilize aid stations for hydration and refueling.
  • Maintain a steady mental focus and stay positive throughout the race.

Mastering The 5-Hour Marathon Race Strategy: Pace, Nutrition, and Mile-by-Mile Breakdown

Completing a marathon within the 5-hour mark is a significant achievement, and to do so, a well-executed race strategy is essential. In this guide, we’ll break down the 5-hour marathon into three parts, discussing the optimal pace, nutrition, and milestones to help you conquer this challenging distance.

Part 1: Miles 0 – 13.1 (The Start)

The first half-marathon sets the foundation for your entire race. It’s vital, to begin with a controlled pace to conserve energy and avoid early exhaustion. For a 5-hour marathon, aim to run at an average pace of 11 minutes per mile during this segment.

You have two options for maintaining this pace:

  • Continuous Running: Maintain a steady pace throughout without taking walking breaks.
  • Run/Walk Strategy: Alternate between running for 10 minutes and walking the last minute into each mile marker. This approach can help you preserve energy for later stages.

Hydration and Fueling: Stay hydrated by drinking fluids approximately every 2 miles. Listen to your body’s thirst signals and drink as needed. Consider consuming a full-calorie sports drink and small portions of food (e.g., fruit, gels, or candy) to supply your body with energy. Aim for 100-200 calories per hour to avoid overwhelming your stomach.

Notable Time Points:

  • 3 miles: 33 minutes
  • 5 miles: 55 minutes
  • 10 miles: 1:50
  • 12 miles: 2:12
  • 13.1 miles (Halfway Point): 2:24

Part 2: Miles 13.1 – 20

Entering the back half of the marathon, you’ll face more challenges, but your earlier efforts to conserve energy will pay off. Gradually slow down to an average pace of 11 minutes and 20 seconds per mile during this segment.

Walking Breaks: Take at least 3 walking breaks to give your legs a chance to recover. Utilize water stations as a natural place to walk while staying hydrated.

Electrolyte Replenishment: If you’ve been drinking plenty of water, consider switching to a sports drink to replenish electrolytes. Alternatively, consume salty food, use electrolyte gels, or take a salt pill. This will help prevent dehydration and muscle cramps.

  • Mile 16: 2:57
  • Mile 19: 3:31
  • Mile 20: 3:42

Part 3: Miles 20 – 26.2 (The Finish)

Entering the final segment, you’ll have 1 hour and 18 minutes to cover the last 6.2 miles. Aim for an average pace of about 12 minutes per mile to reach the finish line within the 5-hour.

Managing Pain: It’s normal to experience discomfort and aches during this phase. However, seek medical attention to prevent further injury if you encounter severe pain, particularly sharp or unusual pain.

Balanced Run/Walk Approach: A recommended approach is the 5/1/5/1 method. Run for 5 minutes, walk briskly for 1 minute, and repeat. During the run portions, aim for an 11-minute pace, and maintain a brisk walking speed (over 20 minutes per mile) during the walk breaks.

Mile-by-Mile Final Breakdown:

  • Mile 21: 3:54
  • Mile 22: 4:06
  • Mile 23: 4:18
  • Mile 24: 4:30
  • Mile 25: 4:42
  • Mile 26: 4:54
  • Finish: 4:56 (4 minutes to spare!)

Final Thoughts: While the goal is to complete the marathon within 5 hours, remember that crossing the finish line is remarkable. Embrace the journey, stay positive, and celebrate your accomplishment, regardless of the time on the clock. Good luck with your marathon, and enjoy the experience of conquering this impressive distance!

In one woman's mysterious drowning, signs of a national romance scam epidemic

By Jim Axelrod , Sheena Samu , Andy Bast , Matthew Mosk , Sari Aviv

Updated on: April 21, 2024 / 11:19 AM EDT / CBS News

The scammer who drained Laura Kowal of her $1.5 million nest egg and sent the widowed healthcare executive on a path that ended with her death in the Mississippi River, hundreds of miles from her western Illinois home, called himself "Frank Borg."

Frank drew Laura into a relationship after she connected to his profile on the popular dating website Match.com. Over months of giddy cellphone calls and in hundreds of florid emails, Frank manipulated her by drawing on publicly-posted details of her life to forge a bond, then induced her to invest with his online trading firm. As her skepticism grew and love waned, he strong-armed her into helping him dip his hands into the accounts of other victims.

"She had all these buckets full in her life, my mom did," said Kelly Gowe, Laura's daughter. "But there was this one bucket that was missing… and that was companionship. ... And that's ultimately where we're at now, is because of that."

kelly-laura.jpg

This increasingly common pattern — a modern spin that combines emotionally exploitative catfishing schemes with fast-moving investment and crypto scams — has served as the leading edge of an epidemic of pernicious scams targeting users of dating apps and websites. U.S. Justice Department and FBI officials told CBS News there is a public account of the toll: more than 64,000 American victims in 2023. But multiple experts told CBS News that those numbers significantly under-represent the true scope.

"They may be embarrassed that they have been victimized in this way," said Arun Rao, who oversees the Consumer Protection Branch at the U.S. Department of Justice. "They may be ashamed. They may be afraid to tell their friends or family."

With so many cases going unreported, he said, it is a national crisis unfolding largely in secret.

The human cost is likely more severe than law enforcement can quantify. Senior FBI officials told CBS News a striking number of cases are ending with victims dying by suicide.

"They shouldn't feel embarrassed or ashamed," Rao said. "These are sophisticated fraudsters who are preying on the human desire for affection. For connection with another person. And they are manipulating [victims] … using sophisticated technology."

Dating sites a "hunting ground" for scammers

A year-long CBS News investigation has found a growing number of federal agents, local police and online security experts believe the law enforcement response has, to date, failed to address the problem. The financial toll of known losses has swelled, from $500 million in 2019 to $1.14 billion last year.

Our investigation has found:

  • Local police officials from across the country are deeply frustrated by the lack of options to address the steady flow of complaints they receive, often from the adult children of divorced or widowed victims who have struggled to navigate the unfamiliar world of dating apps.
  • Federal agents struggle to keep pace with scammers who are often operating in plain sight in West Africa and South Asia.
  • Scammers have had increasing success in leveraging the promise of love to strong-arm victims into becoming unwitting co-conspirators, creating a legal mess for investigators who must decide how to treat victims who have openly committed fraud at the behest of the scammers, helping perpetrators launder funds swindled from others.
  • Law enforcement and security experts from dating and social media sites told CBS News those apps have been a "hunting ground" for scammers, and the industry has struggled to effectively curtail the problem. Several former insiders at the publicly-traded company with the largest market share, Match Group , criticized its record for protecting customers. Match Group CEO Bernard Kim defended the company's performance, telling CBS News: "We invest a tremendous amount of capital, incredible talent on trust and safety. It is the first and foremost top priority for us as an organization."

Victim's daughter says her mother "was endangered"

The tragedy of Laura Kowal touches on every one of those alleged weaknesses, unfolding in ways that now sound painfully familiar to the experts who are immersed in finding a solution to the online scam epidemic.

Hundreds of emails between Laura and "Frank" detail a long con, in which Laura is drawn in with promises of love and manipulated into sending more and more money.

Mark Solomon, president of the International Association of Financial Crime Investigators , said Frank followed a familiar playbook used by scammers to manipulate their victims.

"We don't blame a person that's on the side of the street and gets robbed with a gun pointed at them," said Solomon, who was the first to tell Kowal's story on the association's podcast, The Protectors , produced by Modified Media . "We can't do that to the victims of these frauds and scams either. These are professionals, they do it every single day. They're good at it."

The only anomaly in Laura's case, Solomon said, are the lingering questions surrounding her death.

evidence-bag.jpg

While several local detectives who investigated the final days and hours of her life appear persuaded that she died by suicide, they have stopped short of that formal finding. Her autopsy report, prepared in the days after her body was discovered in August 2020 floating in the river by a couple out fishing, says only that she died by "drowning."

Those who knew Laura best, however, believe the actions of her final hours are so incongruous with how she lived that she may have met her end at the hands of someone involved in the fraud.

Her daughter, Kelly Gowe, said she believes scammers, including the person using the pseudonym "Frank Borg," drove her mother to a point of feeling "like she was endangered. That she was going to die."

"It's the scammers," she said. "It's the criminals behind those emails. It's Frank Borg… this character. He killed my mom. And everyone that is involved in this scam in any capacity, that's moving the money, that's placing a phone call, that's hitting 'enter' and 'send' on an email — they're all responsible for my mom's death."

An eerie letter that Laura left behind, buried in a file drawer and found while Laura was missing, leaves more questions than answers.

"You were right in your judgment of me," Laura wrote to her daughter. "I've been living a double life this past year. It has left me broke and broken. Yes, it involves Frank, the man I met through online dating. I tried to stop this, many times, but I knew I would end up dead."

The reach of scammers has widened, officials say

Over the course of this week, CBS News will tell Laura Kowal's story. And, through her story, the reports will re-examine a problem many in law enforcement now believe has been grossly underestimated.

The head of the FBI's financial crimes sections, James Barnacle, said the reach of the scams has widened as overseas criminals have gained direct access to their targets: lonely Americans seeking a connection through social media and dating apps.

Match Group, the largest company in the online dating space, has tried to keep pace, telling CBS News it is now swatting down 44 spam profiles per minute. "We're working really, really hard every single day to make sure that people are authentic," Match Group CEO Bernard Kim told CBS News. "That's the key to our platform."

An effort to rally a stronger federal approach has a growing number of advocates — among them, Laura's daughter, Kelly Gowe.

Last year, Gowe left her job with a farm supply company and has dedicated herself to sharing her mother's story as a cautionary tale. At a speech to a women's group in Iowa earlier this year, she urged financial institutions and law enforcement to do more to protect victims.

"It wasn't until I learned that I was going to have a daughter of my own that I knew that, one day, she would know the full story of how her grandmother passed away," Gowe said. "I want her to know that her grandmother's story has the ability to educate people and to promote change, and ultimately her grandmother's story can save someone's life. And that's now the responsibility that I carry, to do that."

CBS News investigative reporters Pat Milton, Clare Hymes and Alyssa Spady contributed to this report.

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

journey 5 hours

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Belorusskaya

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

Novoslobodskaya

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Prospekt Mira

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice.  For me, this station resembles a presidential palace.  You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

Elektrozavodskaya

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

' src=

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful

You chose some great stations for this write up! Beautiful details in these stations and would love to visit them sometime. Particularly like the Komsomolskaya station with that yellow ceiling!

Thank you very much. Komsomolskaya seems to be a lot of peoples favourite stations too

Wow! Without the text I would have thought them to be some museum or gallery.

I know exactly what you mean!

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

' src=

Wow, that’s a lot of artwork. I wonder how old some of these pieces are?

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

' src=

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

True. It is like having a free trip to an art museum/gallery. I hope that you can one day visit Moscow and see for yourself.

' src=

Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!

It is true about life in general, we just go from A to B looking directly in front of us instead of around us

' src=

Wow, I would have never guessed that these were stations. The decor is so pretty and not one I’m used to seeing at metro stations. Love the ceiling at The Komsomolskaya metro station.

They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!

Great app but one small but essential thing

I just got this app and I already enjoy it! Though when it says I get free 20 generations, I was hoping I would get a few free generations a day (like 3-5 or something). I was a little bummed out when i see that it’s not the case. So as a suggestion, i would like there be a few free generations a day kind of feature. I’m sure folks would love that. Other than that, I really enjoy this app.

Does Not Work with High Load of Generations

The Niji journey app make my phone hotter than when I’m playing a graphic intensive game like genshin or tower of fantasy. When I begin to do more than 4 generations I only do 3 at a time, my phone gets hot the app basically stops responding. It makes it impossible to look up a previous photo to make generation of it. When you got to your profile it takes 3+ mins to load your list and then once you are there it won’t let you select any of them. The app has more functionality than discord and more options but it’s almost unusable after 10 mins or one visit to your profile page. Please fix this for those who generate high numbers of photos.

Developer Response ,

Hi, Thank you for your feedback. We have been made aware of this issue, and have released some updates to address this. We are also constantly working towards making the app better, and if you are able to help give us more specific information. We can take a closer, and better look.

Pretty good

Mainly, there are no issues that have really messed with the app or the experience. The app runs smoothly, you can see the image progress, you can choose prompts, and add reference photos which is all amazing. HOWEVER, a big issue I run into is when a ‘Job failed to run’ while using a free trial. It takes one of your free generations without even showing a result. We traveled from Canada to Seattle by ferry with a car for $150. After 5 ½ hours, I wished I'd just left my vehicle at home.

  • I travel between Canada and the US often, and I recently took a route that used a car ferry.
  • With two passengers and a car, the trip cost about $150, and it took about five and a half hours.
  • I don't necessarily think having your car adds to the trip, so I'd take a passenger boat next time.

Insider Today

Nearly 400,000 people travel between Canada and the US daily, and one of the best parts of living in Victoria, British Columbia, is its relative proximity to the state of Washington.

It's common for locals to spend a weekend in Seattle to catch a sports game, see a concert, or do some cross-border shopping.

But even though the cities are pretty close, getting there can be a headache if you don't know what you're doing. Victoria, BC , is located on an island, so unless you're flying, you'll need to take a boat.

Under ideal conditions, traveling there with your car takes at least four to five hours. But when you factor in ferry times, potential delays due to weather, border wait times , traffic, and stopping for gas, it can easily become an eight-hour journey.

Recently, a friend and I took the car ferry between Victoria to Vancouver to get to Seattle. Here's how it went, and what you need to know before booking a trip.

There are several options for getting to mainland Washington from Victoria, BC.

journey 5 hours

The Victoria Clipper offers the fastest direct route between Victoria and Seattle, but it's a passenger-only ferry.

If you want to take your vehicle, you'll either need to take the Blackball "Coho" Ferry to Port Angeles, Washington, or BC Ferries to Vancouver and drive two to three hours to Seattle.

We wanted to stop at Seattle Premium Outlets in Tulalip, Washington (about an hour outside of Seattle). And since we'd be stateside, we'd have the opportunity to stop at Trader Joe's to stock up on our favorite American snacks.

Having a car would make both pit stops easier, so we decided to book tickets on BC Ferries.

Tickets vary depending on your vehicle, the number of passengers, and their ages. Vehicles under 20 feet cost 67.40 Canadian dollars, or about $49, each way. But that cost doesn't include the driver or any other passengers.

Adult fares are 19.10 CAD each way, so our total for one way on the ferry was 105.6 CAD.

If you’re traveling on a weekend, make a reservation and get there early.

journey 5 hours

Since we were taking our car, we needed to factor in the driving time to the ferry dock in Swartz Bay, located about 30 to 45 minutes outside of Victoria.

BC Ferries serves travelers from all around Vancouver Island and the lower mainland of British Columbia. Weekends are typically busy, and popular sailings can sell out.

Traffic is also busier on the weekends , so give yourself plenty of time and arrive at least 30 minutes in advance.

I recommend booking a reservation online to guarantee your spot on a specific sailing. Reservations cost an extra 20 CAD, but I think it's well worth it.

Even if you have a ferry reservation, know that there's a chance your ferry can get canceled or delayed due to weather conditions — forcing you to take the next sailing in one or two hours.

There are gorgeous views throughout the ride, which made up for the lack of Wi-Fi.

journey 5 hours

One of the things I love about taking the 90-minute boat from Victoria to Vancouver is the incredible scenery and ocean views . If the weather is decent, I recommend sitting outside.

There are picturesque islands covered in lush forests, and you may even spot a pod of whales or dolphins if you're lucky.

But if you plan on catching up on your favorite shows, download content before the ferry departs. There were no Wi-Fi options on board.

Since mobile reception is also spotty, I used the trip to catch up on work using offline apps and take in the scenery.

There’s a restaurant on the ferry, and it's actually decent.

journey 5 hours

The onboard cafeteria offers everything from coffee and desserts to local specialties, like Nanaimo bars (a classic BC layered treat) and White Spot burgers.

Surprisingly, I don't mind the ferry food, even though it tends to be pretty expensive. If you're not sure what to get, skip the prepackaged salads and get the poutine.

At about 7 to 8 CAD, it's one of the cheapest things on the menu, and it's tasty and filling.

But if you don't want to deal with lines or crowds, you should bring your own meals.

There's pretty much always a line at the cafeteria — on my last trip, I waited 30 minutes to order a burger and a Diet Coke. The dining area is also jam-packed with fellow travelers and has the vibe of a crowded mall food court at sea.

The arrival process is pretty straightforward.

journey 5 hours

The crew makes an announcement asking passengers to return to their cars 15 minutes before docking. That's when I usually sneak in a last-minute trip to the restroom before heading down to the car deck.

We spent about 10 minutes in the car waiting for the boat to dock before driving off.

We made our way to the Peace Arch Border Crossing.

journey 5 hours

The ship docks in Tsawwassen, a small town outside of Vancouver, and it's about a 40-minute drive to the Canada-US border.

This drive always gives me anxiety because you can't predict how long the wait will be.

We were lucky and only had to wait about 20 minutes on this trip. But hours-long queues at the border are common, especially if there's a special event happening in Seattle like a Taylor Swift concert or a Mariner's game.

If possible, avoid driving into Seattle during rush hour.

journey 5 hours

Traffic jams are also common on what should be a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the border crossing to Seattle, especially as you get closer to the city.

There have been previous trips where it's taken me four hours because I got stuck in a gridlock, so I always do my best to avoid getting there anywhere near rush hour.

We opted to stay overnight in Seattle.

journey 5 hours

It's technically possible to go to Seattle for the day via the car ferry, but you'd only have a few hours in the city before turning around and catching the last ferry home at 10 p.m.

I recommend booking a one-night stay at The Edgewater — an iconic Seattle hotel with a storied history of hosting legendary musicians like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pearl Jam.

My room cost 329 CAD, and we loved the incredible waterside views, the central location, and the easy car access.

I kind of wish I didn't have my car in Seattle.

journey 5 hours

Since we stayed in downtown Seattle, we were within walking distance of Pike Place Market , the Nordstrom flagship store, and buzzy dining options in Belltown.

We also spent an afternoon exploring the trendy Capitol Hill neighborhood, located a 10-minute drive from downtown. But we ended up taking an Uber because we knew it'd be easier than finding our own parking on the weekend.

The city has a public transit system that includes a light rail, a monorail, and streetcars, so it's pretty easy to get around without a car.

When I compare the time and money spent, I wish I’d left the car at home.

journey 5 hours

In addition to the roundtrip ferry fare (with corresponding fees and taxes), my friend and I spent about 82 CAD on gas, bringing our total transport costs for the weekend trip to 323 CAD, not including the hotel stay .

I've taken the Victoria Clipper passenger ferry to Seattle for past trips, and although it's more expensive (344 CAD per adult, roundtrip), I found it to be a much more relaxing experience.

Our car-ferry journey took about five and a half hours, start to finish. But on the passenger ferry, I've boarded the boat at 5 p.m. and made it to my Seattle hotel by 8:15 p.m.

As a single woman who'd rather spend her weekend exploring one of her favorite cities than sitting in traffic, the passenger ferry is my preferred mode of transportation.

With that said, the car ferry has its advantages.

If you're traveling as a family or group, it's considerably cheaper than the passenger ferry. A roundtrip for a family of four on BC Ferries costs around 231 CAD, whereas the same trip on the Victoria Clipper would be around 866 CAD.

Additionally, if you plan on doing a lot of shopping or any outdoor activities outside of Seattle, it usually makes sense to have a car.

Humanitarian groups demand safe routes to UK after five deaths in Channel

UN and Council for Europe add voices to outcry as more people drown within hours of ‘cruel’ Rwanda bill being passed

Humanitarian groups have called for new safe routes to Britain after five people died trying to cross the Channel within hours of ministers passing the controversial Rwanda bill .

A child and four adults drowned on Tuesday while trying to reach the UK in a boat from Wimereux, in France . More than 110 people were said to have been on board the vessel when it left the French coastline at 5am.

Despite the deaths, 57 people continued to Britain once the boat’s motor had been restarted, the Calais prefect told the Guardian. The National Crime Agency said it would be supporting the French investigation into the deaths with UK police and Border Force.

Rishi Sunak said the “tragic” deaths showed why his plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda was necessary.

During a trip to Poland, the prime minister told reporters: “We want to prevent people making these very dangerous crossings. If you look at what’s happening, criminal gangs are exploiting vulnerable people. They are packing more and more people into these unseaworthy dinghies”.

“We’ve seen an enormous increase in the numbers per boat over the past few years. This is what tragically happens when they push people out to sea and that’s why, for matters of compassion more than anything else, we must actually break this business model and end this unfairness of people coming to our country illegally.”

Grey sea and boat in distance

Humanitarian groups reacted with fury, condemning the Rwanda deportation policy as “cruel” and arguing it would not stop desperate asylum seekers from making the dangerous Channel crossing.

Wanda Wyporska, chief executive officer at Safe Passage International, said: “Waking up to news of men, women and a child dying in such a harrowing way is devastating. This was entirely preventable.

“This loss of life comes just hours after the government ruthlessly pushed through the cruel Rwanda bill. It won’t disrupt the smugglers’ grip on dangerous journeys, with refugees suffering for this government’s failures. We need safe routes, such as a refugee visa, urgently.”

Enver Solomon, the chief executive of the Refugee Council, said it was “another devastating human tragedy that could and should have been avoided, and for it to happen just hours after the government’s Rwanda bill became law makes it all the more tragic”.

He added: “The only sustainable way to reduce dangerous journeys … is for the government to reduce the need for desperate people to take desperate actions. Instead of hostile, headline-grabbing legislation, we need to see safe routes for those fleeing conflict and persecution, including more options for family reunion, refugee visas, and cooperation with our European neighbours.”

Charlotte Khan, head of public affairs and advocacy at Care4Calais said: “Yet more lives have been lost as a consequence of the hostile environment towards refugees. Each life lost in the Channel is an avoidable tragedy.

“Yesterday, Rishi Sunak had the cheek to use Channel deaths to pressurise the Lords into passing his brutal Rwanda bill. But the responsibility for each one of these deaths lies with his policies. Rwanda won’t save lives. Safe routes will.”

The scheme, which the National Audit Office calculates will cost £1.8m for each of the first 300 migrants deported, also prompted an angry response from the Council of Europe and the UN. Filippo Grandi, the UN high commissioner for refugees, called on Sunak to reconsider, saying the plan set a “worrying global precedent”.

Michael O’Flaherty, the Council of Europe human rights commissioner, urged the UK not to remove refugees under the policy and said the bill raised “major issues about the human rights of asylum seekers and the rule of law more generally”.

Labour said it would ditch the Rwanda policy. Keir Starmer said the deaths were an “absolute tragedy and my heart, of course, goes out to the family members of those who have died. It is a reminder that this vile trade run by criminal gangs costs lives and, sadly, more lives today.”

Talking to reporters in Cawood, North Yorkshire, Starmer said: “There’s no doubt that we have to stop these small boat crossings. There’s no doubt about that. The government has lost control of the borders. But this Rwanda gimmick is not the way to stop it.”

Labour said it would use the money to increase border security and tackle people-smuggling gangs.

The Calais prefect, Jacques Billant, said a rescue operation had been dispatched quickly to reach the boat when it got into difficulty. Six people were taken ashore for treatment by emergency services but “despite attempts to reanimate them, five of them died”.

A further 47 people were rescued from the vessel and helped by police, emergency services and doctors in Boulogne-sur-Mer. Four were admitted to hospital for treatment.

Billant said that “despite this complex and delicate situation”, the 57 people who stayed on the dinghy managed to get the motor running, and decided to continue their route to Britain, under the surveillance of French authorities.

Group of men in front of camera with mics

Jean-Luc Dubaële, the mayor of Wimereux, told BFM TV: “It’s very painful and very difficult to accept. To have 110 people on an inflatable boat is unprecedented.”

More than 6,000 people have made the journey so far this year – an increase of about a quarter on the same period last year. According to the International Organisation for Migration, 10 people had drowned in the Channel in 2024 before Tuesday, plus one lorry death on a Channel crossing.

Matthew Rycroft, the most senior civil servant in the Home Office, who has overseen the Rwanda scheme for two years, has told MPs he did not have evidence to show it would have a deterrent effect that would make it value for money.

The Channel is one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes and currents are strong, making the crossing on small boats dangerous. People smugglers typically overload rickety dinghies, often making them barely afloat as they try to reach British shores.

What you need to know about new overtime rule that will benefit millions

journey 5 hours

Millions of American workers will soon be eligible for overtime pay thanks to a final rule announced by the U.S. Labor Department this week.

The development represents the biggest increase in the federal overtime threshold in decades. Beginning July 1, salaried workers earning less than $43,888 a year will qualify for 1.5 times pay if they work more than 40 hours a week. That’s up from the current ceiling of $35,568 a year.

The threshold will expand again to salaried workers making less than $58,656 on Jan. 1, 2025.

Acting Labor Secretary Julie Su said, in a statement on Tuesday, that the “rule will restore the promise to workers that if you work more than 40 hours in a week, you should be paid more for that time.”

Who will benefit?

The rule will boost wages for many workers in low-wage but salaried occupations — including in hospitality, health care, finance, manufacturing and retail — making them eligible for time-and-a-half pay after working more than 40 hours in a week.

Most hourly workers are already entitled to overtime pay, but non-hourly workers in executive, administrative and professional roles — including some supervisors — are exempt unless they earn less than the threshold set by the Labor Department.

For example, a salaried restaurant supervisor or office worker who makes more than $35,568 but less than $58,656 could now be eligible for overtime pay. The proposed change stands to boost the pocketbooks of millions of the country’s most vulnerable workers, including women, people of color and workers without college degrees.

An Economic Policy Institute analysis of the rule found that 4.3 million more workers will be eligible for overtime pay because of the rule. That includes 2.4 million more women and 1 million more people of color.

Salary thresholds for overtime eligibility will be updated every three years, the Labor Department said, based off wage data.

Who opposes the rule?

Business associations and conservative lawmakers have rushed to protest the rule, saying it could exacerbate inflation, by raising prices and even result in job losses. The National Retail Federation, the National Restaurant Association, and the International Franchise Association are among the rule’s critics.

David French, executive vice president of government relations at the National Retail Federation, said the rule could result in workers losing managerial positions, the ability to work from home and “cause employers to reexamine compensation packages for millions of workers nationwide.”

“This rule is the latest unnecessary and burdensome regulation from the Biden administration targeting small businesses,” said Michael Layman, senior vice president of government relations and public affairs at the International Franchise Association in a statement.

Will the rule receive legal challenges?

Business and trade organizations are expected to challenge the development in court, as they previously did when the Obama administration moved to more than double the threshold. After business groups and states sued over the rule in 2016, a federal judge issued an injunction blocking it. The Trump administration later abandoned the rule, bringing the threshold down to $35,568 a year, its current level.

Senate Approves Aid for Ukraine and Israel, Sending It to Biden’s Desk

The overwhelming bipartisan vote for the long-stalled $95.3 billion aid package capped a tortured journey for the legislation on Capitol Hill. President Biden is expected to quickly sign it.

The bipartisan bill includes $60.8 billion for ukraine; $26.4 billion for israel and humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones, including gaza; and $8.1 billion for the indo-pacific region..

“On this vote, the yeas are 79. The nays are 18. The motion to concur in the House amendment to the Senate amendment to H.R. 815 is agreed to.” “Today, the Senate sends a unified message to the entire world. America will always defend democracy in its hour of need. We tell our allies, we will stand with you. We tell our adversaries, don’t mess with us. We tell the world, we will do everything to defend democracy and our way of life.” “For months, our friends have watched to see whether America still had the strength that won the Cold War or the resolve that has underpinned peace and prosperity literally for decades. Our enemies have tested whether the arsenal of democracy is, in fact, built to endure. Well, tonight, the Senate will send a clear message.”

Reporting from the Capitol

The Senate voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday night to give final approval to a $95.3 billion package of aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, sending it to President Biden and ending months of uncertainty about whether the United States would continue to back Kyiv in its fight against Russian aggression.

The vote reflected resounding bipartisan support for the measure, which passed the House on Saturday by lopsided margins after a tortured journey on Capitol Hill, where it was nearly derailed by right-wing resistance. The Senate’s action, on a vote of 79 to 18, provided a victory for the president, who had urged lawmakers to move quickly so he could sign it into law.

And it capped an extraordinary political saga that raised questions about whether the United States would continue to play a leading role in upholding the international order and projecting its values globally.

“Our allies around the world have been watching Congress for the last six months and wondering the same thing: When it matters most, will America summon the strength to come together, overcome the centrifugal pull of partisanship and meet the magnitude of the moment?” Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the majority leader, said on Tuesday. “Tonight, under the watchful eye of history, the Senate answers this question with a thunderous and resounding ‘yes.’”

In a statement minutes after the vote, Mr. Biden said he would sign the bill into law “and address the American people as soon as it reaches my desk tomorrow so we can begin sending weapons and equipment to Ukraine this week.”

“Congress has passed my legislation to strengthen our national security and send a message to the world about the power of American leadership: We stand resolutely for democracy and freedom, and against tyranny and oppression,” he said.

The House passed the package on Saturday in four pieces: a measure for each of the three U.S. allies and another meant to sweeten the deal for conservatives that includes a provision that could result in a nationwide ban on TikTok. It sent the legislation to the Senate as a single package that required only one up-or-down vote to pass.

Facing vehement opposition from his right flank to aiding Ukraine, Speaker Mike Johnson structured the legislation that way in the House to capture different coalitions of support without allowing opposition to any one element to defeat the whole thing. The majority of House Republicans opposed the aid for Kyiv.

The components of the bill are nearly identical to one that passed the Senate with bipartisan support in February. It includes $60.8 billion for Ukraine; $26.4 billion for Israel and humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones, including Gaza; and $8.1 billion for the Indo-Pacific region.

In addition to the package of sweeteners, which also includes new rounds of sanctions on Iranian and Russian officials, the House added provisions to direct the president to seek repayment from the Ukrainian government of $10 billion in economic assistance. That was a nod to a call by former President Donald J. Trump to make any further aid to Kyiv a loan. But the bill allows the president to forgive those loans starting in 2026.

Nine Republicans who opposed the Senate-passed aid legislation in February supported the bill this time. When Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma changed his vote on Tuesday, this time agreeing to advance the legislation, Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the minority leader, gave him a thumbs-up on the Senate floor.

“Seventy-five percent of the bill, the total funding, stays within the United States,” Mr. Mullin said on Newsmax, explaining his support for the bill. “That’s what a lot of people don’t realize. This goes to our defense industry; this goes to replenishing our munitions.”

Fifteen hard-right Republican senators who oppose aid to Ukraine voted against the legislation. Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, who opposed the measure but was one of three Republicans who did not vote on final passage, argued that Congress was “rushing to further bankroll the waging of a war that has zero chance of a positive outcome.”

“Pouring more money into Ukraine’s coffers will only prolong the conflict and lead to more loss of life,” Mr. Tuberville said. “No one at the White House, Pentagon or State Department can articulate what victory looks like in this fight. They couldn’t when we sent the first tranche of aid over two years ago. We should be working with Ukraine and Russia to negotiate an end to this madness.”

Three liberals, Democratic Senators Jeff Merkley of Oregon and Peter Welch of Vermont, as well as Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, also opposed the measure. They said they could not endorse sending more offensive weapons to Israel when the government’s campaign in Gaza has killed tens of thousands of people and created a hunger crisis there.

“We are now in the absurd situation where Israel is using U.S. military assistance to block the delivery of U.S. humanitarian aid to Palestinians,” Mr. Sanders said. “If that is not crazy, I don’t know what is. But it is also a clear violation of U.S. law. Given that reality, we should not today even be having this debate. It is illegal to continue current military aid to Israel, let alone send another $9 billion with no strings attached.”

But the vast majority of senators in both parties supported the legislation, and Senate leaders regarded its passage as a triumph, particularly given the opposition to aid for Ukraine that had built up in the House.

For months, Mr. Johnson and right-wing Republicans in the House had refused to entertain aid to Ukraine unless Mr. Biden agreed to stringent measures to curtail immigration on the U.S. border with Mexico. When Senate Democrats agreed this year to legislation that paired the aid with stiffer border enforcement provisions , Mr. Trump denounced it and Republicans rejected it out of hand.

Then the Senate passed its own $95 billion emergency aid legislation for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan without any immigration measures, ramping up political pressure on the House to do the same. For weeks, the message to Mr. Johnson from Mr. Schumer and Mr. McConnell had been the same: Pass the Senate bill.

In extensive remarks on the Senate floor on Tuesday before the procedural vote, Mr. McConnell cast congressional approval of the aid package as “a test of American resolve, our readiness and our willingness to lead.” He rebuked the naysayers in his party, criticizing those who, he said, would “indulge the fantasy of pulling up a drawbridge.”

“Make no mistake: Delay in providing Ukraine the weapons to defend itself has strained the prospects of defeating Russian aggression,” Mr. McConnell said. “Dithering and hesitation have compounded the challenges we face. Today’s action is overdue, but our work does not end here. Trust in American resolve is not rebuilt overnight. Expanding and restocking the arsenal of democracy doesn’t just happen by magic.”

Ukrainian officials cheered the impending passage of the bill.

Ruslan Stefanchuk, the speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, posted a photograph on social media of lawmakers holding American flags inside the chamber in Kyiv, in “gratitude to the United States and to every member of the House of Representatives who supported the Ukraine Aid Bill. We look forward to a similar decision from the Senate.”

“The United States has been and remains a strategic partner that stands shoulder to shoulder with the Ukrainian people in our fight against the russian aggressor!” Mr. Stefanchuk added.

The photograph recalled the scene on the floor of the House on Saturday when Democrats waved miniature Ukrainian flags as they voted for the aid bill. They were rebuked by Mr. Johnson and other Republicans, who called it a violation of decorum and said that only American flags should be displayed in the chamber.

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

Chasiv Yar, a small Ukrainian town, has been under relentless attack by Russian forces. Controlling the town  would put them in striking distance of key Ukrainian operational and supply centers.

The United States secretly shipped a new long-range missile system  to Ukraine, and Ukrainian forces immediately used the weapons to attack a Russian military airfield in Crimea and Russian troops in the country’s southeast.

For residents of Ukraine’s second-largest city, daily Russian attacks have escalated fears  but have not brought life to a standstill. Here’s how a battered city  carries on.

Images From Year Three of the War: For all that time, photographers with The New York Times and other news organizations have chronicled the war , capturing a slice of how soldiers and civilians have experienced it. Some images will never leave them.

Nato’s Show of Force: About 90,000 NATO troops have been training in Europe for the Great Power war that most hope will never come : a clash between Russia and the West with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Resuming U.S. Military Aid: Weapons from the support package, considered “a lifeline” for Ukraine’s military , could be arriving on the battlefield within days . But experts say it could take weeks before there is a direct impact on the war . What would $60 billion buy ?

7. Bourneville

Bourneville is the perfect day trip for families , or in fact, anyone with a love of chocolate! The area was created in the late 18th century when the Cadbury family relocated their chocolate factory there.

The family named the area Bourneville after the local river Bourn and added the French word for town ‘ville’. The area soon grew with the creation of a model village similar to that of Saltaire built by Titus Salt in Yorkshire.

In this village, the Cadbury family built housing, schools, parks, and even a village green for their workers to enjoy. This was revolutionary at the time as it meant the workers at the Cadbury factory were well paid and looked after by their employers.

Today you can enjoy a stroll through the leafy streets and parks in this popular area of Birmingham .

You can of course also visit the main attraction in the area – Cadbury World. Enjoy an interactive tour and learn all about chocolate production! 20. Leicester National Space Centre

The National Space museum is an outstanding attraction easily accessible from Birmingham.

The first thing that strikes you about the Leicester National Space Centre is the rocket tower. The tower is 42 m (138 ft) tall and claims to be the only place to house upright space rockets indoors. It is an impressive introduction to the museum! The real star of the show is Sir Patrick Morre Planetarium.

The Leicester Museum has 6 interactive galleries that explore and educate about Space. Our Solar System gallery has an amazing model of the Mars Rover that you can drive. There are enough fun stuff and learning experiences here to keep kids and adults entertained for a good few hours which is why it makes one of the best day trips from Birmingham!

7-hour night closures on SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge start May 13

  • Olympic Region , Communications, 360-357-2600

Crews set to complete bridge's center lock rehabilitation project

SHINE – Travelers who use the State Route 104 Hood Canal Bridge overnight should prepare for a series of overnight closures in May and June as construction resumes on the bridge.

The Hood Canal Bridge will close to all travelers overnight between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. most weeknights over a four-week period.

The first set of overnight closures will begin 10 p.m. Monday, May 13 and continue each night through Saturday, May 18. The closures will continue during most nights each week with the final one scheduled for June 10.

Each night of work is weather-dependent and could be rescheduled. Real time information is available via the WSDOT Hood Canal Bridge web page and the WSDOT app .

SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge closures each night 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • Monday, May 13, through Saturday, May 18.
  • Monday, May 20, through Thursday, May 23.
  • Tuesday, May 28, through Friday, May 31.
  • Monday, June 3, through Saturday, June 8.
  • Monday, June 10.

Due to the nature of the work, the bridge will not open for any traffic, including emergency response.

The bridge will be open to traffic Memorial Day weekend.

During the seven-hour overnight closures construction crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will replace worn shock absorbers on the bridge. The shock absorbers are an essential feature of the bridge that help keep both halves of the span connected. The preservation work will help keep the bridge in good working order.

Brief daytime closures also planned

In addition to the overnight work, crews will also work during the day to replace the center locks that hold the bridge together. However, this work can be done with the bridge open to traffic. It only requires short 30 to 40-minute test openings during weekday daytime hours. This is about as long as a typical inspection opening.

These test openings are scheduled for some time between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. May 6-7, May 24, May 28-29 and June 14.

This is the final phase of the SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge Center Lock Rehabilitation project. The Hood Canal Bridge sits in a salty, corrosive environment and needs continual maintenance and construction. Crews working for WSDOT are refurbishing critical elements at the center of the bridge. This project is necessary to ensure the bridge can continue to operate, serving both vehicle and marine traffic.

  1. Speed Distance Time Calculator

distance = speed x time. Rate and speed are similar since they both represent some distance per unit time like miles per hour or kilometers per hour. If rate r is the same as speed s, r = s = d/t. You can use the equivalent formula d = rt which means distance equals rate times time. distance = rate x time. To solve for speed or rate use the ...
