Airport Outfits To Wear When You Travel 2023

Airport outfits and travel clothes are all I see on Instagram these days thanks to a new-found tradition that has all my fave influencers and celebrities sharing their pre-flight OOTDs. While we're obviously jealous of the far-flung holiday destinations everyone's jetting off to, I'm even more envious of what they're wearing.

Fashion bloggers and stylists seem to hit the nail on the head each time, achieving the right balance between looking comfortable and pulled-together, all while seeming as though they've not even tried. It ties in with the quiet luxury trend – something I've been seeing a fair bit of this year – and the coordinated outfits that have been walking the runways; from Ralph Lauren to Louis Vuitton, Loro Piana to Brunello Cucinelli.

Dressing to the nines is out of the question, especially if you're going long-haul, so put down the heels (yep, even the kitten ones) and look towards your loungewear collection for inspiration. Comfort is king when it comes to airport outfit ideas, but if you're hoping for an upgrade you'll still need to look somewhat put-together. Think matching two-piece set , chunky trainers , gold jewellery and a designer bag .

From night flight-appropriate ensembles, to ones which are ready to be worn to the beach as soon as you land, keep scrolling for the best airport outfits and inspiration.

1. The Cosy-Comfy Airport Outfit

If you're looking for that off-duty model look to wear to the airport, I think I've found it within these four items. Wear the jumper over your vest-clad shoulders when the plane (inevitably becomes stuffy), and the tote in the crook of your arm while you browse duty free.

2. The Plane-To-Pool Airport Outfit

Raring to jump in the pool as soon as you touch down? This knitted set from the new SIMONMILLER x MANGO collection is the easiest, breeziest outfit ever. It'll keep the air con chill off you while you fly, but remain lightweight enough to keep you cool when you step into that abroad heat. Bonus: you can wear your bikini or one-piece swimsuit beneath it for a super speedy sun lounger change.

3. The Quiet Luxury Airport Outfit

Heading straight from the airplane to a five-star luxury Airbnb or hotel? This airport outfit will serve you well. A linen shirt and linen trousers set looks uber chic but is actually quite affordable to pick up. Add the luxe details by way of your accessories , like through this must-have sandals and a tennis bracelet.

4. The Sporty Airport Outfit

If travel is your middle name then a practical, jet-set airport outfit is probably more your forte. This one is ready to sprint to the gate when you are, complete with gym leggings , an oversized hoodie and baseball cap or summer hat for that mysterious, VIP finish.

5. The Ready-For-The-Heat Airport Outfit

If you want everyone to know you're off to somewhere that's really warm, this is the airport outfit for you. You may be a bit chilly at first, but it'll be totally worth it if it means you don't have to de-layer when you reach passport control on the other side.

6. The Influencer-Style Airport Outfit

Take a leaf from all the influencers on the ‘gram and opt for a tracksuit sweater and some cycling shorts as your airport outfit of choice. It won’t let you down in terms of comfort or style, and it'll make for a chic outfit and suitcase pic on your grid. Accessorise with a tote bag that'll hold all of your flight essentials – from book to travel minis – and transform into the perfect beach bag once you've reached your destination.

7. The Night Flight Airport Outfit

Heading somewhere far flung and catching a night flight to get there? You'll be needing a warm and comfortable ensemble to snuggle up in, in that case. My go-to for such outfit is wearing an outfit as close to women's pyjamas as I can get, so some cashmere trousers and a pair of slippers is pretty spot on.

What to Wear on a Long Flight: Comfortable Essentials From Everlane, Lunya, and More

By Andrea Cheng and Madison Flager

Let's face it: When you’re about to embark on a six-plus-hour intercontinental flight and your body is buzzing with anxiety at the thought of potential delays, missed connections, and lost luggage, piecing together a stylish outfit is probably the least of your concerns. Factor in the near-impossible feat of sleeping upright on a plane and tolerating snoring seat mates, and it feels necessary to prioritize comfort on long-haul flights.

While matching sweatsuits are one (beloved) way to go, there are plenty of options in the way of loungewear these days. Pieces made of finely woven knits that feel as soft as a cloud, compression fabrics that prevent swelling, and buttery cashmere travel blankets that you can cocoon yourself in are among the ones we recommend for overnight or otherwise lengthy flights. Below, find 18 brands whose clothes and accessories will make deciding what to wear on a long flight as easy and comfortable as possible, broken down by categories:

  • Performance wear

Loungewear sets

Cashmere and wool basics, elevated basics, plane to office clothing.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Performance wear and athleisure

Lululemon is a perennial favorite for basic black leggings , snag-one-when-you-can belt bags , and comfortable joggers . But don't overlook the brand's tops: Pieces like this oversized cropped crew and the cotton half-zip shown below are made with soft, breathable fabrics that'll keep you feeling good from plane to car to hotel.

Huckberry serves up menswear basics made for the active traveler, including soft yoga joggers and water-resistant workwear-inspired pants that will take you from the plane to a bike ride or beachside stretch session with ease. The brand's bestsellers section is full of pieces you can wear in the air and repeat on vacation, like the 72-Hour Merino T-shirt and The 365 Pant. You can find travel and outdoor gear from brands like Patagonia, Barbour, Marine Layer, and Saturdays NYC on Huckberry's site, too.

You may have heard the Vuori pitch before (the brand is an active podcast sponsor for many popular shows like Smartless and Crime Junkie ): It offers premium performance apparel inspired by the active coastal California lifestyle, and wants to offer a new perspective on the athleisure category as a whole. I admit, the clothing is some of the softest I've ever worn, which certainly sets itself apart from more traditional activewear brands like Nike or Adidas. Try Vuori's joggers, shorts, and super-soft tees for an outfit that feels like pajamas, but looks respectable enough for the airport lounge .

Outdoor Voices

When warm weather is in the forecast, the exercise dress comes back out. Often designed with shorts underneath and a built-in bra, the practical, sweat-wicking one-pieces are a great multi-purpose vacation outfit: Wear one on the plane with a jean jacket layered on top, then break it out again for a pickleball game or afternoon walking around to see the sights. Outdoor Voices makes a comfortable one with adjustable straps and a built-in shorts liner. If a dress doesn't sound appealing, opt for the Zephyr pant—it's made of a lightweight performance fabric that will serve you well in warm destinations. Of course, the brand's classic leggings are a great in-flight option, too.

Image may contain: Clothing, Tank Top, Dress, and Vest

If the only thing that comes to mind when you hear the name Spanx is shapewear, you're missing out. The brand has extended its offerings over the years to include everything from work dresses to jeans and blazers. But for long-haul flights, we're partial to the AirEssentials collection, which has a super-soft, drapey, scuba-like fabric. Shop The Travel Edit for even more style options, including shorts and jumpsuits.

If it's good enough for Oprah, it's got our vote. Cozy Earth's bamboo joggers received the media mogul's official seal of approval in 2020, by way of her Favorite Things list, and after trying them on ourselves, we understand why. The mix of premium viscose from bamboo, acrylic, and Spandex produces a super smooth, cool-to-the-touch fabric that'll make you feel like you're wrapped in your favorite set of sheets. The brand's Stretch-Knit Bamboo Lounge tee and Ultra-Soft Bamboo hoodie are among other bestsellers.

Any physician will tell you that sitting in the same position for long periods of time is bad for you: It limits blood circulation, causes swelling, and increases the risk for blood clots. Movement around the cabin helps keep your blood moving, as does wearing the right garments. Sleepwear brand Lunya has an all-in-one fix with its Restore Travel Kit, which comes with a basic tank, a long-sleeve tee, a pair of leggings, a sleep mask, and socks (former city guides director Corina Quinn is a big fan ). The bundle is neatly packaged in a very practical mesh laundry bag, and each item is crafted from a breathable Pima cotton-blend fabric that promises to help increase blood flow and oxygen levels, ultimately improving circulation.

Friend + Folk

Launched in 2022, Friend + Folk is a woman-owned , gender- and size-inclusive line made in downtown Los Angeles at Bomme Studio , a CFDA-approved, ethical and sustainable production house. The pieces are produced in small batches to reduce waste, and are supremely comfortable—the Joon joggers are a personal favorite of mine, but for a more classic sweatpant, try the Harbor style. Other in-flight staples include the long-sleeve Witter T-shirt and Crosby classic hoodie .

Image may contain: Clothing, and T-Shirt

Spun from the finest goat hair, Naadam’s 100 percent Mongolian cashmere basics are so ridiculously soft, it feels like a luxurious blanket that you can wear out in public—and on transcontinental flights. The built-in perks of cashmere include high breathability, and anti-wrinkle and odor-blocking benefits. The brand's tailored sweaters and hoodies will keep you comfy without looking unkempt.

Image may contain: Clothing, Long Sleeve, Sleeve, Knitwear, Sweater, and Sweatshirt

Former Traveler editor Noah Kaufman calls Ibex's clothing “some of the nicest, most comfortable stuff I've ever put on.” Made of Ibex's signature Merino wool fabric, the clothes are built to curb odor, and the fabric is naturally thermoregulating—meaning you can wear pieces year-round—and smooth against skin (no itchiness here). He's been wearing a pair of ultra-soft joggers around the house, and says they'll make a great addition to any long-haul flight uniform.

Image may contain: Clothing, T-Shirt, and Sleeve

Athleta has plenty of great leggings, workout wear, and athleisure, but if you're looking for something a little more versatile to wear throughout your trip, check out the Brooklyn mid-rise ankle pant. Made with a stretchy, wrinkle-resistant, these pants are comfortable enough to wear on a plane, but have a tailored fit that can be dressed up or down. They're also super lightweight, in case you decide to pack them on the way back home.

Image may contain: Clothing, Pants, Formal Wear, Suit, Adult, Person, Blazer, Coat, and Jacket

Universal Standard

If there's a brand that can get us to wear "real clothes" on a plane, it's Universal Standard. With clothes from size 00 to 40, its mission is to create clothing that looks and feels good on every body, using fabrics like premium Peruvian cotton, soft Italian Merino wool, and French satin-back crepe to do so. The Promenade linen jumpsuit could easily be worn all day long, and the Sally Liquid Jersey shirt dress is a piece you'll wear again and again. As for the jeans, before you shake your head, know that the brand's styles are stretchy, with a truly relaxed, comfortable fit—look to the ComfortDenim collection for the most plane-friendly pieces. If jeans are a no-go (fair), try the Go-Stretch pant for a looser waistband.

long haul travel outfits uk

With its penchant for solid colors (and the occasional stripe) and classic silhouettes, Everlane makes tons of mix-and-match travel essentials . The Cashmere Stroopwafel turtleneck and Dream Pant are some of our readers' favorites, but we'd also point to the Perform legging , Re-Track barrel sweatpant , and Felted Merino half-zip as great long-haul flight pieces.

Image may contain: Sonny Zhou, Blouse, Clothing, Shirt, Dress Shirt, and Pants

Free People

Free People is known for its breezy, bohemian-style clothes, so of course they'd make the kind of pants, coats, and utility suits that are comfortable enough to wear on a plane. The Studio to Street collection and FP Movement collections are filled with layering pieces and roomy pants you can throw on after a workout, though like leggings or yoga pants, they serve many purposes. For overnight flights, we like the Hailee Cardi set. If you're in need of a versatile jacket you can wear on cold planes and chilly fall evenings alike, the loose-fitting Dolman Quilted Knit remains popular and comes in tons of different colorways.

Image may contain: Clothing, Formal Wear, Suit, Pants, Person, Footwear, Shoe, Knitwear, Sweater, and Coat

Banana Republic

If you're not the type to wear loungewear on a plane, no matter the flight time, you've still got options that prioritize comfort. Banana Republic's linen resort pieces fit the mold, with slim-cut and wide-leg pants, button-up short-sleeve shirts , and more options that can take you from the airport to the office, or to the resort pool, depending on how you style them.

Image may contain: Home Decor, Linen, Blouse, Clothing, T-Shirt, Shirt, and Fashion

Versatile and multidimensional, Aday ensures that every single one of its items has more than one feature—the result of working with engineers to source technologically advanced fabrics that can wick moisture, regulate heat, defy wrinkles, resist ultra-violet rays, and so much more. Simply put, Aday's pieces are exactly what you want to wear on a long flight. There’s the technical silk wrap top that not only does all of the above, but can be worn more than one way. The thin strap tank , also made from technical silk, is the perfect layering piece (plus, it has adjustable straps). And finally, to complete the ideal traveling outfit, there’s the super-stretchy elastic-banded pant, which is both quick-drying and wrinkle-resistant.

The maker of many a wardrobe staple, including some of our favorite basic tees , California-based brand Buck Mason offers plenty of thermal tees, sweaters, and button-ups that make great layering pieces on chilly flights. For a classic but slightly elevated sweats look, Traveler 's associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny loves traveling in the brand's cozy sweatpant and crew neck .

Image may contain: Clothing, Long Sleeve, Sleeve, Knitwear, Sweater, Sweatshirt, and Hoodie

Jenni Kayne

Embody the laid-back, California-cool aesthetic with pieces from Jenni Kayne. Her designs are made to last, and often come in soothing neutral tones. You can find comfortable but structured essentials like the polished Rio trouser and the popular Cocoon sweater, as well as cozy accessories like cashmere socks and oversized blanket shawls .

Just booked your summer hols? Before you think about your beachwear looks, airport outfits need some consideration

Krissy Turner

21 June 2023

If you’re lucky enough to be heading to far away climes this summer, your first thoughts are naturally going to turn to what you’ll wear for days lounging poolside, sightseeing days out and evening bar-hopping.

But if you’ve ever sat on an eight-hour flight with a pair of jeans digging into your stomach, you’ll want to read this before you go any further with outfit planning, as your flight look is one of the most important you’ll have to consider over the course of your holiday.

I’d argue it even sets the tone for your whole break. A speedy, easy airport situ means you’re in a good mood as you board, and a comfortable stint watching dodgy movie after dodgy movie over the course of a full day means you’ll exit the plane and begin your summer hols in a good mood too.

So, what should you wear to ensure a lovely long-haul flight? And is there a way to combine fashion and function, I hear you cry? The short answer, absolutely yes.

The luxe co-ord.

If you’re hoping to get an upgrade (and who isn’t) then this is the look to go for. It’s giving ‘I fly long haul all the time’. A matching set takes the stress out of getting ready too, ideal if you’re catching a red-eye or looking for your passport while the Uber’s outside.

Go for a block colour as the minimal vibe adds to the premium feel – white is for the most brave (and business class ticket holders) among us, but camel, navy or teal are slick alternatives. Team with chunky dad sandals and stash a pair of cashmere socks in your hand luggage.

If you don’t like the thought of veering from your usual attire for the sake of a flight, then you’ll be pleased to know there are a few style tweaks to make to your everyday looks that’ll deem them fit for flying.

Your giant Monday-Friday tote is perfect here: you can bring everything from a change of clothes (if you’re heading somewhere boiling) to your clear bag of liquids with ease. Taking off your shoes at security can feel like a chore, so a slip-on pair that are properly stylish is a must, while a trench is an easy-to-stash lightweight layer that you can wear on chilly evenings when you get there.

Swap your usual jeans for leggings and throw a vest on under a shirt for extra protection against aggressive air conditioning.

The elevated loungewear look

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sarah Louise Blythe (@sarahlouiseblythe)

Frequent flyers will head straight to loungewear territory for a seven-hours or more stint. If you have plans to curl up (as much as is physically possible on those tiny plane seats) and listen to a podcast series, there’s no better option than super-soft joggers or leggings.

Soft, cosy layers that aren’t restrictive in any way will allow you to sit comfortably, but stick to a neutral or monochrome colour palette so that you look stylish rather than scruffy.

Add a pair of clean trainers and a leather shoulder bag to elevate the look.

If Insta-ready outfits are your thing, the airport should also be your runway. Wear a jersey shorts set ( Zara and H&M do the best ones) then focus all your attention on It accessories. Think a cap (for incognito vibes), cult trainers like New Balance 530s or Adidas Sambas and gold jewellery.

Your outfit will is technically comfort-first, but with a fashion-forward vibe you’ll definitely turn heads. When you arrive at your destination, you’ll be suitably dressed to head straight out to scope the area.

The boujee tracksuit look.

Forget trainers with a tracksuit. The most boujee flyers among us know that chunky sandals are the ultimate pairing. Trade them for cosy socks once the seatbelt sign is off, and wear a T-shirt bodysuit underneath so that you’re dressed for your destination on arrival.

It’s not just any old tracksuit that’ll do, however. A cult label like Pangaia, Adanola or Frankie Shop is a must, as is barely-there makeup and a designer bag. It’s loungewear with an expensive twist.

A Travel Editor's Best Travel Outfits for Long Flights

@sophiemiura / Instagram

There's a certain art to building the perfect travel outfit. Last year, I spent 203 hours on airplanes jetting from New York to Tahiti, Australia, Finland, Japan, and more as part of my job as an editor and travel writer. When I'm not reviewing new hotels and airlines for work, I try to squeeze in the odd trip to explore under-the-radar vacation spots at my own pace. So trust me when I say, I've had enough practice refining the best travel outfits for long flights.

I have two rules when it comes to dressing for a long-haul flight : It has to be comfortable and something I wouldn't mind being seen in if I bumped into a coworker. With that in mind, I think I've found the best travel outfit formula. Here are the exact items I mix and match on a flight, depending on my mood and the destination. Every item ticks the boxes: They're incredibly well made, stretch, don't rub, are casually stylish, and stand up to the rigors of flight after flight.

Keep scrolling for my must-have travel and airport outfit essentials—accessories included—for the next time you take to the skies.

Holdall Duffle

This is my go-to carry-on for weekend trips. I love the leather straps, waterproof material, and the fact that I'm never asked to check it in if the overhead bins are full. Made out of 14 upcycled plastic water bottles and natural cotton, it gets bonus points for being eco-friendly too.

Durable Carry-On

A recent trip to L.A. revealed that the entire MyDomaine team swears by Away luggage . The carry-on features a hidden laundry bag, not to mention, the hard shell means I never think twice about bringing a bottle of wine back from vacation.

Enclosed Lace-Up Shoes

I prefer to wear these Thousand Fell sneakers if I'm traveling for work and want to look a bit more polished. Lace-up sneakers are a must at airports: I can loosen the laces when my feet swell midair and don't feel gross in socks when I have to take them off to pass through security.

Leather Jacket

I always travel with a leather jacket because it makes my outfit look cool and styled, even if I'm wearing sneakers and leggings. This jacket by Topshop has been on my wishlist for months.

Loose-Fitting Top

We all love Madewell's relaxed basics for traveling. This scoop-neck T-shirt is loose and layers well with a leather jacket and cardigan. The price tag might sound steep for a basic tee but the supersoft Peruvian Pima cotton is worth the splurge.

No-Frills Leggings

These shape-sculpting leggings are my travelwear go-to. They are comfy, silky soft, and have a flattering high waist. Best of all, the fabric is quick-drying, which comes in handy when you spill a drink due to unexpected turbulence—or maybe just clumsiness.

Black Jeans

I prefer to wear leggings, but if I'm lucky enough to be flying in business class, I try to look a bit more presentable. Topshop's Jamie jeans are the only ones I wear on a flight. They have so much stretch and a high waistband that's comfortable even if I feel bloated midair.

Quality Headphones

Screaming babies, loud talkers, and a plane's white noise are no match for these B&O Play over-ear headphones. Not only do they muffle noisy passengers and vessels so that I can enjoy my in-flight entertainment in peace, but they look super stylish while doing so. I don't fly without them.

Opt for noise-cancelling headphones to ensure a stress-free flight.

Parachute's Merino Travel Kit makes coach feel like first class. I find the warm blanket makes it easier to get quality sleep on a flight and sometimes wrap it around myself like a scarf when the cabin is cold. Plus, it comes in a zip-up wool bag that is the perfect travel pillowcase.

Waterproof Tote

I've had this Longchamp tote for over five years, and it's lasted countless flights and adventures. The waterproof outer casing means that the contents are protected from any spills, and it folds up into a flat package to be stored in my luggage when I arrive at the destination.

Personal Handbag

This is the perfect crossbody bag for travel: It's small, but still fits a phone and passport, zips up for safety, is made from durable leather, and can be monogrammed so you'll never mix it up with a stranger's bag.

Whoever came up with the hoary old cliché that it’s the journey and not the destination that counts has obviously never flown long-haul in economy. The days when members of the jet set flew from one exotic idyll to another in airplanes that resembled five-star hotels are well and truly over. At least, they are for 99 per cent of the population. Perhaps one day someone such as Mr Elon Musk will invent a Star Trek -esque teleportation machine to get us to the beach in Bali or the business meeting in New York at the press of a button. Until then, we’re going to have to rely on the following tips to get from A to B in style.

How to choose luggage

long haul travel outfits uk

Luggage  has a long history as a signifier of wealth and status, and many of the world’s most famous luxury brands started out as luggage makers. Today, your luggage has as much to say about you as its contents.  The North Face signals your all-action eco credentials. The classicism of  Globe-Trotter shows that you still pine for a more civilised era of travel. Aesthetics and status signals aside, luggage is a tool for travel and the right piece of kit is essential for a smooth journey. Here’s how to choose the right tool for the job.

Two wheels or four?

Two-wheeled cases tend to have larger, more robust wheels to haul over streets and kerbs. This is better for larger pieces of luggage that will be checked in. On smaller, carry-on cases, four wheels can manoeuvre luggage in and out of tight spaces, such as the aisle of the plane.

Soft case or hard?

Hard cases offer more protection for items such as cameras and laptops. Soft luggage often has expandable compartments and is lighter and easier to store at home. Finally, it’s a question of taste. Some people find hard cases more streamlined and elegant.

Size matters

Always choose the smallest, lightest piece of luggage possible. An overnight business trip? See if you can get everything in a backpack . Even for longer two-week-plus trips, some travellers like to set themselves the challenge of getting it all in hand luggage and then launder their clothes half-way through. Others, quite rightly, would like to have the convenience and choice of more outfits. Checking in luggage also means you don’t have to be at the front of the queue if you’re flying economy.

Choose the right case for your trip

Backpack : a backpack is perfect if you’re going hiking or trekking. It should be big enough for a change of clothes and everything you need for an overnight stay in a city. Your travel rucksack should be made out of a robust but lightweight waterproof material such as nylon canvas and have useful compartments for your laptop and grooming essentials. Some have detachable  pouches on the straps, which can be useful for money and travel documents. The straps should be well-padded for comfort.

Soft holdall: a  holdall works for a weekend in the country or a short city break. It should contain enough room for two nights’ worth of clothes and be robust enough to shove into the boot of a car or overhead locker. Look for something made out of a lightweight but strong material. Some people prefer the classic looks of leather and canvas bags, which, while tough, can be heavy to carry. Nylon has a more contemporary feel and is lightweight, tough and waterproof. Look for useful compartments and multiple pockets so you can organise and separate your packing. Almost all holdalls come with a detachable cross-body strap, which makes it easier to carry.

Trolley case: a trolley case should allow you to glide through airports, train stations and city streets smoothly and quickly and be small and nimble enough to manoeuvre in and out tight spaces such as plane cabins. Some brands engineer the wheels to be smooth and quiet when dragged along the ground. At the very least, insist on 360-degree wheels for maximum manoeuvrability. It should be designed with compartments that easily accommodate work documents, a laptop and tailored clothes. Just as important, it should look smart and elegant in case you’re heading straight to a meeting. At the top end, luxurious leathers in a variety of finishes project classic sophistication, while cases made from polycarbonate or nylon offer a no-nonsense modernist look.

Long-haul case: a long-haul case should have a hard shell in order to protect your belongings, especially fragile items such as camera equipment. The fashion now is for sleek, silver aluminium cases, but polycarbonate cases offer just as much protection and are a little lighter and more flexible. Look out for sturdy 360-degree wheels that can handle the rough and tumble of city streets and kerbs. A decent security system such as a combination lock or strong padlock are a must if you have expensive items. Use Travel Sentry Approved locks so that if your luggage needs to be physically inspected, a TSA master key can be used to open it instead of it being broken open. On the inside, look for sections and straps that will keep items separate from one another, held in place and protected. Some large cases come with detachable laundry bags, which can be useful for long trips.

How to ace airport style

long haul travel outfits uk

There’s a famous picture of  Mr Frank Sinatra getting off a plane in an immaculate Savile Row  suit with a grin as wide as Cheshire cat. Doesn’t he look marvellous? But don’t go getting any ideas. You are not a jet-set icon. You are a put-upon modern traveller trying to get from A to B with some semblance of dignity. Thankfully, in the past few years, travel clothes have come on in leaps and bounds and it is now possible to look elegant and chic without sacrificing comfort and practicality. Here’s how.

Look for clothes that are soft and have a bit of stretch in them. Italians excel at this type of clothing. Boglioli , Caruso ,  Incotex , Barena and  Z Zegna all offer the kind of softly tailored separates that come into their own for modern business travel. Avoid selvedge denim jeans and other items of tough workwear. You’ll also want to give fully canvassed suits and slim-cut shirts a miss, too. Anything too stiff and done up will be uncomfortable.

Think in layers

The temperature can vary greatly when you’re on the road. One minute you’re running for the departure gate, the next you’re on a plane with the air conditioning turned down to freezing. So think in terms of loose layers that you can take off and on easily. A zip-up cashmere jumper (mid layer) with a sea-island cotton T-shirt (base layer) is the kind of luxurious combination that is almost as nice as a first-class upgrade. The perfect top layer: it’s no surprise that the field jacket , originally designed for the American military in 1965, makes the ideal top layer for modern travel. Its myriad pockets are endlessly useful and it can be worn over a travel blazer ,  sweatshirt or sweater .

The perfect mid layer: navy blazers can do double duty in both formal and casual situations and have lots of useful pockets for travel documents. The current trend for soft tailoring is especially helpful for travel. Travel blazers from Z Zegna, Aspesi ,  Arc’teryx Veilance or  Paul Smith are made from wool that is crease-resistant and stretchy. You can go to sleep in these jackets and still wake up boardroom-ready.

The perfect base layer: a knitted  polo shirt – wool and cashmere in winter and cotton for summer – by John Smedley , Loro Piana , Incotex or  Mr P. is smart enough under your blazer, but also laid-back enough for a casual look. Layer the collars over your lapels for a louche touch.

Choose shoes that can be taken on and off easily, such as Chelsea boots , slip-on sneakers ,  loafers or boat shoes . There is now a slip-on shoe for almost every occasion, so you won’t need to sacrifice style for practicality, which is especially important if you’re travelling for business. Wear your heaviest shoes for the journey to save on luggage weight.  Loro Piana Open Walk boots are elasticated and versatile enough for a wide variety of situations and events.  Gucci horse-bit loafers offer comfort with a touch of glamour. Look to  Vans for slip-on sneakers that are both hardy and lightweight or  Common Projects for something a little sleeker. One of the sneakers of the moment – the  Balenciaga Speed Sock – is a slip-on that is enviably stretchy, which makes it a great travel companion.

Avoid anything with metal, such as belts and buckles, and  trousers in stiff, hard-wearing fabrics, such as jeans. Lots of chinos and flannel trousers now come with elasticated waists and drawstring fastenings for an elegant but still comfortable look, which are ideal for business travel. If you don’t need to head into a boardroom straight from the plane, sweatpants are now perfectly acceptable for flights. Grey flannel drawstring trousers from  Officine Generale and Z Zegna bridge formal and casual with elegance and ease. As well as being comfortable and soft, the drawstring has the added benefit of not requiring a belt. If you’re not quite ready to go down the drawstring route, consider trousers with a small percentage of elastane mixed into the fabric.

How to survive the flight

long haul travel outfits uk

Stay cosy, distracted and, if possible, sleep. That’s the key to making all those hours melt away.

Cashmere socks and hotel slippers

Little jets of ice-cold air can leak into cabins, which makes your feet feel cold. That’s why airlines often offer a complimentary pair of socks , which are often not very nice. Ensure that, at the very least, your feet travel in first-class luxury with your own thick cashmere socks. A fresh pair of  slippers from the hotel where you last stayed will make the walk to the bathroom a little more comfortable, especially when your feet invariably swell. On no account should you walk around the plane with bare feet as the floor will be filthy.

Cashmere blanket and eye mask

You deserve better than the threadbare polyblend rag the airline provides. A travel blanket by  Armand Diradourian can do triple duty as a pillow, blanket and scarf. Wrap it snugly around you and put on a cashmere and silk eye mask , also by Armand Diradourian. There now, you’re practically in first class.

Earphones and content

No  headphones will ever totally cancel out the incessant hum of a plane or the sound of a child’s cries, but an over-the-head pair of headphones by  Bang & Olufsen will at least afford some relief. Download your favourite shows and music before the flight. Most streaming services will let you download onto your device for a limited period of time.

Drink lots of water

Humidity on board a flight can be as low as 12 per cent, which is about the same as in a desert. A mere three hours in the air means your body will lose about 1.5 litres of water. So drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and diuretics such as tea and coffee. It can be a chore to ask the steward to bring you water all the time, so bring your own flask or water bottle. To save space, choose a collapsible one.

Spritz your face

Just as importantly, you’ll need to start your skincare regimen mid-air to stop it becoming dull, dry and irritated when you land. Conditions are so dry on a flight that your normal moisturiser won’t work because there’s not enough humidity for it to bind to. Before applying your moisturiser, use a spray that contains humectants, substances that act like little sponges and help the skin retain moisture. Look out for products such as Allies of Skin ’s Triple Hyaluronic Antioxidant Hydration Serum, which, as the name suggests, contains hyaluronic acid, a humectant. Better still, a spray of Aesop ’s Immediate Moisture Facial Hydrosol, which not only feels refreshing on an arid flight, but also contains rose petal, bergamot peel and chamomile bud to invigorate and revive the senses.

A long-haul flight is a good time to indulge in a 20-minute face mask treatment that moisturises and lifts that dull and papery complexion. An  M.E. Skin Lab Plasma 27 mask or  111Skin Rose Gold Brightening Facial Treatment Mask will not only rehydrate skin, but will firm up and brighten your complexion, which will become dull and lifeless from lack of humidity and cabin pressure. In-flight skincare is essential for business travellers who have to head straight into a meeting from the airport.

Sun protection

UV rays can be particularly intense when you’re flying because you’re physically closer to the sun and it can leak into the cabin through the windows. So be sure to get adequate protection using an SPF30 sun cream. And avoid opening the window blind.

What to wear on a long haul flight

What To Wear On A Long Haul Flight – For A Comfortable Journey!

I love people watching at airports, not only do you see some of the best of humanity at the departure and arrival gates (think Love Actually), but it’s also great fun seeing how differently people dress to travel. There are the business suits, the ladies in super fashionable, super impractical outfits – complete with six-inch heels, the surfer dudes who look like they’ve just walked off the beach, and I’ve even seen one person walking around Heathrow in their pyjamas! I, however, travel with comfort in mind, especially when I’m flying long-distance. So I thought I’d share my personal recommendations for what to wear on a long-haul flight if you want to be comfortable and cosy…

It doesn’t matter what time of year you’re travelling, I recommend taking a scarf. Depending on where you’re seated on the plane you might find yourself blasted by aircon – refreshing for the first 10 minutes when you’ve been somewhere tropical, but a couple of hours into a long-haul flight you’ll have a chill in your bones.

They’re also multipurpose – you can squish them up to use as a nice pillow if you want to have a snooze, or even use them as an eye mask if you need to block out some light and noise to help you get some rest.

I love H&M for scarves – they do a lovely basic black one that is perfect to keep a draught off your neck, but for those who, like me, live in a perpetually semi-frozen state, you cannot beat their large thick scarves . They’re super soft and warm and I wouldn’t be without mine in winter.

T-shirts, cardis and jumpers

For longhaul travel comfort, the answer lies in layers. You want to be prepared for the climate at your final destination, but need to potentially deal with a cold starting base and heavy aircon in the airport and onboard your plane.

My answer is to layer up – I start with a vest top ( H&M Basics are great for these), followed by a really thin light t-shirt for when I arrive (usually SE Asia you see), then I finish off with an oversized hoodie to snuggle up in.

Jogging bottoms or yoga pants

I’ll admit that when I’m travelling in comfort I don’t look particularly glamorous, but damn, I look a lot happier than that women in the row in-front of me with super tight trousers, pointy shoes and a pretty little tank top!

Depending on how much you feel the cold, in my opinion, the most comfortable options for bottoms are thick joggers or cotton yoga pants. Again I usually go with loose fitting men’s joggers – don’t get legs with elasticated cuffs as they’re not good for circulation – from Superdry but I also love my H&M loose fitting yoga pants . They’re light and loose fitting, perfect for comfortable travelling!

Compression tights

Yup, sorry but I’m gonna be practical and health conscious now! As someone who’s had a blood clot (something I wouldn’t wish on anyone) I never fly without compression tights. You might have have picked up ‘flight socks’ from the airport, but these don’t do half as good a job as tights, plus they’re a might more uncomfortable.

Compression tights will support your entire lower body, helping your blood flow, which in turn will lower your risk of a DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and also stop your legs from swelling. Seriously, they make a massive difference to how your legs feel after a long flight so they’re something I recommend to everyone!

What you want when you travel are loose fitting, lightweight shoes. Feet swell when you fly long haul, so you want to make sure you’ve got room to wiggle your toes and not find your shoes too constrictive.

And finally…Fluffy socks!

What are your recommendations?

So there you have it – that’s how I do comfort when I fly. What about you? I’d love to know if you have your own go-to items for long-haul travel, if you wear similar things to me or put more of an effort into dressing up when you fly! Share your thoughts with me via the comments below!

These are great tips – I never think of taking a scarf unless it’s already cold weather, so I’ll try to remember that one.

Personally I usually travel in jeans so it’s one less thing to pack (I never go anywhere without jeans) but know that some people find them uncomfortable, especially skinny jeans! The other thing that can be a good idea is to wear shoes that easily slip on and off, like Toms, in case they have to be taken off at airport security – something else I need to invest in!

Yeah , I wear jeans a lot of the time, but never when I fly weirdly.

Toms are super comfy – I wear them all the time when Im actually away, but I find my feet swell too much to wear them on the plane! 🙁

Alex - My Life Long Holiday

I can never bring myself to dress casual for a flight, it’s like I’m so excited for the trip I just have to wear my sunday best! Haha. I love the scarf recommendation though – that’s one I always forget about but could really do with as I’m never warm on a flight, plus the fluffy socks too – good ideas! #mondayescapes

Lol, you can at least get away with a smart scarf I guess! (and sneak on the fluffy socks when no-one’s looking… 😉 )

Bryna | Dotted Line Travels

I also dress for comfort on long haul flights. My go to for pants are workout leggings since they’re so stretchy. Also, although it’s not technically something to wear, I can’t go without my neck pillow on long haul flights. I pretty much wear it all flight long and it makes so much difference in terms of comfort!

Oddly I’ve never used a neck pillow, I really should invest in one I guess!

You and I must be kindred travel spirits, as I usually wear the exact same things! The scarf works too as a blanket for my little girl. I usually wear my slip on Toms on airplanes, but I love the idea of the shoes you mention. they look very comfortable and stylish as well

Ha ha! I usually use my scarf as a blanket too! Toms are also a great option, I have to agree…

Claire at Tin Box Traveller

Oh my, I want to slip into this outfit now! Comfort is definitely the way forward. I always wonder if those ladies in the heels change in the loos once they get on the plane??! #MondayEscapes

I know, right?! Thing is I’ve always been one for comfort over style…

Lyn @ A Hole in my Shoe

I’m with you, dress for comfort on a long flight and a scarf so useful. The only other thing I’d add for a long flight would be a neck pillow. I will try your recommendation for the compression tights too, sounds way more comfortable than the socks.

They’re still not the most comfy thing in the world, but way better than the socks! Also, your legs will feel so much better for wearing them once you’ve landed and they’re off! 😉

scots2travel

Definitely scarves or a pashmina. Somehow, on a long haul flight you can find 20 uses for it, if you’ve got kids make that 45! #FarawayFiles

Ha ha, they’re a godsend, huh?

I’ve totally converted to a long cardigan and leggings for a long haul flight. It’s not worth the discomfort of wearing jeans! #FarawayFiles

Ooh I like your thinking. I’ve treated myself to this amazing chunky cardi from Fat Face. Might have to try that out on my next flight…

Comfort is king! Lululemon have a new range of yoga pants that I’m obsessed with, I actually now can’t wear anything else they are so comfortable! #farawayfiles

Ha ha, I love it when you come across something like that you want to wear all the time!

The compromise between style and comfort is always a tricky one. I never get it right. Hardly ever wear tights in public because I’m nervous about my thighs. But have now found winter and summer versions of black stretch trousers that are not quite tights, that I use for flying. Black goes with everything. A scarf is a good idea – I’m always cold as well. Havn’t tried compression tights a go, it would be good to arrive and not have swollen ankles, plus the added bonus of no clots! Thanks for the post and the discussion 🙂

Agree that black does go with everything! Try the tights out – let me know what you think… x

Clare (Suitcases and Sandcastles)

Great tips here. I’m like Alex, I want to look a bit glamorous when I travel but being comfortable is really important too. I always take a pashmina and use it to curl up in or as a pillow, like you say, and comfy socks are a must. I’ll often wear boots with a heel at the airport then take them off as soon as I’m on the plane. Thanks for sharing on #FarawayFiles

Pashminas seem to be a go to item for plane travel it seems. I can understand why!

Sarah Christie

A scarf is so useful isn’t it? I always travel with wraps and scarfs as you never know when you need one! And also always have a pair of fluffy socks in my case ha ha thanks so much for linking up #MondayEscapes x

Fluffy socks for the win! 🙂

Corey | fifi +hop

I’m with you on many of these tips as I hate to be cold!! I always pack a scarf too. Something I’ve been in the habit of doing is wearing slip on/off shoes since all the airports in NY make you take them off. Thanks for linking up with #farawayfiles

Yeha slip on shoes are great for airport security, but also useful on the plane too I think!

Yes to comfort! 😀

Ha ha, glad you agree Hayley! 😉

I hate wearing a constricting bra on a long flight! Instead, I wear a comfortable stretchy camisole with some support. It also adds an extra layer of warmth.I also bring along comfy slippers that look like ballet flats, but are soft and easily fold to put in your carry on. You don’t want to step in anything wet in the bathroom!Always bring noise canceling headphones or ear plugs.

Too true Kathleen – good idea about those slippers, i’ll have to look into them!

Erica Baker

I love reading the travel blogs, such useful information. I’m a ‘grey’ solo female traveller and have tried various garments for long haul flights. I’m with you regarding a scarf or pashmina, an absolute must. Nowadays, I wear leggings, a Rohan tunic dress, a hoodie, flight socks and Birkenstocks (I know the sandals & socks are not a great look!!). As mentioned by Kathleen, you cant pad to the bathroom in socks, particularly on long hauls when the toilets get worse as the flight gets longer! Birkenstocks are really easy to slip on and off. Just before I land I whip my flight socks off. I also use a neck pillow & noise cancelling headphones.

I see your thinking re the slip-ons, those long-haul toilets are never nice! And totally agree with the noise cancelling headphones they’re always in my carry on!

What to Wear On A Plane

Written by: Niki Landry

Table Of Contents

Over the last few years, I’ve developed a sort of formula for long-haul trips. I know the clothes I prefer to wear from my travel capsule wardrobe , I have my electronics and airplane toiletries readily available, and my water bottle is full before boarding the plane.

These are the small steps I take to make my airport and plane experience tolerable, if not enjoyable. It all begins with my outfit, though. If I’m wearing the wrong clothes, it can throw everything out of order. Wear these suggested outfits on the plane or pack individual outfits in each packing cube as shown in this video!

To help you plan what to wear on a plane, I’ve put together 5 airplane-friendly outfits that work well for long-haul trips.

Casual-Chic Outfit

My first outfit involves leggings, some cute espadrilles, and a chic, yet practical backpack. I try to balance fashion with the need for practicality as much as possible. Here’s a quick breakdown of the essential items:

what-to-wear-on-a-plane

Shop Sizes XXS-XXL: Nordstrom

Zella Live In Leggings (Reader’s Choice!)

Our readers’ all time favorite style to wear at home and while traveling is the Zella Live In leggings , available in sizes XXS-XXL .

I don’t leave home without a pair of black leggings ; in fact, I am usually wearing them out the door. They are the ultimate in comfort and my favorite bottoms to wear on planes.

The dark color helps conceal any mishaps or spills, the stretch is perfect for extended periods of sitting, and they keep you warm when the plane inevitably becomes freezing mid-flight.

You can also find out more in our Zella leggings review !

Shop Sizes S-3X: Amazon

SSOULM Peplum Top

I paired these leggings with a comfy yet classic peplum top and a lightweight open cardigan . A peplum top is a terrific basic that has flair and can be dressed up or down. The one pictured above by SSOLUM is available in sizes S-XL and 1X-3X .

Both the peplum and a cardigan would pair well with any number of bottoms once you get to your destination.

Sam Edelman Verona Flat

The adorable Sam Edelman espadrilles are easy to slip on and off at security. Plus, they are a nice closed-toe option for warmer weather. Just give yourself enough time pre-trip to break them in.

Longchamp ‘Le Pliage’ Backpack

My go-to bag is the Longchamp backpack which is well loved by TFG readers and by me! It’s nylon, so quite durable, yet the leather trim adds a stylish finish and it fits all my airplane essentials like a tablet and a small toiletry kit to freshen up.

And once I land I can use it as my day bag!

Here’s the full example of the outfit, with some suggested color ideas:

Summer-Chic Outfit

My second outfit is geared towards more warm-weather travel, so I will wear some versatile items that will double as my travel clothes. This includes a maxi dress , cute sandals , and a tote . Here’s a quick breakdown of the essential items:

what-to-wear-on-a-plane

Shop XS-XL (Regular and Petite): Nordstrom

Loveappella V-Neck Jersey Maxi Dress

A comfy tank maxi dress is the perfect base for a long-haul flight. Its unrestrictive shape and soft fabric allow you to stay covered and feel fresh for the whole ride. The one pictured from Loveappella comes in regular and petite sizing, from XS-XL .

These are some of our readers’ favorite maxi dresses !

Shop Madewell: XXS-XXL |  1X-4X

Madewell Denim Jacket

When I know sunnier skies are waiting for me, I go for a light jacket like this one from Madewell. I always wear or hold my jacket on the plane. It doubles as a makeshift blanket during nap time. The one highlighted comes in sizes XXS-XXL and 1X-4X .

I will also layer a t-shirt over a sleeveless maxi for extra warmth–and to make my bag a little lighter. (Here are some tips on how to layer clothes .)

what-to-wear-on-a-plane

Vionic Rest Kirra Backstrap Sandal

For shoes, I will wear some strappy sandals that have a pop of color, like silver or metallic but can still act as neutral. These ones from Vionic are sleek, yet their orthotic arch support makes them perfect for walking around at my intended destination.

I love a great handbag, and the Longchamp tote has that durable nylon, good storage space (I use a purse organizer ), and is super stylish!

Lounge-Chic Outfit

When planning your outfit for a long travel day, the focus should be comfort, but you also want to put a little effort into looking polished and presentable, which is why the third outfit is a nice balance of lounge pants and some fun contrast with a leather backpack. Here’s a quick breakdown of the essential items:

Shop Sizes 0-20: Lululemon

Lululemon Pants

These lounge pants make up the perfect laid-back plane outfit with style. They have a drawcord that moves with you, clever hidden pockets to store small items, and a waistband that’s soft against skin. I love them! (and so do many TFG readers). Lululemon offers these pants in sizes 0-20 .

Urban-Chic Outfit

When you’re planning what to wear on a plane, keep in mind that it’s best to avoid tight-fitting clothing while sitting for extended periods of time. Speaking of tight fitting, my fourth outfit does consist of jeans but they are stretchy and I pair them with a cozy cardigan , and ankle boots . Here’s a quick breakdown of the essential items:

Shop Sizes 0-18: Amazon | Moosejaw | Prana

prAna Kayla Jean

If you like to wear denim, opt for looser-fitting boyfriend jeans or a stretchy comfortable pair such as this style by prAna . They won’t constrict movement on board but can be wearable for sightseeing or dressed up with flats for a night out.

You can grab these jeans in sizes 0-18 .

Shop Sizes XS-XL: Nordstrom

Barefoot Dreams CozyChic Lite Circle Cardigan

A lightweight cardigan is versatile as a cover for warmth on the plane, but to add some interest to an outfit once you’ve landed. To layer, you can add a comfy tee under your cardigan. T-shirts are the basics at the core of every wardrobe. If chosen carefully, they can look stylish, go from day to night, and be worn from the city to a mountain.

Shop Sizes XS-3X: L.L. Bean

L.L. Bean Pima Tee

Better than basic, this  L.L. Bean Pima t-shirt  has both comfort and style, for both travel or hanging at home. Made of Supima® cotton, it’s said to be the softest type of cotton, and dries quickly, which is ideal during a trip. With two-way stretch, it gives when you move. Best of all, they come in a range of sizes, including petites and plus.

This comfy and versatile tee is great for travel! Here’s what our readers recommended as the best t-shirts for women .

Blondo Villa Waterproof Ankle Boot

Always try to wear your heaviest or bulkiest shoes on the plane; it may be your boots. I swear by Blondo Villa ankle boots . They are so easy to wear on a plane and are sturdy against rain while looking absolutely chic!

When flying, you can always slip them off and wear compression socks to help soothe your legs for the duration of the flight.

The Blondo Villa ankle boots are such a reader and editor favorite, we did a review on them!

Travelon Anti-Theft Cross-Body Bucket Bag

If I have a separate backpack with me, I’d take some that’s more like a purse. The Travelon bucket bag is sleek and super functional. With locking compartments, a slash resistant body and shoulder strap, and RFID blocking technology, I feel safe when disembarking, and can use this as my main purse.

You can also look for more ideas in our best crossbody purses post!

Cozy-Chic Outfit

You’ll notice that in all of these outfits, the legs are covered. That’s for two reasons: airports and planes are always cold, and you can keep your luggage light by wearing some of your bulkier clothing on the plane. Hence, my fifth outfit entails just that, a jacket to snuggle up in, along with comfortable leggings , and must-have flats. Here’s a quick breakdown of the essential items:

Shop Sizes XS-4X: J.Jill

J.Jill Slim Leg Wearever Pant

This ensemble, with easy to wear pull up pants by J. Jill, is the perfect alternative to leggings or jeans. Stretchy but tailored, these pants will get a lot of use when you arrive at your destination.

Voted by TFG readers as some of the most comfortable dress pants for traveling. One reader shares that her pair is “super comfortable,” while another one says that she simply “loves them.”

Shop Sizes S-3XL: Amazon

EIMIN Ruched Draped Top

I like to pair this with a stylish ruched drape top that’s comfortable and soft. And I can pair that later with other bottoms.

This blouse by Floria is available in sizes S-3XL .

Shop XS-3X: Amazon

Cole Haan Packable Hooded Rain Jacket

I pair those above items with a packable Cole Haan rain coat that has a cute bow on the back, a removable hood, and a trench coat look that’s classic!

The highly popular coat comes in regular and petite sizing, from XS-XL , and in plus sizes 1X-3X .

Hi Nikki, Are there any plans to update this article with links that work? Many of these styles are no longer available and I’m sure there are current options that you’ve found since? I realize that links get outdated quickly and that’s the issue with great/helpful articles like this but an update every few years would be so helpful and appreciated.

Alex

Hi Linda, thank you for your comment! We are currently working to update all our articles to give you the best up to date advice and content, hope this helps. Happy travels!

How about for business trips? I hit the ground running and leggings just aren’t an option. Do you know of any decently priced work-wear and comfy flats that are good for travel?

I am going to D.C and I do not know want to wear on the plane. What would be the best thing to wear on the plane, and still look good?

Sophie

Hi Alex thank you for the advice! However, I am still a bit stuck in what to wear tomorrow (1 hour and 50 minutes long). I normally wear leggings so if you haven’t replied today or tomorrow morning (I don’t mind I am late anyway) I will wear them. Sophie X

Hi Sophie, for some other ideas for outfits for flying in, have a look at this post: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/airplane-outfit/ The best tip is to wear what you feel comfortable wearing!! Have an amazing trip! 🙂

Catherine

I’m cold at the best of times so on planes I’m freezing so I wear lots of light, long sleeved, crew neck layers and a light hoodie. I have a four-pocket jacket which holds all my essentials and even my Kindle! For my next long-haul flight I’m planning to wear my heavier shoes to travel in but clip my Crocs flats to the outside of my bag so I can slip them on and off for walking about the plane. For Christmas I got a lovely purple-check blanket scarf which will do as both a scarf and a blanket!

Hi Catherine, that is great advice, thank you for sharing it! 🙂

Kelly

What would be a good travel outfit if you are going to Aruba in July?

alex

Hi Kelly, you can find some tips in our Aruba article: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-pack-for-aruba/

Lindsey

I find I usually wear jeans on the plane, as they are usually my heaviest clothin item. I would love to wear the leggings outfit above, but I haven’t quite yet figured out how to lighten my load when packing jeans.

That’s a good point! If I’m tight with weight in my suitcase I’ll wear the jeans on the plane. If I have a little room, I’ll go for the leggings 😉

Daphne

Thank you for this most informative article. I leave South Africa in a couple of weeks for South America and New Zealand.

Yoga pants or stretch denim – anything stretchy is comfortable. And always a shawl that can double as a scarf, and triple as another blanket layer on areas of your body that get particularly cold (e.g. knees or neck).

Travel Fashion Girl

Great tip! Thanks Cynthia 🙂

I also find comfortable clothing key on long flights (well any flights really!). Thanks for the suggestions

Comfort is key!

TANYA

I found this post particularly interesting because I have two big trips this summer. I have one east to west coast Canada early morning flight, and another red-eye to the UK. To endure these long and uncomfortable flights these suggestions have been very helpful and I’ve already made a few purchases based on this list. I also came across HUE Travelista leggings which have side pockets that can be added to the list. Thanks!

So glad you found this post useful Tanya 🙂 Those leggings sound awesome too!

Jessica

So glad I read this! Preparing for return flights to Dublin from Vancouver in January with a connection so this is going to come in really handy along with the Winter Signature Essentials packing list.

Glad you found it useful 🙂 Have an awesome time!

Wesley @ Library Educated

Having a few go-to pieces for airline travel always makes me feel like there’s one less thing I have to worry about when traveling. Jeggings, check. Cute cardigan, check. Comfy tshirt, check. Least uncomforatble bra I own, check. 🙂

Exactly! It makes all the difference 🙂

Cammie

10 Tips on What to Wear on a Long-Haul Flight

Tip #1: wear comfortable clothes.

The days of dressing up to fly are gone.

Being fashionable is lovely, but on a long-haul flight, what is most important nowadays is to be comfortable.

So wear the sort of clothes that do that for you.

Your favorite jeans are something that you love wearing, you can pair them up with almost anything and they are like an old friend, but are they right for this situation?

Being constricted in any way on a plane flight is something to be avoided.

So if they are not as comfortable as you would like, choose something like joggers, khaki pants, or leggings.

Okay, they may not be the height of fashion, but we’re being practical here, right?

And make sure that whatever you wear has stretch and give and doesn’t hug your skin.

Tip #2: Pick natural fabrics

If possible, always use breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and wool.

They will wick moisture away from your skin and will dry quicker than synthetics.

Tip #3: Don’t forget a lightweight jacket

Don’t forget to pack a lightweight jacket for the plane, even if it’s summer and you are traveling to a hot weather destination.

There will be air conditioning in areas of the airport and inside the cabin of the plane, so it’s sensible to have something available to put on.

If you can avoid a heavy coat, do so. They add an awful lot to your weight and they are space hoggers in your suitcase.

Tip #4: Layer up

A clever idea is to wear clothing that you can layer so that if you do find yourself too cold or too warm at the airport or on the plane if you have a jacket, a t-shirt, or a sweatshirt/cardigan, it’s simply a matter of adding or removing an item of clothing.

Tip #5: Bring a scarf

Don’t overlook this one, it’s seriously a good tip.

As well as the obvious, you can use a scarf as a blanket to warm you up, as a travel pillow and you can use it to cover your mouth to protect your throat against cold/ dry air during the flight.

Tip #6: Keep it simple

To get through airport security faster: wear something easy to remove (shoes with laces are not the best idea or complicated clothes to tie and untie).

Don’t wear too many metal accessories (belt, jewelry: necklaces, bangles, earrings, metallic sweaters, umbrella….).

Keep it simple, that’s the key to all of this.

Not only will you be saving time, but it’s also more comfortable and you won’t have to worry about forgetting to pick all the things you had to remove at the security checkpoint.

We already carry enough when we travel, so in this case, less really is better.

Tip #7: Easy to slip on and off shoes

It’s best to wear ones that are flat and comfortable and that are easy to slip on and off: sneakers, loafers or TOMS slip-on shoes.

And don’t forget that you may need to walk a lot at your destination airport and your feet may well be swollen after flying.

So high heels and tight shoes are not something you want to be even considering.

If you are tempted to wear sandals or flip-flops that’s ok, but your feet might end up a lot colder than you’d like or thought that they would be.

And, at the risk of touching on the crude, going to the lavatory/washrooms, can be a gross experience if you have exposed feet.

That fluid on the floor is likely to be something a lot more unpleasant than just water.

Tip #8: Bring socks

They might be useful at the TSA screening when you remove your shoes and during the flight to feel warmer.

Compression socks are the best if you are going to be seated for a long period of time to avoid blood circulation problems.

Tip #9: Bring a backpack

A backpack or a big tote bag to keep all your travel essentials and technology gear.

The more compartments and pockets, the better.

I always prefer a big bag rather than a small mini purse that I can’t fit very much of anything.

Below is my list of long-haul travel essentials . Check it out, because it will make a big difference to your flying experience.

  • Sleeping kit: Travel pillow, eye mask, earplugs
  • Beauty products: Face mist, 8-hour skin protectant, hand cream, fresh fragrance, lip balm, face wipes.  Look for samples or travel sizes of your favorite products.
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Magazines, your favorite podcast, ebook or something to get distracted with
  • Glasses and contact lenses
  • Antibacterial wipes&hand sanitizer
  • Electronics: Headphones, power bank, Kindle
  • Snacks and water
  • Compressive Socks
  • A change of clothing
  • Pen: to fill out immigration forms

Tip #10: Dress appropriately

Please dress appropriately for the airport and for the country you are traveling to.

Many Muslim countries are tired of seeing tourists in skimpy outfits, and they are calling on visitors to respect their culture.

There’s nothing wrong with dressing in lighter clothes to deal with hot weather, but it’s important that you don’t accidentally offend anyone with your choice of clothing, even when you are at the airport.

So check the local customs and dress code for your destination.

A good idea if you want to sleep your way through a long-haul flight is to change clothes.

You can bring your sweatpants and a t-shirt in your carry-on and change just before boarding or in the restroom on board the plane.

You’ll be dressed for sleep and this will help you have a good one.

If you fly Business or First class on certain long-haul flights, with some airlines like American Airlines, British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, Emirates, Etihad, and some Asian Airlines, you will be offered sleepwear or pajamas. Take up the offer, you won’t regret it.

How Do I Dress My Kids When We’re Traveling by Plane?

Simply follow the same rules that I outline above.

Dress them in something comfy.

Oh, and kids being kids,  stain-resistant, dark-colored clothes are a very good idea.

Don’t forget a jacket or coat, socks, hat and gloves if needed.

If your children are infants, choose something that is easy for you to handle when changing a diaper in an airplane restroom: something with buttons for easy diaper-access.

Always bring a change of clothes in case there are any spills or other accidents.

And there are always spills and accidents with the little ones, aren’t there?

WHAT TO WEAR

  • Lightweight jacket or coat. You’ll save space in your luggage later and it’ll be more comfortable to wear.
  • Cardigan, sweater, thermal t-shirt: layer up in case it gets cold on the plane
  • Comfortable pants : leggings, wide pants, joggers
  • Shoes that are easy to put on: Slip-on shoes or sneakers
  • Scarf: useful as a blanket, eye mask or travel pillow
  • Big tote bag or backpack: to fit all your travel gadgets, magazine, water
  • Glasses: The air in the cabin can dry your eyes out, so consider wearing your glasses on flights

WHAT NOT TO WEAR

  • Heavy, bulky coats
  • A single thick sweater gives you no option for temperature changes
  • Too tight pants: skinny jeans are not only uncomfortable to wear, but they also can cause circulation problems.
  • High heels or tight shoes that are complicated to put on: remember your feet will swell during the flight.
  • Too many accessories: Necklaces, bracelets, rings, big earrings, belt, etc.

6 Editor-Approved Airport Outfits That'll Double Your Chances of an Upgrade

Maxine Eggenberger

One of the most popular things we cover here at Who What Wear is airport style. Pictures of what Gigi Hadid, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Rihanna, Kendall Jenner and more wear to terminals across the world are always just as loved as any fashion week street style pictures. It is, therefore, (unofficially) within our job descriptions to look at endless pictures of airport style, so you can bet we WWW editors have our own long-haul uniforms down.

airport-outfit-ideas-221910-1654097928676-main

Here, several of our editors have broken down what they always wear to travel and divulge their tips on staying comfortable and looking stylish at 39,000 feet. Our personal styles couldn't be more different on a day-to-day basis, but when it comes to travelling, we all have similar tactics for formulating airport outfits. Each editor sticks to neutral palettes to make layering even easier, and every single one of them travels in a pair of flat shoes—some even opt for the very same trainer brand. Scroll below to see what six of our editors wear when travelling.

Hannah Almassi, Editor in Chief

airport-outfit-ideas-221910-1654095305943-main

"When I travel I like to prioritise a long cardigan or big shawl—something I can wrap myself up in on the plane (I always feel the cold) that's also packable and resists creasing so I can bundle it up into a big basket bag. (Yes, I take my basket bag on the flight as I don't want it to get ruined in a suitcase). I'd most likely chuck this over a comfy midi dress or slouchy trousers with a tee—never jeans as they're so uncomfortable!"

Shop the Look:

Johnstons of Elgin + Cashmere Poncho

"Something like this also doubles as a handy, chic cover-up on chilly nights."

Cotton Rich Ribbed Slim Fit T-Shirt

"I like my T-shirts fitted, not baggy."

Shell Small Leather-Trimmed Raffia Tote

"I wish it were mine."

Linen-Blend Pull-On Trousers

"One word: comfort."

Bridge Slide, Nut

"I have these in navy suede, and they're so easy to throw on with all summer outfits."

Maxine Eggenberger, Deputy Editor

airport-outfit-ideas-221910-1654096094902-main

"Whether or not I'm travelling, I'm the sort of person who likes to layer year-round as I always feel the chill. For the plane, I'll wear a blazer over a shirt layered over a vest, and then I'll drape a cardigan overtop of my tote so I have it on hand when I inevitably get cold. Although my outfits usually revolve around dresses and skirts, jeans with stretch in them are my go-to for flights (again with the sole intention of keeping myself cosy). Superga trainers serve as my shoes of choice as they allow me to dash as quickly as possible from the plane to baggage collection to my hotel. I'm all about maximising my pool time."

Sézane + Gaspard Cardigan

"Hands down, the best and most versatile knit I own."

The Frankie Shop + Lui Organic Cotton-Poplin Shirt

"When I land, I'll style this over everything from bra tops to satin slip dresses.”

Ribbed Tank Top

"Look for cotton layers for breathability."

Cropped Barrel-Leg Jeans

"These jeans are comfier than they look."

Navy stripe raffia bag from Sézane

"Roomy enough for all of my in-flight essentials (read: skincare products and snacks)."

Superga + 2750 Cotu Classic White Trainers

"Every outfit is improved with these classic trainers."

Remy Farrell, Shopping Editor

airport-outfit-ideas-221910-1654096256006-main

"There is something supremely decadent about cloud-soft cashmere on a long-haul flight, and as I end up building most of my holiday outfits around a basic tank top, I'll wear one to the airport layered under a jacket. As soon as I step off the plane and into the heat, I'll swap out the comfy trousers for a printed midi skirt to make the most of that bare-legged feeling."

Easy Rider Faux Leather Shacket

"To swap out the vinyl trench coats I lived in all winter, this cropped jacket has me covered for the chilly welcome back to Britain."

Scoop-Neck Ribbed Stretch-Woven Top

"A versatile vest  is the wardrobe staple you need for summer."

N.Peal London + Cashmere Trousers in Navy

"Ultra soft and impossibly chic."

Arco Small Intrecciato Leather Tote

"An oversized tote is a must for me on a plane. After all, it has to hold all of my impulsive duty-free purchases."

Converse All Star Hi Trainers in White

"Classic white high tops are my go-to airport shoes."

Emily Dawes, Affiliate Editor

airport-outfit-ideas-221910-1654096366171-main

"I like to be comfortable but still feel a little put-together when I travel. That's why these H&M satin-look trousers are perfect. They feel like pyjamas but look like tailoring! I also like to travel in layers as I'm only ever too warm or too cold. A hoodie is cosy, but I'll add a chic trench layered on top for when I leave the airport. If I'm flying somewhere warm, I'll stow the jumper in my case as I go through passport control. Of course, a roomy tote that doubles as a work or beach bag at the other end is an essential. And for shoes, slip-ons are my go-to, and since investing in a pair of Birkenstock Bostons recently, I can't imagine a better plane shoe. Compression socks optional."

Double-Breasted Mid-Length Coat

"I own this trench and think it's well worth the investment."

Essence Standard Hoodie

"Hoodies don't come chicer than this beige iteration."

Arket + Heavyweight T-Shirt

"The tee our editors all love."

Wide Pull-On Trousers

"H&M always delivers on comfy trousers."

Chloé + Woody Medium Leather-Trimmed Linen Tote

"This designer canvas bag has been on my wish list for months."

Boston Suede Clogs

"I'm devoted to my Boston Birkenstocks."

Remi Afolabi, Video Content Creator

airport-outfit-ideas-221910-1654096661676-main

"I'm definitely the layering type when it comes to travelling. It makes it easy for me to adapt to my environment weather-wise. I've developed a love for matching sets as of late and adore this Le Ore cardigan-and-trouser combination—a much more stylish alternative to the regular tracksuit. Trench coats are easy to throw on and don't carry too much bulk, which I like. Love how elevated this trench coat looks in this light sage colour."

Mango Angela Wrap Detail Trench Coat, Khaki

"With a trench, I always feel that I look a lot more put together—this one is lightweight enough to throw on and off when needed."

black knit set

"You don't have to think too much about your look with a stylish matching set."

Leia Tote Bag

"A serial over-packer needs hand luggage that leans on the bigger side."

White and beige trainers

"Comfort is essential when it comes to footwear. A pair of trainers is always my go-to."

Eleanor Vousden, Beauty Editor

airport-outfit-ideas-221910-1686755381846-main

"I'm one of those rare breeds of people who like to travel in jeans. I'm not sure why, but I don't like to feel too sloppy when I travel, so I never wear jogging bottoms or anything too slouchy. I typically wear jeans, a T-shirt and a smarter blazer, and I'll bring a big scarf for the plane."

Arket + Oversized Linen Blazer

"This blazer feels summery thanks to the linen fabric."

Arket + Crew-Neck T-Shirt

"My all-time favourite tee."

& Other Stories + Fringed Wool Blanket Scarf

"I'm always so glad for a scarf when I'm on a long-haul flight."

Whistles + Stretch Barrel Leg Jean

"The looser silhouette ensures these jeans are comfortable to travel in."

M&S Collection + Leather Bow Ballet Pumps

"Any shoe other than flats is out of the question."

What To Wear On A Long Haul Flight (Your Stylish Inflight Packing List)

What to wear on a long haul flight is part art, part science. The art is the emotional bit that makes you grab things you love, and the science part is packing what fits!

I’m writing this fresh as I get off a 12-hour flight from Asia, while I still remember what I wish I’d had and what I know I’ll never use.

And 12 hours is nothing.

Because these days, you could spend upward of 16 hours on a single flight.  Qatar Airways will fly you from Doha to Auckland in 16 hours and 23 minutes. If that’s too short, United Airlines will whisk you from Houston to Sydney in 17.5 hours. And Sydney-New York is now being tested: when that comes online, you’ll be in the air for an interminable 20 hours. That’s almost a full day, sleep included.

Other than a chance upgrade to Business Class, the only hope of relaxation you have is wearing comfortable clothes and having your in-flight necessities within reach.

And here’s another thought: What if your flight gets delayed? Cancelled? What if your flight is transiting through another destination and you have to stay longer than planned?

Like the Scouts’ motto, Be Prepared!

WHAT TO WEAR ON A LONG HAUL FLIGHT: HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST TRAVEL OUTFITS

Putting together the perfect long haul flight outfit.

Before we look at concrete recommendations ( click here  if you want to jump to the comparison chart and shop right away), here are some  guidelines to help you pack  for a flight that will last the better part of a day.

1. Your travel clothes should be comfortable

That should go without saying!

But… what’s that I spy sashaying down the aisle? A tight-fitting blouse with popping buttons, a snug wide belt and non-stretch jeans?

Enjoy, because I wouldn’t. I need things that flow, that breathe and that stretch.

Think about it: a long flight is like waking up in the morning, sitting down ALL DAY, then going to bed. It’s that long.

And what if your flight is delayed? You could be stuck in the airport for extra hours before take-off, or in transit – with no access to your luggage and clean clothes.

2. Your inflight wardrobe should be light and easy to carry

Given that you’ll be wearing rather than packing these clothes, make sure they’re lightweight so you can crumple and fold them if you take off a layer, put them to the side or stuff them in your bag. Better plenty of lightweight items than one heavy one.

There’s an exception: if you’re going somewhere you need heavy clothing, such as a parka for winter in Canada or a major hike that requires heavy boots. In that case, by all means wear them on the plane (unless baggage weight is not an issue for you).

3. Consider wearing layers

This is one of the more important tips I can share with you because inflight temperature will not stay stable – anywhere:

  • There can be  many degrees of difference  between the airport, the access corridors and the plane. Your teeth could be chattering one minute and you could be covered in sweat the next.
  • Temperatures inside the plane change : notice how you’re sweltering while you’re waiting for takeoff, but freezing in the middle of the night?
  • If you’re headed to destinations with  wildly differing climates  – Australia in winter to Southeast Asia, for example, or northern Europe to southern Spain – you’ll be grateful to have things to take off (or put on).

Whatever the circumstance, you need to be able to regulate your own temperature and layers are the easiest way to do this.

4. Avoid bulk or sharp things – as in jewelry, buttons or metal

Metal and chains can actually be dangerous: they can cut flesh, and get caught in such things as trays, armrests or passing trolleys.  Space is so confined you can scratch someone with a fancy metal button just by turning around, or get it caught in something.

5. There’s no reason you shouldn’t wear chic travel clothes

I try to be chic when I travel – as long as the chic doesn’t override the comfort.

Linen is chic, and some of the newer stretch materials look natural and classy.

But that’s up to you. If I’m being met on arrival or have meetings as soon as I land (ugh, it happens), then I’d like to make a good first impression. If I’m on my own (the most frequent scenario) I’ll happily be more casual.

You can also improve your chic quotient with a few well-chosen accessories or a bit of makeup before landing.

6. Stick to neutral or patterned colors

If you’ve ever worn white on a long trip, you’ll know why I say this. Two or even three meals on a bumpy flight probably mean a small spill or two, some crumbs, perhaps a little smear.

Wear a pale color and you’ll be showing off those splashes.

Patterns or neutral shades, on the other hand, have a better chance of hiding those unfortunate accidents.

7. Choose your material carefully

This is hugely personal. Most people recommend against linen, because it wrinkles. But – it’s  supposed  to wrinkle so to me, that doesn’t look bad at all. Linen breathes well and seems to adapt to my body temperature.

Whatever you choose, it’s key to wear a material that breathes. It’s dry up there in the sky and you don’t want something that clings and makes you sweat.

There’s also a security issue. Should a fire break out, synthetics can be dangerous, both for the way they melt and for the fumes they could emit.

8. Make sure your feet are protected

There are two reasons for this: safety, and hygiene.

Safety first: A plane has many surfaces and corners just waiting to bump into you, and breaking a toe is not fun (I speak from experience). Not only that but a trolley can damage those toes severely, and if there’s a (God forbid) emergency, you’ll want to be able to move around solidly and safely.

The other issue is hygiene. Airplanes are among the dirtiest environments around, and bathrooms even more so. You’ll want something robust on your feet if you’re wandering into the toilet…

The packing list: comfy travel clothes for your flight

Now that we have some clarity about  how  to choose the best travel clothes for long flights (plus other inflight necessities), here are some recommendations for fashionable travel clothes.

Your main long flight outfit

Remember all that talk about layering? Here’s where it all comes together.

Let’s start with the tops.

You really need three layers:

  • a very light top as a first layer (I’m not counting your  travel bra  as a layer, by the way!)
  • a light, airy short- or long-sleeved top, or oversized T-shirt or man’s shirt, or long-ish cardigan or jacket as a second layer
  • a shawl or pashmina to throw over it all

Then the bottoms.

This would be a single layer and I would choose between stretch pants (elastic waistbands are nice for flying) and other  comfortable travel pants . You could also wear a dress or  a travel skirt  but I find these less comfortable for long hauls, especially if you’re stuck at the airport for any length of time. Whatever you choose has to be super comfortable because you’re going to be sitting for hours so some level of stretch is a must. And remember, too-tight pants can increase the risk of DVT, or deep vein thrombosis.

Do you suffer from jet lag when you fly long distances? If so,  this article may help !

The following are some recommendations and items I like. Just make sure that style-wise, these items fit with the rest of the wardrobe you’re taking with you.

Comparison chart: Best clothes to wear on a plane

Whatever you decide to wear, make sure it is comfortable. You never know how long you may be in the same clothes!

Pampering your feet

The issue of comfy travel shoes emerges each time air travel is discussed.

In my opinion, the best thing to wear on a plane are low-heeled slip-on comfortable shoes. They’re easy to remove at security or in an emergency, and you can slide them on and off quickly to go to the bathroom. ( I use Sketchers  and have several pairs.)

A few things to keep in mind when choosing the best shoes for flying:

  • Wear shoes that are  a bit roomy . Your feet tend to swell in a plane and if your shoes are tight-fitting, you may have trouble putting them back on after a long flight.
  • Get a  breathable material . I know some of you will swear by leather but unless it is the softest, most malleable of Italian skins, I would go for something that is made for breathing.
  • Wear  close-toed shoes  rather than sandals, because planes are full of metallic corners and sharp edges, not to mention getting to and from the airport and walking around uneven cobblestones at your destination.
  • Consider wearing  compression socks  to help fight swelling in flight and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
  • Finally, whatever you do, please  protect your feet from the dirt  on the plane. The floor is  dirty and the bathroom will most certainly be so after a few uses. Do NOT walk around barefoot, ever, and don’t wear socks or absorbent slippers – put your shoes back on!

WHAT TO PACK FOR A LONG FLIGHT – TRAVEL GEAR AND AIRPLANE ESSENTIALS

Clothes are all well and good, but there’s a lot more that goes into that packing list for your long flight travel essentials.

Don’t lose sight of your papers

I admit it’s never happened to me but I have heard stories of people rifling through belongings in the overhead bins while everyone is asleep. Urban legend? Perhaps. But do I want to take a chance? No I don’t.

So I keep my important papers with me on the plane: I alternate between a cross-body travel purse that I keep on me throughout the flight, a  money belt  that stays invisible under my clothes or an  infinity scarf  that also keeps me warm.

Long haul flight essentials: best travel accessories for long flights

We all have our preferences but here’s what I would take on the plane:

  • Glasses or contact lenses and whatever you need to read or watch movies
  • Reading material or other entertainment if you don’t like watching the small screen (cards, sudoku, you name it!)
  • Any medication you need inflight or for the first few days after you land (in case your luggage gets lost), as well as standard meds for the flight (paracetamol for headaches, throat lozenges, antacids etc)
  • A pen (for those boarding cards) and a small notebook (in case you get an irresistible idea for your next novel)
  • A note with your passport number, flight number, hotel address and other pertinent information (so you won’t have to fumble through your papers when it’s time to fill out that boarding card)
  • A travel pillow if you’d like to bring your own
  • A  travel blanket  or pashmina to stay warm (and to roll up as a pillow if needed)
  • Healthy snacks, in case you wake up hungry in the middle of the night
  • Eye mask and earplugs if you use or need these
  • A pair of clean underwear, panty pads and hygienic towelettes or wet wipes
  • A small toothbrush and toothpaste
  • A comb or hairbrush
  • Face cleansing towelettes, moisturizer, lip balm
  • Small bottle of hand sanitizer or tea tree oil (for your hands but also to clean your tray)
  • Headphones (I’ve started using these little  ear pods ) or noise-cancellation headphones if you want to block it all out
  • Battery charger for when your phone runs out of juice

INFLIGHT FASHION ETIQUETTE: WHAT NOT TO WEAR ON THE PLANE

There’s a lot of conflicting information out there about what to wear on a long haul flight – and what not to wear. We all have our opinions – here’s mine, based on more than half a century of spending a lot of time cooped up in the air.

The thorny question: can you wear flip flops on a plane?

You CAN – but you shouldn’t. You could easily cut a foot on some of the metallic edges and in case of an emergency, you want to make sure your feet are protected. So the answer is No, unless you stick them in your bag and use them to go to the bathroom, and even then.

And another: can you wear hats on a plane?

There’s no reason why not – other than your own comfort. You can wear your hat onto the plane but if you’re on a long-haul flight, you’re not going to want to keep it on if you have any hope of being comfortable.

Can I wear pyjamas on a long flight?

Technically yes – but why on earth would you want to look like you’re just getting out of bed? I certainly don’t enjoy looking at passengers who think so little of themselves they can’t be bothered to get dressed to go out, let alone to travel. You can find plenty of comfortable clothes you can sleep in without looking like you should have stayed home.

The issue of perfumes and scent

What may smell nice to you may turn a flight into a nightmare for your row-mate. Some people are extremely sensitive to smells and being subjected to perfume for the equivalent of half a day is unkind at best, or downright dangerous if someone has an allergy or asthma.

Speaking of smells, remember that the recycled air and closed-in space of an airplane can intensify odors so a rumpled outfit that seems all right after a quick sniff may be close to overpowering by the end of the flight. If you can, save a clean outfit for your flight – you wouldn’t wear dirty clothes for a day of sightseeing so why would you wear them for a day of flying?

Use these tips to make your long-haul flight bearable. No one enjoys spending a dozen hours cooped up in the sky but there are ways to make that time pass a little more comfortably and enjoyably. Have a great flight!

The 10 Best Travel Outfits for Long Flights

Posted by Kimmy Costa on January 04, 2023

Being comfortable quickly becomes the top priority when on a flight, especially on long-haul flights. You don't want to be hot or cold or have tight waistband digging into your skin. You just want to curl up in your seat to be as relaxed as possible to get some sleep. PLUS, you want to make it through security as effortlessly as possible. Those are some high expectations, but we've pulled together some outfits that check all those boxes no matter who you are.

man and woman sitting next to two suitcases

Here are some outfit inspirations and tips for dressing in a practical, stylish, and comfy way for those-long haul flights.

Ladies – Leggings & Tunic Top

Leggings and a tunic top make a nice long-haul travel outfit. If you tend to get chilly on flights or are arriving in a colder climate, thermal or fleece-lined leggings are a great choice. And a tunic top is versatile – flannel if you need to be warmer or cotton to stay cool. Adding a layer under the tunic can add some extra warmth if desired. Pair your leggings and tunic with slip-on sneakers or ankle boots, and you're good to go. Add your Juicepack into your tote bag with snacks and a book, and you'll be set for hours!

Ladies – Loose Linen Pants & Sweater

Linen pants are comfy, breathable, and effortlessly chic. Pair them with a slouchy tee and a warm sweater. Loose light layers keep you cozy while moving about the cabin or settling in for a snooze. And the sweater can be removed or added, depending on the unpredictable temperature on the flight. Add the Shoreline Watch and some loafers to complete your outfit.

Ladies – Joggers & Oversized Hoodie

Joggers and oversized hoodies are such a statement these days! While sweats can seem frumpy, more fitted joggers with a matching hoodie are stylish, cozy, and great for a long flight. Finish off your sporty look with sneakers and the Lifepack Relux . You'll be ready to hit the sights as soon as your plane lands!

Ladies – Maxi Dress

A dress might not be the first thing that comes to mind, but it is a practical option to add layers too. Leggings, a scarf, and a soft denim jacket transform a dress into a comfy long-haul flight outfit. Pair with sneakers or ankle boots. Plus, when you get off the plane, you can ditch the leggings and scarf in your Carry-On Closet if needed and still have a stylish outfit to leave the airport in.

Men – Joggers & Hoodie

Joggers are the elevated sibling of sweatpants and, paired with a hoodie, make for the perfect long-haul flight travel set. Comfy, trendy, and appropriate to wear out and about. A thermal shirt and thick socks give some added warmth on the flight if needed. Keep your Dopp Kit in your personal item to stay refreshed and  you're ready to fly through the night!

Men – Chinos & Zip Up Fleece

This combo is a great way to look semi-professional while still relaxing on the flight, all while giving off that hedge fund manager look. Have an important meeting right after you land? Have an oxford button-up underneath your fleece, and you're good to go. Tuck your Dopp Kit into your carry-on bag to freshen up before disembarking, so you'll be ready to take on the world without skipping a beat.

Men – Jeans & Sweater

man in sweatshirt packing a suitcase

Broken-in jeans with a sweater and slip-on sneakers are an easy way to look good without compromising comfort. Add a long-sleeved shirt under the sweater and a puffer vest for extra warmth. You'll be ready to grab your luggage and see the sights right when you leave the plane with this combo.

Kids – Joggers & Sweatshirt

Joggers and a sweatshirt look just as great, if not better, on kids than on adults! Comfy, functional, and easy to add layers to. Slide-on shoes will make getting through security easier, but trade them out once settled in for some little slippers or thick socks to up the comfort level.

Kids – Dress & Leggings

A long-sleeved dress and cotton leggings create a comfy outfit that can be worn for hours and is easy to curl up and sleep in. Add thicker leggings or an undershirt for more warmth. A cute pair of slip-on boots and a jacket will finish off the look.

Kids – Pajamas

PJs are 100% acceptable for kids to wear to survive a long flight. There's nothing comfier than a favorite pair of PJs.

What to wear when flying long distance and other long flight essentials

October 9, 2021 | Posted in: Travel gear reviews

Standing at the airport, waiting to board a flight, don't you often just wish you could skip that part and just say “Beam me up, Scotty!” to appear at your destination in a heartbeat?

Yeah, me too.

Long flights especially can suck the energy out of a person , but I assure you your trip will go much smoother with this list of long-haul flight essentials I put together for you!

Below, you can find my personal recommendations on what to wear when flying long distance and in-flight travel essentials to keep you entertained and relaxed until the plane touches the tarmac again.

Do note this article was written before Covid-19. For personalized assistance on travel during coronavirus, I highly recommend my friend Freddy's Corona Travel Concierge at Points Panda to make sure your travel is hassle-free.

What to wear on a long haul flight essentials

As you'll be sitting for hours in a confined space, it's crucial to wear something you're comfortable in. When the plane's aisle is the biggest space you have to move in for several hours at an end, it doesn't make sense to restrict yourself even more by wearing tight clothing, does it?

It doesn't.

The best clothes for flying are clothes that allow you to curl up in your seat in any possible way and do some exercises without cutting off your bloodstream. So when you're putting together your long haul flight outfit, go for these items:

What to wear when flying long distance and other long flight essentials 1

As you'll be seated most of the time, it's important to wear a top layer that's a bit longer so that your back isn't exposed. Especially as the flight progresses and you slide down in your seat, it's nice to have something that still covers everything.

An additional benefit of wearing something longer is that it'll keep you warm. Flights can get chilly and we all know those airplane blankets aren't the warmest around.

When it's warm on board, you can fold up your comfi cardigan to serve as a pillow.

Worth checking out:

Speaking of blankets, if you wear a nice wide scarf, you can use it to keep your neck warm but also wrap it around you or use it as an extra blanket without having to bring an actual blanket on board. That's space saved right there!

Thick scarves can also be folded up to be used as a little pillow, or you can go ninja style and wrap your scarf around your head like a sleeping mask. Their multi-functionality make scarves one of the best travel accessories for long flights.

What to wear when flying long distance and other long flight essentials 15

Because I'm quickly cold, I usually wear three layers: a top, a t-shirt and a cardigan or pullover. You can opt for just a top or a t-shirt, just make sure that it doesn't fit too tightly and still covers your lower back when you're seated.

Not only is more comfortable in terms of movement to wear something loose, but you'll also be happy you did when it gets hot on the plane and your armpits start to cry – believe me.

4. Loose pants

What to wear when flying long distance and other long flight essentials 37

I know this will be a point of discussion. You can easily wear something loose on top and still wear classy, but achieving a stylish look with a loose top and bottom, that's a bit harder.

If you've worn skinny jeans to fly long haul before and you're comfortable in them, by all means, go ahead, but I'm pretty sure loose pants are a better option. Especially after you've eaten all the snacks you brought on board.

Besides, fashion has been kind to travelers lately as we've seen a rise of elegant loose pants come to the stores the past two years or so. Good options are:

The times when sweatpants were bag-like things you loved but wouldn't want to be caught dead in are long over. There's so much cool activewear out there nowadays and the pants can often easily be combined with “normal” tops. Combine with a cute sneaker and you're all set!

If you're not a big fan of activewear that looks like activewear, check out travel yoga pants. While I think yoga pants still look like activewear, there are some brands that have yoga pants styled to look like business wear.

What to wear when flying long distance and other long flight essentials 39

I would go for a fashionable one that doesn't have the crotch between the knees, but that's just me. I always dress to be comfortable when I travel, but I do try to look a little nice as well.

What to wear when flying long distance and other long flight essentials 49

Not everybody can pull off palazzo pants, but if you can, go for it! They're as comfi as activewear, especially when they're made from stretchy fabric, and often look a bit more classy. I never wear them as I'm too short and prefer pants that fit around my ankle so cold air can't come in from below :D

What to wear when flying long distance and other long flight essentials 59

I know I told you to wear loose pants, but I also know some women love wearing leggings and the fact is they make great travel companions as they'll take up zero space in your luggage afterward. I personally prefer loose pants, but if you do want to wear leggings, just make sure they don't fit too tightly.

What to wear when flying long distance and other long flight essentials 69

Personally, I always take my shoes off during long flights except when it's really cold, so I don't think that what you wear on your feet doesn't matter that much, as long as you bring socks against the cold.

That being said, you'll be tired and perhaps a bit sore when you land, so it might not be the best idea to wear high heels or tight-fitting shoes as you'll need to get to our hotel in them.

I practically always wear sneakers to fly. I'm a real sneakerhead so I take a pair on every trip and as they're usually the bulkiest shoes I pack, it makes sense to wear them for take-off.

Plus, they keep my feet warm and are comfortable no matter how tired my body is.

The only times I didn't wear them to fly, were when I traveled to Canada and Finland in winter as I needed to wear super bulky snowshoes then.

What to wear when flying long distance and other long flight essentials 71

I already mentioned to always bring socks. Well, it doesn't really matter for short flights, but if you're wondering what socks to wear on long-haul flights, definitely go for compression socks. Deep Vein Thrombosis is a real threat when flying and compression socks help improve blood circulation and prevent DVT.

What to wear when flying long distance and other long flight essentials 81

I've put a lot of emphasis on wearing loose, comfortable clothes for long-haul flights, and yet I don't recommend wearing a maxi dress or skirt. The reason for that is that security might be more likely to give you a pat-down as they can't see whether you're hiding something underneath all that comfortable looseness. &nbsp,

Let's recap: what to wear on a long-haul flight? 1. Long cardigan or another top layer. 2. Long and loose top or t-shirt. 3. Scarf. 4. Loose pants. 5. Compression socks. 6. Sneakers or other comfortable shoes.

Whatever long flight outfit you end up choosing, keep in mind that it's also the outfit you'll be arriving in and might be stuck in for 24 hours or more if you suffer a delay or your luggage gets lost. In brief: make it comfi, but not hideously comfi :D

Plan for the best, prepare for the worst. Travel insurance has you covered in case (part of) your trip gets canceled, you get sick or hurt abroad and even when your electronics break or get stolen. I've had ongoing travel insurance ever since I started traveling to make sure I'm covered for every trip I go on.

Don't have travel insurance yet? Check out SafetyWing. They offer super flexible plans that you can even sign up for while you're already on your trip. On top of that, they were the first travel insurance to cover COVID, and when I got COVID, they reimbursed all of my expenses without making a fuss. Their customer support team is great and I can personally recommend them.

Long haul flight essentials: carry-on checklist

Aside from wearing the right long-haul flight outfit, there are also a few things you can take with you to make your flight more pleasant. These are my carry-on essentials:

What to wear when flying long distance and other long flight essentials 89

Snacks are plane travel essentials and those who claim they aren't, haven't seen me hangry yet :D

Now, I should probably recommend you to pack healthy flight snacks, but I'm not going to because I don't always do that myself. Being someone who gets nauseous quite easily, I tried a bunch of things and found that the only thing that always tastes good for me on a plane are… crisps. Preferably Pringles, but I'm not too fussy about that. I think it's the combination of the saltiness and the plainness that makes them so tasty up in the air and never causes any trouble.

I was once on a 10-hour flight and the screen of the lady behind me didn't work for the entire flight… Don't want to be stuck without a book then!

I highly recommend bringing a small shoulder bag even if you're also bringing a backpack or something else, because then you can put all the things you need easy access to – like your passport, paper tissues, and money – in there, while you can leave bigger items that you won't immediately need in your bigger bag.

All of the above will help you get through that long flight as comfortable as possible but chances are, you'll still don't feel like taking a long train ride or figuring out how to take that bus to your hotel.

Welcome Pickups is great for booking airport transfers. Their site is super userfriendly and you can cancel up to 24 hours beforehand if needed.

Want to stay connected on your trip so you can share photos, call loved ones over WiFi and easily use apps like Google Maps? Then check out Solis Wifi mobile WiFi .

They offer both day passes and monthly subscriptions providing you with 4G throughout your trips. I've been using their daily passes not just when I travel outside the EU (no roaming charges for me in the EU) but also as a backup for when I think I'll go over my phone's data plan.

And that's it! I hope this post gave you some ideas on how to dress for a flight as well as for what to take with you on board.

Looks like you covered all the elements one needs for a comfortable long haul flight. I’ll try to incorporate come of these tips on my next big flight!

Thanks for this post. I’ve always been curious as to whether or not compression socks work. It’s always been flip-flops and random socks. Travel pillows are tough so I might look into the J-Pillow you mentioned. Ear plugs are an essential though for sleeping masks I’ve never actually tried it. Only thing i might add is eye drops. I think you’ve got it nailed though with this list! Thanks for the reminders. Cheers, Mark V

You’re welcome!

So far, the J-Pillow’s the best travel pillow I came across. It’s easy to use in different positions and it has a little loop with a pinch button so that you can attach it to your backpack or handbag and you don’t have to pack it.

I only recently started to take an eye-mask for long-haul flights and I find that it does help, especially when I want to sleep through a meal service or another moment where they typically turn on the lights.

Eye drops against dry eyes? That’s a very good addition!

You should try the water filled eye mask!! They are absolutely soothing to tired eyes

Is this like a weighted mask or still a bit different? I’m quite sensitive to things touching the top of my nose (don’t ask :D) so am worried that might be too heavy.

Nice post! :)

Marisa says

A big no-no is loose-fitting pants!!! Why? Because when you go to the loo the pants are all over the DIRTY floor!!! Wear tight-fitting jeans or tights under a long tunic.

Lol. I always wear loose-fitting trousers for long flights and I’ve never had them on the floor. I’ll also take 10 hours of comfortable sitting over having to watch out for two minutes on the toilet any time :-)

Big no-no for me to have my pants sweep any loo-floor ESPECIALLY in cramped plane toilets!!! Soft tights under tunic for me! I’ll give the jeans I mentioned a miss unless they are the soft kind rather than the conventional kind.

Well you can keep your pants up so that they don’t touch the flour :-) I’ve never had issues with that.

Very hard to keep palazzo pants from touching the floor! I wore a pair to school just yesterday and hated going to the loo. You basically have to roll them up and ‘pin’ to the crotch and then try not touch the floor. Anyway that’s just the way it goes with me. Have a nice day!

Hm good point. I usually have elastics with me so I just “tie” the pants together :D

A lovely day for you too!

Love the post but do disagree with the comment on maxi dresses/skirts. I have worn a maxi dress to travel in for the last 4 years and I have never had any issues – they tend to stop you if you are wearing wedge heeled shoes so i have swapped my trusty wedges for flat sparkly sandals this year.

Hey Carrie, Thanks for letting us know! I never wear wedges so hadn’t thought about those.

That all sounds very good advice. I have noted it all down. Thank you.

Haven’t tried that one yet. Haven’t felt the need to try another one :)

Thanks for Sharing. I will using your tips for my upcoming long haul. It sounds very practical too. Thanks.

What do you think about compression tights?

I dedicated a full article to all kinds of compression socks here . I personally only wear calf-high compression socks as I always travel in trousers and find those to be the most comfortable.

So helpful for my first trip abroad. Cheers

My husband and I will be traveling in two weeks (so exciting!) and absolutely everything is packed already.. however, you mentioned the compression socks. I will be getting them tomorrow since stores are closed now. Thank you for your advice

You’re welcome! Hope you have a lovely trip :)

Hi Sofie great advice I’m going from England to New Zealand. What shall I do about my contact lenses? Jules

Hey Jules, I used to wear contact lenses (I had my eyes fixed since then) and for flights, I would always take them out. The air on the plane is so dry and if you fall asleep with your lenses in, it’ll feel horrible when you wake up. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about :-) I would take them with me in a lens container in my carry-on, as part of the little bag of liquids I would keep on me. If you want to put them back in as soon as you arrive or even right before you land, you can get one of those 75 ml lens liquid thingies to keep in your carry-on as well. Hope you have a great trip!

Silvia Tallarico says

The clip that closes the bra can hurt your back; then, I recommend wearing a front-closing bra or yoga bra if you have to fly often for six/seven hours. A flight attendant gave me that advice, and I remember it every time I fly.

I’ve never had this issue but that’s a great tip!

liz tomlin says

What is the best way to go about doing your covid test and providing evidence (South Africa ) upon arrival. ?!

Hey Liz, You’re best to check official sources for that as this type of information changes too often. Try the website of the South African Tourism board or that of the airport you’re flying to.

What Are the Best Clothes to Wear On A Long Haul Flight?

What Are the Best Clothes to Wear On A Long Haul Flight? Written by Alex. Published on 3rd May, 2023 . Category: Just For Fun , Travel Guides

This is one of those questions which we probably all think about, but often don’t quite get around to doing the research. So here’s a quick article to try and condence the key pointers!

Let’s face it, long-haul flights can be tiring and uncomfortable, regardless of whether you’re in business class or economy, but wearing the right clothes can make all the difference. In this article, we will explore the best clothes to wear on a long-haul flight to ensure maximum comfort (and style!).

Comfortable trousers or Leggings

When it comes to long-haul flights, comfort is key. The last thing you want is to be stuck in uncomfortable clothing for hours on end. Opt for comfortable trousers or leggings that allow for a range of movement and are not too tight. Avoid jeans or pants with buttons, zippers or belts, as these can dig into your skin and cause discomfort. Not to mention the more metal you have in you clothing, particularly belts, often leads to slower passage through security.

Wear Breathable Tops

Choose a breathable and lightweight top that will keep you cool and comfortable during your flight. Cotton or linen tops are great options, as they are breathable and won’t cause you to overheat. Avoid tight-fitting tops, as they can restrict your movement and cause discomfort. A loose-fitting blouse or t-shirt is a great choice!

The temperature on a long-haul flight can vary greatly, so it’s important to wear layers that you can easily take on and off. A cardigan, hoodie, or light jacket is a great option. Layers also allow you to adjust your clothing to your comfort level. This is essential advice in case you get chilly!

Comfortable Shoes

When it comes to long-haul flights, again, comfort should be your top priority. Wear comfortable shoes that are easy to slip on and off, as you will need to remove them during security checks and during the flight. Sneakers, loafers, or slip-on shoes are great options. Avoid heels if possible; whilst they may look great, they are probably the least comfortable option!

Compression Socks for Long Haul Flights

Sitting in one position for an extended period can lead to poor circulation, swollen feet, and even in extreme cases, deep vein thrombosis (blood clots). To prevent these issues, wear compression socks during your flight. Compression socks improve blood flow and reduce swelling, keeping your feet and legs comfortable during your long flight.

Scarf or Wrap

A scarf or wrap is a versatile accessory that can serve as a blanket, pillow or even an eye mask during your flight. Choose a lightweight scarf or wrap that you can easily fold and store in your bag.

Minimal Jewellery

When traveling, it’s best to keep your jewelry to a minimum. Avoid wearing anything bulky or that can get caught on your clothing. Simple earrings or a necklace are great options. If you do decide to wear jewellery and you accidentally drop something on the floor in a hard place to access, it is always recommended to ask a member of the cabin crew to help recover it. This also applys to mobile phones and is particularly important in business class cabins as attempting to move the seat can result in your belongings being accidentally crushed!

In Conclusion

When it comes to long-haul flights, comfort should be your top priority. Opt for comfortable, breathable clothing that allows for a range of movement. Layers, comfortable shoes, compression socks, and a scarf or wrap are also great options. By following these tips, you can ensure a comfortable and stylish long-haul flight.
