The Indian railway network is by far among the best in the country. Tracks run through terrains, connecting cities and states across the nation’s varied terrains and landscapes, passing through quaint hamlets and bustling cities.

Train journeys are always a fun experience – opening snack boxes as you settle in comfortably for your long journey ahead, meeting new people and hearing the cacophony of vendors, coolies and more at the stations is almost a comforting experience. And among the best memories of trips have stemmed from rail journeys for most of us – travelling long distances with our families, hearing stories of our parents and grandparents and how they used to explore the length and breadth of the country, purchasing snacks and tea on the stations and arriving at their destinations covered in black soot from the train’s exhausts.

Among the best train experiences, we believe, are overnight journeys. There’s a certain thrill in waking up at a new place, especially when you went to bed in a completely different landscape. Now, Mumbai-Pune Intercity Express will run 40 mins faster

Starting today, the Mumbai-Pune Intercity Express will run a lot faster and save you nearly 40 mins on the journey. The train will now take 2 hours 35 minutes instead of 3 hours 17 minutes earlier. That will make it the fastest train between Mumbai and Pune, faster even than the Indrayani and the Deccan Queen.

What's this magic? The Central Railways is deploying a new “push-pull” technique on the Intercity Express. Instead of one, the train will have two locomotives--one at the front to pull, and one at the rear to push. The technique has been successfully used on the Rajdhani Express and the Deccan Queen.

Mumbai Pune Intercity Express timing

With the new time-saving technique, the Intercity Express schedule has also changed.

Earlier, the Intercity Express would leave Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus at 6:40am and reach Pune at 9:57am. Now, the Intercity Express (Train no. 12127) will leave CSTM at 6:45am and reach Pune Junction at 9:20am.

On return, it will leave Pune Junction at 6.30pm and arrive at Mumbai CSTM at 9.05pm.

Other trains from Mumbai to Pune

In comparison to the Intercity Express, the Indrayani Express, leaves Mumbai at 5:40am and reaches Pune at 9:05am clocking in a total of 3 hours 17 minutes of travel time. The Deccan Express leaves CSTM at 7am and reaches Pune 4 hrs 05 mins later at 11.05am. Then there's the Udyan Express, leaving at 8.10am from Mumbai, arriving Pune at 11.40am. You can also take the Koyna Express, which leaves CSTM at 8.40am and takes 4 hours to get to Pune at 12.40pm.

In the evening, the Deccan Queen leaves CSTM at 5.10pm from CSTM and reaches Pune 3 hours 15 minutes later at 8.25pm.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has embarked on a pioneering journey to develop the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s (MMR) longest metro rail project, stretching from Virar to Alibaug. This ambitious 136km metro rail initiative is a critical component of the ₹55,000 crore Virar-Alibaug Multimodal Corridor, aiming to enhance connectivity across key suburbs and foster an efficient transport network within the region.

Project Overview and Phases

The Virar to Alibaug metro project is not just a testament to modern engineering but a strategic effort to intertwine various modes of transportation, including roads, rail, and metro, under the multimodal corridor umbrella. The project, slated for completion by 2030, involves a meticulous construction plan divided into two phases:

• Phase 1: Envisages the construction of a 98.5-km highway from Navghar to Balavali.
• Phase 2: Plans for a 29.9-km highway extension from Balavali to Alibaug.

Feasibility Study and Detailed Project Report

A noteworthy stride in the project’s inception is the commencement of a feasibility study by the MSRDC. This study marks MSRDC’s foray into metro rail projects, historically known for their expertise in roads, bridges, and flyovers. The study aims to carve out the project’s logistics, cost, and route specifics, with a consultant appointed to shepherd this phase. Upon the completion of the feasibility study, a detailed project report will be prepared, signifying a major milestone in bringing the Virar to Alibaug metro line to fruition.

Connecting Key Suburbs and the Proposed Navi Mumbai Airport

The metro line promises to bolster connectivity across several vital areas, including Vasai-Virar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Uran, Pen, and Alibaug. Notably, the line is expected to feature at least 40 stations, ensuring widespread accessibility and convenience for residents. Additionally, the metro will play a pivotal role in connecting the proposed Navi Mumbai airport and JNPA, further enhancing the region’s transport dynamics.

Challenges and Considerations

Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the project, it is not without its challenges. Critics, such as AV Shenoy, a transport expert and member of the Mumbai Mobility Forum, argue for a suburban rail line on long-distance routes citing cost-effectiveness and the ability to cater to freight trains. Moreover, the decision on the location of the car depot remains pending, underscoring the intricate planning required to ensure the project’s success.
