An Insight into Malvan Tourism

With fishing as its main occupation, Malvan is one of the tourist places in Maharashtra which offers beautiful views of the Arabian Sea. This soothing picture-perfect beauty has a pleasant climate. These shrines and sanctuaries for devotees of God are mostly ancient and are worthy depictions of medieval architecture. Dashavataar is a religious play depicting the ten forms of Lord Vishnu is a large event for all the inhabitants of Malvan and is celebrated with much vigor. The tourists, if visiting that time of the year, will experience a culturally enriching festival of the locals. The Malvan Marine Wildlife sanctuary has a coverage area of 30 sq. km and owes its attraction to Sindhudurg Fort, black-headed gulls, ducks, waterfowl, plovers, egrets, and terns. Sindhudurg Fort

Sindhudurg Fort: Tourist Places To Visit In Malvan

Sindhudurg Fort is one of the most significant tourist places of Malvan. The fort is one of the finest examples of naval strategy of the ancient times. In 1664 the Sindhudurg Fort was built under the orders of Chhatrapati Shivaji to counter the invasion of the Dutch, Portuguese and the English. The massive citadel that lies off the sea coast on an islet known as the Khurte bet, was constructed with the best defensive against enemy attacks with massive walls, hidden gateways and long ramparts. The fort has 42 bastions that are encircled by the smaller Padmagad, Sarjekot and Rajkot forts.

The fort stands colossal and awe inspiring, rising from the midst of the crashing waves and is a symbol of history and the immensity of raw nature. The Sindhudurg fort can be reached by ferries but are usually cancelled during the rains.

Rameshwar Temple

Rameshwar Temple: Tourist Places To Visit In Malvan

Legends say that during the princely times Chhatrapati Shambu Raje, the King of Kolhapur gifted away the little hamlet of Achara as an inam to Lord Shiva, who is known as Inamdar Shri Dev Rameshwar. The temple to Rameshwar who is the resident village deity is said to date back to 1684, with later day additions  and is an imposing structure, a marvel of ancient architecture.

Twice a month the temple celebrates a grand procession to Vishnu, complete with a palanquin and accompaniment of musical instruments, along with Mahashivratri and Somawar poojas. Achara follows the unique tradition of gaon palan, when once in three years the villagers, along with their livestock abandon the settlement to live on the outskirts of the village. The bustling village looks deserted till the fourth day, when the village folk return home.

Wageshwar Temple

Wageshwar is a cave temple to Shiva, located in Tondawali about 24 km from Malvan. According to legends Tondawali had been under the sea ages ago and the local fishermen who cast their net found a shiva linga trapped in their net. As time passed, the waters around the region receded and the local people were able to build a temple to Shiva at the place where the linga was found. Behind the temple was a dense forest, where from tigers and leopards strolled into the temple but according to locals, would never harm the pilgrims who came to pray.

For more delightful surprises, the charming and secluded Tondawali beach which has a beautiful stretch of soft white sand and quiet waters is just a short distance from the Wagheshwar temple.

Vijaydurg Fort

Vijaydurg Fort: Tourist Places To Visit In Malvan

Another fine example of the naval defenses of the ancient Maratha period, is the Vijaydurg fort located at the peninsular tip of land in Sindudurg district. The fort lies on a hillock at the mouth of the Vagotan River and was called the Gibraltar of the East as it was enclosed by the Arabian Sea on three sides. Built by Bhojaraja Shilahar from about 1196 to 1205 AD, the fort passed through the Adil Shahi Dynasty and the Marathas under Chhatrapati Shivaji and finally the Peshwas and the British.

The fort which was considered one of the strongest naval barricades of the Marathas stood mighty and impregnable during attacks by the British, Dutch and the Portuguese. You could check out areas of the fort like the prison, storage houses, a large cannon and a secret tunnel which have withstood the ravages of time. Kunkeshwar Temple and a Beach: Tourist Places To Visit In Malvan

Kunkeshwar temple for Shiva is located on the shores of the Arabian Sea. The temple has a motorable road till the base and you have to climb up about a dozen steps to reach the gates. The temple is built in a unique layered hexagonal architectural style with a south Indian style and is said to have been built during the reign of the Yadava kings. The place is a very serene one, with not many pilgrims thronging the temple at all times, so you could spend some time in the shrine.

The white sandy and rocky beach on which the temple stands is the charming Kunkeshwar beach. It’s a lovely feel to sit on the boulders and let the waters lap at our feet. A walk along the shoreline revels more surprises with coconut fringed beaches and if you wait and watch you might even spot a school of dolphins out in the waters. The temple is about 41 km from Malvan.

Marine Wildlife Sanctuary

Marine Wildlife Sanctuary: Tourist Places To Visit In Malvan

The regions of Malvan, rich in seaside biodiversity had been declared a marine sanctuary way back in 1987. The core areas and buffer areas include the Sindhudurg fort as well as the submerged rocks and sandy beaches around Malvan and Sindhudurg. The sanctuary has a luxuriant coastal marine life with coral reefs, pearl oysters, mollusks, sea anemones, seaweeds and mangroves.

Tourists can explore the sanctuary as well as enjoy the time spent at the sprawling white sandy beaches of Vengurla, Tarakali and Tondawali that lie near the sanctuary, bordered by stately casuarina and coconut groves, as well as trek up the Sindhudurg Fort. The sanctuary offers accommodation at the Forest Department’s guest houses.

Mahapurush Mandir

Mahapurush Mandir: Tourist Places To Visit In Malvan

Mahapurush Mandir, like most temples of the Konkan is yet another temple set most idyllically on the seashore. It is a small but beautiful temple to Shiva, fringed by coconut, cashew and jackfruit trees and the Arabian Sea lapping at its feet. Near the Mahapurush Mandir is a small jetty from where the River Karli flows as a brook to join the Arabian Sea at the Tarkarli beach.

The soft white sands and the blue of the seas seem to magnify the serenity of the temple towers that rise up through the stately trees. Visit Devbagh whose picturesque landscape is the right place to get engrossed in the charms of rejuvenating nature and divinity. Devbagh is just about 4 km from Malvan.

Nava Durga Mandir

Nava Durga Mandir: Tourist Places To Visit In Malvan

British tourists filmed slapping each other in Majorca as crowds shout ‘fight’

Two female British tourists were filmed fighting each other in a Majorcan tourist resort as witnesses encouraged them.

One of the women appeared to get her rival into a chokehold, before turning on a Good Samaritan who tried to separate them.

Witnesses egged on the pair as they made a spectacle of themselves with their late-night show.

A group of British women watching from a distance were heard shouting: ‘Fight, fight, fight’ as they pushed and slapped each other.

It remains unclear what sparked the violence – but one of the women appeared very unsteady on her feet when she was lifted off the ground.

The fight was broken up with the help of locals – police are not thought to have been called.

The women were seen slapping each other (Picture: SolarPix)

It happened on Saturday night in Cala d’Or, on Majorca’s south-east coast , in an area packed with bars and restaurants.

It unfolded just hours after regional government officials announced a tightening-up of legislation designed to stamp out drunken tourism in party resorts on the island – including parts of Magaluf.

Under modified legislation announced on Friday, British tourists have been warned they face fines of £1,300 if they are caught drinking alcohol on the street in places like Magaluf party strip Punta Ballena.

Shops that sell alcohol have also been ordered to close after 9.30pm.

The areas covered by the modification to a four-year-old regional government decree against the so-called ‘tourism of excess’ are roughly the same as before.

They do stretch to include some of Majorca and Ibiza’s brashest resorts including Magaluf and San Antonio, which are most popular with Brits.

Saturday night’s incident is also being seized on by campaigners protesting against tourist overcrowding.

Demonstrations took place across the Canary Islands last month, and on May 25, one is planned in central Palma.

Protestors will seek to make their voices heard using the slogan: ‘Majorca is not for sale’ as they call on their politicians to tackle some of the problems they say are making their lives a misery.

These include congested roads and lack of access to affordable housing.

Always Ready to Order

Joe DiPietro takes us back to old Rome.

A pair of hands holds a menu with a beer and a plate of snacks nearby.

By Deb Amlen

Jump to: Today’s Theme | Tricky Clues

THURSDAY PUZZLE — Last week I wrote about how constructors’ brains fascinate me because they can come up with unusual, creative ideas for what is essentially a two-dimensional pastime that simply involves crossing words. These puzzle makers have elevated the craft to include three dimensional puzzles and visuals that delight the eye, as well as unparalleled wordplay, mostly enabled — sorry, make that encouraged — by Will Shortz, Joel Fagliano and their merry band of editors.

Creativity is one thing, but how do some of these constructors manage to be so prolific? I asked Sam Ezersky, an editor of the Crossword, who has had 55 puzzles appear in The New York Times in eight years. It boils down to noticing things that are not readily visible to others, and setting them aside for future use.

“As Will Shortz says, they have flexible minds,” he said of these constructors.

“I jot things down in my Notes app all the time,” he continued, “just properties of phrases I notice. Some things I’m able to turn into fully fleshed out, fun puzzles.

“Your mind just becomes increasingly attuned to thinking ‘Hey, imagine if you could take that phrase and use it to explain this sort of wordplay.’”

Today’s Theme

Joe DiPietro offers four theme entries where Roman numerals substitute for parts of phrases. The theme clues sort of hint at this trick by ending in “ … in old Rome?”

For example, at 16A, the answer to the clue “Used extreme caution, in old Rome?” should be “walked on e ggshells,” but the crossings demand that we write it as WALKED I GGSHELLS. The I in that phrase is the Roman numeral one, and it stands in for the letters O, N and E.

Let’s do another one. At 57A, the answer to the clue “Do a judge’s job, in old Rome?” should be “w eigh t he evidence,” but we need to write it as W VIII HEEVIDENCE. The VIII stands in for the letters E, I, G, H and T, or eight.

It took me a while to catch on, but I really enjoyed figuring out Mr. DiPietro’s theme. There’s nothing like a good brain flossing to get one ready for the tough Friday and Saturday puzzles.

Tricky Clues

9A. You thought that the “Body part where a sock might go?” was a foot, didn’t you? This sock is not the other half of a pair that didn’t get lost in the wash. It’s a punch, and the target is the CHIN.

19A. “Cross state” would be one word if you are traveling across a state, but in this puzzle, the two-word clue is hinting at being in a state of crossness. The answer is IRE.

26A. “Where F comes before E?” refers to the gas gauge (from full to empty) in a CAR.

44A. An ERG is a unit that measures energy or work. I think “What a piece of work!” is a clever clue.

45A. At first, I read “Surname in the 1946 western ‘My Darling Clementine’” as a reference to the song, and couldn’t figure out for the life of me what EARP had to do with it. It turns out that this clue refers to the film starring Henry Fonda and Victor Mature. The moral of this story is “Always read the clues twice.”

64A. This is great wordplay. “Always ready to order?” has nothing to do with having committed a menu to memory. It’s about ordering people around, and the answer is BOSSY.

14D. In publishing, “proofs” are the preliminary versions of a book or article. The person “who might bear the burden of proof?” is an EDITOR.

22D. I’m guessing that the “Apt Greek letter for a University of Pennsylvania fraternity is PHI, because it is sort of short for Philadelphia. If I’m not even close, please feel free to ridicule me in the comments.

51D. I was not familiar with BEERY as an adjective for the “smell of a pub,” but it certainly seems apt.

52D. Is writing SWAK, a “Love note acronym” short for “sealed with a kiss,” a thing anymore? Maybe for those who write love letters by hand.

56D. The “Nixon nix” is a VETO. Why Nixon? My guesses: 1) Former President Nixon was known for vetoing important acts of legislation, and 2) alliteration.

Constructor Notes

This puzzle started out as a blackjack idea with a revealer of “double down,” where the Roman numerals doubled as they were read from top to bottom in the grid. Ultimately, the payoff wasn’t that great. Of course, the casino was Caesar’s. Finding a 15-letter entry with IV was the most difficult. I originally submitted the puzzle with circles around the numerals, but like it better without them!
