Old Trafford Stadium Tour – Theatre of Dreams

Manchester United are one of the most famous football teams in the world and they play at Old Trafford.  Reasons to take an Old Trafford stadium tour include;

  • You’re a huge Manchester United fan
  • One of the biggest football teams in the world
  • Largest stadium in the north
  • Largest club stadium in the UK
  • Theatre of Dreams
  • Learn about Old Trafford in World War II

Due to the popularity of Manchester United, I recommend you book the Old Trafford stadium tour online in advance .  Moreover, if you’re looking for something extra special, consider a Legends Tour .

You can choose a hotel in Manchester City Center and take a tram to the stadium.  Alternatively, there are several hotels close to the stadium .

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Location

Old Trafford is in southwestern Manchester, adjacent to Salford Quays and Old Trafford cricket ground.  You can take the tram from central Manchester to Old Trafford station.  From there, it’s a short walk past the cricket ground and along Sir Matt Busby Way to the stadium.  Alternatively, I recommend the Media City stop if you also plan to visit Media City UK.

Holy Trinity Statue

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Holy Trinity Statue

In front of the East Stand are 2 important statues.  Firsty, is the statue of Sir Matt Busby who is arguably the greatest ever Manchester United manager.  Opposite Sir Matt Busby statue is the United Trinity statue.  This features 3 Man United legends, George Best, Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton.  Sir Bobby Charlton was one of the survivors of the Munich Air Disaster.  All 3 of these went on to win the European Cup in 1968 with Manchester United.  For this reason, Manchester United was the first English team to win the European Cup.  Did you know the first British team to win the European Cup was Celtic in 1967.

Berlin Air Disaster Memorial

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Munich Air Disaster Memorial

On 6th February the Manchester United team were returning home from Belgrade.  As a matter of fact, they had just qualified for the European Cup semi final.  The plane landed in Munich to refuel.  Due to severe weather the plane crashed on take off.  As a result, 23 of the 46 on board lost their lives including several first team players.  Manager Sir Matt Busby was onboard and survived.  He went on to rebuild the team and Manchester United won the European Cup 10 years later in 1968.  Finally, did you know there is also a Berlin Air Disaster memorial in the Red Star Belgrade Museum in Serbia ?

Sir Alex Ferguson Statue

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Alex Ferguson Statue

Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the most successful and respected managers worldwide.  He retired in 2013 after 26 years in charge of Man United.  During this period he won 13 Premier Leagues and 2 Champions Leagues.  As a matter of fact he won a total of 38 trophies during his Manchester United reign.  Not a lot of people remember this but Sir Alex Ferguson also took Scotland to the World Cup Finals in 1986.  You can see his statue outside the Sir Alex Ferguson stand which holds over 26,000 spectators.

Old Trafford Stadium Tour Meeting Point

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Meeting Point

The stadium tour starts from inside the Sir Alex Ferguson stand.  When you take the stadium tour you also have access to the Manchester United Museum.  Some of the historic turnstiles from 1910 are on display in the museum.  In fact, there are still some in use throughout the stadium which work perfectly despite being over 100 years old.

Manchester United Museum

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Manchester United Museum

As you would imagine, a football club with as much history as Manchester United has a huge museum.  In addition, the Manchester United trophy room is huge.  The museum takes you from the formation of the club, through the war years and up to the present day.

Old Trafford Facts

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Facts

Old Trafford is the largest club stadium in the United Kingdom.  It’s also the 3rd largest stadium in the UK after Wembley and Twickenham .  The capacity is 74,994 spectators and it sells out regularly.  It’s often referred to as the Theatre of Dreams which was definitely true throughout the Sir Alex Ferguson era.  The nickname, Theatre of Dreams was created by Busby Babe, Sir Bobby Charlton.  Lastly, Old Trafford was a 1966 World Cup stadium and hosted Portugal, Bulgaria and Hungary in Group 3.

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - VIP Seats

Imagine the greats who have enjoyed a game from the VIP section.  Prince Harry, Sir Alex Ferguson and David Beckham have all enjoyed a match from which are arguably the best seats in the house.  Furthermore, you could stretch it and add Victoria Beckham to the list!

Away Team Dressing Rooms

Unfortunately, the away team dressing rooms are not part of the Old Trafford stadium tour.  Due to the fact this is a 5 star venue I expect them to be of excellent quality.  Unlike the away team dressing rooms at St James’ Park , home of northern rivals Newcastle United.

Home Team Dressing Rooms

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Home Team Dressing Rooms

I visited Old Trafford towards the end of the Jose Mourinho reign.  Although he had an unsuccessful reign at the club, he was highly influential in the design of the home team dressing room.  As well as featuring the homely Manchester United logo it also features state of the art analysis equipment.  Lastly, you’re welcome to take a photo next to your favorite players shirt.

Players Tunnel

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Players Tunnel

You will enter the Old Trafford stadium through the famous players tunnel.  The guide will play the entrance music which is ‘This is the one’ by Stone Roses.  It became the entrance music in 2000 after a request by Gary Neville.  Although the song has nothing to do with football, Stone Roses are a Manchester band.

Pitch Side and Dugouts

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Pitch Side and Dugouts

One of the most identifiable parts of Old Trafford are the dugouts.  You’re welcome to sit and take photos from both the home as well as the away end.  Do you remember the infamous moment when Arsene Wenger was sent into the crowd for kicking a bottle?  You’re welcome to stand there and recreate the moment!

Old Trafford Time Capsule

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Time Capsule

In between the dugouts is the Old Trafford time capsule.  It was created in 2010 to celebrate the 100th birthday of the stadium.  An interesting fact is that relatives of Archibald Leitch helped bury the time capsule.  Archibald Leitch was in fact the original architect of Old Trafford.  He also designed other famous stadiums in the UK including Anfield , Ibrox and Hillsborough .  Did you know there’s also a time capsule at the Emirates Stadium ?

What Remains at Old Trafford from the World War II Bombings?

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - World War II

Old Trafford was bombed in 1941 by the Germans.  Not only Old Trafford but the whole city of Manchester was heavily bombed in what became known as the Manchester Blitz.  As a matter of fact, Old Trafford was almost completely destroyed and became abandoned until 1949.  What remains of the original stadium built in 1910?  The narrow tunnel between the dugouts is all which remains from the original stadium.

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Press Room

The current Manchester United manager will talk to the press after the match.  You’re welcome to sit in the iconic Manchester United press room and pose for photos.  You may remember Jose Mourinho made many infamous speeches from this room!

Manchester United Club Shop

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams - Old Trafford Club Shop

Once the tour has finished you can explore the huge Manchester United Club Shop.  Here you can find virtually anything you can imagine stamped with a Manchester United logo.

Enjoy the Old Trafford Stadium Tour

Old Trafford Stadium Tour - Theatre of Dreams

Enjoy your visit to the Theatre of Dreams, Old Trafford.  Whether you’re a football fan or not, it’s a iconic place to visit in Manchester.

Manchester United appoint designers behind Tottenham’s stadium to create ‘new’ 100,000-seater Old Trafford

Manchester United Commemorate the 66th Anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster

Manchester United have appointed Populous – the designers behind Tottenham ’s new stadium – to design a new 100,000-seater stadium for the Red Devils.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has appointed a taskforce that includes Lord Seb Coe and Gary Neville to oversee plans for the future of the stadium and its surrounding area.

Untied have two options; either refurbishing their current ground at a cost of around £1bn or to build a bigger stadium on adjacent land for around £2bn.

Though the second option would require private and public funding, Ratcliffe favours a new build.

United could easily sell out a capacity of around 95,000 for most matches and that figure would rise even further for bigger matches, such as last week’s FA Cup win against Liverpool.

Elevated view of Old Trafford

Ratcliffe suggested the capacity of the new stadium would be at least 90,000 and possibly as high as 100,000 in a podcast he did last week.

‘If we build a completely new ground, it would be state of the art, world-class, [have a capacity of] 90,000 or even 100,000,’ said Ratcliffe. ‘I think that then provides a platform for some of the big competitions in the north of England. Why shouldn’t England play in the north? Why is the FA Cup final always in the south?’

And the Daily Mail say Populous are overseeing designs for a new stadium.

Some of these designs have already been seen by Ratcliffe and INEOS.

But the club will wait on the recommendations of the taskforce, which have more to consider than simply just the stadium.

They will be looking at the wider area and the community around Old Trafford, with plans for housing, transport links and hotels.

Spurs’ new stadium opened in 2019 after three years of building – though the plans were a decade in the making.

The cost of Spurs’ stadium increased significantly over the course of the plans, with it topping out at around £1.1bn.

However, it is widely considered the best stadium in the Premier League now.

RZD Arena (Lokomotiv Stadium)

RZD Arena

Club: FC Lokomotiv Moscow | Opening: 2002 | Capacity: 28,800 seats

History and description

RZD Arena, previously known as Lokomotiv Stadium, was built between 2000 and 2002, and opened on 5 July 2002 with a match between Lokomotiv and Ural.

The roof of the stadium is held up by four concrete pylons. The stadium holds 60 VIP boxes, each having between 10 and 20 seats.

Lokomotiv Stadium has been regularly used by other Russian sides needing a temporary home such as Anzhi in the Europa League and Spartak Moscow for the 2013-14 season while waiting for the completion of the Otkritie Arena .

In 2017, Lokomotiv Stadium changed name to RZD Arena following a naming rights sponsorship deal.

How to get to RZD Arena

RZD Arena is located in the north-east of the city of Moscow, between Moscow’s third ring road and the MKAD ring road at about 9 kilometres from Moscow’s city centre.

The stadium can be reached with  metro line 1 (the red line). It is an approximate 20-minute ride from stations Biblioteka or Okhotnyy Ryad in Moscow’s centre. Get off at station Cherkizovskaya, which lies right next to the stadium.

Address: Bolshaya Cherkizovskaya 125 A, 107553, Moscow

Eat, drink, and sleep near RZD Arena

RZD Arena is located on the outskirts of Moscow in a mainly residential area mixed up with some light industry. There is some small retail around where you may be able to get something to eat, but in general it is wiser to eat and drink in central Moscow.

There is a pocket of hotels not far south of the stadium near Izmailovsky Park, from where you can walk in 15 to 20 minutes to the stadium. They are near Partizanskaya metro station, which provides quick access to central Moscow.

The Izmailovo complex offers different hotels with different prices, though in most cases very affordable. These include the Izmailovo Beta Hotel , Izmailovo Gamma Hotel , and Izmailovo Alpha Hotel . The Best Western Vega Hotel is another option.

Lokomotiv Moscow Tickets

Tickets for Lokomotiv games can be bought online , or at the ticket office at the RZD Arena. Lokomotiv sell out very few matches.

Lokomotiv have divided their home matches into two pricing categories. Ticket prices for the cheapest category start at RUB 250 for a seat behind the goal and range up to RUB 800 for a central seat at the main stand. Prices are increased for high-profile matches to between RUB 500 and RUB 1,200.

RZD Arena stadium tours

Man Utd bring in stadium designers as Sir Jim Ratcliffe weighs up what a 100,000 'new Old Trafford' looks like

M an Utd are weighing up about making a huge new 'Old Trafford' that could fit 100,000 fans. The people who made Tottenham's stadium have now presented suggestions.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, aiming to turbo charge Man Utd wants the team to have a really good stadium. He said on a podcast that they could make a new one with lots of space for fans. He asked why big football games always happen in the south and said the north is just as important. He thinks there should be a big stadium in the north too. The Daily Mail says that the stadium designers, called Populous, have plans ready for making Old Trafford better or building a new one.

"You have got this opportunity if you choose to, to build a completely new ground, because we have got enough space," Ratcliffe said. "If you built a completely new ground it would absolutely be state-of-the-art, world class, 90,000 or maybe even 100,000 that then provides a platform for some of the big competitions in the north of England.", reports the Mirror .

"Why do England always play in the south? Why is the FA Cup final always in the south? Why can't the Champions League final be in the north occasionally? Football in the north is just as important as it is in the south, arguably more so, and the people in the north pay their taxes, so why do we have Wembley, Twickenham, Wimbledon etc in the south."

"What have we got in the north? There's a strong argument to build a 'Wembley of the north'."

Populous, a renowned architectural firm, has reportedly been hired by the Glazers to draft plans for Manchester United's future. These plans are now being examined by Ratcliffe's INEOS team. Earlier this month, a task force was formed to explore the club's options. This group includes former United captain Gary Neville, Lord Sebastian Coe, and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.

Neville confessed to Sky Sports that the "commercial aspect" will be the key factor in Ratcliffe's decision. He said: "I think everyone knows that it's one of two options; either renovate and refurbish the existing Old Trafford or develop a brand new stadium next to Old Trafford,".

He added: "Every structural solution is different. Until you get into the meat of the work and see what is really brought forward then I don't think anyone has the answer. That's the reason that the group has been set up, to help answer some of those questions."

Neville concluded: "The work that goes on and the findings of the work that goes down [will help form a decision], but it will also come down to the commercial aspect of what will be afforded. We know that a new stadium well, a refurbishment costs a lot of money but a brand new stadium costs more."
