Residents welcome new names of Abu Dhabi’s Tourist Club Area and Zayed City

Abu dhabi municipality has given arabic titles to the city’s oldest areas with immediate effect and told government and private bodies to refer to it by its new name from now..

Haji Mohammad, an expatriate from Afghanistan who has baked bread in the Tourist Club district of Abu Dhabi for 17 years, now does so in Al Zahiyah after the municipality changed the area’s name. Zayed City in the capital has also been renamed Al Danah. Silvia Razgova / The National

ABU DHABI // The Tourist Club Area, once the city's centre for entertainment and recreation, is no more.

Abu Dhabi Municipality renamed one of the city’s oldest areas effective on Monday, and told government and private bodies to refer to it by its new name – Al Zahiyah.

It also changed the name of Zayed City to Al Danah.

The area became known as Tourist Club when a beach was built by the Government in the 1970s to provide more recreation for people in Abu Dhabi.

The beach was just left of Le Meridien hotel and included entertainment such as bowling and ice-skating.

While the beach section no longer exists as such, the name has lingered on.

Residents said they had been happy with the old name, and changing it to Al Zahiyah, which means “colourful” in Arabic, could initially lead to confusion for tourists.

“The name, of course, will lead to confusion among residents and people who travel to Abu Dhabi from outside, who could think this is some new locality,” said Mustapha Ahmed, who runs a shop in the area.

“For some time we will have to use both names, but I believe the public will gradually get familiarised.”

Haji Mohammad, who has lived in the Tourist Club for 17 years, said the old name reflected the many nationalities who lived there and the huge variety of restaurants that operated in the area.

“The area has been very popular among tourists as it offered visitors a variety of dining options, whether it is Arabic, Chinese, Japanese or European,” said Mr Mohammad, who runs a bakery.

“Tourist Club has a large number of coffee shops, restaurants and hotels. Tourists love to live in the heart of the city. The area has been the heart of Abu Dhabi for decades.

“The area also was a hub for traders. But I welcome the new name as it sounds good to me as well.”

Mohammed Rasheed welcomed the move but also warned against possible confusion.

“I love the old name but a new name for such a famous place will create problems for visitors,” said Mr Rasheed, who has lived in the area for 10 years.

In November last year, Abu Dhabi Municipality announced the renaming of 14 major streets in the capital under the Onwani (my address) project. The municipality said the names had been selected to reflect the country’s history and culture and said last month that plans were under way for a public awareness campaign on the new address system.

In Al Danah, people said they liked that the area had been named after the Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed.

But the new name, which means pearl in Arabic, was also welcome.

“Zayed was a good name as it was attached to our father of the nation. But the Government has decided to change it so there would be some wider interest to the community,” said one Emirati resident, Salem Al Harethi.

Nagheeb Al Hassan, a Lebanese national, who lives on Zayed the First Street, said the Arabic names were important.

“It happens everywhere around the world that old names changed to new ones as per the Government’s policy. We just need to adopt them,” said Mr Al Hassan.

“The new names are pure Arabic names and I love them. This is an Arab country so names should have an Arabic origin.”

Where to Eat and Drink in Milan Right Now

A new generation of bars, restaurants and bakeries are reinvigorating the Italian city’s food scene.

Late last December, Milan entered an unofficial state of mourning when the beloved Brera-neighborhood restaurant La Latteria — known for its spicy lemon pasta and strict no-reservations policy — closed after 58 years of service. But despite this loss, the city’s food scene has never been more vibrant. The last six months have seen a wave of new bars, restaurants and cafes — many of them run by young people from the fashion and design worlds — open their doors. With them, a fresh energy has been injected into a city better known for old-school haunts like the cocktail institution Bar Basso and the four-decade-old cafe Fioraio Bianchi. Here, seven new arrivals, from a revived family-run trattoria to a Lebanese-inspired dessert shop.

Left: the exterior of a bar, with a curved concrete facade, illuminated with red light. Right: a bar space with a long kitchen island and a bouquet of flowers and an open shelf with rows of glasses.

The hand-painted signage outside Bar Nico, in the quiet Acquabella district, remains unchanged from its days as a Bolognese pastificio (a pasta maker specializing in recipes from Bologna), but inside, the place has been transformed into a modern bar, where a steel and concrete counter anchors a sparse room furnished with wooden bistro-style tables. Founders Chiara Pino, a model, and Riccardo Ganelli, who previously worked for the fashion brand Sunnei, were inspired by the lively neighborhood wine bars they found on their travels to Paris and Barcelona. They’ve curated a menu of natural wines mostly from small producers in France and Italy: Temps des Cerises from the Languedoc-Roussillon; Contrada Contro, made near Monti Sibillini in the Marche; De L’avant, from Les Varrons in France. Also on offer are a selection of nonalcoholic kombuchas and simple small plates like a radicchio and balsamic salad, canned mussels in escabeche sauce and raw sausage from Bra, a town in Italy’s Piedmont region, served with spicy mustard and arranged in the shape of a smiley face.

Yoji Tokuyoshi, the former sous chef at the revered Osteria Francescana in Modena, about 100 miles south, opened Pan with the restaurateur Alice Yamada last April after the shokupan (Japanese milk bread) at Bentoteca, his Japanese fine dining restaurant in the Ticinese neighborhood, began to garner attention. Pan serves pastries and desserts made with a mix of European and Japanese techniques and flavors, like flaky miso cinnamon rolls, Basque-style matcha cheesecake and anpan, sweet rolls filled with red bean paste. There’s also lunch — and, on the weekends, brunch — with an ever-changing menu that has included dishes like avocado toast with poached eggs and spicy shichimi powder on shokupan; pappa al pomodoro, the traditional Tuscan tomato and bread stew; and omurice, a Japanese dish that combines an omelet with fried rice. The mint green interiors, designed by the local architecture firm Studio Wok, include a bar made of gridded fiberglass panels and rows of pale green textiles along the ceiling inspired by noren , the fabric room dividers commonly used in Japan.

Located on Via Mario Pichi — a quiet side street in the Navigli district, a popular nightlife hub — the restaurant Gloria was opened in September by Rocco Galasso and Luca Gennati, the longtime managers of the natural wine bar enoteca/naturale in the nearby Ticinese neighborhood, and Tommaso Melilli, a chef and food writer. They took over a sixteen-year-old family-run trattoria and left things — including the name, which belongs to the former owner — largely as they were, save for a few decorative additions, such as a zinc-clad counter and floral William Morris wallpaper. The dining room feels like a standard trattoria, but in the kitchen, Melilli modernizes traditional Italian recipes using seasonal ingredients and unconventional flavors. Past dishes have included pumpkin risotto infused with bitter almond, pork-stuffed cabbage rolls with pomegranate, and pasta with chickpeas and smoked chestnuts.

Trattoria del Ciumbia

This intimate bistro opened on Via Fiori Chiari — a narrow cobblestone alleyway in the fashionable Brera neighborhood filled with bars and restaurants — in December. The menu is packed with homey Milanese favorites: cassoeula, a slow-cooked pork and cabbage stew; bruscitti, beef ragu simmered in red wine and served over soft polenta; and mondeghili nella verza, a northern Italian take on cabbage rolls. But the real draw is the atmosphere. The retro-futuristic interiors were designed by the renowned local firm Dimorestudio and were inspired by the traditional Brera trattorias of the 1960s, when the neighborhood was a bohemian artists’ hub. Guests sit on Dimorestudio’s minimal steel and woven straw Rei chairs amid walnut paneling and colorful floor tiles.

Oslo Made in Heaven

Sisters Yasmine and Julie Audi opened this dessert and ice cream shop in February, following in the footsteps of their mother, Nayla Audi, who established the original Beirut branch in 1997. The family also previously lived in Los Angeles, where they ran the popular Fairfax District bakery Milk, which closed in 2021. In Milan, the small storefront is on a quiet lane not far from the San Babila metro station. Inside, shimmering gold mosaic tiles depict a sunburst that runs from the floor to the glass dessert cabinet, where fluffy angel food cake piled high with pink, rose-flavored icing is stored. (The cake can be topped with sesame-flavored cotton candy or matcha whipped cream.) The shop also stocks ice cream and sorbet in flavors like orchid, jasmine or coffee toffee crunch, as well as handmade Loukoum candies — otherwise known as Turkish delight — available in rose or miske, a pine-like flavor derived from the mastic tree.

Bicchierino Bar

Set on a busy commercial street in the southwest neighborhood of Giambellino, Bicchierino has a similar origin story to Bar Nico: The relaxed local wine bar was founded by a group of five friends who also work in other creative industries, including photo production, and wanted to create an intimate space for their community to gather. The mismatched furniture, industrial shelving, and long wooden counter scattered with bottles more closely resemble the kitchen of a loft style apartment in Berlin than a typical Milanese bar. In addition to a rotating menu of small-batch natural wines, there are unfussy dishes, often made from ingredients found in the nearby Lorenteggio Market, like potato salad and artichokes served with pecorino and Parmesan cream. Occasionally, on the weekends, guest chefs take over the kitchen. The Argentine chef Facundo Castellani, who’s worked at the three-Michelin star Restaurant Mirazur in Menton, France, recently served a set meal of onion and smoked cheese empanadas; spicy aguachile with whitefish, apple and kiwi; and tacos al pastor.

Via Stampa is the first Milanese restaurant from the 28-year-old winemaker Marco Guzzetti, whose organic farm and winery, Podere del Maro, opened in Liguria in 2018. The 50-seat space overlooks the Roman-era Basilica San Lorenzo Maggiore in Cinque Vie, the city’s historic center, yet it feels more like a Parisian bistro than an Italian trattoria. The dining room features a carved wooden bar at the entrance, which opens up to an enfilade of sunlit rooms with white walls and pale parquet floors. The menu — just as pared back and elegant as the décor — focuses on small, seasonal plates that in the spring include fried artichokes with Parmesan fondue and mint, and ravioli stuffed with borage, an earthy tasting wild herb.

The minimalist cake trend is here to stay. Get in line at this viral Koreatown bakery

Ellie You spent years dreaming up the Harucake universe, down to the color of the walls — the same soft, faint yellow as butter that has been creamed for hours. The bakery walls were painted three times to get the color exactly right.

You’s vision for her Koreatown bakery was so clear that she didn’t need to hire an architect. She was meticulous about what she wanted: the chic, large glass front doors, a photo booth near the entrance that prints customers’ happy images on stark white receipt paper, a pastry case at the angular counter displaying her minimalist cakes as if they were jewels.

Ellie You, owner of Harucake, holds a slice of mugwort injeolmi cake.

On weekends, crowds might spend two hours waiting in line at Harucake , located in a strip mall at the corner of 6th and Kenmore streets. (Weekdays are a bit easier to navigate, but the bakery typically sells out every day.) According to You, the bakery is an “accidental” TikTok sensation — though one could argue the aesthetics of the brand primed it for social media success.

When she opened in August, a friend of You’s posted a video of her cakes to TikTok, and they watched the numbers rapidly climb. Within days, You’s nascent bricks-and-mortar business was a viral sensation.

It’s not surprising that customers are lining up for You’s cakes in flavors such as Green Grape Yogurt, Strawberry Milk Cream and Lotus Mocha. You is a master of the Korean minimalist cake-decorating style popularized by bakeries throughout Korea, images from which have persistently flooded Instagram over the last couple of years.

The cakes are a celebration of pastel colorways, cursive writing and decorative elements like tiny hearts, mini fruits or animals, or small flowers with lots of negative space between them. There is often a pop of something playful and childlike like a smiley face, or Harucake’s omnipresent dog-like mascot OO-U (pronounced oo-you), which means “milk” in Korean; OO-U is actually a cookie that loves the milk cream frosting for the cakes so much that he is covered in it.

Made from layers of fluffy génoise sponge and frosted with airy milk cream, the cakes hit that “not too sweet” sugar level deeply prized when it comes to Asian baked goods. You sells her cakes by the slice, by the standard full cake and as “lunch box” or “bento cakes,” another popular trend that took off during the pandemic: creating mini cakes that are essentially meant for one to two people.

The viral success of You’s bakery, which she started out of her home in 2019, may have been a surprise, but everything about Harucake is intentional. Raised in Korea before relocating to the States to finish her education, You first pursued a law degree, in an effort to please her parents, before pivoting to design school, even though she always loved baking. At 29, miserable in her graphic design job, she decided to quit and work in a bakery part-time as she set about dreaming up what would eventually become Harucake, and a fulfillment of her childhood dream.

With Harucake, You highlights and celebrates the Korean flavors she was raised on. “My goal is to make Americans fall in love with Korean cakes,” she says. While the flavors available in the glass pastry case always rotate, they include options like Green Grape Yogurt, which features layers of vanilla sponge layered with a tangy lemon yogurt cream and sliced fresh green grapes; Matcha Strawberry, which has striking layers of green matcha sponge, pure milk cream, matcha cream and fresh strawberries; and Mugwort Injeolmi, which You says is the most popular flavor and her personal favorite. The cake is made with layers of sponge flavored with mugwort, an aromatic green plant used frequently in Korean cooking, stuffed with cream and plenty of injeolmi — or roasted soybean powder — and topped with a house-made injeolmi crumble.

The cakes at Harucake might be minimalist in nature, but they are not minimalist in price, with slices going for around $15, standard full cakes retailing for $70 and lunchbox cakes retailing for $30. “It’s the biggest complaint we get,” You says of the price point. “But we only use the best ingredients.” Even though the bakery now has a staff of 15, she still personally shops for the organic dairy it uses and spends extra money on a super fine flour that helps create the texture she loves.

Still, the prices have not stopped the crowds, and Harucake, which You says means “from the heart,” sells more than 1,000 cakes a month. It could sell more, but scaling up has been a slow process. The morning team currently bakes the cakes fresh, every single day. Even if it means they run out in the afternoon, You doesn’t want to compromise on quality.

More than six months in, You still considers Harucake to be in “soft open.” She is meticulous about the tiniest of details, from how you are greeted (with a smile and an explanation of each cake flavor) to what temperature the cakes are served at (they should always be slightly chilled). You also still insists on hand-lettering each cake herself.

Ellie You, owner of Harucake, decorates a cake at her shop.

“I want to make sure we nail every part of the bakery experience.” To ensure this, You works 16-hour days at the bakery, and then manages the bakery’s social media when she gets home.

The Korean minimalist cake trend has jumped beyond Korean bakers to bakers of Asian heritage — especially in Los Angeles. Domi, a pop-up bakery owned by pastry chefs Evelyn Ling and Joe Cheng Reed, also makes charming minimalist bento cakes in Asian-inspired flavors, something the pair added to their menu during the pandemic.

“My sister called me and begged for me to make them so she could gift them to her friends,” says Ling, who is Chinese American. The small cakes, decorated in a minimalist style, quickly took off as celebrations also became smaller.

Kylie Miyamoto, the Japanese American baker who opened the Tustin-based online cake shop Kymoto Co. in 2021, says that this style of cake remains incredibly popular — she still sells around 40 cakes a week.

The ‘flat croissant’ is a pastry abomination. I’m eating them anyway

Have you seen the ‘flat croissants’ all over social media? Where to find them — if you think they’re worth trying.

None of the bakeries have a plan to stop making these particular cakes anytime soon. Celebrations might be larger again, but this style of cake is fully in demand. Ling says customers buy them to give away as presents, or as smash cakes for babies’ birthdays. Customers also continue to find these pastel colorways “uplifting,” says Miyamoto. “As a cake artist, I strive to create edible works of art that bring joy.”
