These Are the Best and Worst Times to Hit the Road This Holiday Season

Holiday travelers, take note

most dangerous travel day

If you're planning a holiday road trip over the next few days, be prepared for heavy traffic.

This year, more than 109 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more between Dec. 23 and Jan. 2, according to a new study from American Automobile Association (AAA) and transportation analytics company INRIX. Of that number, just over 100 million are planning to reach their holiday destinations by car—a 27.6 percent increase from 2020.

“Americans who canceled their vacations in 2020 want to gather with family and friends for the holidays this year, although they will still be mindful of the pandemic and the new omicron variant,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel. “With vaccines widely available, conditions are much different and many people feel a greater level of comfort with travel.”

While the roads will be near pre-pandemic levels this holiday season, there are two days in particular that travelers need to be especially mindful of. "The worst days for delay are actually right before New Year's ... so the 27th and 28th," Bob Pishue, a transportation analyst at INRIX, told USA TODAY .

The best days for travel? Not surprisingly, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

"With kids out of school and many Americans taking extended time off for the holidays, drivers will experience incremental delays throughout the week. Although congestion will be overall lighter than normal, knowing when and where major delays will likely happen will help save time and reduce stress this holiday season,” said Pishue in the AAA report.

While INRIX predicts "only marginal delays overall" the week between Christmas and New Year's, the company says that the biggest metro areas in the U.S. may see "more than double the delays versus typical drive times. The New York City metro area—specifically I-278 South from I-495 to 3rd Avenue—will experience the biggest delays, with a 358 percent increase above average on Dec. 27 between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

AAA concedes that their predictions could fluctuate over the next few days: With the U.S. seeing a seven-day moving average of 125,000 new COVID cases per day, we may end up seeing fewer drivers on the road as would-be travelers cancel their trips.

However, Dr. Anthony Fauci, chief director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) assured travelers during an appearance on CNN on Wednesday : "I believe if people follow the recommendations of the CDC about indoor masking, take the advice of getting vaccinated and getting boosted, we should be fine for the holidays, and we should enjoy it with our family and our friends."

Drive Your Fleet Forward

The most dangerous times of day, week, and year for drivers.

most dangerous travel day

If there's one thing a fleet driver knows, it's that certain times of day are easier to drive than others. In the quiet of the early morning or late at night when everyone is still asleep is the most peaceful time. Freeways are almost empty and you can enjoy many roads to yourself. But people rarely consider the opposite; the most dangerous times to drive. A study of crashes by day and time  have revealed that some times are far more dangerous to drive than others.

New call-to-action

What is the most dangerous time to drive, or the most dangerous day of the year? Drivers are at the most risk when the roads are packed with people who are stressed out and distracted. Any time these conditions are met, more accidents are likely to occur. These statistics can reveal important nuances of road safety to help keep your fleet safe during high-risk times.

The Most Dangerous Time of Day

  • End-of-Day Rush Hour
  • Late on Weekends

The most dangerous time of day to be on the road is in the late afternoon to evening. However, the exact hours vary by season and the day of the week. For example, roads are more dangerous between 8 pm to 8 am on the weekends, while midnight to 8 AM is one of the quietest times on weekdays.

In the spring and summer, the most  fatal crashes  occur between 8pm to midnight when people are more likely to be intoxicated, but  non-fatal crashes  are more likely to happen between noon and 4pm when people are out running errands and filling the roads during the day.

In contrast, colder months from November to March see a rise in fatal crashes between 4pm and 8pm when the most people are out on icy roads at the same time.

Typically, risk rises during rush hour, but especially in the early evening when everyone is stressed out from work and distracted by the day's events. The risk of rush hour (4pm to 8pm on weekdays is rivaled only by the risk of driving during party hours on weekends.

What is the Most Dangerous Day to Drive?

Typically, the most dangerous day of the week to drive is Saturday. This is because everyone is trying to get their errands and "fun time" done in a rush. People are taking unfamiliar routes outside their commute. They are traveling with distracting friends, lovers, or children in the car. They are in a hurry, and as the evening gets late, the percentage of intoxicated drivers will increase.

However, Friday and Saturday are close seconds in risk for the same reasons. Late afternoon to early evening on friday is especially dangerous as people rush home from work stress to begin their weekend.

While these studies don't cover holidays, it should be noted that holiday travel days are often higher risk. More people are traveling, taking unusual routes, and in a distracted state.

The Deadliest Day in 2021

One interesting and terrifying fact is that  August 7th  was the single deadliest year to drive in 2021, according to injury report statistics. The day meets a record 201 deaths from car accidents on that date.

Which Month is the Deadliest to Be On the Road?

  • July - October

Each year, the statistics vary on the  most dangerous month for driving . However, the general trend suggests that July through October typically have the most vehicle-related deaths per 100 vehicle miles traveled. In 2020, October barely ranked higher than August in terms of deadliness. In 2020, July, August, and October shared the top rank. In 2017, July clearly takes the cake. However, this span of months is always at the peak of the chart for the most deadly car accidents.

The safest months tend to be January and February, when most people are traveling less and driving more carefully on icy roads.

Keeping Your Fleet Safe

Fleet drivers are on the road every day, at times of day determined by their hours of business. While it is impractical to avoid these "most dangerous" times for drivers, it is possible to increase awareness and safety protocols during this time. Just knowing when the risk is highest can help your drivers watch out for known dangers and drive defensively when the need arises. • The 5 Worst Travel Days for 2024

During certain times of the year, traveling from one destination to the next involves overcrowded airports, delayed airline flights, vehicle traffic on the highways, and millions of grumpy passengers no matter which direction you’re headed. To help maintain your love for travel, or just your sanity during the trip, it’s beneficial to be aware of the five worst travel days in the United States – and plan your trip accordingly.

1. Before and After Christmas (December 23-26)

The annual stats from AAA are in and nearly 115 million Americans hit the road or sky during the holiday season of 2023, the second-highest number of travelers since 2000. That astonishing figure includes those getting around by plane, train, and automobile throughout the last two weeks of the year. Because of the prevalence of traveling over the holidays, two days before and the day after Christmas hold steady as the top worst travel days of the year, every year.

Compare personal loans to help pay for travel or a vacation.

The problem lies in the rapid increase in the number of people at the airport, the train station, and the freeway, all at the same time. It causes delays in what would otherwise be ‘normal’ traffic and flow, slowing everyone down and causing a less-than-cheerful scene in most major hubs around the country. The excess demand also pushes prices up, from gas for the car to a window seat on the plane. So if you’re planning to travel this coming holiday season, be prepared for these potential pitfalls on the biggest day.

Pro Tip : If you are planning for the 2024 winter holiday season, travel experts suggest looking at airline flights in early September to save some cash. If you aren’t able to book that far in advance, you may be able to score a good deal by waiting until right before your heavy travel day to purchase a flight ticket. You can also consider how to use your travel rewards credit card throughout the year to rack up valuable points before the holidays roll around.

2. The Day Before Thanksgiving (November 27th)

For 2023, AAA reports that more than 55 million people planned to travel 50 miles or more, with the majority traveling on Wednesday before the four-day holiday weekend. The figure was not the highest in recent history but came in at a close rebounding to pre-pandemic levels.

Around the Thanksgiving holiday, most people will hit the roads to visit family or friends. Airports will be less crowded during this time compared to other major travel seasons, but those who plan to fly also need to be aware of the delays that could take place.

Pro tip : Anyone who plans to travel for Thanksgiving should avoid Wednesday at all costs. Research suggests that the afternoon the day before the holiday can be the worst on the roads, leading to delays of up to four times as long as a normal day. Travel on Thanksgiving Day if possible. If you’re planning to fly, AAA recommends doing so the Monday before Thanksgiving if you want the least expensive options.

3. Day Before the 4 th of July (July 3rd)

In addition to the bustling holiday season, American travelers find an uncomfortable number of companions on the road and in the skies during big summer holidays. Third on the list is Independence Day, followed closely by Labor Day weekend. On July 4th, the airports and train stations are less congested than on other major US holidays, but the roads are packed to the brim.

For instance, the National Consumer Panel (NCP) reports that nearly 51 million people traveled on July 3rd and 4th in 2023. Short trips to see fireworks, visits to friends and family for a BBQ-fueled get-together or something else, and visiting national monuments or places of historical value all add up to a traffic-laden scene.

Pro Tip : Plan to travel the day of the Fourth of July holiday – not the day before – particularly if you are driving. For those who are flying, same-day routes are less congested and often less expensive, so plan accordingly.

4. Friday Before Memorial Day (May 26th)

Creeping up on July 4th travel statistics, Memorial Day weekend is another difficult time to be on the road. In 2023, an estimated 43 million travelers took off for a three-day weekend, starting early on the Friday before the holiday. Most people will drive their cars, trucks, or SUVs, making major highways a hectic place for those planning to get away this year.

Pro Tip : Travelers can avoid the mess and frustration of this frequently traveled day by waiting until Saturday of the holiday weekend to hit the road. Also, traveling by plane adds only small delays, compared to joining the roughly 37 million drivers. Avoid leaving town on Thursday or Friday afternoon if possible, and plan to return early the morning of Memorial Day to sidestep the chaos.

5. Friday Before Labor Day (August 30th)

Labor Day weekend in September each year closes out the list of the five worst travel days for Americans because it is seen as the last hoorah for families with children in school. Before the business of the school year kicks off for most, parents plan family vacations often ending on Labor Day weekend.

Traffic on the roads coming back from the countless beaches across the country combined with an increased number of groups of three or more flying home makes for a busy, typically delayed travel day. According to travel data company The Vacationer, 148 million people traveled on Labor Day weekend in 2023, making for countless traffic jams.

Pro tip : The worst day to travel during this specific holiday weekend is Friday afternoon. See if you can get out of dodge Thursday evening or before the sun rises Friday morning to help beat your fellow travelers to the punch. Plan for an early return on Monday to beat some of the traffic.

Other Busy Travel Holidays for the Year 2024

Other holidays throughout the year, including Easter (Sunday, March 31st, 2024) and New Year’s Eve (December 31st, 2024), also bring travel challenges and significant delays, particularly to those planning to drive to their destination. Avoiding traffic jams and the frustration that goes hand in hand with being stuck on a highway can be your best travel plan. Be sure to travel on the popular holiday itself, if possible, or go a few days in advance if you want to skip the madness.

Final Thoughts on Holiday Traveling Around the Busiest Days of the Year

Traveling is no longer an unreachable luxury for Americans, but thanks to more affordable ways to get from place to place, more individuals and families are taking advantage. You can avoid some of the headaches of the busiest travel days of the year by planning your next trip well in advance and shifting your dates to bypass the worst days.

Hi Larry, these are just some general guidelines that make sense in most areas. I can’t say for sure on I75 of Florida, which may also depend on which direction you are traveling. There will likely be many people that have to work Monday, but another large group will take the day off to make it a 4 or 5-day weekend. It will probably be best to travel between 9am and 3pm on the 3rd and after rush hour traffic that day. Traveling on Independence day is typically a safer bet than on the 3rd or the 5th.

July 4th 2023 is on a Tuesday. Are Monday, the 3rd, and Tuesday, the 4th, good driving days on I75 from Florida through Atlanta with Atlanta on the 4th?

Hey Joan, it can be a busy time, especially when New Year’s Eve or Day falls on the weekend. However, it is not as busy as many of the other times for long-distance travel and will also depend on which way the majority of the traffic is going.

I’m moving to North Carolina from New Jersey and planned on leaving January 1st…is this a bust time?

Hi Ted, thanks for your feedback. Are you saying you’re certain Thanksgiving holiday travel falls within the top 5 worst travel days, or are you implying it should be mentioned even if it were #6 as it is certainly one of the busiest travel times of the year? Especially when you include Black Friday.

When you don’t even mention Thanksgiving travel, you’ve lost all credibility and show you have no idea what you are talking about.

Zutobi 2024 Holiday Report: The Deadliest Holidays to be Driving

Zutobi

Holidays are meant to be moments of joy and celebration, but amidst the festivities, there are hidden dangers that we often overlook. Every year, as countless Americans hit the road to enjoy their well-deserved breaks, they unwittingly encounter risks that can turn these happy occasions into tragic events. Between 2017 and 2021, an alarming 11,001 lives were lost in car crashes during these seemingly blissful times. The road, it seems, holds more than meets the eye.

At Zutobi, we believe in the power of safe driving education and staying informed. In this report, we present the ranking of America’s most dangerous holidays on the road, based on meticulous analysis of statistics on DUI, speeding, distracted driving, and inexperience. We ranked each holiday from best to worst based on statistics from the past five years.

most dangerous travel day

First Place: Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving, a time of gratitude and gathering with loved ones, demands our utmost attention to safety on the road. Ranking first among the top five most dangerous holidays, Thanksgiving presents unique challenges that require heightened caution.

Over the past five years, 2,448 lives were lost during the Thanksgiving holiday. In 2021, there were 531 fatalities, showing a slight increase compared to the previous year’s 515. It reminds us of the importance of practicing responsible driving habits during this beloved holiday.

Specific incidents during Thanksgiving in 2021 revealed that 190 lives were lost due to driving under the influence (36%), while 161 lives were claimed by speeding (30%). Additionally, 79 fatalities involved young drivers.

To ensure safe travels during Thanksgiving, consider the following enhanced tips:

  • Prepare your vehicle before hitting the road by checking tire pressure, brakes, and fluid levels.
  • Minimize distractions by keeping your focus solely on the road and avoiding activities such as texting or eating while driving.
  • Get adequate rest before embarking on long drives to combat driver fatigue and ensure alertness behind the wheel.

Second Place: Labor Day

Labor Day, a time of reflection and bidding farewell to the summer season, carries its own set of risks on the road. As the second-ranking holiday among the top five most dangerous, Labor Day demands heightened attention and precaution.

Over the past five years, 2,348 lives were lost during Labor Day. In 2021, there was a slight decrease to 531 fatalities compared to the previous year’s 530. Although this reduction may seem marginal, it underscores the significance of prioritizing vigilance and safe driving practices during this transitional holiday.

Specific incidents during Labor Day in 2021 revealed that 216 lives were lost due to driving under the influence (40%), while 180 lives were claimed by speeding (34%). Additionally, 82 fatalities involved young drivers. These numbers emphasize the critical need for heightened awareness and responsible behavior behind the wheel during this holiday period.

To ensure safe journeys during Labor Day, consider the following enhanced tips:

  • Be mindful of changing weather conditions as summer transitions into fall. Check local forecasts and road conditions, and adjust your driving accordingly.
  • Share the road responsibly by showing courtesy to other drivers, motorcyclists, and bicyclists. Maintain a safe distance and use turn signals when changing lanes.
  • Observe and respect posted speed limits, especially in construction zones and areas with heavy traffic. Remember, arriving safely is more important than reaching your destination quickly.

Third Place: Fourth of July

The Fourth of July, a day of patriotic fervor and exuberant celebrations, is also marked by unique risks on the road. Ranking third among the top five most dangerous holidays, there are distinct factors that contribute to the risks associated with Fourth of July travel.

Over the past five years, 2,344 lives were lost during the Fourth of July. In 2021, the number of fatalities rose to 538, demonstrating an increase compared to the previous year’s 493, marking a rise of 9.1%. These numbers emphasize the importance of remaining vigilant and practicing responsible driving behaviors during this festive period.

Specific incidents during Fourth of July in 2021 revealed that 212 lives were lost due to driving under the influence (39%), while 171 lives were claimed by speeding (32%). Additionally, 69 fatalities involved young drivers. While these figures are concerning, we can take measures to enhance safety on the roads during this holiday.

To ensure responsible and safe travels during Fourth of July, consider the following tips:

  • Be aware of your surroundings and exercise caution when driving in areas with high pedestrian traffic due to parades, gatherings, and fireworks displays.
  • Take breaks during long journeys to combat fatigue and maintain focus behind the wheel, as drowsy driving poses significant risks.
  • Celebrate responsibly by refraining from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Designate a sober driver or use rideshare services instead.

Fourth Place: Memorial Day

Memorial Day marks the arrival of summer, igniting a spirit of adventure and a longing for outdoor excursions. However, amidst the anticipation, it’s crucial to acknowledge the potential dangers that accompany this holiday. Memorial Day ranks fourth among the top five most dangerous holidays.

Over the past five years, 2,192 lives were lost during Memorial Day. In 2021, the number of fatalities rose to 480, showing an increase compared to the previous year’s 406, signifying a 18.2% rise. These statistics remind us of the need for heightened caution and responsible behavior on the roads during this time.

Memorial Day incidents in 2021 revealed 181 lives lost due to driving under the influence (38%) and 145 lives claimed by speeding (30%). Additionally, 69 fatalities involved young drivers. While these numbers are concerning, it’s essential to remember that by adopting safe driving practices, we can minimize the risks associated with Memorial Day travel.

Several factors contribute to the increased risk on Memorial Day. The long weekend often leads to a surge in traffic volume as people embark on trips, resulting in congestion and potentially reckless driving behaviors. Moreover, the festive atmosphere and outdoor celebrations may encourage alcohol consumption, making DUI incidents more prevalent.

To ensure safe journeys during Memorial Day, consider the following tips:

  • Prioritize vehicle maintenance, including checking tire pressure, brakes, and fluid levels before hitting the road.
  • Remain attentive and avoid distractions while driving, such as texting or engaging in other activities that take your focus away from the road.
  • Plan your route in advance, taking into account potential traffic congestion and road closures.
  • Designate a sober driver or make use of alternative transportation if you plan to consume alcohol.

Fifth Place: Christmas

During the enchanting Christmas season, families gather to share in the warmth and joy of the festivities. While Christmas presents its own unique challenges on the road, it is considered the “safest” among the top five most dangerous holidays. Over the past five years, 1,669 lives were lost in fatal crashes during the Christmas holidays.

In 2021, there were 395 fatalities, showing an increase from the previous year’s 336, marking a significant rise of 17.6%. Among the specific incidents in 2021, 142 lives were lost due to driving under the influence (36%), 115 lives were claimed by speeding (29%), and 66 fatalities involved young drivers. While these numbers highlight areas of concern, Christmas still maintains a relatively lower risk compared to other holidays.

To ensure safe travels during Christmas, here are some essential tips to keep in mind:

  • Minimize distractions by avoiding phone use and other activities that divert your attention from the road.
  • Stay alert and watch for young and inexperienced drivers who may be more prone to making errors on the road.

How can this be improved?

Education plays a vital role in promoting safe driving habits and reducing the risks associated with these holidays. Proper driving education programs should be implemented, ensuring that new drivers receive comprehensive training on defensive driving techniques, responsible alcohol consumption, and the dangers of distracted driving. Additionally, ongoing safe driving campaigns can help raise awareness among the general public, emphasizing the importance of responsible behavior on the road.

As Leo Waldenback, co-founder of Zutobi, aptly states, “Proper driving education is the foundation of creating a safer driving environment for everyone. By equipping drivers with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the roads responsibly, we can work towards reducing the alarming statistics and making our holidays safer for all.”

In conclusion, while holidays bring excitement and joy, they also present inherent risks on the road. By prioritizing safe driving practices, spreading awareness through education, and fostering a culture of responsible behavior, we can strive towards making our holiday journeys safer and ensuring that families can cherish these special times without the specter of tragedy looming overhead.

Here Are the Safest — and Most Deadly — Days For Drunk-Driving Fatalities

Here Are The Safest—And Most Deadly—Days For Drunk-Driving Fatalities

Drunk driving remains a significant problem throughout the country. But certain days are more dangerous on the roads than others. MoneyGeek analyzed historical data from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to forecast 2023’s most dangerous days, weeks and holidays for driving under the influence (DUI) in the United States.

KEY FINDINGS:

  • MoneyGeek forecasts 13,490 DUI fatalities in 2023.
  • The historical trend of DUI fatalities that drives the forecast has increased dramatically. 2021’s DUI fatalities are 23% higher than 2016’s DUI fatalities and are at levels not seen since 2003.
  • Summer will account for 28% of drunk driving-related fatalities, making it the deadliest season.
  • Independence Day week is forecasted to be the most deadly in 2023, with 311 expected fatalities.
  • On New Year’s Day, drunk driving-related deaths spike 117% above the baseline average, making it the most dangerous holiday of the year for drunk driving.
  • 60% of drunk driving-related fatalities happen on the weekends (Friday through Sunday).

DUI Fatalities by Season

Drunk driving incidents never really take a hiatus, but certain seasons bring out more than the usual amount of intoxicated drivers. If you want to steer clear of people driving under the influence, the summer is the worst time to drive. According to MoneyGeek’s analysis, 28% of DUI-related deaths are projected to happen in the summer of 2023. Fall is close behind summer when it comes to the number of DUI fatalities per season, though, coming in with 27%. Spring has 24% of DUI incidents. Winter presents its own seasonal dangers on the road, but you’ll still need to avoid drunk drivers during this chilly time of year. At 21%, winter is the least likely season to be involved in a DUI-related fatal accident.

List showing that New Year’s Day is the most dangerous day for DUIs, followed by July 4 and Thanksgiving.

Most Dangerous Holidays for DUI

The next time someone warns you to be careful when driving home from your New Year’s Eve celebration, don’t roll your eyes. Heed their warning. New Year’s Day is the deadliest day of the year for drunk driving.

The odds that somebody will be drunk behind the wheel and cause a fatal accident on New Year’s Day is 117% higher relative to the seasonal trend and day of the week where it falls. Unlike other holidays, where the celebrations may occur over a period of days, New Year’s is one night, with drivers making their way back home in the wee hours of New Year’s Day. And many folks get that full day off, to boot.

Independence Day is in second place but far off in the distance compared to New Year’s Day. Your risk of encountering drunk drivers on the Fourth of July is 77% over the trend. Thanksgiving is the third most dangerous holiday, with a risk 55% higher than the trend.

Labor Day comes in fourth place (54%), and Memorial Day is the fifth most dangerous holiday for drunk driving, with a risk 51% higher than average. Since many people tend to stay put on Christmas Day, the risk of encountering a drunk driver goes down to a 9% higher risk than average.

Most Dangerous Days of the Week for DUI

Analysis of DUI fatalities that occurred between 2017 and 2021 shows that the most dangerous day of the week to drive in 2023 is Saturday, with Sundays being close behind. Tuesday is the day of the week when the least amount of drunk drivers tend to be on the road.

Of all the DUI-related accidents occurring in any given week, 23% are predicted to occur on Saturday and 22% on Sunday. One reason Sunday appears so deadly is that many DUI-related accidents happen after midnight.

Most Dangerous Weeks of the Year

The most dangerous week of 2023 will start on Monday, July 3. Due to July 4th, DUI accidents are expected to rise. People are taking off work, going on vacations, attending barbecues, visiting beaches and unwinding. The data shows that some of those people will get behind the wheel after drinking too much.

The second most dangerous week in 2023 for drunk driving begins on July 31st — when summer travel is in full swing — and you’ll want to be on high alert if you’re driving at night. The week following August 7 — is projected to be the third deadliest for DUIs and essentially just as deadly as the week of July 31st.

Ways to Stay Safe on the Road During the Holidays

Of course, there’s only so much you can do to protect yourself from a drunk driver. For instance, it isn’t practical to only drive on Tuesdays, but if you don’t need to be out late on a holiday, there may be something to be said for not going out. Still, there are some strategies you can employ to stay safe on the road.

Have a designated driver. If you’re drinking with friends, make sure whoever is behind the wheel hasn’t been drinking.

Have a return home plan. If everybody you are with will be drinking and there’s no designated driver, know ahead of time who you’ll be calling for a ride home, whether that’s a family member or an Uber driver. Make sure you’re strapped in. Good advice for anybody in a car, any time, of course, whether you encounter a drunk driver or not. But Heather Geronemus, the national chairwoman of Mothers Against Drink Driving (MADD), counsels, “The best defense against drunk drivers is to always wear your seatbelt and make sure children are properly restrained.” Drive without distractions. It doesn’t matter if you’re sober. If you’re driving — especially at night — stay off the phone and keep your eyes on the road. Distracted driving rivals drunk driving when it comes to dangerous behaviors on the road. Unfortunately, there often isn’t much you can do if a drunk driver careens toward your car, but being alert could make all the difference in surviving an encounter with a drunk driver.

Consequences of Getting a DUI

Heather Geronemus has become an expert on the consequences of drunk driving from the victim’s side. In 2009, her father, Dr. Robert Geronemus, a prominent kidney specialist in Fort Lauderdale, was leaving a medical conference dinner in downtown Miami as a pedestrian when he was struck by a car that went through a red light.

“First, it’s most important to think about what DUIs cost families,” she says. “For a victim like me, you cannot put a price on a lifetime of memories that you will never make with a loved one.” But there is definitely a monetary cost, Geronemus says. “From a financial perspective, it’s most important to understand what DUIs cost society. Estimates show that drunk driving costs our nation over $130 billion per year. Much of these costs are borne by taxpayers, not the drunk driver. This issue affects us all and it makes financial sense to try to eliminate drunk driving.” And what’s the real financial cost for somebody who gets pulled over for driving while intoxicated? It’s not pretty.

“The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates a first-time drunk driver can pay as much as $10,000 in fines, legal fees, and higher car insurance costs ,” Geronemus says.

A person reviewing his finances with a laptop and papers.

DUIs Leave a Lasting Financial Impact

What’s more, a DUI continues to impact your wallet long after the initial violation. A DUI can cause your insurance rates to increase significantly; the cheapest car insurance rates will immediately be out of your reach. You may also be required to file an SR-22, which you can’t do on your own. Your insurance company must file the SR-22 for you, and not all insurance companies offer that option.

So, whether or not an SR-22 is a requirement for you, it can be beneficial to shop around to confirm whether your insurance provider can still offer you the cheapest auto insurance rates after a DUI , or if another company might be able to save you at least a little bit of money.

With the above in mind, if you’re ever at a point where you’ve done some drinking but don’t feel drunk, and you’re tempted to save a little money and not call an Uber, you should rethink that decision. The short-term costs of a ride home could save you thousands in complications related to a DUI and save lives.

The interior of a car with hands on a steering wheel.

An End to Drunk Driving

Heather Geronemus says that someday, the number of drunk driving accidents is bound to go down. Not soon enough, of course.

“MADD believes that technology will ultimately solve the problem of drunk driving. We are working on Capitol Hill to support legislation such as the RIDE Act and HALT Act, which would direct the Department of Transportation to require new cars to have advanced technology to detect and stop drunk drivers.”

Geronemus adds: “The technology would be passive, so the driver wouldn’t know it’s in the car unless he or she were impaired.”

But until that happens, driving defensively and never drinking and driving can help keep you and other drivers on the road safe.

Methodology

MoneyGeek analyzed the five most recent years of DUI Crash Fatalities from the NHTSA FARS database from 2003 to 2021. A Bayesian time series forecasting model was utilized to project the 2023 DUI fatalities by day. The forecast model was fit using a multiplicative model (the components are multiplied together) using day of the week, day of the year, U.S. holidays and trend line components.

MoneyGeek studied NHTSA data on fatal motor vehicle crashes from 2003 to 2021 involving someone with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08g/dl or more.

New data has revealed that Thanksgiving is the deadliest US holiday for drivers

most dangerous travel day

INDIANA – A new study has revealed which US holidays are the most dangerous for drivers, based on reported road fatalities – and it turns out Thanksgiving is the deadliest.

most dangerous travel day

The research, compiled by Ohio personal injury lawyer John Fitch , analyzed National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data on fatal motor vehicle crashes reported on major US holidays to identify which are the most dangerous for drivers.

Drivers may think twice before taking to the road on Thanksgiving, as the holiday sees the highest increase in road fatalities compared to any other event in the US.

An average of 405 fatal crashes occur on the national holiday each year – which is almost three times the daily average for November (109).

most dangerous travel day

This is a substantially higher rise than seen across US holidays generally, as the typical increase is 140% between the day of the event and an average day in the same month.

While it’s unclear what the exact reason for this increase is, it could be that ‘Blackout Wednesday’ – otherwise known as Drinksgiving, plays a role in increasing the danger for drivers.

Even those who aren’t partaking in the alcohol-heavy event could still be affected by the after-effects of celebrating with their family, such as feeling tired, sluggish, or run down.

most dangerous travel day

With findings from the National Safety Council revealing that driving without sleep for a consecutive 20 hours is just as dangerous as driving with a blood concentration of 0.08% (the US legal limit), it makes sense that celebratory holiday days pose a higher risk on the road.

Following behind Thanksgiving as the second-deadliest holiday for drivers is Memorial Day, which sees on-the-day fatalities up by 259% compared to the rest of May. Third is the Fourth of July, with an increase of 227% – almost a fifth (18%) lower than Thanksgiving’s rise.

Fatalities reported on major holidays, compared to monthly averages

On the other end of the scale, the holidays that proved the least hazardous for drivers are Halloween and New Year’s Eve.

Drivers may want to travel on these days compared to any other time in October and December, as both see a decrease in fatal crashes on the day versus throughout the month.

In the run-up to the spookiest day of the year, the average daily fatalities are 116, while Halloween itself only sees 105 – a 9% drop perhaps caused by people walking while trick or treating.

New Year’s Eve brings an even more significant decrease of 16% down to 87, against December’s average daily figure of 103 – likely as everyone is busy attending parties.

This is in sharp contrast to New Year’s Day, which sees a rise in on-the-day fatalities, increasing by 19% to 108 from the 91 typical of a day in January, suggesting the aftermath of New Year’s Eve celebrations are more dangerous than celebrating the event itself.

“It’s a well-known fact people travel to spend time with their friends and family on holidays, so; naturally, there’s going to be more traffic on the roads in the run-up to a major event like Christmas or Halloween,” said a spokesperson at John Fitch. “With increased traffic comes increased risk – particularly for celebrations that can run quite late, like on New Year’s Day, as people are likely to be tired from the night before and therefore may struggle to concentrate as well as they normally do.

If you plan to travel, you must be conscious of your condition and consider your safety. Ask yourself, are you okay driving? Have you slept enough? Will the alcohol be out of your system? Only when the answer is yes to all those questions is it safe to drive.

Most Dangerous Days and Times to Drive

Published on April 22, 2022

You may pride yourself on being the safest driver in the world — and perhaps you really are — but there’s very little you can do to control other drivers’ behavior. That’s why in addition to being careful, considerate, and following the rules of the road, you need to always drive defensively. Among other things, this means anticipating other drivers’ moves and assuming that someone at some point will do something reckless or potentially deadly.

Another way to stay safe on the road is to avoid the road on certain days and times. While this technique is not always possible, if you can stay home until driving conditions calm down a bit, you’ll avoid a ton of frustration and a heap of trouble that’s just waiting to happen.

Below, you’ll discover the most dangerous times to get behind the wheel and get tips on how to enhance you and your passengers’ safety. Below are the days, times, and holidays that statistics show to be the deadliest for drivers.

Time of day

The evening commute comes as no surprise to be a time when increased accidents happen. Rush hour — weeknights between 3 pm to 6 pm is the most dangerous time on the road. Even with many still working remotely post-pandemic, this period still sees more drivers, more congestion, more frayed tempers, and, as a result, more collisions. One caveat: the most dangerous time of the day for fatal accidents is Saturday night between 9 pm and midnight, based on data from the NHTSA. This makes sense when you consider that this is when more DUI arrests are likely to happen as alcohol consumption plays a major part in these traffic fatalities.

Below is a breakdown of how many crashes occur on each day of the week and how many fatalities occur annually:

most dangerous travel day

Source: NHTSA, Traffic Safety Facts 2019: A Compilation of Motor Vehicle Crash Data

That would be…Friday based on data from the NHTSA. The agency reports that there were 1,152,000 total crashes reported on this day in 2019. You’ve got the same high volume of drivers on the road anxious to get home from work. (Some may even have joined their colleagues for a quick happy hour drink before getting behind the wheel.) In addition to tired commuters, you also have more cars on the road as people head out to start their weekend away.

According to the report , October proves to be the worst month for auto accidents. Several factors contribute to the tenth month being the deadliest. The change from cold to warm brings people outside to enjoy the great outdoors. In particular, summer and fall are great times to take advantage of outdoor activities. May through October are the months with the most vehicle miles traveled . The unfortunate aspect of having so many cars on the road during the warmer months is a correlation to road fatalities. The more cars on the road, the more fatalities.

Travel tip - In 2021 the month with the lowest travel on urban highways was January.

most dangerous travel day

Independence Day: Our nation’s birthday wins the prize for the deadliest driving day, with alcohol and congested roads being the key factors. From 2011 to 2021, an average of 2,743 deaths occurred every year on July 4. Coming in a close second is July 3 since many Americans take to the highways to visit family and friends and celebrate the holiday.

Labor Day Weekend: Many of the accident fatalities in September happen over the long holiday weekend for the same reasons as July 4.

Thanksgiving: This is one of the busiest travel times of the year in the US. The Wednesday preceding turkey day sees the highest volume of traffic as many Americans head home for the holiday.

Christmas: Inclement weather, stressed-out shoppers, seething parking lots , and aggressive drivers all contribute to making “the most wonderful time of the year” also one of the most dangerous times to be on the roads.

New Year’s Day: The day after New Year’s Eve ranks in the top five deadliest driving days of the entire year. According to the NHTSA, (and no big surprise) the first day of the year has the highest number of alcohol-related traffic deaths.

Avoid the Danger

While the information above may have you planning on never taking your car out of the garage again, rest assured you don’t have to give up driving. There are tips and tricks to help you avoid the busiest times on the road. Use apps such as Waze or Google Maps to figure out the optimal time to set out. Ask your boss if you can work from home or follow a flextime schedule or consider sharing your ride so you can take advantage of the carpool lane.

And if you absolutely have to get out there when the going’s tough, remembering a few simple pointers will help keep you and your passengers safe.

  • Don’t start the car until everyone has buckled up.
  • Remove the temptations (smartphones) that cause distracted driving
  • Make sure your headlights and brake lights are working
  • Obey speed limits and signs
  • During the holidays, alcohol is more prevalent, so if you are planning to drink, designate a driver and never get behind the wheel after drinking.
  • Pull over if you’re tired on a long drive

The Most Dangerous Travel Days in 2021

Travel days around thanksgiving are expected to be the deadliest.

No one likes to think about the holidays as a deadly time of year, but it’s true. As car accident attorneys, we are well aware of the horrible facts around the holidays because we are the ones who get the calls from our friends, telling us that someone has been hurt or has died in a car crash. How are you getting to your destination this holiday season? If you plan to drive to see your loved ones, please keep in mind that it is dangerous and take precautions. We expect an 11% increase in accidents and fatalities around the holidays based on the past spikes. Traveling during Thanksgiving is much more dangerous than other holidays. Georgia saw a huge spike last year , despite the pandemic and social distancing recommendations. The state had an 18% increase in traffic fatalities on November 24th compared to the same date in 2017!

There are best and worst days to travel during the Thanksgiving week

If you or a loved one is injured in an auto accident at any time, please call us right away. However, our hope is to provide you with tips so that you do not have to call us for help. If you plan to drive this thanksgiving holiday one of the first things you can do to reduce your chances of a crash is to be selective about your travel days. Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday, and most schools, non-retail, and non-food service businesses close both for the holiday and on Friday after. Therefore Wednesday afternoon has the highest amount of travel traffic and is probably the worst day to be on the road. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Saturday and Sunday after are the worst days to be on the road. Monday before Thanksgiving and the Monday after the Thanksgiving week are much safer Travel Days.

CDC recommendations to social distancing are not a likely deterrent for holiday traffic

If 2020 is any indication of what CDC recommendations to socially distance do for holiday traffic safety, we can expect 2021 holiday roads to be heavy. Despite the fact that 2020 has the Atlanta community on lockdown, Fox 5 Atlanta reported that 2020 was the deadliest year for Georgia roads. As of December, the state reported 1,600 deaths on the roadways. Compare that to 1,491 in 2019 and 994 in 2018, according to The Georgia Department of Transportation. Traffic violations like speeding, texting, and driving, failing to buckle up are some of the most common avoidable causes of accidents that led to injuries and fatalities last year.

Avoid becoming a statistic by following these simple steps.

In addition to being selective about travel days, you can improve your chances of arriving safely to and from your holiday destination by taking simple precautions. You should observe safety rules like wearing a seat belt and being mindful of speeding signs . Getting enough rest before a long drive can also make a huge difference on the road. Survey data from the CDC reports that one in 25 adults has reported falling asleep behind the wheel. We understand that the holidays are stressful, and it can be tempting to push yourself to drive, even when you are stressed, rushed, and tired, but as your friends, we strongly advise you to reconsider. The same goes for drinking and driving. Just don’t do it.

We care about you and want you to have an enjoyable season

Traveling to see family and friends this holiday season is a tradition that brings us joy. We want to encourage you to hope you have a safe, happy Thanksgiving, wherever and however you decide to spend it!

And remember, if you or your loved one is injured in a car accident in Atlanta and is not licensed, do not panic or stress. Call your friends at Rohan Law!

Is New Year's Day the Most Dangerous Day to Drive?

traffic jam

Go out on New Year's Eve (which probably means you'll be coming home on New Year's Day) and you'll probably be implored by friends and family to be careful. Take a cab. Lots of drunk drivers out, obviously. It makes sense that the New Year's holiday would be a busy one for law enforcement and emergency response teams. And it is. But, believe it or not, New Year's Day is not the most treacherous day of the year to be behind the wheel.

Before we go any further, let's just clarify this: None of what we are about to say means that it's a good idea to be reckless on New Year's Eve. It's a safe bet that several of the drivers on the road should not be in a car. Just because there are statistically more car crashes on other days doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful.

Now, then. According to AutoInsurance.org , which used data from various government sources, the worst holiday for auto accidents in 2022 was Memorial Day, perhaps because it was the first holiday of summer and drivers could be drunk or just frustrated with traffic, heat and summer road construction delays. There were 448 fatal accidents on Memorial Day. The next worst holidays (in order) were Labor Day, Independence Day, Columbus Day, Father's Day and Cinco de Mayo.

So where does New Year's Day lie? AutoInsurance.org put it at No. 6 on their list of safest holidays for auto accidents, followed by New Year's Eve at No. 5. The safest holiday of all? Why, Christmas. "The main reason holidays like New Year’s, Christmas, and St. Patrick’s Day are safer is due to stringent efforts by law enforcement. Many drivers who would typically drive under the influence choose not to because they know they are more likely to get caught," the website reported .

It's no coincidence that most of the deadliest holidays are in the summer and the safest ones tend to be in the winter. Because driving conditions are worse in the winter, people tend to use more caution on the roads, says AutoInsurance.org.

Memorial Day Weekend among Most Dangerous Holidays for Travel

Posted on: May 24, 2013

Auto accident attorneys  at Pintas & Mullins Law Firm remind the driving public that holidays are the most dangerous times of the year for travel. In fact, Memorial Day consistently ranks among the top five most dangerous days of the year to be on the road.

Although most drivers assume the majority of accidents happen during the winter months, the reality is that the warmer spring months are much more prone to accidents. One news station reported that, in 2012, about 26% of all auto accidents occurred in March through May, and another quarter between September and November. To compare, the winter months accounted for about 23%.

Although these percentages seem relatively minor, it may be helpful to remember while out on the road this spring. Drivers, particularly in the Northern states, understandably drive more defensively in the winter months, when unpredictable weather and poor road conditions seem more threatening. In case you’ve been out of the country, spring in the United States can be just as unpredictable, with unexpected rain and thunderstorms, wind gusts, and sudden shifts in temperature.

Weekend holidays such as the upcoming Memorial Day also bring a significant surge in roadway crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Memorial Day consistently ranks in the top five most dangerous day for travel every single year (the others are New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, July 4th, and Labor Day).

In 2009, the NHTSA recorded that 473 people died on American roadways during the three-day weekend, and about 42% of those fatalities involved alcohol. It is worth noting that seat belts reduce fatalities by an estimated 45%. Based on this estimation, about 212 people’s lives would be saved this Memorial Day weekend if they used their seatbelts.

Due to this known increase in roadway dangers, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) recently announced that roadwork will be suspended wherever possible over this holiday weekend. In related news , a recent auto incident in Damascus, Virginia injured 60 people and sent nine others to the hospital. During a local parade, a car plowed into both spectators and participants, sending hundreds of people running and screaming.

The incident occurred during the beginning of the Hikers Parade at the annual Appalachian Trail Days Festival in Damascus. Fortunately, none of the 60 injuries appeared to be life-threatening. William H. Nunley, the Damascus police chief, stated that the driver lost control of the vehicle from effects of a medical condition, though the specific ailment was not specified. One news station reported that the driver may have been elderly.

The car was participating in the parade, and was traveling at about 20 to 25 miles per hour when it started drifting into the crowd that afternoon. Nunley estimated that the car drove into about 1,000 people while drifting out of control. Spectators immediately started running, shouting, and yelling for others to get out of the way. Law enforcement and emergency rescue personnel were already on scene and were able to immediately aid the injured.

Along with the nine more seriously injured, the driver was also taken to a nearby trauma center. The director of emergency management told reporters that the accident was indeed caused by a medical emergency, and was not deliberate in any way. Those injured sustained a wide range of injuries, from bruises to broken bones. Nearly all injured were participants in the parade, and came to celebrate the festival from outside the Southwest Virginia Auto accident attorneys  at Pintas & Mullins Law Firm remind the public to use caution while driving this weekend even if you are not celebrating. Ranked: most dangerous countries in the world 2024

The most dangerous countries in the world to visit in 2024 have been updated in the latest Travel Risk Map

The most dangerous countries to visit in 2024 are Afghanistan, the Central African Republic , Iraq, Libya, Mali , Somalia, South Sudan, Syria , Ukraine and Yemen according to the latest Travel Risk Map , an interactive tool produced by security specialists at  International SOS .

The map is used to predict the safest and, conversely, the least safe countries in the world to visit and has four layers in total covering a country’s security risk, medical risk, and the impact of the pandemic on travel and domestic operations.

For the security layer of the map, countries are indexed according to their travel security risk rating, which uses five risk definitions : insignificant, low, medium, high and extreme.

International SOS uses several criteria to assess how the conditions in the country may impact visitors’ safety and security.

map of the most dangerous countries 2024

These include the threat posed to travellers by political violence (including terrorism, insurgency, politically motivated unrest and war), social unrest (including sectarian, communal and ethnic violence) and violent and petty crime.

Other factors assessed include transport infrastructure, the capability of security and emergency services, and the threat of natural disasters. It’s also possible to use the map to assess medical risk and road safety standards around the world.

MOST DANGEROUS COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD

These are the nine most dangerous countries in the world according to International SOS. They have been assessed as carrying an ‘extreme travel security risk’.

  • Afghanistan
  • Central African Republic
  • South Sudan

The most dangerous countries in the world include Ukraine, where Russia launched an invasion in February 2022; Afghanistan, which saw the Taliban take over in August 2021 as foreign forces pulled out of the country; Syria, which has been embroiled in civil war since 2011; and Yemen, which has also been mired in a years-long civil war leading to the deaths of thousands and a major humanitarian crisis .

Despite ongoing instability in Mali – which saw the UNESCO-listed historic city of Timbuktu taken under siege by jihadists in September 2023 – the West African nation has been reassessed as ‘high security risk’ as opposed to ‘extreme’.

“Government control and law and order may be minimal or non-existent across large areas. Serious threat of violent attacks by armed groups targeting travellers and international assignees. Government and transport services are barely functional. Large parts of the country are inaccessible to foreigners.” International SOS

In October 2023, Israel launched an invasion of the Gaza Strip in Palestine after a surprise Hamas attack on southern Israel led to the death of 1,200 people and 240 hostages. As of 16 February 2024, the retaliatory campaign has killed over 28,000 Palestinians. To date, International SOS has not updated the map to reflect this.

SAFEST COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD

  • Liechtenstein
  • Marshall Islands
  • Switzerland

“Rates of violent crime are very low. There is no significant political violence or civil unrest and little sectarian, communal, racial or targeted violence against foreigners. Security and emergency services are effective and infrastructure is sound. Transport services are of a high standard with good safety records and only occasional travel disruption. Industrial action affecting essential services is rare.” International SOS

Thanksgiving travel: Most dangerous days to drive

'there is a global epidemic happening of distracted driving'.

If you’re driving to visit family for Thanksgiving , there are certain days during the week that you’ll want to be especially cautious on the road, according to a report.

Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT) published a report earlier this month that found which days are the most dangerous to be on the road during the week of Thanksgiving.

The report also found which cities were the most congested, which had the most distracted drivers and which had the highest numbers of drivers who were speeding on those days.

“There is a global epidemic happening of distracted driving,” Bill Powers, co-founder and CEO of CMT, told FOX Business. “It is for no other reason than human beings have more instant information at their fingertips through smartphones, intelligent transportation vehicles, dashboards that are like mini-computers, where you’re pressing buttons while you’re driving, even to look at the stereo. Things are different than they were … 20 years ago.”

Of course, around the holidays, there are other added distractions that compound the problem, Powers said, including congestion and potentially stressful family relationships.

According to CMT, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving is the most congested day during the week.

The five most congested cities on that day are Dallas, Texas, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Baltimore and Houston in order.

Dallas, Texas, is the most congested city on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, according to CMT.

However, the most dangerous day of that week to drive is Thanksgiving Day itself, the report found.

On Thanksgiving Day, there are more drivers that are speeding and more distracted drivers on the road.

Boston has the most speeding drivers on Thanksgiving day, according to CMT.

The cities that have the most speeding drivers on Thanksgiving Day are Boston, Washington, D.C., Las Vegas, Baltimore and Atlanta.

The cities with the most distracted drivers on Thanksgiving Day are Memphis; New Orleans; Nashville, Tennessee; Arlington, Texas; and Kansas City, Missouri.

Memphis, Tennessee, has the most distracted drivers on Thanksgiving day, CMT found.

To avoid the congestion and dangerous driving, CMT recommends leaving on Tuesday, when the roads aren’t quite as busy and drivers aren’t speeding as much.

UBER DISCRIMINATED AGAINST BLIND WOMAN WITH DOG, PANEL RULES

Overall, the best way to be safe in the car is to be aware that distracted driving is a real problem, according to Powers.

“The best practice is, eliminate distractions before you get behind the wheel,” Powers said. “You need to stay alert because you’re not on the road by yourself. There’s congestion everywhere. And when you see somebody who might be inebriated or distracted or speeding, just let them go … Don’t try to compete with that person.”

CMT gathered data for its report from its phone sensors and optional Bluetooth Tag devices that are part of the company’s DriveWell platform.

The platform can pick up information on speeding, acceleration, hard braking, cornering and distractions from smartphones, the report said.

The data for the report was collected during the week of Thanksgiving last year, from Monday, Nov. 19 through Monday, Nov. 26. Overall, CMT analyzed 5,791,145 drivers during that week.

Aside from gathering data, CMT’s DriveWell programs help people improve their driving through various programs, many of which are gamification-based, Powers said.

“What we’ve done is take the technology that’s available to humans today that is causing … distraction and trying to make drivers better by giving them feedback, by giving them a driving score.”

“Most people just want to know they’re doing the right thing,” he added.

14. 99-Bend Road to Heaven (China)

Spanning over 11 km in China’s Tianmen Mountain National Park, the 99-Bend features a staggering 99 hairpin bends and sheer drops of about 1,175 meters. This isn’t a surprise since China also built the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, one of the scariest and most famous bridges in the world.

The 99-Bend’s twists, turns, and sheer cliffs with nothing to prevent cars from falling over the edge are some things that make this road dangerous. An even greater concern is the likelihood of earthquakes in this part of the world.

What we know about unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S.

The unauthorized immigrant population in the United States reached 10.5 million in 2021, according to new Pew Research Center estimates. That was a modest increase over 2019 but nearly identical to 2017.

A line chart showing that the number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. remained mostly stable from 2017 to 2021.

The number of unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. in 2021 remained below its peak of 12.2 million in 2007. It was about the same size as in 2004 and lower than every year from 2005 to 2015.

The new estimates do not reflect changes that have occurred since apprehensions and expulsions of migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border started increasing in March 2021 . Migrant encounters at the border have since reached historic highs .

Pew Research Center undertook this research to understand ongoing changes in the size and characteristics of the unauthorized immigrant population in the United States. The Center has published estimates of the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population for more than two decades. The estimates presented in this research are the Center’s latest, adding new and updated annual estimates for 2017 through 2021.

Center estimates of the unauthorized immigrant population use a “residual method.” It is similar to methods used by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Immigration Statistics and nongovernmental organizations, including the Center for Migration Studies and the Migration Policy Institute . Those organizations’ estimates are generally consistent with ours. Our estimates also align with official U.S. data sources, including birth records, school enrollment figures and tax data, as well as Mexican censuses and surveys.

Our “residual” method for estimating the nation’s unauthorized immigrant population includes these steps:

  • Estimate the total number of immigrants living in the country in a particular year using data from U.S. censuses and government surveys such as the American Community Survey and the Current Population Survey.
  • Estimate the number of immigrants living in the U.S. legally using official counts of immigrant and refugee admissions together with other demographic data (for example, death and out-migration rates).
  • Subtract our estimate of lawful immigrants from our estimate of the total immigrant population . This provides an initial estimate of the unauthorized immigrant population .

Our final estimate of the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population, as well as estimates for lawful immigrants, includes an upward adjustment. We do this because censuses and surveys tend to miss some people . Undercounts for immigrants, especially unauthorized immigrants, tend to be higher than for other groups. (Our 1990 estimate comes from work by Robert Warren and John Robert Warren; details can be found here .)

The term “unauthorized immigrant” reflects standard and customary usage by many academic researchers and policy analysts. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Immigration Statistics also generally uses it. The term means the same thing as undocumented immigrants, illegal immigrants and illegal aliens.

For more details on how we produced our estimates, read the Methodology section of our November 2018 report on unauthorized immigrants.

The unauthorized immigrant population includes any immigrants not in the following groups:

  • Immigrants admitted for lawful residence (i.e., green card admissions)
  • People admitted formally as refugees
  • People granted asylum
  • Former unauthorized immigrants granted legal residence under the 1985 Immigration Reform and Control Act
  • Immigrants admitted under any of categories 1-4 who have become naturalized U.S. citizens
  • Individuals admitted as lawful temporary residents under specific visa categories

Read the Methodology section of our November 2018 report on unauthorized immigrants for more details.

Pew Research Center’s estimate of unauthorized immigrants includes more than 2 million immigrants who have temporary permission to be in the United States. (Some also have permission to work in the country.) These immigrants account for about 20% of our national estimate of 10.5 million unauthorized immigrants for 2021.

Although these immigrants have permission to be in the country, they could be subject to deportation if government policy changes. Other organizations and the federal government also include these immigrants in their estimates of the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population.

Immigrants can receive temporary permission to be in the U.S. through the following ways:

Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

In 2021, there were about 500,000 unauthorized immigrants with Temporary Protected Status . This status provides protection from removal or deportation to individuals who cannot safely return to their country because of civil unrest, violence or natural disaster.

Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) is a similar program that grants protection from removal. The number of immigrants with DED is much smaller than the number with TPS.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals is a program that offers protection from deportation to individuals who were brought to the U.S. as children before June 15, 2007. As of the end of 2021, there were slightly more than 600,000 DACA beneficiaries , largely immigrants from Mexico.

Asylum applicants

Individuals who have applied for asylum but are awaiting a ruling are not legal residents yet but cannot be deported. There are two types of asylum claims, defensive and affirmative .

Defensive asylum applications are generally filed by individuals facing deportation or removal from the U.S. These are processed by the Department of Justice’s Executive Office for Immigration Review. At the end of 2021, there were almost 600,000 applications pending.

Affirmative asylum claims are made by individuals already in the U.S. who are not in the process of being deported or removed. These claims are handled by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). At the end of 2021, more than 400,000 applications for affirmative asylum were pending, some covering more than one applicant.

Here are key findings about how the U.S. unauthorized immigrant population changed from 2017 to 2021:

  • The most common country of birth for unauthorized immigrants is Mexico. However, the population of unauthorized immigrants from Mexico dropped by 900,000 from 2017 to 2021 , to 4.1 million.
  • There were increases in unauthorized immigrants from nearly every other region of the world – Central America, the Caribbean, South America, Asia, Europe and sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Among U.S. states, only Florida and Washington saw increases to their unauthorized immigrant populations , while California and Nevada saw decreases. In all other states, unauthorized immigrant populations were unchanged.
  • 4.6% of U.S. workers in 2021 were unauthorized immigrants , virtually identical to the share in 2017.

Trends in the U.S. immigrant population

A pie chart showing that unauthorized immigrants were 22% of the U.S. foreign-born population in 2021.

The U.S. foreign-born population was 14.1% of the nation’s population in 2021. That was very slightly higher than in the last five years but below the record high of 14.8% in 1890.

As of 2021, the nation’s 10.5 million unauthorized immigrants represented about 3% of the total U.S. population and 22% of the foreign-born population. These shares were among the lowest since the 1990s.

Between 2007 and 2021, the unauthorized immigrant population decreased by 1.75 million, or 14%.

Meanwhile, the lawful immigrant population grew by more than 8 million, a 29% increase, and the number of naturalized U.S. citizens grew by 49%. In 2021, naturalized citizens accounted for about half (49%) of all immigrants in the country.

Where unauthorized immigrants come from

Unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S. come from many parts of the world, with Mexico being the most common origin country.

A line chart showing that Mexicans are no longer a majority of unauthorized immigrants living in the U.S.

The origin countries for unauthorized immigrants have changed since the population peaked in 2007, before the Great Recession slowed immigration. Here are some highlights of those changes:

The number of unauthorized immigrants from Mexico living in the U.S. (4.1 million in 2021) was the lowest since the 1990s. Mexico accounted for 39% of the nation’s unauthorized immigrants in 2021, by far the smallest share on record .

The decrease in unauthorized immigrants from Mexico reflects several factors:

  • A broader decline in migration from Mexico to the U.S.
  • Mexican immigrants to the U.S. continuing to return to Mexico
  • Expanded opportunities for lawful immigration from Mexico and other countries, especially for temporary agricultural workers.

The rest of the world

The total number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. from countries other than Mexico has grown rapidly. In 2021, this population was 6.4 million, up by 900,000 from 2017.

A bar chart showing that the U.S. unauthorized immigrant populations from most world regions grew from 2017 to 2021.

Almost every region in the world had a notable increase in the number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. from 2007 to 2021. The largest increases were from Central America (240,000) and South and East Asia (180,000).

After Mexico, the countries of origin with the largest unauthorized immigrant populations in the U.S. in 2021 were:

  • El Salvador (800,000)
  • India (725,000)
  • Guatemala (700,000)
  • Honduras (525,000)

India, Guatemala and Honduras all saw increases from 2017.

The Northern Triangle

Three Central American countries – El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala – together represented 2.0 million unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. in 2021, or almost 20% of the total. The unauthorized immigrant population from the Northern Triangle grew by about 250,000 from 2017 and about 700,000 from 2007.

Other origin countries

Venezuela was the country of birth for 190,000 U.S. unauthorized immigrants in 2021. This population saw particularly fast growth, from 130,000 in 2017 and 55,000 in 2007.

Among countries with the largest numbers of U.S. unauthorized immigrants, India, Brazil, Canada and former Soviet Union countries all experienced growth from 2017 to 2021.

Some origin countries with significant unauthorized immigrant populations showed no change, notably China (375,000) and the Dominican Republic (230,000).

U.S. states of residence of unauthorized immigrants

The unauthorized immigrant population in most U.S. states stayed steady from 2017 to 2021. However, four states saw significant changes:

  • Florida (+80,000)
  • Washington (+60,000)
  • California (-150,000)
  • Nevada (-25,000)

States with the most unauthorized immigrants

U.S. state map showing color-coded range of unauthorized immigrant population by state. Six states had 400,000 or more unauthorized immigrants in 2021: California, Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey and Illinois.

The six states with the largest unauthorized immigrant populations in 2021 were:

  • California (1.9 million)
  • Texas (1.6 million)
  • Florida (900,000)
  • New York (600,000)
  • New Jersey (450,000)
  • Illinois (400,000)

These states have consistently had the most unauthorized immigrants since 1990 and earlier .

At the same time, the unauthorized immigrant population has become less geographically concentrated. In 2021, these six states were home to 56% of the nation’s unauthorized immigrants, down from 80% in 1990.

Detailed table: Unauthorized immigrant population for states (and margins of error), 1990-2021 (Excel)

Unauthorized immigrants in the labor force

A line chart showing that the number of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. workforce has remained mostly steady since 2017.

The share of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. workforce was slightly less than 5% in 2021, compared with 3% of the total U.S. population.

Demographics help explain the difference: The unauthorized immigrant population includes relatively few children or elderly adults, groups that tend not to be in the labor force.

Overall, about 7.8 million unauthorized immigrants were in the U.S. labor force in 2021. That was up slightly from 2019 but smaller than every year from 2007 through 2015.

Detailed table: Unauthorized immigrants in the labor force for states, 2021 (Excel)

Here are some additional findings about unauthorized immigrants as a share of the workforce nationwide and in certain states:

  • Since 2003, unauthorized immigrants have made up 4.4% to 5.4% of all U.S. workers, a relatively narrow range.
  • Fewer than 1% of workers in Maine, Montana, Vermont and West Virginia in 2021 were unauthorized immigrants.
  • Nevada (9%) and Texas (8%) had the highest shares of unauthorized immigrants in the workforce.
