“There are plenty of reasons to go to Mozambique. With its endlessly long, unspoiled Indian Ocean coastline, Mozambique is the ultimate beach destination. The picture-perfect setting of turquoise waters lapping on white sandy beaches fringed by swaying palm trees is like a dream come true. The marine life is phenomenal. You’ll have the opportunity to dive or snorkel with shoals of colorful fish zigzagging around the beautiful coral reefs. Or you can take a boat trip further offshore to get close to dolphins and whales. Real adventure enthusiasts might want to swim with whale sharks. Meeting the local Mozambicans is easy; these laid-back people love to welcome visitors to their piece of paradise. Go back in time with them on a traditional dhow cruise, check out the art deco Portuguese-influenced architecture, or dance the night away in one of Maputo’s edgy nightclubs. Whatever rocks your boat, don’t walk away without tasting the many tantalizing Mozambican dishes, especially the famous LM prawns.”

Where should I go in Mozambique?

“There is no shortage of stunning beaches in Mozambique. The most popular resort towns are in the south of the country. Ponta do Ouro, located at the southernmost extremity of Mozambique, is usually visited from South Africa and is a great place for diving and fishing. Nearby Maputo Special Reserve is a sanctuary for an estimated 450 to 500 coastal elephants. Nature-lovers will enjoy the bush-and-beach combo in a pristine protected environment. Other resort towns further north include Xai-Xai, Bilene, Tofo and Vilankulo. The latter is perhaps the biggest tourist hub in Mozambique. You’ll find lots of activities available here, including boat trips to the nearby Bazaruto Archipelago where you’ll enjoy some of the best snorkeling and diving reefs in the country. While you can visit these reefs from mainland Mozambique, staying on one of the archipelago’s islands is a more exclusive option. With several luxury lodges to choose from, the islands are ideal for a romantic getaway. More remote and less developed is the string of islands in the north, known as Quirimbas Archipelago. As is the case further south, the main attractions are the beaches and the marine wildlife, such as whales, dolphins, turtles, dugongs and a magnificent coral reef with associated fish. Aside from these natural wonders, you’ll get a taste of the country’s turbulent history with historical landmarks, such as the old Portuguese fort on Ibo Island.”

Can I extend my African safari with a trip to Mozambique?

“Although Mozambique has plenty to offer for a stand-alone holiday, it is also the perfect companion to a safari in East or southern Africa. It is very easy to add some days in Mozambique to a South Africa safari, for example. Connections are usually good from Kenya and Tanzania, though you might need an extra flight hop. There are few beaches in East and southern Africa that can really compete with the islands of Mozambique as idyllic destinations. The water is always warm, the reefs protect the shore from big waves, the marine life is incredibly varied and the islands are totally unspoiled. It is no surprise that you’ll find some of the most exquisite lodges here. They cater to families, newlyweds, adventure enthusiasts and people wanting to just get away from it all for a couple of days.”

Which parks should I visit on a Mozambique safari?

“While Mozambique is mostly rated as a beach destination, it has some parks and reserves worth visiting too. None of these parks competes with the top safari destinations in the likes of Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa. However, if you’re looking for a bit of an off-the-beaten-track adventure, they have a lot to offer. Gorongosa National Park, located at the southern end of the Rift Valley, incorporates a great variety of landscapes and habitats, including lakes, savannahs, woodland, mountains and rainforest. You’re likely to see elephants and plenty of antelope species here, and lions are making a strong comeback too. Limpopo, Banhine and Zinave National Parks all form part of Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a vast cross-border conservation initiative that also incorporates Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe and South Africa’s world-famous Kruger National Park. Limpopo NP is the most regularly visited of Mozambique’s inland parks, but most of this traffic is merely in transit between Kruger and the Mozambican coast. And while Limpopo is home to all of the Big Five, wildlife densities are very low, partly due to a lack of permanent water. The recently rehabilitated Zinave NP, by contrast, is an off-the-beaten gem where you stand a good chance of spotting elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo and white rhino, along with a wide variety of antelope. Predators that prowl Zinave include lion and leopard but densities are low and sightings very rare. Set along the far south coast of Mozambique, Maputo National Park is home to elephant, zebra, hippo and several species of antelope. This scenic park now incorporates several oceanfront lodges that offer a truly special bush-and-beach experience.”

What is the best time of the year for a holiday in Mozambique and/or a Mozambique safari?

“The tropical climate of Mozambique makes it suitable as a beach destination throughout the year. However, the months of December to March can be very wet and torrential rains are not uncommon over this period. Underwater visibility for snorkeling and diving is best from April to June and from September to November, when the sea tends to be calm. The dry months from July to October are best for wildlife viewing. At this time animals congregate around lakes and rivers and the thinning bush makes spotting easier.”

How much will this tour cost?

“There are several variables determining the price of a Mozambique tour. However, as a guideline, you can expect a tour package to cost around US$300 to US$500 per person per day. The level of accommodation is the biggest factor. Most beach resorts fall in the mid-range to luxury span, but there are a few budget options as well. If you’re looking for a tour visiting several places in the country, you might need some internal flights, which will add to the price. When available, a group tour might be more cost-effective than a private tour. Taking all these variables into account makes for a wide range of prices.”

Wildlife & Wilderness: Gorongosa Safari

Known in Mozambique as the ‘Park for Peace’, Gorongosa is one of Africa’s last true wild places with the greatest wildlife restoration story. When the war ended in 1992, the landscape was devastated and more than 90% of Gorongosa’s large mammals had disappeared. Efforts were made to rehabilitate Gorongosa after the war but it wasn’t until 2004, when American philanthropist Greg Carr partnered with the Mozambican government to restore the park, that it started coming back to life. The Gorongosa Restoration Project has worked with the Government of Mozambique for the past 20 years to restore wildlife to the Gorongosa National Park, in what is perhaps the greatest restoration success in Africa.

The mainland coast from Maputo south is a more lively coastline than many of the islands sheltered within the archipelagos as you head north. The coastline appeals to surfers and those travelling up by car from South Africa. As Mozambique is primarily a beach destination, the weather ultimately determines the best time to visit.

June to August is the most popular period as this is when you get perfect tropical weather with clear skies, lots of sunshine and next-to-no rainfall. However, the temperatures are even higher from March to May and in September and October. Visiting at these times also means fewer people and calmer waters offering optimal diving conditions.

Encounter Mozambique’s game all year round

The high season is also the best time for game viewing, especially from July to October as this is when the bush has thinned out and lots of animals gather around the few remaining water sources.

June to November is ideal if you’re interested in whale watching, as this is when humpback whales make their epic migration from Antarctica to East Africa’s warmer waters to have their young. And although some tourists are put off by the heavy rainfall from December to February, it is worth considering for the lush scenery, promising bird watching opportunities and turtle nesting along the coast.

What is the best way to explore mozambique.

You reach most of Mozambique’s beach destinations by air from Johannesburg or Dar es Salaam to the main towns (Pemba for Quirimbas, Vilanculos for Bazaruto), followed by a smaller aircraft and/or boat transfer to your lodge. Travelling to out-of-the-way islands will often be done by boat and could require you to wade in the sea to get in and out. Exploring Mozambique’s safari areas may also be done by boat, in addition to guided tours by car or on foot.

The question of when to travel to Mozambique depends on many things including your interests, exactly where you want to visit and why you're going.

The country broadly follows South Africa’s weather pattern, with the rains falling largely between December and March .

This does vary a little between the north and south of the country, with the rains lasting a few weeks longer in the north than the south, but the pattern is the same. Humidity can be uncomfortably high during this period.

By around April or May the rains subside, the sun comes out and the humidity drops – better weather spreads gradually from the south to the north.

June to October is the dry season, with often perfect tropical weather: clear skies, plenty of sun and almost no rain. This is the best time for most people to visit Mozambique. Although still tropical, June, July and August are Mozambique's coolest months; you'll need a light duvet at night, even though the temperature reaches over 30°C by day. During September and October it remains dry as daytime temperatures climb, though it cools down a lot at night.

November is a less predictable month of transition. Sometimes the rains start, although many days remain sunny and hot. The rains generally start earlier in the north of the country.

Mozambique has become a favorite beach and island holiday destination. The warm, crystal blue water of the Indian Ocean makes it ideal for big game fishing, safaris, scuba diving and romantic getaways.

Two clusters of islands on the horizon include the Bazaruto Archipelago and the Quirimbas Archipelago – perfect for slowing down and enjoying the easy pace of island life, fresh seafood and sunset cruises aboard a traditional Dhow.

There’s more to Mozambique than laid-back island living, it also offers a plethora of big game, with the game reserves being a popular choice for safari, including the beautiful Gorongosa National Park.

Ponta do Ouro

Ponta do Ouro is a town in the extreme south of Mozambique, lying on the Mozambique Channel south of Maputo and just north of the border with South Africa. It is known for its beach, for its dolphins and for its offshore diving and deep-sea fishing. Must see attractions include a small shop called Ponki which sells authentic hand-woven kikois at affordable prices and the bustling downtown market. Fresh seafood is displayed in colorful cooler boxes and you can buy enormous crayfish, lobsters, prawns, and fish.

Maputo is the fascinating capital city of Mozambique. With its Portuguese colonial heritage, its vibrant residents, bustling markets and its delicious seafood cuisine, there are plenty of tourist attractions for everyone in Maputo. Must see attractions include the Natural History Museum, the Old Portuguese Fort, Inhaca and Portuguese Islands accessible by ferry, the Maputo Elephant Reserve, and the beautiful Maputo Central Railway Station which was designed by Gustave Eiffel.

Vilanculos is a small, vibrant, coastal town 700 kilometers from the Mozambique capital, Maputo. It boasts a new international airport and is the gateway to the idyllic offshore island of Bazaruto Archipelagos. Vilanculos is a piece of paradise with dazzling powder-white beaches, coconut palms, crystal blue waters, superb all-year-round temperate climate and is the perfect hideaway for a holiday that offers a perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. Adventure comes in so many forms – best marlin fishing in the world, snorkeling, boating, diving, kite surfing and just good old swimming. Dhow sailboat trips and motorboat trips are offered by many to fulfill your adrenaline rush or provide the amazing opportunity of swimming with dolphins or sea turtles.Vilanculos is just pure bliss!

Tofo is a coastal town in southeastern Mozambique, near the town of Inhambane. It's known for the curved Tofo Beach and nearby coral reefs which attract sea life. Sea turtles and huge manta rays circle at Manta Reef. Tofo is one of the best destinations for divers to see whale sharks and is a surfers paradise. Discover the small African street market where you can buy fresh produce and small odds and ends. If you are an angler, go fishing for King Mackerel, Dorado, Wahoo, Bonito and Yellowfin Tuna during peak season from June to August. Or hire a horse from the stables and ride along the beach in warm sea breezes. Alternatively laze on the beach all day swimming, tanning and reading long novels.

Bazaruto Archipelago

The Bazaruto Archipelago consists of six idyllic islands lying off the Mozambique coastal town of Vilankulo (Vilanculos): Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina (Paradise Island), Bangue and Pansy Shell Island. Mozambique Holidays to the Archipelago are some of the best on the African continent. Renowned as the “Pearl of the Indian Ocean” the Bazaruto Archipelago offers exclusive accommodation options, relaxation, and incredible sunrises and sunsets. Benguerra Island

Benguerra Island in Mozambique is the second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago, which broke away from the mainland thousands of years ago. Benguerra Island is approximately 55 square kilometers in extent, ensuring guests ample privacy within this idyllic paradise. The Island declared a National Park in 1971 sustains a diverse population of fauna and flora including forest, savannah and wetland ecosystems. Benguerra Island offers pristine beaches and unspoiled coral reefs teeming with marine life. Benguerra is an underwater wonderland for divers, with a rich variety of tropical fish species complemented by Africa’s only population of the rare dugong. The deep Mozambique Channel, which runs alongside the island, is renowned for its game fish and Benguerra Island offers some of the world’s best catch-and-release deep sea fishing and fly fishing opportunities.

Quirimbas Islands

Stretching more than 100 kilometers along the Indian Ocean, The Quirimbas Archipelago is set just off the northern coast of Mozambique. Many of its islands are part of Quirimbas National Park, which is known for coral reefs and waters inhabited by dolphins, whales and endangered dugongs (sea cows). Secluded Matemo, Medjumbe, and Vamizi islands have long beaches and phenomenal dive sites. Mangrove-covered Ibo Island features colonial-era ruins, including forts.  The Quirimbas Islands offer unique, unspoiled accommodation choices for visitors all year round.

Pemba Island, known as "The Green Island" in Arabic, is an island forming part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, lying within the Swahili Coast in the Indian Ocean. Pemba is a popular tourist destination for water sport and diving enthusiasts. Pemba Bay forms a huge harbor and stunning coral reefs lie close to shore providing wonderful diving and snorkeling adventures. The surrounding landscape of the bay is characterized by forests of Baobab trees growing down to the shoreline. Dhow safaris are also a highlight and popular way to sail around the bay and beyond.

Gorongosa National Park

Gorongosa National Park is a preserved area in the Great Rift Valley of central Mozambique and has been the featured park for several National Geographic documentaries. A successful conservation story - Gorongosa’s forests and savannahs are home to lions, hippos, and elephants. Lake Urema and its surrounding wetlands and rivers attract scores of water birds. The multi-tiered Murombodzi Falls spills over jagged rocks on the slopes of Mount Gorongosa. Limestone gorges and bat-filled caves define Cheringoma Plateau. Garongosa offers open vehicle game drives through a diversity of habitat, wildlife, and outstanding birdlife. You will have the opportunity to look over spectacular floodplains and explore mystical fever tree and palm forests whilst searching for the resident wildlife. A remarkable diversity of antelope, numerous primates, and great birdlife are always encountered. With a bit of luck, you could find lions, large elephant herds, buffalo, hippopotamus and some really enormous crocodiles.

With 2,500 km worth of mesmerising coastline, powder-white sandy beaches lined with gently swaying palm trees, and some of the best up-and-coming national parks around, it’s a wonder how Mozambique remains relatively quiet and off the ‘go-to’ list for many travellers.

This sprawling goliath of a country is bordered by South Africa and Eswatini to the south, Zambia and Zimbabwe to the west, and Malwai and Tanzania in the north, with the great Mozambique Channel separating the country from Madagascar to the east.

Mozambique is often considered almost two countries, the south, well attended by holidaymakers coming up from South Africa and much more developed and the north, lacking in infrastructure but providing the kind of rough and ready experience that you really only get in a few places in the world these days.

If you’re looking for some history accompanied by breathtaking colonial architecture, then look no further than Ibo Island and Ilha de Moçambique, two tiny parcels of land just off the Mozambique coast where time appears to have come to a grinding halt.

Central Mozambique

Bazaruto Island , located just north of Vilankulos on the mainland, has built up a reputation as not only the best diving and snorkelling spot in Mozambique but perhaps even anywhere in East Africa. To the south of the island lies the famed 2-mile reef, a barrier reef that runs down to the northern point of Benguerra Island nearby.

On the mainland, just north of Vilankulos and inspired by the Greek islands, lies Santorini Mozambique , a group of 5* villas, which breathe new life into the word luxurious. A little bit Greece, a little bit Mozambique, this is quite simply a spectacular place to spend a holiday.

Further west is one of the pearls in Mozambique’s crown. The Gorongosa National Park is not only a great success story for the country but the continent as a whole. The animal population that plummeted to tragic depths during the conflict continues to rebound with startling speed and the Gorongosa National Park is now providing a unique safari experience without the large crowds.

Southern Mozambique

Mozambique’s busy bustling port capital Maputo lies in the very south of the country, just 125 km north of the South African border and even closer to the frontier with Eswatini. The city encompasses a heady mix of fading colonial architecture, wide European-style avenues, and a thriving cultural scene. Maputo is the perfect place to either begin or end your Mozambican adventure.

100 kilometres southeast of the city the Maputo Special Reserve combines lakes, wetlands, swamp forests, grasslands, and mangrove forests with a coastline and is an excellent place to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, and recently reintroduced and not seen in the region since the 1960s, cheetahs.

Best time to visit Mozambique for a safari

Mozambique’s climate is warm and tropical in the north and subtropical in the south with average daytime coastal temperatures between 24°C and 28°C in the dry season and up to 31°C in the wet season.

The weather along the coastline is generally warm and sunny throughout the year. Diving and snorkelling are at their best from April to June and from September to November. During these months the visibility is very good as the water is clear and calm. The best time for wildlife viewing is from July to October, the bush has thinned out and animals gather around the few remaining water sources.

Wet Season (December to April)

This season is generally wet. It usually rains in brief but vigorous downpours after which the sun comes out again. Due to a lack of road infrastructure, the December through April rainy season can cause occasional flooding and temporarily unusable roads, particularly in the south of Mozambique.

Note that the period between January and February is cyclone season in southern Mozambique and we advise avoiding the Bazaruto Archipelago at this time.

Dry season (May to November)

This season is when to go to Mozambique for cooler temperatures and the least chance of rain. August and September are the best months for game viewing as the bush has thinned out and wildlife is concentrated around rivers and waterholes.

• Kruger National Park

The southern section of South Africa’s Kruger National Park is absolutely breathtaking. The region is noted for its plentiful wildlife, with the Crocodile River separating it from green farmland. The river is also a great place to see crocodiles and hippos in their natural habitat. Known as the ‘Southern Circle’, this area of Kruger is particularly well-known for its rhinos and lions, with each pride displaying distinct hunting skills and behaviours, a fascinating spectacle to observe.

Santa Maria Peninsula

The Santa Maria Peninsula, nestled below Inhaca Island , is a hidden gem with real Mozambique charm. The charming Machangulo Peninsula, as it is also known, overlooks the beautiful Maputo Bay. The village is surrounded by lush mangroves and features a traditional market and local restaurants, serving delicious Mozambican cuisine. Arriving for Safari

Get some rest on the first day of your arrival – you may need some time to adjust to a different time zone. Rather arrive a day early to rest and start off your tour refreshed and ready for adventure!

When you need to exchange your currency, avoid any exchanges on the street or in other areas that may seem suspect. Always note that even when people approach you with an, e.g., 50% premium exchange rate offer, this exchange is considered part of the black market and is illegal! Hotels, Camps and Lodges can change money, but sometimes the rate is slightly lower. We recommend that you visit an accredited Bureau de Change.

DAY 1 MOZ ART & CITY TOUR & WELCOME DINNER

Moz Art is a 4 hour workshop. You will learn the batik painting technique and “arame” and make your own souvenirs. The welcome dinner will be in a special place to start the trip with a blast.

Dinner is on us today! Welcome to Mozambique.

We will stay at Vila das Mangas in Maputo. One of the best Guest Houses in Town.

DAY 2 MAPUTO SPECIAL RESERVE

We will leave early to Maputo Special Reserve and spend the day there. It’s a beautiful park, pure nature.

We will camp at Maputo Special Reserve, Membene beach. It will be an experience of a lifetime. If we are lucky we might see turtles coming to the beach at night.

Today all meals are included. We will have a barbecue in the evening.

DAY 3 MAPUTO SPECIAL RESERVE

We will wake up with the sound of waves on one side and bush wildlife on the other side.

Let’s spend some time at the beach after breakfast and get on our way a bit before midday for a bit more of Safari.

We will drive sleep in Maputo today and enjoy some of Maputo restaurants and night life.

DAY 4 BILENE

We will leave Maputo after breakfast and reach the beautiful beach of Bilene towards the end of the afternoon. We will stay at Praia do Cossa Lodge. A beautiful place on the lagoon.

Breakfast and lunch are included

DAYS 5, 6 & 7 TOFO

We shall leave Bilene around 9:00 and reach Tofo at 13:00.

Tofo is one of most beautiful bays in Mozambique. You might want to swim with whale sharks and dolphins, or scuba dive, or just relax.

We will stay for 3 nights in Tofo at Hotel Tofo Mar. One of the best hotels in Tofo, right on the beach. (Breakfast included)

DAYS 8 & 9 VILANKULOS & BAZARUTO

We shall leave for Vilankulos on the morning of Day 7. As it is not a long journey, we will slowly say goodbye to Tofo and reach Vilankulos in time for lunch.

We will stay at Archipelago Resort, a beautiful resort on Vilankulos beach, with a view of the Bazaruto Islands. The resort also has a pool and restaurant and an extensive tropical garden.

Day 9 includes a boat trip to Bazaruto Island which is one of the Mozambican treasures, known for its amazing snorkeling. Lunch is of course included on this day trip. Breakfast at Archipelago Resort also included.

DAYS 10 & 11 MACANETA BEACH

We will leave Vilankulos around 8:30 so that we are in Macaneta before sun down. This is the last long road trip, followed by the last day to be enjoyed relaxing on the beach.

We will stay in Macanetaat Tan’Biki, a very nice lodge with a pool, restaurant and beach. Dinner is on us, being our farewell party.

Breakfast is, of course, also included.

DAY 12 MAPUTO

Drop-off anywhere in Maputo is included. Macaneta is very close to Maputo, so we can have several drop-offs during the day and those who want to stay longer in Macaneta are welcome to do so.
