Offers up to 70,000 bonus Qantas Points and a discounted annual fee of $150 in the first year, which goes to $250 after that.

  • Up to 70,000 bonus Qantas Points offer
  • Discounted $150 first-year annual fee
  • Standard balance transfer rate of 0% p.a. for 12 months
  • Earn 0.66 points per $1 spent on eligible purchases
  • Complimentary insurance covers and concierge services
  • A 3% fee applies to any balances transferred
  • Offers up to 44 days interest-free on purchases, compared to other cards that offer up to 55 days
  • Points cap could restrict potential points earning

The NAB Qantas Rewards Premium Credit Card earns 0.66 points per $1 to $3,000 spent per statement period and then 0.33 points per $1 spent up to $6,000. So if you plan to put more than $6,000 each month, you may want to compare credit cards to find one with a higher (or no) points cap.

Before you get started, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements and have the necessary information to complete your application.

Eligibility criteria

  • Residency. You can apply if you're an Australian citizen or permanent resident. If you are not a citizen or permanent resident, you will need to have an acceptable visa. Many visas are acceptable but the following are not: Visitor Visa (exception, a Special Category Visa - NZ Citizen is acceptable), Working Holiday, Student, Exchange/gap year, Transit/short stay/seasonal and Bridging.
  • New cardholder. The bonus points offer and 0% balance transfer promotion are only available to new NAB customers.
  • Eligible balance transfer debt. You can request to transfer up to 90% of your approved credit limit from Australian non-NAB credit card accounts.
  • Age. You must be at least 18 years old to apply.

Required documents

  • Personal information. This includes your full name, residential address, email address, contact number and Australian driver's licence number.
  • Employment and income. You need to provide details about your main source of income, job title and your employer's name and contact details. You may also be asked to provide several recent payslips or your latest tax statement and accountant's details.
  • Finances. As well as your income, you need to provide details on your other assets, existing credit cards, debts and other liabilities. You'll also be asked to provide details of your share of regular spending on essentials such as utilities, groceries and subscriptions.
  • Frequent flyer number. If you're already a Qantas Frequent Flyer, you'll need to include your frequent flyer membership number to start earning points.
  • Balance transfer details. If you're conducting a balance transfer, you'll need to include how much you're transferring and some details about the old account.
  • Up to 70,000 bonus Qantas Points. The NAB Qantas Reward Premium offers 60,000 bonus Qantas Points when you apply as a new cardholder and spend $2,000 on eligible purchases in the first 60 days from card approval. These points will be credited to your account within 3 months of meeting the spend requirement. You'll also get an additional 10,000 bonus Qantas Points when you keep the card open for at least 12 months. And these points will be credited in the 13th month. There is no specified expiry date for this offer but NAB may withdraw or vary it at any time.
  • Discounted first-year annual fee. New cardholders pay a discounted $150 annual fee in the first year with this introductory offer. After the first year, a $250 p.a. annual fee applies.
  • Qantas Points per $1 spent. This card earns 0.66 Qantas Points per $1 on eligible purchases for the first $3,000 per statement period, then 0.33 points per $1 for spending up to $6,000 in that statement period. You also earn 1 additional Qantas Point per $1 on eligible spending with Qantas. Eligible purchases include most everyday spending but transactions that don't earn points include cash advances, balance transfers and payments to the ATO.
  • Complimentary insurance. This card offers five complimentary insurance covers issued by Allianz. You can enjoy the eligible purchases you’ve made with the card and also be covered by purchase protection insurance and extended warranty insurance. You can also get domestic flight insurance and car rental excess in Australia insurance. A qualifying purchase is required to get insurance cover.
  • Concierge service. Your 24/7 concierge service can help you with travel bookings, restaurant recommendations and reservations, securing concert tickets and more.
  • Complimentary Qantas Frequent Flyer membership. If you're not already a Qantas Frequent Flyer member, this card will waive the standard joining fee of $99.50.
  • Balance transfer offer. This card offers an introductory 0% p.a. interest rate on balance transfers for 12 months with a 3% balance transfer fee. But keep in mind that minimum monthly repayments are required and any unpaid balances will attract the variable cash advance rate at the end of the introductory period. So, similar to other balance transfer offers, you'll typically get more value from it if you focus on paying off the transferred balance before using the card to earn points per $1 on new spending.
  • Mobile wallets. You can add this card to Apple Pay , Google Pay , Samsung Pay , Fitbit Pay and Garmin Pay to make payments straight from your device/s.

Rates & fees

  • Annual fee. Outside of any promotions, the NAB Qantas Rewards Premium Card charges an annual fee of $250.
  • Purchase rate. A 20.99% p.a. variable interest rate applies to purchases made with this card.
  • Interest-free days. You'll get up to 44 days interest-free on purchases when you pay your balance in full. Or, if your statement shows an "interest free days amount", when you pay that amount in full by the statement due date.
  • Cash advance rate. This card charges a variable cash advance rate of 21.74% p.a.
  • International transaction fee. A fee worth 3% of the Australian dollar amount applies when you use this card for foreign currency transactions.

Re this point “These points will be credited to your account within 3 months of meeting the spend requirement.” How long does it take on average for the points to be added to the Qantas account? Will the points still be there should I decide to cancel the card?

Amy Bradney-George Finder

The terms and conditions for this offer simply state that points will be added to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account “within 3 months of meeting the spend requirement”, so you’ll typically need to factor that timeframe into your decision. If you have further questions about this offer, you can contact NAB on 13 22 65. It’s also worth noting that points earned per $1 of eligible spending on this card are typically added to your frequent flyer account after each statement period (within 2 days of the closing date on your statement).

In regards to cancelling the card, any points that have been added to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account will remain there, subject to the Qantas Frequent Flyer terms and conditions. I hope this helps.

Interstate traveler

July 11, 2023

Hi, I’m traveling interstate and hiring a car, it would seem this card (which I have) offers car rental insurance excess of up $5000, if I opt to not take the car hire companies insurance my excess will be $4,100.

1. Does this mean I am fully covered by the the credit card for the insurance excess

2. Do I need to do anything before hiring the car ior do I just contact NAB after the fact if I did need to claim the $4,100 excess?

Hi Catherine,

Thanks for your question.

Eligible spending to earn Qantas Points includes most everyday transactions.

NAB considers these types of transactions as ineligible and you therefore will not earn points: Cash advances, bank charges, balance transfers, buying foreign exchange or travellers cheques, ATO payments, transactions where a cardholder uses a card to access linked transaction accounts and transactions for gambling or gaming purposes.

Hope this helps,

Is there a online calculator I could use to work out how much points I could potentially earn from the amount I spend. I am planning on spending around $8000.

Avatar

Nikki Angco

I’m afraid that there’s no available online calculator to compute points. Although, this is how you may compute your $8,000 spending, manually:

Notes: You will earn 0.66 points per $1 on eligible purchases for the first $3,000 spent per statement period. For spending between $3,001 and $6,000 in a statement period, you will earn 0.33 points per $1 spent on your eligible purchases. There’s a cap of 3,000 points for every statement period.

How to compute: 0.66 x $3,000 = 1,980 points (earned in the first statement period) 0.33 x $5,000 = 1,650 points (earned in your next statement period)

You can also log into your NAB online banking account where you can conveniently view your points and redeem them when you’re ready.

Cheers, Nikki

Hi, I’m about to travel interstate. If I hire a car using my nab Qantas card, will my complimentary travel insurance give me total insurance protection, or do I need to purchase additional insurance from the car hire company?

Avatar

[email protected] Finder

Thanks for your inquiry. Please note that we are not affiliated with NAB or any company we feature on our site and so we can only offer a general advice.

Yes, NAB Qantas Rewards Premium Credit Card includes Interstate flight insurance under their complimentary travel insurance. You may be covered for rental vehicle insurance excess if you rent a car. There are more insurances covered for this card as stated on this page.

We suggest contacting NAB directly to confirm this info or visit their official site.

Hope this helps.

Best regards, Rench

Travel insurance for Canada isn’t compulsory, but it’s highly recommended to cover for any lost or stolen baggage, the possibility of your trip getting cancelled due to an emergency, illness such as Covid-19 or bereavement, and to cover medical expenses.

The Australian Government’s Smartraveller website recommends that travellers purchase travel insurance before any overseas trip.

As in any foreign country, medical care in Canada can be expensive for visitors, with a visit to a doctor potentially setting you back by hundreds of dollars.

The Australian government won’t cover these costs, and there is no reciprocal healthcare agreement between Australia and Canada, so you aren’t covered by Australian Medicare either.

In addition, given the large geography of the country covering a variety of destinations from beaches to mountains to national parks, it is wise to hold insurance cover for a multitude of events and a variety of potential risks including natural disasters, crime or other types of emergencies.

International travel cover for Canada is generally available in the following ways:

Basic travel insurance

This type of policy is broadly focused on cover for unlimited overseas emergency medical expenses, but also includes insurance for luggage, personal liability and other essential benefits. It is usually the cheapest option available and is suitable for those traveling on a budget or for single trips.

Comprehensive travel insurance

This type of insurance typically includes higher amounts of cover for the essentials benefits such as medical expenses, luggage, personal liability, and so on. In addition, it includes cover for travel delays, rental vehicle excess, loss of passports and credit cards, hijacking, disability, accidental death, and more, depending on your policy.

Some insurers offer variations of the comprehensive policy that are suitable for multiple trips within a 12-month period.

Optional add-on policies

Given the growing number of Australians heading to Canada for cruises, road trips or to the ski slopes, some insurers have come up with add-on policies specifically tailored for a variety of adventure sports and transport options available. These include cruise packs, winter sports packs and even higher cover for rental vehicles.

Related: How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost?

Most international travel insurance policies will cover medical and hospital expenses, ambulance transportation, repatriation flights, as well as personal liability if you injure someone, or damage property while you’re in the country.

Policies will also cover, within limits, lost or delayed luggage and possessions, the costs of trip delays, interruptions or cancellations, and lost or stolen travel documents.

Comprehensive policies usually offer a broader cover to include personal accident cover in case of an injury during your trip that leads to permanent disability or death, and insurance excess payment if your rental car meets with an accident.

If you are planning to take advantage of Canada’s vast offering of adventure sports and activities, make sure these are covered by your policy—or that there is an option to add it on.

Most comprehensive policies will include popular sporting and leisure activities such as hiking, surfing, kayaking, and so on. However, more extreme activities such as skydiving, scuba diving, snow skiing or snowboarding will generally require an additional adventure sports cover at extra cost.

Most travel insurance policies to Canada will not provide cover in the following cases:

  • Illegal activities: Insurers will reject any claims arising if you knowingly act illegally or dangerously.
  • If you are under the influence: Insurance cover is specifically void if you cause a disturbance through drunken behaviour or under the influence of drugs.
  • Unattended luggage: Insurers will ignore any claim for loss if your luggage is stolen while it was left unattended in public.
  • Pre-existing medical conditions: Insurers can avoid claims for any major medical conditions, if they have not been made aware of these before taking out a policy.
  • Extreme sports: International travel insurance policies generally don’t provide automatic coverage for things like extreme sports, snowboarding or surfing. An optional add-on cover is required for these activities.

Most travel insurers in Australia offer insurance policies for travel to Canada. What policy suits you best will depend on your requirements including duration, age, and the type of cover.

It will also be determined by your specific needs, such as whether you are taking part in snow sports or other adventure activities.

An easy way to compare travel insurance policies is to use an online comparison tool, or read through our leading picks of travel insurance policies for Australians . However, always consider whether or not they include the extras you will require for your trip, and any pre-existing medical conditions you would require cover for.

Do I need travel insurance to travel to Canada?

Travel insurance for Canada isn’t mandatory, but is highly recommended.

The Australian Government urges travellers to purchase travel insurance before any overseas trip, especially for medical cover.

Medical costs can be extremely expensive in a foreign country, especially if you have to visit a doctor, dentist or hospital in an emergency, so travel insurance is very handy.

Does my visa card have travel insurance?

Not every credit card comes with travel insurance. Complimentary travel insurance is typically offered on premium credit or rewards cards that have higher annual fees. In addition, this may not cover all circumstances or emergencies. By comparison, a travel insurance policy will offer more comprehensive coverage that includes emergency medical expenses.
