Remembering NASCAR’s Southwest Tour Series

Super late model touring provide some of the very best racing in the United States.  In many cases, these smaller events are better than the big league races put on by NASCAR’s top three touring series.  Regardless of where you live in the lower 48 states, chances are there is an SLM series that races near you.  For those of us who live on the west coast like me, the premiere SLM touring series is the Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series.  The SRL Series began racing in 2001 but did not hold the title of being the top SLM series on the west coast.  That was reserved for the now extinct NASCAR Southwest Tour Series.

Prior to 1985, the west coast did not have a touring series where the best short track drivers raced against each other on a week-to-week, race-to-race basis for an overall series championship.  Things changed with the formation of the NASCAR All-American Challenge Northwest Series which was formed that year.  A year later, another series was formed for the southwest portion of the United States in what came to be known as the NASCAR Southwest Tour Series.  The inaugural season featured 13 races at tracks as far north as Shasta Speedway in Anderson, California, as far south as the famed Riverside International Raceway road course and as far east as Silver State Raceway in Carson City, Nevada.  In later years, the series schedule would expand even more with 20 or more races.

The 1986 crown was won by a driver who is now considered to be a west coast short track racing legend, Ron Esau .  In following years, the trend of top notch west coast talent would prove to be champions in the series.  Drivers like Mike Chase , Roman Calczynski and Dan Press won titles in 1987, 1988 and 1989 and while they were not recognized in a nationwide scale, all three are regarded as being among the greatest short track racers in the western region.

The 90s began producing talent that was able to make noise in NASCAR’s upper echelons, thanks namely to the creation of the NASCAR Craftsmen SuperTruck Series in 1995.  Doug George won the Southwest Tour crown in 1990 and currently serves as crew chief for truck series driver, Jason White .  Rick Carelli won the 1991 title and later became a regular in the SuperTrucks winning four times in his career.  Most recently, Carelli has served as spotter and driver coach for both Regan Smith and Danica Patrick .

One of the most famous names produced by the tour is Ron Hornaday, Jr. who won back-to-back titles in 1992 and 1993.  Of course he’s recognized now as being the most decorated driver in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series having won four championships and 51 races as well as four races in NASCAR’s Busch Series.  Two other drivers who were Southwest Tour champions and moved on to race in the truck and Busch/Nationwide Series include Lance Hooper who was tour champion in 1995 and Matt Crafton who won the championship in 2000 and is a regular in the Camping World Truck Series with a total of two career victories.

No question the most famous alumni from the Southwest Tour Series is 2004 NASCAR Nextel Cup Champion, Kurt Busch .  The Las Vegas, Nevada native only raced the tour full-time for two seasons but made history in his second winning the 1999 crown by a record 328 points over second place.  Busch’s dominance in the series attracted the attention of Jack Roush and from there on Busch began his rise to fame and championships in the truck and Cup series.

In its final few years, the Southwest Tour Series seemed to lose a lot of its luster.  Many felt that NASCAR was abandoning the tour and focusing more on the top three series.  The final year for the Southwest Tour was 2006 with only eight races comprising the schedule.  Thankfully the SRL tour stepped in to fill the shoes of NASCAR’s Southwest Tour.

While the SRL’s Southwest Tour grows every season, it still has a long way to go to be what NASCAR’s Southwest Tour once was.  The SRL gained a huge boost with sponsorship in 2009 from the Spears Manufacturing Company which has been a west coast racing stalwart for more than 30 years.  The only thing the series is missing is a more expansive schedule with more venues.  There are several drivers currently racing in the Spears SRL Series that have the potential to move up in the NASCAR ranks such as Derek Thorn , Jacob Gomes and Jonathon Gomez .  Write these names down because they just might be the next Ron Hornaday, Jr. or Kurt Busch.

Irwindale Speedway Next for SPEARS Southwest Tour

The SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Series heads back to Irwindale Speedway for Round #4 of the 10-race 2022 season.

Bakersfield, CA - On May 21 st , the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour Series will head back to Irwindale Speedway for Round #4 of the 10-race 2022 season. Teams will race for a $6,000 payday in the “Spears Manufacturing 100 presented by Pinnacle Steakhouse”. The Spears Pro Late Models presented by Sigma Performance Services, and the Spears Modified Series will also be in action on the inner one-third mile, competing in the “Spears Manufacturing 60 presented by Optima Batteries” and the “Comp Cams 60 presented by Optima Batteries” respectively.

The Super Late Model event has 23 entries and will honor long-time Irwindale Speedway racer and former track Race Director Michael Atkinson (AKA Mike A), who passed away on February 11, 2021. “Mike A” has been at the speedway since it opened in 1999 and has been a fixture at the facility since. In honor of the long-time track supporter, Loyd McGhee and J&M Racing has added $1,000 to the winner’s share of the purse, with an additional $500 to the fast qualifier and another $500 for leading lap 17, his former racecar number.

Derek Thorn has won the last three Super Late Model events at the half-mile facility, including the season opening $25,000-to-win “All-Star Showdown 200”. With Thorn pursuing a national touring schedule in 2022, that streak will end on Saturday. Thorn is the winningest SRL winner at Irwindale with eight victories in 18 series starts. M.K. Kanke is second on the list with six victories, three in the NASCAR Southwest Tour Series and three in the SRL. Ryan Cansdale and Preston Peltier are the only other multi-time winners in the 22 previous series visits with two each.

Jacob Gomes enters the event as the championship leader, having scored wins at All America Speedway (CA) and Kern County Raceway Park (CA). Gomes has found Victory Lane very hard to reach at Irwindale, however. He has five top-five finishes in 20 career starts with a best result of second in this event in 2021. His 12 top-10 efforts see the Manteca, CA driver slightly below his career average, but as Gomes makes his 121st career start, he hopes he can grab just a little more luck to earn his 10 th series triumph.

“We just need a little better luck”, Gomes replied about getting to Victory Lane. “We’ve had a ton of really good runs there, leading, and then things go wrong. Hopefully we can have a little better luck this go-around. It would be great to get me a win there. It has been a hard track for me to conquer.”

Jace Hansen has had a strong 2022 season and currently sits second in the championship standings. The Greeley, CO driver has earned two top-five’s and with a season worst seventh at the “All-Star Showdown” in the season opener. He is coming off a career tying series best effort of second at Kern County Raceway Park and a victory in the local Super Late Model Division at Colorado National Speedway. He hopes his strong 2022 season continues and that his momentum will carry over to this weekend’s big event.

“A win at home really helps keep the guys motivated at the shop preparing for Irwindale”, Hansen stated! “It makes the team even more hungry for our first tour series win, but we know those aren't easy to come by. The whole group is putting a ton of effort into making sure we bring a competitive race car. The time and effort are there! Irwindale is one of my favorite tracks, so hopefully with this little boost of morale, and a little luck, we will be battling for another win next weekend!”

Jeremy Doss has been consistent in his return to the Spears Southwest Tour Super Late Models, earning top-five finishes in all three starts to sit third in the standings. That includes a second at All American Speedway in Round #2. But after a nine-win season in the Spears Pro Late Models in 2021, Doss is overdo for a win by his own standards. For Irwindale, he will be back behind the wheel of a Bob Lyon Super Late Model. It is the team for which he opened the season at the “All-Star Showdown 200” in February. Doss made his debut in this car at the “Snowball Derby” at Five Flags Speedway last December. The car has been refurbished with a new body and a new motor from Peters Racing Engines, giving Doss high hopes for a victory this weekend.

“I'm excited to be back behind the wheel of the #44 this weekend at Irwindale Speedway”, Doss stated. “It's the car we ran at the Snowball Derby with a brand-new Peters Racing Engine! I feel like Irwindale is a place you can use the power, which will definitely help. We've been consistent but haven't been in Victory Lane yet, but I feel like we can change that this weekend.”

Sitting tied for fourth in the championship standings is another driver with a family pedigree for winning. M.K. Kanke has a total of six NASCAR Southwest Tour and Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series victories at Irwindale. His son Cale hopes to get in the win column this weekend. The younger Kanke finished fourth in the series championship in 2021 and has started 2022 with one top-five and three top-10’s. His best run was a fourth at the season opening “All-Star Showdown 200” at Irwindale. He was the top finishing championship contender at that event, and he hopes everything will come together this weekend to get SRL win number one, in his 34 th career start.

“Such an interesting notion…the recipe for a win is always a combination of so many things”, Kanke reflected. “The consistency I have gained at Irwindale is due to our team’s experience, my dad’s advice, and having run a lot of laps. I do think Irwindale suits my driving style, as it is a multi-groove track that allows me to move around to maximize my car’s speed.”

Kanke continued, “I think the recipe for a win is when preparation creates and meets opportunity. Obviously, every competitor is trying to put together the winning recipe on any given race night. I think Irwindale would be a fine place for it all to come together!”

The driver tied with Kanke for fourth in the championship standings is Irwindale Speedway’s winningest driver Trevor Huddleston. Huddleston will be looking for his first series victory in his 23 rd start, and his 11th at Irwindale. Huddleston has scored four top-fives in those starts, with a best of second in 2017. He is a former Irwindale winner in the ARCA Menards Pro Series West and has won in almost every division that races at the half-mile oval. His win total is in the mid 70’s eclipsing Rip Michaels mark early in 2021. It is his experience at Irwindale that he hopes will get him to Victory Lane.

“High Point Racing has been racing at Irwindale for 20 plus years, so I'm pretty sure we can say that our notebook is pretty big”, Huddleston admitted. “We have lots of notes, laps, and time which equal wins. I'm just fortunate enough to be the one behind the wheel. To win in the SRL will both be a sigh of relief, as well insane happiness. The amount of blood sweat and tears we have put into these cars will be more than worth it, to end up in Victory Lane this weekend. This is one of the most premiere series out there, so winning no matter what the case, is something to be proud of.”

The top-five in the championship will be challenged by other teams who will be seeking the $6,000 winner’s prize. Two-time and defending Five Flags Speedway Allen Turner Pro Late Model track champion Chris Davidson will make the trip from Taylor Lake Village, TX to Irwindale. It will be his fourth series start, where his best finish was at Irwindale with a 10 th .

Former Irwindale winner Eric Schmidt will be seeking his sixth series victory. The Roseville, CA driver was the 2006 series champion and the championship runner-up in 2018. He is an All-American Speedway (CA) and Stockton 99 Speedway (CA) track champion, as well as a Pacific Challenge Series Champion, earning eight wins in only 20 starts.

Kulwicki Driver Development Program finalist Dylan Zampa will make his series debut in a Sigma Performance Services Super Late Model. Zampa earned the ride by winning the Sigma Performance Services “Young Gun” Award in the Spears Pro Late Model Series in 2021. Zampa will be in a Super Late Model for the first time. It is a chance that he is thrilled to take advantage of.

“I’m definitely excited for the opportunity to drive a “Super” for the first time”, Zampa stated. “I had the opportunity to visit Joe (Farre’) and the guys at SPS (Sigma Performance Services), and their operation is top notch. I’m excited to race against some of the best Super Late Model drivers on the West Coast for sure. I’ve had the opportunity to compete against a few of them like (Jacob) Gomes, (Jeremy) Doss, (Buddy) Shepherd, and (Blaine) Rocha, but I’m sure this will be a totally different experience.”

Jake Bollman will also make his series debut in a car owned by Scott Sanchez. The Huntington Beach, CA racer has been participating in Pro Late Model events on both coasts of the country. He earned a top-five and two top 10’s in three starts for Rackley – W.A.R. Racing at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway (TN). He opened his season with a second place run in the Spears Pro Late Model Series at the All-Star Showdown at Irwindale Speedway.

The Spears Modified Series will compete in Round #5 of their nine-race season. 17 Modifieds are entered for the “Spears Manufacturing 60 presented by Optima Batteries”. Jaron Giannini leads the championship standings after winning the season opener at Havasu 95 Speedway. Sam Jacks sits second in the season standings followed by Jimmy Sloan, Kyle Jacks and William Guevara. Two-time winner Travis Thirkettle sits sixth in the standings with Ray Mros, Kevin Vossen, Chris Dalton, and Stephen Brucker the top-10. All 10 are entered this weekend. Donna Gunther and R.J. Smotherman are scheduled to make their first series starts in the “Comp Cams 60 presented by Optima Batteries”.

In the Spears Pro Late Models, Tyler Reif is the championship leader after four rounds. He will be looking for his first series victory in the “Spears Manufacturing 60 presented by Optima Batteries”. Reif has a best finish of second but has finished no worse than sixth. Seth Wise sits second after winning at Kern County Raceway in the Winter Showdown. Tanner Reif sits third after finishing second at the most recent Kern County Raceway event. All American Speedway winner and 2022 Kulwicki Driver Development Program finalist Dylan Zampa sits fourth in the standings. Dylan’s older brother Logan Zampa is fifth, after a best finish of fourth. The series is averaging 21.5 cars per event in 2022.

Spectator Gates open at 4:00pm with qualifying rolling off at 4:30pm for the Spears Pro Late Model Series, Spears Manufacturing Modified Series, and the Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series. An Autograph Session will take place from 5:45pm to 6:30pm with the National Anthem at 6:45pm. Main Events are scheduled to begin at 7:00pm for the Pro Late Models, Spears Modified and the Spears SRL Southwest Tour. A RV Figure-8 will follow the 100-lap feature with Fireworks closing out the evening’s festivities.

2023 Season Banquet Draws Near

Norcal legends to visit rar twice in 2024, srl tour to return to rar in 2024, latest news, remembering the north state modified series.

Redwood Acres Raceway is a 3/8-mile paved oval located in Eureka, California. The facility opened in 1947 Redwood Acres Raceway has also been known as Redwood Speedway, Redwood Acres Speedway and Eureka Speedway. RAR is one of the oldest active speedways not only in the western region but in the United States. There has not been a season where racing hasn't been active at the track since it has opened.

RAR began as a 5/8-mile dirt oval but was reconfigured in 1956 and 1957 to accommodate the NASCAR Grand National (now Monster Energy) Series. The speedway went from its original dirt configuration to its current asphalt layout in the 1987/1988 offseason. RAR features 6 degrees of banking on the front stretch, 2 degrees of banking on the back and 12 degrees in the turns. The raceway is one of the biggest short tracks in California with only Kern County Raceway Park (1/2-mile) and Shasta Speedway (3/8-mile) being as large or larger.

Over the years, RAR has hosted numerous "big-time" events. Besides hosting NASCAR's Grand National Series, the track has featured events featuring the NASCAR Pacific Coast Late Model Series, later known as Winston West and currently known as the K&N Pro West Series. From 1988-1994 and in 1995, the NASCAR Southwest Tour Series visited the speedway once a year. In fact, RAR's events were under NASCAR's sanction from 1988 through 1995.

The season finale in late September of 1990 was the beginning of the annual Fall Spectacular which became the biggest race of each year. The 100-lap open competition late model race has seen the very best late model drivers in the region compete. RAR has played host to other top late model competitors over the years with races from the Nor-Cal Best In The West Series, the North State Challenge Series and more recently the Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series all taking place.

RAR is also very familiar with open-wheel action as the yearly IMCA/Grand American Modified portion of the Fall Spectacular was arguably the biggest race of the year for those drivers. The North State Modified Series has become a staple at the raceway the past several years with some of the best competition. Through the years, other open wheel series such as the Western Super Modified Racing Association, the BCRA Midgets and the USAC Western Sprint cars have pounded the Redwood Acres pavement.

As noted previously, many great names have raced at RAR. The 1956 NASCAR Grand National event was won by Herb Thomas who was not only one of the top drivers of the 1950s but has been inducted in numerous halls of fame. Another all-time great, Hershel McGriff is also a hall of fame racer who has not only raced but won at the raceway. NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Ron Hornaday, Jr. won twice at RAR in NASCAR's Southwest Tour Series. Of course, RAR has developed its own local legends over the years. Ferndale, California's Jim Walker is probably the most recognizable name. Walker is not only one of the most beloved drivers by fans all over the west coast, he's one of the most respected and admired by his racing peers.

How NASCAR First Visited The LA Coliseum in 1999

The street race lasted for three seasons and featured two drivers in this year's clash.

Image for article titled How NASCAR First Visited The LA Coliseum in 1999

While today’s Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum is the first time the NASCAR Cup Series will visit the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, it’s not the first time that a NASCAR-sanctioned series visited the iconic stadium. In a post-practice press conference, Kevin Harvick said, “I’m probably the only guy that’s been here. But, I think it’s way better than racing through the streets of LA that we did in the Southwest Tour car back in 1999 with the jump through the gutter and things like that.”

From 1998 to 2000, the NASCAR Southwest Tour held a street race outside the Coliseum. On the NASCAR’s end, the organization didn’t seek to race in California’s largest city. A former NASCAR executive recalled to the Daytona Beach News-Journal , “I was approached by some people in L.A. who said, ‘Let’s do a street race.’ They had plenty of money. It was going to be a big undertaking and I said, ‘I’m gonna have to charge you a pretty good chunk of change,’ and they said fine, just send the contract.”

Two Cup Series drivers in this year’s Clash rac ed in the LA Street Race, Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch. Despite being a stop on a regional tour, the event was able to attract stars from NASCAR’s national series. Ken Schrader , Ron Hornaday, Jr., Matt Crafton and Mark Martin all took part in at least one edition of the event. Perennial NASCAR road course ringer Boris Said also raced alongside helping to design the temporary street course.

The one-mile temporary circuit ran around the neighboring Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena utilizing perimeter roads and a double hairpin in a parking lot. The tight corners of the course created a caution-filled environment with little green-flag racing. Of the 340 laps raced during the street circuit’s three annual events, 122 laps were run under caution. Kevin Harvick finished neither of the two races he participated in. Maybe Harvick will be able to complete all 150 laps of the feature race tonight.

News and Notes Colorado National Speedway “Salted Metals 150”

nascar southwest tour

Event: The “Salted Metals 150” for the Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series will be Event #6 of the nine-race series schedule. It will take place on August 12 th at Colorado National Speedway (CO) and pay $10,000 to the winner thanks to the Winner’s Bonus from PFC Brakes. Thanks to David Nava Mulcahy and Salted Metals, $500 will be awarded to the Fast Qualifier, Halfway Leader, Longest Tow, and Hard Charger. $1,500 will be paid to start, for those travelling over 500 miles, and on the Spears Manufacturing Frequent Flyer Program.

History: This will be the first trip to Colorado National Speedway (CNS) for the Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series since 2007, when Cris Muhler beat M.K. Kanke, Darren Bucklen, Dan Holtz, and Steve Belletto to the finish line. The first NASCAR Southwest Tour Series event at CNS was held in 1992 with Rick Carelli winning over Ron Hornaday Jr. A total of 21 Southwest Tour races have been held at the 3/8-mile asphalt oval. Two-time winners include Carelli, Auggie Vidovich, and M.K. Kanke. Single wins have gone to Doug George, Dale Williams, Mark Reed, Chris Raudman, Steve Portenga, Doug McCoun, Bruce Yackey, Jerry Robertson, Josh Vadnais, Eric Holmes, and Muhler.

Elder Memories: Lee Elder was the NASCAR Southwest Tour Series Media Coordinator from 1994 to 2000, as well as an award-winning author. Elder was present for 10 of those events at Colorado National Speedway and recalls the series exploits at the 3/8-mile multi-groove track.

“I believe we were at Colorado National when Lance Hooper established the Tour record with four consecutive poles. This was during his championship season in 1995. Lance didn’t win the race that night. Rick Carelli won it. I also remember the CNS surface dried faster than any racing surface I can remember. One night in 2000, we got beyond halfway before a rainstorm came through. The weather experts at the airport told us to expect the rain to continue, so we ended the race. The rain stopped a few minutes later, and the track was dry a short time after that, but the race had already been ended.”

“The other thing I remember is how good the competition was at CNS. The Tour races always drew the teams from the old Inter-Mountain Series and those cars were fast.”

Championship: Jacob Gomes (890 points) leads the Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series championship standings by a comfortable 110 point margin over John Moore (780). Leading Rookie-of-the-Year candidate Dylan Zampa (728) sits third in the standings followed by Cale Kanke (699) and rookie Nick Cooper (691). Austin Herzog (680), Dan Holtz (646), Andy Allen (640), Scott Sanchez (610) and Buddy Shepherd (507) round out the top-10. Zampa, Cooper, and Herzog lead the Rookie-of-the-Year standings.

Previous Starters: Darren Robertson, Bruce Yackey, Chris Eggleston, Cris Muhler, and Dan Holtz, are the only entered drivers, who participated with the Southwest Tour Series at CNS in 2007. Both Eggleston and Holtz led laps in the 2007 race, but came up short in the end, to winner Cris Muhler. Bruce Yackey won the NASCAR Southwest Tour Series race in 1999.

SRL Winners: Previous Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series winning drivers, entered for this weekend’s “Salted Metals 150”, include Jacob Gomes (16 wins), Jace Hansen (1), Dan Holtz (1), Dylan Zampa (1), Cris Muhler (1), Preston Peltier (2), and Blaine Rocha (2).

Colorado Winners: Nick Cooper, Jace Hansen, Darren Robertson, Bruce Yackey, Eddie Vecchiarelli, Chris Eggleston, Cody Dempster, Brett Yackey, Kody Vanderwal, Cris Muhler, Kyle Ray, Preston Peltier, and Michael Scott all have Super Late Model victories at Colorado National Speedway. Each are entered for this weekend’s event.

Strong Field: 29 Super Late Models are currently entered for this weekend’s action. There are five drivers with Late Model Touring Series Titles. Those include Jacob Gomes, Preston Peltier, Chris Eggleston, John Moore, and Cole Moore. 13 drivers have touring series Super Late Model wins.

Legend’s Son: M.K. Kanke was a two-time NASCAR Southwest Tour Series winner at CNS, as well as a winner in the Colorado Challenge Cup. He finished second when the SRL visited in 2007. This weekend, his son Cale will jump behind the wheel looking for his first SRL victory. He has three runner-up finishes in his last seven series starts and hopes his father’s experience at the 3/8-mile asphalt oval will propel him to Victory Lane.

“My Dad has been teaching me from the start”, Cale stated. “We work together. We have race talks each race to get better at the next one. We are excited for this next challenge. For my part, I am going to work on myself a bit to be meticulous with the line and figure out what areas of the track you can use and manipulate to race well. I think if we can systematically adjust the car, and capitalize on the characteristics of the track, we should gain some speed and put ourselves in a good position for a solid run.”

Redemption: Dan Holtz is one of only eight drivers to score victories with both the Spears SRL Southwest Tour and the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour series. Holtz almost grabbed a win in 2007, battling back and forth with Cris Muhler. But a late race tire leak ended his chances with a fourth-place finish. He will be looking for redemption this weekend.

“I ended up on the front row racing door to door on the outside for probably over 20 laps, with only a few inches between me and Muhler”, Holtz recalled the late race battle for the lead. “It was an incredible memory, and I almost won the race, but I had a right rear tire going down with about 10 laps to go, so I ended up in fourth place. There is no doubt that I have some unfinished business there, and I can’t wait to get back on that racetrack and get the job done.”

“The Race” Winner: Chris Eggleston has won plenty of big races in his career including a “Colorado Challenge Cup” win at CNS in 2011. That same season he grabbed a $75,000 win in “The Race” at North Wilkesboro Speedway (NC). He has yet to garner an SRL win, however, despite leading laps in the 2007 event. He was close that day, but a late race restart ended his shot at victory. Despite the outcome, Eggleston is excited to have the SRL return.

“I’m pretty excited”, Eggleston described his feelings about the SRL’s return for the first time in 16 years. “I remember that race vividly, as I was new to Super Late Model racing. For whatever reason, our car was hooked up on American Racer’s, and I thought we were going to win that race in front a of an electric hometown crowd. That was until M.K. (Kanke) drove over us on a restart with a handful of laps left. I remember the crowd, including my team and I, were pretty upset that night.”

Home Turf: Another Colorado based driver, that is excited for the series return, is three-time Super Late Model track champion Darren Roberton. Robertson began the season, looking to chase the SRL championship. But financial issues ended their run for Rookie-of-the-Year after Round #3. But Robertson is pleased to have the series visit his home track, after winning the last time the Super Late Models competed at CNS. He is hopeful to grab a victory, while taking on a talented field.

“I am excited for the SRL to come back to Colorado. I feel that Colorado puts on a great show for the fans that pack it in the stands”, Robertson stated. “I think we have a really good chance to bring home the win at our home track. I also know that it will not be an easy task. The SRL regulars are always fast when they come into town, and we also have a really talented competitive group that races regularly out here also. My dad (Jerry) has had success in finding Victory Lane a couple of different times when the “Tour” came into town, and I hope to add my name to the list on August 12th.”

KDDP in the House: Two former champions of the Kulwicki Driver Development Program will be entered in this weekend’s “Salted Metals 150”. 2022 and 2018 champions Dylan Zampa and Brett Yackey will compete against each other for the second time in 2023 SRL competition. Zampa leads the SRL Rookie-of-the-Year standings, while Yackey is the current championship leader at CNS. The Irwindale Speedway (CA) winner from May is excited to take on a fellow champion and grab a top-three finish in a brand new Super Late Model.

“I feel like going up against another KDDP champion is very cool”, Zampa expressed. “I’m hoping TR (Tom Roberts) will make it out to watch the race, and hopefully see two champs battle for the win. My goals for this race are to obviously go and try to win, but we also have a new car, so a top-three would be amazing. We also hope to get good notes for the next race. It’s going to be a hard race to win, with all the local drivers and regular SRL drivers. But I’m ready and my team is ready to take on the challenge in Colorado!”

KDDP Continued: Brett Yackey is also looking forward to this weekend’s action. After a less than stellar debut with the series at Tucson Speedway (AZ), Yackey is confident they will run well this weekend.

“We made our SRL debut in Tucson, and I’m not sure we could have been any worse”, Yackey recalled. “With that being said, I think we will be a good competitor at CNS. Our team and cars have come a long way since that trip to Tucson, and I’m really looking forward to racing with some of the best in the country.”

Hot, Hot, Hot: Kole Raz had been looking for his first big Super Late Model victory for multiple seasons. The 2021 SRL Rookie-of-the-Year runner-up has knocked on the door of Victory Lane multiple times, with a half-dozen runner-up finishes. But last August he scored a “South Sound 200” win. His last three starts have yielded wins in the “Summer Showdown 150” at Evergreen Speedway (WA), a “Mark Galloway 75” win at Evergreen and a “Wenatchee 200” victory at the Wenatchee Valley Super-Oval (WA). A $10,000 win in the “Salted Metals 150” would be the icing on the cake.

“It would be huge to finally end up in the Winner’s Circle with Spears SRL Southwest Tour”, Raz exclaimed! “We have been trying at it for so long, and I have had chances to get there, we just haven’t been able to complete it yet. It would be an incredible feeling for our group of guys to get it done.”

Raz continued, “I’ve only been to Colorado once as a spectator in 2015, while my brother was running the K&N Series at the time. Everything I’ve watched and have heard about CNS has been positive. It seems to be a great facility that provides the opportunity for us racers to put on a great showing for the fans. They have a lot of local talent there, and then alongside that, you have a great group of touring teams that will be tough to beat.”

Parity: 13 regular teams from the Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series will compete against 16 Super Late Model teams from Colorado National Speedway. Both groups will be well represented this weekend.

Broadcast: The “Salted Metals 150” will be shown “LIVE” on Spears Racing.TV with a subscription. It will be shown on a delayed basis on MAVTV.

Schedule: The SRL will be joined by the local Super Stocks, Figure 8’s, and Grand American Modifieds. Qualifying is scheduled from 5:20 PM to 6:20 PM CST. Opening Ceremonies are set for 6:25 PM with Dashes for the local divisions at 6:30 PM. Intermission is scheduled for 7:30 PM with a Drifter Demo. Feature events are scheduled to begin at 7:40 PM for the Super Stocks (25 laps), Figure 8’s (20 laps), Grand American Modifieds (30 laps), at Spears SRL Southwest Tour Series (150 laps).

NASCAR at Dover: How to Watch, Stream, Preview, Picks for the Wurth 400

Nascar gets set for 400 punishing laps around the monster mile.

gettyimages-1486914322.jpg

The mile-long Dover Motor Speedway, for its size, is one of NASCAR's most imposing tracks: With high banks in both the corners and on the straightaways of this concrete facility, Dover has become notorious for being a physically taxing, punishing racetrack that has more than earned its nickname: The Monster Mile.

Coming off a wild finish at Talladega that saw a jailbreak to the checkered flag and carnage across the finish line, the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Dover for the Wurth 400 and more potential for viciousness around every corner. It takes a particular mix of skill and nerve to be successful at Dover, as defending winner Martin Truex Jr. has been with four wins in his career, and to tame Miles the Monster -- A fearsome, concrete beast with a strong appetite for sheet metal.

How to Watch the NASCAR Cup Series at Dover

Date: Sun., Apr. 28 Location: Dover Motor Speedway -- Dover, Del. Time: 2 p.m. ET TV: FS1 Stream: fubo ( try for free )

What to Watch

This weekend marks the Cup Series debut of Corey Heim, who has been tabbed as the substitute driver for Legacy Motor Club after Erik Jones suffered a compression fracture in his vetrebra in a crash last weekend at Talladega. Heim, who has become a championship contender in the Craftsman Truck Series while also impressing in limited Xfinity Series action, will take the next step in his ascent through Toyota's development system when he climbs aboard the No. 43. And it's far from out of the question that he could end up making some noise come Sunday.

There is a natural temptation to compare the circumstances of Heim with the Cup Series debut of Matt Kenseth way back in the fall of 1998. Following the death of Bill Elliott's father, Elliott skipped that weekend's race in Dover and opted to put Kenseth, then a rising star in the NASCAR Busch Series, in the No. 94 Ford in his place. Kenseth was outstanding, starting 16th before driving up into the top 10 and contending for a top five late in the race before finishing sixth -- Foreshadowing what became a NASCAR Hall of Fame career.

Corey Heim making his Cup debut at Dover subbing for Erik Jones has some shades of Matt Kenseth. Kenseth made his Cup debut at Dover in 1998 subbing for Bill Elliott, who skipped the race after the death of his father. Kenseth would impress everyone by finishing 6th. pic.twitter.com/5J8cUO6opb — Steven Taranto (@STaranto92) April 24, 2024

That may not be an entirely fair comparison, but the 21-year-old Heim's talent is very highly regarded, as evidenced by him being hired prior to the 2024 season as the top reserve driver for both Legacy Motor Club and 23XI Racing. What will work to the Marietta, Ga. driver's advantage is that he'll have some extra track time this weekend, as he is entered in Saturday's Xfinity Series race behind the wheel of the No. 26 Toyota for Sam Hunt Racing.

With Heim on track to earn a Cup Series ride in the next few years, this weekend should be a good litmus test of how prepared Heim is for the top level and how much pressure he can handle. After all, there's very few drivers who can say they made their first Cup start ever driving Richard Petty's No. 43 adorned in a throwback paint scheme.

News of the Week

  • NASCAR has announced the format for the 2024 All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway, introducing a new element of tire strategy for this year's race. Three different tire compounds will be brought to North Wilkesboro including a "prime tire", the baseline tire tested in March, and an "option tire" made of a softer material with more grip but faster wear. The option tire will be made from the same material as Goodyear's wet weather tires, which will also be on hand in the event the track is wet. Teams who qualify for the All-Star Race will have two sets of the prime and option tires available, and all will have to start the 200-lap race on the option tire. There will be two scheduled cautions at lap 100 and lap 150, at which point teams must perform a four-tire pit stop using any tire of their choosing. Drivers eligible for the All-Star Race include those who have won a race in either 2023 or 2024 as well as full-time drivers who have won either a past All-Star Race or a Cup Series championship.
  • NASCAR has announced the nominees for the NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2025, a group that includes several new additions. Greg Biffle, a winning Cup driver and champion of the Xfinity and Craftsman Truck Series, has been added to the modern era ballot alongside legendary engine builder Randy Dorton and three-time Truck Series champion Jack Sprague. "Mr. Modified" Ray Hendrick and three-time Convertible Division champion Bob Welborn have been added to the pioneer ballot, and Dr. Dean Sickling -- the inventor of the SAFER barrier -- has been nominated for the landmark award. The complete modern era ballot includes Biffle, Dorton, Sprague, Neil Bonnett, Tim Brewer, Jeff Burton, Carl Edwards, Harry Gant, Harry Hyde and Ricky Rudd. The pioneer ballot includes Hendrick, Welborn, Banjo Matthews, Ralph Mood, and Larry Phillips, and the landmark award nominees are Dr. Sickling, Alvin Hawkins, Lesa France Kennedy, Dr. Joseph Mattioli and Les Richter.
  • NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Joey Gase has lost an appeal of his $5,000 fine for throwing his rear bumper at Dawson Cram following a crash at Richmond, with the National Motorsports Appeals Panel ruling that NASCAR was correct in fining Gase on safety grounds for putting himself in a "dangerous position". Gase has now autographed the bumper and put it up for auction on eBay .

Pick to Win

Ross Chastain (+750) – Past precedent predicting future success is my basis for picking Ross Chastain to win this weekend. In his last two starts at Dover, he led 86 laps and finished third in 2022, and then followed it up by leading 98 laps and finishing second a year ago.

If you believe in patterns, that's trending towards even more laps led and a win for Chastain this week. And speaking of trends, he's also had a few shots already to win in 2024, including just two weeks ago at Texas when he raced Chase Elliott for the victory only to get turned on the final lap.

Southwest is considering implementing assigned seats, report says

Southwest Airlines has focused on keeping its seating simple and flyer-friendly for years,...

(Gray News) – Flyers always expect seating to be first come, first serve on Southwest Airlines, but the company is considering making major changes to its seating arrangements.

Southwest Airlines CEO Bob Jordan told CNBC in an interview Thursday that the company is looking into “new initiatives,” including changes to seating and boarding.

Southwest has focused on keeping its seating simple and flyer-friendly for years, with a single-class cabin and no assigned seats. However, the airline does offer early boarding for a fee so flyers can secure their preferred seats.

To drive revenue, most other major airlines charge travelers to choose seats in advance, profiting off extra fees for window seats and other desirable spots.

Jordan told CNBC that no final decisions have been made for any changes to Southwest’s policy.

Even if seating arrangements change, Southwest flyers can rest assured that another popular airline perk won’t be going anywhere – free checked bags.

Southwest’s Chief Commercial Officer confirmed to CNBC that the airline will not consider charging for checked bags because “people choose Southwest Airlines because we don’t have bag fees.”

hidb-hdtv-antenna.jpg

You can also watch today's race on TV with an affordable indoor antenna, which pulls in local over-the-air HDTV channels such as CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, PBS, Univision and more. Here's the kicker: There's no monthly charge.

For anyone living in a partially blocked-off area (those near mountains or first-floor apartments), a  digital TV antenna  may not pick up a good signal -- or any signal at all. But for many homes, a digital TV antenna provides a seriously inexpensive way to watch NASCAR without paying a cable company. Indoor TV antennas can also provide some much-needed TV backup if a storm knocks out your cable.

This amplified digital antenna with a 50-mile range can receive hundreds of HDTV channels, including ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, Fox and Univision and can filter out cellular and FM signals. It delivers a high-quality picture in 1080p HDTV and top-tier sound.
