Welcome to Australia & New Zealand

The lands "down under" provide a true symphony of wonders that blend the prehistoric landscapes and wondrously weird wildlife of Australia with the staggering scenery and rich Maori traditions of New Zealand.  Discover all that these regions have to show us... strange egg-laying mammals and endearing marsupials... cosmopolitan coastal cities and tropical rainforests... glacier-hewn fjords and dramatic canyons best explored by jet-boat.

Queenstown, new zealand, an invitation to outdoor adventure in queenstown on new zealand's lush south island.

Queenstown, set amidst gorgeous landscapes on New Zealand's South Island, is a resort city known for its many opportunities for for outdoor adventure… from jet boat excursions racing through rapids on the Shotover River, to helicopter rides to the top of Bob's Peak, riding the Skyline gondola, watersports on Lake Wakatipu and much more.

Uluru (Ayers Rock) in the Outback

Aboriginal traditions and a natural wonder at uluru (ayers rock) in australia's "red centre".

Uluru (also known as Ayers Rock) is a massive red sandstone monolith rising dramatically out of the desert Outback (or "Red Centre") in Australia's Northern Territory, and is one of the country's most recognizable features and popular attractions. Sacred to the Pitjantjatjara Anangu, the local Aboriginal people of the region, Uluru is geologically classified as an inselberg (an "island mountain"); a UNESCO World Heritage Site and part of Australia's Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, it's a natural wonder that will take your breath away…

Sydney Harbour and Sydney Opera House

Iconic sights on sydney harbour.

With its iconic skyline comprising some of the 20th century's most innovative architecture, Australia's Sydney Harbour is perhaps the most recognizable urban waterfront on Earth. Two of the Harbour's most remarkable "residents" include the striking Sydney Harbour Bridge – the world's tallest steel arch bridge, opened in 1932 and dubbed "The Coathanger" by locals due to its shape – and the Sydney Opera House, one of the world's most distinctive buildings since its completion in 1973 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Fiordland National Park, New Zealand

The breaktaking beauty of new zealand's fiordland national park.

Whether you explore it by land or by sea, it's hard to beat the breathtaking scenery of Fiordland National Park, the largest of New Zealand's 14 national parks, comprising the South Island's southwestern corner and covered in part by the Southern Alps. The national park is dominated by mountain peaks and many deep, glacier-carved fiords, the largest and most famous of which is Milford Sound; cruising its glacier-hewn inlets and sheer cliffs is a truly memorable experience.

Art Deco Napier, New Zealand

Architectural treasures out of a natural disaster... napier, new zealand.

The city of Napier, on the North Island's Hawke's Bay, is one of New Zealand's most unique cities, due in part to a natural disaster. Virtually destroyed by an earthquake in 1931, the city – despite the deprivations of the Great Depression – was rebuilt in just two years... leaving it with a wealth of Art-Deco architecture, much of it surviving to this day, that's unsurpassed anywhere in the world.

Tasmania, Australia

A small island just off the coast of Australia, Tasmania is a worthwhile stop on any guided tour of the area. Its two major cities, Hobart and Launceston, have direct flights from Australia, and a ferry (the Spirit of Tasmania) leaves from Melbourne and docks at Devonport.

Upon arriving, travelers will find that an island of just 500,000 people has made a name for itself with wineries, iconic hiking trails to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and conservation efforts.

Exploring Hobart will take travelers down colonial-era sandstone streets. A stop at the underground Museum of Old and New Art is typical of guided tours here. Cradle Mountain is a popular hiking destination, as the entire island can be overlooked from the top.

Those looking to relax on the beach will find it easy to do so on the sands of Wineglass Bay. Kangaroos wander freely in this area.

Meanwhile, the famous Tasmanian Devils make their home at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, where they are avidly protected but can also be fed under supervision from tour guides or park officials.

Stewart Island, New Zealand

Stewart Island is just 30 kilometers south of New Zealand. Here, travelers will see brown kiwi, little blue penguins, and yellow-eyed penguins living predator-free under the close watch of the small population of Stewart Islanders that also make their home on the island.

Those looking to hike may do so in Rakiura National Park, known for its multi-day hiking trails spanning the entire island. The most famous of these trails are the Rakiura Track and New Zealand's Great Walks, which can be arranged with tour guides who understand park regulations and directions.

Travelers will likely be treated to a show in the sky at night as the spectacular Aurora Australis plays overhead.

Countries Worth Visiting Near Australia and New Zealand

While Australia and New Zealand are large islands, that does not mean they are without neighbors. Since they are so close together, they share the same maritime borders with the Solomon Islands and that of Papua New Guinea , along with New Caledonia, East Timor, and Indonesia .

Your tour operators may be able to extend your Australia and New Zealand tours since you can easily book flights to these regions and visit them during the same vacation.

Australian and New Zealand Culture: Similarities and Differences

Australia and New Zealand share a rich culture shaped by indigenous traditions and Western influences. Australia's blend of Western and Aboriginal cultures (including the Torres Strait Islander peoples) has resulted in diverse national holidays, promoting equality and inclusion for international travelers.

Australians, known for their practical attire, blend local influences with modern leisure lifestyles, embracing loose-fitting garments ideal for beach or city wear. English is the official language used with British spelling.

Similarly, New Zealand embraces Western influences but English isn't the only official language here. Maori and New Zealand Sign Language are also officially recognized, fostering bilingualism and cultural diversity.

Known affectionately as "Kiwi," locals exude hospitality and community spirit similar to Australia. They strongly emphasize conservation efforts — the defacing of natural property is intolerable, particularly in certain tribal regions of the country.

Along the same lines, different customs of greeting and gift-giving apply to each tribe in New Zealand. Travelers are encouraged to talk not only with their tour guide about what is expected but also with locals, as they are usually pleased to help.

Food in Australia and New Zealand

The rich cultural history of Australia and New Zealand has led to a wide variety of food that travelers can sample while visiting.

Australia's Culinary Delights

Australia is known for different kinds of biscuits and sweet treats, all of which can be enjoyed on the go and were made in the first place for that very reason by workers and soldiers.

Travelers may also sample lamb, kangaroo, and emu, as both are available for consumption on pizza, steaks, or burgers. Meat pies are another common way to consume animal products.

Given the vast oceans surrounding Australia, it is no surprise that seafood such as John Dory, Barramundi, and Balmanian Bugs can all be enjoyed at most restaurants. For more adventurous travelers, Witchetty grubs (served raw) are an excellent source of protein.

 Gastronomic Scene in New Zealand

Kiwis rely heavily on seafood and other proteins. Cooked in an underground oven so the meat and vegetables steam and cook, hāngi is a dish served on special occasions that may be arranged through tour guides.

Travelers will also find soft-shelled tuatua (clams) and green-lipped mussels to eat, along with various forms of lamb and sausages. Mince pies are not uncommon (similar to Australia), but travelers can also eat steamed kumara potatoes that may be peeled and eaten on the go.

For desserts, pavlova is an airy, fruit dessert that Australia also claims to be its own. No matter which country created it, it still tastes good!

Outdoor Travel in Australia and New Zealand

While Australia is much larger than New Zealand, both countries have many daily internal flights between major cities. Travelers can explore the coastal shores of both countries by foot or car.

Australian Outback

Venture into the vast Australian Outback to experience its rugged beauty, ancient landscapes, and rich indigenous culture. Highlights include Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Kings Canyon, and the iconic Red Centre.

Travelers can drive along National Highway A87 or fly into Alice Springs and Uluru airports to reach the Outback. Given the sheer size of the Outback and its remoteness, it's advisable not to venture into it alone and join a guided tour for a safe and enjoyable experience in this region.

Fraser Island, Australia

As the world's largest sand island, Fraser Island is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its diverse ecosystems, crystal-clear lakes, and pristine beaches. Travelers can explore the island's natural attractions, including Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, and the Maheno Shipwreck.

Spanning over 20,000 square kilometers in Australia's Northern Territory, Kakadu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its diverse landscapes, ancient rock art, and abundant wildlife. Travelers can explore the park's wetlands, waterfalls, and escarpments on guided tours and hiking trails.

Blue Mountains, Australia

Just a short drive from Sydney, the Blue Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage-listed region known for their stunning landscapes, ancient rock formations, and lush eucalyptus forests. Popular activities include bushwalking, rock climbing, and exploring scenic lookouts.

Fiordland National Park, New Zealand

Renowned for its breathtaking fjords, towering peaks, and cascading waterfalls, Fiordland National Park offers endless opportunities for hiking, kayaking, and wildlife spotting. Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound are iconic destinations within the park, providing unforgettable experiences amidst pristine natural beauty.

The Remarkables, New Zealand

Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand

Abel Tasman National Park is situated on the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island. It is renowned for its golden beaches, turquoise waters, and coastal hiking trails. Visitors can kayak along the pristine coastline, hike through native forests, and relax on secluded beaches.

Rotorua, New Zealand

Known for its geothermal wonders and Maori culture, Rotorua offers a unique outdoor experience with bubbling mud pools, steaming geysers, and natural hot springs. Visitors can also enjoy mountain biking, ziplining, and hiking in Redwood Forest.

Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand

In Westland Tai Poutini National Park on New Zealand's South Island, Franz Josef Glacier is a magnificent natural wonder that offers thrilling outdoor adventures. Visitors can embark on guided glacier hikes, heli-hiking tours, and scenic helicopter flights to witness the glacier's icy blue crevasses and towering ice formations up close.

The surrounding rainforest and rugged alpine landscapes provide additional opportunities for hiking, photography, and wildlife viewing, making Franz Josef Glacier a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts in New Zealand.

Wildlife in Australia and New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand boast some of the most diverse and unique wildlife encounters in the world, offering travelers the chance to get up close and personal with fascinating creatures.

In Australia, iconic species like koalas, emus, and kangaroos roam the vast landscapes, showcasing the country's rich biodiversity. With over 45 species of kangaroos and wallabies and 144 species of marsupials , the opportunities for wildlife spotting are endless.

Meanwhile, in New Zealand, travelers can encounter the beloved native bird, the kiwi, known for its longevity. They can live 25-50 years and are protected mainly on the island, making it possible for travelers to see them while touring.

Open spaces and lovely places

When traveling in New Zealand, it’s the rugged natural beauty that stands out: spectacular glaciers, picturesque fiords, endless coastlines, steamy geothermal activity and so much more. Its breathtaking landscapes combined with its unique Maori culture, friendly cosmopolitan cities and fabulous food and wine comprise the two remarkable islands the “Kiwis” lovingly call home. New Zealand, a haven for those seeking peace, rejuvenation and relaxation, also offers a veritable playground for the adventurous. The temperate climate makes it ideal for year-round New Zealand adventures.

Destination Must-See's

New Zealand ms1

Queenstown:

Queenstown is a resort town on New Zealand’s South Island. The city is built around an inlet called Queenstown Bay on Lake Wakatipu and has spectacular views of nearby mountains and the Southern Alps. The town’s economy is focused on tourism, especially adventure and ski tourism, boasting over 200 adventure tourism activities to take part in.

New Zealand ms2

It is the highest mountain in New Zealand at a staggering 12,218 feet in height. It lies in the Southern Alps, and is a part of Aoraki/Mt. Cook National Park. Mt. Cook is popular with mountain climbers who are looking for a challenge and is a popular destination for nature-lovers and casual hikers as well.

New Zealand ms3

This city lies on the North Island of New Zealand and is the largest and most populous area in the country. Roughly one third of New Zealand’s population resides here, dating back to the year 1350 when the Maori people populated the land that is known for being rich and fertile. It is now filled with parks, nature, and volcanic fields as well as home to a rich culture and a good quality of living.

New Zealand ms4

This coastal city is located in the Otago region and one of the Southern Hemisphere’s best-preserved Victorian and Edwardian cities. The urban area of Dunedin lies on the central-eastern coast of Otago, surrounded by the head of Otago harbor. Dunedin is known as the Edinburgh of the south because of its Scottish heritage.

Destination Must-Do's

Milford Sound 23

Milford Sound:

Home to rugged landscapes and all-natural beauty, Milford Sound is described by some as the Eighth Wonder of the World. This breathtaking region is situated on the west coast of the South Island and features towering peaks, cascading waterfalls, and surreal views to all who visit. Among the surrounding peaks, travelers will witness “The Elephant,” resembling an elephant’s head, at 4,977 feet tall; and “The Lion,” resembling a crouching lion, at 4,272 feet tall.

New Zealand md2

TranzAlpine Train:

All aboard the TranzAlpine Train as it travels from Auckland to Greymouth on New Zealand’s west coast. It is said to be one of the most scenic train rides in the world. The journey runs once a day with an approximate travel time of 4 1/2 hours. This region is known as glacier country and features many natural treasures including glaciers, beaches, wetlands, lakes, mountains and forests of national parks.

Bay Islands CoOp 23

Bay of Islands:

As a subtropical micro-region, known for both stunning scenery and deep rooted history, the Bay of Islands has a lot to offer travelers. In the past, these waters were once full of ship deserters, sailors, whalers, ex-convicts, and other rogues – but now the Bay of Islands is a tranquil vacation destination. Among the 144 islands that dot the warm South Pacific Bay is the famous “Hole in the Rock.” Etched over time by wind in waves, the “hole” is large enough to travel through by boat when the tide is just right.

New Zealand md4

Visit this town in the Southland region, located on the eastern shore of Lake Te Anau, the largest lake on the South Island. The town borders on the Fiordland National Park, and is home to many species of bird life. It is the perfect place for a hike or bird watching excursion.

Expert Advice

diana

You must try world-renowned New Zealand lamb. Tasty lamb dishes are found on nearly every menu, and what better accompaniment than a glass of the country’s celebrated wine – Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, or Pinot Noir.

New Zealande2

Be sure to keep an eye out for products made from jade, the gorgeous "greenstone.” The stone is important to the Maori who call it 'pounamu.' Maori jade carvings each have their own meaning to the people and make beautiful pendants.

New Zealande3

You should probably know that Kiwis are obsessed with Rugby. They don’t just like it, they are crazy about it! Their national team is the All Blacks and you can find their gear for sale almost everywhere. So you may want to pick up a hat or t-shirt and become an honorary fan.

Fresh out of a pandemic, Australia’s 2023 touring calendar was one of the busiest in recent memory, as artists of all stripes took centrestage everywhere from stadium shows to intimate local gigs. With a starry schedule that included the likes of Post Malone , Red Hot Chili Peppers , and Mötley Crüe , it’ll be tricky for 2024’s schedule to outdo its predecessor – and yet, thanks to the likes of Taylor Swift , Blink-182 and Pink , plus Coldplay, Pearl Jam and SZA, it’s poised to do just that.

From debut headline shows for breakout artists to bustling festival sideshow programs, there’s something for everyone to enjoy as a stellar batch of musicians make their way Down Under in 2024. Read on for NME’s roundup of all the biggest concerts and tours coming to Australia this year.

  • Depeche Mode

Aussie Depeche Mode fans are an incredibly patient bunch. The last time the British synth-pop titans toured the country was in 1994, meaning nearly three decades have passed since they last paid us a visit. But good things come to those who wait, and it seems there is a glimmer of hope for those hoping to catch the band Down Under.

  • READ MORE: Depeche Mode: every single album ranked and rated

In March 2023, Depeche Mode’s Dave Gahan told an Italian blog that the band were eyeing “as-yet-unannounced dates in Asia and Australia” as part of a touring run that would lead into 2024. The band have toured the world in support of their latest album, ‘Memento Mori’ , and a trip to Australia to cap off the jaunt seems more likely than ever.

Highlights of New Zealand

Our G Adventures tour in New Zealand (“Highlights of New Zealand”) was super - the itinerary, accommodations, the guide, the number of places we were able to visit, the NZ folks we met (warm, helpful, kind, happy people) and we hope to come back to NZ to do more exploring! The tour was a small group of 15 with 1 guide, and it was a great group with just the right number of participants. We felt the prices were very reasonable and we were WELL taken care of by GAdventures. We will definitely look to this tour company for future trips.

Although Rod, the driver was very nice I felt that Intrepid had not organised the tour as well as previous Intrepid tours I have done. It was very overpriced for what was provided. The van had a broken seat belt attachment with a sharp edge which ruined a down jacket I had bought for the trip. I have asked Intrepid about it but received no reply.

Himanshu the representative was very Cooperative and answered all our queries. Though the group was maximum to 15 people there were some trips where we were around 50 people in the trip. We had paid for a private trip where maximum size was 15 people and hence that was disappointing. Overall the trip was good.

This was a great tour! The guides (Lauren and Jonathan) were very accommodating with the different fitness levels of the guests and weather conditions. I loved that the guides cooked some of the meals which allowed us the freedom to relax and share wine and experiences. The hikes were excellent and liked the other activities. Sandboarding, cave tubing and mountain biking were a must do. This tour hit all the great places on the North Island. Highly recommend!

Southern Highlights - 9 Day Self Drive Tour

After a "misstep" by your team in the beginning, canceling my trip the very next day after confirmation, Jules appeared to go significantly above the routine and made sure EVERYTHING else went PERFECT. She spent alot of phone time with me. Every place we went had the reservation, ticket, tour, seats ready and instantly available. She booked a few extras I did not request that were very enjoyable. I was able to easily book some things advertised we thought would be too crowded over the Christmas break making the whole trip the best one ever. THANK YOU JULES- and Marianna as well.

Reviews of Small Group tours to New Zealand

The tour guide was exceptional! The accommodations could have been better.
One of the best experiences of my life, made possible by the incredibly talented and charismatic Daisy! This was well organized with all of the logistics taken care of for you while having the freedom to pick what activities interest you most. The group setting was fun and a nice bonding expensive of people from around the world. Some of the hostel stays were great, some were just ok, but all were clean and had the essentials.

The Weeknd

The Weeknd’s postponed tour of Australia is now canceled and ticket owners will be refunded.

The Canadian R&B superstar had initially scheduled an 11-date stadium tour of Australia and New Zealand, winding its way across both countries last November and December.

“The Weeknd ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ for Australia & New Zealand is still in process of being rescheduled,” reads a statement from LN, seen by Billboard . “Whilst we continue to work through the rescheduling process with the artist, tickets for the existing 2023 tour will be cancelled with all ticket holders receiving a full refund accordingly.”

Ticket holders of the The Weeknd’s ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ shows who previously held on to their tickets will be able to access a priority purchase window for the new tour in Australia and New Zealand when announced, the message reads, linking to a priority waitlist . All current ticket holders will receive an automatic refund.

The tour was originally announced last August with just four shows, visiting each of Australia’s big three east coast cities — Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane — and including a single date in Auckland, NZ.

Additional dates were added last September , boosting the itinerary to 11 across both markets.

The Weeknd’s tour is scrapped as Australia’s festivals market navigates turbulent waters. In recent weeks, the 2024 editions of Splendour in the Grass, Mona Foma, and Groovin The Moo, with soft ticket sales playing a part in each story.

The inaugural Soundcheck report, published by Creative Australia, found the climate for operating a festival was a “highly complex” one, with event organizers challenged with myriad issues, from rapidly increasing costs, changing ticket buying behavior and more.

In the U.S., he has landed seven No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 and four No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200.

On Australia’s ARIA Albums Chart, published last Friday, April 19 , the Weeknd’s hits collection The Highlights lifts 8-4 in its 167th week on the tally. It’s triple-platinum certified in Australia.

Tesla Cybertruck lands in Sydney, set to tour Australia and New Zealand

Tesla Cybertruck lands in Sydney, set to tour Australia and New Zealand

The Tesla Cybertruck – the electric-powered, stainless-steel bodied, triangular-shaped pick-up – has arrived in Australia and is on display at Tesla’s Sydney showroom ahead of a national tour.

A left-hand-drive vehicle was sent to Australia in a shipping container, so the vehicle could remain under wraps until the electric vehicle specialist was ready to lift the lid.

News of the Tesla Cybertruck’s arrival broke on morning radio earlier today and was quickly spotted touring iconic Sydney locations – including Bondi Beach – throughout the rest of the day.

Photos uploaded to social media show the vehicle was wearing Queensland trade plates so it could be driven on local roads with a special permit.

By the time EFTM caught up with the Tesla Cybertruck, it was tucked in for the night at the Tesla showroom in Alexandria (near Sydney Airport) parked alongside two Tesla Model 3 sedans and one Tesla Model Y.

Despite the promotional tour, Tesla is believed to be no closer to introducing the Cybertruck in Australia as it is planned for left-hand-drive only for now.

Tesla Australia’s website did originally accept Cybertruck orders when the vehicle was unveiled four years ago, but the order portal was shut down locally about two years ago once it became apparent to Tesla a right-hand-drive model would be financially unviable for such a small market.

Tesla representatives say the Cybertruck is due to visit other Tesla showrooms – and other iconic Australian locations – before a tour of New Zealand.

Industry analysts say Tesla could be testing customer reaction to the vehicle and reconsidering a right-hand-drive program – or simply using the Cybertruck to drum-up some interest in the other models in its showrooms.

Tesla Australia slashed prices of the Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV by between $1000 and $8500 earlier this month.

The Tesla Model Y is currently the cheapest it has ever been locally, now starting from $60,900 before on road costs (about $66,000 drive-away in NSW), and the Tesla Model 3 now starts from $58,900 (about $64,000 drive-away in NSW).

Jim Jefferies Sets ‘Give ‘Em What They Want’ Tour of Australia

Jim Jefferies Sets ‘Give ‘Em What

Jim Jefferies is heading out for a homecoming arena tour.

The rock star Australian comedian and TV personality sets his national “‘Em What They Want Tour for August,” produced through concerts specialist Frontier Touring and presented by Triple M and Channel 7.

Jefferies will bring his latest stage show to a mix of metro and regional spots, scheduled to kick off Aug. 2 at Perth’s HBF Stadium.

The tour then works its way east, visiting venues in Adelaide, Hobart, Melbourne, Newcastle, Wollongong, Sydney, Canberra, Brisbane and wrapping up Sunday, Aug. 18 at Townsville Entertainment & Convention Centre.

The Sydney-born, Perth-raised funnyman last toured these parts in 2022 for 27 sold-out shows across Australia and New Zealand.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Frontier Touring (@frontiertouring)

With his freewheeling use of profanity (and a predilection for the C-word) and sharp political satire, Jefferies’ career blew up when his “gun control” sketch went viral on YouTube.

Today, he’s one of the most in-demand comedians on the planet, in a growing space for stand-up, playing world’s biggest rooms, including Madison Square Garden and London’s The O2, and having them laugh in the aisles at Edinburgh Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Reading and Leeds, and Glastonbury.

He’s seamlessly made his move onto the small screen with nine Netflix specials; “The Jim Jefferies Show,” which ran for three seasons from 2017 to 2019; and the hit homegrown game show “The 1% Club”, which nabbed a total national audience of 1,520,000 for Channel 7 in February 2024.

Tickets for “Give ‘Em What They Want” go on sale Friday, May 3 via frontiertouring.com/jimjefferies .
