Old Town Trip 10 Deluxe Angler

rated 4.5 of 5 stars

Excellent low-cost recreational kayak. This kayak is really nice for flat water and slow moving rivers.

  • Large cockpit
  • Very stable
  • Good cargo capacity
  • Priced reasonable for the quality
  • Fun to boat in
  • Seat is hard on the behind for long trips
  • Foot pegs could be bigger

My wife and I are are new to kayaking and these were our first purchases. So far we have taken ours out on 16 trips in the past two months ranging from 90 min to our longest trip of 8 hours on the water, 2 miles to 14.88 miles. We have paddled in no wind to as high as about 15mph. It tracks reasonable straight and maneuvers pretty well. We kayak on flat water and slow moving rivers.

The kayak has a built-in cup holder on the front of the cockpit that you have to stretch to reach and one in the seat. Both hold cans and water bottles well. It has a paddle rest on the rim of the kayak and a tie down for securing while resting.

It has a sealed rear bulk head with a dry hatch. The dry hatch cover is okay. I like it better than a gasket only one, but still is not as nice as some others. The plastic handles at each end are solid and make it easy to carry and tie down on the roof of your vehicle. It has buoyant material in the bow to keep the bow high on the water.

The foot pegs are easy to adjust and work (could be bigger). The knee pads on the sides are reasonable. The seat is okay but hard on the behind for long trips without adding additional padding. There is room behind the seat to store a soft 12-can cooler.

It has tie downs on the bow, wish it had one on the stern behind the seat too. I am not a fisherman, but it does have some trolling mounts and an anchor system I have never used, plus a cleat on the right side. The kayak is made with good materials and feels solid and well made. I imagine it will hold up for many years with normal care and use.

Overall I love this is as a starting kayak and do not regret buying it. What drew me to it was all the extras, large cock pit and the stability. If I knew then what I know now and how much I was going to love kayaking I probably would have gone the extra $300 to $400 per kayak and purchased a Wilderness Pungo 100 or 120 .

We paid $437 at Dicks with sales and discounts. We have ordered a Wilderness Systems Pungo 140 which fits our kayaking plans and style. Kayaking is expensive after you buy your boat, a decent paddle, and a PFD. Not to mention the costs associated with crossbars and racks.

This is a solid kayak for beginners and casual kayakers looking to have a good time enjoying the water. It is worth every penny and I would not hesitate to recommend it. If you plan on spending a lot of time in the water in it and have the money then I recommend spending the extra money on the Wilderness Systems Pungo line.

Best for lakes and slow rivers, for anyone wanting a easy little boat with plenty of room for gear.

  • Easy to maneuver
  • Lots of room for gear
  • Seat needs more padding.

Been out in this 10-foot sit-in kayak for several trips this spring including a short camping trip upriver.

This one has plenty of room for gear including a dry hatch in back with a lockable rubber top that holds a small flexible cooler, a duffle bag, and room for more stuff crammed in the crannies. There's room behind the seat for a sleeping bag, room between your feet for more gear, and a installed criss-cross bungee kit on front of the kayak that can hold two chairs in bags. It has a couple of hooks and smaller little bungees around the cockpit to attach handy things like camera or phone. It has space for adding more bungees for more storage if needed.

It has a deep cup holder in the built in console, but you need long arms to reach as it is a large cockpit!

The paddle rest is across the cockpit with a bungee and hook to attach it if you're needing your hands for other things or just rest.

I'm a smallish female, 5'6", 140 pounds, and haven't tried to carry it on my own, but it's light enough that carrying up a steep boat landing and placing on the truck, with help, isn't too taxing.

Our kayaking has been in lakes and slow rivers, and this is the second kayak I've owned, the other is a Perception Sport Swifty 9.5, which I also love, but doesn't have the storage space. Maneuvering with the Old Town seems excellent and it tracks well, easily becomes an extension of you and feels effortless after a while.

This kayak isn't super fast, but works to get you where you're going if speed isn't your goal.  Having said that, if you put your mind to it, you can get out in front of the supposedly longer, faster kayaks, with little effort.

The only downside is the seat gets a little hard after a short time, so will plan to do some modifying with that prior to going on a longer trip.

It also comes with an anchor system which I haven't used yet.

Definitely recommend the Old Town Trip kayak for slow rivers and lakes. Have friends, males and females, of all sizes, who always grab this one, too.

The Casual Outdoorsman Reviews the Trip 10 Angler DLX

The Trip Angler 10 Deluxe  is a dual purpose recreational kayak manufactured by Old Town Canoe , an American company headquartered in Old Town, Maine. It is sold exclusively through Dick’s Sporting Goods and their subsidiary Field and Stream at a price of $499.99.

IMG_1372

At First Glance:

The Trip Angler’s design looks like a cross between two other popular Old Town models: The Vapor 10XT  and the Vapor 10 Angler . They took features from each model and combined them to make a multi purpose recreational platform. You get the rod holders, anchor trolly and bow bungees of the Vapor Angler along with the dry storage and rear bulkhead of the XT. It’s also $100 less expensive than the XT and if you catch it on sale, can be had even cheaper.

The Trip is made of single-layer polyethylene and comes with adjustable foot braces, a padded seat with adjustable back rest (forward, backward), padding on the coaming, rod holders, anchor trolley, deck fittings and two molded cup holders.(one on dashboard, one on seat) Hard mold built in carry handles are fore and aft and at 10 feet long and 28.5 inches wide, the Trip weighs in at 49 lbs. with a capacity of 325 lbs.

Three things that immediately stand out about the Trip is the large cockpit opening, the stern hatch and the rear mounted skid plate. The cockpit opening is huge measuring 48 inches long and 19.5 inches wide which not only allows easy entry and exit but also  allows you easy open access to any gear you carry up front. The stern hatch is big too measuring 16.5 by 10.5 inches and is covered by Old Town’s click seal style hatch cover. The skid plate located aft on the bottom is a nice addition that will help keep your hull from getting scratched up.

IMG_1524

On The Water:

IMG_1388

We took the Trip out for a couple of hours and these are our conclusions.

The cockpit is large which not only is easy to enter and exit from but also allows you to carry a lot of gear with you or even a small child or a dog. There was a decent amount of space in the dry storage area and the bulkhead adds floatation. The foot braces though adjustable were not convenient to adjust while out on the water because the latches on them are near your feet requiring you to lean forward toward your ankles to make any adjustments. If you are carrying any gear in front of the seat, it might make it difficult to reach. The seat was comfortable but could use some more padding on the seat pan. It was fine for a few hours but anything longer starts to get uncomfortable. The seat adjustment is conveniently located inside the cockpit on the starboard side and adjusts the backrest with a simple pull of the string.

Very durable and versatile design. The polyethylene hull is touch and should last a very long time and within reason be able to handle hitting the occasional rock or log.  Not only can you fish out of it with space to carry your gear, if you pack light, you could also use this as an “over-nighter” because of the capacity and storage space.

This boat is so stable, we were able to turn completely around in the seat to retrieve things from the rear hatch without issue. In our opinion, this boat would be hard to capsize unless you were trying to.

Tracking on flat water was good, but proper paddling form is a must due to the hull design and length of the boat. In windy conditions, like most 10 foot recreational kayaks, the Trip tends to weather cock. It is not a fast kayak but is very easy to maneuver. It’s a kayak that would be easy for a beginner to quickly get comfortable in.

The paddle holder is molded into the coaming crossways and offers no way to secure it to the boat. The anchor trolley and deck fittings are conveniently located.

  • Very Stable
  • Large capacity for a 10 foot craft (325 lbs.)
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Quality built
  • Dry storage compartment
  • $100 less than the Vapor XT model with more capability
  • Needs a better paddle holder
  • Seat pan needs more padding
  • Weather cocking in windy conditions
  • Foot pegs inconvenient to adjust on water (This is subjective)
  • Weight (49 lbs.)

Conclusion:

This is a very well made and versatile kayak with some great features. For the recreational paddler/ angler who spends their time on flat water and slow moving creeks and rivers, this kayak will give you a lot of capability in a small package. Though it is not a fast boat, it’s stability and maneuverability are excellent which will build your confidence as a paddler quickly.

Fishing Kayak Review: Old Town Vapor 10

Buyer’s Guide | Kayak Angler

T he Old Town Vapor 10 is a compact sit-inside recreational kayak. Those seeking a fishing kayak will be especially interested in the Old Town Vapor 10 Angler, which adds useful features geared to the needs of the kayak angler.

Over 100 years ago, the first Old Town canoe was built along the Penobscot River in Old Town, Maine. More than a century later, some of their oldest boats are still on the water and Old Town has grown to become one of the most storied canoe and kayak makers in America. Whether you paddle recreationally, fish the local farm pond or chase tournament victories, Old Town has a kayak to make your experience unforgettable.

The Old Town Vapor 10 kayak and Vapor 10 Angler are recreational sit-inside styles, which means the cockpit is partially enclosed by the kayak deck. This is a popular style for recreational kayaks as it provides a comfortable and supportive seat and the deck keeps water from splashing into your lap while paddling.

The drawback to a recreational sit-inside kayak—versus a sit-on-top—is that if the kayak tips over or swamps, it will fill with water. Rather than simply climbing back aboard as with a sit-on-top, the paddler will need to swim their kayak to shore and empty the water before continuing on their way.

The Old Town Vapor 10 kayak is intended for use on slow-moving rivers, smaller lakes and other sheltered waterways that are not exposed to strong wind, current or waves. It’s perfect for novice and casual paddlers, families and anglers, and the large cockpit makes it a good choice for those with mobility limitations that can make using a kayak with a more confined cockpit difficult. The spacious cockpit, stable hull and plenty of volume in the bow also make the Vapor 10 ideal for paddling with your pet.

As its name suggests, the Old Town Vapor 10 is 10 feet long, putting it on the shorter end of the recreational kayak spectrum. This makes it relatively lightweight and easy to store and transport. Look to the  Vapor 10 angler and recreational kayaks if you’re seeking comfort, stability and maneuverability for exploring calm waterways, and want a compact and capable kayak that doesn’t break the bank.

If this sounds like you, keep reading for a comprehensive Old Town Vapor 10 review.

Old Town Vapor 10 Specs Length: 10’0” / 3 m Width: 28.5” / 72 cm Cockpit: 48” × 19.5” / 122 × 49.5 cm Weight: 47 lbs / 21 kg Capacity: 325 lbs / 147 kg MSRP: $529 USD / $599 USD (Angler)

Performance

The Old Town Vapor 10 offers new paddlers and kayak anglers reassuring stability thanks to its wide, flat hull and rounded, high-volume sidewalls. These allow the Vapor 10 to tilt from side to side without feeling tippy. Despite the Vapor 10’s compact, 10-foot length, this is a deceptively spacious boat with a weight capacity of 325 pounds, which further adds to its feeling of stability.

The Old Town Vapor 10 features a buoyant, wedge-shaped bow that cuts through waves and wind chop, making for a drier ride. This is paired with a pronounced keel (central ridge that runs down the center of the hull) and built-in skeg (where the keel becomes a deeper fin at the stern of the boat). These features help with tracking, which is a kayak’s ability to maintain a straight course with minimal corrections.

Every aspect of kayak design involves a trade-off of some kind. For example, too much tracking and a kayak becomes hard to turn; too little, and trying to paddle straight becomes a frustrating exercise of weaving and correcting. Fortunately, kayak designers have found many different ways to finesse a kayak’s shape so it remains fun to paddle in a variety of conditions and situations. Another tool designers use is called rocker.

Rocker describes the upward curve of a kayak hull at the bow and stern. Comparing kayaks to fruit, lots of rocker looks something like a banana. The Old Town Vapor 10 has minimal rocker in the bow and a little more in the stern. This assists with maneuverability by allowing the stern to release from the water, giving the Vapor 10 a good balance of efficient tracking and easy turning. It also makes paddling and fishing rivers with small riffles and class I rapids feasible and enjoyable in the Vapor 10.

Market and demographics

The Old Town Vapor 10 and its sibling, the Vapor 10 Angler, are 10-foot recreational and fishing kayaks suitable for use on sheltered waters such as smaller lakes and slow-moving rivers that are not exposed to strong wind, current or waves.

The Old Town Vapor 10 sit-inside kayak is a great fit for novice and casual paddlers, families and anglers, and the large cockpit makes it a good choice for those with mobility limitations that can make using a kayak with a more confined cockpit difficult. The spacious cockpit, stable hull and plenty of volume in the bow also make the Vapor 10 ideal for paddling with your pet.

About the Old Town Vapor 10

Material and construction.

The Old Town Vapor 10 angler and recreational kayaks are constructed of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which is a durable and cost effective plastic for kayak production. The affordability and toughness of this material make it the most popular choice for recreational and fishing kayaks.

Old Town uses both single-layer and triple-layer polyethylene in the construction of their recreational kayaks, with the latter offering the highest durability and resistance to warping, denting or cracking. As you’d expect, three-layer construction commands a higher price, and the budget-friendly Vapor 10 uses a lower cost single-layer build. Even so, many Vapor 10 users report their kayaks are still going strong after more than a decade of heavy use and abuse.

Old Town kayaks are built using a rotomolding process in which small plastic pellets are poured into a mold that is then heated and rotated in an industrial-size oven. This liquifies the plastic pellets and evenly distributes the plastic throughout the mold, resulting in a robust and seamless final product.

Old Town Vapor 10 accessories and outfitting

Both the Old Town Vapor 10 and the Old Town Vapor 10 Angler share the same standard outfitting, with the Angler edition adding a few extras that are especially useful for kayak fishing.

Compared to the Old Town Vapor 10, the Angler edition adds two flush mounted 10 rod holders. The rod holders provide ready storage of two setups, so you can be rigged and ready to cast. The Vapor 10 Angler also has deck bungees on the bow for stashing smaller items, and an anchor trolley system.

The cockpit of the Old Town Vapor 10 angler and recreational kayaks focuses on comfort and easy accessibility. At 48 inches long by 19.5 inches wide, it’s easy to enter and exit the Vapor 10, and there’s plenty of space for gear, or even a furry friend, between the paddler’s legs. The elongated cockpit also lets you raise your knees if that position feels more comfortable, and provides room to reach for items you’ve stored inside the bow.

The cockpit rim of the Old Town Vapor 10 features a recessed tray and cup holder. This tray is handy for both anglers and casual paddlers, with space to prepare your rig, store tackle or stash snacks. There’s also a built-in paddle holder at the front of the cockpit where you can secure your paddle to leave hands free for taking a photo or making a cast.

If you would like to keep the cockpit of your Old Town Vapor 10 sealed from rain and other elements during storage and transportation, you may want to pick up a cockpit cover. Cockpit covers are made of nylon or neoprene and provide an inexpensive way to keep creepy crawlies out of your kayak when not in use. Check manufacturer sizing before purchasing to ensure the cover fits. One great option is a Seals size 7 nylon cockpit cover .

Inside the cockpit, the Old Town Vapor 10 features sliding adjustable foot braces. These foot braces allow incremental adjustments to find a comfortable foot position. Properly fitted foot braces are critical to ensuring good posture and efficient power transfer through your paddle strokes, reducing fatigue and allowing you to paddle further. Thigh pads along the cockpit rim enable you to brace your knees and thighs inside the kayak to provide additional points of contact, helpful with stability and boat control.

Recent Old Town Vapor 10 kayaks benefit from a seat upgrade that is much more comfortable than seats found in earlier versions of this boat. Old Town’s new Comfort Flex seat offers plenty of padding and a supportive, adjustable backrest to accommodate a wide range of users. The best way to know if the Vapor 10 seat is comfortable for you is to sit in the boat and try it out.

The designers also included a drain plug that makes it straightforward to empty any water that has splashed or dripped into the kayak while paddling. Always check that the drain plug is closed and lightly hand tightened before launching.

Where many recreational sit-inside kayaks have a covered stern hatch for storage, the Old Town Vapor 10 borrows from fishing kayaks with an open rear tankwell. A tankwell is a recessed storage area molded into the deck of the kayak. The Vapor 10 tankwell provides more accessible storage than a closed hatch, but as a fishing kayak this is an outfitting element where a sit-inside kayak’s storage opportunities are limited compared to the wide-open on-deck storage space of a sit-on-top kayak.

Old Town Vapor 10 mods

If you’re looking to further enhance your recreational paddling or fishing experience, consider a couple easy Old Town Vapor 10 upgrades.

For those who would prefer a covered storage area behind the seat, Old Town offers a stern hatch kit that transforms the stern tankwell recess into an enclosed hatch. The hatch kit is installed with rivets, and operates on a hinge.

Users have had mixed reviews about this Old Town Vapor 10 hatch upgrade. The hatch is not watertight, so even with enclosed storage you have to pack your gear in dry bags. As a kayak angler, enclosing the hatch also reduces usable on-deck space for a cooler or other bulky items.

Another modification available directly through Old Town is a folding anchor kit. The Old Town Vapor 10 Angler anchor attaches to the trolley line running around the stern half of the Vapor 10 Angler. Dropping anchor gives you an opportunity to sit still while fishing in mild current or windy conditions.

For both the hatch kit and anchor kit, Old Town provides pop rivets to install the systems to the Vapor 10 and other Old Town kayaks. This may seem like a simpler choice than a screw or bolt fitting, but keep in mind you’ll need a way to install the rivets. Also, this method does not allow for re-tightening if the hardware becomes loose over time.

Kayak anglers seeking a trolling motor are advised to search YouTube for DIY videos from other anglers and Vapor 10 users. In short, anything is possible, but there is no one-and-done kit to motorize your Vapor 10 kayak. Old Town does offer a Minn Kota powered Sportsman fishing kayak that’s ready to go off the shelf, but it’s a major investment at nearly $3,000.

The hull and deck of Old Town kayaks are covered by a limited lifetime warranty. This is a serious step up from the 1- to 5-year warranties you’ll find on many other budget boats found at big box stores.

Child paddling red sit-inside kayak

How it compares

The Old Town Vapor 10 is far from being the only choice for an entry-level recreational or fishing kayak. Nearly every major recreational kayak manufacturer offers a comparable 10-foot sit-inside kayak, and there are a number of other options within the Old Town lineup itself. Here is a look at how the Vapor 10 stacks up against other models.

Old Town Vapor 10 vs Angler

You may have noticed the Old Town Vapor 10 and Old Town Vapor 10 Angler are mentioned interchangeably in this review and other sources online. The Old Town Vapor 10 is the base model from Old Town, while the Angler version adds a few useful accessories for kayak fishing including rod holders and an anchor trolley.

Both the Vapor 10 and Vapor 10 Angler have the exact same hull, so the performance of both kayaks is the same. If kayak fishing is not your priority, then you’ll save $70 on the purchase price of an Old Town Vapor 10 and can choose from brighter color schemes.

Old Town Vapor 10 vs 10xt

The Vapor 10xt is the same kayak as Old Town’s Vapor 10 base model, with a large oval Quick Seal stern hatch rather than the Vapor 10’s open stern tankwell. If you prefer covered dry storage, the upgrade to the Vapor 10xt may be worth the additional $170 price tag. If you’re just as happy with putting your gear in a $20 dry bag and tossing it in the tankwell, save some coin on the basic Vapor 10.

Old Town Vapor 10 vs 12

The Old Town Vapor 12 adds an extra two feet to the waterline of the 10-foot Vapor 10, making the 12-footer a good choice for anglers and recreational paddlers seeking a bit more speed and storage space. All other things being equal, longer equals faster when it comes to kayaks. Because the Vapor 10 and Vapor 12 share the same width and general hull shape, the 12-footer will have better glide and tracking (the tendency to hold a straight course without making corrections).

On the other hand, the Vapor 10 is slightly more maneuverable, lighter (49 lbs versus 56 lbs) and easier to store and transport. It’s also $200 cheaper, so choose the Vapor 10 if ease of transportation or budget are a priority. Choose the Old Town Vapor 12 Angler if you want fishing features in a sleeker, faster kayak; look at the Vapor 12xt if you prefer a dry stern hatch to an open tankwell.

Old Town Vapor 10 vs Trip 10

If you are looking at a side-by-side comparison of the Vapor 10 and Trip 10 and feel they look exactly the same, this is because they are. The Old Town Trip 10 is the same boat as the Vapor 10, produced by Old Town under a different name exclusively for Dick’s Sporting Goods. The only other difference between the kayaks is color scheme.

Old Town Dirigo 106 vs Vapor 10

Another 10-foot recreational sit-inside option from Old Town is the Dirigo 106. The Dirigo 106 is a long-time favorite from Old Town that offers a more premium paddling experience than the budget-priced Vapor 10. Higher end features include three-layer polyethylene construction for even better durability, bow and stern deck rigging for on-deck storage, a deluxe high-back seat, and handy storage hatch built into the front of the cockpit.

Perhaps the most important difference between the Vapor 10 and the Dirigo 106 is the latter has a large stern hatch with a sealed bulkhead for dry storage. In addition to keeping your gear dry and secure, a bulkhead (an interior wall within the kayak hull) ensures positive flotation should the kayak tip over or swamp in deep water. This makes the Dirigo 106 a safer and more suitable choice for exploring more exposed waterways, whereas Vapor 10 users should stick to only the most sheltered waters.

For those who are strictly paddling on calm, near-shore waters, the Vapor 10 is a good, low-cost choice. If you aspire to paddle more types of water—or just like the deluxe features of a more expensive boat—choose the more versatile Dirigo 106.

Ascend FS10 vs Old Town Vapor 10

The Ascend FS10 is another sit-inside fishing kayak intended for use on calm waters. The Old Town Vapor 10 and the Ascend FS10 are very similar boats in overall concept. The stern tankwell on the FS10 is larger, which is a bonus for kayak angling.

One drawback to the Ascend line is availability. Ascend is only available at Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s, while Old Town is carried by many paddlesports and general outdoor retailers across North America. Ascend is also a newer brand with limited variety of designs, whereas Old Town has a proven track record of manufacturing quality canoes and kayaks going back over a century.

Perception Sound 10.5 vs Old Town Vapor

Perception is another venerable kayak brand known for decades as a leader in paddlesports. The Perception Sound 10.5  is a sit-inside fishing kayak similar in price, specs and performance to the Old Town Vapor 10 Angler. Both are 10-foot recreational kayaks intended for calmer bodies of water, with built-in fishing features like rod holders and a storage tray within the cockpit rim.

When comparing features, the Perception Sound 10.5 has a larger tankwell for increased storage space, and includes scupper holes for drainage along with a bungee rigging to secure your gear. If this is the style of kayak you are looking for, you can’t go wrong with either. It may just depend on which is available at your retailer.

Where to buy the Vapor 10

Old Town kayaks are available at specialty paddlesports shops and a number of large retailers across North America. Try searching the following retailers, and check availability before making a trip to purchase the Old Town Vapor 10:

  • Old Town Vapor 10 angler kayak Cabela’s
  • Old Town Vapor 10 Dunham’s
  • Old Town Vapor 10 angler Academy
  • Old Town Vapor 10 LL Bean

Vapor 10 Pros and cons

  • Comfortable seat
  • Good stability
  • Compact length and manageable weight for easy transportation and storage
  • Affordable entry-level price
  • Add-ons available directly from Old Town
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Small tankwell limits storage

Size and Weight

With a total length of 10’3” (312.4 cm) and a beam of 28.5” (72.4 cm), the Old Town Vapor Angler is on the longer end of the spectrum for a recreational kayak, though it’s not long enough to become unwieldy during transport. Like the Vapor 10XT, the Vapor Angler has an astonishingly large deck height of 16.75” (42.6 cm), which means it offers plenty of internal space to stretch your legs.

The Angler weighs in at 47 lbs (21.3 kg), which makes it a bit heavy for a recreational kayak of this size. However, when compared to some other similar fishing kayaks, the Angler is relatively light. This boat also has durable molded handles at the bow and stern for easier transport to and from the car.

With a maximum weight capacity of 325 lbs (147.7 kg), the Angler provides enough carrying strength for most paddlers and a day’s worth of gear. Keeping in mind that it’s best not to load a boat beyond 80% of their maximum capacity, this kayak isn’t quite big enough, nor does it have the gear storage capacity for anything other than a day trip.

The Old Town Vapor 10 Angler really shines in terms of features, especially for avid fisherfolk.

This kayak is built with an oversized cockpit that allows for easy entry and plenty of legroom. It has an adjustable Comfort Flex seat that offers great lumbar support and padding for a day out on the water. For convenience, this kayak has a molded cockpit tray with a built-in cupholder as well as a molded paddle rest for when you want to put your paddle down to cast your lines.

When it comes to fishing, the Vapor 10 Angler has everything necessary for seeking out the day’s catch. It is built with flush-mounted rod holders as well as an anchor trolley system. It also has a stern day well for storing the day’s haul.

While the boat does have a stern day well and a front deck bungee, it does not offer any dry storage. That said, the spacious cockpit on the Angler also provides a bit of storage space for smaller bits of gear in a dry bag.

Performance

Like its sister kayak, the Vapor 10XT , the Vapor 10 Angler provides a good mix of primary stability and tracking. Due to its mostly flat and wide hull at midship, this boat is fairly stable on calm water, while its V-shaped bow allows for decent slicing through the water.

Since it doesn’t have a skeg or rudder, the Vapor 10 Angler doesn’t track as well in windy conditions as it could. But the boat’s Glide Track foot brace system and thigh pads provide enough power and control to maneuver it on the water.

Ultimately, the Vapor 10 Angler performs well in what it was designed for – casual days on a local lake or river with a fishing rod in hand.

I am sorry to say, My list…

I am sorry to say, My list time out I dumped over and lost fishing gear and some personal pride I made a fast move to my right to grab my fishing rod and kept on going. Very difficult once in water. I have designed a set of floats and they do work.

Old Town Vapor 10 Angler…

Old Town Vapor 10 Angler kayak

Light and easy to handle, paddle holder molded in perpendicular in front of you, adjustable seat back (while in the yak), large cockpit opening to get in and out, plenty of room in the cockpit to carry things, thigh pads, dock cleat, skid plate, cup holder and a tray to hold small things in the front of the cockpit, another cup holder in front of seat between your legs.

The drain plug! An almost useless anchor trolley and no dry storage. If you’re short, the cup holder in the cockpit tray might be a little difficult to reach (because of the large cockpit opening which I have listed as a pro above).

Foot operated Crack of Dawn rudder with deployment system.

Old Town hatch cover to fit the stern day well.

4.5" waterproof deck plate and dry bag inside, back of stern day well.

Replaced anchor trolley with a YakAttack LeverLoc anchor trolley, bow to stern with Harken pulleys.

Anchor reel and anchor locking cam cleat.

2 additional flush mount rod holders behind seat.

2 additional rod holders inside the hull (6' rod limitation on these).

Rod leashes for all rod holders as well as for the paddle.

Added Yakpad high back gel butt and back pad to existing padded seat.

Plier/scissor/sponge holder.

Old Town Contour Carry Handles

Shark teeth with eyes stickers on the bow, they make it go faster :)

This is a great, reasonably priced kayak. I think best suited for still and slow moving waters (class 1, maybe 2). By using the rudder in addition to the paddle I found that it worked much better in faster water but still probably best to avoid.

Mine is the Vapor 10 Angler model (the Angler basically adds two flush mount rod holders behind the seat, bungee cords across the front deck for securing loads, a dock cleat and a crappy anchor trolley). I added additional items for fishing which is mostly what I do out of it.

At 10’ long and 28" wide, I would expect it to be more stable than it is. Fine for still water but watch moving too fast in the cockpit while in moving water. I think it's because the hull is kind of rounded. My Old Town Predator has a better designed tri-hull and is more stable (it's a sit-on as opposed to this being a sit-in). Sit-ins have a lower center of gravity which helps with stability while sit-ons have a higher CG, they tend to have better designed hulls though for stability. I'm speaking of recreational kayaks, like these. It tracks okay but not great, added the rudder and it tracks fantastic now. It’s not a speed demon but when I’m floating a river as opposed to fishing one, I don’t have difficulty keeping up. The larger length-to-width ratio probably slows it a little. If I had it to do all over I would get the Vapor 12 Angler. A little faster, room for 7’ rods internally, a little more room for gear (for overnighters), 50lbs more weight capacity and it only weighs 9lbs more.

A true point of contention is the location of the drain plug, it’s absolutely ridiculous and mostly useless. It’s near the middle of the boat by the rear of the cockpit. It is so awkward trying to drain your boat and you won’t get all of the water out. I added marine sealant to the threads of the plug, over tightened it and the ground the top off of it (essentially sealing it for good). Then I purchased a drain plug kit and installed it in the front, top, right side, works great now. I have another Old Town and use to have another Old Town and neither of them had such a poor placement of the drain plug, they really would have been better off to just leave it off and let the buyer add their own. A lot of Vapor owners complain about this and if you look on their website, the new Vapors still use this ridiculous placement…c’mon Old Town!

This is my first sit-in and while I’m really pleased with this yak, I find that I do prefer my sit-on. My sit-on is much heavier to hall around but easier to fish out of but because of its size, there are a lot of places that I can’t take it because it’s too difficult to get to the water or the water has too many shallow bars and those are the places that this Vapor 10 shines. One last thing, the Vapor has molded rigid carry handles in the front and rear (which most people prefer), I found them hard on my wrists while carrying (broke both wrists in the past) so I installed the Old Town contour carry handles. They are a dual-density handle contoured for comfort and I attached them to the original rigid carry handles, much easier to carry now.

I would definitely recommend this kayak, great for beginners as well as more advanced kayakers.

Great starter kayak for fishing!

I have really enjoyed this…

I have really enjoyed this kayak. It is built like a battleship and can fit my 6'5" frame. Fairly stable and easy to paddle.

I got this on sale at…

I got this on sale at sportsmans warehouse about 2 years ago. All in all its been everything I could ask for. Nice and wide and stable, stable enough to stand up and cast in. I can carry all my fishing gear inside the kayak while carring by myself which is great to cut down on parking fees. The only complaint has been I don't have enough time as if like to fish.

The Vapor 10 by Old Town…

The Vapor 10 by Old Town Canoe is a great kayak for beginners and intermediate paddlers. Ease of entry, manuverability, and good secondary stabilization makes this a great kayak. The Angler version of the Vapor gives you two rod holders, an anchor system and bungie hold-downs. If you don't care about rod holders, anchors or bungies, then the standard Vapor 10 is for you. Two cup holders makes this yak a luxury model. Adjustable footpegs allow the paddler to customize the pegs for optimal leg position. Easy access backrest adjustment can be made without breaking stride. I like the solid handles at fore and aft for carrying the kayak. Tracking is good without sacrificing manuverability. The only negative that I have about the Vapor 10 Angler is the location of the drain plug. In my opinion, someone didn't put much thought into it's location, "Wait! we forgot to put the drain plug in... this looks good. Put it there." You can't open it and position your kayak to drain. You have to hold the kayak in an ackward way to get any water out. Even then, it's next to impossible to get all the water out. I guess that's what sponges are for.

Very solid boat, stable,…

Very solid boat, stable, easy to handle, great for fishing rivers and cant beat the price. Could use front storage..

I have had my Vapor 10 a…

I have had my Vapor 10 a couple of years now and can say this is one great kayak. I primarily use my kayak for fishing small lakes and waterways. It easily navigates into places that other boats find impossible enabling me to catch fish that others can't reach. Furthermore, it is stable and have never once felt like I was going to flip. In fact, I also own a bass boat and have not had it on the water since I started fishing from the kayak.

We have 4 of them and they…

First thing to know is that….

First thing to know is that this kayak is incredibly stable. It would take a great deal of effort to flip one. Taking this into account it is surprisingly fast for it's width, and tracks well. Another positive is that it is quite durable, even with a couple light drops I have suffered no ill effects. The seat was comfortable enough, however I haven't used it for more than 3 hours in a go yet to know if it would be an issue for longer floats. Personally I love how this boat looks in the water. Like you mixed a tank with a shark with kayak. Obviously at this price point it is more of an intro boat, or one you get so other folk can use it. For being in that class it is flawless, and is a very good "all around" kayak. But you can get kayaks that track better, are more stable etc. if that is what you are into. I haven't fished from it but it seems to be set up well for that. Although I haven't had an issue with it I'd say the weight is approaching 50 pounds, something to keep in mind if that might be an issue for you.
