Backpack Review Quechua Forclaz + Comparisons with all 50-80L Quechua Backpacks!

Posted on Last updated: March 25, 2022

As a backpacker, you always have a bit of a love-hate relationship with your backpack, right? You have to log it along on planes, buses, through customs and re-pack it a gazillion times. But at the same time, if you have a backpack that is of good quality, it can mean a world of difference in how you experience your life on the road.

I’ve only ever had two backpacks in my life, the first was a heavy beige, brand-less pack that I got for my very first solo trip (to Tokyo and Australia) in 2006 and the second, the Quechua Forclaz 60 Backpack I got for my second world trip in 2008, that ended up during 7 months through various countries in Asia and Oceania. After that, I ended up bringing the same backpack back to Australia when me and Nick move there to live in Sydney for two years.

Me and my backpack have been through a lot. It has seen music festivals, hiked through the Annapurna mountain region in Nepal, got lost in India and lost in Fiji, survived many border securities and got shampoo all over it on the way back from Australia to Holland. But, without this bag, I couldn’t have made all these amazing trips!

REVIEW: Quechua Forclaz Travel 500 Backpack

travel backpack quechua

I tested the Quechua Forclaz Travel 500 backpack. Spoiler alert: I’m not a fan of this travelpack!

ENGLISH SUBTITLES AVAILABLE

As a backpacker you’ll need a good backpack (seems logical). I bought this Quechua Forclaz Travel 500 from Decathlon. It can contain about 70 litres. Some of that volume is in the detachable shoulder bag. This seemed a very handy backpack to me since when travelling I like to take an extra day pack or bag. However, this backpack wasn’t as handy as I thought. It’s best if you watch the video (turn on English subtitles), but I’ve made a transcription in case you don’t feel like doing that! 🙂

There’s many compartments: you can put away your shoes, tripod and so on. You can carry two bottles on the side. In the front there’s place for your jacket. There’s a lot of space. You have straps on the front and on the side to carry extra gear like a drinking bottle or sleeping bag.

In the back there’s an opening for a camelbak, you can carry a water bag and when you’re walking around you can drink without having to open the whole thing.

The rain cover is very sturdy Which in turn makes it quite heavy. But it’s sturdy and you can also use it to completely cover you backpack and turn it into a duffel bag which you can carry with one hand. That’s handy for transport in the airport: it won’t be pushed of conveyer belts due to loose straps.

This backpacked can be locked with only one padlock. That’s a great advantage. I always look for that nowadays in a backpack.

It’s quite comfortable to carry. If you pull the two orange straps the Easy Fit system Will adjust the backpack to your body in a comfortable way.

The backpack is very sturdy, I don’t think a knife could easily penetrate it. That’s good against thieves. It’s also a good thing you won’t have to replace it after two years. It’s a sturdy thing.

You have to completely untie the shoulder bag to get into your backpack and you get tangled up when you try to release it. The straps on the top and bottom have to be loosened first and only then can it be used as the strap of the shoulder bag. This is very clear in the video, I can’t really describe the frustration in text. This is very annoying but not the worst part. When you want to attach it again the shoulder strap has to be evenly distributed on both sides and when everything goes right you’ll be able to attach it again. This is only the case if you’ve done it correctly, but most of the time it fails. It’s a disaster!

When you want to open your backpack, you always have to detach the shoulder bag because the Decathlon engineers decided to put the buckles over the zipper and you can only open the backpack with that one zipper. The very annoying effect is that every time you want to go in your backpack you have to detach the shoulderbag! It drove me so crazy I gave it away to someone and bought a different one. This is the deciding factor for me. No, no, really, no!

Because the zipper’s on the back and thus you don’t have a sturdy back it collapses like a pudding when you’re trying to load it. This is a real shame. You can try to solve it by holding the back vertically with one hand and at the same time load it with you other hand but that’s a very clumsy method.

The bag itself is quite heavy so if you want to be a lightweight backpacker this one’s not for you.

The conclusion

I wouldn’t buy this. This awkward opening system drives me crazy. Just buy a decent backpack. Or buy this one and don’t use the shoulder bag but take a foldable day pack with you. Or a different solution: buy a good Osprey Farpoint 70. They’re a bit more expensive but they’re better quality with lifelong warranty. Buy everything, but not this Quechua Forclaz Travel 500. Maybe you can buy a cheaper backpack at Decathlon. They have a lot of great travelpacks. Just don’t buy this one.

Thank you for reading or watching this review. I hope it was useful. You can always leave a comment if you bought it and regret it or if you completely disagree with me or if you have different suggestions for backpacks!

5 thoughts on “ REVIEW: Quechua Forclaz Travel 500 Backpack ”

Ik ben blij dat ik iemand heb kunnen overtuigen deze rommel niet te kopen 🙂

I was about to buy this backpack for a world tour especially because in my hometown there’s no Osprey Store. Why do you consider it so bad? What I like is, taking off the shoulder-bag you have it optimal for carry-on luggage. Also, you can use the shoulder bag for city trips. Moreover, it adds an extra layer of security to your luggage – in order that someone access it, it first must get rid of the purse. Overall it seems fine to me. I tried it in the store and it wasn’t such a big problem with the straps. I think the main problem is, in case those buckles are going to break.

Dank voor je review. Dan valt deze dus af.

Wat een mooi slotje! 🙂

Je herkent het! Nogmaals bedankt 😉

Decathlon Quechua Mountain Walking 30L Backpack MH500 | Tested and reviewed

We test this 30l daypack from decathlon's popular quechua range. big on value, can it deliver on performance as well.

Decathlon Quechua Mountain Walking 30L Backpack MH500 positioned on a wall

Decathlon’s Quechua backpack range is difficult to beat when it comes to value for money – it offers solid-performing (but not spectacular) products at remarkably affordable prices. If saving pennies is your priority, it’s probably the best option out there.

At just £55 (at the time of writing), the MH500 is another incredible Quechua bargain. It’s a well-designed 30L hiking daypack with loads of features and two size options. It’s not as comfy or premium quality as more expensive packs, but who cares when the price is this good?

1. Decathlon Quechua Mountain Walking 30L Backpack MH500

Decathlon Quechua Mountain Walking 30L Backpack MH500 front view

www.decathlon.co.uk

  • Great price
  • Decent features
  • Quite solid design
  • Relatively heavy
  • Basic back system

Back system: panel, frame, and harness

Decathlon Quechua Mountain Walking 30L Backpack MH500 back panel

Lower cost daypacks tend to have very simple back systems, which can be sweaty, uncomfortable and deliver poor load transfer. Not so with the MH500, which has a surprising amount of tech in its back system.

Internally there’s a steel frame providing good rigidity and stability, while the back system is a taut mesh frame net known as AirCooling. This creates an air gap between your back and the main body of the pack, ensuring good ventilation and a less sweaty experience. In use, we found this system delivered excellent comfort levels, considering the price.

Decathlon Quechua Mountain Walking 30L Backpack MH500 side view

In terms of the harness, the foam shoulder straps are nicely padded and comfy, while the contoured, pre-curved, chunky hipbelt feels sturdy and takes the weight of the pack nicely. The fit of the harness can be adjusted via various straps, although we found it didn’t hug our figures quite as well as other packs. At the shoulders and hips the fit feels a little clunky.

Back length and sizing

Decathlon Quechua Mountain Walking 30L Backpack MH500 shoulder straps

The MH500 is available in two sizes – small and large. The small is suitable for anyone shorter than 170cm, the large is designed for anyone taller than 170cm. Beyond this the packs are non-adjustable, which means the back length won’t suit all body shapes.

We found the fit of the large pack generally fine for us (5ft 9” tall), although the pack had a tendency to sit a little high on the hips and on the back in general.

Volume, shape, and weight

The MH500 we tested has a capacity of 30L, but it’s also available in 20L and 40L volumes. It has a standard backpack shape, albeit a tad chunkier and taller than average. It is sized 63cm (height) x 30cm (width) x 23cm (depth).

The small-sized 30L pack weighs 1,200g; the large size is 1,300g. This is relatively heavy for a 30L pack, which can reduce comfort over time. Many rivals offer a sub-1kg weight and ultralight hikers will baulk at the 1.2-1.3kg weight of the MH500.

Features: lid, straps, pockets, and weather protection

Decathlon Quechua Mountain Walking 30L Backpack MH500 hydration tube tab

The MH500 has a top lid covering the main bag opening, which is not removable. The top of the lid has a zippered pocket with an internal key chain tag, but there is no zippered pocket on the underside. Various straps are included on the exterior of the pack, including bungee cords for securing trekking poles and side compression straps for bulkier items.

Made from 600-denier polyester with a PU coating, the MH500 feels reassuringly sturdy and water repellent. The materials feel strong and thick, and can withstand a heavy shower or two – particularly if you use the integrated, bright yellow rain cover, which is housed in a zippered pocket at the base of pack. The rain cover is connected to the pack by a stretchy fabric band, ensuring it won’t fly off in a strong wind.

Decathlon Quechua Mountain Walking 30L Backpack MH500 lid

Access to the backpack’s interior is via the top below the lid, where a drawcord closes and opens the pack. But you also get a side zipper, which enables easier access to the main bag compartment. This enables you to grab that pesky pair of gloves (or pack of Haribo) without having to rummage around, elbow-deep, from the top of the pack.

Internally the main compartment has a floating zippered pocket at the top, and a sleeve for a hydration bladder. The bladder’s hose can be held in place by a Velcro loop and then threaded through a slit in the top of the bag before being secured on a shoulder strap.

Decathlon Quechua Mountain Walking 30L Backpack MH500 zips and drink bottle pouch

You also get a whopping nine pockets including two stretchy, spacious hipbelt pockets (big enough for a large smartphone), and two quick-access side water bottle pockets. These are angled forwards so that you can grab and stash your drink bottle on-the-go. It’s a nice idea, although it didn’t work too well during our test hikes. Using a 1L Nalgene, we found that we could easily grab the bottle while wearing the pack, but struggled to replace it, despite contorting our arm and elbow backwards.

It was easier to successfully do this with a thinner, more streamlined bottle, and when the pack was less full. Other pockets include a mesh stash pocket on the front of the bag and a secondary side pocket on the right-hand side of the bag only.

Decathlon Quechua Mountain Walking 30L Backpack MH500 positioned on a wall

Decathlon's Quechua MH500 Backpack is a superbly-priced 30L hiking pack with surprisingly impressive features – but it’s heavy and doesn't sit as well as more premium rivals.

Understand [ edit ]

Sheremetyevo Airport is north-west of the Moscow Ring Road. It is firmly associated with the Leningrad Highway, although it is geographically located to the east, and the village of Sheremetyevsk (now a microdistrict of the city of Dolgoprudny) that gave the name to the airport and is located at Dmitrovskoye highway, which almost no one uses to go to Sheremetyevo.

History [ edit ]

Sheremetyevo is usually perceived as the main Moscow airport. This phenomenon is rooted in the Soviet past, when all international flights were carried out from here. The first passenger flight from the airport took place on August 11, 1959. Built in the early 1960s, the terminal, later known as Sheremetyevo-1, was a monument of its era and, apparently, the first building in the Soviet Union reminiscent of the structure of modern airports with check-in and departure areas as well as cafe for passengers. The original technical solution was also the landing pavilion put out on the airfield - in the people there was a "glass" or "washer" - an escalator gallery connected to the terminal.

For the 1980 Olympics, a new terminal for international flights, Sheremetyevo-2 (now Terminal F) was built. With two terminals-Sheremetyevo-1 and Sheremetyevo-2 standing on opposite sides of the airport-it stayed for almost 30 years before the large-scale reconstruction of the late 2000s, when two new terminals (D and E) were opened near Sheremetyevo-2 and conducted a line railway. After that, the "center of operations" of the airport finally shifted to the south side of the flying field, and the former Sheremetyevo-1, overgrown with a pair of new, rather shed terminals, was given up for the destruction of low-cost and closed in 2015 due to their disappearance. Until mid-2018 with the reconstruction of Terminal B, passengers were served only by DEF terminals, with the northern side of the airport having its own uses. The old building of Sheremetyevo-1 was demolished together with the famous "saucer", in its place is the construction of a new terminal.

Sheremetyevo serves more than 30 million passengers a year, regularly changing places in the ratings with Domodedovo .

Structure [ edit ]

Unlike most modern airports, Sheremetyevo is divided into two clusters , which are on opposite sides of the airport: Terminals A, B and C, and Terminals D, E, and F. Terminal B is the Aeroflot domestic terminal. There are plans for Terminal C (now demolished) to be similarly revived for CIS flights.

In Sheremetyevo, there are two parallel runways just 300 m from each other. They are too close together to be used independently, and the airport's capacity is far behind the number of terminals built in it. To solve this problem a third runway is planned to be built a couple of kilometers from the existing ones. Sheremetyevo is the most well-equipped airport in Russia, and the likelihood that you will be taken to a plane in a bus (rather than a jetbridge) is smaller than other airports, although it is still quite high, especially on domestic flights. In terms of infrastructure, the airport is quite diverse: there are, for example, relatively inexpensive power points, but they will have to be searched. Sheremetyevo is far from anything else: even to nearby hotels you have to go by taxi or book a transfer.

Information [ edit ]

The airport has an official Android app that, along with the flight schedule, contains a detailed diagram of the terminals with all the objects (up to the outlets) and the possibility to route from the current location to any object.

Flights [ edit ]

Southern cluster [ edit ].

55.9632 37.4059 1 Terminal D . Serves domestic and international flights of Aeroflot. The huge building in shape resembles a plane and refers to the most interesting architectural solutions among post-Soviet Russian airports. All the registration is general and is on the 3rd floor, leading to a long corridor from the Aeroexpress station. To the counters there are often queues in which you can stand 20-30 minutes. Less expensive food points are on the 2nd floor (cafe-dining room "Mu-Mu") and on the 1st floor in the arrivals area (McDonald's, Crumb-Potato). The quietest place is on the 2nd floor in the Mu-Mu area. In the left part of the terminal there is a small "clean" zone of the internal sector: there is always a throng, so there is no reason to come here in advance. The international "clean" zone, on the contrary, is quite spacious (and, in addition, it can be moved to an even more spacious terminal E). ( updated Feb 2018 )

55.9648 37.4138 2 Terminal E . International flights of Aeroflot and partner airlines. Not memorable, sometimes frankly shabby design is combined with relative lack of people: there are a lot of places, and there are not enough flights for landing. In the area of check-in counters there is something like Sheremetev's food court - several racks with quite decent food and common tables. In the clean zone there is an inexpensive "Burger King". Jul 2017 ( updated Feb 2018 )

55.967 37.4176 3 Terminal F . One of the oldest buildings of the airport, formerly Sheremetyevo-2 , was opened for the Moscow Olympics in 1980. The architecture of the terminal reflects the representations of that time about comfort and style. Once in the building there was a unique interior with metal pipes hanging from the ceiling and eternal semi-darkness. Unfortunately, many elements of the decor were removed during the reconstruction, but in the departure zone there were still characteristic lamps, from which literally blows the solemnity of those times when each flight by plane was an event - do not miss them. Strange, sometimes uncomfortable layout in the terminal, too, remained: the check-in desks are preceded by the point of inspection (that is, the inspection in this terminal needs to be done not twice but three times), but passport control is right behind the registration desks, so the distance in the terminal before the landing, here is minimal. From the terminal F, individual flights of Aeroflot and all the partners that are least liked by them fly. If you are in Terminal F - be sure to look for the staircase upstairs, where there is a good dining room, a restaurant overlooking the flying field and the airport museum. On the 1st and 2nd floors the infrastructure is the same as everywhere else. ( updated Feb 2018 )

55.9638 37.4157 4 Terminal Aeroexpress . Self-contained territory with two floors, densely packed with all sorts of cafes and shops. If you arrive or leave, the terminal needs to go right through. There are a lot of fast food outlets, by the standards of the airport are relatively cheap, and in the shops, you can buy everything from the tourist equipment to the scarves from Pavlovsky Posad. ( updated Feb 2018 )

Inside the southern cluster, the DEF terminals are connected both to each other and to the Aeroexpress terminal. Pass through the terminals between the terminals and there is a "clean" international zone: if you do not have enough free outlets in the "clean" zone D or F, look for them in the always deserted terminal E. Cheapest food in the "clean" zone - "Burger King" in the same terminal E with almost urban prices.

Northern Cluster [ edit ]

55.9827 37.4422 5 Terminal A . Used by business aviation. ( updated Feb 2018 )

55.9814 37.4144 6 Terminal B . Rebuilt in 2018, this terminal hosts Aeroflot domestic flights. ( updated Feb 2018 )

55.9808 37.4105 7 Terminal C . Closed, not used. Jul 2017 ( updated Feb 2018 )

Wait [ edit ]

The airport has plenty of ATMs and currency exchange offices, duty free shops, a hairdresser, a pharmacy, and several overpriced cafes and basic restaurants.

Unlimited free WiFi is available.

This corresponds to what I was looking for because it is a fairly rare product with these technical characteristics.

Bag given to my husband who is more than satisfied with its comfort and capacity for a day hike.

Well made, practical to use and roomy. Good product for price/quality.

very good bag, well designed but the water pipe passage is not open

Very comfortable bag to carry, with very good ventilation, even in (very) hot weather. Storage is sometimes a little complicated but the pockets on the belt and on the top are a real plus. The different settings are sufficient to provide comfort depending on the conditions

Very convenient

Very good hiking bag, comfort++ You just can't put things that are too bulky in it (e.g. 4 person meals) it doesn't fit unfortunately. Otherwise perfect

This bag would have everything good, apart from the fact that the loading must be considered - the arch of the back for ventilation limits the loading volume in the center of the bag. It cannot be otherwise so splitting up is essential (pair of binoculars, camera, warm clothes, raincoat, snack, guide book... it may be necessary to arrange or choose, in any case, laptop PC not possible) Remember to close the flap pocket otherwise all or almost all of the contents fall out. Very comfortable belt - strap perhaps a little narrow and short. Very comfortable straps. This bag becomes one with its wearer very easily and effectively.

Easy to use

A great backpack for one or two-day mountain hikes, it is incredibly comfortable to wear, has many compartments that make it easier to use, beautiful color and material that is easy to clean. I am very pleased! It has served me well for over a year. :)

Despite its size, the curved back plate limits the filling I find. On the other hand, for skiing it’s perfect! No more water bottle that crushes your back when falling.

Practical for short hikes

Great backpack although very compact (20L). There is plenty of storage inside and very ventilated. I spent several days traveling with this backpack, very comfortable.

Good color and resistance Size I think it lacks a little in width, but good for medium distances

A good bag to go with your hiking equipment. It is comfortable once properly adjusted.

What differences are there with the old mh500 bag?

The back of this new bag has been fully reworked for greater comfort: a tight net with frame gives you more space between your back and the bag to reduce the damp back effect. This net used for the back, called mesh, is also softer than previously. What's more, this new model comes in 2 sizes for small and large sizes. The 2 hip pockets are more spacious and stretchy and access to flask on the sides is easier.

Which size should i choose?

During several field test sessions with hikers of different sizes, we noticed that between 20 and 40 litres, the difference in comfort was mainly down to the back height of the bag. We therefore offer all our models in 2 sizes to meet these requirements. If you are taller than 170 cm, go for size L. If you are shorter than 170 cm, you will be better off with a size S.

This bag can hold 1 litre, 2 litre or 3 litre pockets. However, although the pocket is voluminous, it will take up place that could be used for storing other belongings. The side pockets are designed for flasks of maximum 1 litre.

Why are our rain covers orange?

This is a deliberate choice as we believe it's important to stay visible in the mountains, even in fog, in case of any problem. This orange colour has the advantage of being visible from a helicopter. It's also a visible colour on the road if you use your bag when cycling.

Hand luggage

When you are travelling by plane, the authorised hand luggage size is 55x35x25cm3 maximum (warning, this can vary depending on the airline). This bag can be used as hand luggage, so long as you don't load the top too much.

How do i adjust my backpack?

1 - Loosen all the straps (straps, hip belt, load adjuster straps). 2 - Put the backpack on. 3 - As this bag is small in volume, put the belt around the waist and tighten it. 4 -Tighten the shoulder straps. 5 - Adjust the load adjuster straps as needed.

How to pack my backpack?

AT THE BOTTOM of the bag, pack your sleeping material, and heavy material nearer the back. Slide your water pocket into the compartment.AT THE TOP of the bag, store your waterproof jacket and fleece within arm’s reach. In the pockets, you can put your sun cream, maps, cap and sunglasses. Cereal bars or your mobile phone can be stored in the belt pockets for quick access. The straps under the bag can also be used to attach a compact tent.
