So, as a person of a very similar age to the fabulous duo that is OMD, and having seen them initially over 35 years ago, this was always going to be in some ways an enjoyable walk down memory lane.

That said I'm sure I didn't view it with rose tinted spectacles, nor did all the rest of the audience.

It was a step back in time to 80s pop synth at its best, but also a concert that other far more modern artists would be proud to have performed (think PSB and the like).

Ably supported by a drummer and keyboard (and sax) player, Andy and Paul both performed as if they were still in their 20s and played a set that lasted over 90 minutes that passed in flash. Included were the majority of their greatest hits (much applauded by the 50 something (and 60 something) audience) and also some of their latest singles (again well received (its OMD, of course it would be well received)).

All in all this was marvellous concert, well performed (great voice and dancing Andy) and likewise well received by a very enthusiastic audience.

I will certainly watch them again when they next tour, as this concert rolled back the years for nearly all the audience.

This event made me an incredible happiness and seven days before Christmas which was my great gift of all these years

Especially when I slipped my hand behind the back of Andy McCluskey and him on my shoulder and I thought I was going to faint and it was still in a dream ....

Being a great French fan for many years at the age of 14 and now 53 years old it's crazy!

In addition I wanted for too long to meet my favorite idols and that evening and in addition, I had told them their new book 40 years "pretending to see the future" my name Dalida My last name was mentioned on the last page and that's why I went to Liverpool Caverne Club last December for "finally"! realize my dream for almost 40 years of love and that night I managed

Andy and Paul were very happy and delighted to have been there for them and especially Andy who told me little French words to put me at ease and I saw that he was very happy and after I asked him if I could still have a photo and also to Paul and they accepted and I slipped my ma behind Andy's back and him on my shoulder and Paul there was no more room for also put his on my shoulder

They were wonderful and so kind to me and me especially met my favorite idols

In addition to Andy I offered him a very beautiful picture believing that he would never recognize it and it was his greatest gift and Andy McCluskey will never forget this gift on behalf of his very big French fan and this evening was really successful and without regret.

OMD my idols and forever

Unforgettable evening and the only French to have participated in this event.

In addition I will very soon see them again in Paris February 16, 2020 in concert with VIP upgrades backstage all to be near them again and meet other members omd group.

Synthpop heroes Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) will be arriving stateside next spring for their Souvenir Greatest Hits 2022 Tour, celebrating 40 years of the band.

Like many other artists, their initial anniversary tour was delayed by the pandemic, but now the legendary UK outfit will return to the road for a UK arena tour this fall and North America in 2022.

The tour kicks off April 22 in Orlando, and dates include Atlanta, DC, NYC, Boston, Toronto, Chicago, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, Austin, Denver, Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, Oakland, Los Angeles, and more. Tickets for the whole tour go on sale Friday, June 18 at 10:00am local time.

Along with their forthcoming Souvenir tour, OMD will also be performing a 40th Anniversary livestream, titled You Me & OMD , on June 19 at 4:00 pm EST. Tickets are on sale and a portion of the proceeds with go towards OMD’s touring crew who haven’t worked since February 2020.

Following on from their 40th anniversary celebrations last year which saw them release their greatest hits and anniversary box set, Souvenir, OMD has announced further remastered reissues of their UK Top 20 album Liberator and their 1996 album Universal on vinyl on August 6, that’s available for pre-sale.

OMD announces 24-date North American greatest hits tour in 2022

Pioneering synth duo Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark today announced plans to mount a 24-date North American tour next year celebrating the group’s four decades together.

The trek, named after the recently released career-spanning box set Souvenir , opens April 22 in Orlando, Florida, and runs though May 26, when it closes in Los Angeles. In between, OMD will play 20 more U.S dates and Canadian shows in Toronto and Vancouver.

Before that, Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys will perform a webcast called You, Me & OMD on June 19. Head over to the band’s website for details on the livestream and ticket info on the North American tour.

OMD Detail 2024 North American Tour

In support of their latest album, Bauhaus Staircase

OMD , aka Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, have mapped out a North American tour for Fall 2024 in support of their latest album, Bauhaus Staircase .

Kicking off on September 11th in Vancouver, the North American leg will continue with dates in Los Angeles, Austin, Chicago, Toronto, New York City, and more. Glaswegian six-piece Walt Disco will serve as the opener for its entirety. See OMD’s full touring schedule below.

OMD Announce Fall 2024 North American Tour Dates

Tickets for the upcoming tour dates are available now.

Over the past four decades — give or take a decade break — the illustrious and critically acclaimed Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) have sold over 40 million records worldwide, establishing them as electronic synthesiser pioneers and one of Britain's best-loved pop groups.

Their 13 long players include benchmark-raising classics Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (1980), Organisation (1980), Architecture & Morality (1981), and Dazzle Ships (1983). OMD conquered the United States, and yielded the 1986 hit, " If You Leave " from the Pretty In Pink Soundtrack. They have also achieved 12 top 20 hits on the  UK Singles Chart , as well as three top 20 hits on the US  Billboard Hot 100 .  Following the recent celebration of their 40th anniversary, OMD returned last year with their first new studio album since 2017's highly praised The Punishment Of Luxury , a record entitled  Bauhaus Staircase  (released via White Noise through The Orchard). The record is regarded as OMD's most explicitly political record and the crowning achievement of their desire to be both Stockhausen and Abba - born from the impetus to kickstart new explorations during lockdown when, as Andy McCluskey admits: "I rediscovered the creative power of total boredom." Predominantly written, recorded, and mixed by both McCluskey and Paul Humphreys (who has recently become a second-time father), Bauhaus Staircase's other main external influence was David Watts, mainly known as a rock producer who helmed Sheffield band The Reytons' recent No 1 album and mixed two tracks on the new OMD record. With Bauhaus Staircase, OMD have created a landmark album worthy of their finest work, showing a duo who are still perfectly in sync 45 years after their first gig at legendary Liverpool club Eric's. 

"I'm very happy with what we've done on this record," McCluskey summarizes. "I'm comfortable if this is OMD's last statement." In celebration of their new LP, OMD have also returned to the stage, currently in the midst of 40 sold out shows across Europe, UK & Ireland, including their biggest ever London headline show at London's O2 Arena on March 24th. Earlier this year, OMD announced their return to the States as well, with two dates at The Greek in Los Angeles (September 19 and 20). Now, the band has finally announced a full series of fall 2024 North American tour dates — tickets are on sale this Friday, February 23. "We are so excited to be able to tour again with a brand new album to showcase,” says Andy McCluskey. “It's been six years since we learned new songs for live performances. The songs from Bauhaus Staircase will fit beautifully into our setlist - we just have to choose which five to play, as we have to treat people to the hits as well!" Walt Disco will be supporting OMD on all North American dates. "Joining OMD on this incredible tour of the US and Canada feels beyond our wildest dreams.", says the band. "The tour across Europe and the UK so far has been nothing short of magic. OMD have always been musical heroes for us, but the support, wisdom, and friendship they've afforded us during our time together has deepened our respect for them more than we could have imagined. For a band like us, being given this opportunity could mean having a career, and we can't wait to show OMD that their faith has been well placed."

Live Review: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark @ Lincoln Theatre — 4/26/22

The most extraordinary musical acts in modern pop history have emerged from groundbreaking scenes that imbue them with mythic powers. And so it was wholly satisfying to witness Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, one of the very finest UK bands, fully embrace their own mythology in a pandemic-delayed 40th-anniversary celebration of hits at DC’s Lincoln Theatre this week, when frontman Andy McCluskey and company smartly acknowledged the creative ground that forged OMD in late ’70s England.

In the concert’s most extraordinary moment, OMD reset their positions during the show’s midpoint to place the four band members at the lip of the stage in a Kraftwerk formation, whereupon Andy dedicated the live rarity “Statues” to the group’s long-departed friend Ian Curtis.

Over the decades, of course, Andy has cited a 1975 Kraftwerk show at the Empire Theatre, where he sat in Seat Q36, as leaving an indelible mark upon his musical consciousness. This show, among other influences, inspired Andy and his OMD co-founder Paul Humphreys to experiment with electronic sounds, leading to the release of their very Futurist and remarkable self-titled debut album in 1980.

Along the way, Liverpool-based OMD played some of their very first shows in 1978 and 1979 with Joy Division, the famed Mancunian post-punk quartet fronted by Ian, a tortured poet who soon took his own life. And so at the Lincoln Theatre on April 26, the surprising presentation of “Statues,” lifted from OMD’s 1980 sophomore album Organisation, neatly encapsulated some prominent aspects of the band’s fantastic origin story. (The audience knew this was a different sort of performance from the start when OMD played the equally rare “Stanlow,” also from Organisation, as the second number of the concert.)

In an amazing one-two tap to the ticklish underbelly of the new wave gestalt, Andy dropped that early OMD song “Almost,” another moving and arresting selection, inspired young Vince Clarke, another friend of the band, to experiment with synthesizers and then form Depeche Mode. The audience was thrilled by Andy’s casual sharing of this information right before OMD then performed “Almost,” still in Kraftwerk formation.

The four individuals who constitute Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark now cast iconic figures on stage as well as throughout modern pop history. Andy windmilled throughout the show in his awkward but charming “dad dance.” But his open stance and outspread arms invited the audience to soak up his lyrical genius and his melodic sophistication. Over the decades, Andy has emerged as the Indiana Jones of the First Wave set — a cosmopolitan who’s not afraid to get his hands dirty but is equally effective at holding court in intellectual discussions about art, history, and humanity. All sides of him were on display in DC as he softly intoned the words of the recent single “Don’t Go” and barreled through the upbeat classic “Locomotion.”

Paul, by appearances a bit centered, remained a magnetic presence on stage, hovering over his synthesizer but also tackling frontman duties for the beloved tunes “(Forever) Live and Die” and “Souvenir” at the show’s one-third mark (and again for “Secret” in the encore). Although lacking Andy’s more energized showmanship, Paul nonetheless exuded authority and grace. His power stemmed not only from his outstanding musicianship but also from his genuine kindness, a quality that manifests itself in the very best of OMD’s songs.

Martin Cooper, fellow synthesist to Paul, appeared stoic and focused for much of the show, but he often enjoyed a whimsical flourish and a broad smile during numbers like the zippy “Tesla Girls.” Martin also shined in an anticipated moment of glory when he reminded us of his range and multi-instrumentalist chops upon seizing the saxophone for “So in Love.” The song no doubt enjoyed status as a top USA hit for OMD due to Martin’s savvy and his enchanting saxophone assuredly transported many members of the audience mentally back to halcyon days of young romance.

Stuart Kershaw, who stepped in for legacy OMD drummer Malcolm Holmes in 2015, was as ever a powerhouse. Stuart was capable of coloring OMD’s songs with a variety of temperments, including the loose funkiness of “Sailing on the Seven Seas,” one of the very best OMD songs — a song that Stuart cowrote with Andy for 1991’s Sugar Tax and that the band played toward the end of the main set. A lively and gregarious musician, Stuart exploded into “Enola Gay,” perhaps the richest *and* catchiest pop tune of all time, to close the set with impressive vigor, installing the backbone to the spritely twists and turns of a number that manages to marry the thrill of ’80s-era romanticism to the European nuclear fears of the time.

OMD began the encore with “If You Leave,” the irresistible torch song Andy and Paul famously wrote over the course of 24 hours in a Los Angeles studio for Gen X superfilm “Pretty in Pink.” As far as mythmaking goes, we can forever thank that tune for imprinting OMD upon the psyche of many American teens in 1986!

And an audience cannot properly celebrate the history of OMD without the band’s very first, and highest BPM, single, “Electricity,” which closed the four-song encore with celebratory singalongs and madcap frolicking in the aisles. As Andy exhorted at the beginning of the show, “Just because we’re not at 9:30 Club doesn’t mean you cannot stand up and dance!” And dance the very crowded theatre did to all of the songs of OMD’s Souvenir Tour, celebrating 40 years of superb music and the exciting mythology of a band with yet more to give. May we see these legends return to US shores with Bauhaus Stairway, their slated 14th studio album, in 2023.

Synth-pop, post-punk, and new wave pioneers Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) are poised to captivate North American audiences with their much-anticipated fall tour, starting in September 2024. The announcement follows their standout performance at the Darker Waves Festival in Huntington Beach last November, setting the stage for a series of shows that will highlight their legendary live performance prowess. This tour marks a pivotal moment for OMD, offering a stage to showcase their latest work alongside their timeless classics.

OMD’s musical journey, rooted in the post-punk era and quickly evolving to embrace new-wave, has set them apart as innovators. Their 1979 debut single “Electricity,” released on the iconic Factory Records and produced by the legendary Martin Hannett, was a bold introduction to their unique sound. Inspired by Kraftwerk’s “Radioactivity,” “Electricity” was a nod to their electronic music predecessors, setting the foundation for OMD’s pioneering role in the electronic music scene.

The band’s recent European tour, which included their largest-ever headline show at London’s O2 Arena, signals a creative resurgence. Their latest album, “Bauhaus Staircase,” released via White Noise, has been celebrated as a high point in their career, blending their signature sound with incisive political commentary. Andy McCluskey, the band’s co-founder, expressed his contentment with the album, potentially positioning it as the band’s final statement. “I’m comfortable if this is OMD’s last statement,” McCluskey said, emphasizing the album’s significance.

The North American tour will feature a mix of new tracks and fan favorites, with McCluskey revealing the band’s excitement about integrating “Bauhaus Staircase” into their live set. “We are so excited to be able to tour again with a brand new album to showcase,” McCluskey says. “It’s been six years since we learned new songs for live performances. The songs from ‘Bauhaus Staircase’ will fit beautifully into our setlist – we just have to choose which five to play, as we have to treat people to the hits as well!”

Walt Disco, set to support OMD throughout the North American leg, adds to the tour’s anticipation. The involvement of such a dynamic supporting act promises a varied and engaging concert experience for attendees.
