Visiting the factory where Peeps are made, in Bethlehem, Pa., is a true Willy Wonka experience. The building is crammed with pipes full of marshmallow and hoses full of sugar. Spray guns spray food coloring and flavors. Even the “whoops” moments that occasionally happen when the candymakers are testing new products seem like fun: “We have an engineer who is known for pushing buttons he’s not supposed to,” says Daniel Moyer, a food scientist at Just Born Quality Confections, the company that makes Peeps. “Sometimes he ends up completely covered in marshmallow.”

It wasn’t always so fun. Back in the early 1950s, some employees at the Peeps factory were ending every shift with limp, sore arms. They had spent hours hand-squeezing marshmallow into the shape of tiny chicks. Back then, each individual Peep took 27 hours to make from start to finish.

That all changed in 1954. That’s when Bob Born, who was a member of the family that founded the company, and a colleague invented a machine that could make Peeps automatically. Now it takes only six minutes from the moment marshmallow meets the conveyor belt to the final boxing.

Bob Born died in January at age 98. But his legacy lives on at that same factory, which now houses four production belts. They pump out 5.5 million Peeps on an average day, in all kinds of shapes (like bunnies, or skulls in the fall), flavors (sour watermelon, anyone?) and colors.

Of course, the classic Peep, especially during the busy Easter season, is still that fluffy little yellow chick. Here’s how they’re made.

Preparing the Sugar

The bright yellow (or pink, or blue) sugar that coats Peeps chicks starts as the same white stuff you have at home — except the Peeps factory pours it out of 100-pound bags. Four bags at a time go into giant rotating drums that tumble the sugar the way a dryer tumbles clothes. Then a worker pours food coloring into a funnel that feeds a spray gun, which shoots it into the drum, where the tumbling mixes and dries it.

The sugar-dyeing process takes about 18 minutes. Then the sugar is emptied into giant bins and brought over to the beginning of a long conveyor belt, where a vacuum sucks up the sugar and spreads it out on the belt.

A photograph of yellow sugar pouring out of a metal drum.

Cooking the Marshmallow

If you’ve ever bitten into a Peep, you know that underneath its brightly colored sugar skin are insides made of marshmallow. To create all that fluff, 1,400 pounds of water, sugar and corn syrup are first heated into a hot, sticky syrup that candymakers call a bob. Gelatin is added to help the bob stiffen up so that it can eventually hold its shape, along with vanilla and other flavors. The process is overseen by marshmallow cooks, who hold one of the most specialized jobs at the factory. It’s their responsibility to make sure the marshmallow is perfectly fluffy — if it isn’t the right density, it could throw everything off.

Shaping the Chicks

How exactly does the marshmallow mixture transform from a blob of goo to a brood of beaky little chicks? Well, that’s a secret that Just Born keeps under wraps. But here’s the basic idea: The liquid marshmallow is pumped through an aerator — a wide tube full of spinning wires that whip air into it, making it fluffy — and into a machine called a depositor. Then the depositor squeezes the marshmallow onto the sugarcoated conveyor belt.

The Chick Army Arrives

The Peeps are made in sets of five connected chicks, like little troops marching down the conveyor belt. It happens quickly, with new sets of chicks born every few seconds.

Taking a Sugar Shower

As the Peeps proceed along the conveyor belt, they enter what the company calls a sugar shower— although it’s actually more like a sugar dust storm. The belt carries the chicks under a set of nozzles that bombard them with compressed air. That kicks up the layer of sugar on the belt into a frenzy that coats every surface of the (still warm and gooey) Peeps.

Making Faces

Now the Peeps are recognizable as yellow chicks, but they’re missing one important thing: eyes! The conveyor belt carries them toward machines that hold melted, edible carnauba wax and are equipped with sensors that can tell the chicks are approaching. As each chick passes under, the machine’s nozzles make a PFFT! sound, like a BB gun, and shoot two wax eyes onto each chick. Usually, they land in the right place. But if the timing is off, employees adjust the machine and remove any messed-up Peeps. (They don’t go to waste. They’re melted down to use again — after all the floating eyes have been strained out.)

Cooling Off

The Peeps are now complete, but they’re still too warm and soft to be packaged. (But they’re perfect for eating, according to the employees who get to taste-test them at this point.) So the conveyor belt takes a 161-foot route to the packaging area to give them a chance to cool. At some point after the sugar shower (it varies on the different production lines), the chicks also pass over wire mesh that allows extra sugar to fall through, leaving them squeaky clean and ready for packing.

Passing Inspection

As the Peeps make their way to the packing area, they pass over trap doors that can be triggered if a worker notices something wrong with the batch. Peeps that fall through the trap door are carried into a bucket that will ultimately be dumped back into the mixing kettle.

Cozy in Their Trays

If they’re good to go, the rows of chicks continue on to be packed into trays. There are a couple of different ways this happens: On one production line, people put the Peeps into trays by hand. On another, robots with rubber fingers (soft enough not to smush the delicate marshmallow) do the job. And on yet another, the conveyor belt drops them neatly into place.

Wrapping Up

The chick-filled trays pass through a machine called a flow wrapper. It’s kind of like a giant tape gun, but instead of tape, it’s strung with plastic packaging. As the trays pass through, the material wraps around them and a heated metal jaw seals them shut.

Off to the Boxes

After the trays are wrapped up, a spiral belt carries them toward a final quality check, where they pass through a metal detector that’s also a scale, to make sure nothing from the factory equipment has somehow gotten inside. Then the finished packages of chicks are boxed up so they can begin their next journey: into your stomach.

The Peeps Factory Makes More Than 5 Million Peeps A Day, And You Need To See How It's Done

The process is MESMERIZING.

preview for Take A Tour Of The Peeps Factory, Where More Than 5 Million Peeps Are Made Every Single Day

That's a total of 2 billion Peeps made per year—2 BILLION—in case you were wondering. Fun fact: That's enough to circle the earth two and half times. Today, each little marshmallow chick takes about six minutes to create, and many are made at once. It's a far cry from the old-school Peeps-making process. Circa 1953, it took 27 hours to create just one Peeps Marshmallow Chick by hand with a pastry tube.

Yellow, Meringue, Cuisine, Food, Dish,

Sam Born, a candy maker who emigrated from Russia, had a son Bob, who "helped mechanize the marshmallow forming process in 1954, enabling Just Born (Peeps' parent company) to become the world's largest manufacturer of novelty marshmallow treats," according to Peeps. Today, Just Born is led by cousins Ross Born and David Shaffer, who took over from their fathers, Bob Born and Jack Shaffer, in 1992. Keepin' it all in the family !

As you can tell from the video, watching Peeps being made is a seriously mesmerizing experience. Each chick or bunny starts with raw ingredients, including sugar, corn syrup, gelatin, air, and "love." The ingredients are then mixed, cooked, and pumped into a huge mixing kettle, where a gelatin solution is added. This helps the marshmallow keep its shape. Flavor is also added in this step before the kettle blends the ingredients together and pumps the finished liquid marshmallow.

Yellow, Machine,

Next, the liquid marshmallow passes through a high-speed mixing head while also being "plumped" with compressed air. This part gives the marshmallows the light, fluffy consistency necessary for creating the various Peeps shapes.

After being pumped onto a production belt, the marshmallow is finally formed into the Peeps you know and love. Next up is the dusting chamber, where compressed air blows colored sugar onto the process belt, creating a "sugar shower" for the marshmallows. The Peeps get their candied eyes from a machine before going across a transfer, which separates the marshmallow shapes from the colored sugar that's left over from the sugar shower. None of that leftover is wasted; the sugar is reintroduced into the process.

Yellow, Food, Cuisine, Dish, Ingredient, Peeps, Baking, Pastry, Baked goods,

This Easter, there are about 20 varieties of Peeps Marshmallow candies available—anything chick-shaped being the most popular. Four out of every five Peeps purchased are the little birdies, whether they're original, flavored, chocolate-dipped, or covered in chocolate.

Itching to check out the Peeps factory now? You may be in luck! For the first time ever, Peeps is opening its factory to fans through a partnership with the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley. According to a press release , the Peeps Helping Peeps sweepstakes has a grand prize you won't want to miss—it includes a trip for four for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Peeps Factory in Bethlehem, PA.

Yellow, Peeps, Food, Hand,

To enter, donate five dollars to UWGLV by visiting its website , or you can text "peepsunited" to 40403. For every $5 donation you made, you will receive one chance to win. So, it's beneficial for everyone if you donate more than once!

The grand prize winner will be notified on or around April 12 and will be announced to the public on April 18 at United Way's Day of Caring event. Good luck!

All it takes to enter the contest is a minimum $5 donation to United Way, which can be made at  https://unitedwayglv.org/peeps  or by texting "peepsunited" to 40403. The sweepstakes lasts until April 8, 2019, and there's no limit on how many times you can enter.

The winner will be notified sometime around April 12, and United Way will make a public announcement on April 18 at its Day of Caring event.

It's the first time Peeps has ever opened its doors to the public, a move reminiscent of Roald Dahl's iconic Wonka chocolate factory.

"Although we've had many requests and lots of fans show up at our doors over the years, the PEEPS® factory has never been open to the public," Pye said in the statement.

Peeps Offers First-Ever Factory Tour to the Public — Here’s How to Get Inside

Marshmallow Peeps, those fluffy chicks coated in colored sugar and dotted with two little eyes, have come a long way since they were first mass-produced back in 1953 . They now pop up in a variety of Easter characters (like bunnies) to year-round holiday-themed shapes from ghosts and pumpkins for Halloween to hearts for Valentine’s Day and gingerbread people for Christmas. If the thrill of squishing a Peep in your teeth at Easter or any of these other holidays isn’t enough to sate your appetite for all things Peeps, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania-based candy manufacturer Just Born Quality Confections has an opportunity you won’t want to miss: A chance to tour the Peeps factory.

Just Born is teaming up with local nonprofit the United Way of the Greater Lehigh to support the latter’s fundraising efforts by offering a tour package to one lucky person who donates to the organization. ”The winner of our Peeps Helping Peeps Sweepstakes will embark upon a once-in-a-lifetime tour of our factory and witness first-hand how our iconic Peeps marshmallow is made, all while helping raise funds in support of important community enhancing programs,” Just Born’s senior vice president of sales and marketing Matt Pye said in a statement.

The grand prize includes airfare and hotel accommodations for the winner and three guests, an exclusive tour experience of the Just Born facility, and a $250 gift certificate to the Peeps & Co. store. We’re guessing you might get to eat some Peeps fresh from the production line, too, but that’s just pure (hopeful) speculation.

"Although we've had many requests and lots of fans show up at our doors over the years, the Peeps factory has never been open to the public,” Pye stated. “We couldn't think of a better reason to open our doors for the first time ever than by teaming up with our local United Way to help give back to the community that Peeps calls home.” The Peeps partnership will also go to help United Way “support education initiatives by raising funds for student programs, including programs to help raise children's reading scores,” a statement from Just Born explains.

All it takes to enter (for U.S. residents over 18 years old, only) is a qualifying $5 minimum donation at unitedwayglv.org/peeps or via text by messaging “peepsunited” to phone number 40403 by April 8, 2019. Every $5 donation is another entry, and there's no limit. The winner will be notified April 12 before being officially announced April 18 at United Way's Day of Caring event.

If you don’t end up landing a coveted spot on the Just Born factory tour, don’t worry. There are quite a few videos of the Peeps-making available to you online to satisfy your need for the oddly satisfying manufacturing process. But if you really want to feel like you’re there, fire up your smartphone and slap on your VR headset to watch the below 360-degree video from the Food Network YouTube page. (You can, of course, also scroll around with your desktop mouse.)

Now if only the internet could transmit the addictive chew and crunch of those sugary treats, too…

Peeps will open its Bethlehem factory to the public for the first time ever

We have a sugar high just thinking about going.

071018_AdamHermannHeadshot_Carroll.jpg

I’ve lived in Pennsylvania for 96 percent of my life, and I’ve always loved Peeps, but until Thursday I had no idea that their parent company, Just Born Quality Confections, was based in Bethlehem. That’s super wild!

If you, like me, love Peeps and have always wanted a behind-the-scenes view of your favorite weird marshmallow things, here’s some good news: you could be the first customer to ever set foot inside the factory.

Peeps is raising money through a partnership with the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, Just Born announced this week , by launching a nationwide sweepstakes.

The “Peeps Helping Peeps Sweepstakes” (Peepstakes?) grand prize is a trip for four to the Peeps Factory in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. You can enter today by making a donation of at least $5 to the United Way of Greater Lehigh Valley, which will go towards supporting community schools.

You can click here to donate right now.

"Although we've had many requests and lots of fans show up at our doors over the years, the PEEPS factory has never been open to the public," Matt Pye, SVP of Sales and Marketing at Just Born, said in a release. "The winner of our PEEPS Helping Peeps Sweepstakes will embark upon a once-in-a-lifetime tour of our factory and witness first-hand how our iconic PEEPS marshmallow is made."

The peepstakes will run through April 8, and the winner will be announced April 12.

I’d like to imagine it’s a colorful, sugar-crusted wonderland inside. I’m probably wrong. Soon, someone will be able to tell me.

Why Just Born doesn’t offer factory tours to the general public

Just Born Quality Confections has announced plans twice in 20 years to build a visitor center, offering fans a window into how their favorite candies are made.

In 2019, its flagship Bethlehem factory remains closed to the general public. But the company is partnering with the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley on a national sweepstakes offering up a tour for four of the Stefko Boulevard facility.

A $5 donation to the local United Way enters the donor into a drawing, with the grand prize winner to be notified on or about April 12.

Just Born is calling the offer a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity, and notes it receives "many requests and lots of fans" showing up at the front door for a peek at the making of Peeps, Hot Tamales, Mike and Ike and other candies.

So why are factory tours for the general public off limits?

Just Born cites “security, safety and liability concerns” and efforts to protect its products from intentional adulteration, a push known as Food Defense under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“However, fans are always encouraged to visit www.justborn.com to see how our candy is made or visit one of our two Peeps and Company stores located in Center Valley, PA and National Harbor, MD,” Just Born said in response to an inquiry about the tour prohibition.

Peeps manufactured at Just Born in Bethlehem

In this Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, photo, Roger Hildebeitel inspects Peeps as they move through the manufacturing process at the Just Born factory in Bethlehem, Pa. With the storied candy brand celebrating its 60th anniversary that year, a quirky new TV ad campaign launched talking about all the things people do with their Peeps. AP

Just Born in 1999 envisioned a visitor center similar to Easton’s Crayola Factory opening within five years. The proposal for a visitor center was firmed up in 2005, with plans announced for a giant Peep-shaped entrance and interactive exhibits exploring the science behind the candy. A glass-walled hallway was to look in on the factory floor.

The proposal fell through in 2007 when a state grant failed to materialize.

For a shot at the tour sweepstakes, which includes airfare and two nights' accommodations for four, make a donation at unitedwayglv.org/peeps or by texting peepsunited to 40403.

Samara acquires factory to scale manufacturing of backyard as demand for adus soars in california.

Vertical integration gives Samara control over the entire ADU process, from design and prefabrication to delivery and installation

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Feb. 29, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, Samara announced it has acquired a factory that brings the manufacturing of its high-quality accessory dwelling unit (ADU), Backyard, completely in house. Located in Mexicali, Mexico, the factory gives Samara more control over the quality standard of Backyard, shortens delivery timelines, accelerates product development and enables the company to meet rising customer demand in California and beyond.

Born out of Airbnb’s R&D unit, Samara is an independent company revolutionizing how homeowners can add living space to their homes. Its first product, Backyard, is available in studio, one bedroom and two bedroom layouts, with a larger two bedroom, two bathroom layout launching soon. Backyard is designed to mirror a homeowner’s evolving needs, whether that’s extra space to house family, a home office, or a rental property that creates an additional income stream.

At 150,000 square feet, Samara’s new factory gives the company enough space to build its modular units from start to finish. After Backyard’s interiors and exteriors are finished in the factory, each unit is loaded onto a truck and sent directly to a customer’s property.

Controlling a complex supply chain end-to-end can be challenging, leading many companies to outsource their manufacturing. Samara believes that vertical integration is key to ensuring the superior quality of its units and expediting delivery times for customers, who are urgently seeking solutions to more space. The company’s conviction aligns with the surging demand for ADUs; ADU permits issued in California grew nearly 19x from 2016 to 2022.

“Our homes are central to our lives. On average, most people in California live in their home for 17 years,” said CEO Mike McNamara, who co-founded Samara with Joe Gebbia, the co-founder of Airbnb. “Backyard is a powerful tool to help people get more mileage out of their properties, without the tax implications and hassles of a renovation. With our factory acquisition, I’m proud Samara can now integrate its world-class design, engineering capabilities, excellent customer experience and in-house manufacturing capacity.”

Backyard makes it possible for homeowners to add square footage to their properties faster and at a lower cost than traditional construction. Due to the company’s factory-built approach and focus on an efficient supply chain, Backyard can be installed in as few as seven months, including permitting, and with only 30 days of on-site labor—a far faster process compared to traditional construction methods. Samara currently offers Backyard in California, with plans to expand to other markets in the future.

About Samara Samara is on a mission to transform the way we live, starting with the home. The company’s first product, Backyard, is a high-quality accessory dwelling unit (ADU) that easily adds additional living space to your property. Backyard is designed to be flexible, giving homeowners more room for whatever they need—be it an in-law suite, home office, or rental unit. Samara uniquely manages Backyard from concept to completion, handling everything from product design and manufacturing to permitting, delivery, and installation. Started by CEO Mike McNamara and Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia, Samara is backed by Airbnb, Thrive Capital, 8VC and other leading corporate and venture investors. The company is headquartered in Redwood City, CA and owns a manufacturing facility in Mexicali, MX. For more information visit samara.com.

Father-son duo combines love, life lessons and soul in ‘Duets With Dad’ stage show

Soul singer Brian Owens (right) sings live with his father Thomas Owens (left) as part of their “Duets With Dad” stage show.

Fans of soul singer Brian Owens might assume that he grew up singing with his musical family as a child. The truth is that he didn’t start singing with his father, Thomas Owens, a successful singer and manager in his own right, until he was an adult.

Since Brian Owens uploaded a video of them singing “A Change Is Gonna Come” in 2013, as part of their “Duets With Dad” stage show, Brian and Thomas Owens have performed on the "Today" show and are set to open for Grammy Award-winning jazz-sensation Samara Joy.

Brian Owens told St. Louis on the Air that recording music and performing with his dad adds something special to the experience. “It’s something about getting older,” he said. “The project ‘Duets With Dad’ has taken a whole different perspective for both of us.”

Thomas Owens holds his youngest son, Brian.

Thomas Owens worked in the music industry before Brian Owens was born. Thomas Owens said performing with his son brings a different experience. “[Singing with Brian] is one of my million-dollar moments … just [performing] with him and having an opportunity to have a service to the audience and to sing about the relationship that we've had together as father and son,” he said.

Brian Owens added: “I think every performance that we do now is a step towards something bigger. I think getting the opportunity to open for Samara Joy is pointing in the direction of where things are heading.”
