Perfume River Cruise: Guide to Best Boat Tour in Hue Vietnam

perfume river cruise hue vietnam

Perfume River cruise is a popular activity in Hue, Vietnam. Different from other sightseeing rides, this experience is by a dragon boat that was used only for the king formerly. It might be a part of his hunting trips, a visit to ancestor tombs or a pilgrimage to holy sites in the upstream. After the fall of the Nguyen Dynasty, nobody forbade people to do the same. Today, travelers enjoy it so far in their own journey to explore the charms of Hue.

This article focuses on dragon boat cruises and the Perfume River, the largest and symbolic waterway of Hue. It’s not only an inclusion in guided city tours, but also day trips from Da Nang and Hoi An. The most popular ride is from the Hue center to Thien Mu Pagoda (the oldest Buddhist temple) or vice versa. While sitting on a plastic chair to unwind and get breezy air, the world is stunning to see from the boat.

About Perfume River in Hue Vietnam

Perfume river introduction.

The Perfume River (or Song Huong, Huong Giang) is a 30-km long river in Hue city. It begins from the confluence of Ta Trach and Huu Trach rivers, until flowing into the sea by Thuan An estuary. Along its banks, there are traditional and garden villages, emperor tombs, wooded hills, sacred temples, sand beaches, islands, fortresses, parks and promenades. Many top attractions in Hue stand in its waterfront, including the Imperial Citadel. Due to its pretty and peaceful beauty, this  has been a source of inspiration for many generations of artists, from painters, writers, poetries to musicians. Local people reveal that the Perfume River is greenish in the morning, changes to be yellowish in the noon, and purple in the afternoon. This vista is best seen from Thien Mu Pagoda.

Some facts about the Perfume River:

– Perfume River and Ngu Binh Mountain are representations for Hue’s nature. This couple is shortly called “Song Huong Nui Ngu” in Vietnamese.

– Perfume River is one of the cleanest (most unpolluted) rivers in Vietnam.

– During the period of Annam Protectorate, the land to the left of Perfume River was controlled by Nguyen emperors, and the opposite one is controlled by French. That’s why visitors can see two different architectural styles on the banks.

History of the Perfume River

Perfume River took its name when Nguyen Hoang Lord came to the area. As a land ruler, he wanted to find out a perfect location for the seat of his power. He cruised along the river by boat, burned the incense sticks and prayed to the God of Heaven. He said that he would choose the place where the sticks were burnt completely. And of course, the wish came true. Since then, the river has been called Song Huong or the “Perfume River” (Huong means perfume or incense stick in Vietnamese). However, many people think that the name originated from its nice aroma when prayers poured herb waters into the river in the festival.

Perfume River is a source of inspiration for Vietnamese artists over centuries. There are plenty of artworks created to praise its beauty and the emotions of people about that. Some novels and films made by foreign authors were given birth during and after the Vietnam War.

Perfume River Bridges

In Hue city center, there are 4 bridges spanning the Perfume River. Providing the passage from Hung Vuong St to Tran Hung Dao St, Iron Truong Tien Bridge is the oldest. It’s constructed from 1897 to 1899 by French engineers, in the reign of Thai Thai King (the 10 th ). Ever broken by communist bombing and typhoons, what people see today is a rebuilding in 1997. Being a gentle addition to scenic riverscape, this becomes an iconic building, an unofficial city’s emblem and a source of inspiration for artists up to date. During the evening, changeable color lights make it marvelous and more special than others. Lots of Vietnamese call its name wrong, popularly to Trang Tien (a street in Hanoi).

Truong Tien means “school and coin factory” because it connects a school and a coin factory at the time of its construction.

The second bridge in history was Da Vien Railway Bridge, built in 1908 and a part of trans-Vietnam railway. In 2012, a modern and nicely-designed road bridge was inaugurated, providing the shortest time to get from Hue Train Station to HW1A. From its pavilions, pedestrians can see pretty scenery to riverfronts and a part of the city. Between it and the iconic bridge, that is Phu Xuan Bridge. Called by locals “New Bridge”, official name of this simple bridge is same to a Vietnam’s capital from 1805 to 1832, meaning “richness and spring”.

Perfume River Islands

There are two rhombus-shaped islands on the Perfume River: Con Hen (“Claim Island”) and Con Da Vien. Con Da Vien is smaller, uninhabited and the other is home of 4,000 people. First matches between elephant and tiger were held in it before the Royal Arena was built in 1829. Later, a landscaped garden was established by Tu Duc and its current name is birthed. Today, nothing from the king’s period is left and there is only a French fountain tower and railway bridge named Da Vien. Opposite, the Claim Island is famous for its delicious com hen (claim rice, noodles) that the main ingredients are catched in the Perfume River.

According to the Feng shui, two islands on the Perfume River function to shelter the front of the Imperial Citadel from bad spirits and evils.

The Riverfronts

Between Da Vien bridges and Truong Tien bridge, expansive and lush parks lie along the Perfume River that are rarely seen in Vietnam. The left bank features a huge flagpole, octagonal pavilions amid gardens, a market, and grasslands. On the opposite side, there are French-style constructions by the shore, including museums, memorials, an art theatre, city hall, reddish schools and lots of statue parks. Together with big trees, blooming flowers, walking paths and pedestrian wooden bridges to view sunset, banks of the Perfume River are idyllic for strolls. From a boat, modern houses with busy streets are hidden away behind forested parks.

From Da Vien bridge to Tomb of Minh Mang, urban facilities disappear and by that, visitors can see a real Hue suburban and countryside. There are tranquil villages, garden houses, temples atop the hill, low mountains, corn fields and more. All are free from noise, hustle and bustle and large constructions. In other works, the sceneries along this portion are nearly unchanged over centuries. In some festivals, it’s stuck by boats carrying prayers and pilgrims.

The Best Time to Cruise the Perfume River

If aiming to sightsee, travelers should board when the sun is still up. During it, natural sceneries and historical buildings on banks of the Perfume River show their best. For a long ride like from downtown to the Tomb of Minh Mang emperor, it’s perfect to start in the morning. Visitors will have a lot of time to wander around, learn about history and photograph. The best short ride, from Thien Mu Pagoda to the city, is run in the sunset when the waters are golden. To witness performances of Ca Hue singing, the evening is only chance, available from 6 to 9.

On the other hand, the wet season from September to February features not a lot of sunny days and high rainfall. So, travelers should check the weather forecast in advance at this time, to avoid a rainy day to cruise the river. The view is not clear, and travelers may feel cold. From September to November, typhoons are formed and hit the area, causing strong winds, pouring rains and floods. No surprise, a boat ride is not recommended and even allowed to operate.

Perfume River Cruise Experience

A cruise by dragon boat along the Perfume River allows travelers to enjoy easy-on-the-eye sceneries, and see life of people from a different perspective. In the city core, it’s possible to expect landscaped promenades and parks dotted with pavilions, four bridges, a part of the Citadel on a bank and French colonial buildings on the other. This stretch of water becomes golden in the sunset and romantic after the last light fades. Booking a ride in the late afternoon if you’re a sunset lover, it’s really worth it. While on board, passengers can sit on a plastic chair by the window or in the bow, to feel the breeze.

After passing under the railway bridge, slices of life in the suburbs are provided. For example, locals use unpolluted water from the river to wash clothings, keep cows in grasslands or fishers catching clams by net. One of the most iconic Instagram pictures, the grandeur tower of Thien Mu Pagoda, is easily taken quickly after. From there to Minh Mang King’s mausoleum, the river is surrounded by more hills, true rural villages, corn fields on the mudflats and holy places (like famous Hon Chen Temple). Passengers feel most peaceful, relaxing vibes when the boat moves leisurely along this upstream part.

The boat owner often invites passengers to buy something for her, like clothings, souvenirs, postcards, etc. Because they can’t speak English, he/she gives a paper with English words to express what he/she wants to say.

Perfume River Cruise at Night

Ca hue (hue singing) cruise.

After the sunset, travelers have a special Perfume River cruise experience. It includes a ride to view shimmering riverfronts at night and performances of Ca Hue singing, a local folk entertainment. About the first highlight, bridges with color-changing lights and graceful buildings on the waterfronts are reasons to make people book it. Cooler temperature is a plus point. During traditional festivals, plenty of candle lanterns are dropped down the river, placing on its water innumerable shimmering lights. A difference to day cruises is the folk songs that are performed by local ladies wearing traditional long dresses (ao dai). Hue’s local accents, unique rhythm and lyrics content, accompanied by 5 musical instructions, are what makes this art great to know. To book a cruise with singers, travelers can go to the hotel reception or nearest tour operator, or walk straight to Toa Kham pier.

Fact: Ca Hue singing is on the road map to be a Unesco-listed intangible cultural heritage, the second in Hue.

Dinner Cruise

HRS cruise is the premium choice for a Perfume River cruise after it’s dark. Not just a ride to get sight of fantastic waterfronts and bridges, this is also a fine dining experience. Perfume River Cruise – Boats & Piers

Dragon boats.

Dragon boats were exclusively used by the emperors and members of their family during the Nguyen Dynasty. Besides viewing beautiful sceneries along the Perfume River, they aimed to visit sacred temples and imperial tombs in its upstream. After the abdication of the last king, the dragon boat cruise tradition continues up to date. In piers nowadays, travelers can see two types of boat: the bigger one with two heads of dragon, and the smaller one with a head of dragon only. Number of seats is more and the price is higher if booking the first type. To decorate, locals use colors representing the Five-elements, including yellow (“earth”), red (“fire”), blue (“water”), green (“wood”) and white (“metal”).

Ben Toa Kham Pier

This 300 meters-long quay (pier) is between the Truong Tien Bridge and Ben Toa Kham Café. Both small and large dragon boats docking there to choose from. It’s easy to meet an owner and deal with the prices if traveling by yourself. Parking lots are near the bridge and at the end of Doi Cung St. The fee is 5,000 VND for a bike. Toa Kham is a short phrase of “Toa Kham Su Trung Ky” meaning the Hall for Resident-Superior of Annam (French Protectorate). Daily, lots of locals come here to cool off and do exercise.

Toa Kham Pier is closest to Hue Walking Street, the main international tourist area in the city. Only a few walks are required to get from hotels, restaurants and bars from there to it.

Ben So 5 Le Loi Pier

At the end of a road between Azerai La Residence Hue and Ho Chi Minh Museum, this pier is the nearest dragon boat docking area to Hue train station. Not many choices are there to select, but self-guided travelers may have a good deal because there are a few people coming to book during the day. Guests from nearby hotels are still the major passengers for boarding, for example.

Thanks to the beginning of Dien Bien Phu St, So 5 Le Loi Pier is the best choice to land after leaving Thien Mu Pagoda and imperial tombs are next places.

Huong Giang Hotel Pier

At the crossroad of Le Loi – Nguyen Cong Tru St, this small pier has several dragon boats. Both upstream and downstream rides are not too busy, because it’s near Toa Kham Pier where there are so many more choices.

Nghinh Luong Dinh Pavillion Pier

This is the official boat station of the Imperial City where the kings lived, so his Perfume River cruises always boarded here. Today, there is only a luxury boat docking in it, serving prime rides and dining experiences. If planning to get to Thien Mu Pagoda from the Citadel by common dragon boat, travelers need to book and set up time to meet up in advance. In reverse, a 750-meters walk is required to start the visit to the best of Citadel after landing.

Perfume River Cruise – Routes & Destinations

Dragon boat to thien mu pagoda.

It takes around 30 minutes to get to Thien Mu Pagoda from the city centre (Toa Kham pier) by dragon boat, and vice versa. If boarding/landing in Ben so 5 Le Loi pier, only 20 minutes needed. Because of being shorter, passengers only pass under two Da Vien bridges, instead of 4 like the longer ride. The best time to go upstream is the morning when the temperature doesn’t increase yet. About the downstream voyage, the sunset is definitely best. Travellers can expect a really mesmerizing beauty of nature in this last appearance of the sun. In later times, lights on the bridges, waterfronts, and the city are good to see.

The Upstream Cruise – Hon Chen Temple & Tomb of Minh Mang

There are many religious and imperial buildings constructed upstream of the Perfume River. Except Thien Mu Pagoda, travellers can take a cruise and stop to sightsee Hon Chen Temple where the Goddess of Mother is worshiped or Tomb of Minh Mang, the 2 nd  king of the dynasty. Travel time is often one day in guided tours, to allow travellers explore with relaxation. During the ride, the rural scenery is another highlight, including wooded gentle hills, corn fields, pomelo gardens, traditional villages and scenes of local daily lives.

Perfume River Cruise by Yourself

To start your Perfume River cruise, you need to go to the nearest pier first. If staying in/near walking streets, it’s Ben Toa Kham (close to Truong Tien Bridge), and near the train station, the pier by Azerai La Residence Hotel is the only choice. There, asking directly to boat owners the cost (read reasonable range of price below). Solo travellers, couples, and families, should pay a small boat. Popular stops to sightsee are Thien Mu Pagoda (read travel guide  here ), Hon Chen Temple and Tomb of Minh Mang (read travel guide  here ). In the mausoleum, local eateries are available there to have foods and drinks. What You Need to Know about Hương River in Hue, Vietnam

Rachel Tran

A visitor to Hue once remarked after his vacation here: “A visit to Hue would not be complete without a boat excursion on the gentle Perfume River, or else you cannot feel the romance of Hue”. The Perfume River (Vietnamese: Sông Hương or Hương Giang) is a river that crosses the capital city of Hue , in the central Vietnamese province of Thua Thien Hue. Perfume River or Huong River is around 80 kilometers long, and owes its name to the fact that it flows through many forests of aromatic plants before reaching Hue, bringing with it a pure and fresh aroma.

The Origin of Perfume River

Dragon boats lined up on the Perfume River at sunset

The Perfume River has two sources, both of which begin in the Truong Son Mountain range and meet at Bang Lang Fork. The Ta Trach (Left Tributary) originates in the Truong Dong mountains and flows northwest towards Bang Lang Fork. The shorter Huu Trach (Right Tributary) flows through the Tuan ferry, landing towards Bang Lang Fork.

Then it flows in south-north direction passing the temples of Hon Chen and Ngoc Tran, and  turns north-west, meandering through the Nguyet Bieu and Luong Quan plains. From this, the River then continuously flows int the north-east direction to Hue city, only an echo of Truong Son mountain, and passes the rest place of the Nguyen Emperors. The river of green water continues its itinerary, passing Hen Islet and various villages, crossing the Sinh junction, which is known as the capital of ancient Chau Hoa, before emptying into the Tam Giang Lagoon .

From Bang Lang to Thuan An estuary, the Perfume River is 30 km long and runs very slowly (as the river level is not much above sea level). The Perfume River darkens as it winds along the foot of Ngoc Tran Mountain – home of the Jade Cup Temple – where there is a very deep abyss.

Artist Inspiration of Huong River

Artist Inspiration of Huong River

The poetic romantic Perfume River is the deep inspirations to numerous artists, poets, and composers;

                                             “Who turns to Hue

Who comes back to Ngu Mount

Who comes back to Huong River

                                                  The river water never sinks

Ngu Mount birds fly back to friends

Whoever are children of Hue remember to return…”

are the beautiful lyrics of a famous song, “Who comes to Hue”, written by Duy Khanh. In the autumn, flowers from orchards upriver from Hue fall into the water, giving the river a perfume-like aroma, and a beautiful poetic view. I have asked several artists about the reason for their inspiring love for Perfume River, and received nearly the same answer: “Well, my inspiration derives from the pure water, the fascinating landscape, and the gentle bridge over the river”.

What to Do at Perfume River?

Boat along the river

1. Boat along the River

Today, travellers coming to Hue could not miss a while of boating along the river . Most of them admit that this is one of the most beautiful and extremely splendid riverside landscape (especially at night when lights are on) that they have ever visited!

2. Visit Some Nearby Hue Attractions

As mentioned, the river flows through a series of beauty-spots, taking visitors to every corner of the ancient citadel when you travel by boat. Along the river, you can visit Da Vien , Phu Xuan , and Truong Tien Bridge , come to the Tomb of Minh Mang , Hon Chen Shrine , Thien Mu Pagoda , and finally to bathe in the sea. Upstream, at the Tomb of Thien Tho , you can hear the rustling of the pine tree, which may help you become a… poet!

When the night comes, the surface of the river glistens under the moonlight, and the songs of the boat rowers can be heard breaking the silence. Just come here and you will feel the pure atmosphere of romance and beauty!

As one of the most popular attractions in Hue, a boat ride or cruise on the Huong River in Hue is included in a lot of classic Hue city tours or day trips. Pick the most suitable itinerary for you and start exploring the beauty of this poetic river and city today!

We did a boat tour with our wonderful, friendly, and knowledgeable guide Ngo Thi Kim Hong (she let us call her Rose), seeing beautiful temples, pagodas, and tombs, and COULD NOT HAVE BEEN HAPPIER WITH THE TRIP. If you have the chance, BOOK RIGHT NOW!

We started with a welcome in their office, before a quick car ride up to the first tomb. Rose took us around and explained everything in just the right amount of detail. (Some tours overload you with information that you don’t really need). She also took fantastic pictures of us and recommended good spots to pose.

We then boarded a dragon boat crewed by a lovely older couple and proceeded downriver for a 2-hour cruise, stopping along the way at another temple and a pagoda. Rose chatted with us the whole time, explaining the sights, and telling us all about Vietnam and Vietnamese and Hue culture.

We had the option to stop by Dong Ba market (we declined because we had seen it already, but it is 100% worth seeing), and then proceeded to a lovely light dinner.

It was a wonderful, relaxing, and beautiful day with amazing sights and friendly people. We were totally satisfied and if we could give the tour 10 stars, we would!

Kelvin C

Booked a one-day tour along the Perfume River, Thien Mu Pagoda, Hon Chen Temple and the Ming Manh Tomb. My guide, Ms Ngo Thi Kim Hong (Rose), was so friendly and approachable from the start when picking me up from the hotel. We had a lovely chartered boat ride down the river where she shared more about Hue and Vietnam (and also about our respective families). She made me feel so comfortable the entire trip and took many nice photographs for me. The company also arranged a lovely dinner for me at a local restaurant and it was satisfyingly good. I would definitely recommend Explore Vietnam Travel and Ms Ngo to anyone who wants to come to Hue City.

Perfume River

How To Explore Perfume River In The Most Experienced Way?

perfume river cruise hue vietnam

The Perfume River or Huong River is a symbol of Hue Imperial City, a critical part of Feng Shui in the Nguyen Dynasty’s architecture. Not only has this river become the great inspiration for a myriad of poets and musicians to compose but also played a crucial part in the daily life of the locals as well as the development of the locality.

The poetic beauty of the Perfume River Vietnam

Perfume river boat trip - must-try experience in hue city, exciting experiences on a perfume river cruise tour, travel agencies offer a dragon boat tour on huong river.

perfume river

Hue City is not only charming with ancient pagodas, temples, citadels, royal tombs,... but also famous for the romantic Perfume River . This river is regarded as an iconic image of Hue Poetic City, the soul, and spirit of the local people, making it a very popular tourist magnet that every visitor would like to pay a visit to once traveling to Hue City .

huong river

Stunning beauty of the river - Source: @Minh An

According to many different ancient documents, the Huong River has various names. Particularly, it was mentioned as the Linh River in the book “Du dia chi” by Nguyen Trai, a great poet in 1435. In the book of “O chau can luc” by Duong Van An in 1555, the river got the name of the Kim Tra River (the great river of Kim Tra). The famous 18-century poet, governmental official and encyclopedist called it the Huong Tra river in the book of “Phu bien tap luc”. Other names of the Perfume River in Hue can be mentioned as Lo Dung River, Dinh Rive, and Yen Luc River.

The river stretches around 140km and has an area of 2,830km2, accounting for nearly three-fifths of the province's area. The Huong River Hue City system has three main tributaries: the Bo River, Huu Trach River, and Ta Trach River, which originate in the mid-mountain area of A Luoi and Nam Dong Districts, flowing through Phong Dien, Huong Tra, and Nam Dong Districts, Hue City, and Huong Thuy district, finally flowing into Tam Giang Lagoon.

The clear, emerald Perfume River mirrors the images of lush tree bushes on both sides of the river, blue sky with seas of incredible white clouds, and the charming Trang Tien Bridge. Near the river are architectural works and colorful blossoms, which contribute to making the picture of the river more poetic and attractive. The Huong River Vietnam river seems quiet and a bit “serene” at sunset when the sun goes down, and gradually hides after high mountains, so there are a few light sun rays left. The entire area here is cloaked with warm, yellow, and orange colors, creating a subtle quiet atmosphere.

This may be the reason why Hue is known as the “sad city”. However, the Perfume River in Vietnam becomes glorious in the nightfall with colorful lights on the bridge of Trang Tien, reflecting on the water surface, which is amazingly attractive. The silence is likely to be broken by the noise of rowing Dragon boats and Hue’s traditional folk music echoing in the vast space. More specially, the Huong River appears more charming during festivals, when the water surface is awakened with hundreds of twinkling lanterns.

The Perfume River in Hue is also considered the river of festivals because there are numerous festivals closely associated with Hue’s rich culture held on the river such as the festival of releasing floating lotus-shaped paper lanterns, the Hon Chen festival, the traditional boat racing festival, etc.

Dragon boats on the river - Source: Internet

The experience of cruising a stunning dragon boat on the Song Huong River is a must for any visitor to admire the utmost beauty of the river as well as Hue City. The dragon boat goes slowly along the waterway, passing the ancient dragon boat station of the emperors under the Nguyen Dynasty, Minh Mang Tomb , the iconic Trang Tien Bridge, Thien Mu Pagoda - the most sacred one in Hue City, Hon Chen Palace,...

One of the most unique activities during a Perfume River boat trip is Ca Hue, the combination of two musical genres: folk music and Hue royal court. The beautiful voices of Hue women echo in the vast quiet space in the middle of the river, which makes your soul more “gentle” than ever.

In addition, you get to sample Hue’s traditional specialties right on the boat. Unlike in the restaurants or hotels, enjoying food during the boat ride is totally different and unique because you can choose some options such as a basic dinner, a “loyal” dinner, or a royal banquet. The basic dinner in a Perfume River cruise tour includes specialties of the ancient capital such as chicken soup, spring rolls, and steamed squid, etc.

The menu of royal dinner seems a bit more luxurious and the dishes are meticulously garnished such as rice wrapped in lotus leaves, seafood soup, “nậm” cake, “nem công chả phượng” (royal phoenix rolls). The royal banquet helps you to fully enjoy the feast of the kings in the past with the menu imbued with Hue royal cuisine, typically luxurious appetizers, Cung Dinh grilled chicken, Cung Dinh rice, and Hue royal tea.

Trang Tien Bridge - Perfume River

Duyen's keen on travelling and exploring new places. By travelling, she get better at comfortable. It opens up the knowledge door for her as well.

Perfume River

Huong River or Perfume River is a romantic and poetic one which crosses Hue Old Capital City. It flows between the city of Hue and divides the city into two parts: North and South Perfume River.

Boat trip on Perfume River

How Perfume River is unique?

Once visiting Hue city, it’ll be a miss when not making a dragon cruise trip upstream or downstream the river. A sizeable number of individuals still live in ships on the Perfume River and the waterways of Hue like Dong Ba and Hen islet. Despite the government efforts to resolve them everywhere. And thanks for this arrangement, it looks nicer than for tourism now.

It is possible to combine them, if only briefly, by simply taking a boat trip. And have a puttering about in front of the citadel on a misty Hue morning, watching the slow bustle of river life.

Perfume River

A day’s angling on the Perfume River is a fantastic way to soak up some of the air of Hue City. And do a bit gentle sightseeing away from the roads. The boat trip takes you to Thien Mu Pagoda, Hon Chen Temple and the many rewarding mausoleums. Typically they are Tu Duc and Minh Mang Mausoleum.

Nevertheless, if you wish to visit some of the others or invest more time researching, it is often possible to take a bike on the boat. And then ride bicycle back to Hue city. However, please double check this when you book the trip.

It is worth a visit Perfume River

Most Hue travel agents and hotels offer river tours on Perfume River. It starts at $3 per person for share group boat only, for example, but no guide. For better enjoyment it is recommended you take a private boat with a guide to get deeply information of Perfume River. Depend on the site the dragon boat lead to the cost is from 10 USD/boat to 25 USD/boat

However, all entrance fees are additional. The entrance fee may work out expensive at 5 USD/per person per mausoleum. Or hone your bargaining skills in the Toa Kham boat dock beside the Trang Tien Bridge to have a boat trip.

Thien Mu pagoda

The main termination is the Thien Mu Pagoda that takes about 25 minutes to attain. From there, the boat can go to Minh Mang Tomb that takes about two hours. There are unlikely views all the way wherein as you land on the river. You rest on your seat and feel the cool breeze blowing alongside the boat. And you can look out to the different water buffaloes on the riverbank.

An extra romantic scene may be to embark inside the late mid-day to view two bank river on a dragon boat. While sipping champagne at sunset, Perfume River will give you an enjoyment of the sun down through the mountain differentlt. It is also a speciality of Hue when see the sunset over the river nowhere can have the purple color. This scene you can see on the summer time.

In the evening, you can take a dragon boat round way the Truong Tien and Phu Xuan bridges to enjoy Hue folk song. In addition, you can book a Royal Dinner on boat to get back the past of King & Queen experience. It will be an memory for your time in Hue city which dragon boat trip brings to you.

Another reason is that, besides the riverbank, there is a long-standing village called Thuy Xuan Incense Village. The village has existed for about two hundred years of history.

Thuy Xuan Incense Village produces and uses numerous types of natural ingredients. They are cinnamon, lemongrass, sandalwoods, jasmine, etc. Furthermore, pure freshwater from the river is the main product used for making incense and frankincense.

The villagers mix the water and trees’ ingredients like fragrance, glue, and sawdust. That creates the river’s great gentle smell. And the name “Perfume River” has been used until now.

The history of the Dragon Boat

As a city full of historical and cultural aspects, Hue Citadel used to be the imperial capital of 13 Emperors under Nguyen Dynasty . Back in the old days of Hue’s ancient city, dragon boats were considered the means for the king’s entertainment to enjoy the spectacular river view.

Until now, the Hue people still preserve the cultural value of dragon boat trips on the Perfume River. And they develop it to be a service for tourists to experience and boost tourism nowadays.

Best time for the Dragon boat trip

Hue weather is divided into two seasons: the rainy season ( October to February) and the dry season ( March to September) . Depending on your purpose, you can select the best time for the dragon boat trip.

Between October to February, it is rainy in Hue city. There is some dragon boat Hue still working these days. However, it is so limited because of the safety of tourists.

  • Note: We recommend you take a dragon boat trip from  5:00 to watch the sunrise. Furthermore, if you would like to admire the sunset on the Perfume River, you should come at 17:00.
