PGA TOUR Entertainment Preps for 1,000 Hours of Live Players Championship Coverage

Every shot by 154 players will be covered by 120 cameras on the course.

By Ken Kerschbaumer, Editorial Director Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - 3:59 pm Print This Story | Subscribe

Story Highlights

If you’re looking for a history-making moment in sports production, look no further than this weekend’s The Players Championship from TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. It’s shaping up to be the largest golf production ever for a single weekend event.

“This will be the most coverage of any golf tournament ever, and, with 154 players, we will have 52 groups,” says Mike Raimondo, senior director, media asset management and broadcast innovation, PGA TOUR , noting that 120 cameras will be on the course to cover the groups. “We scrambled a little bit to make sure that we had everything covered and all the technical resources, but we didn’t cut back on any of that kind of stuff. We just had to tweak our hardware a little bit to make that work.”

pga tour entertainment staff

PGA TOUR Entertainment’s Every Shot Live will be produced in the compound at TPC Sawgrass but most of the production will be done in the UK.

PGA TOUR Entertainment will show every shot live (approximately 750 hours). Layer in 240 hours of additional content, and NBC Sports and Golf Channel will have wall-to-wall coverage, a cornucopia of more than 1,000 hours of live coverage.

“From a live perspective, we are back to normal as far as staffing, and we didn’t cut any corners,” says Greg Hopfe, VP/executive producer, PGA TOUR Entertainment . “We have spread people out more to make sure people are safe.”

From a content perspective, says Dave Dukes, senior director, technical operations, PGA TOUR Entertainment , the viewer will have plenty to choose from. “It’s full on, and we will obviously be able to do it for more than the one day we had last year.”

The production of Every Shot Live begins in NEP Supershooter CBS B, C, and D units in the compound, but it extends thousands of miles away. As was done last year, each group will be produced by a team of Hawk-Eye operators located at Hawk-Eye headquarters in Basingstoke, UK.

According to Dukes, the Hawk-Eye interface allows the operator to simply hit a button to switch all the camera feeds from one hole to the next. Every hole has a minimum of three static cameras available to the production teams, in addition to the camera feeds that NBC and Golf Channel use for coverage. As was done last year, those offsite professionals will be looking at proxies of the high-resolution material that never leaves the TPC Sawgrass compound.

pga tour entertainment staff

The front-bench area in the compound where Every Shot Live will be produced.

Shotlink data was also incorporated with each feed, along with hole flyovers and trace.

“On course, the live-camera and audio guys work the same as last year, but the entire production is done offsite,” says Raimondo. “The only people onsite will be the technical people who make sure the equipment is up, running, and connected properly.”

One step taken this year to lessen the number of people onsite is that all nine Trackman operators who were onsite last year will operate out of Trackman headquarters in Phoenix. Both the Hawk-Eye and Trackman teams will be tied into the compound via circuits from The Switch, which will be tied into the D unit (three video shaders will also be in the D unit).

“On the transmission side, every single piece of Every Shot Live goes straight into AWS,” says Raimondo. “There are 52 streams into AWS Media Connect, and, from there, it gets distributed domestically and internationally.

“Last year,” he continues, “we just did 24 streams for 24 groups in the morning, and then the same streams would be used for the afternoon groups. But there were too many close calls from an overlap standpoint, and, in 2019, 11 groups overlapped. We kind of lucked out last year and didn’t want to take the chance this year. Now we have a dedicated stream per group.”

Domestically, those streams will be available via NBC Sports Gold. Seven international-rights partners are taking either a handful or all of the streams.

Another improvement over last year is that bandwidth has been reduced because all the streams go to AWS rather than multiple locations.

Adds Dukes, “On the international side, using AWS allows us a lot of flexibility to service our international partners in various ways. Some won’t take all 52 streams, and the nice thing about having all of it in Media Connect is that we can streamline the process of delivering individual streams to partners.”

According to Raimondo, partners that use AWS Media Connect can simply be given access by PGA TOUR Entertainment and can take what they need.

“If they want something in a specific format,” he explains, “we can spin it off and get them what they need. And then there are others who don’t have Media Connect, and we basically are their CDN spun up in an AWS cloud. They put the URLs on their website or app, and the flexibility seems to be endless. No matter what our partners asked for, we can accommodate it.”

The Foundation

The efforts this week enable PGA TOUR Entertainment to continue to add more value to the rights by making it easier for international-rights holders to give golf fans in their country the content they want most.

“They ask for specific players or groups,” says Raimondo, “and we are going to start seeing more localizing of content.”

AWS is also able to bring more efficiency to non-live workflows for highlights and speed rounds. “We send the streams through our AI engine,” Raimondo explains, “and WSC Sports automatically creates all of the highlights for us as it clips every shot and distributes them to our platform. That allows us to create a speed round for each golfer as soon as their round is over. By the end of Thursday, we will basically have 154 speed rounds, and our international partners have asked for those as well.”

pga tour entertainment staff

PGA TOURCast gives fans complete control over highlights, shot data, and more.

The PGA TOURCast platform is where all the innovation comes together: video clips of each shot are assembled with a graphical representation of each hole and 3D trails of each shot. The first step is to choose a hole, which brings up a 3D representation of it, and the user can fly around it virtually. A player is selected via dropdown menu listing each of the shots. When the user clicks on a shot icon, a video window pops up to show the shot, and tracking data indicates where the shot went on the 3D graphical representation of the hole. Club-head speed, ball speed, smash factor, spin rate, and apex are also displayed.

“We ingest every stream, the AI cuts it, and then we layer it into our TOURCast 3D product,” says Eric Hanson, senior director, digital product development, PGA TOUR . “The cool thing about it is, there’s no people running it: it’s all automated on the backend. By the end of the tournament, we will have over 32,000 clips automatically put into TOURCast.”

Hanson notes that the clips are probably the biggest source of content consumption on PGATour.com and the app.

“There are guys at the bottom of the leaderboard who get a decent amount of video views,” he explains. “There’s a long-tail effect because there are so many players [in whom interest may be small] but, if you combine that interest, you get a large amount of interest across the fan base.”

Hanson cites Norway’s Victor Hovland as a prime example of the kind of player whose popularity back home justifies all the efforts around personalization and localization.

“They may be small names on the PGA TOUR, but they are really big names in their home country,” Hanson notes. “People follow them shot by shot and will consume as much content as we give them. It’s great for us because they are super-dedicated.”

More than ever, technology is transforming PGA TOUR Entertainment, opening up new ways for rightsholders to get incremental value out of those rights, new ways for its own teams to repurpose content easily, and much more.

“Not only do we have live content,” says Raimondo, “but we have instant access to all content, so every one of our content creators can go into the system and clip anything they want.”

For a sport that traditionally has been just about the hardest to broadcast because of all the simultaneous play, nirvana, for golf fans in particular, has arrived.

“There’s so much out there, and all of it is happening at the same time,” says Dukes. “No one is going to consume 100% of this, but it allows our fans to have the choice to watch what they want to watch, where they want to watch, and on whatever device they want to watch it. The key is supporting our fans.”

Wait, There’s More…

Along with every shot live, PGA TOUR Entertainment will deliver four days of featured-group coverage of two groups simultaneously. That coverage will be produced from a control room at PGA TOUR Entertainment’s St. Augustine, FL, facility, with separate featured-hole coverage of the 12th and 17th holes produced onsite.

“That will be used for the featured groups and will lessen the amount of people at the course,” says Hopfe. “That is an example of how we thought about things for social distancing.”

Also produced will be a Shotlink data channel, which layers in performance data about how a player typically does in a given situation, and a Launch Pad channel from the 14th hole exclusive to DirecTV.

“[The former is] an instruction-based channel where we use super-slo-mo cameras and a crane with an SMT graphics grid so our analysts can break down the swing,” says Hopfe. “It’s very much for the instructional geek.”

PGA TOUR Entertainment will also create a 22-hour world feed out of its St. Augustine facility.

“We do that every week for the tour,” says Hopfe. “The team will bring in the NBC feed and add over 100 shots a day during the commercial breaks. We have 10 NBC cameras coming into the building, so we can record what we will show when NBC goes to break. We can replay a significant number of shots to fill the breaks.”

The efforts at The Players Championship are a very strong indication of the opportunities that lie ahead with respect to sports production and distribution. The biggest obstacle to a “bigger” show has often been things like compound space and travel budget, and decentralized production removes those barriers. And using the cloud for distribution enables the PGA TOUR Entertainment team to more easily give rightsholders exactly what they want, ultimately increasing the value of the rights for current and future rightsholders.

“Every Shot Live will continue to scale,” adds Raimondo, “and the cost will end up going down. The goal for us is to grow naturally from one event to — eventually, as technology improves and the cost goes down — more events.”

Pga tour enterprises launched with nine players, including tiger woods, on board of directors, share this article.

The newly formed PGA Tour Enterprises announced its first board of directors on Wednesday.

The 13-member board has nine PGA Tour Directors, approved by the Tour’s Policy Board, and four Strategic Sports Group Directors, appointed by the SSG investor group. This board will lead all commercial activities related to the PGA Tour and will focus on driving fan engagement and growth, as well as developing new media, sponsorship and commercial opportunities.

All six current Player Directors from the Tour Policy Board will simultaneously serve on the Tour Enterprises Board of Directors: Patrick Cantlay, Peter Malnati, Adam Scott, Webb Simpson, Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods.

The more significant news was the naming of retired Tour pro Joe Ogilvie to the board.

“Given the significant time investment required from the players to serve on both Boards – and as part of the Tour’s governance review – the Player Directors identified the benefit of having a ‘Director Liaison’ on both Boards as well,” the Tour said in a news release. “Ogilvie will join the PGA Tour Policy Board and the PGA Tour Enterprises Board of Directors.

Joe Gorder, who serves as an Independent Director on the Tour Policy Board, and PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan round out the Tour representation on the Enterprises Board. Monahan will serve as the CEO of Enterprises, and Woods will serve as the Vice Chairman of the Board.

As announced in January, SSG – a consortium of American sports team owners led by Fenway Sports Group – joined PGA Tour Enterprises as a minority investor, providing an initial $1.5 billion of capital that will “unlock investment opportunities to grow the Tour and enhance the game of golf around the world.”

The four SSG Directors will be:

  • John W. Henry, Principal, Fenway Sports Group; Manager, Strategic Sports Group
  • Arthur M. Blank, Co-Founder, Home Depot; Owner and Chairman, AMB Sports and Entertainment (Atlanta Falcons, Atlanta United, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta Drive GC, PGA Tour Superstore)
  • Andrew B. Cohen, Chief Investment Officer and Co-Founder, Cohen Private Ventures; Vice Chairman, New York Mets
  • Sam Kennedy, Partner/CEO, Fenway Sports Group; President & CEO, Boston Red Sox

The PGA Tour Enterprises Board will elect a chairman at an upcoming meeting.

“Today’s announcement is another milestone for our organization, as I believe we have arrived at a PGA Tour Enterprise’s Board of Directors with the right composition, expertise and balance necessary to take our organization into the future,” said Monahan. “Our current and former players will provide essential insight into our members’ priorities and needs. And we welcome key SSG members to the leadership team, whose exceptional track records and achievements in global professional sports will lend a wealth of knowledge into the opportunities ahead for the PGA Tour. Their expertise will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in the success and growth of our commercial initiatives.

“It’s an opportunity for us to shape something special that will not only create more value for the PGA Tour, but will also benefit and grow our fanbase,” the Player Directors and Liaison Director said in a joint statement.  “We’re ready to get started.”

“Our role on the Enterprises board will focus on hearing Player Director ideas and working alongside them to ensure the sport’s commercial growth occurs in a way that creates the best possible product for fans,” said Henry. “All of us at Strategic Sports Group see a bright future for the PGA Tour and the constitution of the Enterprises Board is an important first step in realizing that future.”

In addition to Ogilvie’s forthcoming appointment, Monahan will be a voting member as well, which will expand that Policy Board from 12 to 14.

NBC Golf officially announces staff changes for 2023 PGA Tour coverage

Dan Hicks and Paul Azinger are back in the lead chairs at NBC.

New year, new NBC … or something like that.

On Tuesday afternoon, the network officially announced its PGA Tour broadcast lineup for 2023, confirming a slew of staffing changes that had been reported in recent weeks. The network’s announcement comes ahead of this weekend’s Sentry Tournament of Champions , the first broadcast coverage of the new calendar year for NBC.

Smylie Kaufman and Brad Faxon lead the charge among NBC’s new hires, joining the network in on-course analyst and “hole announcer” roles, respectively. Despite joining the network anew in 2023, Faxon and Kaufman bring a wealth of experience to NBC, rejoining the network after stints in recent years. Kaufman worked most recently with NBC this past season, serving as an on-course analyst for the network’s USGA championship coverage, among other events in 2022. Faxon was with the network in the early 2010s but left for FOX’s USGA Championship coverage in 2015. He has worked in various media roles, including as a host for SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio, since NBC purchased back the USGA rights from FOX in 2020.

In addition to Kaufman and Faxon’s hirings, the network announced the promotions of longtime analyst Curt Byrum and interviewers Damon Hack and Cara Banks. Byrum, who will be one of the network’s “hole announcers” in 2023, enters his coverage of the men’s game after years in the same role for the network’s LPGA coverage; while Hack and Banks elevate into the role vacated by Kathryn Tappen.

The changes come after the network did not renew the contracts of longtime analysts Gary Koch and Roger Maltbie , among other staffers, amid a reported $1 billion in NBCUniversal budget cuts. Koch and Maltbie finished their NBC careers with a warm on-air serenade during December’s PNC Championship.

The top of the ticket for NBC remains largely unchanged, per the network’s release. Longtime play-by-play man Dan Hicks will continue to serve alongside lead analyst Paul Azinger, and both men will be joined by on-course analysts John Wood, Notah Begay and Arron Oberholser. (Wood, in particular, has been a revelation, helping to offset the loss of fellow caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay as he returned to Justin Thomas’ bag in early 2022.)

Coverage for the 2023 season will begin for NBC on Thursday evening.

Since leaving Texas Tech to head to the pros, Ludvig Aberg has made an instant splash on the PGA Tour. Here are five things to know about one of the newest names in golf...

First major appearance

The Masters was the first major appearance of Aberg’s career. After going over par on Thursday (+1), the 24-year-old put together three solid rounds and finished second at 7-under behind Scottie Scheffler.

How he got here

After a pair of dominant seasons at Texas Tech , Aberg finished No. 1 in the 2023 PGA Tour University Ranking. The distinction earned the Eslov, Sweden native PGA Tour membership for the remainder of 2023 season as well as the 2024 season. He was also ranked as the world’s No. 1 amateur.

Texas Tech accolades

Aberg won just about every major award college golf had to offer.

As a senior, he swept the Jack Nicklaus Award, the Fred Haskins Award and the Ben Hogan Award. He joined John Rahm as the only player to repeat as the winner of the Ben Hogan Award.

He won a program-record eight times while at Texas Tech, and became the first golfer to win back-to-back Big 12 Conference Championship titles in both 2022 and 2023.

Ryder Cup participant

Putting a stamp on his rapid rise in the golf world , Aberg earned a spot on Europe’s Ryder Cup team last year just three months after turning professional.

First PGA Tour win

A few months later, Aberg added to his astonishing rookie season when he won the RSM Classic in Nov. 2023, his first PGA Tour title to go along with a European tour victory and a winning debut in the Ryder Cup .

Who has the most career wins on the PGA Tour ? Let's examine the five winningest golfers in PGA Tour history and their incredible trophy cases.

Tiger Woods , 82 WINS

With a victory at the Zozo Championship on Oct. 27, 2019, Woods won his 82nd PGA Tour victory, tying the record held by Sam Snead. His first PGA Tour win came 23 years earlier, on Oct. 6, 1996, at the Las Vegas Invitational. In Woods' fifth start as a pro, he beat Davis Love III in a sudden-death playoff. Woods holds the record for most consecutive weeks as the No. 1 golfer in the world and the record for most total weeks at No. 1. Woods is an 11-time PGA Player of the Year, which is also a record. He won 15 major championships, trailing only Jack Nicklaus' 18. Woods was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2021. For more on Woods' decades-long dominance, check out this breakdown of his PGA Tour victories .

Sam Snead , 82 WINS

Snead's longevity was extremely impressive, as his career spanned 30 years and he competed well into his 60s. In the 1965 Greater Greensboro Open, the 52-year-old became the oldest golfer to win a PGA Tour tournament -- a record he still holds today. Snead won 82 PGA Tour events and seven majors. He was the PGA Golfer of the Year in 1949 and a three-time PGA Tour money list winner. He earned the PGA Tour's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998 and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

Jack Nicklaus , 73 WINS

Jack Nicklaus was widely regarded as the greatest golfer in the world during the 1960s and 1970s. He continued winning majors in the 1980s - with his final victory coming at 46 years old. Nicklaus holds the record for most major championships (18) and most Masters (six), and he's tied for the most PGA Championships (five) and U.S. Opens (four). "The Golden Bear" also finished as a runner-up 19 times in majors. From 1970 to 1979, Nicklaus never finished worse than eighth at the Masters. In 44 majors over that span, he missed just one cut. Nicklaus was a five-time PGA Player of the Year and the PGA Tour's money list winner 8 times. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

Ben Hogan , 64 WINS

Hogan won nine majors -- tied for fourth most all time -- and he's one of only five golfers to win all four major championships. Hogan was a four-time PGA Player of the Year. In 1943, Hogan was drafted and joined the U.S. Army and over the next three years, he rose to the rank of second lieutenant. In 1946, he returned to the PGA Tour and won 13 events. Hogan was named the AP's Male Athlete of the Year in 1953 and inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974.

Arnold Palmer , 62 WINS

Palmer was a fan favorite who helped golf skyrocket in popularity. He won seven majors -- with all his victories coming between 1958 and 1964 -- and he was the first golfer to win four Masters. Palmer was a two-time PGA Player of the Year and a four-time PGA Tour money list winner. He earned the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. Palmer also launched many products, owned and designed golf courses, and co-founded The Golf Channel.

Opinion: PGA Tour needs to embrace LIV Golf, have young golfers act like Mickelson, Trevino

One of the many reasons the PGA Tour is bleeding viewers was offered up at the 6 th  hole of the Masters on Thursday.  Harris English hit an incredible tee shot on the tough par 3.  So incredible that it just missed being a hole in one by about one-fourth of an inch.  English did not even so much as offer up a smile to the crowd.

To that unforced error, one of the commentators for the Masters online telecast implored: “Come on, Harris.  Smile.”

English is no doubt a very good person, but in that one instance he demonstrated a trend turning off both loyal and occasional golf fans.  That being that many of these players now seem to be robotic and aren’t inclined to give anything or very little back to the fans who ultimately afford them their living.  Several years ago, I watched as one of these players birdied seven of nine holes and never once cracked a smile or acknowledged the crowd.  He gave off the vibe that he was in the middle of a root canal rather than setting the golf course on fire.

Many of these PGA Tour players now look the same; swing the same; dress the same; act the same; go through the same sports academies; have the same coaches; the same sports psychologists; and seemingly, the same “it’s all about me” attitudes.  Note to these guys: a smile, a laugh and regular interaction with the fans goes a long way.

Over the last three decades, Phil Mickelson has given a Master Class on giving back to the fans.  As his time on the golf stage winds down, maybe some of these cookie-cutter, indistinguishable from the next, seemingly self-absorbed younger golfers may want to take a lesson from that golf legend.  As Arnold Palmer demonstrated for years, personality and individuality does matter.

Speaking of Mickelson, we come to reason number two why the PGA Tour is losing viewers.  Their foolish, ill-advised, and not remotely thought through war on LIV Golf .  It was the PGA Tour – and some enablers in the media – who ultimately were driving a wedge between the fans and the game.

From day one, myself and others were imploring the PGA Tour to embrace LIV Golf precisely for the good of the fans.  But not only did they fail to do that but again, some of their mean-spirited enablers went out of their way to smear Mickelson, Greg Norman, and LIV golf.  Premeditated, highly personal attacks that both offended and turned off countless golf fans.

Competition matters to fans.  Seeing the best against the best matters to fans.  Class matters to fans.

Suddenly, you have someone like Scottie Scheffler winning the Players Championship - often referred to as the "5th Major" by professional golfers – last year but with many fans wondering if there should be an asterisk next to his victory.  To be sure, Scheffler is a phenom.  That said, he won the “5 th  Major” against a dramatically weaker field.

More: Donald Trump greets Anthony Kim, Bryson DeChambeau and more golf stars at LIV Golf Miami

A field that did not include Mickelson, Brooks Koepka; Cam Smith (the defending champion at the time); Bryson DeChambeau; Dustin Johnson; Marc Leishman; Joaquin Niemann; Patrick Reed; Harold Varner III; Jason Kokrak; Thomas Pieters; Sergio Garcia - and a number of other topflight players.

This did not go unnoticed by the fans then and it is not going unnoticed by the fans now.  I am a longtime supporter of the PGA Tour.  That acknowledged, even I have tuned out its product of late.

PGA Tour's war vs. LIV for all the wrong reasons

The PGA Tour’s undeclared war against LIV Golf was not about acting in the best interest of the fans.  It was about wrongheadedly trying to protect its brand and their jobs to the detriment of the game and its fans.

That also did not go unnoticed by the fans.

More: Jack Nicklaus from Masters: Covers LIV Golf, Winston Churchill, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy & more

If the PGA Tour wants to stop the bleeding, bring the fans back and increase their footprint, the organization needs to do two things immediately.

  • First, embrace LIV Golf and figure out a way to bring those exceptional players back into the fold.  The PGA Tour and the Saudi-sponsored LIV have been negotiating for 10 months.
  • Second, ask Mickelson and Lee Trevino to teach their often petulant looking, robotic young golfers to smile, laugh, sign autographs and give back to the game.

Back in the glory days of NASA, the warning was: “No bucks, no Buck Rogers.”  For the PGA Tour, it should be: “No smiles and unification, no fans.”

The PGA Tour and its players have the power within them to turn this all around.

Tom Watson hopes players ‘do something’ and mend the PGA Tour-LIV Golf split

The professional golf world is bumping along down two separate paths, the PGA Tour and LIV Golf , and those have converged at the Masters .

This is the first time since last year’s U.S. Open that all of the game’s best players have convened to compete against each other.

Noticing that, two-time Masters winner Tom Watson felt the urge to say something about it this week at the annual Champions Dinner, which was honoring defending champion Jon Rahm , who since has defected to the LIV tour.

“We were sitting down and we were having great stories about [late Masters champion] Seve Ballesteros and people were laughing and talking,” Watson said Thursday, after opening tee times were pushed back an hour for inclement weather.

Five surprising things you should know about the Masters

A special tree, unique seats and rookie housing are among the surprising elements at Augusta National Golf Club, which hosts the Masters.

April 11, 2024

Watson and fellow legends Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player participated in the traditional start to the tournament, hitting their ceremonial tee shots on No. 1.

At the dinner on Tuesday night, Watson wanted to say a few words, so he asked Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley if that would be OK. Ridley said, “Please do.”

“I got up and said, ‘I’m looking around the room, and I’m seeing just a wonderful experience everyone is having,’” Watson said. “They are jovial. They are having a great time. They are laughing. I said, ‘Ain’t it good to be together again?’

“And there was kind of a pall from the joviality and it quieted down… In a sense, I hope that the players themselves took that to say, ‘You know, we do have to do something.’”

Watson said Thursday that golf has been “fractured” by the two competing tours fighting over the best players in the game.

There are 13 LIV players competing in this year’s Masters, including Rahm; Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka , who tied for second in last year’s tournament; and Patrick Reed , who finished fourth.

Defending Masters champion Jon Rahm is among the LIV Golf players competing at Augusta National Golf Club this weekend.

“We want to get together like we were at the Champions Dinner, happy, the best players playing against each other,” said Watson, flanked at a news conference by Nicklaus and Player. “The bottom line, that’s what we want in professional golf, and right now we don’t have it.”

Of the many issues that need to be resolved, sorting out who is invited to the Masters is a big one. Players who defect for LIV cannot play in PGA Tour events. They can compete in the Masters and the other three major championships if they qualify.

One of those ways to qualify involves their world ranking, but players don’t receive Official World Golf Ranking points for LIV events. So the field of LIV golfers in the Masters could dwindle by the year.

That means even fewer chances for the world’s best players to compete against each other.

“There’s a lot of people a lot smarter than me that could figure this out in a much more efficient way,” Rahm said. “But the obvious answer is that there’s got to be a way for certain players in whatever tour to be able to earn their way in.”

Rory McIlroy hits out of the rough on the 14th hole during the final round of the 2023 U.S. Open

Can Rory McIlroy finally win the Masters to complete his elusive career grand slam?

Rory McIlroy needs to win the Masters to earn a career grand slam, but he’ll have to hold off LIV stars and his nerves to score a green jacket.

April 10, 2024

Ridley noted that because the Masters is an invitational event, the tournament has the leeway to invite players who might not otherwise qualify, as is the case with some up-and-coming international golfers.

“If we felt there were a player or players, whether they played on the LIV tour or any other tour, who were deserving of an invitation to the Masters,” he said, “we would exercise that discretion with regard to special invitations.”

By late Thursday afternoon, Bryson DeChambeau was leading the tournament at seven under par. He’s a LIV golfer. This isn’t going away.

Two eligible players are skipping this week: last year’s FedExCup champion, Viktor Hovland, who missed the cut at the Masters following second-round 81, and Hideki Matsuyama, who tied for 38th in Augusta. Here’s a look at the initial full field, per the PGA Tour:

'A deal is close': Fierce LIV Golf critic Rory McIlroy linked to bombshell $1.3 billion move to the rebel tour

wwos logo stacked

Rory McIlroy , arguably LIV Golf's fiercest critic, has been linked with a bombshell move to the rebel league on a figure that would blow the most lucrative deals signed so far out of the water.

The Northern Irishman is said to be "close" to linking a deal worth $US850m ($A1.32bn) according to UK publication City A.M., with the superstar also reportedly requesting a 2 per cent stake in LIV Golf.

The news comes as LIV chief Greg Norman was seen at The Masters on the weekend, following McIlroy's group around Augusta National, even though the star claimed he had not seen the LIV boss.

If McIlroy was to sign, it would be the biggest scalp for Norman and the rebel league, after the game's biggest star Tiger Woods knocked back a deal worth more than $1 billion to stay loyal to the PGA Tour.

The London-based newspaper wrote: "Two separate sources have told City A.M. that they believe a deal is close."

Neither McIlroy nor LIV Golf have released statements despite media requests.

McIlroy has not been shy in directing venom at LIV since its bold plan to pry players away from the PGA Tour, but his stance has softened in recent months, since both sides entered negotiations over a deal to have professional golf under one umbrella.

He stated he felt like the "sacrificial lamb" once the warring parties sat down.

"I think what LIV has done, it's exposed the flaws in the system of what golf has … we're all supposed to be independent contractors and we can pick and choose what tournaments we want to play," he said in January.

"But I think what LIV and the Saudis have exposed is that you're asking for millions of dollars to sponsor these events, and you're not able to guarantee to the sponsors that the players are going to show up.

"I can't believe the PGA Tour has done so well for so long."

If McIlroy does make the switch, it would be the biggest signing since Masters winner and McIlroy's former Ryder Cup teammate Jon Rahm, who signed on the dotted line for a reported $US500 million ($AUD777 million) last year.

McIlroy is scheduled to compete at the PGA Tour's RBC Heritage tournament this weekend.
