2022 Hero World Challenge: TV schedule, tee times, how to watch, streaming

This week many of the biggest stars on the PGA Tour are in the Bahamas for the 2022 Hero World Challenge hosted by Tiger Woods. Here’s everything you need to know to watch the tournament.

Hero World Challenge preview

While Tiger is in attendance at this year’s Hero (he gave an interesting press conference on Tuesday ), he won’t be teeing it up for the first time in months as expected. The culprit is a painful case of plantar fasciitis that doesn’t affect him hitting shots but does prevent him from being able to walk 18 holes.

But even without Tiger, the 20-player field may be small but it is mighty, featuring three of the four 2022 major winners (Scottie Scheffler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Justin Thomas), and two players fighting to re-take the No. 1 world ranking from Rory McIlroy (Jon Rahm and Scheffler).

That’s not to mention other members of the OWGR top-10 Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa, defending champion Viktor Hovland and fan favorites Jordan Spieth and Tony Finau.

Golf Channel and NBC will provide TV coverage of the Hero World Challenge, while Golfchannel.com, NBCSports.com and Peacock will stream the action online.

Byron Nelson: Knapp in position for win No. 2

2024 pga championship odds, picks, best bets, field, knicks, pacers advance; kentucky derby picks, hovland hangs on to become repeat winner of world challenge.

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) Viktor Hovland led by four shots at the turn. No one got closer to him than two shots during the final nine holes at the Hero World Challenge.

It sounds easy. Far from it.

Hovland pulled a 6-iron from an awkward lie into the water on the 18th hole and had to make a 20-foot bogey putt for a 3-under 69 to secure victory Sunday, allowing him to join tournament host Tiger Woods as the only back-to-back winners of this holiday event.

''I made it a little more exciting, I guess,'' Hovland said.

A year ago, the 25-year-old from Norway rallied from six shots behind on the final day with a 66 to win. That was fun. Far more stressful was leading the entire way at Albany, even when it looked to everyone else that it was a Bahamas breeze.

Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, whose three-putt double bogey on the ninth hole left him five shots behind, stayed in the game with four birdies on the back nine that gave him a fleeting chance, two shots back playing the 18th.

Hovland faced a 6-iron from the slope above a bunker, with water left of the green. The face of the club closed on impact, and the ball headed left into the hazard.

''Basically just do anything else but hit it in the water,'' Hovland said. ''So as soon as that happened, I was pretty frustrated. But I knew that he didn't have a gimme par, so if I can wedge up there close, I can still make a putt and win the tournament. And if not, he still has to make a par to force me to a playoff.

''But it was a lot more stressful than it should have been.''

Scheffler put his approach into the sandy area, and his chip ran over the cup with too much speed, about 10 feet by the hole. If Hovland missed his bogey putt, Scheffler would have that putt for a playoff.

Hovland ended the suspense. Scheffler missed what became a meaningless putt and shot 68 to finish two shots behind, a runner-up to Hovland for the second straight year.

''I said earlier in the week that I don't like finishing second,'' Scheffler said. ''It's not a good feeling right now. But I'm proud of the fight.''

Woods won in 2006 and 2007 when it was held at Sherwood Country Club. He had to withdraw this week with plantar fasciitis in his right foot, instead watching in his Sunday red shirt for some drama no one was expecting.

''It's frigging nerve-wracking,'' Hovland said with a smile. ''You're never that comfortable. I didn't play that great on the back nine, but it was good enough.''

Hovland finished at 16-under 272 and won $1 million. The victory is unofficial, but the world ranking points pushed him up three spots to No. 9.

Scheffler needed to win to return to No. 1 in the world, at least for a few weeks. Rory McIlroy was projected to end the year at No. 1 regardless of the outcome.

Starting three shots behind, Scheffler holed a pitch from 30 yards short of the green on the par-5 sixth hole for eagle to reach 14-under par and momentarily tie for the lead. Hovland was in trouble off the tee. He had to play a pitching wedge over a 20-foot dune, an 8-iron to the green and then holed an 18-foot birdie putt to stay one ahead.

The next hole was pivotal, the 18th notwithstanding.

Scheffler's pitch from the bottom of the fairway on the short par-4 seventh barely got onto the green and rolled into the bunker, leading to bogey. Hovland was on the edge of a bunker and chipped to 5 feet for birdie and a two-shot swing, restoring his lead to three.

There were other challengers over the final two hours, just not for long.

Cameron Young made a strong bid and got within two shots at one point until he took bogey on the 16th. Xander Schauffele also made an early run until that ended with a bogey on the par-5 15th.

Scheffler ran off three straight birdies through the 16th hole to get within two shots, and Hovland gave him an opening on the 18th until he closed it with the big putt.

Scheffler still heads into the holidays with a breakthrough year behind him - the Masters among his four PGA Tour wins, No. 1 in the world longer than anyone else this year, the PGA Tour player of the year.

Young had a 68 and finished alone in third, followed by Schauffele (68) and Justin Thomas, who had five birdies in a six-hole stretch on the back nine to salvage a poor start and close with 70 to finish fifth.

''It's only 20 players, but it's the best 20 players in the world,'' Hovland said. ''You've got to play your best to win.''

The golf world was amped up for this week's Hero World Challenge, with its host, Tiger Woods, set to compete for the first time since his appearance in The 150th Open at St. Andrews in July. But then it's collective bubble was burst when Tiger tweeted out on Monday that he was withdrawing from the 20-player, no-cut event in the Bahamas due to a case of plantar fasciitis. (Here's hoping he will be rested up enough to play in The Match next week and the PNC Championship with son Charlie the following week.)

Woods will continue to play for his annual tournament, which benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation, and he'll witness a tournament with a stacked field even without the 82-time PGA Tour winner.

World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler will be making the trip to Albany Golf Club with four wins in 2022 under his belt, as will U.S Open champ Matt Fitzpatrick, PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas and previous Hero winner Jon Rahm. Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele will be there as well, along with newcomers for this event Tom Kim, Max Homa, Shane Lowry, Sungjae Im, Cameron Young and Corey Conners.

Last year’s winner, Viktor Hovland, became the first debutant to win since Rahm in 2018, and it was behind a six-under 66 on Sunday, with back-to-back eagles on 14th and 15th holes in the final round that helped him best Scheffler by one stroke.

The winner will receive a first place prize money payout of $1 million from an overall purse of $3.5 million.

Tiger Woods Aims to Compete in Following Three PGA Tour Majors Following Masters

T iger Woods, following his completion of all four rounds at the Masters last month, is eyeing participation in the remaining majors on the PGA Tour calendar for the year. During an appearance on NBC’s Today show, he expressed hope that he would be able to compete in the next three majors scheduled throughout the summer.

This marks a significant milestone for Woods, as the Masters was the first major tournament where he completed all four rounds since 2022, coincidentally also at Augusta.

In discussions prior to the Hero World Challenge, Woods had outlined his aspiration to partake in one event per month during the 2024 season, indicating a concerted effort to regain consistency in his tournament appearances. He noted a positive progression in his physical condition, expressing a lack of the debilitating pain that had previously hindered his performances, particularly evident during his time at Augusta.

Injuries have been a recurring challenge for Woods throughout his illustrious career, with recent years punctuated by significant setbacks that have disrupted his playing schedule.

Notably, a severe leg injury sustained in a single-car accident in February 2021 resulted in extensive fractures and subsequent surgeries, casting doubt on his future in competitive golf. However, his return to the Genesis Invitational in February 2022 marked a symbolic comeback to the sport.

Despite a commendable start at the Masters, where Woods finished one-over par through two rounds, he faced difficulties over the weekend, concluding the tournament with a plus-16 overall score.

Nevertheless, his commitment to a strategic one-tournament-per-month schedule aligns favorably with the upcoming major tournaments on the calendar, including the PGA Championship in May, the U.S. Open in June, and the Open Championship in July.

The anticipation surrounding Woods’ potential participation in these prestigious events underscores his enduring influence and appeal within the golfing community. Having last competed in a non-Masters major at the 2022 Open Championship, his return to these highly anticipated tournaments carries significant weight, symbolizing not only his personal resilience but also his enduring impact on the sport.

2022 Hero World Challenge picks, predictions, best bets, odds, props: Top rated PGA expert says back Jon Rahm

Patrick mcdonald analyzed the hero world championship 2022 field and locked in his best bets, props, sleepers, prediction, and long shots.

jon-rahm-usatsi-cbs.jpg

A chance to rub elbows with the best – and spend some time with Tiger Woods – has brought many top PGA Tour players to The Bahamas for the 2022 Hero World Challenge. This unofficial event features 20 players, with three reigning major champions and the best available players from the world rankings joined by two sponsor exemptions. Woods was scheduled to compete, but he has been sidelined by plantar fasciitis, Sepp Straka was tapped to take his place. That means 18 of the world's top 30 players will be in action this week, led by No. 2 Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Masters champion. He will be joined by fellow 2022 major champs Justin Thomas (PGA) and Matt Fitzpatrick (U.S. Open), as well as former major winners Jon Rahm, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa and Shane Lowry. Viktor Hovland returns as the defending champion after going 18 under to beat Scheffler by one stroke last year. Morikawa lost his chance to take over the world's No. 1 ranking with a victory in 2021 by blowing a six-stroke lead after 54 holes.

The Hero World Challenge field is studded with stars, so you'll have to dig into the odds to find value. More than a dozen players are 20-1 or shorter, and Caesars Sportsbook lists Rahm as the 5-1 favorite in its latest 2022 Hero World Challenge odds. Not far behind are Scheffler (15-2), Xander Schauffele (9-1) and Tony Finau (9-1). Hovland (12-1), Thomas (12-1) and Fitzpatrick (14-1) also are among the top contenders in the Hero World Challenge 2022 field. Before locking in any 2022 Hero World Challenge picks or golf bets, you need to see the PGA Tour predictions, best bets and sleeper picks from SportsLine golf insider Patrick McDonald .

After spending time at FanSided and NBC Sports EDGE, McDonald joined CBS Sports as a golf writer in the spring of 2022. Now covering the sport from a broader perspective, McDonald still likes to dip his toes into the betting pools on a weekly basis on the PGA Tour.

He takes a measured approach to his outright selections and finished the 2021-22 season up 42 units on those plays, having hit Cameron Smith (22-1) at the Tournament of Champions, Hudson Swafford (250-1) at The American Express, Joaquin Niemann (70-1) at the Genesis Invitational and Justin Thomas (66-1) live at the PGA Championship.

McDonald is having a profitable 2022-23 season in every category, and he nailed this month's Houston Open, backing Finau at 25-1. The expert has been on the money on his matchup plays and cashed in huge on Brendan Steele (80-1) as the first-round leader at the Zozo Championship. Anyone who followed McDonald's advice has cashed in huge.

Now, McDonald has studied the 2022 Hero World Challenge field and is locking in his best bets, best value and favorites to avoid.  You can head to SportsLine now to see all his PGA picks and predictions .

Top 2022 Hero World Challenge expert picks

IOne surprising pick from McDonald for this week: He is fading Burns (16-1), despite how strongly he played at this point last season. The now-26-year-old opened last season with a victory at the Fortinet and tied for third at the 2021 Hero World Challenge. He went on to win two more times before the end of May. The problem is, he has one top-10 finish since. The Louisiana native has always leaned on his putter, but the rest of his game has been so out of sorts that his flat stick can't rescue him. Burns is 226th in greens in regulation in 2022-23.

Meanwhile, the Albany course seems tailor-made for a player like Rahm, and he showed that in his only two appearances there. The Spaniard won his Hero World Challenge debut in 2018, then fell just one stroke short of Henrik Stenson the following year to finish as runner-up. He didn't play last year but comes in as the favorite after winning two of the past three DP World Tour events. The 28-year-old was fourth in total driving on the PGA Tour last season and eighth in greens in regulation (75 percent). That led him to rank fourth in scoring average (68.036).   See who else to pick at the Hero World Challenge here .

How to make 2022 Hero World Challenge golf picks

Before this week's PGA Tour event at Albany, McDonald has locked in his best bets for the 2022 Hero World Challenge. He is targeting an overlooked star to win who brings excellent value given his course history. The expert says this golfer is the best in the field in terms of strokes gained and should continue to excel on this seaside course.  You can only find out who it is, and see the rest of McDonald's picks and PGA Tour analysis, at SportsLine .

So which 2022 Hero World Challenge picks should you target? Which golfer brings excellent value in this stacked Hero World Challenge 2022 field? Check out the odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Patrick McDonald's top picks for Hero World Challenge 2022, all from the expert who nailed this month's Houston Open , and find out.

Inside the field: G4D Tour at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson

Change Text Size

The G4D Tour will stage its first-ever event in conjunction with a PGA TOUR tournament at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, with 10 of the world’s best golfers with a disability competing in the United States.

Held April 29-30 at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, host venue of THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, the new event features eight leading males and the top two females in the gross World Rankings for Golfers with a Disability (WR4GD).

G4D Tour participants at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson

Among those aiming to showcase their talent on the global stage are world No. 1 Kipp Popert, with the Englishman seeking to claim his 10th G4D Tour title.

Joining him in the field for the two-day stroke-play event are Americans Chris Biggins and Ryanne Jackson, who is the only first-time participant on the G4D Tour.

Ahead of the G4D Tour at THE CJ Cup Byron Nelson getting underway on Monday, here's a look at the 10 inspiring athletes set to tee it up.

Kipp Popert

  • World ranking (gross): 1
  • G4D Tour titles: 9
  • Sport class: Standing 2
  • Impairment: Weakness and spasticity in legs
  • Nationality: English

Born with cerebral palsy, Popert is a high-profile advocate for the inclusive power of golf. Despite the physical challenges he has faced growing up and overcoming multiple surgeries, he has reached the summit of the game, thriving on the international stage. Having only first heard about the competitive opportunities open to talented golfers with a disability in 2019 through EDGA, formerly known as the European Disabled Golf Association, he has since won around the world, including on no fewer than nine occasions since the launch of the G4D Tour in 2022. An inspiration to many, he competed in The Amateur Championship – organized by The R&A – last summer and challenged himself in events alongside leading professionals. Won the U.S. Adaptive Open – established by the USGA – last summer and claimed further silverware on his most recent G4D Tour start in Kenya earlier this year.

Brendan Lawlor

  • World ranking: 2
  • G4D Tour titles: 1
  • Sport class: Standing 3
  • Impairment: Short stature and limbs
  • Nationality: Irish

One of the most recognized golfers with a disability worldwide, Lawlor was born with a rare condition called Ellis-van Creveld syndrome, characterized by a shorter stature and shorter limbs. Since playing in his first EDGA event in 2017, the Irishman has competed around the world with great distinction. Having turned professional in 2019, he made history by becoming the first player with a disability to compete on the DP World Tour at the ISPS HANDA UK Championship in August 2020. Despite having won numerous EDGA titles over the years, including guiding his nation to win the European Team Championship in 2022, he had to wait until the inaugural G4D Open to claim his first G4D Tour title as he edged out Popert for victory. He has finished second and third in his two starts on the G4D Tour so far this season.

Chris Biggins

  • World ranking: 3
  • G4D Tour titles: 0
  • Nationality: American

The American, who has cerebral palsy, will hope playing on home soil can lead to his maiden title on the G4D Tour after a series of strong results. With top-five finishes in his last three G4D Tour starts, he is among the most consistent performers in the game. He claimed victory at the EDGA Cazoo Classic in 2021, which coincided with an event on the DP World Tour at London Golf Club. Away from competition, he is the director of player development at The Country Club of Birmingham in Alabama. In that role, the 2019 U.S. Disabled Open Golf Association Championship winner coaches youngsters.

Juan Postigo Arce

  • World ranking: 4
  • G4D Tour titles: 2
  • Sport class: Standing 1
  • Impairment: Leg length difference
  • Nationality: Spanish

Born without much of his right leg and no knee, the incredibly talented Spaniard is another of the leading ambassadors in the game. Born in the same part of Northern Spain as Seve Ballesteros, he has received widespread acclaim and continues to play an important role in raising awareness about the great number of players with a disability competing competitively. A proven champion, having been a three-time successive winner of the European Golf Association’s (EGA) European Championship for Golfers with Disability, Postigo Arce has since won twice on the G4D Tour – with both occasions coming last season in Abu Dhabi and Sweden respectively. He competed in the "Champions Challenge" on the eve of The 150th Open Championship at St Andrews in 2022.

Kurtis Barkley

  • World ranking: 6
  • Impairment: Spinal stiffness
  • Nationality: Canadian

Mike Browne

  • World ranking: 7
  • Impairment: Amputation above knee

Like his counterparts, Browne’s story is inspiring. A former soldier, the Englishman had his left leg amputated from the knee down following an infection that arose after a training accident almost a decade ago. Despite only starting to play golf in 2014, he turned professional in 2016. One of the longest drivers in the world, he first tasted success on the G4D Tour during its inaugural season in Ireland in 2022. A second followed last year over Jumeirah Golf Estates’ renowned Earth Course in Dubai, where he was the only player in the field to finish under par in the weather-shortened event.

Tomasso Perrino

  • World ranking: 8
  • Impairment: Weakness and stiffness of the lead leg
  • Nationality: Australian

Perrino competed against major champion and compatriot Francesco Molinari as a boy, but a motor scooter accident aged 18 curtailed his progress. Already a winner on the G4D Tour, having won in Northern Ireland in 2022, he has since become one of the most consistent performers. In 2023, he recorded top-five finishes in five consecutive G4D Tour appearances and became the first Italian to win the EGA’s European Championship in the Netherlands last July. Perrino featured in the All-Star Match ahead of the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club alongside Popert and fellow sportsmen such as Novak Djokovic and Gareth Bale.

Lachlan Wood

  • World ranking: 9

When aged 16, Wood was seriously injured in a car accident, resulting in his left leg being held together by 14 screws and a metal plate, while he has so far faced more than 40 surgeries. The leading player on the established World Ranking for Golfers with Disability from Australia, he is looking to continue his impressive start to the 2024 G4D Tour campaign. He secured his maiden win at the Australian All Abilities Championship @ the ISPS HANDA Australian Open in December, before finishing runner-up to Popert in Kenya in February.

Daphne van Houten

  • Nationality: Dutch

A routine physical screening at just 12 years old found a life-changing issue in van Houten’s back. She became the first woman to break into the top 10 of the World Ranking for Golfers with Disability in mid-2019. She was part of the inaugural field on the G4D Tour at The Belfry in 2022 and made her most recent appearance in Kenya. She won the EGA's Champion Women Golfer with Disability in 2018 and is a key member of the Dutch national setup. Her golfing hero is compatriot Anne van Dam, who plays on the Ladies European Tour and LPGA.

Ryanne Jackson

  • World ranking: 66
  • Impairment: Muscle weakness in arms and legs

Jackson has muscular dystrophy, a condition which causes the muscles in her shoulders and legs to weaken over time. While she first picked up a club at the age of 2, it was when she was 6 that she began the play sport regularly and declared herself a "lefty" despite being right-handed. Coached from a young age by her father, like both her older sisters, her diagnosis only came in her freshman year a college after struggling to understand the cause of physical tiredness she suffered from. Won the U.S. Adaptive Open at Pinehurst last summer and is now set for her debut on the G4D Tour.

The 2024 G4D Tour schedule comprises nine tournaments held in six different countries and includes a major championship with The G4D Open in May, which is run in partnership by The R&A and the DP World Tour.
