How Do You Get To Pig Island in Koh Samui?

Getting to Pig Island near Koh Samui is an adventure in itself. The island is only accessible by boat, which adds to the excitement of visiting this unique destination. There are several tour operators that offer day trips to the island, so visitors can hire a private long-tail boat or join a group tour from various locations such as Mae Nam, Bophut, and Choeng Mon beaches.

The journey from Koh Samui to Pig Island takes around 30 minutes by speedboat or 45 minutes by long-tail boat. Visitors can choose between these two options depending on their preference and budget. Speedboats are faster but more expensive than long-tail boats.

Once visitors arrive at Pig Island, they will be greeted with stunning views of the surrounding sea and lush greenery. There is an entrance fee of 50THB / person (cash only) to Koh Madsum that all visitors are required to pay upon arrival. This fee goes towards maintaining the island’s natural beauty and preserving its wildlife.

It’s important to note that Pig Island is a popular tourist destination, so it’s recommended to book in advance to secure a spot on a tour. Tour prices typically include transportation from Koh Samui, snorkelling equipment for exploring the underwater world around the island, and lunch.

LONG TAIL BOATS HEADING OUT TO PIG ISLAND IN KOH SAMUI

Option 1: Private Long-Tail Boat

For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, want to experience traditional Thai transportation methods, or prefer privacy and flexibility, hiring a private long-tail boat is your best option. These boats have an open-air design that allows passengers to feel the sea breeze and take in the scenery at a slower pace.

You can negotiate with the boat operator regarding the price and schedule that suits your preference. The cost varies depending on the distance, duration, and number of passengers. It usually ranges from 2,000 to 5,000 THB per hour for up to six people.

Moreover, hiring a private long-tail boat allows you to customize your itinerary according to your liking. You can decide how much time you want to spend on each island and which activities you want to do. You can also avoid crowds and have more space for yourself.

However, there are some disadvantages of hiring a private long-tail boat as well. First, it can be expensive if you are traveling alone or in a small group. Second, finding a reliable and trustworthy operator might be challenging since there are many scams and frauds in the area.

When negotiating with the boat operator regarding the price, be polite but firm. Do not accept their first offer since it is usually higher than what they expect to get. Try to find out their bottom line and work your way up from there. Also, be aware of any hidden fees such as fuel surcharge or entrance fee that might be added later on.

Top Tip : Do not pay the full cost upfront to the owner of the long-tail boat. Instead, pay half when you first board, and the remaining money upon completion of your tour.

Option 2: Group Tour

If you prefer convenience and affordability over privacy and flexibility, joining a group tour is your best option. There are many tour operators that offer day trips or half-day trips to Pig Island from Koh Samui. These are normally combined with a snorkelling tour to Koh Tan.

The cost of joining a group tour usually ranges from 1,000 to 3,000 THB per person depending on the package inclusion such as lunch, insurance, snorkelling equipment rental fee etc. It is recommended that you book in advance since most tours require a minimum number of participants.

However, there are some disadvantages of joining a group tour as well. First, you have limited time and freedom since you have to follow the itinerary set by the tour company. Second, you might not enjoy some activities or destinations included in the package.

The best boat trip I’ve had in Thailand (and I’ve tried a lot!). Driver arrived on time and was very friendly. The speedboat was great and the guys leading the trip were very helpful and kind. My guide spoke great English and offered to take pictures for me all day which was so nice as I was alone. The lunch was amazing, one of the best meals I’ve had in the country!

Usually the boat tours give you a small box of fried rice but on the STUNNING pig island, they set up tom yum, Tom kha, lots of fresh stir fried vegetables, rice, pineapple and watermelon… So good! Snorkelling was great as so many fish on the coral! Pig island was amazing and kayaking etc also…. Just a perfect day and great value!:) – Carly_S ( see more reviews here )

There are a number of reasons we enjoy visiting Pig Island. From interacting with the pigs, to swimming and snorkelling in the beautiful waters, there is something for everyone on this day tour!

Reason 1: Feeding The Pigs

One of the main highlights of visiting Pig Island is getting up close and personal with the friendly pigs that call the island home. The pigs are accustomed to human interaction and will approach visitors eagerly for treats.

Reason 2: Swimming With The Pigs

Another unique activity available on Pig Island is swimming with the pigs in their natural habitat. The pigs are excellent swimmers and enjoy cooling off in the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island. Visitors can join them for a refreshing swim and even snap some memorable photos while they’re at it.

Guidelines For Interacting With The Pigs

When visiting Koh Madsum, it’s important to follow guidelines for interacting with the pigs to ensure their safety and wellbeing. Visitors should avoid chasing or harassing the pigs and refrain from feeding them anything other than approved food purchased on the island.

It’s also important to respect the natural habitat of the pigs by not littering or disturbing any wildlife on the island. Following these guidelines will help ensure that visitors have a safe and enjoyable experience while also protecting the welfare of the pigs and their environment.

Reason 3: Snorkelling

In addition to interacting with the pigs, visitors can also explore the beautiful underwater world surrounding Pig Island by snorkelling. The waters around the island are teeming with colourful fish, corals, and other marine life, making it an ideal spot for snorkelling enthusiasts.

Supporting Sustainability on Pig Island

Interacting with and feeding Pig Island’s adorable pigs is an experience that is a unique, and one that has gained a lot of attention and love from people all over the world. However, as with any tourist attraction, there are concerns about sustainability and responsible tourism practices.

Fortunately, Mr Kitt, the owner of Pig Island near Koh Samui, along with GoJo Tours, has taken steps to promote sustainable practices and ensure that visitors can continue to enjoy this beloved destination for years to come.

One way that Gojo has promoted sustainability on Pig Island is by encouraging visitors not to bring their own food for the pigs, and instead relying on the host’s offerings of tasty corn and watermelon treats. This practice ensures that the pigs are getting proper nutrition. It also gives visitors an opportunity to take an active role in supporting the pigs’ well-being.

The benefits of promoting sustainability on Pig Island extend beyond just preserving natural resources or protecting animal welfare. Sustainable practices help create more stable economies by ensuring long-term viability of local businesses like Pig Island in Koh Samui. By taking care of our environment today, we can ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy it too.

Best Time to Visit Koh Samui and The Islands

Another factor that affects your experience on Pig Island is weather conditions. The best time of year to visit this island paradise depends on what kind of weather conditions you prefer. If you like sunny days with clear blue skies and warm temperatures, then visiting between December and April would be ideal for you.

On the other hand, if you prefer cooler temperatures with the possibility of occasional rain showers, then visiting between May and October would be better suited for your preferences. Keep in mind that even during the rainy season; there are still plenty of sunny days where swimming with pigs becomes an unforgettable experience.

However, it’s important to note that during the monsoon / rainy season, from late October until mid-December, heavy rains can occur frequently causing the sea to become rough and unsafe for swimming. During monsoon season, it’s best to avoid visiting Pig Island as the weather conditions can be unpredictable.

Essential Travel Planning Resources for Thailand

These are our favourite companies to use when we travel to Thailand. They consistently turn up the best deals and offer great customer service, and overall, are better than their competitors. These companies are always our starting point when we need to book a flight, hotel, tour, transportation etc.

Book Your Flight : The best and easiest way to find cheap flights is to use Skyscanner or Kiwi . They compare all of the available prices across every airline to help you compare flights in one place.

Book Accommodation: In Thailand, whether you are looking to book a hostel, guest house, hotel or resort, you’ll always find the best deals on Agoda . We always search using the map feature to find accommodation in the best location. If we are staying for a month or longer in a destination, we also search for monthly deals on Airbnb and Booking.com . For hostel bookings, we compare reviews on Hostelworld , then check other booking sites to compare prices.

Book a Tour: We mostly travel independently, however, some places are better to visit with a guided tour. We use both  GetYourGuide   and  Viator to find great deals on tours in Thailand.

Book Transportation: Rome2Rio is a great planning tool which allows us to see how to get from point A to point B the best and cheapest way possible. From there, we book our transportation through 12Go.asia to save both money and time. We believe the best way to explore Thailandis by motorbike or bicycle, and BikesBooking.com offer the most competitive prices. If you are planning a road trip, we always use  Rentalcars.com to find the best deals.

Book Travel Insurance: Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft and cancellations. We never travel without it as we have had to use it several times in the past. We have been using 1Cover for the past 4 years, however, we also recommend World Nomads as many of our fulltime travel friends swear by them.

Always Carry With You: When travelling in Thailand , we always carry a   daypack  for excursions, and the   Lonely Planet Guide !

A wonderful experience visiting Pig Island and to see so many pigs and piglets roamed freely on the island. The seaview is fantastic and water is crystal clear around the island. Fun to snorkel among the coral reefs and to admire the marine life in the sea.

Happy day with some very happy pigs ☺️ staff on the island were super friendly and helpful too. The pigs and dogs on the island were all very playful and we loved being able to spend time with them. Mr. Kitt purchased these pigs from a local market in Surat Thani during a trip to the mainland, then he decided to bring them back to Koh Madsum.

Over time, these pigs became a significant attraction, allowing tourists who visit the island to see and interact with them. As of now, the pig population has grown to a total of 12 pigs after three generations. The pigs are known to spend their time relaxing in the shade of coconut trees, playing in the sand, and swimming in the ocean.

“PIG ISLAND EXPERIENCE FROM KOH SAMUI”

pig island tour koh samui

Today we would take you to travel at “Pig Island” new unseen attraction in Thailand. This trip we will travel from Koh Samui by Thai traditional long tail boat to Koh Tan and Koh Mudsum where are the secret paradise islands in the south part of Koh Samui

If you heard about Pig Island, it is a new trend calling, actually the real name is “Koh Mudsum” where located next to Koh Tan and Five Islands. Originally, Samui local people go to this island for fishing and picnic with friends and families on the weekend. Later on, there are some tourists go to visit the island for relaxing and someone brough the pigs to take care on the island. After that, once tourists come over to visit Koh Mudsum and see all cuties pigs stay on the beach, feeding and playing with them are created to be a new activity and became very popular destination for both of Thai and foreigners’ tourists.

Traveling to Koh Mudsum (Pig Island), you have the option of taking the speed boat or long tail boat from Thong Krut pier. Booking one day trip included the pick up services is the easiest way and save your holiday’s time. However, today we want to create our own programs and manage the time by ourselves, thus we make a decision to take the private boat just for our group and go by long tail boat that could be cool.

We rent a car and drive to the pier, after preparing our snacks, lunch box, and some drinks, then start moving from the hotel about 08:30 am. Driving to the pier is very easy, just type the word of “Thong Krut Pier” on the Google Map and follow the GPS, takes about 45 minutes ride from Chaweng beach and it’s a good departure time as there are not much traffic in the morning.

Arrive to the pier, then we take the long tail boat about 15 minutes to the first spot for snorkeling around Koh Tan. Get nice shots during journey on this unique boat and sightseeing around that you can see other small islands and a lot of the fisherman boats from local people go out for catching the fishes and other seafood.

pig island tour koh samui

We got clear sky and crystal blue water on the traveling date, so we can see a lot of beautiful fishes and coral reefs that made us having a wonderful snorkeling, spent time about an hour here before heading for another 5 minutes to reach the Pig Island. Captain told us that there are more fishes at another side of Koh Tan, so you can go there for fishing. But, we didn’t make it because our main target is visiting the cuties pigs and spending a lovely time with them.

pig island tour koh samui

Before arrive to Koh Mudsum, you would see the long white sandy beach of the island that you can have the feeling of real relaxing time (Can’t explain it enough till you come to touch by yourself). Arrive to the island, you can have something to eat or drink at the restaurant located on the beach or keep your memory with a nice photo with small beautiful Island’s sign that makes from wood and sea shells.

pig island tour koh samui

We arrived to Koh Mudsum in the midday and it was really warm weather, so we could see about 7-8 pigs stayed in the shade around restaurant. They may get tired from the heat and need to take a rest in the afternoon, however if they see food in your hands, their noses would automatically work and come up with full energy to walk follow you. All of them are very friendly and get used to with people, so you can feed and play with them if you want.

pig island tour koh samui

The cuties pigs will walk to the beach once the weather’s fine in very late afternoon for having a bath in the natural jacuzzi, laying down and walking on the beach to make their bodies cool down from a sunny day. We spent quite a long time to get nice photos when they are staying on the beach and we can say they made our days.

pig island tour koh samui

They also have day beds for sunbathing that you can use them with free of charge, order some drinks from the restaurant and relax on the beach would be such a wonderful day.

pig island tour koh samui

After getting nice shots with all piggy, then we spent the rest of the day to walk around this charming little island. What we found is real relaxing time and feel like stayed in another world that no have any rush and noisy. The beach here is cleaned and cleared water with fresh air. We charged full of energy from this paradise island.

Another fun activity that you can do on your visiting to Pig Island is “Kayaking”. If you book the trip with full option, they will have it included or not you can contact people at the restaurant and pay additional directly. Full pack of fun and happiness till the ending time to say good bye and leave this amazing island. We have such a great day traveling, thank you to our captain who brings us to the places nice and safe, big thanks to all piggy that makes us laugh and happy from their nature innocent, and the last thing be thankful to the beautiful nature that it is created a wonderful island and give us a chance to release our stress and have a real relaxing time, nature itself also tells us how to keep the life balance.

We watch them make coconut sugar that is my first time to see it. The train market is amazing, there are a lot of local food. The highlight is the dragon tower we went up 17 floor and the view up there is very worth to see! note: please wear comfortable shoes I enjoyed the tour and the guide was very helpful and has knowledge about the places. • Matthew G 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Friendly and Fun! Aem, our tour guide, was super friendly and a pleasure to hang out with. She provided an overview of the history of Koh Madsum from when the pigs first arrived to its current popularity as a tourist destination. She even knew all the pigs by name and knew how to best pet the pigs. Hint, they love their belly rubs! From her words and actions it was obvious she cared for the pigs and wanted her guests to understand how to care for and enjoy them too. We next visited a secluded beach on Koh Madsum where you can relax in the crystal clear waters away from other tourists. The last stop was for snorkeling. It was disappointing to see other tour guides letting their guests stand on the coral reefs. Aem reminded us this is not a good practice and made sure we knew not to do that. I was proud that she scolded the other tour guide a bit for letting their guest do this. This tour operator really tries to minimize the negative environmental impacts caused by tourism and positively support the local community. Highly recommend you use them. • missamy1981 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great tour! Just back from a wonderful day with GoJo Tours in and around Bangkok! Started at the coconut farm (my least favourite part of the day, but still enjoyable and informative nonetheless!), then onto the train market and ended up at Wat Samphran (dragon temple). Enjoyed some delicious food and coffee at the train market and thoroughly enjoyed our 3 baht train ride! The dragon temple was spectacular and had lovely grounds to enjoy too. Our guide, Anne, couldn’t have done a better job and as it was just the 3 of us and her, we pretty much had a personalised tour. Our taxi driver was also lovely and was happy to stop whenever we wanted during the journey. Highly recommended tour! Read more Written 13 September 2020

Gojo were really helpful from the first inquiry and arranged a private tour for our group of 8. Our guide Tee knew lots of interesting facts and places and clearly loved to show us all around with warmth. The trip in all was 5 hours but we spent quite a bit of time escaping the heat in local cafes and art galleries, discovering new foods and places. I'd highly recommend to anyone interested in exploring the less visited spots of the city. Read more Written 1 September 2020

  • CKF 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic Day! We live in Bangkok and have been wanting to see the Dragon Temple (Wat Samphran) and the Maeklong Railway Market for a long time. I came upon this tour offered by Gojo Tours, and it was perfect for us. We and another couple signed up for a Sunday, since right now (Aug 2020) you can climb to the top of the Dragon Temple only on weekends. Our guide, Anne, was simply wonderful. She met us at the assigned point and time, greeting us with a friendly smile and with lots of enthusiasm. Her English is very good, and she was happy to answer all questions and provide needed information along the way. We had a comfortable van for the day. Our first stop was a coconut farm, the name of which I didn't catch. We saw part of the sugar-making process and even climbed a coconut tree. Then it was onto the Maeklong Railway Market. I really appreciated Anne's help with asking questions about prices and products when we wanted to purchase. That really makes the experience more comfortable and more enjoyable for someone who does not speak the local language. She took us to a place selling the most delicious rolled noodles--for 14 baht per bowl! I could have eaten them all day. As train arrival time approached, we made our way to the tracks and found a good spot. It was fun to watch the vendors move their wares and their awnings (umbrellas) away from the track when the horn sounded. The train came through, within two feet of each side! To continue the experience, we then got to ride the train back out, actually through the market! Anne was willing to take any and all photos for us, and she got some really great ones, which she shared with us via Whatsapp. Our last stop was the Dragon Temple, a very unique pink cylindrical temple with a dragon sculpture wrapped around it. Lots of great photo opportunities. Everything about the trip was perfect. Anne was kind, helpful, enthusiastic, and lots of fun. We highly recommend Anne, Gojo Tours, and this tour in particular.
