Flight instruction is at the core of everything aviation related. You can't have airplanes without pilots, and you can't have pilots without instructors.

We feel like it's our calling to foster and grow the aviation community one student at a time. Not only will you achieve a pilot's license, but we hope you walk away with a sound understanding of why we believe flying is one of the greatest freedoms we have.

I started with these guys in 1987 flying the Tomahawk and built enough hours to get my Private but never took the checkride. In 2017 I went up for a lesson, got hooked again, and re-committed to finishing. The atmosphere is always positive and that was a huge help as I moved through the different levels of certification. Since my training with them I’ve taken a position with a charter company on twin engine jets. Alexandria Aviation gave me the boost I needed and I will always be thankful for them.

How much does it cost to get my Private Pilot License?

It truly varies based on your work ethic, ability to pick up new information, rate at which you train, and many other facts. With Alexandria Aviation, it is safe to budget $9,000 to $11,500 for a Private Pilot License.

How many hours of training does it take to get my license?

The FAA requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight time. The national average for new pilots is around 60 hours. The average pilot at Alexandria Aviation is ready to take their checkride around 50 hours.

How do I complete my ground school?

The modern way of going through ground school is with an online ground school course such as Sporty's, Gleim, MZeroA, King, etc. There are still some ground topics that must be completed in person with an instructor. The average student can budget about 15-20 hours of ground school with an instructor.

Is there an age limit?

The FAA requires students to be 16 years old to solo an airplane, and 17 to take the checkride for Private Pilot License.

What do I need before I can do my first solo flight?

Students need to have a valid FAA 3rd Class Medical certificate, and a Student Pilot Certificate. Our instructors can help you with the Student Pilot Certificate. However, we aren't doctors so we will have to refer you to an FAA approved physician for your medical certificate!

How long does it take to get my license?

That depends completely on your personal schedule, work schedule, family commitments, and finances. We have seen people whip through in six weeks, and others that have taken two plus years. We understand that each student has their own unique situation and we are commitment to finding a flying schedule that works for you. On average, our students take 9-12 months to get their license doing one lesson per week.

How long is a lesson?

Our standard lesson is a two hour block time with roughly one hour of flight time. Schedule dependent, we are happy to adjust the length of lessons accordingly.

Will you travel to me?

Yes, we will. If you supply your own airplane we can travel to your home airport. You will be charged the IRS mileage rate for each roundtrip. If you need to use our airplane, you will be charged for the airplane and instructor time to and from.

How long is my pilot license good for?

The certificate will last a lifetime. There are several requirements for currency though.

What tests are required for a pilot license?

There are two exams that are required. There is a computer-based knowledge exam, which may be performed at any time during flight training. There is also a practical exam, which consists of oral and flight segments. The practical exam is is performed with an FAA appointed examiner.

Pretty decent truck stop. The showers are clean and the water gets hot with great pressure. The only thing is it's not a very big parking lot. Other than that it's fine.

Located not far from the highway and mostly easy to access. I found this convenience store and gas station to be a great stop to refuel the car, visit the restroom and pick up some drinks for the road. The station includes a Subway if that's something you enjoy and a selection of Dunkin Donuts donuts and coffees. It is not a full DD location. Gas pump area was wide with a high roof. Squeegee worked well as did the receipt printer. [Review 15621 overall - 1352 in Virginia - 1125 of 2021.]

This Pilot is located right off the highway and east to access. Plenty of parking for semi trucks and cars alike. The inside was very clean including the restrooms. The cashier was very friendly. You can't ask for much more when traveling

The employees are so lazy. Especially Grayson. They don't want to check restrooms, fuel aisles, or anything. Grayson is a real tool-bag. We literally go to a pilot/flying J everyday. Grayson said they don't sale whole cheese pizzas. How is it that every other Pilot/Flying J will make one but not this one. Common sense says if they sell pizzas at all then they can make a whole cheese pizza because the base of every pizza in the goddamn store is cheese. Grayson is just a lazy little fellow with no common sense or concern for customer satisfaction. Zero stars for that zero.

If you need gas or to potty for sure don't go here. i wish i could give this place negative stars. We went to 3 different pumps and not a single one worked and only AFTER DOING ALL THAT I walk up to the door to get me a coffee and to use the bathroom, well we can't bc the bathrooms aren't working BUT HEY THEYLL BE GETTING PORTAPOTTIES SOON FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL OUTSIDE SHITTING WEATHER!! we didn't even get to meet grayson and see if they had any cheese pizza

Worst pilot gas and employees do not check bathrooms or care about gas pumps working properly

I'll start by saying I grew up in Knoxville, TN (where Pilot is HQ is located) and have been a Pilot customer for well over 40 years. I actively seek out Pilot locations via their mobile app while traveling. Not sure I'll be back after the experience at this location. Stopped here to fuel while traveling home from the DC area. I swiped my card as usual, entered my rewards info and proceeded to fuel. I purchased $33.08 in gas. When I finished fueling my phone buzzed with a notification from my bank about a charge of $151 to Pilot. I was shocked! I checked my transactions and sure enough there were 2 charges - the $33.08 in fuel and $151. I immediately went inside to speak to a manager. The person I spoke to told me it was normal - they put a hold on my card and it would be returned the following morning. I told him that had NEVER happened to me before at Pilot (or any other gas station), and he just shrugged and said it was normal. I was outraged! I'll note that I fueled at 2 other Pilot locations on my drive up to DC, and this did not happen at either of those. It has never happen, and I have been fueling at Pilots for years. I emailed Pilot's corporate office to complain and an awaiting a reply. This has made me question whether I'll ever use Pilot again. I know I will NOT be back to this location!

I went to this location for gas coming from visiting a college with my daughter. I tried to purchase gas at the pump with my card. At first the pump requested for me to put in my pin, which I did, then it asked for my ZIP Code. Then it said "See cashier." So as I was heading inside, I noticed another car pulled up at the same time I did, and they proceeded to use their card at the pump, and pump gas without incident. When I got inside to the cashier, I asked him what gives? He flat out told me "We don't trust your kind around here, so we request You to come to the counter." Needless to say I did not purchase anything from this place. I am in African-American who was simply trying to purchase gas at the pump, but this cashier felt it was necessary for me to come inside to use my card instead of using the card at the pump as everyone else did. I could not believe the cashier was bold enough to say that to my face. No one should shop here at all!

This location is very big. It's also very clean and the bathrooms don't wreak of urine. The staff is friendly as well.

A traffic jam on the freeway brought me to Pilot. Well... plus the need to use the bathroom. Being the expert public restroom user that I am, I drove past one of Pilot's competitors since their gas station looked older, which generally means outdated bathrooms, and headed to Pilot. Entering the store, it smelled of tasty food and the aisles were well-stocked and clean. I breathed a sigh of relief when I entered the women's restroom. It was clean!!! Thank you, Pilot, for coming to the rescue! Unfortunately, they were out of cheese pizza so I cannot speak of the quality of their pizza. They only had pepperoni and sausage pizzas in stock.
