Sierra Leone Population – 7,980,700 Language – English Currency – Sierra Leonean Leone Time Zone – GMT Capital – Freetown

A stunningly beautiful country with wonderfully welcoming locals, Sierra Leone meaning Lion Mountains has enjoyed almost two decades of peace since the civil unrest in the 1990’s and that’s exactly how Sierra Leoneans intend to continue.

Gaining independence in 1961 and becoming a republic ten years later, Sierra Leone played an important part in upholding the abolition of the slave trade in the 19th century when Britain established a naval base here to patrol the West Africa coast intercepting illegal slave ships. Its capital Freetown which was formerly known as Freedom and known earlier as Romarong meaning “place of wailers” is a vibrant, busy, and exciting city. More than 50,000 freed slaves settled in Freetown creating a multi-ethnic community. Sixteen ethnic groups are found in modern day Sierra Leone with the largest being Mende, followed by Temne, Limba and Kono all contributing to the wonderful cultural diversity which adds so much to the inquisitive travellers’ experience. Beautiful white sand beaches, exceptional birding and wildlife, stunning upper guinea rainforests and an intriguing historical past collectively make Sierra Leone the perfect location for a West African adventure.

Sierra Leone Weather and Climate

The climate in Sierra Leone is tropical, hot, and humid all year round with the driest and warmest months being from November to April where temperatures can average between 30°C and 32°C. The main rains start in May and the temperature is cooler during the rainy season from June to October dropping below 30°C with the rains easing in November. Seasonal changes are different from those of North America and Europe, due to its proximity to the Equator and Sierra Leones temperature is reasonably consistent. From December to mid-January, the Harmattan winds blow from the Sahara Desert, which can cause very dry and hazy conditions, but this has little or no effect on visitors.

Equipment and clothing.

Due to the wide variety of tours we offer, this information will be forwarded upon confirmation of your booking in your pre-trip information pack.

All our company drivers, assistants and expert local guides are employed on full time contracts with Ashanti African Tours and receive a basic salary and daily bonus when on tour. Ashanti African Tours also have a company policy to tip all local site guides and hotel staff. Therefore, if any of our clients would like to tip any of our guides, site guides, drivers, or staff at hotels we use, it is at the client’s own discretion.

Spending Money

The amount of spending money you will need is determined by the type of tour you have booked with us. The majority of our standard scheduled and customized tours are all-inclusive, so you only need to budget for the following: snacks, soft (not mineral water as this is always included) and alcoholic drinks and items of a personal nature. If you have booked a budget tour, then some aspects of the tour may not be included in the tour price and you will receive this information during your enquiry process.

Building schools, protecting rainforest, having a sustainable positive impact locally

Ashanti would like to think most international travellers coming to West Africa care about the locations they visit and about having a positive impact during their time here. Booking with a responsible travel company goes a long way to achieving this. Many companies state they benefit locals and conservation when they do extraordinarily little and are more focused on their profit margins. Ashanti are West Africa’s leading travel company putting their profits back into building schools, protecting wildlife, rainforest, biodiversity and connecting communities to the conservation of their environment through community development initiatives connected to eco-tourism. Click to learn more about where our profits go.

Travel Insurance

You must ensure that you have adequate personal insurance cover for your trip. It is a compulsory requirement for all our trips in Sierra Leone and other African destinations and it is your responsibility to take out a suitable policy. You will not officially join our tours until evidence of your insurance has been provided to our office. This must include personal accident, medical expenses, and repatriation to your country of origin. We also strongly recommend that your policy covers cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects. Please note that free insurance cover offered by some credit cards does not cover repatriation expenses.

Hotel Accommodation

As most of our tours are customized tailor-made tours then your budget will determine the standard of accommodation at each location. Sierra Leone has a limited selection of hotels however there are some good standard establishments in the capital Freetown and most of these are mid-range. As you venture outside the capital to the smaller towns and communities there is a wider selection of clean and more basic hotels. Our experienced tour planners will identify the best hotel to fit your budget in the right location. If you have booked onto one of our scheduled Sierra Leone tours, then we usually use quality mid-range hotels when available and all with private en suite facilities and air-conditioning. Outside of the capital and in some remote locations where these hotels are not available, we will use the best standard alternative.

Immunisations and Vaccinations

ou need to consult your doctor or travel clinic six to eight weeks prior to departure for extensive up to date information on foreign travel to Africa.

Below is a guideline only:

Polio Tetanus Typhoid Anti-malaria tablets (consult your chemist) Hepatitis A Meningitis Yellow fever (you must carry a valid certificate with your passport)

Responsible Tourism

When you travel with Ashanti African Tours you can be assured that all trips are ethical and sustainable, as we put the environment and the communities at the heart of all that we do. As such, this policy draws on the criteria set out by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and tries to recognise many of the principles within the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s (UNWTO) Global Code of Ethics for Tourism. All Ashanti African Tours trips aim to have a positive impact on the countries, communities, and environments we visit. Our policy of operating low-impact, ethical tours allows us to create authentic, cultural connections, which not only enhances the traveller experience, but also creates economic opportunity and social development, whilst preserving local cultures for future generations. For full detailed information on our company responsible travel policy please visit the Ethical Travel page of our website.

We Offset Your Trips Carbon Footprint

We plant 3 indigenous forest tree species for every person that travels with us. The main aim for this project is carbon offsetting – guests choosing to travel with us would offset their flights to/from West Africa by more than 15 times if the trees live to their expected lifespan. This is based on projected carbon dioxide generated on a return flight for the average guest (approximately 900kg/1980 lbs). The average tropical tree can absorb approximately 48lbs of carbon per year (when mature) and in West Africa it takes 30-50 years for a tropical tree species to grow to maturity, with an average life expectancy of 200-300 years. If the trees we plant for each guest are continued to be protected, then we are confident that we will be making a big difference in carbon offsetting: 3 trees planted would each absorb approximately 10,080 lbs of carbon, totalling 30,240 lbs/13,745 kg for all 3 trees (per guest).

Best time to visit sierra leone.

With an average temperature of 80 degrees F, Sierra Leone is one of West Africa’s hottest - and wettest - countries. The rainy season runs from mid-May to mid-November, during which the humidity can be taxing. Days are even hotter inland, though the nights are cooler. April to November are the best months for travel, particularly November.

Geography and environment

Save for the moderate mountainous peaks of the Freetown peninsula – a rare instance of mountains existing along the West African coastline – the coastal zone of Sierra Leone is a flat amalgam of mangrove swamps, beaches and islands. The country’s lushly forested and undulating interior is primarily dedicated to subsistence agriculture, though elephants, chimpanzees, lions, leopards and birds call the 21 established national parks home. Migrating humpbacks whales can be spotted drifting off the coast during October and November.

Best beach escapes in Sierra Leone

1. river number 2 beach.

Lauded fairly unanimously as the country’s finest beach – and one of the best in the entire West Africa region – this white-sand, crystal-watered, palm-fringed haven is only 16 km from Freetown’s bustle. Sure, it may be the country’s most crowded stretch of sand, but don’t let that bother you – you’ll hardly be vying for a plot of sand to lay a towel. And as the locals will proudly tell you, it was here that a 1970s Bounty chocolate bar advertisement was filmed – a gloat-worthy drawcard if ever there was one.

2. Banana Islands

Only a short boat ride from Freetown, an outing to the Banana Islands makes for the perfect day trip or overnight stay. Aside from being a place of remarkable natural beauty, an old church and the still standing slave-trading dock bestow the islands with some historical poignancy. A collection of canons in shallow water – remnants of a bygone Portuguese shipwreck – can be explored through snorkeling or diving expeditions, while the islands’ forests, caves and ruins should be enough to enthrall landlubbers. Dublin and Ricketts, the two main islands, can simply be strolled between during low tide, though the considerate construction of a causeway will prevent the stranding of hapless tourists.

3. John Obey Beach

White-sand beaches lapped by warm waters and backed by lushly forested mountains… with no one about? The throngs have yet to reach this secluded piece of beach bliss, so – for the moment at least – you can bank on having the sands, fresh seafood and local village interactions pretty much to yourself.

4. Bureh Beach

As well as being a spectacular beach in its own right and the departure point for boat trips to the Banana Islands, Bureh Beach now has a further claim to fame – it’s the place of the country’s very first surf club! Jutting out from the southwest point of the Freetown Peninsula, this small subsistence fishing village of just 200 people is seeking to capitalize on the warm waters and mellow waves that have long graced its shores with the establishment of the nation’s premier surf school. Clock-up some tube time as the smell of your barbecuing seafood lunch wafts over from the shoreline. As the clubs logo aptly puts it, ‘Di waves dem mak u go feel fine’. You betcha!

5. Tokeh Beach

Before the war years left Tokeh Beach’s resorts in tatters, its expansive powder-white sands and crystalline waters had been known to lure even the most uppity of international supermodels and Hollywood buffoons. With the country now on the mend, they could well be set to return. Get there before they do!

Sierra Leone Safari Tours & Holidays

Sierra Leon is a country in West Africa, on the Atlantic Ocean. It’s known for the white-sand beaches lining the Freetown Peninsula. The capital city, Freetown, commemorates the nation’s slave-trade history with the Cotton Tree landmark and King’s Yard Gate. Both were known as places of refuge for returned slaves in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nearby Bunce Island was a key departure point during the slave trade.

Tucking into a lobster on a beach besides lapping waves, under a lazy, hazy sun: it’s about as picture-postcard perfect a holiday moment as many could imagine.

The tiny West African country might attract only 4,000 visitors a year at present, but there’s plenty for them to get up to. Just south of the capital Freetown, founded in 1787 as a home for freed slaves, a swathe of the swim-perfect sea stretches out for 40 kilometers along the peninsula coast, each cove offering up a hidden beach with its own distinctive qualities. For example, while John Obey’s beach is home to thick ochre sand, River No 2’s sands are fine white, York beach is lead-grey and the sweep at Bureh reveals a mountain-backed crescent beside the Atlantic. Almost all are united by their very emptiness.

How to get to Sierra Leone

Lungi International, Freetown’s airport, is across a sea estuary from Freetown. You can go the long way round over land, but the quickest and safest airport transfer is by boat. For US$40, the  Sea Coach  or the  Sea-Bird  will carry you and your bags to Freetown’s west end, covering the 17-mile distance in less than half an hour. The Sea Coach offers free Wi-Fi and a bottle of water, as well as ‘soothing music’ (Celine Dion is a popular choice). Alternatives include a government-run ferry or a long drive—but shell out for the speedboat for the convenience, and to enjoy the city’s mountainous backdrop.

Passport, Visa, and Entry requirements for Sierra Leone

All persons entering Sierra Leone must have a valid passport or travel document. Citizens of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) do not require a visa to enter the country.

Visas are issued at Sierra Leone’s overseas missions or you can have a look at our  online visa service  page to find out how we can facilitate this for you in 2 to 3 business days. Even for countries where the visa fee is waived, you still a visa to enter.

The health sector of Sierra Leone

The Sierra Leone health care system is organized into two tiers of care: Peripheral Healthcare Units (PHUs) with an extended community health program and secondary care which includes 21 district and three referral hospitals; there are also 45 private clinics and 27 private hospitals, mostly in the Freetown area and the health care system may not insure international travelers so please you purchase travel insurance before traveling to Sierra Leone.

Malaria and Yellow fever vaccination for Sierra Leone

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for all travelers. There is no vaccination for Malaria; you will need to take Antimalarial tablets as it is a high-risk area. We recommend you have a consultation with our expert Travel Nurses to talk through your Antimalarial medication options.

The currency of Sierra Leone

The Leone is the currency of Sierra Leone. The Leone was introduced on 4 August 1964. It replaced with the British West African Pound.

Official Language of Sierra Leone

Although  English , as the official language, is spoken in schools, government administration, and the media, Krio is widely spoken as a lingua franca. As of 2005, approximately 97% of the population speak the Krio language (either natively, or as a second or third language).

Best time to travel to Sierra Leone

The best time to go to Sierra Leone is in the dry season, which runs from October to May. January and February tend to be the hottest months. Birders will find December or January most rewarding. Travel is possible in June and late September, although there will be heavy downpours and rural roads, can become very muddy.

What to wear in Sierra Leone

Most Sierra Leoneans will wear dress slacks and a colorful African shirt. The country is 60% Muslim so it is not uncommon for those at a business meeting to be dressed in traditional Muslim clothing and there are no strict dressing code rules but we recommend if you’re going to public places in Freetown you dress decently.

What to bring while traveling to Sierra Leone

Even if you plan to lounge on the beach and do nothing else, there are some basic items you want to include in your beach packing list.

  • Bathing suit
  • A good book
  • Cell phone and charger
  • Conditioner

Car hire and driving in Sierra Leone

After many years when it was virtually impossible to rent a self-drive car in Sierra Leone, Europcar now has a branch in Freetown and does seem to offer self-drive but we don’t recommend self-driving in sierra Leone.

Accommodation in Sierra Leone

There are accommodation facilities throughout Sierra Leone but an advance booking may be required as they may be limited in a particular attraction or destination.

Local food of Sierra Leone

Stews are a fundamental part of Sierra Leone’s cuisine, with cassava leaves having been called the country’s national dish. Stew is often served simultaneously with jollof rice, white rice, or snacks such as plantain, Akara, yam, or cassava.

Tipping while Travelling in Sierra Leone

Like anywhere in the world tipping is key for service staff and free to tip in while in sierra Leone and we recommend anything between 10-15 US dollars for activities and more for the main Guide at the end of the safari.

Further information for Sierra Leone

We recommend booking tailor-made safaris to sierra Leone to avoid the hustle and missing out on top safari destinations.

Safety of Sierra Leon

The official warnings say Sierra Leone is a high-crime nation, with a significant risk of pickpocketing and theft. This is not the place to flash lots of cash or expensive phones. Certain places are to be avoided or treated with caution.

Discover our Holidays to Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is one of West Africa’s most enticing and least-known holiday destinations. The troubles of the 1990s prevented the development of the mass tourism that dominates nearby Gambia. Now is the time for travel in Sierra Leone and it remains an exciting journey into undiscovered Africa. Holidays to Sierra Leone are most definitely for the more adventurous traveller; those who want to discover something fresh and well away from the beaten track.  Our guides and drivers are outstanding and they make sure that all our guests have the best experience on our Sierra Leone holidays.

I’d love to create your perfect destination experience to Sierra Leone . Give me a call and I’ll share my first-hand expertise so you get the most from your trip.

Helen's review

Before I visited myself, I didn’t know anyone else who had been to Sierra Leone. I had heard the famous Bounty advert was filmed on a beach there (showing my age now!), plus stories of chimpanzees using tools, so getting to see wildlife and scenery off the beaten track ticked several boxes for me. My travels there showed me far more than expected; beautiful forests and rivers, very English sounding place names, history of the slave trade at Bunce Island, unique ecotourism and community projects and lots of very fresh seafood.

Helen's Top Tips

  • Travel with a professional local guide and stay in locally run guesthouses. There are no big chain properties here.
  • A stay on Banana Island offers snorkelling, boat trips, and a laid-back island way of life.
  • Franco, a well-known expat, runs a guesthouse and restaurant on the peninsula – a great spot for lunch by the beach.

Why visit Sierra Leone?

You’ll find wonderful, welcoming people, 400 kilometres of  virtually deserted white sand beaches and a fascinating heritage entwined with the abolition of slavery. Inland, the country is covered with the lush evergreen forests, which are home to some interesting primates and birds  as well as alluring forest-dependent wildlife such as various species of duiker antelope; white-bellied (tree) pangolin, anomalures, water chevrotain and hammerhead bats. (Do note that population densities tend to be low and animals are skittish due to years of persecution).

Our Sierra Leone programme is a work in progress, which aims to capture the essence of this poorly known destination. Itineraries are tailor-made, drawing on our extensive, first-hand knowledge and the most up-to-date information from our local partners. Our very own Helen Kennedy is one of the UK's very few travel specialists who has personally been able to explore the country.

Whether you want to retrace the footsteps of freed slaves returning to Africa, watch the sunset from a deserted beach, drop into a Krio village in the hills behind Freetown , or head inland to Gola and Tiwai in pursuit of rainforest-dwelling birds and perhaps some mammals confined to the Upper Guinea ecosystem, we can arrange a trip to suit your interests.

Travel in Sierra Leone is all about connecting with the places you visit and the people who live there. English is widely spoken and you can expect a warm and genuine welcome wherever you go.

Personal connection with Sierra Leone

We can tailor-make itineraries to include specific areas or buildings with which you have a link and can concentrate on the historical and cultural aspects of the areas or ethnic groups that interest you.

First major UK tour operator to Sierra Leone

We are proud to be the first UK tour operator to have opened a programme offering a selection of Sierra Leone holidays and we are committed to promoting tourism that has a positive impact on this inspiring and beautiful country. Local guides and community-run guesthouses not only offer a distinctive travel experience, but also ensure that your Sierra Leone holiday is enjoyable, fulfilling and benefits the permanently resident people. In 2019, we co-hosted a group of eight of the UK's most respected travel journalists on a tour of Sierra Leone and they loved it. Contact us if you would like to see copies of their output.

Discover Beauties of Sierra Leone

After long years of civil war, peace has finally been restored throughout Sierra Leone, opening the door to tourism. For more than 20 years now, the country has been rebuilt and its wonders can once again be enjoyed by everyone. Your trip to SL will blend cultures, dance, food, people. But also nature, wildlife beaches and islands. There is so much to do, so much to see, so much to experiment.

History and Culture in Freetown

Located on the peninsula on the estuary of the Sierra Leone River, Freetown is a port city and the capital of Sierra Leone.

It’s known for its beaches and historical role in the transatlantic slave trade. The City is built on a historic and heritage ambiance, Freetown presents diverse and unique cultures with warmed and welcoming people. Its famous old town’s centuries-old Cotton Tree is a historical symbol of emancipation not only of Freetown but of Sierra Leone as a whole.

Many cultural attractions are worth a visit, as the St George’s Cathedral, the German Heidelberg Cement factory, the National Museum with its De Ruyter stone, the Maroon Church, the Foulah Town Mosque and the main market. On the waterfront is the King’s Yard Gate, through which former slaves walked to freedom. Its gigantic natural harbour and Queen Elizabeth II Quay are home to huge international ships. At night, Freetown is a real capitale, vibrant and exciting. You will be surprised by the incredible atmosphere of the frenetic parties in the nightclubs of the capitale.

Nature and Wildlife

Located in West Africa, bordered by Liberia and Guinea, the country lies at the foot of the Atlantic Ocean. Sierra Leone is a beautiful country surrounded with hills, valleys, lagoons and even mangroves. It is abundantly covered with forests with intense foliage, as well as hills and mountains, the highest of which is Loma Mansa (1948 meters).

The beauty of our nature is protected and you can enjoy its authenticity in Gola Forest Reserve, Kangari or Kambui Hills Forest and Outamba Killimi national park. Our friendly chimpanzees will welcome you in Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Initially established to enforce wildlife laws and rescue and rehabilitate orphaned chimpanzees, the Sanctuary has grown into a diverse conservation organization.Caring for close to 100 chimpanzees on-site, Tacugama is also actively engaged offsite in community outreach, wildlife field research, environmental sustainability, conservation education and alternative livelihoods programs.

The Gola Forest is the largest area of lowland rain forest remaining in Sierra Leone, and is one of the most important sites for the conservation of threatened wildlife in the country. It is the largest track of closed canopy, lowland rain forest in Sierra Leone.

Beaches and Islands

This country is also famous for its heavenly beaches where you can lie on and sunbathe, taste fish specialities, or make all sorts of watersports. From « Lumley Beach » in the center of Freetown, to the peaceful white sands Tokeh Beach, by the ocean breeze, don’t miss Lakka Beach and its lobsters specialities, neither River Number Two Beach where the river and the ocean meet. Banana Island is one of the main attractions in Sierra Leone due to its great beauty and history. Lush forest reaches to the edge of the ocean, which means that you can scuba dive, snorkel, fish or make a boat trip and then hike in the tropic forest. The historical sites on Banana Island are linked to the colonial times and the slave trade and visitors can find informative tours to discover the role of Banana Island during the slave trade in West Africa. Tasso Island has become one of the most appealing destination in Sierra Leone. Accompanied by stunning views of ocean and tropical forest, visitors can find there many different guided tours such as bird watching, forest hikes, local fishing and exploring the colonial past of the island. Bunce Island was the largest British slave castle on the Rice Coast of West Africa. Its history will not leave you indifferent, just as its landscapes are superb.

Sierra Leone is close to the equator with a humid tropical climate, the water is warm all year round. The coastline stretches for  over 500 kilometres along the Atlantic Ocean. The country can be divided into two surfing areas: the Freetown peninsula and the  wild south. This coastal strip is interspersed with rivers and Caribbean-like beaches.  It is not the most swell-prone area, but one beach after another, mouths and rocky points create sandbanks with tricky waves like  Sussex, River Number Two or Bureh. Surfing was introduced by a French surfer in the 1980s, but the war stopped its development.  Since the end of war, surf became more and more important in the country. The inaugural event of a series of invitational surf  contests of Africa Surf International (ASI) took place in Bureh Beach (October 27 – Novembre 2, 2014). This weeklong celebration  of education and cultural diversity saw the world’s finest African and African Diaspora professional and amateur surfers compete  in the name of unity and development for Sierra Leone. “It is very important that this invitational surf series begins in Sierra Leone,”  stated ASI’s Director of Communications, Imani Wilmot.  We are also very proud of Kadiatu Kamara, the First Female Surfer of Sierra Leone, awarded with the ASI Sponsorship in 2016. She  describes her experience in the book « Afro-Surf » from Mami Wata.  The other spot is located in Turtle Islands. They are the most isolated islands in West Africa.Located in the wild south of the country,  this group of eight islands is inhabited by an ethnic group that has little contact with the outside world. One must imagine an  intact and untamed universe where nature predominates and where the impact of man is weak. The southern swell season, from  May to October, bombards the most exposed beaches. The potential is real.  Here there are no rocks or coral, only sand. produced the best waves, in particular a right-handed wave at the exit of a pass. Isolated  from the world, lovers of beachbreaks and wilderness will find here a natural paradise where the notion of adventure takes on  its full meaning. The Turtle Islands archipelago receives the southern swell from May to October.

Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa, on the Atlantic Ocean.

Day to Day Itinerary

Newark Airport to Freetown. Upon arrival in Freetown, buses will take us to our hotel; the Radisson Blu.

Today we will learn more about the history, founding of Sierra Leone by visiting the National Museum, Cotton Tree, Maroon Church and shop at Big Market.

In the morning, we will visit the historic city of Waterloo and enjoy fresh Palm Wine and Cassave Bread. We will tour the city of Waterloo, visit historic sites, and learn about the rich history of Waterloo and the role it played in the liberation of slaves.

After breakfast, we will visit the historic Freetown Lighthouse, The National Railway Museum and Historic Fourah Bay College; which was at one time considered the Athens of Africa.
