1.  Sip on rooftop cocktails at Frank’s

What is it?  Frank’s in Peckham is a festival-like outdoor bar (re-opening in the summer from May 2019), where Londoners flock to grab a drink and admire views across the city. 

Why go?  Because where better to sup a Campari and watch the sunset than the top of a multi-storey car park? If that wasn’t enough, the rooftop space is a not-for-profit venture by Bold Tendencies. They’ve hosted everything from opera to orchestras – check out their website for up-to-date events . 

2.  Climb aboard the Cutty Sark

• Ships and boats

What is it?   The world’s last surviving tea clipper. An imposing vessel, Cutty Sark now delicately perches on the Thames’s edge in Greenwich.

Why go?  The ship was nearly destroyed by a fire in 2007, but reopened to the public in 2012 after an extreme makeover. The £30 million restoration has seen her elevated three metres above the dry dock, allowing visitors to admire the 65-metre-long hull from below.

What is it?  A historic eighteenth-century market – London’s only one set in a World Heritage Site.

Why go? Open seven days a week from 10am to 5.30pm in the heart of charming Greenwich, the ever-reliable indoor market houses around 120 stalls selling jewellery, clothes, second-hand furniture, unusual gifts and general bric-à-brac. Go on Tuesday and Thursday for a greater number of antique stalls, or any other day for an arts and crafts focus. On any given day, you’ll find around 40 food and drink stalls selling street bites, sweet treats and artisanal goodies. 

4.  Spot dinosaurs in Crystal Palace Park

What is it?  This south-east London park is a popular hangout during sunny spells. It’s peppered with pretty walks, sports facilities, and ...erm, dinosaurs.  

Why go?   For the fairly incorrect-looking dinos. Hire yourself a pedalo and you’ll be able to admire the Victorian sculptures which inhabit the shores of the lake from a brand new angle. Other top reasons to visit the park include a maze and the ruins of the old Crystal Palace’s aquarium.

5.  Meet the walrus at the Horniman Museum

What is it?  A popular museum opened by tea trader John Horniman in 1902, best known for its taxidermied animals (the most famous being an over-stuffed walrus).

Why go?  Far from stuffy, t his south London gem allows visitors to interact with many of the artefacts displayed (some can even be held or tried on). Aside from impressive anthropology and natural history collections, the museum also boasts 16 acres of beautiful gardens.  

6.  Climb the roof at the O2 arena

What is it?   Built as the Millennium Dome to mark the year 2000, these days the O2 Arena is best known for being a major live music venue.

Why go?  It welcomes amazing artists from all over the world, so there’s that of course. But the best part of the O2 Arena is the rooftop. Book a dusk slot for Up at the O2 – a 52-metre climb – and look westward for the most spectacular view of the city.  

7.  Eat street food at Maltby Street Market

What is it?  This  bustling weekend market in Bermondsey is a foodie paradise with a community feel.

Why go?   Nestled  around the atmospheric Victorian rail arches of the Ropewalk you’ll find around 30 artisan food and drink traders selling everything from craft beer to Mozambique-style peri-peri meats. Top tip: it’s open from 10am Saturday and 11am Sunday –  beat the crowds and don’t leave it too late to visit.

8.  Have a boogie at Rivoli Ballroom

What is it?  This restored 1950s ballroom is the last of its kind in London, with a meticulously preserved Grade II-listed art deco interior. 

Why go?  There are all sorts of events hosted beneath the chandeliers: chill out at a pop-up cinema screening or make the most of the sprung dancefloor at their regular funk, disco and salsa nights. 

9.  Admire art deco Eltham Palace

What is it? Two palaces for the price of one. Visit for the remains of a Tudor palace and the impressive Great Hall but don’t miss the art deco mansion next door. 

Why go?  The biggest draw is the art deco property built adjoining the Great Hall in 1936 by textiles heir Stephen Courtauld. The furniture and fittings look like a film set – check out the pink leather chairs, ornate black and silver doors and moulded maple veneer in the dining room, or the onyx and gold-plated taps in Virginia’s glamorous vaulted bathroom. The house was way ahead of its time when it came to mod cons, including underfloor heating, ensuite bathrooms and a quirky vacuum-cleaning system.

What is it? A lively selection of restaurants and indie businesses operating out of an eclectic jumble of shipping containers.

Why go? On site there’s a greenhouse space for communal dining and a changing schedule of music and events. Don’t miss  Smoke & Salt  – the celebrated restaurant serving small plates that go big on technical skill and flavour.

Why go?  For fabulous views over the south London skyline and a cracking menu of aperitivos, natural wines and tricolore-flying bar snacks. Take three pals and you can share the entire menu between you for £30 a head. 

12.  Explore Dulwich Picture Gallery

What it is? Lending weight to the idea that the best things come in small packages, this (relatively) bijou building is the oldest public art gallery in the UK.

Why go? Its bright spaces house a brilliant collection including Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin and Gainsborough. It has recently branched out with an annual pavilion commission, just to give the Serpentine a run for its money, and its temporary shows are more than worth a trip across town for.

13.  Dance at the CLF Art Café

What is it? Saved from demolition in 2007, the CLF Art Café is a multi-floored arts and music venue that has thrived as a warehouse-style club by night and a top exhibition space during the day.

Why go? Top promoters consistently bring in some of the best DJ names, leaning primarily towards house, deep techno, garage and disco. The Bussey also hosts The South London Soul Train, making it one of the best venues in London for funk and soul.

14.  Slurp noodles at Silk Road

What is it?   A canteen-style Chinese restaurant churning out favourites from the north-west frontier province of Xinjiang.

Why go? Its winningly-priced menu of hearty, chilli-spiked stews, belt noodles and shish skewers for just £1 a go. At £28, the ‘special big plate chicken’ can comfortably feed two, but we recommend taking along a few extra pals and going in on some dumplings too.

15.  Set sail for the National Maritime Museum

What is it?  You'll find the National Maritime Museum right in the heart of the Royal Museums Greenwich. It also includes the Queen’s House next door, historic clipper Cutty Sark, and the Royal Observatory.

Why go? The collection includes works of art and incredible treasures from centuries of naval history, but most remarkable is the ‘Nelson, Navy, Nation’ section. Here, you can check out the actual clothes Nelson was wearing when he was fatally wounded on board HMS Victory.

16.  Sip cocktails at Funkidory

What is it?  A cute little neighbourhood cocktail bar-slash-record shop on the corner of Peckham Rye, founded by husband-and-wife duo and London hospitality industry veterans  Sergio and Anna. 

Why go?  For the homely atmosphere, on-the-money tunes and fun menu of inventive cocktails, natural wines and craft beer - you’ll also find plenty of local offerings from the likes of Kanpai and Brick Brewery on there.

17.  Hunt for antiques at Bermondsey Square Market

What is it? Situated at the end of buzzy  Bermondsey Street , this lesser-known market takes over the south London square every Friday.

Why go? Locals flock here like magpies to trawl around 200 stalls for bargain china, silver, furniture, glassware and pottery. Sure, not everything here would have David Dickinson in a tizz, but sifting the fab from the tat is all part of the fun.

18.  Watch a film at the Ritzy

What is it? One of south London’s oldest picture palaces (it originally opened in 1911), today the Ritzy keeps a little of its glamorous old-fashioned interior across its five screens. 

Why go?  As well as a well-balanced line-up of blockbuster and independent films, the Ritzy has two bars, one offering a view across Windrush Square, the other tucked upstairs and playing host to an array of club nights, stand-up shows and free gigs.

19.  Enjoy classic bistro dining at Llewelyn’s

• Contemporary European

What is it? A cosy European neighbourhood restaurant in Herne Hill.

Why go?  Where do we start? The interiors are stylish yet unshowy, the drinks list includes extremely well curated, and the service is impeccable. Best of all is the hearty European food: from meltingly tender Hereford beef-shin rag ù  atop creamy polenta to a sexed-up niçoise salad filled with confit rabbit meat.

20.  Take the plunge at Brockwell Lido

• Sport and fitness

What is it? A glorious 50-metre pool surrounded by art deco Grade II-listed buildings. Check their Facebook page for pool temperature updates (useful during the chilly months) and up-to-date opening hours. 

Why go? Not only can you embrace the great outdoors and swim alfresco, but the poolside Lido Café  is light, bright and has a short but hearty menu which spans everything from breakfast to burgers. 

21.  Order knockout pasta at Artusi

What is it? A simple, sophisticated Italian with accomplished dishes and a carefully chosen drinks list. 

Why go?  There’s a confidently short menu – full of punchy propositions such as smoked ox heart with romesco sauce plus outstanding own-made pasta and wickedly good ice cream. It’s a classy venture on Peckham’s poshest street.

22.  Explore seven-storeys of culture at Peckham Levels

• Event spaces

What is it? This former car park has been transformed into a seven-storey arts space, showcasing the best of the local artistic talent and indie businesses. 

Why go?  You could happily get lost here for days. Inside you’ll find music venue Ghost Notes, a cocktail bar, yoga studio, and all manner of creative start-ups, plus more delicious food traders than you can shake a seitan sausage at. 

23.  Grab a bite at Brixton Village and Market Row

What is it? Two popular indoor markets that have established themselves as epicentres for London’s culinary scene, housing nearly 130 independent traders.

Why go? This fertile foodie ground is home to the likes of Franco Manca  and Honest Burgers , both of which started in Brixton Village before multiplying across London. Aside from food, a stroll through the arcades will reveal a  treasure trove of shops  selling clothing, jewellery, art, music and much more. 

24.  Queue for a croissant at Toad Bakery

What is it? A cult Camberwell bakery with inventive pastries that inspire queues round the block come Saturday morning. 

Why go? To sample its signature cornbread croissant, a genius invention featuring gorgeously buttery layers wrapped around rich, meltingly cheesy cornbread – the salty older sister that the almond croissant wishes she could be.

25.  Dance all night at Phonox

• House, disco and techno

What is it?  A Brixton club founded by Andy Peyton, the nightlife expert behind previous London big hitters like XOYO and The Nest (RIP). 

Why go? For its late opening hours (usually 4am on weekends) and excellent ‘4 Fridays at Phonox’ series, which has seen the likes of Yung Singh, Logic1000, DJ Tennis and HÖR Berlin take up month-long residencies at the club in recent months. 

26.  Have a South African braai at Kudu

• South African

What is it?  A good-looking restaurant specialising in South African-inspired small plates in Peckham. 

Why go? Dishes here are packed with flavour from open flame and cast iron skillets – order anything that’s been cooked in a pot or by fire – especially the BBQ ‘braai’ lamb neck with a cheese and herb crust.

27.  Catch a niche horror flick at Deptford Cinema

What is it? This charming little 44-seater screen is run as a non-profit community project by local residents, who tend to favour classics, obscure horror and intriguing foreign films.

Why go?  It’s the best place to be inspired by off-the-wall cinema. Look out for its brilliant regular events such as Latin American film night, Sci-fi Sundays, and inventive seasons that take place throughout the year.

Lady’s Guide to the Best of South London

There’s a lot going on in south London. Since moving to this part of the city, I’ve discovered great London neighborhoods and places to eat, drink, and explore. If you’re wondering where to go in this area of the UK capital, read on for A Lady in London’s guide to south London.

South London

The phrase “south London” refers to the area south of the Thames. It’s a broad term and not always a precise one.

Some areas are technically south of the river, but are considered east or west London. Richmond is a good example of this.

Others are technically north of the river, but because of the bends in its path, they sit farther south than some parts of south London. The Isle of Dogs is one of them.

But generally speaking, anywhere south of the Thames is in south London.

It encompasses a wide variety of neighborhoods and geographies, from the South Bank with its big attractions to up-and-coming areas like Deptford that are popular with hipsters.

North London vs South London

There’s a big rivalry between north and south London, and born-and-raised Londoners will often tell you there’s a cultural divide.

From food to football teams, transport links to trendy bars, both areas claim they have it better. It’s the subject of many a debate, and a lot of locals have strong opinions.

Which is why it’s nice to be an outsider. As an expat, I like being able to see the best in both north and south London. Having lived north, west, central, and south, I also like to think I’ve had a pretty broad experience of the city.

I didn’t spend a lot of time in south London before moving here, but now that I live in the area I’m enjoying discovering a lot of places I didn’t know existed.

How to Get Here

One of the reasons so many parts of south London remained a gap in my knowledge for so long is that the tube doesn’t serve the area as well as it serves the rest of London.

While there are tube stations in places like Brixton, Clapham, and Wimbledon, a lot of south London is off the Underground grid.

But since moving here I’ve discovered that it’s easy to get around by train, bus, and Overground. I wish I hadn’t been so intimidated by venturing off the Underground for so long, but I’m glad I’ve made up for lost time since buying my flat .

If you want to explore south London, it’s easy to use the TFL website, Google Maps, or Citymapper to figure out which transport links are the best for where you’re coming from and going to.

It always surprises me how fast and easy it is to get from central to south London, and how much faster it can be than getting from one place in central London to another.

Where to Go in South London

So where should you go in south London? There are a lot of options for places to explore, from areas with visitor attractions to neighborhoods where you can live like a local.

There are leafy villages and urban hotspots, picture galleries and royal palaces .

South London Neighborhoods

Brixton is a multicultural area with vibrant markets and a great nightlife scene. It’s your area if you like creative spaces and a good evening out.

Brockley is an under-the-radar south London neighborhood with lots of street art and a park with views. It’s your ideal spot if you like to get away from the obvious places.

Camberwell is home to art galleries, parks, and independent cafes. It’s for you if you’re artsy and like a unique coffee shop.

Dulwich is a village with picture-pretty streets, a world-class art gallery, and lovely parks . It’s perfect if you like beautiful houses and want to get away from the bustle of the city.

East Dulwich

East Dulwich has a great high street with lots of shops and restaurants. There’s a fun Saturday market, too. It’s just the place if you want some retail therapy and a good lunch.

Forest Hill

Forest Hill is known for its walrus (trust me). Beyond that, it has fun cafes and gardens. It’s great if you want to see a local area and visit a unique museum.

Greenwich is bursting with maritime history and royal residences.

From the Royal Observatory to the Queen’s House and the National Maritime Museum, it’s perfect if you like museums and history. My self-guided Greenwich walk can show you around, too.

Herne Hill is known for its Sunday market and big park. It has great pubs and restaurants, too. It’s ideal if you want to experience a local neighborhood and see views of the city’s skyscrapers.

Kingston upon Thames

Kingston upon Thames feels like a town in its own right. It’s on the river and has good historic atmosphere. It’s for you if you want to get off the beaten path.

London Bridge

London Bridge has great restaurants and nightlife, and is conveniently located in the middle of London. It’s ideal if you want to stay close to north London but still get a feel for the south.

Nunhead is an under-the-radar area with an otherworldly cemetery and cool bars. It’s for you if you want to live like a local and explore unique sites.

Peckham is one of south London’s hipster meccas. It’s known for its nightlife, including rooftop bars with views of the city skyline. It’s just the place if you like to party.

Richmond is an upscale area with lots of shops, riverside pubs, and green spaces. It’s the perfect spot if you like exploring side streets and walking along the river.

Rotherhithe

Rotherhithe is steeped in history. It’s known for being the site from which the Mayflower ship departed London for America in 1620. It’s a great place if you like American history.

The South Bank is home to the London Eye and other big attractions. It’s the ideal spot if you want to see the sights or go to the theater.

Vauxhall is transforming faster than almost any other London neighborhood. It has unique cafes and nightlife, as well as a hidden lavender garden. It’s good if you want to stay central and explore a rapidly evolving area.

Wimbledon is best known for tennis , but the village is worth a trip at any time of year. It’s perfect if you like a good high street, pubs, and green space.

South London Attractions

In addition to places in the areas listed above, south London has individual attractions that are worth visiting.

Eltham Palace is a historic royal residence and Ham House is a National Trust property in London with great gardens.

As far as markets go, south London has some of the best in the city. Borough Market and Maltby Street Market are two of London’s most exciting food markets.

For green spaces, Kew Gardens is one of the world’s premier botanical gardens, Clapham Common is great for festivals, and Crystal Palace Park has a quirky collection of dinosaur sculptures roaming its islands.

The Cutty Sark – Ahoy There

The Cutty Sark is a must-see place to visit in South London. It is a fascinating experience to explore a ship designed for speed and built in 1869. As a Clipper Ship, The Cutty Sark helped revolutionise trade transportation by water. 

After a varied life at sea, The Cutty Sark returned to the UK. Her main mast is 153 feet high and has 11 miles of rigging. 

If you fancy yourself as a sailor or want to experience the dizzy heights, try the Rig Climb and experience the spectacular views. The price is £52.00 for adults and £43.00 for children (10 – 17 years).

Other activities include taking the helm and imagining what life would be like sailing the oceans.

Greenwich Market – Arts and Crafts

London has no shortage of markets, such as Borough Market and, Jubilee Market, Covent Garden . South London also has a charismatic market.

Greenwich Market opened in 1737 with 60 stallholders selling their wares. In 1831, it moved to its indoor location near the Cutty Sark.

Today, the market is a fabulous mix of stalls, with plenty of independent stalls selling handmade quality crafts. Wandering around the colourful market is a pleasurable experience, and enticing food aromas draw you to the street food stalls.

The Globe Theatre – A Replica of Shakespears Original Globe

The Globe Theatre would not be here if it weren’t for Sam Wannamaker. After a trip to London in search of the site of the original 1599 Shakespeare Globe, all he could find was a small plaque on the wall. Disappointed, Sam wrote, ‘He needs, and we need, something more substantial than that.’ He set about making it so.

Completed in 1997, The Globe Theatre is London’s only thatched roof. It is an outstanding work of art built with an oak frame using traditional techniques. The twenty-sided design creates an entirely immersive experience. 

Performance prices range from £5.00 to £65.00 .

Several tour options are available. A Globe Experience & Tour is £27.00 for adults and £18.00 for children.

Since its creation between 1852 and 1855, the vision for Crystal Palace Park was always to leave a mark on people, impress, educate, inspire, and entertain. All of which it successfully achieves. 

The park is English Heritage and Grade II Listed. It has 200 acres for kids to explore and burn off energy in the open spaces and playground. 

There is the Dinosaur Court for Jurassic Park fans, with large-scale dinosaurs hiding in the bushes and water since 1854. You can hire pedalos and rowing boats.

There is a 1,100 square metre roller skating park , a giant maze, a museum, and plenty of beautiful picnic spots. There is a small city farm where children can pet the animals .

Crystal Palace Park is an excellent free place to visit in South London for a fun day with the family.

Imperial War Museum – Helping Not To Forget

The Imperial War Museum opened in 1917 during the First World War as an archive of events and stories from the people who lived and fought during the war.

The museum found its permanent and current home in 1936. Based on six floors, you will see several exhibitions, including the Holocaust Galleries, The First and Second World War Galleries and the Extraordinary Heros Gallery. 

The museum has a strong, award-winning, educational message that is great for all the family.

The Imperial War Museum is open daily and free to visit ; however, booking a time slot online is necessary.

The Royal Observatory – Greenwich Mean Time and Prime Meridian

Charles II established a Royal Commission for the first publicly funded science observatory. In 1676, the Royal Astronomer started essential research that eventually led to a universal means of navigation, timekeeping, cartography and a means of plotting longitude.

In 1884, The Royal Observatory became the official Prime Meridian or Longitude 0° 0′ 0”, and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) became the official international system for timekeeping.

In 1960, the observatory opened to the public. In 2007, after significant investment, it reopened as a state-of-the-art gallery and education centre.

When visiting, you can straddle the Prime Meridian line, check out the UK’s largest telescope and observe the stars in the planetarium. View the instruments of the original astronomical pioneers and marvel at their groundbreaking work.

Visiting the Royal Observatory is free for members, or £18.00 for adults and £9.00 for children.

Rivoli Ballroom – Boogie the Night Away

The Rivoli Ballroom is one of the last 1950s-style ballrooms remaining in London. Featuring a sprung floor and a vintage-style look, it is a popular choice for TV shows, including the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing and the Muppets.

It is a beautiful venue brimming with history and character. The unpretentious, relaxed vibe is perfect for a night out with granny, mates, or a date.

Events include themed Discos, Northern Soul, Latin & Salsa, Jive, a pop-up cinema, and several one-off events.

Prices vary depending on the event. An example is the 70s and 80s Disco Night is from £16.00.

Rivilo is a great place to visit in London. It is diverse, and you can relax, let yourself go, dress up or wear jeans and T-shirts.

The Oval – Birthplace of The First Ashes

The Oval opened in 1845 when Surrey County Cricket Club made it their home. In 1880 The Oval became the first place to host an international test match, and in 1882, the first-ever Ashes took place at the ground. Unfortunately, England lost.

The famous gas holders have overlooked the ground since 1847. In particular, constructed in 1853, cylinder No.1 is Grade II listed.

• An extra special tour is an Afternoon Tea Tour. Tours are on a match day. Watch Surrey play and take a behind-the-scenes tour before enjoying an award-winning afternoon tea. Prices start at £55.00 per person.

Black Cultural Archives – Documenting the History of African and Caribbean People in the UK

The Black Cultural Archives ‘ mission is to collect and preserve African and Caribbean history in the UK. Since its start in 1981, the collection has remained unwavering in its support of its community.

Following the Second World War and the arrival of the Windrush generations, many new arrivals were not made welcome, mainly because of the colour of their skin. The Black Cultural Archives documents their struggles and triumphs and many of the positive influences the communities brought with them and still contribute today.

Entrance to the archives is £5.00 and £3.00 concession.

Black Cultural Archives is an interesting place to visit in South London. It holds regular informative, inspiring exhibitions with audio and visual elements. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and there’s a lively cafe.

M. Manze – Pie ‘n Mash

M. Manze features in our Brunch Spots at London Bridge , and since the oldest eel and pie house has two shops in South London, it seems a must-visit. They have one in Peckham, which opened in 1927, and one in Sutton since 1998.

Pie & Liquor is £4.15 to eat in.

If you’re looking for a taste of authentic, hearty London food or a touch of nostalgia, M. Manze is a place to go.

London’s famous attractions and museums have, in my opinion, nothing on the city’s hidden gems .

From East London to the West End, you’ll find plenty of secret things to do, like for instance, checking out the Leicester Square sculpture trail .

Many hidden gems in South London only await our curious eye – street food markets tourists visiting London for the first time will probably never see, secret gardens, medieval sites.. .

Since we’ve told you here about some really cool hidden gems in North London , the West and the East End, now’s the time to wrap it up with all the secret, unusual places you can visit if you want to tread off the beaten path!

If you’ve been here before, you know that despite having to work on the blog, Pinterest and other Flipboard posts, I would rather walk around in search of new secret places.

From hidden gems in Hackney to Brick Lane’s cafes and street art pieces, I need to break away from work, from business life, and just rest in secret spots.

By unusual and hidden spots, what you can understand are either places that are very local, and that only Londoners really visit/eat at, or secret Japanese gardens, colorful houses, cobbled streets – that kind of place.

If you’re looking for the best things to do in South London around Brixton, Lambeth, Crystal Palace, all those vibrant neighborhoods, you’ve landed exactly where you need to be!

Best Hidden Gems in South London: Ruskin Park, Lambeth

First up, in Denmark Hill Lambeth, we have Ruskin Park, which despite being one of South London’s secret spots , is very instagrammable.

The well-maintained gardens are a sight, beautiful with their tree-lined pathways and flower beds, but I have to say one of its highlights is its pergola.

I, for one, love pergolas – the Hampstead Pergola & Hill Gardens are one of my favorite places to relax in London.

Ruskin Park feels peaceful, and from its portico shelter to the pergola and the on-site cafe, it makes for a beautiful park to visit.

Best Things to Do in South London: Visit the Horniman Museum & Gardens

I’ve mentioned the Horniman Museum and Gardens quite a few times here on The Working Line, and the Forest Hill Museum is, again, worth a visit.

If you’re looking for secret gardens, you’ll be delighted to discover a sunken garden at the Horniman Museum as well as a stunning English-style garden.

The Museum itself revolves around anthropology, music, and natural history and is one of the most unusual museums to visit in London when you consider its collection of taxidermy animals.

Plus, the gardens are a perfect spot to admire immaculate views of London – and the on-site cafe will allow you to relax while enjoying a great cup of coffee with a cookie!

Beautiful Secret Places in South London: Painted Hall, Greenwich

One of Greenwich’s hidden gems, the Painted Hall is often referred to as the Sistine Chapel of the UK – art lovers, you won’t want to leave this place.

Located inside the Old Royal Naval College, whose architecture is nothing if not mind blowing, the Painted Hall was painted by Sir James Thornhill between 1707 and 1726.

The paintings showcased there depict mythological scenes as well as representations of English history, and the intricate details, well…

You can pop by to visit the Painted Hall, or you can book for a guided tour inside the beautiful Baroque interiors.

One of the most iconic buildings in London, the Royal Albert Hall is renowned for hosting gorgeous ballet performances, classical concerts, live orchestras and many more upscale events.

Located in South Kensington, the Royal Albert Hall is a masterpiece of Victorian architecture, a round building with an incredible dome – all of which can be visited on tours.

These tours show and explain the history and beauty of the Royal Albert Hall, which was gifted from Prince Albert to Queen Victoria.

That’s why you’ll be able to see during a tour the Queen’s private suite, the Royal Retiring Room, and the auditorium in addition to being able to get breakfast, brunch, coffee, and more at the on-site cafes.

One of the most beautiful museums in London, the Dulwich Picture Gallery is located in the Dulwich area, and was opened to the public for the first time in 1817.

The art collections there are made of European Old Master paintings, such as Rubens, Canaletto or Rembrandt…

Located in South East London, Shad Thames is one of the oldest streets in London – and one I love to visit to feel submerged with history.

Indeed, Shad Thames is one of the very magical places that have preserved their cobbled streets and 19th century warehouses.

I was born in Troyes , a medieval French city where there is a plethora of warehouses still kept intact for the beauty’s landscape and history.

As such, you can understand why visiting historically maritime neighborhoods, and other cobbled streets and mews would be so important to my well-being.

Shad Thames also offers some pretty secret passageways and alleys , as well as independent restaurants and coffee shops perfect to pop by before or after breakfast.

And since there are lots of cafes in London Bridge nearby for brunch or just coffee, Shad Thames could be the perfect background for the start of a romantic date .

Best Things to Do in South London: Morden Hall Park

In search of hidden gems in South London that no one really pays attention to, you will perhaps want to give a try to the Modern Hall Park, a National Trust park located in Morden.

We’re a bit further than Central London with this one, and way further from Brixton and such areas, but the historical buildings at Morden Hall Park will make for a perfect day in London.

Morden Hall itself is an 18th century country house in the heart of the park, and you can also see other historic homes around, notably the Stableyard with its cafe.

If you’re one who loves finding places to see flowers in London during the warm months, check out the landscaped rose garden at Morden Hall Park.

Anyone who enjoys spending time in nature with love the scenic beauty of this South London hidden gem , with its wetlands area, meadows, and the River Wandle passing by.

Best Hidden Gems in South London: Eltham Palace

Eltham Palace and its park both date back to the Middle Ages, with the Great Hall built in the 1470s.

Beyond simple yet astonishing medieval decor, Eltham Palace was renovated in the 1930s by the Courtauld family, therefore displays incredible examples of art deco architecture and decoration.

Elegant, sophisticated, Eltham Palace can be visited and also offers incredible gardens including a rock garden and a beautiful bridge from which you can snap a few gorgeous shots of the palace.

However, it really is the Historic Rooms and living quarters that will take your breath away – and whether you’re looking for hidden gems in South London to visit solo or an activity to do with kids, everyone will enjoy the visit.

Best Hidden Gems in South London: Chislehurst Caves

Chislehurst Caves bears a name that could seem far from Central London , but is actually quite easy to access from London’s train stations.

The caves date back to the early 19th century and prove beautiful hidden treasures for anyone who loves nature and history.

Indeed, Chislehurst Caves were originally chalk and flint mines and were later repurposed as air raid shelters during WWII.

The stalactites and stalagmites you can admire in the caves have been forming since thousands of years, truly mindblowing sites that surely make Chislehurst Caves one of the best hidden gems in South London.

Best Hidden Gems in South London UK: Brockwell Park

Brockwell Park not only offers spacious green spaces, but is also rooted in history since it used to be farmland in the 19th century, and transformed at the end of the century into a park.

For whoever loves finding beautiful buildings in London, Brockwell Hall is a Grade II-listed building nestled into the park, a stunning place that hosts an art gallery and a coffee shop.

It’s also one of the best places to see the sunset in London over the clear views of the skyscrapers – an incredible hidden gem you’d definitely do well to visit.

One of Brockwell Park’s highlights is its lido – other than swimming pools, there aren’t many places to go swimming outdoors in London and the lido mixes the best of both worlds.

Best Hidden Gems in South London: The Rookery, Streatham Common

One thing I am obsessed with is Japanese gardens, and while The Rookery in Streatham Common isn’t a clearly-defined Japanese garden, it is still decorated with elements that would remind you of places like Kyoto Garden.

The Rookery’s beauty resides in its quiet pond, its beautiful pergola, wildlife and structured landscapes.

Part of the historic garden is very formal, very English, while the other part feels wild, of the kind of wilderness that would on the other hand remind you of Richmond Park.

If you’re ever looking for free rooftops in London , I would invite you to change your plans and maybe admire the direct views on the city’s skyscrapers from The Rookery.

Another highlight of The Rookery is the Victorian Rock garden, made from rock formations, alpine plants and, wait for it – its tiny waterfall!

Best Hidden Gems in South London: Crystal Palace Park

One of the most beautiful parks in London, Crystal Palace Park is located in the Crystal Palace area, which you can reach quite easily with the Overground.

One of the park’s highlights is the Dinosaur court (pictured above), which features a few life-size dinosaur statues created in the 19th century.

The Crystal Palace Park Maze is another good reason to visit the park.

Indeed, there aren’t many mazes and labyrinths in London, are there, and this beautifully-curated one makes for a very secret place to visit solo, with kids or with your date.

While Crystal Palace Park is quite huge, I would definitely recommend spending a few hours there in search of the landscaped gardens, cute cafes and the fishing lake.

If you get hungry, you can get a light breakfast or brunch at one of the on-site cafes, too, so it really makes for a perfect day in South London!

Beautiful Secret Places in South London: Crystal Palace Subway

One of my favorite hidden gems in South London is the Crystal Palace Subway, a historic underground passageway which was built in 1865 and closed in 1954 as it became increasingly less used.

The Crystal Palace Subway showcases some of the most beautiful architecture in London, though, with Victorian design, arched ceilings, decorative tiles and wrought-iron details.

This magical place is unfortunately only occasionally open for tours and various events, which is why I would recommend you check online for the next events.

A visit to the Crystal Palace Subway is still a really secret thing to do in London when you get tired of beautiful St Paul’s and Oxford Street , though, and one that will prove very rewarding.

Best Hidden Gems in South London: Deptford Market Yard

About 25 to 30 mns away from Greenwich DLR station, you will find the picturesque neighborhood of Deptford, and in there, the Deptford Market Yard.

One of the most secret street food markets in London, Deptford Market Yard offers brunch, sushi, vegan dishes, pizza and much more.

What I prefer in this area are all the boutiques and unique shops – from home decor to clothes and accessories, you’ll find many a local business offering things to buy that tourists will sadly never get to see.

It’s one of the perks of living in London, isn’t it – and Deptford Market Yard is also a great spot to visit in South London for live performances, exhibitions and other cultural events.

Best Hidden Treasures in South London UK: Brixton Village

Brixton Village is also known as Brixton Village Market, and I have to admit this is one of the only places I visit to buy shea butter in London.

Like, raw shea butter along with Caribbean food, African, Asian, Latin American and various European dishes.

But since a great part of the Brixton area is Jamaican, a good reason to visit Brixton Village to discover more about the culture, from the cuisine to the unique vintage, spice and clothes shops.

Brixton Village Market, and the whole area in general is very lively, vibrant with colors, food and culture – there are plenty of amazing cafes in Brixton to visit to work, chill, or have incredible pastries + coffee combos.

Nearby, you have some of London’s best budget shops – Savers, Poundland, and independent, unique shops are all to be found at Brixton, a lively hub in the city!

Best Hidden Gem Restaurants & Street Foods in South London

Best hidden gem food spots in south london: apple blue patisserie, balham.

One of South London’s best hidden food gems, Apple Blue Patisserie in Balham caters to all kinds of diners – whether you need halal brunch or vegan treats, you’ll find them there.

The Apple Blue is not only one of the best restaurants in Balham ; it’s also very instagrammable, and you’ll be able to taste there freshly-baked croissants, macarons , layered cakes…

The whole shindig.

If you’ve been here before, you know I’m French and am always searching for new French patisseries in London .

While the Apple Blue is not properly French, the quality of their croissants , pains au chocolat and other goodies makes up for its not-Frenchness.

Best Hidden Food Gems in South London: Mercato Metropolitano, Elephant & Castle

Mercato Metropolitano now has several branches in London, namely one in Mayfair and the original one in Elephant & Castle.

Located just a stone’s throw away from Elephant & Castle, Mercato Metropolitano is one of the only places you can still get lunch under £5 in London.

With winding pathways, casual dining areas, and a secret coffee shop slash bar with mannequins and a piano inside, Mercato Metropolitano caters to artists at heart.

From pho to proper Neapolitan pizza , fresh cheese and other artisanal products, that’s a place where you can come with your friends in London to attend live music performances and other cool events.

Best Hidden Gem Restaurants in South London UK: Pho City, Greenwich

I used to work at St Christopher’s Inns in Greenwich, and loved my time living there because it meant I could really go out and discover all the hidden treasures of the area.

Namely, I quickly understood Greenwich is one of the prettiest villages in London – if not a village, at least a place that feels like it.

When you’re walking around , you get hungry – that’s the rule, and that’s when you should visit Pho City, close to the DLR station.

Pho City probably offers some of the best pho in London , with authentic flavors and those dishes we love so much – of course, pho, but also bo bun, banh mi, and various rice and noodle dishes.

Finding a great banh mi in London is harder than it looks, and whether you’re dining in or popping by to take away and have a picnic close to Cutty Sark with a view of the Canary Wharf skyscrapers, you’ll love Pho City.

Best Hidden Food Gems in South London: Ruby’s of London, Greenwich Market

Yes, Ruby’s of London does offer some of the best vegan doughnuts in London, but that’s not all.

Nestled inside the quaint Greenwich Market, with all its secret alleys and boutiques, Ruby’s of London is famous for its vegan and gluten free desserts.

Delicious cupcakes, blondies, cookies, brownies and even wedding and birthday cakes – Ruby’s has it all.

The bakery slash pastry shops has a few branches scattered around London, but if you’re looking for places to eat in Greenwich, that’s a good place to start.

Brown, black, white, red and pink cupcakes, gorgeous cookies…

The stall’s beauty may not equal all the floral cafes and restaurants we love to snap shots of, but the pastries’ quality makes up for it – big time.

Best Hidden Food Gems in South London UK: WatchHouse Cafe, Bermondsey

WatchHouse Cafe isn’t only one of the best hidden gems in South London, but in the whole of London.

Where else will you find a coffee shop established inside a 19th century graveyard watch house?

That’s where it gets its name, and it’s interesting to note that WatchHouse Cafe Bermondsey, while it has other decently-sized coffee shops, is one of the smallest cafes in London.

Specialty coffee is to be enjoyed at one of the very few tables inside or on the terrace, from pour-over to espresso and, of course, you’ll be able to get a few delicious croissants, carrot cakes, and muffins there.

There are plenty of hidden gems in Bermondsey , such as independent cafes and restaurants, and while we’re really close to London Bridge, it’s still South London – and one of its best kept secrets.

If I may, another magical place to visit, at least from the outside, is Crystal Palace itself since it’s one of the most beautiful palaces in London .

There are of course beautiful neighborhoods in South London that offer cobbled streets, other green spaces from which you can see the view on London and many independent coffee shops and restaurants.

But this is a great start if you’re looking for secret places to tread off the beaten path!

13 Best Things To Do In South London

With all the incredible places to see , London is the kind of city you visit and never fully see it all – in fact, I think that task is almost impossible. This is why I think it’s easier to focus a visit on each of the areas of London ; with South London being no exception. Honestly, there’s a ton of spots and heaps of the best things to do in South London that are dotted all across the river. 

This makes it a fun-filled place that’s got heaps of history, gorgeous areas (like Greenwich ) and palaces , too! 

Now, you’ve probably realised that I’m totally biased? I just can’t help it, London is my favourite city and South London is a gem that I love so much. 

So, to help you get the most out of your time south of the river, I wanted to share my very favourite spots you need to explore on the first trip to South London. 

Some spots might seem obvious, whilst others a little more ‘off the beaten track’. Whatever the case, I’m sure you’ll find a fair few spots to explore whilst heading around South London.

Take a look, below, at the best things to do in South London.

1.) London Eye

You kinda can’t start off a list of best things to do in South London without mentioning the iconic London Eye – especially if you’ve never been to London before! 

Now, t he London Eye is probably one of the most recognizable landmarks in the South of London and well worth a 30-minute ride on the wheel for views all across London. 

We’ve been on it a few times (over the years of living here) and it’s always so nice.

Though my favourite time to head up is at sunset and I’d recommend you book these fast-track London Eye tickets for this time of day if you want to see the orange hues all across the city. 

Yes, it’s very popular with visitors but rightly so – the views are fantastic. Afterwards, take a stroll east (along the Thames) towards the Southbank area.

Here, you can watch a performance, visit some of the foodie spots and make the most of the seasonal fairs and markets that line the area. It’s lovely. 

If you’re lucky enough to visit on New Year’s Eve, you’ll be blown away by the immense fireworks display that we try and catch every year.

With the London Eye being the centrepiece of the show, it’s best to book tickets (to view from the street) way in advance so you get a space on the cordoned-off streets themselves.

2.) Tower Bridge

Built back in the 1800s, Tower Bridge is one of the most quintessential sights to see in London .

Of course, you can take a wander over Tower Bridge, towards the Tower of London and see the views over the River Thames. 

Oh, and don’t forget to book your Tower of London tickets if you’re heading north of the Thames. This way, you’ll be guaranteed entry. 

Not only that, nowadays you can now tour the inside of the towers themselves and discover the Tower’s fascinating history. Plus, you’ll get to stand on its glass floor and enjoy outstanding panoramic views of London from the very top walkway on Tower Bridge. 

Feeling peckish? Head over to nearby Santo Remedio for the most delicious Mexican food in South London. We love this spot for its fresh fish and tacos. Plus, they have a pretty potent bottomless brunch, too!

3.) Crystal Palace

Quite far away from the riverfront, visiting Crystal Palace is one of the best things to do in South London that’s a little away from the busier touristy spots. 

Now, one thing you can’t miss is the large dinosaurs that call Crystal Palace park home! First created as part of a Victorian-era theme park, the dinosaurs, which were restored in 2002, provide a peek into the 1850s’ understanding of palaeontology. Though, to be honest, they just look super cool and they’re probably Crystal Palace’s most famous residents. 

Also, the best part, Crystal Palace Park is totally free to visit, making it a perfect way to spend a family-friendly day out.

4.) Cutty Sark

Built back in 1869, the Cutty Sark is a British tea clipper ship that’s steeped in history (see what I did there? Steeped!). 

Now one of the last tea clippers to ever be built, it’s set pride of place right in the heart of Royal Greenwich .

Long ago, the Cutty Sark used to transport tea to England from Asia and was prized for its speedy service and luxury tea leaves that fetched quite a pretty penny! 

Nowadays, the Cutty Sark is a gorgeous museum that’s well worth an hour (or so) visit.

Plus, you can easily partner this with a visit to all the great spots in Greenwich , like the; Painted Hall and the Royal Navy College. 

Oh, and you can climb the roof of the O2 , too. Just book these tickets before arriving ! It’s such a cool experience.

5.) Maltby Street Market

A food lover’s paradise, be sure to check out the Maltby Street Market in the Bermondsey area of South London. Here, you’ll get to devour a shed load of tasty delicacies and treats from around the world.

Typically a weekend market, it has delicious street food being sold by loads of food and drinks stalls that line the route. 

Open on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am-5 pm and 11 am-5 pm, it’s a place that’s visited by locals and visitors alike. To beat the majority of the crowds, arrive early and give yourself plenty of time to pursue and devour everything in sight! 

Afterwards, for a night of immersive theatre and creative spaces, head to Waterloo and explore the Vaults . Here they host a range of theatre spots underground, right within the arches of the railway itself. It’s totally cool and you get to see some epic shows.

6.) Eltham Palace

Nestled in wider Greenwich , Eltham Palace is often forgotten in lieu of London’s more iconic palaces . That being said, it’s one of the best things to do in South London if you want to explore our city’s vast history. 

Presented to King Edward II in 1305, and later serving as King Henry VIII’s childhood home, Eltham Palace was once a royal treasure that is nowadays open to the public.

Eltham Palace is one of London’s best-kept secrets and is typically less crowded than some of London’s other attractions due to being located a train ride away from the busier Zone 1 area of Central London.

That said, it is definitely worth a visit from the well-travelled part of town to experience the English Heritage Site that has so much going for it.

Once here, make sure to explore Tudor Palace’s original moat (with the oldest working bridge in the city), the lush lavender gardens on the grounds and explore the Medieval Great Hall and Art Deco Rooms.

We loved it! 

7.) Shakespeare’s Globe

Nestled on the banks of the River Thames, not too far from the original site of the theatre, Shakespeare’s Globe is great to visit for a tour or even watching a performance. 

Originally built in 1599, the Globe theatre was destroyed in 1644, but visitors can still experience history as Shakespeare’s Globe is an incredible rebuilding of what the original Globe Theatre was like during the Elizabethan Era.

8.) Royal Observatory

Famous for having the prime meridian run through it, the Royal Observatory is located in Greenwich Park and overlooks the River Thames towards Canary Wharf.

Commissioned in 1675 by King Charles II, the Greenwich location of the Royal Observatory serves almost entirely as a museum.

Now, after the observatory’s scientific work moved to a different location. If you’re at all interested in the history of astronomy, exploration, or navigation, be sure to check it out. 

Plus, afterwards, you can head for a stroll around Greenwich Park and stop for a bite to eat in Greenwich Market that’s been around for centuries. The local food vendors serve up some real treats. 

9.) South London’s foodie spots 

Gosh, there are so many to tell you about! 

If it’s Piri-Piri chicken you’re after, head across to Casa do Frango in London Bridge. Their chicken is everything and they serve up some tasty Portuguese green wine, too. 

Alternatively, head across to Kricket Brixton for their delicious Indian-inspired dishes that are so flavourful.

Situated within the railway arches, it’s a spot that’s totally cool and so tasty. 

Finally, for some of the best gelato in London, head over to Gelataria 3Bis which serves up a treat in a cone. 

If it’s chocolate you’re after, visit Dark Sugars Cocoa House in Greenwich. Here, they’ll serve you up some incredible truffles and treats to try.

10.) Peckham 

Sometimes an overlooked area of London , visiting Peckham is one of the best things to do in South London for an evening out. 

You see, in Peckham, there’s a heap of spots to eat, have a few tipples with friends and just chill out. A totally local haunt for Londoners, you’ll be in good company on the rooftop at the Bussey Rooftop Bar .  

Also, don’t forget to check out Peckham Levels , with the art spaces and foodie vendors that focus on local enterprises. 

Finally, if you want to try some traditional pie, liquor and mash, head over to M.Manze on Peckham High Street. These lots know their stuff when it comes to pies!

11.) Richmond

Exploring Richmond is easily one of the best things to do in South London if you want a slice of nature! 

You see, Richmond has one of the few remaining deer parks in London, Richmond Park. For centuries, the deer have roamed freely and openly and you’ll easily spot them all across the park. 

Afterwards, take a ramble towards, nearby, Kew Gardens and explore the stunning grounds and Palm House, too. They even have a treetop walk that’ll take you through the trees. 

If you’ve got time, take a gander around Ham House and Garden which dates back to the 1600s. Here, you’ll be able to explore the rooms, see the world-class paintings and stroll the historic gardens. 

12.) Wimbledon 

You probably know Wimbledon for its tennis competition, yeah?

Well, that’s incredible and totally fun to visit. We’ve been a few times and it’s always been so much fun – though, we always end up with a sore head the next morning (after all the bubbles and strawberries and cream). 

If you’re not visiting around the time of Wimbledon, check out Wimbledon Common with the historic windmill that sits proudly in the greenery.

13.) Bermondsey Street

Around a 10-minute stroll from London Bridge Station, Bermondsey Street has a small-town feel even though it’s right within Central London. 

After heading to some of the bars and restaurants along the way, make sure to visit the White Cube Gallery for their seasonal exhibitions and shows. It’s a forever-changing space that we love. 

Also, for some great coffee, head to WatchHouse Bermondsey which serves up some of the best brews south of the river. 

Nestled within a historic Victorian watchhouse, it’s a cosy little spot to chill after a morning exploring South London. 

Finally, head over to the Tate Modern (a 25-minute stroll) and see some of the world’s best modern art galleries!

Looking for the best parks in South London? These are the spots you shouldn’t miss. 

During a normal summer, parks are the playground in which we enjoy basking in the sun, the spots where we festival hard, picnic and spend lazy days enjoying the greenery. 

Over the past few years, it’s become clear that parks are the glue holding us all together – they were the places where we saw the first people outside of our household and the backdrop to so many social meetups. 

Regular readers will know that South London is my stomping ground – the area where I grew up and know like the back of my hand. So when it came to picking the best parks in South London, I was rigorous and ruthless in my choices. 

Just because something is a green space, doesn’t make it a park and we’re not just going to regurgitate the same 5 spots literally everyone has heard of. Yawn.

These 23 spots vary from vast green spaces to pretty floral gardens – there’s even a cemetery turned nature reserve in there too. We’ve split the guide between South East and South West London to help you find ones nearby.

Now, let’s just hope for a summer of sunny weather and we’re good to go!

Best Parks in South East London

Crystal palace park .

Crystal Palace

Let’s start with a biggie. Crystal Palace Park is one of the best-known parks in South London… and for good reason. Created as a Victorian pleasure ground to house the long destroyed Crystal Palace it’s still a hub of London life. 

This isn’t just your average park – mooch around and you will see the former site of the Crystal Palace, Italian gardens, a maze, skate park, athletics club and, of course, those famous dinosaurs . 

Which dinosaurs you ask? The full-size models are positioned in lifelike postures around one of the park’s many lakes, naturally.

Greenwich Park

Boasting gorgeous views over to Canary Wharf and home to its own herd of free-roaming deer, it’s no wonder that Greenwich Park is a south London fave. 

It’s one of London’s Royal Parks, thanks to Greenwich’s widespread royal connections – in fact, it’s the oldest enclosed Royal Park in the UK, providing a backdrop for the rather cheeky flirtations between Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII. 

Luckily for us the park came out of it unscathed, though the same cannot be said for Boleyn. No need to dwell on that.

Today, it boasts tree-lined pathways the ‘Grammers go gaga for during blossom season and a scented herb garden you should pop into during the summer months.

Dulwich Park 

Dulwich 

It’s hard to believe that the leafy, well-landscaped environs of Dulwich Park used to be farmland, but it’s true. Prior to the park’s creation in 1890, it and the surrounding areas were farmland and meadows. 

Today it’s one of the prettiest parks in the south. It’s manicured without being too formal and with a number of different gardens including a dry garden and a winter garden for you to take a peek at. 

Want to do more than just mooch around? There’s a boating lake with pedalos and rowing boats and the tennis courts are free to use.

One Tree Hill

Honor Oak Park

Not a park per se, but rather a nature reserve tucked in the midst of Honor Oak Park, One Tree Hill i s one of South London’s prettiest hidden gems .

The woodland nature reserve is the perfect spot for a quiet walk among the trees – there are a number of paths (some steep, some not) from which to choose. 

The name’s misleading. There are many, many trees, but one noted for rumours of providing Elizabeth I with shelter as she made a journey through what was then The Great North Wood. 

One Tree Hill’s high position and hilly aspect means it also just so happens to boast some of the best views of central London .

Nunhead Cemetery 

Another leftfield entry, Nunhead Cemetery is one of our favourite spots – a place where history and nature merge to create one of the most unusual outdoor spaces in South London.

Yes, it’s a cemetery, so if you get freaked out by the sight of graves, this one’s not for you… For everyone else, it’s a rare sight – a spot where woodland has reclaimed the vast part of the cemetery. 

It says everything that a large part of Nunhead Cemetery is officially a nature reserve. Expect ivy creeping over statues, dappled light from the dense canopy and small paths that meander throughout it all.

Lloyd Park 

Lloyd Park is one of the most bucolic parks in south east London, but somehow one of its least known. 

Maybe it’s the Croydon location – perched on the outskirts of South London just at the tipping point before it becomes full-blown suburbia. 

That location is a boon and translates to 114 acres of rolling parkland, meadow and woodland for you to explore. Formerly part of the grounds of the Coombe Estate, it’s a part-landscaped, part wild playground for adults and children alike. 

Even on the busiest days, you’re guaranteed to find ample space to chill in solitude.

Brockwell Park 

Herne Hill 

Brockwell Park may not be well-known outside of the surrounding areas – a shame as this is a beaut of a park and one of the more unconventional ones you’ll find in South London. 

It was created largely by the champion efforts of MP Thomas Bristowe, who sadly died moments after the park’s opening ceremony in 1892. His efforts have been richly rewarded: today the park sits at the heart of local life. 

There’s certainly no shortage of things to do – start with the walled formal garden, BMX track, tennis courts and everyone’s favourite London lido . The green-fingered among you might also want to try your hand at growing some produce in the community greenhouse.

Peckham Rye 

Combining Peckham Rye Park and Peckham Rye Common – a visit to Peckham Rye will put 113 acres of grassland, ornamental gardens, lakes and woodland at your fingertips. 

Facilities-wise, there are a number of children’s adventure playgrounds, joined by a bowling green, skate park and community gardens – not to mention a gorgeous ornamental garden, Sexby Garden, that’s filled with a variety of roses and shrubs.

Beckenham Place Park 

Beckenham 

London’s newest green space was transformed from a golf course to a brand new park last year, complete with a 283-metre long swimming lake that quickly saw it become the talk of the town. 

Beckenham Place Park may be new but it’s already become one of south London’s go-to open air spaces, thanks to the combination of woodlands, meadows and gardens. 

It’s a beautiful spot with a rural feel that makes it difficult to believe you’re less than 9 miles from the centre of town. Plus they hold some brilliant festivals (including the cool Hospitality festival pictured above) in the park each summer.

Burgess Park 

Camberwell 

Burgess Park is one of the younger parks in South London having been created between the 1950s and 1980s. It’s got an interesting story behind it – with whole areas, including residential buildings, churches and canals removed piecemeal for the park’s creation.

The result is one of London’s biggest parks, combining open grass areas with ornamental gardens and allotments – there’s even a specified barbecue area too.

Southwark Park 

Rotherhithe 

Nestled in the area of Rotherhithe , Southwark Park is a Green Flag award-winning park dating back to 1869. It was restored in the early noughties and today is one of the nicest (not to mention little visited) parks in south east London. 

Aside from the normal grassy areas and lakes, the park is also home to two galleries, the Lake Gallery and Dilston Gallery (closed at the time of writing), each presenting innovative programmes of works by local artists.

Kelsey Park 

It’s no surprise that the leafy neighbourhood of Beckenham boasts more than its fair share of parks – this is suburbia after all. 

The former landscaped gardens of the Kelsey Manor Estate retain much of their prior glory, with extensive ornamental gardens and a series of large lakes providing the backdrop to your summer antics.

Horminan Museum Gardens 

Forest Hill 

Although it’s not necessarily a park per se, the gardens of Forest Hill’s much-loved Horniman Museum are a lovely spot to spend some time basking in the sunshine. 

The gardens are well-looked after, with sunken and display gardens that date back to the 1930s and an unusual grasslands garden among other attractions. 

The gardens also sport a rather cracking view over to central London.

Sydenham Hill Woods

Standing in the middle of Sydenham Hill Woods, it’s not hard to believe that this was once a part of the Great North Wood that stretched all the way from Deptford to South Norwood. 

In fact, Sydenham Hill Woods forms one part of the largest remaining tract of the great wood and is still one of the nicest woodlands in London . 

What it lacks in open spaces, it more than makes up for with woodland walkways, the most famous of which, Cox’s Walk is an 18th-century oak-lined path crossing the wood.

Telegraph Hill Park 

We love a park with a good view and they don’t come much better than the view at Telegraph Hill Park . From the peak of the hill you can see right across a segment of London that includes London’s cityscape of skyscrapers and even Westminster with Big Ben just a tiny tower in the distance. 

The park itself is not very big, but it is very nice. There’s tennis and basketball courts if you’re looking for a place to play some sport. They’ve also got an ornamental garden and a small pond that are lovely to walk around. 

To top it off, during the summer months they run a refreshment kiosk. Perhaps they know the only thing that could improve that view is an ice cream to eat while you take it in.

Best Parks in South West London 

Battersea park .

When it comes to London’s parks, we have a lot to thank the Victorians for… that’s never more true than in the case of Battersea Park.

The park was opened in 1858 to give the working class residents of the surrounding areas somewhere green to escape to and the same stands today (excepting those residents have become increasingly well-heeled as time has passed). 

The 200 acres of parkland somehow manages to squeeze in a range of gardens, playgrounds and a boating lake into its grounds. 

Sure, there’s a vaguely terrifying Go Ape facility, but you can enjoy much more sedate pleasures by taking a turn around the water gardens, check out the Peace Pagoda (pictured) or cycling along the designated paths.

Tooting Commons

Tooting 

No, there’s not an errant “s” in the title – there are actually two adjacent commons in Tooting , Tooting Bec Common and Tooting Graveney Common separated by Dr Johnson Avenue. 

Two commons = a lot of space to enjoy the great outdoors. 

The commons provide a natural habitat for a variety of wildlife species including mallard ducks, mute swans and dragonflies, while the lake is home to a number of wildlife birds and fish. 

The Lido is the largest freshwater swimming pool by surface area in the UK, and has been used by locals since it opened in 1906. Anyone can pay to take a dip during the summer months, but it’s exclusive to members of the South London Swimming Club in the winter.

Clapham Common 

Probably the best-known common in South London, the triangular green centre of Clapham is an oasis of quiet in a busy area. 

It’s been uncultivated ever since the time of the Domesday Book – today, people sunbathe and children play where horses would have raced and sheeps grazed in earlier times. 

In normal years, the common hosts a number of outdoor cinemas, music festivals and fairs. It’s not clear how many will be held this year, but its position as one of south west London’s nicest outdoor spots will continue unchanged.

Wandsworth Common 

There is no shortage of commons in South West London – Wandsworth Common isn’t far from its Clapham or Tooting counterparts.

Still, it brings a lot to the table – including three cricket pitches and a bowling green (a hint to the posher aspects of the surrounding area where former prime minister David Lloyd George used to live).

Aside from that, there’s a great fitness trail and the Lady Allen Adventure Playground designed as an accessible and fun space for disabled children.

Wimbledon Common 

Although it’s technically three commons, Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath, and Putney Lower Common, most people just stick to calling this large swathe of grassland Wimbledon Common. 

London’s largest common is the perfect place to womble around (yes, the 70s show of pro-recycling spec wearing raccoons is set on the common) – unlike in days of yore when it had something of a reputation as a duelling hotspot. 

Next door, the floral gardens of Cannizaro Park in Wimbledon are well worth popping in to spend some time in too.

Streatham Common & Rookery

Just around the corner from the much larger Tooting Commons, Streatham Common combines a wide stretch of grass with sloped woodland all in one space on the outskirts of Streatham . 

While the main part of the common is pretty standard fare, walk across the road from the upper eastern stretch for a surprise in the form of The Rookery . 

What were the gardens of a large manor house has been transformed into an oasis of floral landscaping, with a number of formal gardens including a White Garden and walled kitchen garden.

Richmond Park 

Richmond  

Probably one of the better known of all south London’s parks, Richmond Park is a big hit. That’s largely to do with its size – it’s massive – but also because of the herds of wild deer that run free on the grounds. 

They’re there because the park used to be the hunting grounds of the English royal family way back when (the 15th century to be precise). 

The royals have also left their mark on the park in the form of King Henry’s Mound – a hill with an extraordinary royal past, and one of the finest views of London . 

Practical Tips

• Depending on the weather you may want to take wellington boots or at least sturdy shoes. The parks can get wet and muddy – your designer heels may look good strutting on the streets of Soho but they’ll be no use here.
