Brzeszcze Travel Guide a town in Oświęcim County, the Lesser Poland Voivodeship or Malopolska, in southern Poland. Brzeszcze is located between two rivers, which determine its boundaries, the Sola in the east and the Vistula in the west, in the Oswiecim Basin. As of 2006, the town of Brzeszcze had about 12,000 citizens.

The economy of the town focuses on an anthracite coal mine “Brzeszcze-Silesia” which is the largest employer in the area and one of the biggest in Malopolskie.

Regarding Sport, there is club that was founded in 1922 by Polish refugees from the Czech Republic called Górnik Brzeszcze the main sponsor of the club in the past has been the “Brzeszcze” mine.

As from 21 April 2008 Brzeszcz has been twinned with the Italian village, Londa.

Geography of Brzeszcze

History of Brzeszcze

It was founded in the 15th century and was owned by a number of Polish citizens, such as Dominik Gherri, the physician of King Stanisław August Poniatowski.

The inhabitants of the town were mainly fishermen and farmers. The village was burned down during the Swedish invasion in 1772 as a result of the partition of Poland and was annexed to Austria.

Brzeszcze grew due to the anthracite coal mine, which was founded in the beginning of the 19th century.

During World War II the town was a stronghold of Polish resistance, helping prisoners of Auschwitz concentration camp. Prisoners of Auschwitz were also housed in a sub-camp called Jawischowitz, near the mine where they were used as forced labour. Conditions in this camp were worse than in the main one and as a result many prisoners were killed through the work they had to perform, by the German civilian mine authorities, and the SS guards.

Places to Eat in Brzeszcze

There are many restaurants covering the usual pizza to those offering local Polish traditional and regional cuisine.

Polish cuisine (Polish: kuchnia polska) is a style of cooking and food preparation originating from Poland. It has evolved over the centuries due to historical circumstances. Polish national cuisine shares some similarities with other Central European and Eastern European traditions as well as French and Italian similarities. It is rich in meat, especially pork, chicken and beef (depending on the region) and winter vegetables (cabbage in the dish bigos), and spices.

It is also characteristic in its use of various kinds of noodles the most notable of which are kluski as well as cereals such as kasha (from the Polish word kasza). Generally speaking, Polish cuisine is hearty and uses a lot of cream and eggs. The traditional dishes are often demanding in preparation. Many Poles allow themselves a generous amount of time to serve and enjoy their festive meals, especially Christmas eve dinner (Wigilia) or Easter breakfast which could take a number of days to prepare in their entirety.

The Polish national dishes are bigos; pierogi; kielbasa; kotlet schabowy (type of breaded cutlet); gołąbki (type of cabbage roll); zrazy (type of roulade); roast (Polish: pieczeń); sour cucumber soup (Polish: zupa ogórkowa); mushroom soup, (Polish: zupa grzybowa) (quite different from the North American cream of mushroom); tomato soup (Polish: zupa pomidorowa); rosół (variety of meat broth); żurek (sour rye soup); flaki (variety of tripe soup); and barszcz among others.
