The Complete Banyalbufar Travel Guide

  • August 23, 2023

On Google, Banyalbufar translates from Catalan to English as “take a bath.” The locals assure me that this is incorrect and that Banyalbufar is an amalgamation of Arabic and Catalan meaning “founded near the sea,” “vineyard by the sea,” or “embedded in the sea.” What is learned from this translation, or lack thereof, is that Banyalbufar continues to churn in the imagination. It’s a hard-to-reach place where history still tells stories , stories the traveler creates by journeying to Banyalbufar .

Banyalbufar is a traveler’s destination . It does not get trampled by tourists and newspaper headlines like Andratx or Magaluf. Nor does it have a picturesque trainline connected to Palma like Sóller. And it does not boast long, sandy beaches with shallow turquoise waters like C’an Picafort.

Banyalbufar is rocky and steep and sits high above Mallorca’s rugged northern coast, perched in the sky. It is small, having only 500 inhabitants . It is relatively challenging to reach, so remains quiet, local, and authentic . The traveler has no choice but to experience Banyalbufar through its geography and history .

The Moors inhabited Banyalbufar in the 10th century. They spoke a dialect of Arabic and are responsible for the town’s illusively translative name. They are also responsible for the chief attraction of Banyalbufar: thousands of terraces dug into the steep hillsides picturesquely cascading to the sea. The Moor’s millennium-old irrigation systems that crisscross the terraces still operate to this day.

In Banyalbufar, you can forget your preconceived notions of Mallorca and explore ancient culture and history anew.

Best Experience: Can Busquets

Most accommodating: son borguny, bike to banyalbufar, nadal – end of december/beginning of january, how to get to banyalbufar.

Banyalbufar retains its charm due to its location. To the west is the even quainter town of Estellencs, and to the east, the chill valley village of Esporles. You may well find more bikes than cars on your way to and from Banyalbufar.

The most direct route to Banyalbufar is the Ma-1040 out of Palma to Esporles. You will drive through Esporles until you merge into the Ma-1100 on the other side of town. The Ma-1100 quickly runs into the Ma-10 – a gorgeous road that if taken east, runs through the mountains and along the sea to the essential Mallorcan towns of Valldemossa , Deiá , Sóller , and Pollença. But heading northwest on the Ma-10 takes you to Banyalbufar. The drive is a windy 45 minutes from central Palma.

The bus will get you to Banyalbufar in less than an hour , but be sure to take your Dramamine. Bus 202 from Estació Intermodal in Palma will pass 13 stops before landing at Banyalbufar 2, which is right in the middle of town.

Where to Stay in Banyalbufar

You have already chosen well by choosing Banyalbufar. When selecting a hotel, you cannot go wrong. Each hotel listed below is well worth the price , offering authentic, relaxing stays with delicious food in natural landscapes .

Best Overall: Son Borguny

Son Borguny has incredible value for a charming hotel of tradition and modern comforts. This renovated 15th-century building with its arched ceilings, cool, tiled floors, and expansive sea views provides it all, leaving you to your leisure. It is located right in town, less than half a mile from the sea, and includes a highly praised breakfast for a comparably unbeatable price.

Best Value: Sa Baronia

A hotel at hostel prices . Hostal Sa Baronia offers rooms with balconies overlooking the sea . They have an outdoor solarium, pool, bar, and family-run restaurant. It is simple, clean, and well-located, and breakfast is included . Hostal Sa Baronia is an easy choice for your stay in Banyalbufar.

Can Busquets welcomes you to a traditional stone house that provides prime hospitality and delectable meals . The hotel is conveniently located next to a bus stop that is a five-minute walk into town and a 10-minute walk to Banyalbufar Bay . Its location is also perfect for exploring the numerous hiking trails surrounding Banyalbufar.

Where to Eat in Banyalbufar

Most fun: dinamics.

Pizza oozing with flavor on a perfectly cooked crust. The prices are great, and the atmosphere is friendly and laid back . I highly recommend the “Banyalbufar” pizza served with local Mallorcan sobrasada.

Best Local Flavors: Can Paco

Feel and taste your Mediterranean vacation in Can Paco. Authentic tradition is on display with their thick wooden tall back chairs, white tablecloths, and sea views . Try the typical Mallorcan arròs brut or classic Spanish paella while subsuming the scene.

Best Atmosphere: Es Trast

On Banyalbufar’s main drag, do as the Spanish do: eat fine tapas and drink local wine . Es Trast is an eclectically decorated spot in which to enjoy traditional Spanish cuisine with modern zeal.

Within the recommended hotel of Son Borguny is their highly praised restaurant . Their Mediterranean menu is conscious of dietary restrictions, and the pasta is superb.

Things to Do in Banyalbufar

Much of the activity in Banyalbufar is merely being in Banyalbufar . The town is the destination, especially with its choice of delicious, affordable restaurants , but it is also a historical stop for wine lovers and an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise .

Taste Malvasia Wine

Malvasia wine was lost and forgotten until residents of Banyalbufar found a Malvasia vine in a terraced garden. The vine was a prized discovery but struggling to survive, so the residents sent the vine to Italy for restoration. These days, thanks to these rejuvenating efforts , the vine thrives in local gardens and vineyards .

Head to Ca’n Pico Cellar or Bodega San Vives for a taste, glass, or bottle of this local luxury.

Go for a Swim

Banyalbufar offers much to be explored in terms of its coastline . Here the swimming coves are framed by steep mountain cliffs whose rockfall scatters the shore. The beaches are not sandy but rugged and stunning in their natural beauty .

Cala Banyalbufar – a narrow, 100-meter-long pebble beach – is the easiest to access from town. Es Corral Fals, Son Bunyola, and Cala Gata are also worth the trip but are most easily accessed by taking a pleasant trail along the coast from Port des Canonge . Bear in mind that the drive to Port des Canonge is remarkably steep and windy.

Go for a Hike

Camí de sa volta des general.

An easily accessed hike that’s moderately flat, right along the coast, and passes two swimming coves, Cala Gata and Son Bunyola.

Puig de Planícia

This route takes you to the peak of the 941-meter mountain between Esporles and Banyalbufar. And while many start from Esporles, I recommend starting closer to Banyalbufar along the Ma-10.

GR221 Stage 3: Estellencs to Esporles

Banyalbufar is on the famous GR221 route, which crosses the entire UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Serra de Tramuntana Mountain range. Stage three of the route is 8.9 miles long, and Banyalbufar is right in the middle of it. Alternatively, you can do a shorter section of the GR221 starting from Banyalbufar.

Mirador de ses Animes

A lovely walk up to one of the best viewpoints in Mallorca. This old watchtower was built in 1579 to keep a lookout for pirates. It was recently restored, meaning you can climb atop it and search for pirates yourself.

While there are no bike shops in Banyalbufar, its coastal location upon the Tramuntana Mountains makes it a prized destination for cyclists. If you are staying in Banyalbufar, I recommend renting from Berganti Bikes , as they provide bike delivery services to the town.

Fires i Festes

Banyalbufar is a town of few inhabitants; thus, their festivals are limited, but they are always a unique experience.

San Antoni – January 17 th

San Antoni is celebrated all over the island with fire, devils, and BBQ. The celebrations can be enjoyed in picturesque Banyalbufar, as well.

Sa Fava Parada – March

The Associació Cultural Bany-al-Bahar organizes an annual outdoor dinner in the main square, Plaça de la Vila.

Setmana Santa – April

Though Banyalbufar is a small town, they still have processions to celebrate Easter on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. They begin at Plaça de la Vila.

Banyalbujazz – July-August

Once a week for four weeks, from mid-July to mid-August, Banyalbufar puts on a world-class jazz concert.

Sant Jaume – End of July

For an entire week, Banyalbufar celebrates the patron Saint James. A complete program of family-friendly activities, outdoor cinemas, and music is available each year on the Banyalbufar town hall website .

Mare de Déu de Setembre – First week of September

Banyalbufar celebrates its very own patron saint with a week’s worth of family fun and music in September.

Like many towns in Mallorca, the Three Kings visit Banyalbufar and distribute gifts in a parade that starts at the church. The town also has an annual xocolatada , or hot cocoa night.

Walk and wine Banyalbufar 2.jpg

Walking and Wine Excursion - Banyalbufar

This fabulous day out combines a delightful walk on the  old Postman's route  from Esporles to the ancient terraced village of Banyalbufar, where we'll stop and sample some local Malvesia wines and local delicacies prepared especially for us. Banyalbufar consists of ancient Moorish terraces and the local wine growing community specialise in growing the Malvesia grape. Once we have arrived at this little lovely village we will stroll through the centre and shortly after passing the church we find one of the local bodegas where we will be enjoying a well earned break. At this little family run wineyard we will be received and introduced to the local traditions of wine producing in Banyalbufar.

Our tasting takes place at the most idyllic rustic spot just outside the little bodega with splendid seaviews. We enjoy a tasting local delicacies to accompany the wines whilst our host tells us all about the wine growers, the vines and the wines.

This day is a real treat!

What to bring with you when walking in Mallorca:

Island weather can change very quickly and unexpectedly, so it is always advisable to be ready for anything. In the mountains, cloud can drop quickly and mist can come in from the sea, causing loss in visibility and fall in temperatures.

The terrain in Mallorca is rough so good footwear is essential. Most of our walks require walking boots with hard soles, good grip and ankle support. It is a good idea to wear your boots in well (if they are new!) before putting them to the test on some of our uncompromising, rocky surfaces.

September to early June are the main walking months on the island, and although not as hot as the summer, Sept/Oct and April/May can still be hot, and even in mid-winter sensitive skins can burn. Consequently, anything that you like to use to protect yourself from the sun – hat, cream, glasses, lip salve, long sleeves and long trousers….. is advisable.

Whatever the month it is essential to carry plenty of water, and a few snacks to top up your energy levels, are always advisable – just in case!

We recommend that you bring with you:

  • Good sturdy footwear – hard soles and good grip are the most essential
  • 25-30 litres day-pack
  • Water bottle - containing at least 1.5 litres
  • High energy snacks
  • Sun protection  – hat, sun cream, sun glasses…
  • Light waterproofs
  • Additional layers for warmth - fleece, pullover...
  • Walking pole(s)
  • Small personal medical kit  – antiseptic wipes and cream, plasters, bandage, antihistamine for allergic reactions…

Other equipment you may find useful:

  • Bathing suit
  • Penknife (Pocket knife)
  • Whistle to attract attention
  • Pad or cushion to sit on during rest breaks
  • Loo (toilet) paper!
  • Ear plugs if staying in a refuge!
  • Soft, comfortable shoes and a change of clothes for the evening, if staying overnight

Cala Banyalbufar

Banyalbufar, Mallorca

Pretty coastal village in the west of Majorca

Banyalbufar is one of the last remaining authentic coastal villages in Mallorca. It clings to the western coastline of the island on a steep hillside at the edge of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. Most people come to Banyalbufar to see one thing, its ancient terraced hillsides descending down to the sea, but glorious views of the Tramuntana mountains and amazing sunsets also await you here.

There is little sign of tourism in Banyalbufar, you will find just a couple of simple hotels , cafes and an art gallery. Its remote location means there’s only a small number of residents in the village. If you are keen to get away from the touristy side of Mallorca, then Banyalbufar is the place to visit. This small and traditional village is steeped in history, which is amplified by the ancient blonde stone buildings that line every road and lane. These, combined with historical landmarks like the church of La Nativitat de Santa Maria which houses one of the most valuable Baroque organs in the world, create an old-world charm to the place. Its charms have attracted many artists to the point that many say that Banyalbufar will be the next Deià.

The land surrounding the village was developed by the Moors and divided by drystone walls. These ancient terraces stand today and speak powerfully of man's ingenuity in creating farmland out of inhospitable cliffs. Until recently it was the custom for each generation to add a further tier to the landscape. In Moorish times, the town of Banyalbufar, whose Arabic name means 'vineyard by the sea', was famed for its Malvasia wine. Nowadays, the terraces are mostly used to grow vegetables and fruit. Tomatoes are the town's most famous crop but a few vines have been planted once again.

History & Culture in Banyalbufar

The Moors famously settled in this area during the 10th century and cultivated around 2000 dry stone terraces on the mountain slopes, along with a sophisticated irrigation system of aqueducts which are still in use today. During the Middle Ages and up until the 15th century, the valley was ruled by the Barony of Banyalbufar under a practically absolutist government. Locals devoted themselves almost exclusively to agriculture and the area became famous for the cultivation of the widely popular Malvasia grape, used to produce Malvasia wine. It is said that this sweet wine was one of the motives for the re-conquest of Mallorca by Jaume I. Unfortunately, in 1891 the Phylloxera virus caused devastation and put an end to wine production in Banyalbufar. In recent years, local vignerons have been successfully working to re-establish this grape variety.

Sights & Attractions in Banyalbufar

Torre del Verger is a watch tower dating back to 1579 and can be found between Banyalbufar and Estellencs. It has become quite an iconic image on the island, so it’s more than likely to you spot this image on a postcard whilst visiting Mallorca. If you get chance, it is well worth seeing it for yourself and you can climb to the top for some breathtaking views across the sea.

Beaches in Banyalbufar

There are no sandy beaches in the vicinity of Banyalbufar as the village is mainly bordered by cliffs plunging into the sea. However, there are a number of tranquil coves and pebbled beaches nearby if you want to do some sunbathing or swimming and, a short walk away, you will find Cala Banyalbufar. Alternatively try Es Corral Fals, Son Bunyola or Es Port des Canonge.

Events in Banyalbufar

Banyalbufar’s patron saint festivities are celebrated the first week in September when the village comes to life with street parties and entertainment for all the family. A small jazz festival is held here during the months of July and August, a wonderful opportunity to experience live music in a picturesque setting.

Things to do in Banyalbufar

Being a sleepy rural mountain village, there isn’t a great deal to do here except admire the views. It’s more of a day-trip destination for cyclists , hikers and artists.

Cycling Being on the edge of the Serra de Tramuntana along a popular coastal road means there are lots of cyclists riding through Banyalbufar. If you aren’t staying here, it also provides the perfect pitstop on the cycle route from Andratx to Valldemossa along the C-710 road. Expect winding roads, steep climbs and descents, the perfect ingredients for a challenging cycling ride .

Hiking There are plenty of paths to explore in and around Banyalbufar , many of which are signposted from within the village. Although one of the prettiest is the Volta des General route , a popular well-marked hiking path from just outside the village to the fishing port of Es Port de Canonge along the coast. There’s also the Old Postman’s Route from Banyalbufar to Esporles, which is part of the GR221 or Dry Stone Route and offers some of the best views of the terraced landscape.

Wine tasting The beautiful Celler Son Vives is a small bodega but a wonderful place to try the native Malvasia grape. They do outdoor tastings on their enchanting terrace.

Dining in Banyalbufar

There are a few good restaurants worth mentioning in Banyalbufar, most are traditionally decorated and serve up good honest traditional Mallorcan and Mediterranean cuisine. The most highly regarded in the area is Son Tomás which serves up fresh Mallorcan and Mediterranean market cuisine. It also boasts the finest terrace with breathtaking views of the sea and the celebrated ancient terraces. Paella is the thing to order at Ca'n Paco, a traditional family-run restaurant with a home-from-home vibe. Whilst Pegasón y el Pajarito Enmascarado offers no-frills, hearty Mediterranean cuisine in a more rustic setting. You can expect good quality meat and fish, along with some good old favourites like pizza.

Hotels in Banyalbufar

There is a handful of hotels in Banyalbufar, simple and traditionally decorated, most offer wonderful sea views. Hotel Son Borguny is a charming boutique hotel within a 15th-century building; each room is individually decorated and has a home-from-home rustic ambience complimented by modern amenities like flatscreen TVs. The outdoor terrace surrounded by blonde stone creates a wonderfully romantic setting! Hotel Mar i Vent can be found just off the main street and offers old fashioned but comfortable rooms; there are all the basic amenities one could want including heating, telephone, safe, hairdryer and room service. It also features more than 2,000 m 2 of landscaped gardens and an outdoor swimming pool. Hotel Baronia Hostal is located within the old palace of Sa Baronia and features simple but clean accommodation, some rooms even boast terraces overlooking the sea.

How to get to Banyalbufar

By car On the west coast of Mallorca, Banyalbufar is around a 40-minute drive from Palma airport. Access to the village is by small and windy coastal roads, often occupied by cyclists so this route isn’t for the faint-hearted driver.

Public transport You can catch the bus number 200 from the bus station at Plaça Espanya in Palma, which runs between Banyalbufar and Palma fairly frequently, leaving almost once every hour. This bus also connects Banyalbufar with the neighbouring villages of Estellencs and Esporles.

Palma guide – One-day plan: hiking route from Esporles to Banyalbufar

If you have been to Mallorca before, you probably know that this island is like the never-ending-be-amazed-island, right? Even though we are a design hotel in Palma’s centre and we are obviously kind of obsessed with everything there is to do and see in Palma , there’s much more to Mallorca than just a fun capital city .

So for your ‘ plan for a day ’ today we are recommending to combine some exercise, fresh air and stunning natural scenery by going on a hike from Esporles to Banyalbufar on the road known as ‘Camí d’es Correu’.

From Esporles to Banyalbufar hiking route

The difficulty of this hiking route could be described as medium, as there are not many bumps on the road, but it is a relatively long hiking route and can’t be catalogued as ‘easy’ for this reason. The starting point for your excursion from Esporles to Banyalbufar will be the church of Esporles , a nice little town about 20 minutes away from Palma. The ‘Camí de’s Correu’ is very well signposted, as this route is part of the famous ‘ GR221’ route , which is meant for visitors to discover the Tramuntana mountain range from the inside.

excursion planicie banyalbufar

The hike from Esporles to Banyalbufar is about 2 hours and 30 minutes long and includes some slopes and some long cobbled stairs but as soon as you get to Banyalbufar we have something extra special for you. Follow our advice and go have lunch at ‘ 1661 Cuina de Banyalbufar ’. This beautiful restaurant, located right in the very heart of the village, offers Mediterranean home-cooked food in two areas: inside the restaurant and on the improvised terrace.

excursion planicie banyalbufar

After this very Majorcan kind-of lunch we want you to get some extra inspiration to start your way back by making a stop at Banyalbufar’s cove. Sit down, take a deep breath and feel the sea breeze with this stunning backdrop before cheering yourselves to start the road back to Esporles.

excursion planicie banyalbufar

When taking the hiking route back from Banyalbufar to Esporles , it lasts a little bit longer, about 2 hours and 45 minutes, which will mean you are going to have a full day of enjoying nature from the inside.

When you’re back at Nakar Hotel we’ll promise to take good care of you: it’s time to relax at the spa , check out some of the best videos and pics of the road on your mirroring TV , have a drink at the rooftop , have dinner at CUIT and sleep as comfy as possible in our superb beds.

Mallorca GR221 stage 4: Banyalbufar - Esporles

Logo Alpenverein Freistadt

The GR221 is a long-distance hiking trail in the western, more mountainous part of Mallorca, the Tramuntana. Some stages are already marked, others are still being planned, although they already exist as hiking trails.

The entire GR221 hike goes from the westernmost point of the island of Mallorca to the far north-west and takes around 10 days. The official GR221 is fully marked from west of Estellencs to Esporles and from Refugi de Can Boi before Deià to Pollença, the end of the GR221 in the north (as of June 2018), although you can extend it to Cap Formentor (lighthouse). The paths in the south are not yet signposted, but are easy to follow with the enclosed GPS track. The 10 stages almost always offer the possibility of reaching the start and end of the stages by bus.

The GR221 is also known as the Dry Stone Trail or Cami de Serra Tramuntana. There is a lot of literature on this hiking trail in various languages, and since April 2018 there has also been a dedicated geocache series along the trail: SA TRAVESSA, e.g. the cache box GC3JDFH Camí des Correu, where there are also sometimes current indications in the logs as to whether springs are still pouring. Unfortunately, I have not found a GPS list of the springs along the trail, so 3 litres of water are usually the rule in summer. There are also some good hiking guides (e.g. recently published by Rother or Serratramuntana ), which also contain detailed maps (1 south and 1 north section at 1:35,000).

The entire route is divided into the following sections, whereby the division is determined by the accommodation options:

  • Stage 1: Port d' Andratx - Sant Elm
  • Stage 2: Sant Elm - Ses Fontanelles
  • Stage 3: Ses Fontanelles - Banyalbufar
  • Stage 4: Banyalbufar - Esporles
  • Stage 5: Esporles - Valldemossa
  • Stage 6: Valldemossa - Deià
  • Stage 7: Deià - Port de Sóller (Ref de Muleta)
  • Stage 8: Port de Sóller - Sóller - Ref. Tossals Verds
  • Stage 9: Ref. Tossals Verds - Lluc (Ref. Son Amer)
  • Stage 10: Lluc (Ref. Son Amer) - Pollença (Ref. del Pont Roma)

The second highest peak on the island, the Massanella, is on stage 9.

Destination

Turn-by-turn directions.

After a tour of Banyalbufar, which is still strongly influenced by the Arabs and unfortunately does not offer favourable accommodation for hikers, head upwards from the central square on an asphalt road, where the water pipe is also located. The GR221 leaves the village of Banyalbufar on a steady incline with beautiful views of the sea. After crossing a forest, you will come to hanging terraces and, if you continue a few metres to the right at the junction of the tarmac road, an old villa (Son Sanutges). The Camí des Correu , which now begins, first leads slightly uphill through holm oak forest, where it levels out there is an old boundary stone to the left of the path. It is a pleasure to follow the freshly renovated dry stone wall path here, a model section. The highest point of the path is reached at Coll des Pi and the route descends to the Banyalbufar - Esporles road. A short detour leads to the manor house and museum La Granja . A little further on, at the waterworks, the road is left again uphill, a nice path leads to Esporles.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!

  • Destinations

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.
