Visit Komodo National Park - Indonesia

A trip to Komodo National Park is like travelling millions of years back in time. However, it is not dinosaurs who roam the land, but the famous Komodo dragons . These giant lizards can reach up to three metres in length and weigh as much as 120 kg. 2,500 dragons live in the park, which was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986. Covering 29 islands, this vast territory is also known for its unique landscapes, including tropical forests, white sand beaches, savannas and mountain ranges.

Nearby, a former samurai residence explores the everyday life of these Edo warriors.

Make a pilgrimage to Mount Fuji - Japan

Appearing above the cherry blossoms, the snowy summit of Mount Fuji is the symbol of Japan. ponant expedition cruises

Relax on the extraordinary sand of the Pink Beach - Indonesia

One of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Pink Beach in the Komodo archipelago owes its name to its unique sand, which is formed by the coral in the water. Come face to face with the Terracotta Army of Xi'an - China

Founded 3,100 years ago, Xi'an is counted among the oldest cities in China. It is also one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China , singled out by the country's major dynasties. Xi'an owes its most famous attraction to the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang : an army of 8,000 terracotta statues . Complete with their equipment, chariots and horses, the army is made up of life-size soldiers of every rank, each with their own distinctive features. Standing guard over the emperor's mausoleum since the 3rd century BC, they make an impressive sight.

ponant expedition cruises

Visit the ancient imperial capitals - Japan

The cities of Kyoto and Nara offer travellers a unique insight into the history of Japan. Nara was the capital of the Empire of the Sun during the 8th century. Temples and shrines from the period can still be visited today, including Tōdai-ji , the largest wooden temple in the world. As for Kyoto , it was the capital of the country for over ten centuries, from 794 to 1898. A visit to this iconic city—recognised as the cradle of traditional Japanese culture —is an opportunity to discover magnificent temples, practice meditation, experience a tea ceremony, or attend a Geisha performance.

ponant expedition cruises

Meet the orangutans - Malaysia

Created in 1971 and classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1977, Tanjung Puting National Park is one of the few places in the world where orangutans can still enjoy a level of freedom. It is currently home to 6,000 animals, which constitutes the largest orangutan population in the world. This park also acts as a rehabilitation centre for orphaned, abused or illegally captured orangutans, working to release them back into their natural habitat. From building a nest to finding food and moving between the trees, this re-education process can take several years. In the meantime, the high point of their day is always mealtime, when the forest rangers serve a delicious selection of fruit on special feeding trays.

Sail away to the Koh Rok Islands - Thailand

30 km to the south of Koh Lanta, the two Koh Rok islands are located within sight of one another. Separated by around a hundred metres, these charming uninhabited islets are the ideal spot for a relaxing getaway. Treat yourself to a unique adventure

Far from major tourist routes, Antarctica remains one of the few preserved areas on the planet. Tourism is regulated. Vessels departing for the White Continent do not carry more than 200 passengers at a time. It's an opportunity for everyone to enjoy an extraordinary experience and to create unforgettable memories.

ponant expedition cruises

Witness exceptional wildlife

A true sanctuary for wildlife, Antarctica is home to a diversity of marine mammals and birds that have come ashore to breed. In the water, Weddell seals, Minke whales, humpback whales, sea leopards, and subantarctic fur seals put on an enchanting show for travellers. Both on the ground and in the air, king penguins, gentoos, southern rockhoppers, and chinstraps, along with albatrosses and petrels, jump and frolic to complete the show.

ponant expedition cruises

Move through incredible scenery

Blue icebergs, sparkling towers of ice, an immaculate ice floe, imposing mountain ranges and thousand-year-old glaciers serve as backdrops to these dreamy views. Here, you'll be dazzled by shades of white, blue, grey, and sometimes purple. Sunsets give the ice a fiery glow. The sheer vastness of the setting and the 'noise' of the elements evoke moments of pure emotion.

ponant expedition cruises

Follow in the footsteps of the greatest explorers!

Even if Antarctica remains very enigmatic today, think about what it must have been like more than a century ago. British explorer James Cook ventured there as early as 1773. Adventurers followed in their droves. From Captain Charcot to Sir Ernest Shackleton, or Roald Amundsen, who was the first to reach the South Pole, or, more recently, Paul-Émile Victor, these men have tried to unravel the mysteries of the ice floe.

ponant expedition cruises

Visit historical sites and scientific bases

Even today, the White Continent keeps some of its secrets for itself. Scientific bases have been set up there to carry out research, particularly relating to climate. Former whaling stations, veritable open-air museums, bear witness to the ravages of the seal and whale hunting that took place at the beginning of the 20th century. Port Lockroy is home to the southernmost post office in the world, from which you can send your loved ones a postcard featuring the Antarctic stamp.

As you can see, there are so many reasons to embark on this unique adventure to a continent that's like no other.

ponant expedition cruises

Mingle within a penguin colony in South Georgia

Once a major whaling station, South Georgia is now a favourite spot for many seabirds. Among them, the king penguin is a happy resident. If you're lucky enough to stop off at Salisbury Plain , you'll enjoy a unique experience in the middle of a colony of no fewer than 250,000 penguins. They move around happily without regard for the few human beings who come to visit them. A unique and touching moment.

  • Crossing the Antarctic Circle

What does it mean when the navigational instruments show the fateful numbers '66°33'? You're in the middle of Antarctica , beyond the 66 th parallel ! First crossed by the British explorer James Cook in 1773, it's an integral part of the history of Antarctica. Travellers will feel a true sense of accomplishment and joy as they follow in the footsteps of the great explorers .

ponant expedition cruises

Get up close to a majestic marine fauna

From the Falkland Islands to the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctic cruises are an opportunity for unforgettable encounters with marine mammals. It's not uncommon to encounter many seals, including subantarctic fur seals and elephant seals, as well as killer whales. When the humpback whales arrive, it truly is the icing on the cake.

ponant expedition cruises

Behold the great icebergs

Be they tabular, blocky or pinnacled, icebergs all have a tendency to leave travellers speechless. These giants of the seas are indescribable! As majestic as they are worrying, their silhouettes rise up with the waves and plunge deep into the waters with a colourful blend of thousand shades of blue, from light turquoise to the darkest navy, all sparkling under the icy sun of Antarctica.

ponant expedition cruises

Visit a unique natural sanctuary

Little known and completely preserved, New Zealand's subantarctic islands are among the last remaining areas completely unspoilt by human presence on the planet. Some of these little pieces of land dotted around the ocean are inaccessible and therefore totally protected from human activity. The Snares Islands, Bounty Islands, Antipodes Islands, Auckland Islands and Campbell Islands thus represent an invaluable haven of peace for the endemic species that inhabit them, including 126 bird species.

Ports of call in Antactica

An Antarctic cruise is like no other, and different every time: crossing the Drake Passage, the razor-sharp beauty of the Falkland Islands, the emperor penguins of the Wedell Sea, the fiery temperament of Ushuaia, Port Lockroy and its southernmost post office in the world, the penguin colonies of South Georgia and the sub-Antarctic islands are all not to be missed.

Guest of Honour

  • In partnership with Le Cercle Polaire, as part of the Women at the Poles operation with featured guest Laurent Mayet.

If there is one place on the globe that fires the imagination of travellers and arouses in them an instant thirst for adventure, it is the  immaculate and faraway lands of the White Continent . Inhabited by a  surprising endemic fauna , the Antarctic will welcome you during an  11-day expedition cruise .

At the border between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans, you will enter  Drake Passage . At the roaring fifties and the screaming sixties, the wind blows and the waves beat against the stern of the ship. In the sky,  cape petrels  lead you toward their realm until you reach the first of the continent’s lands.

Ice is there in all its forms. The mountainous landscapes open up to give way to huge calving glaciers , tabular icebergs  drift in the middle of the Southern Ocean, and the sea ice shimmers in the distance. On board, the  naturalists  share with you the secrets of this  unique ecosystem . As you near the shores, the first penguins appear.  Gentoo ,  Adelie ,  chinstrap : these surprising birds, emblematic of the Antarctic, share their beaches with  leopard ,  crabeater  and  Weddell   seals . During an outing on land or at sea, in a zodiac dinghy or a kayak, you will move through a stunning scenery bathed in polar light.

We are privileged guests in these extreme lands where we are at the mercy of weather and ice conditions. Landings on certain sites and the observation of certain wildlife cannot be guaranteed. They vary from day to day, making each PONANT cruise a unique experience. The Captain and the Expedition Leader will make every effort to ensure that your experience is as rich as possible, while complying with the safety rules and instructions imposed by the IAATO.

Boarding conditions and passenger travel abilities

We invite you to read our boarding conditions and passenger travel abilities by clicking here .

Any new reservation implies the acceptance of these conditions.

To guarantee your entry into one or several countries, you must ensure that you comply with the formalities and health requirements specific to each destination. In just a few clicks on our online search engine, find all the formalities you must complete prior to your departure (visas, entry authorisations for each country, vaccinations, etc.).

The international situation can change rapidly, so be sure to check this information regularly prior to your departure. However, please note that we always recommend our guests contact the relevant national immigration and customs and border control authorities directly to find out what rules apply to their specific situation. PONANT is not responsible for any decisions made by guests based on the information provided by the online search engine.

The information below is current but subject to change at any time without advance notice from government authorities. Please consult your respective government agencies for visa and health information.

Passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the completion of your trip. Passport must contain at least two completely clear, blank, unused visa pages for each visa required, not including any amendment pages. Visa pages with stains or ink from other pages in the passport are not usable. Guests who deviate from the scheduled embarkation or disembarkation port should research the foreign entry requirements for the port country. Due to government regulations, regrettably, Ponant will have to deny boarding to any guest who fails to obtain the appropriate travel documentation for this trip.

Argentina : should you require a visa to travel to Argentina, we recommend you apply for a double-entry visa as a technical stop in Chile might be scheduled.

Kayaking in polar region: for persons under 18, we will require a sworn statement from the parents or legal guardians that they are able to swim. A parent or legal guardian must be present at the time of the activity.

List of items prohibited on board

To guarantee the safety and well-being of our guests, certain items are strictly prohibited on board. Should you have one of these products or objects in your possession, they will be confiscated immediately and will not be transported on the ship. When an item transported aboard is considered illegal, the relevant authorities will be notified systematically.

Click here  for the full list of items prohibited on board.

Warning about the use of drones : the use of drones aboard PONANT ships, whether they are sailing at sea, at a port of call or anchored, is strictly forbidden. The use of drones on land in the Arctic and Antarctic regions is also strictly forbidden by international polar regulations. In other regions, it may be possible to use drones on land if permission has been obtained from the relevant authorities of each country and each region travelled through, as well as a pilot’s licence that should be obtained from your home country. Passengers are responsible for obtaining these permits; they should be able to present them at all times. Passengers who do not obtain these authorisations expose themselves to the risk of legal proceedings.

Expedition programmes include activities such as zodiac outings and landings (sometimes with "wet landing"), moderate walks to more active hikes, all accompanied by your expedition team of naturalist guides.

Ports of call, visited sites, outings and landings will depend on weather conditions, position of ice, winds and the state of the sea. These can force a change of plans at any time. The Captain and the Expedition Leader may at any time cancel or stop any activity, or even modify the itinerary. The final itinerary will be confirmed by the Captain, who will take into account the touristic quality of the sites and above all, the safety of the passengers. His decision will be based on advice from experts and authorities.

Travelling to polar/isolated regions is an exhilarating experience in remote areas: please remember that you are far from modern hospitals with full medical facilities, thus evacuation is extremely expensive. Without adequate medical coverage, all expenses will have to be immediately paid with your personal funds. We urge you to subscribe to full coverage insurance, choose your insurance company very carefully, be extremely vigilant and ensure your insurance is fully comprehensive, especially if you are insured by your credit card. PONANT offers an insurance contract with extensive guarantees, please contact us for more information.

Kayak Discovery

Get as up close to the natural environment as possible with an excursion aboard a two-person sea kayak, during one 2-hour session. Guided by a state-registered polar navigation specialist, you'll discover and explore breathtakingly scenic polar landscapes and scenery. All the necessary equipment will be provided for you on board.

How is the activity organised?

Once you’ve arrived onboard the ship, you’ll meet your guides and the rest of the people taking part in the activity. This will be an opportunity to provide a general introduction to the activity, outline the rules that need to be followed, provide the necessary equipment and separate the participants into groups based on personal preferences and/or ability level.

The day before the activity is due to take place, a new briefing session will be organised to provide you with further details about the port of call and how the excursion will be organised. We’ll then provide you with the necessary equipment, which you’ll be required to take very good care of.

On the day of the kayak activity, you’ll first get changed at the ship’s marina platform (keeping your boots and parkas with you) before then being transported to land by Zodiac® and taken to your kayaks.

Before you climb into your kayaks and set off on your adventure, your guides will provide a final safety briefing.

What requirements do you need to meet in order to go sea kayaking?

Though it’s always useful to have at least one experience of sea kayaking under your belt, due to the high quality of the equipment we provide and the experience of the guides who’ll be supervising you, we are able to take complete beginners to places normally only accessible to professional kayakers and seasoned outdoor adventurers.

Participants will be formed into groups based on ability level onboard the ship to ensure everyone is able to make smooth progress on the trip.

Sea kayaking is a physically demanding activity, for both the heart and the muscles. We require you to be in a good state of general physical health and to have a good sense of balance.

This activity is available to adults (aged 18 or over) and to children of 16 and over when accompanied by a parent.

Please note:

  • One 2-hour session. Price per participant: 350 €
  • Number of participants restricted to 20 per trip.
  • This activity must be pre-booked in advance at least 7 days before the start of your cruise. Bookings made after this deadline will only be confirmed once onboard and are dependent on availability.
  • Your vouchers will be dropped off directly in your room, during your cruise.
  • Due to restrictions on the number of places available and a high level of interest from our passengers, there may be limited access to certain activities. The cost of any kayak trip cancelled by a passenger prior to departure will still remain payable in full.
  • PONANT provides each participant with a sea kayak (Prijon Excursion EVO - two-person kayak for two participants), a dry suit (Sandyline - specially designed for PONANT), a life jacket, hand protection, kayak sea socks, spray skirt, carbon paddle (TNP Wolferine) and a waterproof bag.
  • Depending on opportunities/availabilities during your cruise, additional Kayak tours can be booked only onboard.
  • Kayak excursions are subject to weather and ice conditions on the day.
  • You will be accompanied by state-certified kayakers each time you go out in a kayak.
  • We require you to be in a good state of general physical health and to have a good sense of balance.

Le Cercle Polaire

Founded in 2006, the NGO, Le Cercle Polaire (LCP) is working to develop a greater knowledge and understanding of the polar regions, the Arctic and Antarctic, in addition to promoting their protection. During the last decade, LCP has played a key participatory role on national, European and international levels in the political battle for a better ecological governance of the polar regions. Since 2009, Company Ponant has been supporting LCP’s cultural and educational actions, including Women of the Poles/Femmes aux Pôles , its ongoing campaign in line with the United Nations Agenda 2030.

Women of the poles

Women of the poles

Within the context of the United Nations Agenda 2030 which is comprised of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SWGs), is SDG5, dedicated to Gender Equality and Empowerment of all women and girls. This SDG is defined by the international community as "a necessary condition to ensure a peaceful, sustainable and prosperous world". In recognition and support of this declaration, the NGO Le Cercle Polaire (LCP), has launched the campaign Women of the poles . Certainly, the issue is not of the same importance for women living in places such as Algeria, Iran or Afghanistan. The campaign brings to light the achievements of polar women adventurers, explorers and photographers from around the world by presenting their first hand accounts of on journeys and expeditions which rival or surpass those of their male counterparts. Polar experiences have recently become one of the symbols among others in the battle for gender equality and of the fight against discrimination affecting women and girls. It is this aspect on which LCP and Ponant (through its initiative #PONANTwomen) choose to put special emphasis although not precluding other important aspects such as the severe beauty of polar landscapes, unique relationships with nature, pushing oneself to the limits, the experience of isotaion and of the void, disorientation and change of scenery, to name but a few.

The Women of the poles campaign led by le Cercle Polaire brings together 50 polar women adventurers, explorers or photographers from around the world presenting the singular story of each women’s accomplishment and the spirit brought to each. These first hand accounts will be published on a Facebook page, on the Cercle Polaire website page, and a digital booklet grouping the photos and the writings of the Women of the poles .

Ports of Call & Excursions

Ushuaia

28 November 2025 - Ushuaia

Embarkation 28/11/2025 from 16:00 to 17:00 Departure 28/11/2025 at 18:00

Capital of Argentina's Tierra del Fuego province, Ushuaia is considered the gateway to the White Continent and the South Pole. Nicknamed “ El fin del mundo ” by the Argentinian people, this city at the end of the world nestles in the shelter of mountains surrounded by fertile plains that the wildlife seem to have chosen as the ultimate sanctuary. With its exceptional site, where the Andes plunge straight into the sea, Ushuaia is one of the most fascinating places on earth, its very name evocative of journeys to the unlikely and the inaccessible…

Crossing the Drake Passage

29 November 2025   30 November 2025 - Crossing the Drake Passage

Arrival 29/11/2025 Departure 30/11/2025

Use your days spent in the Drake Passage to familiarise yourself with your ship and deepen your knowledge of the Antarctic. The Expedition Leader will first present the IAATO rules of conduct that must be observed during landings in the region and will explain everything you need to know about the zodiac   outings. Lectures about the history and wildlife of the Antarctic will be an opportunity for you to learn more about this magical region, where every cruise is a unique experience .  You will experience exceptional sailing moments on board and join the naturalist-guides on your ship’s exterior decks to look out for albatrosses, cape petrels, and other seabirds flying over the Drake Passage.

Antarctic Peninsula

1 December 2025   5 December 2025 - Antarctic Peninsula

Arrival 01/12/2025 Departure 05/12/2025

Succumb to the magic of a place unlike any other. To this day, the mythical Antarctic Peninsula still holds real fascination and promises its visitors unforgettable moments. Throughout your adventure in this icy realm, you will find yourself in the heart of a spectacular decor in subtle shades of blue and white, surrounded by exceptional wildlife . Penguins, humpback whales, seals and giant petrels are at home here, as are elephant seals, fur seals, Antarctic minke whales, and orcas. Depending on which sites you will be lucky enough to visit, you may get the chance to observe them and share with them the beauty of these extreme parts.

Each day, based on ice conditions, the Captain and the Expedition Leader will suggest zodiac   outings or landings to discover the infinite riches of the Antarctic Peninsula.  Glaciers, ice floe, tabletop icebergs, mountain peaks that plunge straight into the sea, volcanic beaches, research stations, enchanting bays, and vestiges of the whaling industry: these are the faces of the Antarctic that will likely reveal themselves to you, in a hushed and surreal atmosphere. You will sail in the wake of Jean-Baptiste Charcot, Adrien de Gerlache and Sir Ernest Shackleton, great Antarctic explorers who, from the 19th century, set out to conquer these remote and uninhabited lands.

Crossing the Drake Passage

6 December 2025   7 December 2025 - Crossing the Drake Passage

Arrival 06/12/2025 Departure 07/12/2025

If there is one place, one sea, one waterway dreaded by tourists, researchers and hardened seafarers alike, it is undoubtedly Drake Passage . Situated at the latitude of the infamous Furious Fifties winds, between Cape Horn and the South Shetland Islands, it is the shortest route to connect Antarctica to South America . Seasoned navigators will tell you that you must earn your visit to the White Continent! As the Antarctic convergence zone where cold currents rising up from the South Pole meet warmer equatorial water masses, Drake Passage harbours a very diverse marine fauna. Don't forget to look to the sky to catch a glimpse of elegant albatross and Cape petrels , playfully floating about in the wind around your ship.

8 December 2025 - Ushuaia

Arrival 08/12/2025 Disembarkation 08/12/2025 at 07:00

First introduced in 2015 and the fourth ship in the Sisterships series, Le Lyrial is the very embodiment of this new generation of intimately sized cruise ships . Its exterior and interior lines, all sober understatement and refinement, make it a yacht of a rare and innovative kind.

For the interior decoration, we took inspiration from the tones and colours of our destinations and used a palette made up of blues , from the soft, luminous grey-like tones of the polar ice to the vivid notes and turquoises of Mediterranean inlets and coves.

Ponant ship LE LYRIAL - Deck 3

Find out more about Le Lyrial

Make your dreams of adventure come true, explore the boundaries of the world, and discover wild and legendary territories. The icy immensity of Antarctica, the constantly changing glaciers and icebergs of the North Pole, the mysterious mists of the North European coastlines, the most remote fjords on the planet… Every destination unveils unrivalled landscapes, home to increasingly varied fauna. Our team of naturalist-guides will share their knowledge with you during varied lectures about the history of the great explorations, geology and climatology, the fauna and flora, and will invite you to share special moments with the local populations.

Later drive towards the Chilean border at Cerro Castillo (about a 3-hour drive). Proceed through border formalities, and board your motorcoach with your Chilean local driver and guide.

Proceed to Puerto Natales (1.5-hour drive), and you will arrive at The Remota Patagonia lodge hotel 4* (or similar).

Dinner at the hotel.

Day 3 - Puerto Natales, Chile /Torres del Paine National Park, Chile /El Calafate, Argentina

Early breakfast and check out of your hotel.

Today visit the Torres del Paine National Park, which provides wonderful views onto the Torres Massif and its jagged peaks, as well as of Grey Glacier. Several short hikes enable visitors to reach the most beautiful viewing points in the park and to become acquainted with the wealth of flora and fauna found in the area.

This 227,298-hectare sanctuary was founded under the name of Lago Gray National Tourism Park on May 13, 1959, when the main activity of the area was still Livestock and tourism were relegated to a few adventurers. Just on April 30, 1970, the park adds 11,000 new hectares to its protected terrain and is baptized as it is known today: Torres del Paine National Park. The park encompasses ancient forests, glaciers, lakes, rivers and fjords, and fauna including guanacos, foxes, pumas and a diverse array of birds.

Boxed lunch with beverages will be provided.

Transfer to El Calafate (about 2-hour drive) to the Hotel Posada Los Alamos 4* (or similar), enjoy dinner at the hotel.

Day 4 - El Calafate, Argentina/Perito Moreno Glacier, Argentina/El Calafate, Argentina

After breakfast, visit the spectacular Perito Moreno glacier. This extraordinary tour will bring you to the biggest and most important highlight of the Argentine Patagonia region.

Depart from the hotel to visit Perito Moreno (approximately 1 hour 17 min drive time from El Calafate). During this tour, you will notice the dramatic change in landscape. While in El Calafate everything is dry, harsh and flat, at the park entrance you will see trees, mountains and green vegetation. Soon you will see the breath-taking Perito Moreno glacier, the centerpiece of the national park. Due to unusually favorable local conditions, it is one of the few advancing glaciers on the planet. The Moreno glacier merits a visit and you will be highly impressed standing only a few meters away from its 200 to 260-yard high (60 to 80 m) walls. The deep blue colors of the ice and the shape of the glacier with all its small columns are unbelievable. You will have enough time to explore this site by yourself, before returning to El Calafate.

You will be return to Posada Los Alamos Hotel (or similar) for the night.

Day 5 - El Calafate/Ushuaia

Breakfast and check out of hotel. Transfer to El Calafate airport in time for flight El Calafate/Ushuaia selected by PONANT.

An unforgettable luxury cruise in the Arctic!

Best of-10620_260719_Kangerlussuaq-Kangerlussuaq©StudioPONANT-Laurence Fischer (1)

Adventure and authenticity

Explore the Arctic , a destination at the ends of the earth with truly extraordinary landscapes. Inspired by the sagas of explorers of remote lands, PONANT, a company that has blazed the trail of the polar expedition, dreams up exclusive experiences for thrill-seeking travellers, from icebergs, glaciers, and sea kayaking to encounters with local communities. On board, everything is calm and gentle, luxury and comfort. You’re in the hands of an exceptional fleet manoeuvred by experienced crews, who are present and attentive to your needs. Simply let the waves of adventure carry you away.

Daring routes, authentic encounters

With solid experience in polar exploration, PONANT cruises are above all devoted to the unusual and unexpected. In their perpetual quest for unique routes , the company takes you to the most remote of areas, allowing you to discover fascinating flora and fauna. Commanders, expedition leaders and naturalist guides rich in expertise work hand in hand to take you on incredible journeys. Every day, they watch vigilantly and patiently, on the lookout for once-in-a-lifetime moments. Imagine: at daybreak, on the sea ice , right before your eyes, a polar bear appears. Picture again, at dusk, a majestic whale ballet. So many unforgettable experiences!  The PONANT teams forge ties with local populations , promising precious moments of exchange and sharing. It’s the opportunity to discover the secrets of the ancestral narwhal hunt alongside a seasoned Inuit hunter, or to simply converse with members of the community.

Reasonably-sized ships at the forefront of innovation

The vessels in the PONANT fleet have a limited number of cabins and suites, providing an intimate travel experience. They are equipped with the latest technical innovations available, pushing the envelope for ethical sea exploration and taking you to the most remote of shores. Combining technological prowess with refined interior design, PONANT ships offer an intimate, soft setting. The spaces are decorated in muted shades, drawing the focus outwards with large picture windows . Suites and cabins are sleek and elegant. All come with a private balcony and sea views; and some suites have a terrace and private jacuzzi .  From the exterior decks, the Observatory lounge or even one of the swimming pools, enjoy exceptional polar landscapes in all their majesty. You can also opt for a wellness break by indulging in a relaxing treatment in the ship’s spa . Le Commandant Charcot even has a snow cabin!

A luxury cruise and gastronomy: exceptional cuisine for an exceptional expedition

To enhance your journey, PONANT has partnered with Ducasse Conseil to offer you the most refined, upscale gastronomy on board its ships. At the helm in the kitchen, its seasoned chefs work passionately with exceptional products to serve you healthy, elegant and gourmet dishes , different every day and enhanced with delicious wines. It is truly flavourful and generous cuisine, in keeping with the French way of life .

Attentive experts at your command

At the helm of the PONANT ships are experienced captains, true virtuosos of navigation in an extreme environment, with perfect knowledge of the terrain built over long years of experience . Alongside them, passionate experts and naturalist guides provide you with exciting insights on the history and flora and fauna of the Arctic, as well as the climatic and geopolitical issues of the Poles . Talk with ornithologists, glaciologists, or polar bear specialists while on board. They will answer all your questions, whether at informal meetings on observation decks or at your table over dinner. PONANT also surrounds itself with prestigious guests : world-renowned explorers, scientists and filmmakers, all distinguished ambassadors who share their passion for the Poles. On board Le Commandant Charcot , teams of scientists are tasked with advancing our knowledge of the Poles, which are extreme and fragile environments. It is an opportunity to observe enriching experiences and exchange with them about their research.

Once-in-a-lifetime experiences

Sublime moments of contemplation await you, from icebergs, fjords, glaciers and sea ice as far as the eye can see, to Greenland villages encircled by snow-capped peaks. And, at the right time of year, you might even see the luminous sky dance under the breathtaking Northern Lights. For an even more immersive experience, you can take advantage of many different personalised activities, depending on your trip, such as kayaking on the icy waters of the Arctic Ocean, traversing vast, immaculately white expanses on foot or by dog sled , observing whales and polar bears, taking a walk in the footsteps of Paul-Émile Victor and seeing the cabin where he lodged, embarking on a polar trek with an Inuit guide or sharing a meal with the Innu community along the St. Lawrence River in Quebec . If the opportunity arises, you could even play football with Greenlanders on the ice ! So many unforgettable moments…

Preservation and awareness

Among the most important of PONANT’s high fundamental standards are prevention, preservation and respect for polar ecosystems . In its approach of this unique world region, the company is committed to limiting the impact of its polar expedition trips and protecting flora and fauna , complying with strict international standards and best practices defined by the IAATO and the AECO, two tour operator associations of which PONANT is a member and which govern tourism activities in Antarctica and the Arctic.  A code of ethics is sent to passengers in order to make them very aware of the need to preserve these remote regions. It is in this same spirit that PONANT plans its routes, collaborating with local populations in accordance with their traditions .   Among such commitments to protecting the Poles and oceans, the PONANT Foundation , created in 2018, is working alongside scientists to advance research in this area. Spearheading this scientific cooperation effort are the cutting-edge laboratories aboard Le Commandant Charcot .

Because we are always better at protecting what we know, the company aims to create in each of its passengers an ambassador fully aware of the importance of preserving this invaluable natural wealth .

Did you know?

The word Arctic comes from the Greek árktos, which means “bear”. This “land of bears” references the Ursa Major and Ursa Minor constellations, which cannot be observed from the South Pole or Antarctica, the “land without bears”. As for the most radiant of all stars, the North Star is found just above the geographical North Pole.

How Expedition Cruising Appeals to the Adventurous Traveler

I n June, I found myself climbing into a submersible in the middle of a Greenlandic fjord — just as another, more notorious submersible was lost in the Atlantic. But thanks to a helpful pilot, I felt completely at ease as we descended into the depths in one of the Seabourn Venture ’s two U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7s. We glimpsed only a scattering of life — some sea stars, a few sea squirts, a lone flatfish — but the experience was monumental, akin to what it might be like to venture into space for the first time.

This sort of adventurous, once-in-a-life moment is becoming more and more accessible as expedition cruising increases in popularity. In a recent report forecasting 2023 travel, Virtuoso noted that “more travelers are seeking out activities that require greater mental and physical exertion.” The travel company confirmed, “There’s a rising interest in scientific expeditions like shadowing researchers in Antarctica and the Galapagos,” adding that “clients are indulging in activities that push beyond the typical comforts.”

“The growth in the expedition industry in the last five years is the fastest growing segment in the cruise industry,” says Robin West, Vice President and General Manager of Expeditions for Seabourn. “There’s probably 45 new expedition vessels that have been built since about 2018. I think social media plays a big influence in the sense that there’s so much more awareness of these remote areas — it’s just so much more on everyone’s radar.”

An expedition cruise differs from a traditional cruise in several ways. An important factor is the ships themselves: an expedition ship is a small, purpose-built vessel designed to travel to remote areas for extended periods of time without needing to constantly be in a port. They typically have reinforced bows that allow them to push through areas of ice in destinations like Antarctica and Greenland. Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot is an actual icebreaker, which is useful for transporting guests to the North Pole.

Expedition ships are also outfitted with Zodiac rafts, kayaks, submersibles, and other adventure gear, as well as specific decks and areas for wildlife sighting. Seabourn’s two expedition ships, the Venture and the newly-launched Pursuit, have expedition teams formed of 24 experts, from geologists to ornithologists. Viking’s Octantis and Polaris have working scientific laboratories onboard, where researchers test the Antarctic waters for microplastics and track seabirds, and both ships launched weather balloons as part of a partnership with NOAA. Onboard, the day-to-day itinerary tends to evolve.

“Expedition travel is more flexible, guided by the weather, or other surprises found along the way,” explains Hayley Peacock-Gower, Chief Marketing Officer of Aurora Expeditions , which hosts expeditions all over the world. “Our expedition team is not afraid to adjust our schedule to make the most of unexpected wildlife or scenic displays, and they encourage our passengers to get off-ship as much as possible — that is where the real adventure is on an expedition cruise.”

There’s also a focus on education, although not always in an overt way. Many expedition ships host lectures and talks, screen nature films and hold daily briefings where the expedition leader discusses the plan for the next day and shares details relating to the destination. Most importantly, guests see and experience the environment, local culture and wildlife daily.

“Guests want to learn, but they are on a holiday,” West says. “They don’t want to have the academics forced down their throats on a day to day basis and have to take notes. Instead, you want to create this fun learning environment that is not just theoretical, but it’s also practical because you’re heading out into the environment.”

Many cruise companies have focused on polar destinations for their expeditions, especially Antarctica, which has become increasingly popular in recent years. During the 2022-2023 season, from October to March, a record 105,331 people visited Antarctica, according to the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO). On Viking, the focus is on pairing a comfortable, high-end cruising experience while engaging guests in the reality of one of Earth’s most fragile places.

How to Plan a Trip to Antarctica

Everything you need to know ahead of your first trek to the White Continent

“Learning about the environment of Antarctica is very important to all of us,” explains Berna Urtubey, the expedition leader on the Viking Polaris. “Antarctica is driving the weather and the climate of the world, so it is extremely important that we preserve Antarctica as clean and as pristine as it still is today … we hope and expect that our guests become Antarctic ambassadors.”

You don’t have to go as far south as the Antarctic Peninsula to experience an expedition cruise. Seabourn brings guests to the coasts of South America, Greenland and even the Northwest Passage, and soon will explore the warm weather region of The Kimberley in Australia, an up-and-coming destination that is also served by Ponant’s ships. Hurtigruten Expeditions goes everywhere from Svalbard to the Galápagos Islands to Cape Verde. There are also many options in the U.S. itself. During the Antarctic off-season, Viking’s two expedition ships head to the Great Lakes, while Seabourn has an array of Alaskan cruises that operate on ocean ships with their added Ventures by Seabourn program.

In May, American Queen Voyages kicked off its second Alaska expedition season on the Ocean Victory, with 12- and 13-day journeys through areas that feel undiscovered to guests. Cindy D’Aoust, President of American Queen Voyages, says the company is noticing that “travelers are looking to be more intentional about where they spend their money and what they get out of their travel experience.” It’s attracting a younger generation who might not typically spend their vacation days or travel budget on a cruise.

“These cruises have definitely attracted younger guests who are interested in less-discovered wilderness terrain and carry a deep passion for the destination itself,” D’Aoust explains. “Beyond passengers, these vessels have researchers and scientists onboard tracking whales, gaining ocean samples and educating passengers on their surroundings, all in all making a trip more intentional. Expedition cruises are great for travelers looking for longer sailings and who show a preference for hands-on experiences that offer unique connections with local communities.”

West notes that Seabourn’s expedition itineraries attract a similarly-aged traveler to their ocean cruises, but he encourages people not wait too long to take that coveted Antarctic voyage. Non-retirees can take advantage of the high-speed Starlink WiFi onboard the Venture and the Pursuit to work remote from places like Greenland and Iceland.

“We do sometimes find on an expedition vessel, because of the demographic, we have some guests who have left it too late,” West notes. “And although they can still enjoy Antarctica, they don’t have the physical capabilities to really do what they would like to do. Sometimes they get frustrated because they’ve left this bucket list destination until the end.”

An unexpected highlight of an expedition cruise is how it pushes travelers out of their comfort zone — in a way that feels adventurous and safe. Guests have to gear up before they board the zodiacs, which zip around icebergs and inch up close to massive glaciers. The submersibles offer an experience many might never otherwise do. Activities take place in rain, shine or sleeting deluge. Expedition team members carry guns in case of polar bears.

“That is part of the experience,” explains Daniel Fox, the expedition photographer in residence for Seabourn and author of Feel the Wild . “Going on a zodiac drive, getting out when it is raining and windy, being out there when it is cold, landing on beach with the zodiac — being on an expedition is all about learning and feeling like you have accomplished something you would have not done before.”

Being in these remote places, perhaps surrounding by penguins, is also transformative. Since traveling on expeditions to Greenland and Antarctica, I read more about the climate crisis and ice melt, and I’ve become more conscious about microplastics in the water because I saw them myself onboard the Viking Polaris. Seeing melting glaciers up close made things feel even more dire and encouraged me to take more responsibility. For many, an expedition cruise is an opportunity to experience firsthand why the Earth is worth saving.

“Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s famous quote ‘People protect what they love, they love what they understand and they understand what they are taught’ is at the core of the expedition experience,” Fox says. “Guests get to feel these places. They get to learn about them. Then they get to share their love and spread the word of the importance in protecting them. When done properly, expedition cruising is one of the best tools for conservation.”

Episode 148 Maxine's Personal Trip to Antarctica on Seabourn Venture

We are talking about Maxine's recent cruise to Antarctica on Seabourn Venture. . Welcome to this week's Cruise Chat! If you find value in this video and wish to help this channel, you can donate using this link: https://bit.ly/KathleenPenner. . Video Requests: [email protected]. . I loved meeting with Maxine and learning more about the Seabourn expedition experience. . Why Choose Seabourn? Seabourn is a luxury small-ship company with five luxury ships and two luxury expedition ships travelling to remote destinations. Their vessels have a capacity of 458 to 604 guests, and the expedition ships have 264 guests. You will have the intimacy of a small ship experience combined with luxury and amenities. . This ship has a beautiful infinity pool, and it would be fabulous to soak in the warm water as you sail past glaciers and ice peaks. There is something magical about that! . One of the expedition ships goes to the Arctic, and one goes to the South Pacific & Australia and the Antarctic, while the other heads to the Amazon. So they can be in the med, and they can be in Brazil and the Caribbean. The infinity pools are very multi-purpose! In the lower hemisphere, you can sail from November until March, as it is their summer, with more extended daylight and pleasant temperatures. . In this week's episode, we talked about Maxine's experience with Antarctica. She talked about being out on the deck and celebrating with the included champagne as you toast to seeing land. . Seabourn has 100% veranda outside suites. The suites start at 350 square feet and have a walk-in closet, a large bathroom with marble, a soaker tub, and a shower with double sinks. . They are luxury! . Sitting on the deck, you can snuggle under a blanket provided while enjoying your views of Antarctica. . Getting from Ship to shore is easy and efficient with Zodiacs—heavy-duty inflatable sides. You will make a wet landing and step into the water with the provided boots to keep you dry. Your welcoming party will be Penguins! Now that's a great welcome! . You will also be provided with Helly Hansen Parkas - which is yours to keep. . You can hike from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. - it's self-guided. You don't see everyone else in the photos because you are divided into groups and take turns disembarking from the ship. Everyone goes at their own pace. You are asked not to get too close to the wildlife, but they come close to you! . When you return to the ship, all your clothing and boots will be stored in the mud room, where everyone has a locker. The Mud Room is attached to the Landing Zone. . Seabourn Venture and its expedition ships are open to people of all ages. On Maxine's voyage, there was a six-year-old and an 86-year-old. Six is the youngest age allowed on Seabourn's Expedition ships. . One of the best activities I and many others would want to do is the polar plunge! You jump off the side of the Ship. Once you come back onboard, you can sit in the hot tub or head to the sauna. I would like this because it is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and you can warm up fast! . This is perfect for single cruises because you will always share experiences with others while cruising alone. It is a social atmosphere because it's small and intimate, and you make lifelong friends through shared experiences. . Please reach out to me to book your cruise! I want you to be on board. You will be forever changed by this experience, just as Maxine was. . If you want to learn more about Seabourn or any other cruise lines I have met with, please email me at [email protected]. . The Aqua Nera has a more upscale design and departs on different days of the week than the Aqua Aria, but the itineraries are the same. . Departure Dates: Aria Amazon (Monday and Friday) and Aqua Nera (Tuesday and Saturday. She also has three Decks, a top viewing deck and two passenger decks. Aqua Nero has many dark wood tones. Nera means Black in Italian; keeping with its namesake, much of the color scheme is black. . Inside the bathroom, handmade inlay Portuguese-painted tile is present. Many details tie in the Peruvian area's history and culture. The lounge and bar areas have bamboo seating, using the materials surrounding the Peruvian rainforest. . Beer and wine are included on the Aqua Nera throughout your voyage. The ship also has a screening room (movie room) and a balanced pool table, a great addition. So you can have fun and unwind at the end of your day of exploration. . My favourite feature of the Aqua Nera is the Infinity pool! Seeing the rainforest as you soak in an infinity pool would be outstanding! . You can go Kayaking down the Amazon with Aqua Expeditions. You can also go fishing for piranhas. What a great experience! . Aqua Expeditions also offers birdwatching and helps you take the best photos. You can also borrow one of Aqua's bikes and explore the town. . There is ample room to spread out and to have space of your own. They have one ship that is continually in the Pacific. . With longer stays, you will be immersed in the areas you visit. Welcome to this week's Cruise Chat! In this episode, we take you on a journey to explore the luxurious world of Explora Journeys. Get ready to be amazed! You can donate using THIS link. Video Requests: [email protected] This was recorded when we were on Explora Journeys. I had the chance to chat with Patrica about this amazing cruise experience! Have you been able to look at my other videos? Click here to see the suite tours. ADA Ocean Terrace Suite OT3 OT3 (Ocean Terrace 3) Cove Residence Terrace Suite. Premier Penthouse Suite Retreat Residence Suite Click HERE to see the spa tour with the spa manager, Elina. Click HERE to see the pool tours. Click HERE to see the playlist where I met with Patrica and Aimee Price, and we chatted about all things Explora. . Stay tuned to our channel to see the daily vlogs being created. . I loved having the opportunity to meet with Patricia in person! . Explora Journeys has one of the best guest services I have ever seen onboard a cruise ship. They are polite, helpful and always there when you need something. - if it's a drink, a meal, or a helping hand. They are there! I cannot wait to go back and experience this service again. . Explora Journeys is a mid-sized ship with a small ship feel. There is ample room to spread out and to have space of your own. . We had difficulty trying to choose our favourite restaurant. Sakura is near the top of the list - it's Pan-Asian, and many of the items on the menu you may not make at home for yourself, so it's a nice treat to head out to that restaurant! . There are many restaurants onboard. If you want to see all the restaurants and sample menus, check out this page on my website: https://www.plentyofsunshinetravel.com/explora-journeys-restaurants/ There is a restaurant for everyone, including gluten-free and vegan options. . The Emporium has fresh foods made to order. It is called a Marketplace, not a buffet. The pasta is made every day, as is the bread. Delicious! The Med Yacht Club is outstanding. - the appetizers are made to share with the table. When we went with Patrica, we ordered everything on the menu and shared it, which was neat! The dessert ~ the semifreddo... WOW! We would go in just for that! . In Fil Rouge, the specialty item is the soufflé, which changes frequently. Having it rise higher and higher above the dish is a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds! . Every venue has been fantastic. Only one restaurant has a charge (Anthology), which is well worth it! . I love how many pools there are. I have been on ships that are larger and had fewer pools. I loved that there are many pool options. You can get complementary milkshakes, which is nice returning from a hot port day. . You will feel that you are at home or in a hotel, not on a cruise. It is amazing! You will feel at home in the suites, which is why they are called residential suites. With 461 suites - all oceanfront and all have a terrace. There is one for you! They start at 377 square feet and only go up from there. Your host attendant is going to keep your suite spotless! . I want to thank Patrica for including me on this cruise with her and for taking the time to sit down with me and chat about all things Explora Journeys! . If you want to learn more about Explora Journeys or any other cruise lines I have met with. Please get in touch with me at [email protected].
