Nanning City Guide: A Brief History Of Nanning, China

Ready to unravel the rich historical tapestry of Nanning? This bustling city, now the vibrant heart of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, boasts a history that stretches back over thousands of years. From its early days as a strategic military outpost to its current status as a thriving gateway to Southeast Asia, Nanning’s past is as colorful as its present. Let’s take a stroll through time. We’ll discover the historical milestones that have shaped this fascinating city.

Ancient Beginnings

Foundation Stones : Nanning’s story begins in the Qin Dynasty, when it was established as an important military outpost. Its strategic location made it a key player in the defense against potential invasions from the south. Over the centuries, it grew from a defensive bastion into a bustling trading hub, taking advantage of its rich natural resources and favorable position along ancient trade routes.

Dynastic Influences

Era of Expansion : During the Tang and Song dynasties, Nanning expanded beyond its military roots to become a cultural and economic center. It was during these times that Nanning was officially recognized as the capital of the region, a status that brought with it increased wealth and a burgeoning population. The city’s influence continued to grow, bolstered by its role in regional governance and trade.

Colonial and War Times

A Turbulent Phase : Fast forward to more recent history, and Nanning’s strategic location once again put it at the forefront of conflict and change. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was a battleground for various colonial powers and warlords. Later, during World War II and the Chinese Civil War, Nanning served as a crucial military base and a refuge for those fleeing the Japanese invasion.

The Reform Era

Modern Transformation : With the advent of China’s economic reforms in the late 20th century, Nanning pivoted from a regional administrative center to a modern metropolis. The establishment of the China-ASEAN Expo in 2004 marked a new era for Nanning, positioning it as a gateway city to Southeast Asia. This international exposure brought rapid development, transforming its skyline and economic prospects.

Cultural Heritage Today

Living History : Despite its rapid modernization, Nanning has managed to preserve its rich cultural heritage. The city is a living museum, dotted with historical landmarks such as the ancient Yongning Pagoda, built during the Ming Dynasty, and the Qingxiu Mountain, which has been a place of leisure for locals since the Tang Dynasty. These sites, along with vibrant local traditions in music, dance, and art, keep Nanning’s storied past alive.

Why Nanning’s History Matters

Nanning Top Attractions and Best Places to Visit in China

Situated within a reasonable train ride from Hanoi , Nanning is the first place many Southeast Asian backpackers arrive in China.

While it is far from the biggest urban destination in the country, its proximity to one of Asia’s most stunning waterfalls makes it a great place to spend a few days while plotting your next move.

Begin your visit to Nanning by getting familiar with local history at the Guangxi Museum of Nationalities . Within its brilliant modernist walls (which are shaped like a bronze drum, a musical instrument common to many of this province’s people), you’ll find an expansive cultural institution dedicated to telling the stories of Guangxi’s twelve different ethnic groups.

2,000 years of history is on display here, with traditional clothing, musical instruments, tools, silverware, masks, and other items which define ethnic groups from Zhuang to Dong. The level of detail in the exhibits is truly extraordinary, so be sure not to miss this place even if you aren’t a big museum person.

If you missed it when crossing over into China from Vietnam , make plans to backtrack to the border on a day trip from Nanning so you can pay a visit to Detian Falls . A tiered series of waterfalls which straddles the international boundary between Vietnam and China, these powder blue beauties are essentially the tropical equivalent of the Plitvice Lakes Waterfalls in Croatia .

More Attractions

This isn’t a tiny complex of falls by any stretch of the imagination, as it ranks as the largest in all of Asia. This will be a long day, as 140 kilometres separates Nanning from Detian Falls, but it will be worth it for the amazing views to which you’ll be privy during your time there.

There are many limestone karst mountains in Guangxi Province – this means there are quite a few caves around that are just begging to be explored. If getting underground is your thing, then be sure to make time for Yiling Cave during your visit to Nanning.

Unlike rough caves which are only suitable for geared-up spelunkers, this cavern is accessible to casual walkers, as its passages are wide, high, and are lit up (in an assortment of colours), making it easy to admire its many stalactites and stalagmites.

While Nanning lacks the old architecture that cities elsewhere in China have, it is close by to Yangmei Ancient Town . A charming community that is a world away from the modern, hectic life that millions of Chinese live every day, coming here will almost take you back in time several hundred years to the times of the Dynasties.

A peaceful place rooted in tradition, many prominent scholars have come from this humble town, and its beauty has attracted numerous film directors to shoot their movies here over the years. As you walk through its narrow streets, you’ll see multiple examples of architecture typical of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Situated only 30 kilometres away from Nanning proper, Yangmei makes for a great day trip for those who are short on time.

Other Cultural Attractions: Trip to Nanning, China

Get above the streets of Nanning and surround yourself with natural beauty by taking a trip up to Qingxiu Mountain . While more of a large hill than an actual mountain, the privileged views it allows of the city and the surrounding landscape still makes it a worthwhile attraction.

Atop its summit, you’ll find placid lakes, pavilions, and Taoist temples which compliments this park’s natural beauty perfectly. Feel like doing something that will make you feel like a member of the bourgeoisie? There is an 18 hole golf course at the base where you can get in a few swings if it has been too long since you have played this great game.

When the heat of this city has become too much for you to bear, chill out and relax for a bit by dropping by Nanning People’s Park . With scenic pavilions, lakes, bridges, an amusement park for children, and a fortification once occupied by a warlord, it is a peaceful spot to hang out when stress reduction is a priority.

Other Attractions

Hungry? There are numerous food vendors which serve up dishes from across China in and around the park, so find an option which appeals to you and indulge in some authentic Chinese food.

Learn a bit about traditional Chinese medicinal herbs by poking around the Guangxi Medical Botanical Garden . This is not a tiny collection of plants, as there are over 2,000 kinds of medicinal flora which can heal a variety of ailments.

End your time in Nanning by spending an evening grazing at a variety of street food stalls at the Zhongshan Road Night Market . Seafood lovers are taken care of well here, as many vendors deal in foods made from the latest catch. With serving hours stretching into the small hours of the morning, late diners needn’t worry about missing out on the action.

Nanning Travel Guide

Southern China

Local Dialects

Welcome to Nanning!

On the surface, Nanning seems like an ordinary, non-touristy city which is home to over seven million people. But once you arrive there, you’ll find a city that’s become famous for its greenery and relaxing, friendly vibe.

  • Things to do
  • Where to eat
  • Where to stay
  • Around Nanning

Nicknamed the ‘Green City’, Nanning is the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China.

Nanning is filled with trees, and even has streets dedicated to different varieties of trees. This gives a natural and vibrant atmosphere to the entire city.

It also has a humid, subtropical climate with reasonably warm winters, so it’s the ideal escape if you get tired of the icy cold back home.

Nanning is China’s gateway to Vietnam, offering you the chance to take a quick trip over the border – just remember to get a visa ! You should really take advantage of this opportunity if you want to make the most of your time in this part of the world.

The best things do in Nanning

Nanning isn’t that popular among foreign tourists, so the best things to do in the city are the things that the locals love to do as well.

1. Relax in South Lake Park

South Lake Park or Nanhu Park (南湖公园) is huge – it covers about 200 hectares (500 acres) and is located in Nanning’s southeast.

It has a lake in the center that was once a brook, but the area was flooded during the Tang Dynasty, creating a serene water feature in the city’s center.

Nanhu Lake is a good place for a picnic or a relaxing walk on a warm afternoon. It’s particularly good in spring, when the park’s flora and fauna come out to play, so make sure you take plenty of photographs during your visit.

And, when you get hungry, head to one of the park’s fish restaurants for some delicious seafood dishes.

2. Explore the museums

The Guangxi Museum of Nationalities is Nanning’s most popular museum.

The exhibits inside this museum explore the history of the Guangxi region with a particular focus on the region’s ethnic minority groups.

You’ll find a range of art, ceramics, and calligraphy as well as information on the customs of the region’s minorities. This includes a collection of ancient copper drums, an important relic of China’s history.

When you travel to Nanning, you need to learn more about the city and its history. And you can do just that at Nanning Museum .

Housed within an enormous contemporary building, the museum takes you through the city’s history from AD318 in the form of ancient art, ceramics and relics.

There isn’t much English at the museum, but you’ll still enjoy the window into the city’s past and present.

3. See Detian Waterfall

Detian Waterfall is the largest waterfall in Asia, standing at 70 m (230 ft). It straddles the border between China and Vietnam.

The waterfall is absolutely stunning and there’s something new to see in every season. In spring, you can see the waterfall surrounded by bright red flowers and in winter, the lower water will expose more of the cliff side.

No matter what time of year you visit, you’ll get the chance to see the waterfall surrounded by the absolutely stunning natural landscape of the area.

Detian Waterfall is about a two-hour drive from downtown Nanning. Consider booking a private driver as the shuttle bus may take three hours.

4. Climb Qingxiu Mountain

Qingxiu Mountain isn’t really a mountain. It’s just under 289 m (950 ft) tall.

However, with lush tropical greenery, crystal clear lakes and stylistically unique architecture, Qingxiu Mountain is worth visiting.

Mount Qingxiu

Plus, it’s located just 5 km (3 mi) from downtown Nanning.

The area around the mountain is big and hilly, so hop on the little tourist bus for a few yuan and save your feet.

5. Buy some souvenirs and local products

Like most of China, Nanning has been experiencing an economic boom lately, and there’s no better way to experience this than by doing some shopping. Nanning boasts numerous malls and popular shopping areas including:

  • Qixing Street for shopping malls and street vendors
  • Xinning Street for gold and silver jewelry
  • Chaoyang Road for large malls and retailers.

Nanning is also famous for some of its local products like:

  • Zhuang Jin, a kind of brocade
  • Fresh fruit such as mango, pineapple and longan (which is kind of like lychee)
  • Leather goods
  • Gold and silver jewelry.

The Cultural Innovation Space of the Museum of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Store offers traditional Zhuang embroidery and gift boxes filled with tea, wine and food from across the province.

If you’re looking for an unusual Chinese souvenir to take home with you, then you’ll definitely find it in this store.

6. Clamber through Yiling Cave

Located about 18 km (11 mi) from the center of Nanning in Wuming County, this cave is said to be millions of years ago.

It’s filled with a range of stalagmite and stalactites, many of them naturally curved into interesting shapes.

The visual impact of the cave is stunning and it’s well worth getting a little damp and cramped to experience.

Where to eat in Nanning

Because of its location in China’s southwest, Nanning offers a tantalizing mix of cuisines.

The traditional local food tends to be spicy and similar to Cantonese food, but you’ll also find amazing Vietnamese food as well as dishes from other provinces in China .

Some of the most famous dishes in Nanning are:

  • Laoyou (‘old friend’) rice noodle soup
  • Fish head porridge
  • Ba Zhen rice noodles
  • Rolled rice pancakes
  • Fermented vegetables.

Three Streets and Two Lanes

This area comprises three old streets named Xingning Road, Jiefang Road and Minsheng Road, and two ancient lanes named Silver Lion Lane and Golden Lion Lane.

Here, you’ll find lots of historical complexes and houses. Many of the buildings in this area date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties and it’s a popular place at night among the locals and tourists.

In this area, you’ll find a range of traditional foods as well as local restaurants nestled in ancient buildings. All of this makes this street one of the best places to eat in Nanning if you want a bit of atmosphere with your delicious food.

Where to stay in Nanning

The best Nanning accommodation is modern, comfortable, and close to public transport and places to eat and shop.

The Zijinghua Chain Hotel Xiuling Road is close to the local metro station and Guangxi University.

The rooms are simple but clean and come in a variety of sizes to suit all travel groups. The hotel also has its own restaurant in case you don’t feel like going out for a meal.

Xiaduo Hotel opened in 2019, so you know that everything in the hotel is modern and new.

It’s within walking distance of the metro and close to Jinhua Tea Garden and Binhu Square, so you shouldn’t have to go far for a meal or some entertainment!

With a restaurant and a café at the hotel, you’ll never be short of things to eat or drink and everything at the hotel is very clean.

K International Hotel is close to the Folk Song Lake Scenic Area and shopping malls like Wanda Plaza. It’s also just a short walk from the local metro station, so you can explore the rest of the city without too much trouble!

With a café, restaurant and bar, this hotel has everything you’ll need to stay fed and entertained throughout the day and evening. It also has large, modern rooms with bathtubs for a little extra luxury.

Transport in Nanning

Well developed and modern, Nanning’s transport system will make exploring the city simple and cheap.

The easiest way to get to Nanning is by plane.

The Nanning Wuxu International Airport is 32 km (20 mi) from the city center and offers direct routes to domestic cities as well as to nearby international cities like Hanoi and Bangkok.

You can get to the airport by shuttle bus, which runs regularly from the airport to the downtown area for around 15 yuan per person. You can also take a taxi to the airport, after discussing the fare with your driver, or local bus No. 301.

Check out our list of Chinese airlines .

Long distance bus

The highways around Nanning are well developed, making long-distance buses a popular choice for travelers who have a little more time and want to save money.

There are five main bus stations in the city offering buses throughout the province as well as to major cities in China like Beijing and Chengdu .

The bus stations are:

  • Xixiangtang

You can also get to Detian Waterfall or Vietnam from Langdong Bus Station.

Long distance rail

There are two main railway stations in the city: the Nanning Railway Station and the East Railway Station. You can catch trains from one of these stations to cities throughout China.

The Nanning Railway Station mostly offers normal-speed trains as well as overnight trains to Hanoi in Vietnam.

At the East Railway Station, you’ll find mostly high-speed trains, which are a very convenient way to explore China.

The city has plans to build eight metro lines but only four are in operation at the moment with Line 5 under construction.

Nanning isn’t a huge city though, so the four metro lines cover a fair expanse of the city, making them a fast and convenient way to get around.

Nanning Metro

The local buses are plentiful, cheap and easy to use. They run from around 6 am to 11 pm and usually cost CNY1, or CNY2 for a bus with air conditioning.

Many of the buses don’t have conductors, so you’ll need to have the correct change before getting on.

You’ll also need to map out your route before getting on the bus, as there isn’t a lot of English at the bus stops.

Sightseeing bus

Nanning has a sightseeing bus which takes tourists to the top attractions in the city. You can buy two-day tickets for the bus which will allow you to make four trips over those two days.

Here are some of the places that these buses go past:

  • Sightseeing Bus Line A goes to Nanhu Rare Tree Exposition Garden, Jinhu Square, Southeast Asia Food Street, Guangxi Museum of Nationalities and Mt Qingxiu
  • Sightseeing Bus Line B goes to Guangxi Science and Technology Museum, Ethnic Square, and the Flower and Bird Market.

There are lots of taxis in Nanning and they can take you almost anywhere. They are more expensive than the buses or metro, but you won’t have to walk as far, so it evens out.

Just make sure that you have your destination and hotel written down in Chinese as your driver probably won’t speak English.

Traveling outside of Nanning

Some of Nanning’s best features can be found outside of the city limits, particularly if you enjoy getting out into nature!

Vietnam is such a short distance from Nanning that it would be a waste not to visit while you’re in the area.

You’ll need a visa to cross the border though – you can get your visa here .

The largest city close to the border is Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam and one of the most exhilarating and interesting Asian cities you’ll experience.

Hanoi tourist bike transport

The bus from Nanning to Hanoi takes about nine hours but is quite cheap. Jump on a plane if you want to save time.

If you’re not keen on crossing the border but still want to travel a bit, then head north to scenic Guilin with its world-famous hilly landscape.

You can get there by bullet train in under three hours. And you’ll still be in Guangxi.

Daming Mountain

Daming Mountain is the highest mountain in south Guangxi and a first-class natural reserve. It’s also a beautiful scenic spot with peaceful valleys, soaring cliffs, lush forests, and trickling streams.

This is one of the rare places in the south where you can see frost on the trees and the mountain peaks in winter, but this definitely isn’t a skiing destination.

Instead, it’s a place where you can enjoy fire-red trees in the Chinese autumn , and sweet flowers in spring. There’s also a waterfall where you can cool yourself off in the hot, sticky summer.

Yangmei Ancient Town

This town is about a one-hour drive from the center of Nanning at the lower reach of the Zuo River.

It’s the most well-preserved complex from the Ming and Qing Dynasties in the province, and a good place to visit if you want to feel China’s real age.

The town also boasts beautiful scenery that looks just likes scenes you’ll find on Chinese ink paintings. It also offers some tasty and unique local snacks that you won’t find anywhere else.

The trip from Nanning to Yangmei Ancient Town takes around 1.5 hours by bus or 1 hour by boat.

In many ways, Nanning (南宁, Nánníng) is a typical provincial capital with few sights of note, but many of its streets are lined with trees and shaded with a bountiful canopy of leaves, affording welcome shade. It’s also a relaxing and friendly place to recharge your batteries before leaving for, or returning from, Vietnam. It makes for a refreshingly non-touristy destination and one where you'll eat well and get local cultural insights. Nanning's brilliant metro system helps to tame the town's distances.

Shadow disappearing on the summer solstice

An intriguing astronomical spectacle awaits atop Mount Daming in Nanning - the baffling disappearance of shadows at noon. Due to the mountain's position along the Tropic of Cancer, a striking solar illusion occurs annually around the summer solstice, June 22nd. As the sun reaches its zenith directly overhead, shadows vanish mysteriously from sight. People cast no shade, and objects lose their silhouettes. This intriguing "Shadowless Noon" phenomenon bewilders witnesses. Without shadows mapping the sun's angle, an eerie flatteness pervades the mountaintop awash in bright midday light. Join observing crowds gathered to experience this disorienting trick of the eye. Marvel as shadows reappear minutes later, stretched long across the ground. This rare interplay of location and celestial mechanics produces a fleeting moment of magic. Don't miss your chance to witness Shadowless Noon - a perplexing quirk of nature found only on Mount Daming.

Eating all kinds of Rice noodles in Guangxi

In Nanning, a hearty bowl of rice noodles isn't just for breakfast - it's a way of life. These tender, chewy staples come steeped in the local culture and cuisine. From stir-fried to soup, Nanning offers endless variations. Slurp up Old Friends Noodles, a classic soy sauce broth with pork and pickled veggies. Try Liangmian, freshly handmade noodles with your choice of toppings. For a local specialty, savor Ba Zhen Fen, mixed with minced beef and mint. Or dive into bowls brimming with pork, beef, seafood and more. However you take your noodles, their satisfying textures and flavors provide the perfect vehicle for Nanning flavors. With locals consuming over 600 million bowls a year, noodles run deep as comfort food and a taste of home. Sample your way through the diverse rice noodle dishes that define Nanning cuisine. Let these hearty, soulful creations nourish you from the inside out.

Climb to the top of the clouds and enjoy the scenery in the air

Soar to new heights at the Sky Deck atop Nanning's iconic 276-meter Diwang Building. Ascend from the basement to the 59th-floor observation level in just 90 seconds via ultra-fast elevators. Step out onto the open-air platform for jaw-dropping views of Nanning through transparent glass floors. With nothing but air below your feet, feel your pulse quicken as you walk the precipice. Gaze out over the metropolis in a 360-degree perspective from enclosed viewing corridors. Scan the landscapes through telescopes to watch shifting city scenes. When dusk falls, see Nanning illuminate with glistening night lights. Capture photos against unobstructed backdrops showcasing the city's energy and scale. For a thrill and panoramas to remember, visit the Sky Deck and experience Nanning from the highest vantage point around. Tickets cost 50 CNY per person to ride this sky-high elevator up to the clouds.

Take a bull cart to visit the ancient town

Step back in time with an ox cart ride through Nanning's well-preserved Yangmei Ancient Town. Climb aboard a wooden cart and let the gentle clop of hooves transport you to bygone eras of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Gaze up at ornately carved windows and eaves lining the street, standing for centuries. Listen to creaking wheels echo down stone-paved lanes shaded by ancient banyans. Feel the relaxed pace of life as you meander past historic architecture and glimpses into traditional ways. For another scenic journey, board a boat to trace the route of famous Chinese explorer Xu Xiake along the Liu River. Drift past poetic landscapes that inspired his travel writings centuries ago. However you choose to travel, soak up the historic charm and natural beauty preserved in Yangmei Ancient Town. Let these time-honored journeys show you a Nanning of the past.

Emergency call, safety considerations.

When at crowded places like train stations, bus terminals, and metro stations, keep a close eye on your belongings to prevent theft. Areas with high tourist traffic like Tiananmen Square also attract scammers, so tourists should be wary of unlicensed guides demanding money upfront. Avoid handing over any cash to solicitations on the street. Use registered taxi companies like the red Beijing taxis whenever possible. Keep valuables secured and hidden, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, and be alert in public transportation hubs and tourist sites. When needing assistance, go to authorized help points like the Beijing Tourist Information booths rather than individuals roaming the streets. Beijing is a generally safe city if simple precautions are taken. Report any incidents or suspicious activities immediately to the nearest police officer. They can also provide directions and other help. Enjoy sightseeing, but remain aware of the surroundings.

nanning china travel service

Nanning (南宁; Nánníng) is the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in south-west China . It is a large, modern city and a transport gateway for travellers to and from Vietnam .

Understand [ edit ]

District: Jiangnan District, Xingning District, Qingxiu District, Liangqing District, Xixiangtang District, Wuming District, Yongning District

Talk [ edit ]

Though the older people speak Cantonese (白话 báihuà), the younger generation mainly speak Mandarin (普通话 pǔtōnghuà). Nanning is regarded as one of the most successful cities in China in terms of popularizing Mandarin or 'common language'. So it is a very good place to learn Putonghua. Universities offering Chinese courses are many, including Guangxi University for Nationalities and Guangxi University. However, be aware that Nanning people, like virtually all Chinese in the south, have a non-standard pronunciation for many of the basic sounds of Mandarin (which comes from the northern Han people). The local dialect of Cantonese has a distinctive accent that is noticeably different from standard Cantonese, though it will still be largely comprehensible to fluent speakers of standard Cantonese.

Nanning, as the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, embraces the Zhuang ethnic language, and virtually all public building signs in Guangxi display the Zhuang written text alongside Chinese. It is not to be confused with pinyin, the romanized phonetic transliteration of Mandarin.

Stay safe [ edit ].

Chinese cities are generally speaking very safe in terms of violent crimes, and Nanning is no exception. But petty crimes like pickpocketing are quite common. On public transportation, be extra-careful about your mobile phones and wallets.

Pyramid/Ponzi schemes are endemic in Nanning, and similar to other pyramid schemes in China, criminals operating these schemes can resort to violence if their scam is about to be exposed. Simply avoid any dubious investment scheme is sufficient for normal visitors. You should also be careful if strangers are trying to talk to you and sell you something or leading you somewhere.

Vibrant Q1 consumption mirrors China's economic stamina

nanning china travel service

BEIJING -- China's economic outlook remains positive as the country's consumer spending surged in the first quarter of 2024, signaling a strong contribution to domestic demand and overall economic growth.

China's retail sales of consumer goods, a major indicator of the country's consumption strength, climbed 4.7 percent year-on-year in Q1 2024, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.

Analysts believe that the sustained growth in consumer spending is a testament to China's economic resilience and the effectiveness of policy measures aimed at stimulating domestic demand.

According to a research note by Zhongtai Securities, the per capita disposable income of Chinese residents reached 11,539 yuan ($1,625) in Q1, with per capita consumer spending hitting 7,299 yuan.

The marginal propensity to consume, measured by the ratio of consumption expenditure to disposable income, stood at 63.3 percent, marking a new high since 2020.

Yuekai Securities echoed the optimism, noting that China's economy has continued to show signs of recovery, underpinned by improvements in supply and demand. The business expectations index within the purchasing managers' index data pointed upwards, reflecting a gradual restoration of confidence among microeconomic entities.

The demand structure revealed that service consumption, high-end manufacturing investment, and infrastructure investment were the main drivers, said Yuekai Securities in a research note.

The total retail sales of consumer goods experienced a monthly growth rate of 0.03 percent, 0.01 percent, and 0.26 percent for January, February, and March, respectively, with a significant acceleration in March, the note said.

"China's economic recovery is primarily attributed to three factors: the resilience of a large economy, a long industrial chain, and distinct advantages of economies of scale," said Yuekai Securities.

Service consumption emerged as one of the highlights of the Q1 data.

As Sheng Laiyun, deputy head of the NBS, told a press conference, service consumption contributed 55.7 percent to economic growth in Q1.

The number of trips made during the Spring Festival holiday jumped 34.3 percent year-on-year, exceeding that of the same period in 2019. Tourism consumption during the holiday also surpassed the level seen in the same period in 2019, official data showed.

Great Wall Securities analyst Jiang Fei noted that in the first quarter, the manufacturing sector showed relative strength in investment, and infrastructure investment demonstrated resilience. On the consumer front, the enthusiasm for travel and tourism among residents has driven consumption in related industries."

A recent forecast by Trip.com, a prominent online travel agency, anticipates a steady increase in travel enthusiasm during the upcoming Labor Day holiday over last year's high base levels.

Wang Guanhua, spokesperson for the NBS, emphasized the importance of consumption in stimulating and expanding domestic demand.

"China has an ultra-large consumer market with a population of over 1.4 billion," Wang said. "The potential for consumption is vast, and its resilience is our greatest strength and source of confidence."
