Perched on the Iberian Peninsula bordering Spain, Portugal has never quite attracted the same level of tourist interest as its neighbouring continental counterparts, but its distinct culture makes it a worthy alternative. While many chose to explore the country independently, there are also a wide number of group tours available which allow you to meet and share your experiences with fellow travellers. We’ve picked out 5 of the best small-group tours of Portugal currently on offer.

Highlights of Portugal (7 days)

This action-packed week-long tour will introduce you to Portugal’s main highlights. Over the course of the trip, you’ll wander the hilly streets of coastal Lisbon, where you can munch on a custard tart while gazing at sun-dappled architecture, get your fill of history and culture at UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Monastery of Batalha, step back in history wandering charming hill towns like Sintra, take a day trip to the coastal town of Aveiro, and visit the pilgrimage sites of Fátima. The tour ends in the historic city of Porto via the majestic Douro Valley where you can learn to become a port connoisseur in the birthplace of the famous fortified wine. From €1,203 per person.

Walking in Madeira (8 days)

portugal tours small group

Comprising four islands off the northwest coast of Africa, the archipelago of Madeira is known for its namesake wine, subtropical climate and rugged volcanic landscape featuring high cliffs and pebbly beaches. This 8-day walking excursion invites you to experience all of this – and more –  as part of a small group of travellers. The trip starts in Santana before taking in Porto da Cruz, followed by the unique network of levadas and ancient footpaths in  Madeira, allowing you to discover the many different sides to this beautiful island. Walk through Laurel forest, along cliff tops to the Ponta de São Lourenço and past alluring waterfalls. The tour ends in Funchal, Madeira’s capital city. From €964 per person.

Best of the Azores (7 days)

Portugal’s Azores archipelago in the mid-Atlantic comprises a chain of islands characterised by dramatic landscapes, fishing villages, green pastures and hedgerows of blue hydrangeas. This 7-day tour takes you through this magical region, with each traveller having the option to add or reduce the number of days as they please. Trip highlights include relaxing in hot thermal waters, taking in the views from the Vista do Rei ‘s viewpoint at Sete Cidades volcanic complex, exploring the picturesque town of Sete Cidades where lunch will be served in a local restaurant, visiting the Caldeira Velha nature reserve, stopping in the ancient whaling village of Capelas, and strolling around the historic city of Ribeira Grande city. Ideal for those who prefer to take the scenic route rather than arduous road trips along unsightly highways, this 8-day tour includes high-speed train travel between destinations, offering the chance to soak up the views as you hurtle along through the verdant Portuguese countryside and past picture-perfect towns and villages. Stop-offs along the way will include a full-day exploration of the city of Oporto, a visit to the picturesque Douro Region, a cruise along the River Douro, a city tour of Lisbon, a trip to the Pena Palace grandly located at the top of the gorgeous Serra de Sintra, and a look around the coastal villages of Cascais and Estoril, known as the “Portuguese Riviera”. The tour starts in Porto and ends in Lisbon. From €1,580 per person.

Best of Portugal (11 days)

If you’ve got plenty of time to spare and a budget to match, this extended immersive tour shows you – as the name suggest – the very best of Portugal over 11 busy but relaxed days. Starting and ending in Lisbon, over the course of the trip you will visit a grand total of 15 cities, as well as a number of different smaller towns, villages and off-the-grid rural spots. Highlights will include exploring a Templar stronghold, watching thoroughbreds perform at an Alentejo farm and visiting the sun-kissed Algarve. There’ll also be time to explore Lisbon, Coimbra, Tomar, Évora and Porto, all in the company of a local specialist who will regale you with fun facts and tales along the way. From €2,567 per person.

"We spent two wonderful weeks touring several of the best destinations in Portugal & Spain with a group of 16 people. Our guide (Fredy) was from Spain and intimately familiar with the region, including its rich history, attractions, and food/beverages. The tour was well-paced using a combinations of private vehicles (small buses and cabs), trains, and an airplane ride as well as a fair amount of walking to get around these two beautiful countries. We extended our stay in Lisbon to see more attractions and took a side trip to Fatima, Obidos, and Nazare that was also excellent. Would have liked to have a bit more time in a couple of the cities, but we'll just have to plan another trip!"

Additional details

Tours in Portugal cover a very wide range of activity levels and interests. If you want to explore Portugal only, there are a few tours that focus on the country only however the majority of Portugal tours will also visit Spain, and sometimes Morocco. Portugal is also a popular port of call for small ship cruises to Europe.

Who will enjoy traveling in Portugal?

Portugal is great for travelers who are interested in a less visited European country. With its Mediterranean vibes combined with ancient history Portugal presents a unique travel opportunity while still remaining within the realms of comfortable travel.

For those who might be looking to stretch their comfort zone, you could consider a tour that also visits Portugal’s nearby neighbor, Morocco - a country with whom it shares much history.

Wine lovers as well should definitely consider a trip to Portugal, where the wine regions are still rugged and salt of the earth. You’ll encounter many different kinds of wine, but the major draw in portugal is the Port.

What is the weather like in Portugal?

Portugal is a small country, half of which is bordered with North Atlantic sea coastline to the west and south. The climate is largely Mediterranean and you can expect several microclimates throughout your journey. So definitely bring layers no matter what time of year you choose to tour Portugal.

The weather in Portugal is fairly mild, with the warmest months in the summer reaching around 80 degrees F, and the coolest months in the winter reaching the low 60s, with light to moderate rainfall.

What is the best time to visit Portugal?

While Portugal is a welcoming country for tourists pretty much year round, there are some things to keep in mind when planning your visit. Summertime is the peak season, and you can expect much higher crowds and prices while traveling around the country.

In June, there are major festivals held in Lisbon and Porto. Though they have religious roots, the festivals can be enjoyed by anyone looking for a good time with lots of live music and delicious traditional foods. If meeting locals, visiting small towns, and getting an authentic sense of local community, you should definitely try and attend the June festivals in Portugal.

What to wear in Portugal

Fashion in Portugal is causal - you’ll fit in just fine with jeans pretty much anywhere. Pack comfortable walking shoes or sandals. Most cities in Portugal are set up for walking - though they aren’t always flat! The 25 de Abril Bridge is not the only similarity Portugal has to San Francisco - you will experience some hills while walking around.

Sun hats, sunglasses, and light breathable clothing is recommended for the summertime. In winter, you will probably experience some rain so be sure to pack a waterproof jacket.

Even though the weather is toasty in summertime, be sure to bring a pair of long pants and shoulder covering scarf or top for when you visit churches and cathedrals.

Portugal ms1

The Algarve is alluring for its stunning coast and laidback feel. Coastal Algarve receives much acclaim for its breathtaking cliffs, golden beaches, scalloped bays and sandy islands. But it is also rich in history. There are Moorish and Renaissance influences abound. Here, the famous voyager, Prince Henry the Navigator, began his explorations and Vasco da Gama sailed in 1499 on his epic voyage of discovery. The enchanting inner Algarve boasts pretty castle towns and historic villages, cork tree– and flower-covered hillsides, and birdlife.

Portugal ms2

Spread across steep hillsides that overlook the Rio Tejo, Lisbon offers all the delights you’d expect of Portugal’s star attraction, yet with half the fuss of other European capitals. Gothic cathedrals, majestic monasteries and quaint museums are all part of the colorful cityscape, but the real delights of discovery lie in wandering the narrow lanes of Lisbon’s lovely backstreets. The Lisbon experience encompasses so many things, from enjoying a fresh pastry and bica (espresso) on a petite leafy plaza to window-shopping in elegant Chiado. It’s mingling with Lisboêtas at a neighborhood festival or watching the sunset from the old Moorish castle.

In the blue Atlantic Ocean, between Europe and America, the 9 islands of the archipelago are an autonomous region of Portugal. Rich in culture, abundant in wildlife and one of the best whale watching spots in the world. The array of activities offered means you could be visiting a UNESCO World Heritage site one day, walking up a snow-capped mountain and soaking in thermal rock pools the next day, and then swimming with wild dolphins and watching sperm whales the day after. Whether you are an outdoor enthusiast, nature lover or just want to relax on a beautiful exotic island, The Azores is an archipelago of lush green volcanic islands ready for you to explore.

Portuguese Riviera:

The Riviera stretches from Lisbon and Cascais. The coastline has become a place where the elite vacation between September and October, and a popular tourist destination for its chic look. Removed from the city, the Lisbon coastline is easy access to all the culture that Lisbon offers. It has become a hotspot for major international celebrities from the world of fashion, sport, and entertainment. The Riviera is also known for its world-class conditions for surfing.

Destination Must-Do's

Portugal md1

Fado Performance:

Fado is a popular style of music in Lisbon, Portugal. In Lisbon, Fado is always sung by a solo performer, while in other regions of Portugal it is typically performed in a group. Fado can be traced back to the 1820s, but it is said to have much earlier origins. This style of music has a dramatic sound with lyrics that speak of the struggles of daily life, and the melodies, performed by string instruments, are melancholy.

Portugal md2

Alentejo Wine Region:

The Alentejo region is a land reminiscent of Tuscany, with its vast landscape dotted with vineyards, cork oaks and olive trees. The land has seen occupation of the Romans and Moors which is reflected in the well-preserved city of Evora, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wine is perhaps its biggest treasure. Here there are more than 250 wine producers who create aromatic, fresh white wines and more intense, smooth, ruby reds.

Portugal md3

São Miguel Island:

Known as “The Green Island,” this is the largest in the archipelago. Dazzling lakes, sandy beaches and dramatic mountains provide a stunning backdrop while tea plantations and pineapple groves make full use of the hillsides. Visit fascinating villages like Furnas, built inside a volcanic crater; and geological wonders such as Sete Cidades, twin crater lakes linked by narrow passage. It is also an excellent base from which to explore the wide variety of outdoor activities that make The Azores a top destination.

Portugal md4

Similar to Spain’s paradors, Portugal’s pousadas began to operate in the mid-20th century and showcase a true taste of their location. In addition to regional hospitality and cuisine, these beautiful hotels — often in idyllic locations — offer visitors a sense of history, culture and tradition. They are uniquely Portuguese and reside in some of the most beautiful areas; some actually sit in the shadows of historic monuments. These luxurious accommodations highlight great attention to detail, exceptional service and warm hospitality. From historic castles and former monasteries or convents to palaces and fortresses, they embody the Explorations concept of accommodations that capture the spirit of your destination.

Best of Lisbon Tour (with Sintra, Évora and Cascais) - 5 Days in Portugal

Thank you so much for a great experience. I didn't have to worry about booking anything including transportation from and to the airport. They were quick to respond if I had any questions. Some feedback. It would be helpful to have the names of the tour company on the itinerary and update the description. For example they changed the Evora trip and it didnt include what was on my itinerary. Also beware to take 10 euros to pay for the Palace in Sintra. I wasn't aware but luckily I had change. Also just a heads up if you use this company, the Lisbon tour doesn't include the main attractions so you may need to book an additional Lisbon tour. I wouldn't change this Lisbon tour though. It was worth it. I also recommend staying an extra day and booking a day tour to Fatima, Nazare, and Obidos. Thank you so much for everything!

Portugal in Depth Tour

Portugal in Depth

42 people on one bus is far too many. The bus is too huge and the back stairs too steep. Too many overcooked chicken meals at hotels. All out-of-hotel included dining experiences were great. The farewell dinner was particularly excellent, as was the Evora hotel dinner. The guide was the best I've ever had after a lifetime to travel. This is particularly rare for Globus to have such a wonderful employee. He never talked about himself or his personal life. Yet, he managed to get close to every single traveller on the very overcrowded tour. He was funny, but didn't think he was. He was full of information, but not too much information. The driver was excellent, though perhaps too much in his work like a mute servant in a Mozart opera. His handling of the obnoxiously huge bus has amazing. (Streets in Portugal are not designed for these monster busses...nor for the monster crowds of tourists who inhabit them.)

Highlights of the Azores Tour

Highlights of the Azores

A very beautiful place with wonderful landscapes, thermal baths, cheese and wine. Our guide Sasha was lovely and very informative as well as delightful to talk too. I enjoyed all the activities but do ensure you were good shoes for the home. recommend that a visit to the cheese factory is added the morning you arrive on Sao Jorge.

One of the best Solo travel ( then joining a group?) I ever did.Been traveling since I was 27, am 56 now.. every birthday month of mine I treat myself on seeing beautiful countries I’ve never been. Am glad I found this site and this tour. The tour itinerary was great, the tour guide is great we all love her ( Myriam ), and our driver ( Hrui). I love small group guided tour. This is a must do your when visiting Portugal. Even if you are not a fan of Port the history and importance of the area along with the beautiful countryside along with additional histories make for a fantastic experience. Our guide was incredible as we're all guides with Greyline. Highly, highly recommended.

Too little time spent on optional excursions. Hotels okay. City tours only from bus. Little walking tour of Lisbon and Porto. Stayed in Lisbon xtra day to explore and walk. Optional farewell dinner overpriced. Whole tour overpriced.

What people love about portugal tours.

We had a fantastic time. Exploring the island through jeep tour and kayaking was exhilarating. The whale watching and local food experiences were delightful, and the guides were truly local and knowledgeable. This tour was an unforgettable journey, would take it again, thank yuou.
We had a great group. Itinerary was just what I was looking for. Everyone could choose what they wanted to do during the day.
Above and beyond my expectations attributed to the tour guide Ana Rita and the bus driver Mario..

Tripadvisor.

My wife and I feel very fortunate to have booked 2 tours with “Portuguese For A Day”. We enjoyed our first trip with co-owner Andre and the Sintra + trip had the same high quality level. We started the day with an 8:10 AM pick-up. This early starting time got us to the Pena Palace just before it opened. The Palace was empty and we had no problem taking photos with crowds of tourists around. By the time we were leaving, lines were long and getting longer. It was such a pleasure to have the access to this amazing place that we did. The tour was filled with interesting information, useful observations and a genuine friendliness among the 5 other people. Andre is not a lock-step guide but uses planning and his insights to give you the chance to chart your own path of discovery.(…)

We are having tea with our pastries and reliving the happy memories of today.  We really, really enjoyed meeting you and appreciated all that you shared.  We are also very happy you suggested early admission to Pena Palace. It was so worth it! We also loved Regaleira! Both places are a photographer’s paradise. Thank you for being so warm, welcoming and patient. Will definitely recommend you and the tour to others.

I think going on this road trip was the best thing during my 3 day trip to Lisbon. Sintra is a hidden treasure that is best to do with a company as it can be complicated to go on your own. We had fun with Andre and communicating about culture, tourism, art, and most importantly our love to travel. Sintra is very colorful and has so many things to do. I was happy with my choice and If I go to Lisbon again, I would definitely pick this company for another day trip in Portugal.

James S. | July 2020

Best tour of our trip so far! During this unprecedented time, Portuguese for a Day tours remain open during the COVID crisis. They adhere to the highest safety protocols by following the Clean & Safe commitment. Masks were required to be worn at all times, and we were given a “COVID prevention gift bag” at the start of the tour (…) The tour itself exceeded expectations! André was friendly, knowledgeable and went out of his way to make sure we had a great experience. (…)  Andre and Portuguese for a Day provided a memorable and enjoyable tour without compromising our safety. I highly recommend this tour and company for anyone wanting to explore Portugal (both during and after COVID!)

Did you know there’s a little Portugal tucked ...

Did you know there’s a little Portugal tucked way in Coimbra where everything is shrunk to a miniature size? This is Portugal dos Pequenitos, which literally translates to Portugal of the Little Ones. It’s a park built in the 40s that lets you explore tiny replicas of traditional Portuguese homes from the sunny Algarve to the historic North. But it’s not just houses. There are pint-sized versions of Portugal’s most iconic monuments and buildings. Just imagine stepping into a mini Lisbon… And the adventure doesn’t stop in mainland. You can check out the mini wonders of Madeira and Azores and embark on a tour around the Portuguese speaking world from Angola to Brazil, Cape Verde and beyond! This is perfect for families and the young at heart. Portugal dos Pequenitos is a journey through Portugal’s rich culture and heritage all in miniature! Like the founder said: “everything is tiny for us but big for the children, and everything is real!” So whether you’re big or small, make sure you add this to your trip to Portugal! 📍Portugal dos Pequenitos ...

Óbidos is a charming medieval gem surrounded by ancient walls. Known for its narrow cobblestone streets, colorful houses, and vibrant flowers, Óbidos offers a delightful journey back in time. More than a touristic destination, Óbidos has been the meeting point for many artists throughout time, and to this day you can find little shops and workshops selling local handicrafts & art pieces. Best time to visit: all year round, but Óbidos is even prettier on each of these festivities: - Chocolate Fair 🍫 March - Easter 🐣 Holy Week - Óbidos Medieval Market 🏰 July - Folio Festival 📚 October - Óbidos Christmas Market 🎄 December ✍️ Add this to your trip to Portugal! ...

Welcome to Portugal

With more sunshine per year than any other European country, rich cultural legacies, and delectable cuisine filled with traditions and memories – Portugal welcomes you.

Cruise the douro river in a traditional rabelo boat, in porto, cruise the douro river in a traditional, rabelo boat, used for centuries to transport port wine.

Before the age of the railroads, the rabelo – a traditional, flat-bottomed Portuguese wooden cargo boat – was the fastest and best means of transporting port wine and other goods between the Douro Valley and the city of Porto, from which the precious Port is exported around the world. The rabelo (or "little tail," for the long timber piece on the back that's used to steer the boat), native to the Douro River region, can't be found anywhere else on Earth… and you'll take a cruise aboard one on the River Douro during your visit.

Explore Pinhão by a town walkabout or a terraced vineyard hike

Hiking from provesende through terraced vineyards to pinhão.

The idyllic village of Pinhão, situated at a scenic bend of Portugal's Douro River, is considered the gateway to the quintas and large wine estates of the Douro River Valley, one of Europe's oldest and revered wine making regions. Enjoy a hike through some of the area's lush terraced vineyards on your visit to Pinhão and its stunningly beautiful landscapes.

Lisbon, Portugal

From exquisite azulejos to a tauck exclusive at the "portuguese versailles" in portugal's historic capital, lisbon.

A vision of carefully planned, elegant streets, Lisbon's historic city center greets you with an 18th-century ambiance attesting to its days of glory during the Age of Discovery. Tauck welcomes you to Portugal's capital with experiences including a visit to Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, built in the 16th century with "pepper money" profits from the spice trade; tours of the Maritime Museum, chronicling the history of Portugal's pioneering role in sea exploration, and the National Tile Museum, dedicated to the art and history of azulejos, those exquisite glazed ceramic tiles found throughout Portugal; and a Tauck Exclusive private tour and dinner in the Throne Room of the Palacio Nacional de Queluz (Palace of Queluz), a Rococo gem often called the "Portuguese Versailles."

Guimarães, the "Cradle City"

Discovering guimarães, portugal's "cradle city".

The Portuguese call the city of Guimarães, in the northern region of Braga, Cidade Berço (the "Cradle City") for the key role it played in the birth of the Kingdom of Portugal following the 12th-century Battle of São Mamede… and because it's believed that the country's first king was born there. You'll hear these and other tidbits of Portuguese history on a tour of the city, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site; its architectural treasures include the ruined Castle of Guimaraes, and the medieval Palace of the Dukes of Braganza.

Cruising the Douro River

Explore the douro river valley aboard ms andorinha.

Portugal's Douro River Valley is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world – especially famous for its Port wine – and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And there's no better way to explore this beautiful corner of Europe… from its Atlantic port city of Porto at the mouth of the river, to the ancient villages, vineyards and quintas dotting its banks… than aboard Tauck's newest riverboat, ms Andorinha, expressly designed for cruising the golden Douro.
