How Princess Anne Honored Her Mother On Her Highly-Anticipated Visit To Uganda
Princess Anne is back to performing her royal duties just a month after the heartbreaking death of her mother, Queen Elizabeth . The monarch's only daughter set out on an ambitious 4-day trip to Uganda with her husband, Sir Tim Laurence.
Royal expert Omid Scobie tweeted some of the stops they will make along the way. They include visiting a school for the blind in Salaama and opening the first bank ever in the Nakivale Refugee Settlement. The couple also plans to visit projects in the Kyangwali Refugee Settlement.
Earlier in the month, the princess visited New York City , which came as a surprise to everyone (via People ). It was the first time a royal has visited the United States since Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle moved to California in March 2020 at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic (via Vanity Fair ).
Though Anne is traveling on official work, she is still honoring her mother in a very endearing way.
Princess Anne wore Her Majesty's brooch on royal tour
Always one to go against the grain, Princess Anne participated in Queen Elizabeth's funeral with great symbolism. She made history at the Queen's vigil by becoming the first woman ever to participate in a tradition known as the "Vigil of the Princes" (via Town & Country ). She also wore full military garb.
Now the princess royal is continuing to honor her mother while on tour. While in Uganda's capital Kampala, hosting a dinner for the President of the Republic of Uganda, Yoweri K Museveni and his daughter Natasha, Anne wore her mother's Empress Maria Feodorovna's sapphire brooch (via Express ). The sapphire brooch is bordered by a double line of diamonds and also has a removable pearl droplet.
The brooch was originally purchased back in 1866 by the Princess of Wales as a wedding gift for her sister, Empress Maria Feodorovna (via Daily Mail ). Queen Elizabeth inherited the brooch when she became queen, and it has now been passed down to Princess Anne.
The Princess Royal visits refugee settlement in Uganda
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Patron of Save the Children UK, has met families in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement in Uganda.
The purpose of her visit was to learn more about the impact conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has had on childrenâs lives.
Uganda currently hosts 5 million refugees - the largest refugee population in Africa. Due to the ongoing conflict in the DRC, thousands of refugees have crossed the border into Uganda this year (HNHCR Uganda - Refugee Statistics 2022).
In March 2020, schools across the country shut down as the Covid-19 pandemic took hold. Uganda kept schools fully or partly closed for over a year and a half, meaning children in Uganda faced the worldâs longest school closure due to the pandemic. [2] To help children successfully return to school, Save the Children launched Catch-up Clubs to accelerate the recovery of lost learning.
Her Royal Highness visited a school in Kyangwali Refugee Settlement where she joined a Save the Children Catch-up Club and took part in an activity with children to work together and build a story from pictures. Later that day, The Princess also met children who have fled their homes due to the ongoing conflict in the DRC and are being supported by Save the Childrenâs child protection activities at a Child Friendly Space.

Dragana Strinic, Country Director of Save the Children Uganda said:
"It was an honour to host Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal today to raise awareness of the impact that conflict and Covid-19 school closures are having on millions of children in Uganda. Due to the ongoing conflict, Save the Childrenâs Catch-up Clubs have been a lifeline for children growing up in Kyangwali refugee settlement. Without these clubs, some of these children may never have returned to school."
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has supported Save the Children for over fifty years. Queen Elizabeth II was a patron of the charity for 65 years. During this time they have both inspired thousands of supporters, volunteers, and staff, and highlighted the needs of some of the most disadvantaged children.
HRH The Princess Royal became the Patron of Save the Children UK in 2017 after serving as the charityâs President since 1970. The Princess Royal spends a significant amount of time visiting Save the Childrenâs projects, both overseas and in the UK. She has travelled to Bangladesh, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Mozambique, Ethiopia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Over a quarter of a billion children are out of school globally and a record number of children - 1 in 6 - are living in war zones around the world. The Childrenâs Emergency Fund allows Save the Children to support children growing up in conflict and help children keep learning in times of crises.
Every child has the same potential, but not all have the opportunity to realise it.

The Princess Royal joined the charity, Save the Children.
Accompanied by her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence on the official royal visit, Princess Anne met with people from Kyangwali Refugee Settlement to learn more about the impact conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has had on childrenâs lives as well as how Covid-19 has affected them.
As a Patron of Save the Children UK, Her Royal Highness met with people from the local school and took part in an activity with a 'Catch-up Club' run by the Save the Children charity. Later, The Princess also met children being supported at a 'Child Friendly Space' after fleeing their homes due to ongoing conflict in the country.
During the pandemic, Uganda kept schools fully or partly closed for over a year and a half. This meant that children in the country faced the worldâs longest school closure due to Covid 19, according to Save the Children . This led the organisation to launch its 'Catch-Up Clubs' to help close the gap of lost learning over the period, and encourage children to return to school.
In a release, Country Director of Save the Children Uganda, Dragana Strinic, said, âIt was an honour to host Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal today to raise awareness of the impact that conflict and Covid-19 school closures are having on millions of children in Uganda.
"Due to the ongoing conflict, Save the Childrenâs Catch-up Clubs have been a lifeline for children growing up in Kyangwali refugee settlement. Without these clubs, some of these children may never have returned to school.â

Princess Anne Wore Queen Elizabeth's Brooch During Her Uganda Trip
The sapphire brooch has a long royal history.
According to Lauren Kiehna of The Court Jewller , the brooch has a long royal history. It was first made for Empress Marie Feodorovna, the sister-in-law of King Edward VII. Following her death in 1928, her daughters decided to auction off her jewelry collectionâincluding the sapphire brooch. In 1930, Queen Mary purchased the brooch for ÂŁ2,375. After Queen Mary's death in 1953, Queen Elizabeth inherited all her royal jewelry.
The sapphire, diamond, and pearl brooch became a staple of Queen Elizabeth's wardrobeâand now it seems as if the brooch has passed to her only daughter, Princess Anne. While the Palace has not confirmed if it is indeed Empress Marie Feodorovna's sapphire brooch that Anne is wearing, by all indications, it seems to be.
Anne chose to pear the brooch with a three-strand pearl necklace and diamond and sapphire earrings. You can see her full outfit here:
Since the royal mourning period ended for Queen Elizabeth, Princess Anne has been busy. She visited New York City earlier this month, taking a trip on the Staten Island Ferry , and spent last week in Uganda , supporting many of her patronages.
The Princess Royal has also hosted numerous investitures, including awarding Daniel Craig with the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) âan honor shared with his fictional character, James Bond.

Princess Eugenie just customised her ÂŁ1600 designer dress for a very important reason
The daughter of prince andrew teamed the dress with high street shoes...
Princess Eugenie and her big sister, Princess Beatrice , are currently at the  World Economy Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and their fashion has been seriously on point during the conference.
Mother-of-two Eugenie in particular looked stunning in a gorgeous black and red floral dress, which came from royally-loved brand Erdem. Her chosen design for this trip is known as the âRoisinâ Floral-Print Pleated Midi Dress, which she has worn many times before and is worth around ÂŁ1600.The pleated style is uber flattering due to the high neck, ruffle sleeves, and waist-defining belt. It also has a midi hem, too.Â
To be respectful to the culture in Saudi Arabia, the wife of Jack Brooksbank actually customised the look and wore a black top underneath to cover her arms.
According to the website  Tourist Saudi , "To avoid offending local sensibilities, or be challenged by the powerful religious police, men and women should cover as much skin as possible."

We also love that the youngest daughter of Prince Andrew rocked a pair of high street shoes! Eugneie chose the 'Hopeful black branded-snaffle-Trim ballet shoes' by Dune Londin which cost ÂŁ85. Royally-approved shoes for under ÂŁ100? Bargain!
We've been loving the 34-year-old's outfit choices of late. Earlier this month, she headed to the Royal Albert Hall with Beatrice and wore the most chicest, versatile handbag and it's perfect for spring 2024.Â
The royal rocked a grey cashmere mini dress from Gabriela Hearst, suede nude Gianvito Rossi 105 pumps, and the Lana Osette midi bag from Strathberry in a cream colourway with contrasting tan edges. The bag is essentially a bucket bag, featuring a drawstring closure and leather top handle. Though it also comes with a leather crossbody strap, Eugenie carried hers by its handle to give the accessory a more evening-appropriate feel.
Strathberry is loved by the royal ladies. Meghan Markle put the brand on the map first , back in 2017 during her first engagement when she carried one of the brand's bags. The Princess of Wales followed suit and now has a fleet of their handbags , and also the York sisters. There's nothing like a royal stamp of approval, right?

Duke and Duchess of Sussex to visit Nigeria in May after Meghan learnt of her heritage
The country expresses its âhonour and delightâ at the visit which is linked to the Invictus Games
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are to make a joint trip to Nigeria in May 2024, it has been confirmed.
The countryâs defence headquarters expressed its âhonour and delightâ that the Sussexes had accepted an invitation for a visit. They are expected to meet military servicemen and women and be hosted at an âarray of cultural activitiesâ for a trip linked to the Invictus Games .
On Sunday, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau published a letter in which he said the visit would âconsolidate Nigeriaâs strong holdâ of the games, as well as the âpossibility of hosting the event [in] later yearsâ.
Further details will be confirmed by the Sussexesâ office nearer the time.
Nigerian Misan Harriman , the coupleâs friend and favoured photographer, acknowledged the news on X, formerly Twitter, with a heart and flag emoji, raising speculation that he may travel with them to capture the trip.
Prince Harry is travelling to London to take part in a 10th anniversary service for the Invictus Games at St Paulâs Cathedral on May 8. Meghan is not thought to be attending.
â43 per cent Nigerianâ
In 2022, the Duchess told her podcast listeners that she had recently discovered she was â43 per cent Nigerianâ after doing a genealogy test.
At the opening ceremony of the 2023 Invictus Games in Dusseldorf, Germany , the Duke made reference to the link as he hailed Nigeria â along with Colombia and Israel â for sending its first delegation to the games for injured, sick and wounded veterans.
âNow, Iâm not saying we play favourites in our home, but since my wife discovered she is of Nigerian descent , itâs likely to get a little bit more competitive this year,â he said.
It will be one of few overseas tours the couple have done since leaving the Royal family. In January 2024 they visited Jamaica for the premiere of the Bob Marley film One Love, and they undertook what was described as a quasi-royal tour to New York in September 2021.
They have also appeared at Invictus Games events in the Netherlands and, most recently, Canada. The Duchess has not travelled to the UK since the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.
The King and Queen, then the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, last visited Commonwealth country Nigeria in 2018.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are headed to Nigeria!
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have accepted an invitation to visit the country in May on behalf of its Chief of Defense Staff, the highest-ranking military official, PEOPLE confirms.
Harry, 39, is set to travel to the U.K. next week to attend numerous Invictus Games Foundation-related events in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the games, including a service at St. Paul's Cathedral in London on May 8. Soon after, he will be joined by Meghan, 42, in Nigeria.
During their visit, the couple will meet with service members and will take part in a variety of cultural activities.
The visit will highlight Harry's Invictus Games, which welcomed 500 athletes at last year's event in Germany, with 21 nations in attendance, including Nigeria. Nigeria, along with Colombia and Israel, were new entrants at the Invictus Games last year.
The Minister of Defense, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, who attended last year's event in Germany, has expressed willingness to host the games should Nigeria be granted the opportunity.

In a statement, Brig Gen Tukur Vusau, Acting Director of Defence Information in Nigeria, said: âThe visit is to consolidate Nigeria's strong hold at the game and the possibility of hosting the event in later years."
During last year's Invictus Games in DĂŒsseldorf, Germany, Meghan and Harry spent time with the Nigerian team, whom Harry said his wife was supporting during his opening speech .
"Now, I'm not saying we play favorites in our home, but since my wife discovered she's of Nigerian descent, it's likely to get a little bit more competitive this year," he joked.

In 2022, the Duchess of Sussex revealed on her podcast Archetypes that she had learned she was 43% Nigerian following a genealogy test.
Harry and Meghan posed for a photo with Team Nigeria and the national flag, and the squad presented them with a plaque from the Chief of Defense â plus a new nickname for Meghan.
The Duchess of Sussex received the name âAmira Ngozi Lolo,â which bears a royal meaning. Amira is the name of a warrior princess from a legend, while Ngozi means "blessed" and Lolo means "royal wife."

Duchess of Edinburgh Becomes First British Royal to Visit Ukraine Since Russiaâs Invasion
S ophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, became the first member of the British royal family to visit Ukraine since Russia launched its full scale invasion of the country in February 2022. Sophie is the wife of Prince Edward , the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth II , and brother of King Charles III .
The Duchess met Ukraineâs President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska during the Monday visit. She toured Bucha to âdemonstrate solidarity with the women, men, and children impacted by the war.â
While there, she laid down flowers at a memorial site in Bucha commemorating the over 400 people killed during the Russian occupation. Ukrainian authorities in April 2022 accused departing Russian forces of committing war crimes in a scene reminiscent of âa horror movie.â Zelenska also met with survivors of sexual violence and torture.

Sophie has been focused on championing the rights of survivors of conflict-related sexual violence for several years, announcing her commitment to the U.K.âs Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative in 2019. âWomen and girls pay the highest price in terms of human costs,â she said on Monday at an evening reception at the residence of the U.K.âs ambassador to Ukraine, per the BBC . âRape is used to demean, to degrade, and to destroy.â
The royal family, which is usually careful about staying neutral on most matters of politics, has been unusually outspoken about its support for Ukraine.
King Charles referred to Russiaâs invasion as a âunprovoked attackâ in a statement marking the second anniversary of the invasion this past February. âI continue to be greatly encouraged that the United Kingdom and our allies remain at the forefront of international efforts to support Ukraine at this time of such great suffering and need,â he said.
