Quechua Forclaz Trek 100 Jacket Review

Gear reviews

Quechua Forclaz

Field test and review

Puffer (or padded) jackets seem to be all the rage. Whether you are purchasing one for hiking or just daily wear, they are an item of clothing that will keep you warm on your outdoor adventures. Don’t be fooled into thinking that all puffer jackets are made equal, they come in varying styles, are made from different fabrics, some are water repellent, have different fill types ( down or synthetic ) and above all, have different thermal insulation properties.

Recently I was send a Quechua Forclaz Trek 100 Jacket from Decathlon to field test and review. It arrived towards the end of winter so what better time to test this jacket on the trail. I have worn this jacket during cold winter hikes (5 degrees C) as well as typical spring days (around 15 degrees C) and certainly have my preference for the type of weather I would wear this in. First, let’s talk about the features of this jacket.

Quechua Foreclaz Trek 100 Jacket

Design and Durability

The jacket is made from polyamide canvas (nylon) which has been sewn into a series of square cells to retain the internal wadding (filling). The fabric seems to resist light abrasion from the occasional scrape against rocks and bushes. Unlike most padded jackets, the Trek 100 comes with an integrated hood which I found really useful in blocking out the crisp winter wind and keeping my head warm while I hiked. The cuffs at the end of each sleeve have been elasticated to further aid in keeping your body warmth in. The waist band also has an elastic cord to perform the same function. When zipping the jacket closed, the inside zip flap prevents warm air from escaping and cool air from entering. A nice feature is the ability to pull the zip closed, right up past the collar and over my chin. Keeping warm air inside you jacket is one of the keys to successful insulation and this jacket seems to have all bases covered.

Quechua Foreclaz Trek 100 Jacket

Thermal Properties

Thermal insulation is one of the main reasons people invest in padded jackets. According to Decathlon’s website, this jacket has been certified for a comfort temperature of -6 during a standardised test in a thermal chamber. The jacket is not down but consists of a 100% polyester wadding (70% recycled) at 100g/sqm on the body and 80g/sqm on the sleeves and hood. This means the jacket is thin in design while still maintaining high insulation. While I didn’t test this jacket at -6 degrees, I did wear it on a few hikes that were in the range of +5-7 degrees and under these conditions I found the insulation to be adequate while moving. When stopping for breaks the jacket didn’t keep me as warm as I expected on these cool days so I would recommend wearing mid and/or base layers to aid in the insulation process.

Quechua Foreclaz Trek 100 Jacket

Pack Size and Weight

Given the thin qualities of the wadding, the Trek 100 Jacket weighs 370g (large size) and is highly compressible, packing down neatly into its left-hand pocket. This pocket has a double zip puller. All of the zips on this jacket come equipped with zip pullers which allow you to easily locate and manage the zip while wearing gloves. If you have bulky gloves you may find the zip pulls a little small so one suggestion for improvement would be to increase the length of them slightly.

Water Repellent

I never expect padded (puffer) jackets to be water proof and I recommend wearing a waterproof outer layer if you know rain is eminent. The Trek 100 Jacket has a surface-treated outer layer that prevents light showers from saturating the jacket. This is really useful if a light shower passes as you won’t have to stop to pull out your waterproof jacket. In my testing, light rain seemed to run-off the surface and not absorb into the wadding. It is important to note that the surface-treatment may deteriorate with use but can be reactivated.

Environmental Impact

With the environment being such a hot topic (as it rightfully should), I believe it is important to always look for hiking gear that lowers the impact on our environment. The use of synthetic wadding (versus down) in this jacket has an obvious impact on ducks and geese but this jacket takes things a step further. The following extract is straight from Decathlon’s website as I wont confess to being an expert in manufacturing techniques.

  • 100% polyester wadding (70% recycled)
  • The fabric we use reduces CO2 emissions by 40%. The fabric used is innovative because it mixes a self-dyed black thread and an undyed thread. Compared to conventional dyeing, this process makes it possible to reduce: fine particle emissions by 66% (PM2.5) eutrophication of fresh water by 74% eutrophication of marine water by 68%
  • On the Trek 100 black and blue models, the outer fabric uses a clean dying process known as dope dying (the thread is self-dyed), reducing CO2 emissions by 36%. More information can be found here .

I really enjoyed testing the Quechua Forclaz Trek 100 Jacket. For its weight, packable size and thermal insulation properties I am happy to recommend this jacket for every day wear as well as hiking during cooler days. It is a great spring jacket that will keep you warm and comfortable in temperatures above 10 degrees C.

Quechua Forclaz 100 Convertible Walking Trousers

rated 5.0 of 5 stars

Ultralight, breathable, quick drying, 'Technical' walking trousers with plenty of pockets and the convenience of zip-off legs. Previously known as "Trek 100 Men's Mountain Trekking zip-off Trousers".

  • Ultralight (350g in UK size 34" waist)
  • Very comfortable
  • Keep you cool in hot weather
  • Keep you warm in cold weather
  • Inexpensive
  • Stitching on bottom of back pocket flimsy on my pair. Had to repair it myself.
  • Loose fit at ankles means gaiters may be required on some trips.

I have been using zip-off leg trousers for my holidays, hiking, and camping for several years now and love the convenience of them. My last pair was a pair of North Face zip-offs with cargo pockets. However, I am now a fully-fledged ultralight hiking/camping gear enthusiast so when it came to reducing the weight of my clothing the North Faces simply had to go because they weigh 550g, which is a huge weight for a pair of walking/hiking trousers.

Then I discovered the  Quechua Forclaz 100 walking trousers, available in Decathlon stores. They look very similar in design to the North Face pair, but they only weigh 350g, yet have just as many pockets, even have the extra security of zips on some pockets, and even with the legs on they are still cool and comfortable in hot weather.

Unlike my previous North Face pair, they are not water proof, but as they are primarily designed for use in hot weather, with a very low chance of rainfall, this is to be expected.  They are made of very quick drying material though so even if it does rain, they won't stay damp for long when it stops. Of course, you could simply put on a pair of waterproof over trousers if you were that worried about it.

The material is light, wickable, comfortable against your skin and quick drying, yet it feels strong and robust and can be packed down into a very small space in your pack.

The  Quechua Forclaz 100's  cost under £25 too, making them a fraction of the cost of a pair of similar trousers from likes of the North Face, for example. I highly recommend these trousers for flying, walking, hiking, camping, general exploring, visiting friends or even going shopping... they really are that versatile!

Is Quechua Trek 100 the best hiking shoes for hiking in Sri Lanka ?

8 Months ago I bought the Quechua trek 100 trekking shoes from Decathlon. I wanted proper hiking shoes that keep my feet dry and ankles safe. There is a higher chance of me breaking my ankle because of my clumsiness. Luckily it hasn’t happened so far.

This article is about,

  • Review (Pros and Cons) on Trek 100
  • My Opinion on Trek 100 (Depending on Experience).
  • Activities that Trek 100 is Good for

Review & MY opinion

1. waterproof in extreme conditions, 2. it is made of breathable materials but it can eat you up on a sunny day., 3. 100km + and going strong, 4. it has a firm grip in most cases but fails on mossy rock surfaces, 5. extra protection from leeches & reptiles., 6. solid ankle guard, 7. it is lightweight for its kind. but it can be heavy if you plan to carry it, 8. great value for money.

  • 9. Bonus plus point: Good for Photographs! Seriously!

Verdict for Quechua trek 100

  •  Quechua Trek 100 is an ALL-ROUNDER

I want to say this article is not sponsored and I paid for the shoes before we get started.

I used Quechua Trek 100 shoes for 6 adventures ( add up to 100+ Kms). Now I have tested it well. I am going to say what I have to say.

Well, this is the best part. I have kept my feet dry everywhere I went while others drowning their feet in mud. It can be rainy conditions in Knuckles, Mist & Rain in Horton Plains or Extreme Caving at Nil Diya Pokuna. Quechua Trek 100 stands tall without any leaks.

It is safe to say that Quechua Trek 100 has a good waterproof mechanism. According to the Quechua  website , it can survive up to 16 km of walking in water up to the middle of the upper (continuously). So Quechua Trek 100 can survive Sri Lankan conditions unless if you walking on a water path for more than 16KM. Maybe a walk starting along the Mahaweli river.

The trek 100 gives a good protection from cold and enough breathability keep your feet without boiling up. It is perfect to wear in a rain forest like knuckles, Horton Plains.

However, if it is a typical sunny day in Sri Lanka, you are going to suffer a little. Because in tropical conditions your feet sweat more. It does keep sweat inside the shoe. So moisture can build up in a long hike. If you are walking 20Km+ then make sure that you take off your shoes once or twice to avoid the moisture build up.

I wore Quechua Trek 100 shoes for cave exploring, railway hike , Sri Pada via Kuruvita Road , Kirigalpoththa Summit and more. I have to say trek 100 doesn’t have a scratch on it. SUPER DUPER STRONG !.

The most important aspect of the shoe is the grip. Quechua Trek 100 has a proper grip. It keeps your foot sit inside the shoe comfortably. At the same time, it maintains a proper grip. I have tested this on all kind of surfaces except snow(well we don’t have snow in Sri Lanka as far as I know). Mud, Rocks, Grass, Water Paths It doesn’t matter. Online reviews confirm that it holds pretty well for snow as well.

However, the trek 100 loses its grip on extremely wet mossy rock surfaces . It was apparent when I was at knuckles. So If you are buying these shoes be mindful when using it on wet mossy surfaces.

It is safe to say that no reptile can bite you through the trek 100 because of extra layers of protection.

One of the major concerns while hiking in Sri Lanka or any other tropical country is leeches. Trek 100 provides a bulletproof solution for leeches if you coupled it with a pair of gaiters. I was able to keep my feet leech free during knuckles hike by using these shoes and self-made gaiters(I will do a DIY Article Soon, So Stay Tuned!).

I love the ankle guard because I am clumsy sometimes. My ankle goes sideways time to time. Trek 100 gives solid protection to ankles. It adds extra protection to protect you from reptiles and other animals.

This is a workhorse of hiking shoes. So it is meant to be heavy. A Pair of shoes weights around 1kg. So yes it is heavy if you plan to carry it.

1kg is the average for a lot of hiking shoes. So it is not that heavy. You have to remember that you are trading weight for safety, durability and other things mentioned in this article.

Let’s talk about money. The pair cost 13750 LKR in Sri Lanka. You can visit the product page here . A pair of Nike cost way more than this. These shoes provide a lot of features for hiking. I have to say that the Quechua equipment is of good quality even though they haven’t priced high as brands such as timberland and condor.

If you are a person who goes on hikes often I recommend this. Investing in proper hiking shoes can improve comfort, safety and health.

9. Bonus plus point: Good for Photographs ! Seriously!

Yes, You can take awesome photos with this pair. Just saying this is an additional perk.

+ Good Grip + Great Value for Money + Protection + Durability + Waterproof

– Lack of Breathability – Lack of grip in Mossy surfaces – Little bit Heavy to carry it separately

7.4/10  Quechua Trek 100 is an ALL-ROUNDER

I give this shoes 7.4/10. It provides enough features and functionality to use in Sri Lanka. It is an affordable pair and provides tons of functionality and support. You can purchase it from a Decathlon store as I did. They provide 2-year warranty for damaged product. I contacted Decathlon to inquire about the warranty. Their warranty does not cover user wear and tear damages. They provide warranty for product damages other wear and tear category.

Hey.. would the Quechua Trek 100 shoes be good for snow also as i am planning to go to Himachal in March ?

Hi Varun, I used this in Nepal for Annapurna Hike where I encountered the SNOW. This kept my feet dry. However if it gets wet or damped , that would be a problem. This is okay with snow, but if it is ice, you need crampons for sure.

Thanks for your review and taking the time to publish it. Contemplating buying a pair and your review was quite useful in my research.

I am glad to be a help. Happy Hiking

Trying to decide between these and the MH500. MH500 are softer and more cushion like, the Trek 100 are about 1cm taller and had tougher / stronger sole. The Trek 100 feels stronger overall, but aren’t as comfortable as the MH500 (at least in the store)..they feel harder. I ordered the MH500 but I can replace to the Trek 100 (Decathlon next to my house). Both are the exact same price ($96 USD). Change to Trek 100 or keep the MH500…? Confused. Going to Annapurna in a week. Help me decide please

Quite satisfied with this relatively light tent, easy to install, resistant to wind and heavy rain. However, from the fifth use, a pole broke during the night, perforating the tent fabric... it's a shame!

Motorcycle camping is easy to carry, and it is easy to set up the tent and store it away

Light tent for two people, good habitability and very solid in strong gusts of wind, it is super easy to live with for two years of moderate use

Absolutely love this tent. It isn't the ultralight kind but is very functional. If I had to change one thing about it, I would add the ability to separate the tent and the rainfly so I can see the stars when backpacking. Other than that, it protects my backpack and shoes, keeps the bugs out of my sleeping space. It is well made and is fully waterproof. I have backpacked with this in heavy rain and did not have an ounce of water seep into the tent.

The simple integrated structure is easy to assemble and can be set up and taken down quickly. I like the compact size and design. I used it in winter and was able to rest comfortably.

I bought a tent for a couple of days of SUP rafting. The advantages are the weight and dimensions after folding, as well as the ability to quickly set up the tent in the rain. Thanks to the design, you can unfold the flysheet and bedroom at once and there is no chance of water getting inside. The tent is quite narrow, two larger people will have a tight fit. For me, solo is perfect, I have enough space inside for myself and my luggage. Ventilation is also ok. The availability of spare parts is a plus.

Perfect for the treek!! light and practical, very satisfied with this purchase

I used it on three winter mountain trips. It was used on mountains with snow over 1,000 meters high and a snow wall was built to protect the tent from the wind. This tent is almost self-supporting, so it is not inconvenient to use even if you fasten two packs only at the entrance. Of course, it will be perfect if you use all 11 packs. I mainly used it alone and the tent's vestibule is a really great design. It provides a comfortable space to get in and out of the tent or to put on hiking boots because it is not inside the tent, and you can do everything inside the tent even if it is snowing or raining. The downside is that there seems to be more condensation on the inner tent than other tents I have used. My improvement would be to add an additional entrance to the back of the tent just in case. Also, I wish I could attach a photo to the review.

high quality

Unfortunately the color is too striking. But otherwise a great tent for 2 people. The pack size is just right for bikepacking. Fits on the front of the racing bike handlebars. Ventilation in summer could be a little better!

Purchased in 2020. At that time, it could be purchased for 10,000 yen + tax. Since I was in my 20s, I bought something as cheap as possible, but it turned out to be better than I expected. I've used it several times since then and haven't had any problems. What is noteworthy is that the inner and flysheet are integrated, which saves one step, making setup and removal extremely easy. The easier it is to set up, the more relaxing your time will be. It has no performance issues and is resistant to strong winds. A ground sheet is not included, so I purchased an earth-colored vinyl sheet from Homsen and used it. The downside is the lack of color variations. The Makuhari store has closed and I can't go see it! ! Encouraging comments with hopes for a comeback

There is a small space outside the tent to put shoes

This space is for organizing and storing your bivouac equipment. 2 pockets in the room, 1 hook on the top inside to hang a lamp.

Architecture, tent poles, and tent pegs

Lightweight shatterproof and frost-proof aluminum tent poles: 7001 Ø 8.5 mm.Tent pegs/stakes:Length 6.7”, Ø 6.1 mm.Non-anodized 7075 aluminum for maximum strength and lightness while lowering the environmental impact.Traditional dome shape to make the structure free-standing. A front tent pole with a peak provides additional volume and therefore a more habitable porch.

Pitching/striking

The Forclaz tents are tested fully pitched in the laboratory: 200 L/m²/h for 4 hours, i.e. equivalent to a tropical rain shower. They are also tested in the field by a sample user group.75-denier PES polyester flysheet and groundsheet, polyurethane coating on the inside, water-repellent treatment on the outside.Seams taped with heat-sealed strips.Multi-component and water-repellent 75D polyester bedroom that is breathable, provides protection from the wind, and reduces condensation.

Wind-resistance

We test all our tents in a wind tunnel on a turntable where we can expose each side of the tent to the wind.To test its wind-resistance, the tent must be properly pitched, taut but not stretched, with all the guy ropes in position around the tent. It should remain habitable at wind speeds of 37 mph, measured near ground level. Our tents are certified by the CSTB independent laboratory in Nantes.

Ventilation and condensation prevention

Bedroom with mosquito screen for ventilation and water-repellent fabric to protect from condensation and drafts. There is an air vent at the back of the tent.To reduce condensation inside the tent, it must be correctly assembled with a canvas that's taut, but not excessively so. The use of the air vent and good air circulation reduces moisture inside.

3-season tent: Your tent will protect you from the harsh weather conditions you can encounter in the spring, summer, or autumn. It will withstand light snowfall but is not designed to withstand heavy loads that would weigh on the structure. In case of snow, remember to shake your tent regularly in order to bring down any snow that has accumulated to avoid putting too much weight on the structure of your tent.

Eco-designed tent

We have decided to use ”biton” thread for this tent's bedroom fabric (1 out of every 2 threads is dyed to reduce the impact).Textile dyeing requires a lot of water but also produces waste water from the dye baths. To reduce this impact on the environment, we use only 1 mass-dyed yarn out of every 2 and thereby reduce our consumption and our impact on water.

Tent eco-design (continued)

The tent pegs are not anodized. We have stopped using nitric and phosphoric acids to fix the color because its only function is to make them look aesthetically pleasing.Your tent pegs can have an ”untreated” or ”used” appearance, but they retain all their technical characteristics and strength. The fabric of the room is bulk dyed, which reduces water consumption and CO² emissions. These actions help to reduce the environmental impact of your product.

Product testing

The waterproof rating of the Forclaz tents is validated by placing a pitched tent under 200 L/m²/h shower of water (tropical rain) for 4 hours, and checking that no water passes through the seams, flaps, openings, zippers, etc.The water column test (= mm Schmerber) measures the waterproof rating of the fabric. We test all our tents in a wind tunnel, on a rotating table to check all 4 sides. We also perform tests on the components (abrasion, tearing, perforation, etc.)

Storage instructions

After using or cleaning the tent, dry it thoroughly before storing to avoid bad odors and mold.

Not The Onion: Moscow Bans Gay Pride for Next 100 years

gay protest moscow.jpg

Human Rights First is already out with its condemnation :

Human Rights First condemns the Tverskoy District Court ruling to uphold the decision of Moscow authorities to ban gay pride parades in the city until May 2112. The Moscow City Hall has banned such events for seven consecutive years, citing numerous letters from public officials, religious organizations, and private citizens urging the authorities to prohibit a demonstration. The European Court of Human Rights pronounced these bans illegal in October 2010. (photo credit: Reuters) "This unprecedented ban is not entirely surprising, but Russia's society is evolving at a pace not even Vladimir Putin can control," said Human Rights First's Innokenty Grekov.  "More people are becoming accepting and tolerant to LGBTI persons. The 100-year ban, along with the discriminatory laws prohibiting "promotion of homosexuality" that are spreading through local legislatures, show that the Russian government remains behind the times."

Putin better go back and study up on the Hegelian dialectic.  It's hard to imagine a more animating event than a 100-year ban to throw at gays, their families and friends, and believers in democracy than such an absurd and comic ban.

I can see the G8 meeting protest rallies, the UN General Assembly events, the websites taunting Putin and his judges, and more.  The gay crowd will harrass and torment and undermine and prevail over those trying to repress them.  This ban is a gift.

This may become one of my favorite new causes as well.  Russia -- strategically important, a key member of the UN P-5, a country America must work with on challenges ranging from Iran to Syria to global oil and energy issues, with a steady and mostly sensible foreign minister -- is increasingly becoming a farce among nations, its seriousness dissolving with idiotic gestures like this gay ban.
