darke hall halloween

REGINA — Saskatchewan is no stranger to paranormal activity, as the most seasoned of ghost hunters know, and there’s plenty of opportunity to catch a glimpse of lingering spectres of the past right here in the Queen City.

Here’s a rundown of the most talked-about spooks in Regina, and just a warning: they’re not for the faint of heart.

government house gate halloween

Government House:

Possibly the most famous haunted hollow within city limits is one also best known as a popular tourism stop: Government House, the Victorian-style residence built in 1891 that served as the home and office for Saskatchewan’s Lieutenant Governor and family.

Now, the residence portion of the building is a heritage museum staged to mirror it's state in 1905 and, some say, home to what may be the city’s most well-known apparition, known colloquially as Howie.

Some believe that “Howie” is actually a man named Cheun Lee, a former cook who served Lieutenant Governor Archibald McNab, who held the office from 1936 until 1945. Cheun is supposedly the only person reported to have died in the house and, according to eyewitness accounts, he is believed to still remain present in the home he served during his life.

Government House employees say that Howie’s footsteps are often heard walking around the house, distinctive because of a pair of slippers Chuen was known to wear, and his figure sometimes appears in what used to be the home’s kitchen.

Howie also does his best to continue managing the house in his own way, including stubbornly relocating or rearranging items until staff leave them where he wants them to be.

But many also believe there’s more than one spirit lingering in the Victorian home.

Staff say that other unusual things often occur, like the sound of ghostly footsteps and music boxes playing when no one is around. Sometimes, artifacts like chairs will turn up in different rooms with no explanation. Doors open and close on their own.

Some claim that they’ve looked into mirrors in the home and seen mysterious faces reflected next to their own.

Other accounts say that unexplainable cold spots can be felt in the nursery wing of the residence, and the sounds of crying and laughing children echo with no apparent source.

assiniboia club halloween

The Assiniboia Club:

Located at 1925 Victoria Avenue is a beautiful three-story brick building, originally built in 1912 to house Regina’s most popular gentlemen's club: The Assiniboia Club, established in 1882 and closed in 2007.

Now, the building’s historic walls play host to Crave Kitchen & Bar — but only the lower floor. The upper floors remain closed to the public.

Back in it's 1900s glory, club rules said women were not allowed inside the building, although members were known to have often snuck prostitutes into the upper floor bedrooms to supplement their carousing.

According to local whispers, one of these women was rumoured to have been murdered with an axe in a private room on the third floor, at the behest of one of her clients.

Her spirit is said to still wander the halls of the former social club, appearing in windows and making terrifying noises.

Some say they have seen the figure of a beautiful woman beckoning to them, only to disappear when they get close. Others have witnessed disembodied voices, flickering lights and items moving on their own.

One employee of the building’s former business, Danbury’s Restaurant, said they once witnessed a set of foot-tall decorative vases hover in mid-air in the middle of the room, on their own.

University campus:

The University of Regina is another famous supernatural hotspot, placing it on the list of top haunted spots in the province.

In 1920, the Regina College, as the U of R was known as back then, was the site of a typhoid outbreak that closed campus down entirely, quarantining staff and students.

The girls residence was closed and converted to an infirmary, to treat the 78 people who fell ill. Eight students and one teacher perished.

It's said that apparitions of former nurses, doctors and patients from the deadly outbreak can still be seen walking the grounds.

There are also whispers of the ghost of a pilot, rumoured to have died after falling off a tower of a building during a party, held while the college was an air training centre in World War II. His figure has been spotted, always shadowed and in uniform, walking the halls and the area around the building where he is said to have perished.

Then, there’s Darke Hall.

Darke Hall is a 610-seat auditorium still located on campus, opened in 1929 thanks to an enormously generous donation by benefactor Francis Darke, best known as Regina's youngest mayor and for  his illustrious career as a real estate mogul and businessman.

Originally called the Darke Hall for Music and Art, it served as the city’s main music hall until the 1970s. The Regina Symphony called it home for more than four decades.

Darke was inordinately attached to his beloved venue, so much so that following his death in 1940, his funeral was actually held in the building.

And while Darke’s physical form was entombed in his family’s mausoleum, still located in the Regina Cemetery, many believe that his spirit stayed behind within the walls of Darke Hall.

Some people say they have seen a ghostly apparition of a man, dressed in early 20th century clothing, believed to be Darke, wandering the halls to continue checking in on a building he helped bring to fruition.

Performers and guests also say that just like in life, Darke continues to attend concerts and performances at Darke Hall, lingering in the audience — sometimes in his former seat, according to some — to enjoy the show. But he always disappears once the stage curtains close.

Darke Hall has been featured as a spooky story in the Haunted Canada book series, and in the popular show Creepy Canada — and doesn't that say plenty?

barts on broad halloween

Bart’s on Broad:

Although the former restaurant and nightclub itself is now closed, Bart’s on Broad has another fascinating supernatural story to tell.

Located in a century-old building at 1920 Broad Street, Bart’s once welcomed the presence of a benign spirit that few rarely saw, but many experienced his mischief.

Previous staff said they believed their ghostly guest, who they called “Buddy,” was likely the spirit of Kid Letowsky, a gunslinger who was shot and killed in a gunfight with famous outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in Butte, Montana, sometime during Cassidy’s reign of terror in the late 1890s or early 1900s.

But why would an outlaw’s ghost from Montana be in a Saskatchewan bar?

According to a story told by the bar’s previous owners, it's because the antique bartop at Bart’s was the same one from the saloon where Cassidy shot Letowsky almost a century ago — complete with the deadly bullet hole still gouged in its surface.

And the spirit of it's victim, still attached.

Letowsky reportedly teased staff and patrons in small, unharmful ways, like moving glasses when servers reached for them, hiding small objects like pens or keys and turning on the unplugged jukebox to play music.

He also was said to have liked sitting in the nightclub’s archway, an original feature of the building that was almost as old as Letowsky himself, and he once appeared fully to a bartender behind the bar to which his spirit is supposedly tethered.

Honourable Mentions:

If your supernatural cravings still aren’t satisfied after all that, here’s a few more ghostly gotta-see’s in Regina to check into:

Regina General Hospital: Reports of several spirits still lingering in the halls of this hospital, first built in 1909, are plenty — including the apparition of an older nurse rushing around with inhuman speed and disappearing figures of patients wandering the halls.

Casino Regina: The location where the casino now resides, previously home to the city’s train station, is definitely a must-go to experience paranormal activity, including sightings of train station employees, a ghostly unknown woman seen in the upper levels of the casino, first captured in a photo of an empty room in the 1930s, and in the basement, a previous prisoner who still haunts the jail cell he died in to escape trial.

Saskatchewan Science Centre: Plenty of sightings of unusual spectres have taken place in this popular family destination, including reports of a disembodied man’s voice yelling for help, a little boy in a conductor’s hat who joins school tour groups but vanishes when approached, and a malevolent female spirit who doesn’t like men and follows them around the building.

The McKillop Residence: This century-old home located at 1800 College Avenue has an incredible list of paranormal sightings and experiences with more than one spectres — including a woman in a wedding dress hovering outside a second story window. The creepiest part: no records yet discovered confirm that anyone has ever died on the property.

Bushwakker Brewpub: According to stories, original building manager James Strathdee angrily haunts the pub after supposedly shooting himself with a shotgun across the street in the 1930s — although some theories speculate that it wasn't Strathdee who fired the gun that took his life.

Centennial Market: A local Regina medium says that the former Sears outlet building, first built in 1918 by Eaton's Company and now home to the Centennial Market, has 13 regularly appearing spectres and up to 100 ghosts total within its walls. She offers monthly tours of the empty second floor, for those hoping to catch a glimpse.

Ghost Tours of Regina Provide Haunted History: Bill’s Right On Blog

A number of years ago I attended The Ghost Tours of Regina and I must say I really enjoyed the night! The bus tour participants met at Bushwhacker’s Pub on Dewdney Avenue at 7pm, where we met our tour guide for the night, Josh Straight (who played Josh the Cook on the CTV show ‘Corner Gas’).

After a short introduction and an explanation of the buses safety features we started the tour! The first stop was the Regina cemetery where we had to don glow sticks to light our way and were asked to put on face masks we were given (the kind doctors wear). The reason we were told was to create a connection between the generation that died from the Spanish influenza and how they may have felt from seeing only the doctors and nurses coming in wearing these during what may have been their final days.

Our guide also talked about the history of Regina and how it interacted with the cemetery from the tornado of 1904 to the Spanish influenza and the Chinese immigrants. He didn’t say anything much that haunted the cemetery but just wanted to point out that all of the history of Regina can be told like a story from the tomb stones that populate the yard.

THE GOVERNMENT HOUSE GHOSTS

The Government House Ghosts

The Government House interior is known to be quite the haunted place

After this brief stop we continued to The Government House where Josh spoke of Chung Lee, a Chinese immigrant, who was a cook that lived and worked there. His routine was the same thing each day and every day with pretty good consistency. After he died many people could swear that they still hear the flip flops he used to wear walking up and down the stairs and halls. Josh also spoke of a purple cloth that was used to cover an honorary sword in a glass case, this cloth was always found flung across the room every morning for eight weeks. It wasn’t until after they moved the cloth somewhere else did it stop being flung around. Some people have guessed that Chung lee wanted the sword uncovered.

The second story they mentioned in The Government House was a small ivory statue that would always get turned around, either after some piece of furniture was mysteriously moved around or in one case after a lady fell down the stairs. This small statue would for some reason and somehow be turned around to face the wall even though no one had touched it. The interesting thing about the lady falling down the stairs is she swears that the statue was facing its normal direction as she came down the stairs but when she looked back up at it – it had turned its back to her.

Also at the government house there were a few stories of new employees coming in and hearing kids playing or boots chasing the kids but no one being around at all. A final interesting note is that the water is cut off to the museum part, but people have heard the toilet flush and the bathtub being full of water. On a personal note I must say that I felt anger there after I took a picture of the small statue, it was like something suddenly wanted to hurt me.

THE COLLEGE BUILDING – STORIES OF SUICIDES AND BAD MILK

The College Building has a scary history known to haunt the present

The College Building has a scary history known to haunt the present

From there we went on to the College Building on College Avenue where we were told of how the building was divinely protected three times. The first time when there was a great Regina fire coming towards it but it suddenly veered off to the right of the building leaving it unscathed, secondly during the tornado two weeks before its official opening, again the tornado also veered away at the last moment, and finally during the Spanish influenza outbreak – not one case of influenza was reported on campus. Amazing stories but it was not to last.

After that in the 1920’s the divine protection seemed to end. A farmer sold a vat of milk that his worker infected with typhoid fever (the worker didn’t tell his boss he was sick and handled the milking process spreading the germs) and many of the students got sick. During this time it was a lady or student that passed on but they didn’t leave. This lady could be seen from time to time just walking the halls trying to be alone, she is mostly seen near the ‘Dark Hall’. Anyway, if you approach her she moves away and if she turns to look at you her eyes glow red and you are overcome with fear we were told.

The second story of College Campus involves a soldier who died there during WWII, just a couple of months before the war ended – he decided to commit suicide by jumping out a window of the top floor. One lady student seen him in the library as she was studying, when she chased him down he simply turned and said thank you then disappeared. It is thought that maybe he just wanted some sort of acknowledgement of being there. The Creepiest thing that happened to us at the College was how the front tower window was suddenly opened. Creepy, because we were told no one is allowed in that area. Creepy, because only the Dean of the College has Keys. Creepy, because this Dean was already gone home for the night…Creepy!

THE COMPUTER CLINIC’S STONE HOUSE – A DEAD WIVES TALE?

The Computer Clinic has long been known to be haunted (photo: http://myreginacity.net/)

The Computer Clinic has long been known to be haunted (photo: http://myreginacity.net/)

The current store, now called The Computer Clinic, located in the stone house on College Avenue and Broad Steet used to be a coffee house called “Mulligan’s” and before that, housed a few other businesses – all of which had trouble staying open because of ghost hauntings. I guess the house itself was built by a German man who wanted his wife to come to live in Regina with him, but only she didn’t want to come here. So he promised to build her a beautiful stone dream home so they could settle down and have a normal life. Well, they got married and lived briefly in the house before he had to go do some work in a northern part of the province but as it turned out she died before he could return and now her spirit simply haunts the place.

HOTEL SASKATCHEWAN OR HAUNTED HOTEL SASKATCHEWAN?

HAUNTED HOTEL SASKATCHEWAN?

Hotel Saskatchewan looked much scarier back in the day

After that we drove past the Hotel Saskatchewan where we heard stories of how employees refuse to work on the 5th and the 8th floor because of the apparitions that appear on those floors and high number of suicides that have happened there. There were stories also of service carts being turned over, and of while washing mirrors and suddenly seeing a woman is behind you in the reflection, a creepy cold touch on your shoulder or back. Truly a haunted hotel…

BART’S ON BROAD – BULLET HOLES OF BUTCH CASSIDY

The last place we drove by was the former Bart’s on Broad Bar; this bar has an arch in the door were shipped here from somewhere in the states and somewhere on it there is a bullet hole in it from when Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid shot someone. Now that spirit (his name is Buddy) sits around the bar and around the arch and is waiting to get revenge on the two gunslingers. You would think that after being moved and set up somewhere else would be enough to convince the spirit it’s in the totally wrong place?

Overall, I think the weirdest thing for me was in the Government House I was using my cell phone camera light to look in some of the darker rooms when suddenly the light turned off. The way I have my camera phone set up, the light should always be on and should never shut off unless I turn off the camera – but even then if I turn on the camera again the light automatically comes back on. In order to turn off the light there is a three step three button process that is almost impossible to accidentally happen. Now, when I noticed the light was turned off I closed the phone, opened it again and reset the camera thinking it would just light right up again. It didn’t. I had to go through all the steps to turn it back on manually, weird.

I totally look forward to going again next year and seeing any new places they may add and hearing many of the stories over as there were many told. Scare yourself with a Regina ghost tour

Brad Zakreski has lived in Regina since he was 10 years old. A co-owner of the Storm Group of Companies, Zakreski moonlights as a ghost tour guide with Storm’s Eco-Party Tours. This year’s Dining and Death tour (offered until Oct. 29) guarantees a full stomach — there’s food at each of the four locations — and a good chance of experiencing a haunting. “You’re going to probably go home with your very own ghost story,” said Zakreski, who knows of about 30 Regina ghost stories. Q: What can people expect on a ghost tour?A: My tour’s all about the reality and the realism. We don’t do Hollywood, guts, gore, this kind of stuff. If you want that, go watch a movie. This is the opportunity to experience something you can’t necessarily see but you can feel and there’s a lot of other evidence that surrounds it. We like to provide a real experience (with the help of psychic Robyn Carissa). Nothing’s fabricated, nothing jumps out of the closet or anything like this. If you come you’re going to get up close and personal with the spirit world.Q: Do you believe in ghosts?A: Absolutely. Beyond a shadow of a doubt there’s the stories, and the references and testimonials that people have, there’s the photographic evidence, and now there’s the whole quantum and science theory that’s coming into play ... So it’s kind of hard to refute that there’s something else going on out there.Q: Have you always believed in ghosts?A: When I was growing up, I was a skeptic. It’s a bunch of hooey, it’s garbage, it’s not real. And then I was 21 and it was Christmas, and my grandfather got a book called Ghost Stories of Saskatchewan as a gift, and one of the ghost stories is right near where they live. So my aunt, who’s big into this kind of thing, said ‘we should go check it out.’ The six of us load up and we go off to find the St. Louis ghost train. We found it. Ever since then I’m definitely a believer because we experienced the ghost train ... Some of the film is distorted and at one point until the apparition got used to us, every time we’d pull out the camera, it would disappear. ... I’ve been out there during the day since then with my psychic, and you hear train noises like it’s a train yard, there’s stuff crashing and banging, a train going down the tracks, but the tracks aren’t even there anymore.Q: What kind of experiences have you had on the ghost tours?A: We bring cameras along, and we have captured some pretty wild stuff with our cameras. I’ve got an outline of a woman from the turn of the century. Lots of orbs, some wild colouring in some of the pictures, and then there’s always people who feel things, hear things. One location you can actually feel the intoxication of the haunting, because they were heavily intoxicated before they committed suicide, some people get really overtaken by that.Q: What’s a lesser-known Regina ghost story?A: In Wascana Park, at the Willow Island overlook, there are two apparitions that hang around there. ... (A man) jumped off the overlook, got stuck in the muck of the lake up to their waist and drowned. If you go and hang out in the summertime, when the geese are swimming by, they’ll kind of congregate and hang out, especially if you feed them. But in one particular spot ... the geese will start to go a little bit squawky, they just start honking and flapping, almost like they’re fighting for space with something. It’s believed that that’s the spot where he was stuck. If you have a strong enough sense of smell you can actually differentiate that there’s the lake, naturally, but there’s a second sort of rotting smell that presents itself. The other thing that’s there is across the water there’s a little girl who likes to sit on the dock at Willow Island, and many times the boat operators for the Wasca see the little girl, drive back to go get the last passenger off the island, go to the island, nobody there ...Email [email protected] with your ghost stories.

A look at ‘haunted’ spots in Regina leading to Halloween

A look at 'haunted' spots in Regina leading to Halloween

Wascana Park on a foggy, cloudy night. (Dom Lucyk/980 CJME)

Halloween is quickly approaching.

While many of us celebrate by watching horror movies or dressing up in spooky costumes, there are those who would rather try to find real-life horrors.

A poll from Ipsos this year shows that almost half of all Canadians believe in ghosts.

So, are there any spirits wandering the land of the living here in Saskatchewan?

That’s a question 980 CJME set out to try and answer.

We spent a foggy, cloudy night in Wascana Park with Kenton de Jong. He’s a local paranormal enthusiast who has made it one of his life goals to see a ghost.

“My hobby, my passion, is travelling the world and seeing scary places. I’ve never seen a ghost, but I’ve seen some messed-up places. I’m sure, if there were spirits, they were there,” he said.

One of the spookiest he has seen is Chernobyl, the site of the 1986 nuclear disaster in Ukraine.

While it may seem like that would make Regina pale in comparison, he’s confident that there are plenty of haunted spots, especially in the city’s biggest park.

regina haunted tours

Darke Hall, the allegedly haunted building on College Avenue. (Dom Lucyk/980 CJME)

Among them is Darke Hall. It’s a part of the College Avenue campus of the University of Regina.

It seems to be a fitting name for a haunted location, but it was named after Francis Darke, the 11th mayor of the city who served in 1898.

“It is said that Darke Hall is haunted by Francis Darke. It’s said that he’s been seen walking around the hallways, behind the stage, up and down the stairwells, all over the building. He’s also been seen downtown, in some of the hotels he used to own,” de Jong said.

However, de Jong doesn’t think Darke is a malicious ghost, the type who would curse someone.

That could be a different story for some apparent phantoms a bit closer to the lake.

There’s a parking lot, not far from the intersection of Broad Street and Broadway Avenue.

According to de Jong, it’s built where there used to be an insane asylum.

He said criminals were executed there, and their decomposed bodies are still buried underneath the soil.

He shared one story that has led to some paranormal speculation.

Many decades ago, an Italian musician and his friend were travelling through the country. They were both accused of murder.

One was hung in Regina, where that parking lot is now.

“He was executed here, his final words being ‘I am innocent.’ … His friend was sentenced to life in a penitentiary in Manitoba, but he got let out a year later because his charges were revoked,” de Jong said.

He said that would be as good of a reason as any to haunt the place, if the man did indeed become a ghost.

Just a few steps away, there’s a large concrete structure with stairs leading down to a small dock.

“This is one of the spots that is definitely on people’s radar as one of the most haunted spots in the city,” de Jong continued.

While he doesn’t know her name, age, or when it happened, he said that there are tales of a little girl falling off the dock and drowning.

“It’s said she often haunts this dock. You can see her either in the water, looking at you or walking around the stairs,” he said.

Despite checking out these and a few other supposedly haunted spots, not a single ghost showed themselves that night.

De Jong doesn’t want to give a definitive answer on the origin of paranormal sightings and stories. After all, he has never seen a ghost himself.

However, even if there’s not a single spirit stalking the streets of Saskatchewan’s cities, de Jong thinks there’s a lot of value in learning some of these stories.

“All sorts of things happened here over the past century and a half that people just don’t talk about,” he said. “So I think if they learned it, they would realize that Regina has a lot more to offer than just what you would see in the daytime.”

7 Allegedly Haunted Spots You Can Explore In Regina

7 Allegedly Haunted Spots You Can Explore In Regina

We're sure you've heard at one point or another that the past can come back to haunt you. Whether you believe that it's true or not, the feeling of the unknown can still bring an eerie feeling that sends shivers up and down your body. Especially, when the stories of hauntings, past lives, and ghosts are involved. We're talking about the kind of stories that keeps you up late at night... when the world is dark and everything just seems a little sinister.

However, if you're the kind of person that loves the adrenaline rush of a scare, then I've got a few places that just might have a ghost or two lurking around waiting for you. Regina has a rich history of people who once lived before our time and rumor has it they have never really left at all.

For all our wannabe ghostbusters, here are 7 allegedly haunted places in Regina you can explore.

See on Instagram

Built in the late 1920s, Darke Hall has become a historical relic for the performing arts. Today, it's still a go-to place to watch a musical performance but rumor has it that the ghost of Francis Darke, the building's namesake likes to sneak into concerts, take a seat, and vanish when the show is over.

Casino Regina

Formerly known as Union Station in early 1900's, Casino Regina is chalked full of stories from the past. To this day, there hangs a mysterious photo with of an empty room where you can faintly see a ghost-like image of a woman. It's been said that she still lingers above the gaming floor while another ghost buddy of hers hangs out in the basement where the jail cells used to be.

Government House

Government House is another charming piece of Saskatchewan history. It's used to be the Lieutenant Governor's bachelor pad and has now become a hot spot for tourists and a ghost named Howie. Howie likes to scare the shit out of people by tampering with the lights, opening doors, and making all kinds of eerie sounds.

Crave Kitchen & Bar

Back in the day, Crave used to be an old boys club for elite businessmen and they would get up to some preeetty shady things. The story is that a prostitute was murdered in one of the rooms upstairs and today her ghost haunts the building by lurking around the hallways making bone-chilling noises.

Bushwakker Brewpub

The building where Bushwakker Brewpub exists today is home to some unusual happenings. During the 1930s, there was a man named James Strathdee who initially constructed the building. He later suffered from depression and ended up committing suicide. People have experienced his not so friendly ghost having a temper tantrum and doing things like throwing things across the room and actually pushing people.

SIAST Wascana Campus

If you didn't already know, this used to be a hospital. That pretty much says it all. During the day, it's busy enough that there's not much for suspicious activity going on but if you're studying there late at night there's a good chance you might experience something rather unusual if you're brave enough to wander through the halls.

The Science Center

The Science Center may be known as a family fun zone but there's also been some unusual activity that doesn't make it feel so family friendly. There have been experiences of a boy in a conductor's hat that joins in on classes with other children but then disappears when he is approached. Cue: a moment of panic about the ghosts of children.

Halloween is right around the corner, and if you’re looking for something spooky to do, Regina has more than a handful of displays and haunted houses to check out.

Here is a map of some Halloween haunts in Regina, courtesy of Saskatchewan Haunt Finder.

The map is sorted by icons, including yard haunts, walk-through haunts, a combination of the two, a commercial haunt, a haunted cemetery, and a walk-through with scares.

Some of the haunts are only available to walk through on Halloween night and some are available in the days leading up to the spooky occasion.

The Allen Family Lights are back for another year in the north end, with a light show synchronized to Halloween music.

All corners of the city have plenty of options, from family-friendly displays to haunted houses for the brave only.

About Regina Spektor

Regina Spektor calls them sandcastles. There’s a million of them, songs that rise up and multiply in her brain — the fruits of months, sometimes years, of channeling and crafting. But what happens to them when it’s time to make new music? “They all have to be slowly washed away. Some of them are really well built, and they’re really high up on the beach,” she says. “It all has to be gone, and then I can start to hear new songs and make a new record.”

Starting with a clean slate, with six momentous years between albums, Spektor returned in 2022 with Home, before and after. The eagerly awaited eighth studio album was the follow-up to 2016’s Remember Us to Life. It paired Spektor with John Congleton (St. Vincent, Sharon Van Etten, Angel Olsen), who produced the album from afar in Los Angeles with Spektor co-producing in upstate New York.

The years between her albums weren’t exactly fallow. In 2016, at her friend Lin-Manuel Miranda’s invitation, she contributed a song (“Dear Theodosia,” featuring Ben Folds) to The Hamilton Mixtape. Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared Regina Spektor Day in her hometown in June 2019, she got a street sign with her name at the Bronx Walk of Fame, and that same month staged a sold out residency on Broadway at the legendary Lunt- Fontanne Theatre.

Her work for television and film continued. “You’ve Got Time,” from Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, entered the pantheon of classic TV theme songs, so much so that Spektor released an orchestral version of the award-winning tune for the final episode. She wrote “One Little Soldier” for the closing credits of the film Bombshell and multiple songs for the animated series Central Park.

Time has been kind to Spektor’s work. Twenty years have passed since she self-released her 2001 debut, 11:11, which recently received a remastered reissue, as well as a limited-edition box set. In the decades since, Spektor, who was born in Moscow, Russia and raised in the Bronx, New York, has defied classification. With a sophisticated marriage of classical training and a gift for sharp pop hooks and nuanced lyrics, she has created her own genre. She makes Regina Spektor music.
