Kansas City sits on the border between Missouri and Kansas, and has flown under the radar for a while. It is one of the most underrated cities in America. It’s one of those spots that will take you by surprise, offering a lot of local culture, a fascinating art scene, and world-class experiences for a fraction of the price you would pay in other US cities.

Just like any city, it’s to break away from the hustle and bustle and explore a bit of the surrounding areas. Taking a day trip from Kansas City is a great way to experience ranch lands and lesser-known Midwestern regions.

Getting Around Kansas City, and Beyond

Staying in Kansas City is not something the average US visitor does. With a vast history and a thriving Jazz music scene, its worth a visit.

The city has a relatively small city center, making it easy to walk around once you’re in the heart of downtown. Exploring neighborhoods on foot is pretty common. Crossroads Arts District, Power & Light District, Garment District, and River Market are all pedestrian friendly. That being said, the city is a car-dominated location.

Renting a car is the most popular way to get around and take some Kansas City day trips. All the usual car rental companies can be found, with the largest branches located at the Kansas City International Airport and near the Amtrak Union Station. Parking is typically free and easy to find, which is almost unheard of in other cities.

Kansas City also has an extensive public transportation network. The local buses are called RideKC and are reliable, on time, and operate extensive routes around downtown. A one-way fare will cost you about $1.50 and can be purchased using cash on the bus. Alternatively, you could buy a $3-day pass for unlimited rides or purchase a MetroCard that you can top up as you go.

One of the best ways to get around downtown and the city center is on the Kansas City Streetcar. It is totally free to use and runs from the Crown Center to the River Market District. It makes 16 stops over the two miles, operating from 6am to 12am, with limited hours on weekends.

Here are some of my favorite half-day trips to take from Kansas City. From horse riding adventures on local ranches, to visiting small historical towns and everything in between, there’s something for everyone.

Holden, MO

Holden is a small town about fifty miles from Kansas City, and is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing day trip away from the city. There are no regular bus routes from Kansas City to Holden, so your best bet would be to rent a car and make the hour journey on your own steam. 

The old town, that was built in 1857 to house Pacific Railroad builders, has a super small-town vibe and charming atmosphere. It’s one of those places where all the locals know each other personally.

To get your trip started, head over to the main street where you’ll find a bunch of cozy eateries, local products, and boutique shops.

If you’re looking for some fresh air and sunshine, Holden City Park and Holden Downtown Park are great places to go for a low-key picnic with your family. Feel free to pick up some fresh produce in town before settling at the park for a slow afternoon.

There’s also a 380-acre lake in Holden, which really is a beautiful spot to explore on a sunny day. You’ll find anglers and picnicking families dotted around the lake on weekends.

LaCygne, KS

LaCygne is a small city in Linn County, about an hour south of Kansas City. Its odd name comes from the river that runs through the town, known as the Marais des Cygnes River. Although it’s classified as a city, LaCygne is really a small town with one main street. Only about 1000 people live there!

Why is it worth a half-day trip, you ask? Well, LaCygne lies in one of the most beautiful valleys in the area, making it the perfect spot for hiking, walking, and camping. Not only is the city built on the banks of a river, but it’s also home to a lake, which is a popular place to fish, do outdoor exercise, picnic, and just get a bit of fresh air.

I would highly recommend taking a stroll through the historic downtown. The buildings on the main street were built in the early 1800s and look like a classic western film set – ideal for a photo opportunity! The LaCygne Historical Society is open on weekend afternoons, and the tour guides will be happy to tell you a bit more about the history of their hometown.

Lawrence, KS 

Lawrence is a small city just east of Kansas City that has been labeled as one of the most vibrant centers for shopping, dining, and entertainment in the Midwest. If you drive yourself, it will only take you about 45 minutes.

But it wasn’t always a hotspot for food and culture. In fact, this town was the location of a heartbreaking Civil War event. You can learn more about this battle through the carefully curated exhibits at the Watkins Museum of History and the Wakarusa River Valley Heritage Museum.

Massachusetts Street (locally known as ‘Mass’), has even been called one of the most beautiful main streets in the USA. Take a stroll down this wide main street which is lined with lush trees and period buildings to get a real taste of the city. Of course, you’ll be able to pick and choose from some of the city’s best eateries along this road.

Just a quick hour’s drive from Kansas City, you’ll find the Kansas State Capital of Topeka. Although this city is much smaller than Kansas City, it’s jam-packed with interesting things to see and do.

I think Topeka is a great destination for a weekend away from the city, but it’s also easily done in a day trip. It is even connected with Kansas City via railway.

One of the most popular things to do is to tour the State Capitol, which is a historic collection of buildings with a wealth of history. If art and culture are more your speed, the Mulvane Art Museum is definitely worth a visit. It is home to some incredible local and international artworks. The Children’s Discovery Center is a crowd favorite that has interactive exhibits perfect for young kids.

Once you’ve got a good dose of culture and history, head to the banks of Lake Shawnee for some fresh air. There are loads of picnic spots and walking trails open to the public. In fact, over a million people visit this gorgeous lake each year to play golf, ball games, fish, and camp.

There are a ton of things to do in Kansas City , but it’s always fun to travel outside and see more of what the region has to offer. These full day trips in Kansas City are perfect for getting out and exploring.

The Missouri River, MO

The Missouri River runs directly through Kansas City. As a matter of fact, it’s the longest river in the States, running all the way from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River 2341 miles away. Aside from having a super fascinating archeological history and supporting generations of indigenous populations, the river is one of the most beautiful places to visit for a day trip in Kansas City.

Of course, you could simply visit the section of the river that runs through the city. But your best bet would be to venture out to a less populated area and explore the more rural parts of the Missouri River.

Some of the most popular riverside activities include bird watching, boating, camping, canoeing and kayaking, hiking, and mountain biking.

Lake Jacomo, MO 

Lake Jacomo is a great place to spend a day if you don’t feel like heading too far out of the city. It’s only a 25-minute drive from downtown. The beautiful lake spans 970 acres, and sits in the heart of Fleming Park.

For boat lovers and sailors, this is the place to be in Missouri! There is a limit on the amount of horsepower you can use on a boat, which makes Lake Jacomo one of the more peaceful lakes to visit. 

If you’re more interested in history than boating, visit the Missouri Town 1855 for a ‘step back in time’ experience. This whole town is basically a living museum, with over 25 different buildings housing historical tools and furniture set exactly how it used to be in the mid-1800s. 

Base yourself around Lake Jacomo for a more quiet Kansas City experience, which is only a short drive from the city center. Why not rent this artsy home for the best of both worlds.

How about spending a day exploring one of Kansas’s most historic cities? Ottawa is just a short hours drive away, and is a top spot for a day trip from Kansas City. Founded in the 1800s, it has a rich past rooted in Civil War and Native American history.

The best way to explore the city is on foot, admiring the exquisite 19th and 20th-century architecture along the main street of the town. Not only is downtown the perfect setting for a picturesque stroll, but it’s where you’ll find some great boutique shops and restaurants.

If you prefer a bit more structure, there are some great museums that can kick start your adventures. I recommend starting at the Old Depot Museum which visually recreates moments in history from over a century ago. You’ll be able to see what an old school, dentist’s office, and general store looked like when the city was first founded.

Stockton, MO

Right in the heart of Missouri’s Cedar County, Stockton is a small city that is home to the Stockton State Park. The area is only a two hour drive south, a super easy getaway.

Stockton Lake, located in the park, is a bunch of bodies of water that make up a vast lake. It’s a local favorite for sailing enthusiasts and kayakers, and is also known for being one of the most beautiful areas for hiking and rock climbing in the area.

There’s a marina and a beach, which are the perfect spots to relax and grab a local meal on your day trip from Kansas City.

Powell Gardens, MO

Powell Gardens are located just forty five minutes east of Kansas City. I love this spot – you’ve gotta spend a full day exploring the gardens and lounging around in the sun.

The gardens are beautifully designed with eight themed display gardens, different exhibitions, and attractive architecture. If you want to get your steps in, there’s a three-mile nature trail that runs through the 175 acres worth of garden.

After your walk you can dig into some delicious local food at one of the park restaurants, which are prepared using homegrown ingredients from the garden.

The gardens are typically open from 9am to 5pm, and charge an admission fee of $10 for one adult and $4 for kids.

You could choose to stay near the gardens in this charming cottage , which is only a short drive back into the city center.

Saint Joseph, MO 

St. Joseph is a city with a unique history located just 50 miles north of Kansas City. It’s most well known for being the home of train and bank robber, outlaw, and infamous guerilla Jesse James.

It’s a relatively large city that sees over 70 passenger trains run through it daily on its eleven railroads. No wonder Jesse James got into the train robbing industry!

The town was established in the early 18th century as a popular trading post. But it wasn’t until the California gold rush that St. Joseph grew to be what it is today.

Naturally, the city is packed with historical buildings and unique sites. The Patee House Museum is a beautiful old building that was made famous for being the headquarters for the infamous Pony Express. There are tons of old cars, trains, carousels, and other western artifacts to see. 

If you want to see some of the beautiful period homes, head to the Museum Hill Historic District. You could even spend a night here, and stay in a historic vineyard mansion carriage house .

Kansas City can keep you busy for a good week. But, it’s getting out of the city and having some day trips from Kansas City that will be the best bits of your stay. 

My favorite trip from this list would have to be a day in Powell Gardens. It’s not too far from the city and is a beautiful spot for both a relaxing, or an adventurous trip. 15 Best Day Trips from Kansas City

Kansas City , spanning the border between Missouri and Kansas, is home to a hotchpotch of cultural activity owing to its deep-rooted jazz tradition, as well as having some fantastic barbecue-based cuisine and many excellent craft breweries.

The city sits at the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas rivers, and was established as a city in March 1853. Its fountains are also a well-known attraction, with many popping up all over the city.

As with most major cities, it’s also got the usual suspects for entertainment: art galleries, museums, restaurants and bars – and of course, it also has some excellent day trip options for visitors.

Here are the best day trips from Kansas City :

1. Powell gardens

Spanning for 915 acres and less than 45 minutes away from Kansas City’s downtown, Powell Gardens provide a splendid natural attraction for a day trip.

This botanical garden has many different sections to be explored, from the indoor conservatory, to the Rock and Waterfall garden, to the gorgeous surrounding hills and meadows.

The visitor education centre should also not be missed, not least because of its thoughtfully designed architecture, which is meant to blend in with the nature that surrounds it.

2. Lake Jacomo

The freshwater Lake Jacomo stretches for 970 acres and is located in Jackson County, where it is one of Parks and Recreation’s most popular attractions.

Interestingly, its name is a portmanteau of Jackson County, MO, utilising the first letter of each word.

The lake offers loads of water-based activities, including wind surfing, sailing, and various types of boating and fishing.

The fish available for catching include carp, striped bass, bluegill and crappie.

Popular Lake Jacomo events are its sailboat regattas, during which visitors get to watch a stream of colourful boats set out across the water.

Around 30 minutes from downtown Kansas lies Weston, which provides a plethora of entertainment options for a day trip.

Green Dirt Farm is perhaps the most popular of these.

A small local business, Green Dirt Farm offers high quality products such as grass-fed lamb and sheep’s milk cheese, as well as Farm Table Dinners, which offer four courses of locally produced food.

Farm Table Dinners are intended to educate visitors about the link between our food and where it comes from.

After your farm visit, you might want to go and check out the local brewery or winery, for a drink to wash down your dinner.

4. Somerset Wine Trail

The Somerset Wine trail is composed of four award winning wineries: Somerset Ridge, White Wind Farm, Middle Creek and Night Hawk.

This region is arguably one of the fastest growing in terms of wine production in the US, and with good reason – all these wineries produce their own grapes and make their wines on-site.

Somerset Ridge is the oldest and largest winery in the area, and boasts over 20 acres and 20 wines to suit all tastes: dry, sweet and sparkling.

The Somerset Trail is an excellent place to learn about the process of wine making, tour a vineyard, and certainly sample a few of their best bottles.

5. Excelsior Springs

Conveniently located close by to downtown Kansas City is Excelsior Springs, a compact community that plays host to the spectacular Elms Hotel and Spa.

The building where the spa is located dates back to 1888, and the spa has had plenty of famous customers in its time, including Harry S. Truman and Al Capone.

There are heaps of wellness options available, from facials to massages, and hydrotherapy to pedicures.

There’s also a salon on-site.

It’s the perfect option if you want a relaxing day away from city life.

6. Independence, MO

Noted for being the long-time home of the 33rd president of the United States, Harry S. Truman, Independence is a very popular spot among visitors to Kansas City.

Another famous former resident was the actress Ginger Rogers.

In Independence you can tour the president’s former home, as well as the presidential library, where you’ll learn about his fascinating and influential life.

Aside from presidential attractions, Independence also has a gorgeous gothic mansion, plenty of local shops, and excellent options to stop at for lunch or dinner.

7. Missouri Town 1855

Just east of Independence sits the fascinating Missouri Town 1855, where a litany of actors recreate times gone by.

This living history museum features a whole host of scenes for your viewing pleasure, from 1850s houses, to a working blacksmith shop, to a mercantile.

The site sprawls across more than 30 acres and 25 buildings, many of which contain original furnishings and equipment.

8. Prairiefire

A mere half an hour away from Kansas City lies Overland Park, where Prairiefire can be found.

Prairiefire is an entertainment complex, hosting museums, restaurants, bars, a cinema and a bowling alley.

Its partnership with New York’s American Museum of Natural History means that the museum has some world class exhibitions on offer, which go well with its many excellent dining options.

This modern attraction is certainly a relaxing place to spend the day, whether it’s intellectual stimulation you crave, or something more low-key.

The German-influenced town of Hermann is an intriguing place to visit for the day.

Established in 1837 by a group of Germans hailing from Philadelphia, Hermann sits pretty along the banks of the Missouri river.

There are many local shops to be explored along the streets, as well as restaurants whose wine might just be produced locally.

Why? It is surrounded by excellent wineries, such as Hermannhof, and as if that wasn’t enough, the wineries often host live music on their outdoor terraces.

A beautiful place to spend the day, without a doubt.

10. Lawrence

Lawrence is a great place to go for a change of pace from the big city.

The county seat of Douglas County, it’s home to the University of Kansas, and is also a hotspot for cultural and historic sites.

These include as the Spencer Art Museum, the Watkins Museum of History and the Liberty Hall theatre.

Lawrence also has a surprisingly well-developed music scene, demonstrated by its winning mentions in the New York Times and Esquire.

There’s also opportunity to watch some excellent high-level sports, as the university teams are famous across the region.

Finally, the city’s largest park, South Park, often hosts events, including music festivals, and there’s the Clinton Lake nearby if you fancy a dip.

11. St Joseph

St Joseph used to be an outpost and frontier town on the way to the Wild West, but in modern history is also known for being the town where Eminem was born.

Arguably, though, it’s most famous for being the place where Jesse James met his end.

St Joseph also has plenty of appeal for outdoor lovers, with over 26 miles of parkway.

Hike or bike your way around the trails, explore the lagoon, and perhaps pack a picnic to devour at one of the many convenient picnic spots around the park.

If horse riding is something that interests you, you can also pay a visit to the Pony Express Museum, whose stables date back to 1860, or spend some time trotting around the area on a horse of your own.

12. Louisburg

It may be small, but Louisburg certainly has a lot going for it.

There’s an excellent aquatic centre, which offers golfing as well as swimming, and there’s the city lake with a picturesque path skirting its edge.

You can also find a conservation site and sanctuary, which is even home to a Siberian tiger, and the Powell Observatory with an enormous public telescope.

The local cider mill is also a favourite for first-time visitors, especially during the autumn’s Cider Fest.

All in all, a great day out with options for everyone.

13. Carthage

An Old West and civil war history-lovers dream, Carthage was the location of many civil war battles, including the first and second battles of Carthage.

The place prospered post-civil war, and therefore has many beautiful buildings dotted around the area, constructed with local marble.

Located in Jasper County, Missouri, the city is also nicknamed ‘America’s Maple Leaf City’ because of its beautiful autumnal foliage.

There’s also a lake close by where you can swim.

14. Atchison

Atchison is well worth a visit to learn about its most famous resident: bad-ass female explorer Amelia Earhart.

Earhart was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean solo, among many other impressive feats.

Around sixty miles outside of Kansas City, Atchison plays host to an excellent museum, The Amelia Earhart Birthplace, which is maintained by a group of female pilots.

There’s also the International Forest of friendship, which is an arboretum dedicated to people in aviation.

15. Leavenworth

Leavenworth was the first city to be incorporated into Kansas when it first emerged in 1854. There’s a lot on offer in this compact city, including a local brewery, artisanal crafts, an excellent shopping district with antiques on offer, and of course plenty of fine restaurants.

Make sure to pay a quick visit to Fort Leavenworth while you’re there, which houses the Buffalo Soldier Memorial Park and the Frontier Army museum, both of which provide an excellent history lesson.

The Richard Allen Cultural Centre is also worth a visit, as it is full of interesting pieces of history in the form of artefacts from the black pioneers.

We’re big fans of getting out of town for a few days…but where to go? How far can kids realistically ride in a car?  Kids can make it 3 or 4 hours, and then the questions begin and the movies get old. So we gathered the below list of destination ideas and resources for you!

> Ha Ha Tonka State Park Day Trip

Ha Ha Tonka State Park is located in the Lake of the Ozarks area. You can definitely make it one of the best weekend trips from Kansas City to the Ozarks.

Things to do at Haha Tonka:

There are lakes and trails, and you can head over to Branson for fun too! You can rent boats & jet skis at local marinas and swim till your hands turn pruney! If you like hiking or the outdoors in general, this state park is the place for you…  

One of the highlights is a turn-of-the-century castle built high on a bluff and more than 15 miles of walking trails. These trails lead to sinkholes, natural bridges, caves, and of course the lake itself!

Just head down for the day and pack a lunch for a picnic or decide to make a camping trip out of it!

If you’re wanting to stay for the night, there are many choices that make a great overnight trip for families:

> Canoe, Float, or Paddle the Niangua River

Things to Do on the Niangua River:

Your family can canoe, kayak, float in inner tubes, or raft down the Niangua River! This fun road trip near Lake of the Ozarks is great if your family loves the outdoors or is looking for an adventure. 

There are many fun campgrounds, cabins, & hotels in the area, so it will definitely make a fun weekend trip. Explore the many campsites & rentals available like the Floating R or NRO , which has free camping options available. Big Bear River Resort offers adorable cabins, canoes, camping & great fishing spots too!

Food on the Niangua River:

Depending on where you start your float trip, you can stop at The Gravel Bar & Grill at the Sand Springs Resort .

This restaurant is right off the river, so you can walk from your canoe. It has basic American food, offering something for everyone in your family. They also offer lodging at the resort, so if you are looking for a place to stay and rent your canoes, this might be the spot!

This day trip location is a little further away, so you may want to stay overnight – especially if you spend all day paddling on the river! These are just one of many great options:

> Tanganyika Wildlife Park

Tanganyika Wildlife Park is one of the most unique day trips from Kansas City. Not sure if it would be a day trip, since it is 3 hours, but could be a great weekend getaway in Kansas!  

It is a family-owned zoo with one of the largest animal collections in the state. There are over 40 exhibits, including several interactive stations for your kids to learn.

This is definitely a trip stop to add to your list.  

Tanganyika is the only place in the US where you can interact with ring-tail lemurs in their island habitat and feed Indian rhinos and pygmy hippos.

From most of the reviews that I read, it is a great place for younger kids —more animals in a smaller area to save their little legs (and grandparents too!)

There and back will be about 6 hours in total, so consider finding a place to stay for the night:

> Northwest Arkansas

Rogers, Fayetteville, Springdale

(3 hours, 15 minutes) If your family loves the outdoors, this is a great weekend getaway with your kids! 

Things to Do in NW Arkansas:

There are tons of great family things to do in Northwest Arkansas…not to mention the scenery! You can camp along the river, swim in the clear water, & have quality family time on your family’s vacation. Don’t forget to try canoeing while you are on the river!

There is the Botanical Garden of the Ozarks , Charlie & Willie George Park which features a fun spray park for the kids to cool off & TONS of great hiking. There are also unique things to do in NW Arkansas like, exploring the Dickson Street Bookshop or taking in a local museum.

You can visit the Museum of Native American History , Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art , or the Museum of Discovery – a fantastic kids’ activity! Last but certainly not least, you have to check out the Walmart Museum.

The Roaring River State Park is a great day trip from Kansas City when the weather is warm. You can also make it an overnight trip with camping if it’s a little further for you (Depending on what part of town you’re in) .

Things to Do in Roaring River:

There is so much nature to explore – it could fill your entire weekend! Trout fishing is obviously its biggest draw but there are great things to do and see for the whole family.  

The park is one of the premier trout fisheries in the nation and is stocked each night. There are also 7 trails that lead through the hills, including the Deer Leap trail that overlooks the fish hatchery. There are options to camp as well, including renting a cabin for the weekend.

> Eureka Springs, AR

(3 hours and 50 minutes)

Eureka Springs prides itself on its fabulous festivals. 

I personally love the St. Patrick’s Day celebration and have participated many times, but there are several more throughout the summer—just check to make sure they would be fun for the kids! It is the perfect place for a day or weekend trip from Kansas City!

Things to Do in Eureka Springs, AR:

The city itself is nestled in the Arkansas hills and has great hiking & outdoor adventures.

Check out Lake Leatherwood for hiking, fishing, canoeing & more outdoor activities.

Downtown Eureka Springs is also a great stop; filled with shopping, restaurants & historic character. There are tons of eccentric shops and art galleries to explore too. You can always find good music in many areas of the city, especially during Blues Weekend.

Best Food in Eureka Springs:

Parkside Pretzel & Snack Bar has everything pretzel – pretzel dogs, pretzel churros…use your imagination! Their reviews are stellar & also feature some healthy options. Eureka Springs Funnel Cake Factory also needs to be on your list. If you’re looking for more dinner food, check out the Rockin’ Pig Saloon for yummy ribs & burgers, or Emilio’s Italian Home Cooking . This delicious Italian spot is located inside an old house, with a more upscale feel.   

Plan on staying the night in either The Crescent or The Basin Park Hotel . Both have their share of ghost stories, but their true draw is how they pull you into the vintage feel of the city. I have stayed at both but I don’t think got an ounce of sleep because the lights were always on and I was constantly checking under the bed!

At nearly 4 hours away from the city, you’ll want to stop for a good night’s rest before you head back to KC. Here are some of the closest options:

> Rent a Cabin Near Kansas City

(1-3 hours depending on the cabin)

There are many nice cabins near Kansas City, as well as in the city limits. Whether you’re looking for a staycation or a weekend getaway in the woods, these cabins are always a great idea!

Find large cabins for multiple families, or small cabin sites perfect for a small family trip.

> Branson

(3 hours or less)

Branson is one of the best road trips from Kansas City, because of the windy roads and beautiful scenery. So, start planning a fun weekend getaway.

Things to do in Branson, MO:

There are so many things to do in and around Branson it is mind-blowing; shopping at outlets , dining, amusement parks, go-karts, bumper cars & boats, duck rides, museums, Table Rock State Park has ALL the fun a lake can provide & everything in between!

You could spend a day or two at Silver Dollar City alone. You can grab a coupon book for the outlets too!

Be sure to check out shows like The SIX , Silver Dollar City , and the MASSIVE go-kart tracks! Your family is sure to find kids activities everyone will love.

With Table Rock Lake nearby so you can cool off too. Visit  Table Rock State Park , which has fantastic camping, fishing, boating & great swimming areas! The park is situated on one of the largest lakes in the country, so you are sure to get a beautiful view.  Find more things to do in Branson now!

Best Food in Branson, MO:

On your drive down, stop at Lambert’s , “home of the throwed rolls” in Ozark, MO. It is home cooking at its finest…while they throw rolls at you to eat! Cakes & Cream is one of our family’s favorites. It is a 50’s diner with more desserts than you could imagine. You can get many old classics there.

For the best shakes & homemade pies in town, stop at Billy Bob’s Dairyland . They feature tasty treats as well as yummy burgers & other diner food. (They also have amazing service…)

Branson offers tons of hotels and resorts , but there are also some gems through Airbnb that offer more privacy for families. There are beautifully redone farmhouses , modern cabins and log cabins available too!

> Amana Colonies Weekend Trip

(4 hours, 29 minutes) While this is longer than the 3-hour trips from Kansas City, the Amana Colonies have something for everyone. Plus, if you are looking for a weekend trip, going further away from home may be fun!

Things to Do at Amana Colonies:

The colonies host events each weekend, from a dog speed racers competition to woodworking festivals, so there is always something to do.

They celebrate a rich heritage in arts and crafts and take visitors away from the hustle and bustle of busy life…check it out for your next weekend trip out of KC.

In fact, The Wurst Festival , a celebration of all things sausage , was named the Best New Event of 2015 by the Iowa Tourism Commission.

There are many places to stay camping, bed, and breakfasts, and hotels nearby.

Best Food in Amana Colonies:

If you like German-American food, try the Ox Yoke Inn for fresh, handmade food. The restaurant dates back to the 1940s, so there are definitely delicious reasons it is still in business. Or, head to the Ronneburg Restaurant for another take on German cooking. Both restaurants are highly rated.

> Topeka Day Trip

(45 minutes to an hour)

Even though Topeka is our state capital, most people haven’t explored it even though it is one of the best day trips from Kansas City! With Topeka less than an hour from most places in KC, it is a cheap getaway from Kansas City.

Things to do in Topeka, KS:

There are tons of fun things to do like the Topeka Zoo & Shawnee Lake . Check out our top 6 things to do with kids in Topeka . 

You can even climb to the TOP of the state capitol building , which we definitely recommend during your day trip. Tour reservations are not needed for groups of 10 or smaller. The spiral staircase winds right up the middle of the capitol dome, so don’t look down!

Best Food in Topeka, KS :

Bobo’s Diner is a Topeka classic – handmade onion rings, fries & burgers! They were featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, so you know it’s delicious.

If Mexican is your fam’s jam, El Centenario makes homemade dishes every day. If the kiddos are all in on awesome grilled cheese sandwiches. and mom & dad like craft beer, The Wheel Barrel is a must. They’re located in the NOTO Arts District and are famous for their gourmet grilled cheese & selection of craft beers. You can’t go wrong with anything on your list. 

If you decide to make a weekend of it, there are some family-friendly spots to stay:

> Roadtrip to Des Moines, IA

(2.5 hours – 3 hours)

While Des Moines isn’t the most attractive city to visit, there are tons of things to do with kids in Des Moines. Plus, the drive is manageable for a weekend trip or getaway. 

Things to Do in Des Moines, IA :

Explore Adventureland Themepark , which includes an outdoor waterpark, a theme park, and indoor pools. Or, your family can check out the Science Center of Iowa , where learning is brought to life.

Don’t miss Iowa’s wildest adventure at  Blank Park Zoo  or find fun things to do outside like Gray’s Lake Park, the Living History Farms , or the Iowa State Fairgrounds (if you can make the trip during the Iowa State Fair ).

There’s also the State Capitol Building you can tour and the downtown Des Moines farmer’s market – rated the 2nd best farmer’s market in America

There are fun kids’ activities here that make learning fun! There are also areas with tons of room to play, like Pappajohn Sculpture Park or the Des Moines Botanical Gardens . The sculpture park is a great place for kids to play while enjoying the artwork…plus it’s free!

You can also enjoy some yummy ice cream at Black Cat Ice Cream , just across the street from the sculpture park.

> Wichita, Kansas Day Trip

(3 hours, 20 minutes)

Things to do in Wichita, KS:

Wichita is home to the Museum of World Treasures , which has an extensive World War II collection as well as shrunken heads, dinosaurs, ancient Egyptians, and everything in between.

The Exploration Place , a science education center, is also filled with fun kids’ activities and things to do. Your kids will explore a variety of hands-on activities & exhibits…think of it as the Science City of Wichita. Check out the Exploration Place calendar of events to see what’s happening while you are there.  

There is also the Sedgwick County Zoo , the Botanical Gardens of Wichita , and the Cowtown Museum , which has FREE admission on Sundays from noon to 5 pm. Also, be sure to visit the Keeper of the Plains statue !

Wichita also has its’ own amusement park, All-Star Adventures ! There are go-karts, bumper boats, mini golf, slides, kiddie copters, a driving range, and other fun family activities. You can find other fun things to do with kids in Wichita easily too!

Best Food in Wichita, KS:

If you’re looking for yummy places to eat be sure to check out Dempsey’s Biscuit Co or Piatto for delicious pizzas. Also, be sure to check out the world’s largest mural painted by a single artist – Horizontes.   For an old-fashioned loose-meat burger and house-made root beer stop into Nuway ! The kids will love it.

Depending on where you’re planning on exploring, there are great options all over the city:

> Meade, KS

(camping, dalton gang hideout & state park).

If you’re into history, this is a small town worth visiting. The Dalton Gang Hideout was the home of Eva Whipple, the sister of the Dalton Gang outlaw group. A hidden tunnel was discovered to hide the gang members.

It’s now considered a Kansas tourist attraction, where you can tour the home and the tunnel (reconstructed version). There is also a historical museum!

In addition to the history, there is a beautiful state park – Meade State Park . There is a 360-acre area filled with wildlife, as well as campsites and a lake.

You can camp or fish at the lake with your family to enjoy the great outdoors!

If you don’t want to tent camp, there are other places in the area to stay overnight:

> Omaha Road Trip

(2 hours, 40 minutes)

Omaha, Nebraska is even shorter than a 3-hour trip from Kansas City. Close enough that you can handle the drive but far enough away that it feels like a getaway…

Things to Do in Omaha, NE:

Take advantage of this fun & inexpensive city with these things to do with kids. There is the famous Henry Doorly Zoo , the Wildlife Safari Park , the Aerospace Museum, The Omaha Children’s Museum, the Rose Theater , & tons of free things to do throughout the year. Admission to the Joslyn Art Museum is always free!

There are also beautiful state parks like The Eugene T. Mahoney State Park , which features a suspended ropes course in the trees. There is also a pool, wave pool, splash park, horse riding, mini golf & disc golf, Venture Climb rock climbing & other unique activities. This park has more to do than almost any we have seen…

Best Food in Omaha:

You can also find tons of great restaurants like Mayne Street Market , Yoshitomo (if your fam likes sushi), Hurry Bird (for some creative, delicious breakfast and lunch burritos), or Johnny’s Cafe for delicious food near the old stockyards!

> St. Louis Road Trip

(3 to 3 and a half hours)

Depending on where you are road-tripping from in Kansas City, St. Louis isn’t that far. There are too many things to do with kids in St. Louis for just one day, so make a weekend road trip out of the day trip!

Things to Do in St. Louis:

You can explore the St. Louis Gateway Arch , World Bird Sanctuary , St. Louis Aquarium (the perfect place for kids), Magic House Children’s Museum , and many other kids’ activities. Take a stroll through the Missouri Botanical Gardens, which features a beautiful Japanese garden.

Or, check out Forest Park , which is larger than New York’s Central Park!

Best Food in St. Louis:

If you check out the arch in the morning, be sure to try Chili Mac’s Diner !

Crown Candy is definitely worth a visit. This is a century-old Soda Fountain restaurant that is a St. Louis classic. You will feel like you stepped back in time to 1913 as soon as you step in their doors.

After you try their candy, ice cream & delicious food…it’s game over. Their hearty BLT is stacked to the brim (overflowing really…) with yummy bacon! There are also some delicious donuts at O’Fashion Donuts . Head to The Hill and enjoy some great Italian food at the many restaurants located there.

> Roadtrip to Joplin

(2 hours, 30 minutes)

Things to Do in Joplin, MO:

There are tons of fun things to do in Joplin during your day trip from KC! You can visit a giant waterfall – Grand Falls , George Washington Carver National Monumen t , or walk around downtown Joplin . The Sunshine Lamp District is even named after Joplin’s booming mining days, so you’ll be trendy while walking through history!

There are cute stores to shop, yummy restaurants to try, & even an indoor adventure playground for the kiddos. You can also visit the winery if it’s more of an adult-only road trip! 

Best Food in Joplin:

If BBQ is your thing, you can’t miss Big R’s BBQ & Pies . The locals love this spot for its great BBQ and you can finish off with one of their great pies, so you don’t want to skip this spot!

The Red Onion Cafe is located in a 100-year-old building & highly rated across the board. They serve American food in a relaxed setting – be sure to try the Smoked Chicken Dip! 

> Columbia, MO

(2 hours, 10 minutes)  

Things to Do in Columbia, MO:  

At MU, you can visit the Museum of Art & Archaeology or the Francis Quadrangle , with giant pillars towering overhead. Or, check out the Columbia Art League in downtown Columbia.  Besides visiting The University of Missouri, there are other fun things to do with kids like nature parks.

If your family likes the outdoors, there are many great parks & hiking trails like Rock Bridge Memorial State Park , Finger Lakes State Park , Stephens Lake Beach & Park , or Capen Park .

Finger Lakes State Park is probably the most unique thing you can do, with trails for ATVs, motorbiking, & four-wheelers. There is also a lake where you can go scuba diving, swimming, fishing & non-motorized boating. You can rent kayaks & canoes at the park, so all you have to bring is your family!  

Also visit the Shelter Gardens , a 5-acre botanical garden that is perfect to take a stroll…  

Best Food in Columbia, MO:  

If you’re looking for healthy options, try the Main Squeeze Natural Foods Cafe , which is rated very highly.  If you’re in the mood for good-old deliciousness, try Just Jeff’s Street Food , they have two locations.

They supposedly have the best chili dogs in all of Columbia. Addison’s is also a yummy place to try. Their nachos are our favorite!  You can’t go wrong by stopping for a pizza at Shakespeare’s Pizza, a Columbia tradition since 1973 with 3 locations.

> Eagles Bluff Conservation Area

(2 hours, 6 minutes)

If you’re looking to get away from the city…this is the place for you. There are miles and miles of nature to be explored – the perfect place for a nature weekend getaway. Plus, the shorter drives make this one of our favorite day trips from Kansas City…

About 20 miles away from Salina, there are giant spherical rocks, formed when Kansas was under an ocean. There are over 200 rocks you can explore!   You have a couple of options.

Kansas City is one of those destinations where temperatures vary drastically throughout the year, and it experiences four distinct seasons. While the area of the city is less temperate compared to some other destinations in the country, Kansas City weather is still quite pleasant, with July, August, and June being the hottest months (mid-July highs around 92.7°F or 33.7°C). July and August are also the busiest months , perhaps surprisingly followed by February. You can expect higher hotel rates and more expensive flights during these months, even though that can be mitigated by purchasing tickets and making reservations well in advance.

Very few tourists come to Kansas City in October and November , which means that these two months are the best time to visit Kansas City if you’re looking for a better deal. Between September and November, the daily highs range from 84.3°F (29.1°C) and 51.2°F (10.7°C), with frequent precipitation. The winter is usually far too cold for most people (especially January), although a number of tourists visit Kansas City for the holidays.

The reason why Kansas City is nicknamed the “City of Fountains” is because it has 200 fountains , an impressive number only surpassed by Rome. When it comes to boulevards, Kansas City is second only to Paris, which explains the city’s other most popular name. The city is also sometimes called the “Soccer Capital of America” due to the popularity of the sport among the locals. Start Your Day at the Kansas City Zoo

The Kansas City Zoo occupies a large section of the vast 1,805-acre Swope Park in south Kansas City, with the beautiful Blue River cutting through the middle. The zoo opens at 9:30 AM , so there’s no need to rush things in the morning. Have a bite or grab a cup of coffee and make your way to the Kansas City Zoo. Touring the zoo is a great way to start the day and is one of the best things to do in Kansas City with kids. A lot of emphasis is placed on animal interaction and informative conversations with the zookeepers.

Although the zoo had only three monkeys and four lions when it opened in 1909, it was founded with the intention of becoming the largest zoo in the country. Significant progress has since been made towards that goal, as the zoo today houses more than 1,300 animals and covers an area of 202 acres.

Visit the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Try not to spend more than two hours at the zoo if you want to have enough time for all the other things to do in Kansas City. You can grab a taxi or an Uber from the zoo and get there in 15 minutes. Alternatively, take the bus (number 18) from KC Zoo Main Entrance to Cleveland Avenue & Blue Parkway. Then cross the Blue Parkway on foot and hop aboard bus 47 to Cleaver II Boulevard & Locust Westbound (under 40 minutes total).

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art was founded in the first half of the 20 th century when the trustees of William Rockhill Nelson’s estate decided to join forces with the executors of Mary Atkins’ will. Both were members of Kansas City elite (Nelson was the founder of The Kansas City Star) who posthumously left a large portion of their wealth for the purpose of building an art museum and purchasing art for the citizens of KC.

The museum, which underwent several transformations, is now home to more than 35,000 works of art . The artwork is incredibly diversified, celebrating different cultures and the importance of community participation. You can find ancient Greek sculptures, Renaissance paintings, ancient Egyptian art, Picasso, Warhol, Chinese ceramics, Native American art, and so much more.

A true bastion of art and culture in the heart of the city, the museum is an architectural marvel in its own right, and, unbelievably, it is completely free , in spite of being a world-class museum, touted by many visitors as the best museum they have ever visited. Head Downtown and Explore the Heart of the City

When you come to Kansas City, you can’t just spend the whole day exploring museums and galleries, no matter how beautiful and exciting they may be. At least a portion of your time should be spent on sightseeing and finding interesting new places on your own. And one of the best places to see in Kansas is Downtown Kansas City , famous for its top-level foodie hotspots , charming shops, concert halls and live music venues, and numerous attractions and landmarks. Some of the latter include the City Market KC, the Kauffman Center, the Sprint Center, the National WWI Museum, the Central Library, the Union Station, and the entire Power & Light District.

From the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, you can take a short 10-minute walk west to Main Street , the city’s busiest street, and then take the bus north until you reach Union Station or one of the other landmarks. The entire area between the Missouri River in the north and the 31 st street in the south is defined as Downtown Kansas City. In 2012, Forbes magazine selected Downtown Kansas City as one of the best downtowns in the country for its gorgeous fountains, rich culture, vibrant culinary scene, and upscale shopping.

Pick a Nice Spot for Lunch

Speaking of the vibrant culinary scene, Kansas City has always been famous for its barbeque and steak, so good that even Obama couldn’t resist visiting a Kansas City BBQ restaurant. Once you’ve had enough of sightseeing, pick one of the nearby restaurants and try the delicious beef ribs, brisket, or steak that the city is known for.

Jack Stack Barbecue-Freight House is one of the best eateries in Downtown Kansas City, right across the train tracks near Union Station . Set in the converted Freight House, the restaurant’s interior is almost as impressive as its delicious barbecue. Highlights include the amazing burnt ends smoked beef brisket, a legendary Kansas City staple, and the tender, flavorful BBQ prime rib.

The only other restaurant that compares is the nationally celebrated Joe’s Kansas City BBQ , a gas station restaurant that had been famous for years before gas station restaurants became the next big thing in cuisine. During lunch, the line can be pretty long, but it moves quickly, and it is certainly worth waiting for what just might be one of the best dining experiences of your life.

Jeff and Joy Stehney started Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que, now one of the most popular restaurants in the world, as Slaughterhouse Five , which is also the name of their massive barbecue platter/combo of smoked meats that serves 8-10 people. The gas-station-located original Joe’s Kansas City BBQ can be found on the corner of W 47 th Street and Mission Road.

Check Out Union Station Kansas City

In case you had your lunch at Joe’s, come back downtown to see the city’s majestic, historic central train station, dating back to 1914. Visiting Union Station, an important historical landmark, is one of the most unbridled fun things to do in Kansas City, not just because of the station itself, which is an architectural masterpiece, but also because of the numerous exhibits, as well as the nearby planetarium and science center.

The station was at its peak during WWII , but experienced a period of decline after the 1950s, which eventually led to it being closed in 1985. Luckily, it was reopened in 2002 , and is now the second busiest Amtrak station in the state. The Grand Hall is especially impressive with its massive 3,500-pound chandeliers and a gorgeous six-foot clock in the central arch. Luckily, most of them are pretty close together, not too far from Union Station, which means that you can potentially get around to visiting more than one in a single afternoon.

The closest one to Union Station is Science City. In fact, this museum is located in the same building. It is very family friendly (named one of the best science museums in the country by Parents Magazine), and houses a planetarium in addition to a large number of interactive exhibits that show how science is everywhere around us, as an essential part of our day-to-day lives.

Among other options, let us mention the National WWI Museum and Memorial , just south of Union Station. The museum’s gorgeous 217-foot (66 m) Liberty Tower can be seen from quite a distance as it rises over the neighboring area. It is the only museum in the country dedicated to the Great War, and its 9,000 red poppies are a constant reminder of the 9 million soldiers who perished during the war.

Feel Free to Live It up at Worlds of Fun

If you’re looking for fun things to do in Kansas City – or at the very least something a bit different than your typical touristy activities, nothing can beat Worlds of Fun , a KC amusement park covering 235 acres. And if that doesn’t sound enticing enough, Worlds of Fun is connected to Oceans of Fun, a tropical-themed waterpark which opened in 1982 as the largest water park in the world. The parks, which are both covered by a single admission fee, are located north of the Missouri River, and it takes approx. 20 minutes to get there by car from the Union Station.

Sadly, Worlds of Fun is usually closed for the winter. Same with the waterpark. In April, Worlds of Fun is open on weekends, before transitioning to a daily schedule from May-August. It is again open weekends-only September through November. In case you visit Kansas City when Worlds of Fun is open, give it a visit, you will not be disappointed.

Consider the Alternatives

In case you don’t feel like spending the afternoon at an amusement park (or if it is closed), there are still a couple of fun things to do in Kansas City that you can try. Sports fans will love the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, located at 18th & Vine, right next door to the American Jazz Museum . While the Jazz Museum features interactive exhibits and live performances, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum houses a large number of exhibits that follow the history of America’s segregated league from 1920 (when it was founded) until Jackie Robinson from the Kansas City Monarchs got recruited by a major league baseball team (Brooklyn Dodgers, late 1940s).

This museum focuses on one of the reasons why Kansas City is such an important place when it comes to African-American history. You can visit one or both of these museums, or you can check out Sea Life Kansas City on Crown Center Square – less than 10 minutes (0.4 mile) from Union Station. With 5,000 sea critters, including sharks that you can come face-to-face within the aquarium’s viewing tunnel, Sea Life is a must-visit.

If you’d like to see as much as possible on foot, the best way to spend the afternoon is as follows. First lunch, then Union Station Kansas City (with the model train exhibition), then the National WWI Museum and Memorial , with Sea Life Kansas City saved for last. If you are looking for things to do in Kansas City with kids, the LEGOLAND Discovery Center Kansas City is literally next door, so it’s a no-brainer really.

Try the Famous Kansas City Steak

In Kansas City, there are few bad restaurants, which means that all you have to decide is what you’d like to go for and take it from there. If you’d like to eat a great steak, ’37 Steak is one of the better options. Located in a hotel on Riverboat Drive, overlooking the Missouri River, this steakhouse is refined and elegant, although not as posh, and certainly not as expensive as the flashy, clubby restaurants south of the river.

If you’ve had enough of meat or if you want to try something completely different, consider Cafe Gratitude Kansas City , a vegan restaurant (the blasphemy!) near the intersection of Southwest Boulevard and Broadway. Not only is it right behind the Union Station, but it also serves creative, delicious dishes in an artsy, positive interior with a mellow, welcoming vibe. All the veggies are fresh and locally sourced, resulting in delicious, hearty dishes such as the Luminous Salad and the thick, spicy Vegan Chili.

See What the City Has to Offer at Night

In the city famous for its jazz, a regular night out simply will not do. Instead, you will want to hit one of the great live music Kansas City venues to close out the day. Howl at the Moon Kansas City , near the massive Sprint Center arena, stands out as an excellent choice. Let your hair down at this lively bar with thrilling dueling piano shows fueled by colorful and creative bucket drinks. If you would prefer to just have a couple of great craft beers instead of snazzy cocktails, check out the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium , which is right around the corner.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art appeals to many kinds of visitors, such as little kids who appreciate the giant badminton birdie installations (four 18-foot shuttlecocks, to be exact) on the 22-acre lawn, or adults who enjoy the play of light in Caravaggio's "Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness." The art museum's permanent collection spans thousands of years, includes more than 35,000 pieces and features art from Europe, Asia and America. The museum also displays interesting architectural pieces like centuries-old furniture and stained glass windows, in addition to more modern paintings, prints and drawings, sculptures and photography. What's more, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art showcases different exhibitions every year across a variety of mediums; check the site for upcoming exhibits during your visit.

Visitors are consistently impressed with this museum, saying they could spend hours perusing the interesting art. Recent travelers called out the massive sculpture park for its host of unique installations and said the grounds were delightful to stroll on a nice day. Many said they also appreciated that there was no fee to browse this museum's extensive collection of works.

Arabia Steamboat Museum Arabia Steamboat Museum

The side-wheel steamer Arabia was constructed in 1853 for powering through the muddy Missouri River waters with up to 200 tons of supplies in tow. But later, it snagged a felled tree trunk and quickly disappeared under the sea. More than a century later, David Hawley discovered the sunken steamer a half-mile from the river bank beneath 45 feet of earth; it then became the focus of the Arabia Steamboat Museum.

Today you can take a tour of the steamer's deck and hull, but there's also a great deal more to see. The museum features a general store, a cargo gallery and several other galleries with odds and ends recovered from the excavation of the great Steamboat Arabia. In addition to seeing many of the well-preserved cargo pieces that were excavated from the wreck, the tour includes a video summarizing the history of the Arabia and how they were able to retrieve the supplies.

Kansas City residents are a little bit prideful about the Boulevard Brewing Company, as if to say: "So what if  St. Louis has Anheuser-Busch , we have Boulevard." Among its many beers, this brewery offers its fans everything from unfiltered wheat (a favorite) to pale ale to pilsner. The brewery has become the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest and ships its beers to more than 30 states across the U.S, and Washington, D.C. The brewery has seen such success and growth that it opened a visitors center in the summer of 2016 with beer exhibits, a larger tasting room and an expanded retail shop.

Beer connoisseurs are in for a treat at this brewery. Visitors can take a  free guided tour, which includes a short video of how the beer is made, a history of the Boulevard Brewing Company, a walk-through and also some samples. Travelers said the tour guides are insightful, entertaining and funny and offer a thorough presentation of the various types of beer.

Westport Westport free

Just north of the Country Club Plaza , Westport is a popular neighborhood where people flock to enjoy shopping, dining and a night out on the town. It's known for being the oldest established community in Kansas City and, fun fact, Westport was where pioneers began their trek along the Oregon Trail in the mid-1800s.  Today, the area is filled with bars, restaurants, local shops, entertainment venues and hotels.  There's everything from Ernie Bigg's Piano Bar and The Kick Comedy Theater to laid-back and upscale eateries. (Travelers recommend stopping in Ca Va Champagne bar to try its sparkling wines and creative cocktails.)

According to visitors, Westport is a lively neighborhood brimming with local businesses and restaurants. Many say it's easy to maneuver on foot and the bars come to life at night and on the weekends.

Country Club Plaza Country Club Plaza free

One of Kansas City's most popular places to dine, shop, movie watch or simply just walk around is the Country Club Plaza. This outdoor shopping district offers mostly chain stores (Anthropologie, Gap and the like), hotels and eateries, but also a handful of high-end shops like Michael Kors and Coach. The biggest draw here, though, is the architecture. The plaza boasts Spanish-style fountains (modeled after those in Seville), tiles and statues that fill the district and make for some excellent photo ops.

Recent patrons said Country Club Plaza, while not all that exciting, is something visitors should take at least a stroll through to enjoy the fountains and expertly designed buildings.

National World War I Museum National World War I Museum

The National World War I Museum is arranged in narrative form, as if WWI soldiers were telling visitors their own war stories through the exhibits. The museum features replicas of trenches, theaters, propaganda posters and guns. What's especially moving is the glass bridge, which spans an abyss of 9,000 poppies, symbolizing the 9 million lives lost during the war.

Most agree that this private museum is a national treasure. Visitors were pleased with the wealth of information available, the interesting exhibits and the memorabilia on display.

Kauffman Stadium Kauffman Stadium

Major League Baseball's Kansas City Royals make their home at Kauffman Stadium and the Royals are beloved by their Kansas City fans. The stadium was renovated in 2009 and, even better, this team has seen a resurgence over the past few years, bringing a new wave of enthusiasm across town. The Royals made a trip to the World Series in 2014 and secured a World Series win in 2015 – the first championship won by the baseball team since 1985. The stadium itself is filled with food and drink vendors, plus tickets to a game are on the more affordable side. Kauffman Stadium offers ballpark tours year-round (Tuesday through Saturday during the season, Saturdays and select Tuesdays in the offseason). Ticket prices range from $15 to $35; discounts are available for seniors and children, and group rates are available with advance notice.

Baseball fans say this stadium is beautiful and encourage visitors to attend a game during their trip to Kansas City. Travelers say the energy inside the stadium is impressive and add that the fans are welcoming and friendly.

Kansas City's City Market Kansas City's City Market

As one of the largest public farmers markets in the Midwest, City Market features more than 30 permanent merchants selling produce, specialty foods, fresh meat, home decor, flowers and more every day of the week. On the weekends, though, you can expect to find more than 150 vendors bursting with local products. (Be sure to get an early start on Saturdays and Sundays, as the stalls are only open from 7 or 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. year-round.) When you’re finished exploring the pop-up shops, you can stop into a clothing boutique or grab lunch at one of the surrounding restaurants and cafes.

The market’s significance extends beyond fresh fruits and veggies, though. Founded in 1857, the space was once a site for commerce, horse trading, political rallies, circuses and more. In fact, this Kansas City staple is also home to the Arabia Steamboat Museum , which displays a collection of artifacts that were recovered from the bottom of the Missouri River 132 years after the Steamboat Arabia sank in 1856. Among the once-lost cargo items were dishes and other fine china, clothing, guns, children’s toys and even the world’s oldest pickles. Admission into the museum ranges from $5.50 (kids ages 4 to 14) to $14.50 for adults. Seniors receive a $1 discount and children 3 and younger get in free of charge. Your ticket includes a guided tour, which takes place every 30 minutes until 3:30 p.m. The museum itself is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

This district (right next to downtown's Sprint Center) consists of more than 50 shops, restaurants and nightlife venues – and it's one of Kansas City's newer and most popular areas. One of its coolest features is its two-floor KC Live entertainment venue, which hosts about 150 concerts and other performances each year. But on an off night, there are plenty of other places to keep you busy – like PBR Big Sky (where you can ride a mechanical bull), Shark Bar (where you can dance to '90s music) or Howl at the Moon (where you can sing along with the dueling pianists).

Travelers say this is the place to go if you're looking to let your hair down and enjoy Kansas City nightlife, adding that with such a wide variety of restaurants and bars everyone should be able to find something to suit their fancy.

Kansas City Zoo Kansas City Zoo

The Kansas City Zoo opened in 1909 with a modest collection of animals: four lions, three monkeys, a fox, a wolf, a badger, a lynx, an eagle and some other birds. Since then, it has expanded to become one of the most respected zoos in the country, with exhibits ranging from the $15 million Helzberg Penguin Plaza to the interactive Stingray Bay to a chimpanzee habitat praised by Jane Goodall herself. Guests can also enjoy daily sea lion shows, zookeeper chats and elephant painting demonstrations, as well as safari boat rides across the zoo’s African Plains and overnight campouts in various exhibits for kids ages 6 and older. 

Recent visitors were impressed by the cleanliness of the zoo and the amount of exhibits throughout the property, but they warned that you should wear comfortable shoes. The 202-acre park requires a lot of walking, and you shouldn’t expect to see everything during your visit. Past zoogoers also recommend packing your own snacks and lunches if you plan to stay for most of the day, as the food in the park can be a bit expensive. 

The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures

If you’re looking to take a trip down memory lane during your Kansas City vacation, The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures is the place to do it. Open since 1982, this museum has the world’s largest fine-scale miniature collection and one of the most robust antique toy collections on public display. You’ll find exhibits with Queen Anne-style dolls dating back as far as 1750, original Barbie dolls and vintage Hot Wheels cars. Many recent guests were thrilled to see the toys they played with as children from decades ago. Though – for that exact reason – some patrons felt this museum was better suited to nostalgic grown-ups than to children, who may quickly lose interest in the glass cases filled with old toys. Still, guests of all ages can appreciate the vast collection of small-scale items, from miniature handcarved tables and chairs to pint-sized animal figurines.

The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures is open Wednesday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed on Tuesdays). It is located on the University of Missouri-Kansas campus, a few blocks south of Country Club Plaza . Admission is free for children ages 5 and younger; $5 for minors between 6 and 17 (and college students with an ID); $7 for adults older than 65 and $8 for those ages 18 through 64. Hallmark Visitors Center Hallmark Visitors Center free

Chances are you've given or received a Hallmark greeting card at some point in your life. What you may not know is that Hallmark originated in Kansas City. In 1910, 18-year-old Joyce C. Hall of Nebraska gathered two shoeboxes filled with postcards and set out to create a greeting card company. More than a century later, Hallmark – still run by Hall’s descendants – is one of the largest card brands in the world.

If you’re looking for the same warm and fuzzy feeling you get when you receive a card from a loved one, recent visitors say this museum is a must-see. Wander through the exhibits at your own pace, or give the visitor center a call to sign up for an hour-long guided tour (offered every day at 2 p.m.). Either way, you’ll take a journey through the history of Hallmark with interactive displays and detailed exhibits, and you can also view a short film about the company or take a break at the gift shop. For children, the Hallmark Visitors Center offers a scavenger hunt that will send them on a mission to find specific artifacts throughout the museum.

For a unique outing during your Kansas City getaway, consider seeing a performance at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Unveiled in 2011, the center is home to the Kansas City Ballet, Lyric Opera and Kansas City Symphony. It also welcomes visiting artists ranging from famed photographers to well-known actors and actresses. Recent travelers were amazed by the property; they described the building itself as stylish and beautiful and the performances as phenomenal. Kid-friendly shows are also available throughout the year.

Parking for the events can be found in the adjacent Arts District Garage for $10 per vehicle. Though the garage has space for 1,000 cars, visitors are encouraged to arrive early to secure a spot.

Union Station Union Station

Kansas City’s Union Station was built in 1914 and primarily used as a train station at that time. During World War II, the 850,000-square-foot compound continued to welcome patrons with restaurants, a barber shop and a cigar store, as well as professional spaces like railroad offices and the country’s largest Railway Express Building (for shipping freight and mail). Union Station shut down in the 1980s and almost faced demolition on several occasions. It reopened in 1999 (following a three-year revitalization project) and has since drawn tourists from around the world with its stunning chandeliers and 95-foot ceilings.

In addition to hosting weddings and business meetings, Union Station also displays exhibits ranging from the newly redesigned KC Rail Experience to an interactive center known as Science City . There is also a planetarium and theaters featuring giant-screen movies and live shows. The station still shows its roots, though; just like a century ago, you can still hop on an Amtrak train and head to a new destination. Recent visitors said the historical, beautifully restored building is a must-see. They also said it’s especially great for families traveling with kids (thanks to a number of child-friendly exhibits) but noted there is something there for people of all ages.

Science City is an interactive science center within Kansas City’s Union Station . It is geared toward children, which makes it a great place to go with your littlest travelers. Daily exhibits include the Dinolab and Digsite, where kids can unearth fossils and learn more about paleontology; a genetics lab, where budding scientists can learn how the human genome makes everyone unique; the Mr. E Hotel, which is filled with more than 20 optical illusions; the Sky Bike ride, which is suspended on a high-wire 30 feet in the air; and more. Recent visitors loved Science City, noting that they had just as much fun as their kids. Many recommended arriving early, as the center can get very crowded (even during the week, due to school field trips) and some activities and demonstrations may finish earlier in the day.

Admission into Science City costs $13.25 for ages 3 and up, plus a $1 reservation fee if you book ahead of time. This ticket allows you to go in and out of the building as you please on the day you reserve. Children younger than 3 can enter Science City free of charge. The center is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed on Mondays and major holidays, though you can visit on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. Parking costs between $5 and $15, depending where you park and how long you stay. Not every parking garage accepts all major credit cards, so be sure to check Science City’s website before your visit.

Arrowhead Stadium Arrowhead Stadium

Arrowhead Stadium has been the home of the Kansas City Chiefs professional football team since it opened in 1972. It is adjacent to Kauffman Stadium , where the Kansas City Royals professional baseball team plays. (In fact, there is even a private underground service tunnel between the two.)

Football fans can tour the roughly 80,000-seat Arrowhead Stadium in a number of ways. Public, guided tours last 90 minutes and take visitors through the press box, the CommunityAmerica Club Level, the locker room, the field and the Chiefs Hall of Honor Presented by Spectrum. Public tours are offered on Fridays at 2 or 4 p.m. and on Saturdays at 11 a.m. or 1 p.m., and tickets cost $30 for adults and $25 for kids. If you’re looking for a more exclusive experience, consider a private guided tour (which visits the same areas of the stadium, but in a one-on-one setting) or a game day tour, which includes a 60-minute walk through the press box and the Chiefs Hall of Honor Presented by Spectrum, followed by 20 minutes on the sidelines of the field during the pregame activities. The $1M AdventHealth Championship golf tourney returns to Blue Hills C.C. Thursday

The four-day AdventHealth Championship returns to Kansas City’s Blue Hills Country Club this week with some 156 professional golfers competing for $1 million in prize money.

The annual 72-hole Korn Ferry Tour tournament tees off with renewed vigor on Thursday after a three-year extension for AdventHealth to remain the Kansas City event’s title sponsor through 2029 was announced Tuesday.

This is the 14th year of AdventHealth’s sponsorship of the event in KC and the fifth straight year the tourney is taking place at Blue Hills.

“We are proud to have our name support the only PGA Tour-sanctioned event in the greater Kansas City region,” said Sam Huenergardt, CEO of AdventHealth MId-America Region. “We know this championship is a cornerstone event for the community that, much like our own care providers, utilizes professional golf to make a positive impact here in Kansas City and the charities it supports.”

Past AdventHealth tourney champions include two-time PGA Tour winners Sepp Straka (who won here in 2018), reigning champion Grayson Murray (2023) and Cameron Young (2021), who currently ranks No. 16 in the world.

Murray, 30, won last year by overtaking Wilson Furr in Sunday’s final round. It was Murray’s second Korn Ferry Tour victory, but his first since 2016.

Blue Valley North grad Harry Higgs, 32, who’s previously played on the PGA Tour, is in this week’s field. So, too, is 37-year-old former K-State standout Robert Streb, who like Higgs has competed on the PGA Tour and will be playing in this week’s event via a sponsor’s exemption

Tickets for this year’s AdventHealth Championship — $10 for adults per day or $30 for a four-day pass — are available at www.adventhealthchampionship.com/tickets . Admission remains free for those 17 and younger, members of the military and AdventHealth workers with identification.

According to a news release, last year’s AdventHealth Championship “raised nearly $250,000 for the tournament’s benefactor, the AdventHealth Kansas City Foundation, to distribute through the Play It Forward program, which aims to support fundraiser awareness and assist philanthropic needs.”

The event has generated nearly $1 million in funds for local charities in the Kansas City community since 2009, according to AdventHealth Championship officials.

“We are excited to extend our partnership with the PGA TOUR to keep professional golf in Kansas City,” said tournament director Rick Amos. “This event has tremendous momentum with AdventHealth as our title sponsor and host organization.

“The championship is set up for dynamic growth over the next few years with the ultimate goal of continuing to give back to our community.”

The Korn Ferry Tour will this year award 30 PGA Tour cards to top players based on points earned throughout the lower series’ 2024 season. Korn Ferry Tour alumni currently comprise some 83% of the PGA Tour’s membership.

The AdventHealth Championship’s annual pro-am is scheduled for Wednesday at Blue Hills.

Chiefs Travis Kelce attends 87th concert on Eras Tour in Paris

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Taylor Swift’s love of numbers and numerology is rubbing off on boyfriend Travis Kelce.

The tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs attended the 87th show of the Eras tour in Paris Sunday. The concert is even more special for the NFL star because Kelce’s jersey number is 87.

Video shared on social media showed Kelce attending the concert with Bradley Cooper and Gigi Hadid. All three are shown dancing and swaying to the music from a Paris La Défense Arena suite. Sunday’s concert was the fourth and final show in Paris for Taylor Swift and her sold-out Eras Tour.

The set list included Swift singing “So High School,” a song she wrote about Kelce. It marked the first time she sang it live in concert while he was in attendance.

The Eras Tour now heads to Stockholm, Sweden for three concerts before ending the month in Portugal.

It’s been a busy couple of months for both Swift and Kelce.

She headed back out on tour, complete with new costumes and a new set list.

He signed a new deal with the Chiefs that is reportedly work more than $17 million a year, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.

Kelce also spent time in Los Angeles filming both “ Are you Smarter Than a Celebrity? ” and “ American Horror Story: Grotesquerie .”

P aris, France - Taylor Swift had some extra-special support in the crowd for her final show in Paris, France, amid the European leg of her sold-out Eras Tour.

Travis Kelce was spotted by fans cheering on his 34-year-old girlfriend as she took the stage for one last night in the City of Love.

The Super Bowl champ was joined by Taylor's longtime pal, Gigi Hadid , and her rumored beau, actor Bradley Cooper.

Also in attendance for the Mother's Day performance was the Karma singer's mom, Andrea Swift.

In what many Swifties were quick to brand an Easter egg for Travis, Taylor debuted a new yellow and red set for the 1989 era in a likely nod to his Kansas City Chiefs uniform colors.

Oh, and did we mention this is show number 87 of the tour?

Paris saw the debut of several new additions to The Eras Tour – most notably, a new segment for Taylor's 11th studio album, The Tortured Poets Department .

And on Sunday, the Grammy winner finally got to play one of the tracks, So High School, in front of its rumored inspiration!

During her performance of So High School, Taylor was caught blowing a kiss to the tight end as he watched from the stands.

While fans quickly surmised the song was a tribute to Travis when it dropped last month, the speculation was all but confirmed when Taylor added it to the main setlist and even featured a few dance moves inspired by the NFL star .

During the evening's surprise set , she kept the tributes coming with a performance of The Alchemy – also assumed to be written about Travis – which she mashed up with Treacherous.

Last but certainly not least, Taylor brought back her iconic lyric swap for the evening's final number as she sang, "Karma is the guy on the Chiefs."

Tour Topeka connects locals with fun summer activities

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - This Saturday, Tour Topeka held its inaugural event at Crestview Park. This kickoff was geared toward the whole family.

“The kickoff is really an opportunity for folks to come out and meet the different organizations that are going to be running the continual events,” said Dustyn Whyte from Shawnee County Parks and Recreation.

Attendees got together to explore a variety of outdoor groups and experience what that activity would be like.

“The idea there is that if people get an opportunity to test it and then learn more about it, they may actually get involved in it, and have something to do for the rest of the summer,” says Mr. White.

“It’s a beautiful day to have this event first of all,” said Shana Hheedorn, an attendee. “The parks and rec brought out all of these awesome toys for us to play with. We’ve been out playing catch and riding bikes, and the obstacle course has been fantastic. My 5-year-old did it all by himself.”

This event showed what the outdoors of Topeka can offer anyone who wants to roam on the wild side.

“I think we take our trails and other things for granted,” said Andy Fry of Topeka Community Cycle Project. “This helps to kind of reinvigorate people and get them ready for the more active season and get outside. I think it also exposes people to many different groups and activities that they might not have otherwise seen, so we can be a more active, healthy community.”

Tour Topeka also offers the chance to learn more about how the city functions.

“We’ve had people come out and talk to us about city taxes, and we’ve had people talk to us about different clubs and organizations to get involved in for children and adults,” said Mrs. Hhedorn. “It’s been a fantastic day, and I’m excited to come to more of these events.”

Travis Kelce was spotted supporting his girlfriend, Taylor Swift, at her 87th Eras Tour concert in Paris Sunday.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, was seen dancing along to the pop star’s 2019 hit “Lover” alongside Gigi Hadid and Bradley Cooper in a video posted to X .

Along with the crowd, Kelce swayed his arms back and forth while rocking his hips.

As for Hadid, 29, she also waved her arms in the air while vibrantly cheering for her bestie as Cooper, 49, joined in.

Other videos showed the threesome jamming out and singing throughout Swift’s setlist.

Kelce stood out in the crowd as he sported an all-white outfit, consisting of a button-up and pants.

For Hadid’s part, she wore a long black cardigan and jeans while her boyfriend sported a long-sleeve button-up shirt and slacks.

The NFL star’s attendance was extra special as Sunday marks Swift’s 87th time performing her Eras Tour concert, which is the same jersey number he wears. Coincidence? Not really.

This was the first time Kelce supported his girlfriend as she kicked off the European leg of her concert series. He had been absent from her last few  Paris La Défense Arena shows .

The “Lover” songstress, 34, added a few new songs to her setlist , including a few from her newly released album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”

The song is rumored to be about Kelce as Swift sings about an exciting teenage romance.

While the “New Heights” podcaster wasn’t present to witness the bit, he sent his support from afar.

Before hitting the stage, the “Cruel Summer” songstress’ guitarist, Paul Sidoti, took to Instagram to share a picture of himself with Swift.

“[Let’s f–king go]!!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻,” Kelce commented.

The tight end has shown his support for the 14-time Grammy winner at a handful of her shows and was last spotted at her Singapore stop ahead of her two-month break.
