15 Best Things to Do in Regina (Saskatchewan, Canada)

The capital city of Saskatchewan is the cultural and economic hub for the southern part of the province. Regina is a lovely city with a rich history that dates back to 1882. Some of this can still be seen today, making it a city well worth visiting.

Regina is filled with culture, having numerous performing arts centres, museums and annual events. It also has more parks and green spaces per capita than any other city in the country. All-in-all, it is a great city for a holiday with much to offer. Here are the best things to go in Regina :

  • 1.  Wander around a museum

Royal Saskatchewan Museum

The Royal Saskatchewan Museum was the first ever museum to open in the province and in the Prairies. It is a natural history museum and is a great place to wander around for a couple of hours.

There are three separate areas at the museum, all of which are just as fascinating as the next. All of them have special exhibits to showcase their theme.

The Life Sciences Gallery teaches you about the province’s landscapes and biological diversity, while the First Nations Gallery is a view of the traditions and history of Saskatchewan’s aboriginal communities. Or opt to gaze at dinosaurs and reptiles at the Earth Science Gallery.

2. Watch cadets in training

RCMP Academy

Regina is home to the RCMP Academy, Depot Division, which has been conducting police training since 1885. Visit the depot and watch cadets in training.

Most people visit the depot on a Monday, Wednesday of Friday for the ‘noon parade’, which actually is not at noon but at 12:45pm. There are also plenty of other things to see.

The chapel is one of the most famous buildings on the grounds, what with its beautiful stained glass windows. Other buildings worth visiting include the Centennial Building, the Firearms Complex and the RCMP Heritage Centre.

3. Have fun with science

Saskatchewan Science Centre

Since 1989 the Saskatchewan Science Centre has been letting people have fun with science. No matter what age you are, you will thoroughly enjoy a visit to this interactive science museum.

There are a number of permanent exhibits at the museum, as well as special exhibits that come around from time to time. The museum also hosts social events, like Adult Science Nights, the After Dark Film Series and Fantasy Food.

Watch critters crawling around, squeeze through tunnels, be an astronaut in training or play virtual hockey. There is also a shop onsite that sells some interesting souvenirs.

4. Go back in time

Warehouse District

Being such an old city, it should be of no surprise that there are some fantastic historic districts in Regina. One of the most popular is the Warehouse District, which is just northeast of the central business district.

The Warehouse District used to be an area filled with warehouses that accommodated freight for the nearby railway station. Today, it is a lively neighbourhood that is filled with shops, restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

Some of the establishments in this area occupy historic warehouses. There are also quite a few cool residential accommodations.

5. Relax in a park

Wascana Centre

Not just any park, but the 9.3 square kilometre Wascana Centre that is built around Wasana Lake. This is the fourth largest urban park in the country and is even larger than New York City’s Central Park!

There are a number of buildings, facilities and attractions at the Wasana Centre, making it easy to spend an entire day here. It is also home to plenty of waterfowl, like ducks, geese and other birds.

Relax in the park all year round and watch people go by, or just admire the lake. The park is also the site of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the Saskatchewan Science Centre and the University of Regina, amongst other places.

6. Look at art

MacKenzie Art Gallery

The MacKenzie Art Gallery is also within the Wasana Centre, though it is an attraction in its own right. There are eight galleries here, with over 160,000 people looking at its artwork each year.

There are over 3,800 pieces at the gallery, most of which are Western Canadian historical and contemporary works. Some of the artists who have work in the collection include Patrick Hayman, Bill Vazan, Ivan Eyre and Roger Ing.

Go on a self-guided tour of the gallery to admire and look at art. Don’t forget to head outside to wander around the outdoor sculpture garden.

7. Spend a day at the beach

Last Mountain Lake

The town of Regina Beach sits on the shores of Last Mountain Lake just northwest of Regina. The town is a popular summer resort area and is a great place to go if you want to spend a day at the beach.

Regina Beach has an old-fashioned charm about it, although it has been fully modernised. Swimming here is pretty good, as is laying around and working on your tan.

If you want to get out of the sun, head to the Lakeside Heritage Museum or enjoy a meal at one of the beachside restaurants. There are also a few shops for buying clothes and souvenirs.

8. Go to a show

Conexus Arts Centre

Whether you are a fan of orchestral music or theatrical stage performances, you will not be bored in Regina. The city has so much to offer in terms of live performances, as well as a few venues to enjoy them.

Conexus Arts Centre is one of the largest and hosts numerous shows, including world-renowned travelling performances. It is also the home of the Regina Symphony Orchestra.

The Globe Theatre opened its doors in 1966 and since then has shown a plethora of performances. The building itself is also incredible, as it is housed in the Old Post Office.

9. Place a bet at the casino

Casino Regina

Casino Regina sees over two million visitors a year and is arguably the biggest attraction in the city. Place a bet at one of its 35 game tables or try your luck on one of the casino’s 800 slot machines.

If poker is your thing, there is a 9-table poker room with classic, diamond and harvest poker classic games. There are also weekly Texas Hold’em tournaments.

When you are bored of gambling or want to spend your winnings, you can enjoy a show. There are also a number of restaurants onsite where you can enjoy a meal or have a drink.

10. Tour around parliament

Saskatchewan Legislative Building

Not only is the exterior of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building magnificent, but the interior is as well. In fact, the Beaux-Arts building is a National Historic site.

Take a 30 minute guided tour around the building and learn about its history. Don’t forget to bring a camera to snap photos of building and its beautiful surroundings.

The grounds of the building are also spectacular and have some great things to see. Some of these include an equestrian statue of Queen Elizabeth II and the Trafalgar Fountain, which was brought from London’s Trafalgar Square.

11. Stop and smell the roses

Regina Floral Conservatory

This is very possible to do at the Regina Floral Conservatory. The conservatory is home to tropical plants, flowers and trees, and is quite a tranquil place to be.

Stroll through the conservatory and admire the beautiful floral displays. These change around six times a year, so if you are ever visiting Regina at different times of the year it is well worth coming here again.

In additional to just being a beautiful place to walk around, the Regina Floral Conservatory also hosts events, like public teas and guided meditation sessions. There are also educational programs for the kids.

12. Enjoy an event

Queen City Ex

Regina hosts many throughout the year, all of which are a great experience. Enjoy an event and mingle with the locals no matter what time of year you are visiting.

One of the most popular events is the Queen City Ex, which is the largest fair in the province. Around the same time is the Regina Folk Festival, which is Western Canada’s longest running music festival.

In the winter, enjoy the Downtown Ice & Fire Winter Carnival, while November’s Canadian Western Agribition is Canada’s premiere agriculture show. There is also the Regina International Fringe Theatre Festival, the Cathedral Village Arts Festival and the multicultural Mosaic Festival.

13. Go on a shopping spree

Victoria Square Shopping Centre

Like any major city, this is very easy to do in Regina. Especially if money is of no object.

If you are a fan of locally-owned shops, walk along the pedestrianized streets in Cathedral Village or the Old Warehouse District. There are also large shopping malls with known brand shops, like the Cornwall Centre, Victoria Square Shopping Centre and Southland Mall.

Visit Regina between March and December to enjoy the Regina Farmers Market. Here, you will get the chance to buy local arts and crafts, and in some cases meet the artisan.

14. Paint yourself green and white

Saskatchewan Roughriders

Many visitors don’t known this, but Regina is home to one of the biggest teams in the Canadian Football League; the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The team itself is not the best, but its fans are famous for their loyalty.

Paint your face in green and white and head to Mosaic Stadium to watch a game like the locals do. If you really want to get into the spirit, carve a watermelon and wear it as a helmet.

The regular season is from June until November. Tickets can easily be purchased online before your visit, or you can also try to get them on the day of, although this may be costly.

15. Lose yourself in religion

Presbyterian And Methodist Knox-Metropolitan United Church

Not literally, although no judgement if you do chose to do this. And there are numerous places where you can go to either pray or just visit.

The Presbyterian and Methodist Knox-Metropolitan United Church is a beautiful church that was built in downtown Regina in 1907. If you are interested in the Mormon tradition, visit the Regina Saskatchewan Temple.

The Holy Rosary Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral that was built in 1913. It is a beautiful Romanesque Revival church that features 43 André Rault designed stained glass windows

Things to Do in Regina last updated: November 12th, 2020

Named after Queen Victoria in 1882, Regina, which is Latin for “Queen”, is now Saskatchewan’s capital city. Although it’s not the biggest city (that would be Saskatoon ), it’s the cultural and commercial centre for Southern Saskatchewan and is located right on the Trans-Canada Highway, making it the perfect stop on a Canada road trip.

Whether you’re passing through on a road trip or flying direct, we highly recommend spending some time in Queen City. Regina often gets overlooked on many traveller’s itineraries but is home to wonderful museums, historic districts, strong indigenous culture, a vibrant food scene, and of course, the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Fun Things To Do in Regina

We had a blast exploring the “heart of the prairies” and below are the top things to do on your next visit to Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Table of Contents

Wascana Lake and Wascana Centre

We couldn’t write a ‘Best things to do in Regina’ article without mentioning the Wascana Centre at the top. This is basically the heart of Regina with so much beautiful scenery and top Regina attractions. In fact, before the city was called Regina, its name was Wascana, which means “Buffalo Bones” in Cree.

The city was basically a treeless flat plain with few topographic features other than a small spring run-off called Wascana Creek. Early planners dammed the creek to create a decorative lake to the south of the central business district while also providing a stable water source for the city. That lake has now become Wascana Lake. But that’s just some light history of the area. Today, Wascana Centre is home to some of the best Regina activities, scenery, and is also home to the provincial government.

First off, there’s Wascana Lake, the focal point of Wascana Centre. This beautiful area is a wonderful place to go for a walk, jog, or bike ride, featuring water fountains, bridges, trails, and tree cover.

However, it’s also home to some of the best things to do and see in Regina, including the:

Provincial Legislative Building

  • University of Regina
  • First Nations University of Canada

Royal Saskatchewan Museum

  • Regina Conservatory

Saskatchewan Science Centre

Mackenzie art gallery.

  • Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts

You can practically spend a couple of days just exploring all the sights around Wascana Centre, and can even take an audio-guided walking tour of the lake and its surrounds. We’ll talk more about these attractions below.

There are a lot of activities in Regina, but if you’re looking for activities on the lake, they have that too! You can rent canoes, kayaks, or paddleboards from May to September by contacting Wascana Canoe Kayak Rentals at 306-757-2628. Or you can even go on a ferry boat tour. For more info, visit the Wascana Centre website .

Things to do in regina

This beautiful building was built between 1908 and 1912 and is easily one of the most striking buildings in the city. Both the legislative building and its grounds are designated a National Historic Site of Canada back as well as a Provincial Heritage Property.

Both the grounds and the building are worth visiting, and they also give free daily tours inside the building, which is another activity we highly recommend. They last just 30-minutes and will give you insight into the government of Saskatchewan as well as a sneak peek of the incredible interior.

Tours of the Legislative Building are available seven days a week with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day, and Good Friday.

  • Summer Hours (Victoria Day to Labour Day, May to September): Every 30 minutes from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m with the last tour starting at 4:30 p.m.
  • Winter Hours (September to May): Every hour from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Last tour starts at 4:00 p.m.

What to do in Regina Saskatchewan Canada

Just walking distance from the Saskatchewan Legislative Building is the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, a natural history museum that was originally established way back in 1906. The museum was formed to secure and preserve natural history specimens and objects of historical and ethnological interest and received royal patronage from Queen Elizabeth II in 1993.

It’s not a large museum but you’ll need a couple of hours to fully explore and appreciate the various galleries and exhibits, which focus heavily on Saskatchewan, including its flora, fauna, prehistoric history, and the First Nations that have been in Saskatchewan for thousands of years.

As wildlife lovers, it was really cool to learn about the animals that live in the province and to also see exactly what they look like in galleries that make it seem as if you’re outside in the wilderness. The First Nations gallery is also impressive, with plenty of artifacts and stories to bring it all to life. Plus, the museum is also home to Scotty, the largest tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton ever found!

Regina Tourism Science Centre

If you love science and interactive museums, the Saskatchewan Science Centre is one you don’t want to miss. While it’s definitely geared towards kids, it’s fun for all ages. From learning about Saskatchewan’s agriculture sector to testing out your hockey skills, there are all sorts of ways to learn and have fun.

We especially loved the Gyro Gym, which allows you to use your core and spin around, which is something they used to do for astronaut training. In addition, the Science Centre is home to the only IMAX theatre in the province and one of Regina’s top restaurants.

Learn more at www.sasksciencecentre.com.

Another attraction within Wascana Centre is the Mackenzie Art Gallery, which has eight galleries and 100,000 square feet of space. It also has workshops, preparation rooms, a 185-seat theatre, a public resource centre, gift shop, and more. Inside, you’ll find more than 3,800 artworks including Canadian historical and contemporary works with a special interest in Western Canadian art. Plus, the gallery has been a leader when it comes to presenting Aboriginal art and artists. If you’re into art, this is a place you don’t want to miss!

Fun things to do in Regina

RCMP Heritage Centre

For those into Canada’s famous police service, there’s literally no better place you can go than Regina. Why? Because Regina is where all RCMP officers get trained! You can even visit the training grounds and watch their incredible sunset ceremony during the summer months.

In addition, right across the street is the RCMP Heritage Centre. The museum showcases a number of exhibits featuring various collections of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. They’ve done a wonderful job incorporating artifacts, information, and interactive exhibits that will please anyone from kids to adults. Some of our favourite exhibits include a police car simulator and the “solve a crime” room.

Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum

Located right next to the Hotel Saskatchewan is the Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. This small museum is a great place for sports lovers who want to learn about the sports and athletes of Saskatchewan. It also has some interactive exhibits and is located in a heritage building.

Regina Farmer’s Market

Everyone loves a good farmer’s market, so if you happen to be in Regina on a Wednesday or Saturday, don’t miss the Regina Farmer’s Market in City Square Plaza. You’ll find everything from coffee to vegetables, as well as crafts too. They’ve even expanded to an indoor location at certain times and have started doing evening farmer’s markets on Thursdays. Top Regina Events

Saskatchewan Roughriders

If you like Canadian Football (similar to American Football), then you don’t want to miss a Saskatchewan Roughriders home game. Saskatchewan is known for being the most passionate fans in the league and now that we’ve been to a game, we don’t doubt it. It’s fun, energetic, and a thrill to be among the 30,000+ fans, especially on a nice summer night.

This is easily one of the best things to do in Saskatchewan if you’re a sports fan. So, grab some green, black, and white face paint, grab a beer, and cheer on the Saskatchewan Roughriders ay Mosaic Stadium.

Learn more at www.riderville.com .

You can also take a self-guided walking tour of historic Downtown Regina . This way, you’ll learn all about the buildings, artworks and statues while you explore. There are so many interesting things to see in Regina – an easy tour just helps you find them!

best restaurants in Regina

Best Restaurants in Regina

Like any Canadian city, you’ll find plenty of great places to fill your belly. From high-end restaurants to foreign classics, Regina has it all. There’s no way we can list them all here, but we’ll get you started with some of our favourites.

Avenue Restaurant & Bar (Location: 100-2201 11th Avenue): Ever heard of Top Chef Canada? Well, the first winner ever of that show, Dale MacKay , is the guy behind this incredible restaurant. Guests can expect old-school dishes, such as Beef Wellington, souffles and perogies, made with high-level techniques. Plus, if you like cocktails, they have many unique ones for you to try.

Skye Cafe & Bistro (Location: Saskatchewan Science Centre): In our opinion, this is the top place to go for breakfast or lunch. The owner is incredibly friendly, a world traveller, and hails from Southern India, bringing with him flavours from many regions of the world. We’re talking dishes like Braised Pork Belly, Shrimp Tacos, Chilaquiles with steak and chimichurri, wild mushroom and pine nut ravioli, and much more. It’s also very reasonably priced, with all dished below the $20 mark.

Siem Authentic Thai Restaurant (Location: 1946 Hamilton St.): We love Thai food and always make an effort to eat at a Thai restaurant in every city we visit. This is one of Regina’s most popular. We had our favourite dish, Pad Thai, but also tried some new things, such as Leaf Wrapped Dried Shrimp with Plum Sugar Sauce. So good! The menu is huge, so if you’re a fan of Thai, this place will not disappoint!

We didn’t get a chance to try Chinese food in Regina , but we know many people love it. The highest-rated Chinese restaurant in Regina is Peking House, which offers meat dishes, as well as vegetarian and vegan dishes too.

Coffee Shops in Regina

Coffee Shops in Regina

If you’re making your way through the best of Regina Tourism, you’re probably going to need a little “pick me up” now and then. Regina has no shortage of places to get your caffeine fix so skip the Tim Horton’s and go to some of the coffee joints we recommend below:

Cafe Royale: Quite new to the “bean scene” but located inside the famous Hotel Saskatchewan, this place reminded us of the cafe’s in Amsterdam. Grab a window seat on a rainy day and munch away on a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel while sipping back on Phil & Sebastian coffee.

33 1/3 Coffee Roasters: From what we can see, this is the highest-rated coffee house in the city. Fresh, seasonal, and ethically sourced specialty coffee. Plus, they share the space with a local brewery and a vintage shop. So, have a coffee, drink a beer, and go shopping at the same time.

The Naked Bean and Espresso Bar Cafe: If you’re looking to sip your cup of java to the backdrop of an eclectic mix of décor and art, this is the place.

Brewed Awakening Coffee Lounge: With six locations spread out around Regina, it’s hard to miss this place. They’re known for their organic coffee, but also offer food such as breakfast wraps.

Café Français: Centrally located, its elegant décor and beautifully painted mural of the Legislative Building makes you instantly sophisticated. All you need now is that little espresso shot and a macaron.

Regina breweries

Breweries in Regina

For those of age, another great thing to do in cities is visiting the local breweries. Canada is booming with breweries and Regina is no different. There are many to check out and indulge your beer tastebuds in and some of our favourites are:

Rebellion Brewing: Without a doubt, this is the most famous brewery in the city and one of the first. They have a wide variety of beers on tap and even make a beer from lentils. Why lentils? Because Saskatchewan is the world’s largest producer of lentils! Whether you’re into dark beer, light beer, hoppy beer, or something else, they likely have something to quench your thirst. Also, free popcorn!

Pile-O-Bones: This is the newest brewery in town and they’re walking distance from Mosaic Stadium, which is home to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. They serve their own brews but also brews from all over Saskatchewan, making this a great place to try a variety of locals beers. Plus, they have a Mexican restaurant inside the brewery, which means good food and good beer all under one roof! Win!

The Hotel Saskatchewan (Location: 2125 Victoria Ave) : This Marriott Autograph Collection hotel is the most beautiful hotel in the city and also has the best location, right in front of Victoria Park. This stunning heritage hotel is one of Canada’s famous railway hotels, built back in 1927. Although it has preserved its elegant grandeur through the years, it also blends timeless comforts with a modern flair, offering well-appointed rooms and suites, a fitness centre, cafe, restaurant, and spa.

Best Western Plus Eastgate Inn & Suites (Location: 3840 Eastgate Dr): We love Best Western hotels. Whether it’s their flagship hotels or one of their premium brands, we find they offer great value for big rooms and modern amenities. There are two Best Western branded hotels in Regina, which also offer a pool and/or a fitness centre, as well as free parking, breakfast, and WiFi.

Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Regina (Location: 3915 Albert Str): Another favourite is the lovely Fairfield Inn. With a restaurant, pool, fitness centre, bar and lounge, it’s got a lot to offer. The rooms are always clean and beautiful, with a hot tub, coffee machine, and a desk. It’s perfect for anyone visiting Regina on a working holiday, as well as families looking for some fun.

From Calgary to Regina is about a 7-hour drive. It’s basically in the middle of both Calgary and Winnipeg, as it’s only 6-hours from Winnipeg as well. 12 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Saskatchewan

Written by Chloë Ernst and Michael Law Updated Sep 13, 2021

Saskatchewan sometimes gets a bad rap for being flat and boring, but that's not a fair assessment. Scratch the surface a bit, and you'll find a province with over 100,000 lakes, boreal forests, fast flowing rivers, and endless recreational opportunities. One little known fact is that Saskatchewan is Canada's sunniest province ; perhaps that's why it has such a friendly population.

Legislature Building, Regina

Not quite dead center of Canada, but close, Saskatchewan shares very straight borders with Manitoba in the east, Alberta in the west, and the two U.S. states of Montana and North Dakota to the south. Visitors driving across the province will see seemingly endless fields, but the northern portion is also a treat for anyone with a love of canoeing, angling, and swimming, which can all be enjoyed on the numerous lakes.

To the Cree First Nations, hunting buffalo and living on the Great Plains centuries ago, the biggest of the river waterways was "the river that flows swiftly" or "Saskatchewan." It was from this river that the province eventually took its name.

To learn more about the province's many popular points of interest and fun things to do, be sure to check out our list of the top attractions in Saskatchewan.

1. Prince Albert National Park

2. saskatoon, 3. fort walsh national historic site, 5. rcmp heritage centre, 6. batoche national historic site, 7. trans-canada highway through saskatchewan, 8. cypress hills & grasslands national park, 9. fort carlton provincial park, 10. moose jaw, 11. qu'appelle valley, 12. the battlefords, map of tourist attractions in saskatchewan.

Prince Albert National Park

Prince Albert National Park is a gently undulating landscape of spruce bogs, large lakes, and aspen-dotted uplands. It's a hot spot for wildlife watching. The park's northern forests have Canada's second largest colony of white pelicans at Lavallée Lake , a roaming herd of Sturgeon River plains bison , plus moose, wolves, black bears, fox, lynx, caribou, and eagles. In the southern parklands, you'll find elk, deer, badgers, coyotes, and squirrels.

The park also has one of the best beaches in Saskatchewan: Waskesiu Main Beach . This 600-meter stretch of golden sand is located on the eastern end of Waskesiu Lake and is backed by green lawns and trees. Just across the street from the beach are restaurants and local shops that make grabbing an ice cream on a hot, sunny day an easy task.

If this beach isn't to your liking, nine others are sprinkled around the lake, many of which are quiet and deserted. It can get windy here, so take a look at the wind direction, and select your beach appropriately.

First Nations people have lived here for thousands of years, and there is archaeological evidence that in severe winters, tribes from the prairies moved north to these sheltered woodlands, intermingling with the people who lived here.

Grey Owl , a colorful and controversial naturalist of the 1930s, lived in this park for seven years in a small log cabin called "Beaver Lodge" on Ajawaan Lake. The author's popular books tell of his love for the wilderness, threatened by the advance of civilization. His cabin can be reached by boat or canoe across Kingsmere Lake, or by a 20-kilometer trail from the south end of the lake.

Ukrainian Church

Sunny Saskatoon is a pleasant city in the South Saskatchewan River. Many tourist attractions explore the local heritage, from the first Prairies people at the Wanuskewin Heritage Park to European settlers and culture at the Ukrainian Museum of Canada. The largest of the province's four Western Development Museums is located in the city and features a vibrant reconstructed main street known as "Boomtown 1910."

Traveling with kids? Then be sure to include the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo on your Saskatoon itinerary, popular not just for its creature collection but also its beautiful grounds. Interested in art? Pay a visit to the new Remai Modern Museum, already famous for its collection of works by Picasso.

Fort Walsh National Historic Site

Fort Walsh National Historic Site was established in 1875 under the direction of James Walsh. It was intended to stop the illegal whisky trade and became one of the most important posts in the West. During its life, the fort negotiated with the whisky traders, the native peoples, and the thousands of Sioux warriors who sought refuge in Canada after clashes with the U.S. cavalry.

Following the building of the railway and the return of the Sioux people to the USA, the fort was dismantled and abandoned. In 1942, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police acquired the land and built a ranch on which to breed horses. When the RCMP transferred to Ontario, the estate became a national historic site with a comprehensive reconstruction program. In addition to enjoying costumed re-enactments, fun things to do at Fort Walsh include hiking and biking along its extensive trail network.

Address: Fort Walsh, Maple Creek, Saskatchewan

Legislature Building in Region

A cosmopolitan commercial and cultural center, Regina is the setting for many government and provincial institutions, some of which, like the Saskatchewan Legislative Building , can be visited. It enjoys economic prosperity, and boasts a number of arts and heritage attractions, including the illuminating Royal Saskatchewan Museum and Mackenzie Art Gallery near the parklands of Wascana Centre around Wascana Lake.

Parades and other military-tattoo-like events are a popular feature at the city's RCMP Heritage Centre , while exploring science is the order of the day at the Saskatchewan Science Centre.

RCMP Heritage Centre

The RCMP Heritage Centre is the largest of its kind in Canada, with displays of equipment, weapons, photographs, and more. Both the Sergeant Major's Parade (held in the Parade Square, alternately in the Drill Hall in winter or bad weather) and the Sunset Retreat (summer) attract large crowds. The latter is a colorful flag ceremony involving a parade of recruits and a marching band, harking back to the tattoos of 18th- and 19th-century British military tradition.

Other fun things to do here include trying on related RCMP regalia, and joining an informative guided tour of the site.

Address: 5907 Dewdney Avenue, Regina, Saskatchewan

Regina Map - Tourist Attractions

Batoche was the headquarters of the famous Métis, Louis Riel, during the 1885 Northwest Rebellion. It is also where the rebellion finally came to an end, following a decisive battle. Displays illustrate the way of life of the Métis, events leading up to the rebellion, and the battle of May 1885.

The presbytery, still showing shell and bullet-holes from the battle, and the Church of St. Antoine de Padoue (1883-84) are now excellent museums. The graves of Dumont and Letendre and a mass grave of fallen Métis can be found in the churchyard. There's a good shuttle bus service to get you around this sprawling site, and other fun things to do include renting a canoe and interacting with costumed guides.

Abandoned farmhouse along the Trans-Canada Highway

By following the Trans-Canada Highway as it runs across the prairies and fields of southern Saskatchewan, visitors can see a substantial part of the province. In the summer, the fields become a riot of color, with canola blooming a brilliant yellow and flax blossoming in a vibrant purple. Near Chaplin, the colorful fields vanish and are replaced with shallow lakes and blindingly white piles of salt.

When planning your route, it is best to start from the province's southeast border with Manitoba, and drive east-to-west along the Highway, which passes through the capital, Regina , Moose Jaw, and the town of Swift Current .

Detours can then be made either north or south to many other interesting places to visit that are easily accessible from the highway, places like Moose Mountain Provincial Park , Qu'Appelle Valley , and Cypress Hills Provincial Park . Plenty of opportunities for swimming, fishing, and hunting will be found along the way.

Note that Saskatchewan is sadly lacking in highway rest stops. Plan your bathroom breaks to coincide with the larger centers mentioned above.

Moose in Cypress Hills

The highest point in Saskatchewan is in Cypress Hills, a vast tract of land in the province's southwest. The region encompasses premier outdoor attractions, including an inter-provincial park that straddles the Alberta-Saskatchewan border and Grasslands National Park, near the U.S. border.

The park is vast and offers a great opportunity to escape to nature. Take a hike and wander through the hills on your own, or pitch a tent in the campground. At night, build a crackling fire and gaze up at an unbelievably dark sky filled with a billion stars.

Though prehistoric sites in the Drumheller area of Alberta are better known, Saskatchewan's Eastend is home to the T.rex Discovery Centre and its full-size skeleton replicas are well worth a visit.

Fort Carlton Provincial Park

Fort Carlton was originally established as an outpost of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1795 to provide river patrols and provisions for fur traders, and remained in use until 1885. Rebuilt on the foundations of the third and final site on which the fort stood, the present rendition, while a replica of the original (it was built in 1967), offers a fascinating look at life during this period.

Take a canoe tour in summer, or wander the grounds to see the reconstructed fort, a Cree village, displays of hides, and various supplies.

Address: 212 Hwy, Duck Lake, Saskatchewan

Moose Jaw

The "friendly city" of Moose Jaw sits at the meeting of the Moose Jaw River and Thunder Creek. The city's top attraction is The Tunnels of Moose Jaw , which remain from the days of the first Chinese immigrants. Today, costumed guides recreate characters from Moose Jaw history here. And then, of course, there's Mac the Moose , the giant moose sculpture that graces the grounds of the city's welcome center.

Another branch of Saskatchewan's Western Development Museums is located in Moose Jaw, focusing on the history of Prairie transportation. Other notable museums can be enjoyed in Saskatoon, North Battleford, and Yorkton.

Aerial view of Buffalo Pound Provincial Park

Extending along the Qu'Appelle River is a beautiful, steep-sided valley, carved out of the gently undulating prairie by glacial waters. It is a rich garden-style landscape, with eight lakes strung out along the valley creating unique ecosystems.

The Qu'Appelle Valley is one of Saskatchewan's most popular summer destinations, with three amazing parks to visit. The Post Office in Battleford, Saskatchewan

The Battlefords consist of two cities, North Battleford and Battleford, that are across the Saskatchewan River from one another. During the early settlement days, Battleford was an important Mounted Police post and the first seat of Northwest Territories government. Fort Battleford National Historic Site explores the past of the Mounties with exhibits in refurbished buildings.

The city's Western Development Museum puts agricultural history into practice with a farm and village. If you've got some time, consider a pleasant walk up to the top of King Hill for nice views out over the city and surrounding area.

We recognize that both Indigenous and Métis people are the spiritual and cultural keepers of their traditional lands and still to this day, continue to practice their values, languages, beliefs and knowledge.
